WONDERS DOWN UNDER

Australian cruises.

From urban verve to outback wilderness, Australia is a year-round sunny paradise.

A large island nation, Australia delivers the best of both the city and the country, the beach and the bush. The locals here are a laidback and friendly bunch, with a dry sense of humor and their own slang language. Explore cosmopolitan Sydney, home to Bondi Beach's turquoise waters and the architecturally unique Sydney Opera House. Cruise to Australia and visit Queensland to experience the Whitsunday Islands, where you can snorkel to see the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest living organism. For an authentic Australian adventure, head to the outback: Check out Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, with its red dome known as Ayers Rock.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Arriving in Australia

The best time to visit Australia depends on where you want to go. The Great Barrier Reef, Queensland and the Northern Territory are best explored during dry season (May to September), while summer is the optimal time to visit southern states like Victoria and Tasmania.

Weather-wise, northern Australia enjoys an endless summer, but it does get cold in Victoria and Tasmania during winter. Meanwhile, Melbourne is known for displaying four seasons in one day, so always have a jacket and umbrella on hand, just in case.

HOW TO DINE DOWN UNDER

"Fair dinkum" — Aussie slang for "authentic" or "genuine" — Australian cuisine has been influenced by England, New Zealand and even Italy. However, there's nothing more Australian than throwing some steak and snags (sausages) on a barbie (barbecue) — no shrimps allowed.

Australian Classic Steak and Frites

POPULAR PUB GRUB

There are two dishes to order at an Aussie pub: a chicken parmigiana (called a parmi Down Under) or a burger, which will usually come topped with Australian specialties like beetroot or pineapple. Of course, you can always go for a classic steaks: Porterhouses are popular in Victoria, while rump steaks are particularly beloved in New South Wales.

Australian Biscuits

THE REAL BISCUIT

Australia has some delicious sweet treats, but it's perhaps best-known for perfecting the biscuit. Try Anzac biscuits with oats and golden syrup, lamingtons — a sponge square covered in chocolate and coconut — and Tim Tams, the local favorite brand of chocolate-covered biscuits.

Australian Meat Pies

IT'S PIE TIME

Meat pies — with a flaky pastry crust baked around a savory filling of ground meat (typically beef or lamb) and spices — are a traditional Australian lunch or snack found in bakeries across the country. Another favorite is the Chiko Roll, similar to a large spring roll but filled with the signature Aussie ingredients of mutton, celery, barley, rice, carrots and spices.

Related Ports

The Australian coast is dotted with beautiful ports, like Esperance, to explore. In Queensland, Cairns and Airlie Beach are both gateways to the Great Barrier Reef. Meanwhile, Darwin is a gateway to the Northern Territory's rugged natural sights, including Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, and Uluru.

Experience down under by boat and go on a voyage of discovery on the fifth continent . Visit mega metropolises like Sydney , Melbourne and Perth and make a detour to the most beautiful beaches in Australia . This includes, among others, the Bondi Beach, which is especially loved by surfers. Look forward to nimble kangaroos and the incredibly cuddly koalas. Also, snakes, spiders and sharks are well known Australian wildlife, but you should not be intimidated by it. Australia can be wonderfully combined with a New Zealand cruise .

Attractions in Australia

During a Sydney cruise you experience the metropolitan and vibrant life in Australia . There are many places in the country that seem deserted, almost inhospitable. But in this city it's very different. In the harbour is the world famous Sydney Opera House , which is not only worth a visit for its unique design. Here there are international concerts of the highest quality held regularly. In Darling Harbour the Maritime Museum is housed and the impressive history of the Australian Maritime is shown. An attractive photo opportunity is the Harbour Bridge and if you want to spend a day at a fine sandy beach, visit Bondi Beach.

In Brisbane you are in the capital of the state of Queensland during your Australia cruise. Stroll through the Queen Street Mall in the Central Business District and pick out something beautiful as a travel gift. For long nights, Fortitude Valley is the place to go, with so many bars and pubs in the streets.

The Great Barrier Reef is certainly one of the world's most famous highlights on the coast of Australia. The huge coral reefs are worth seeing with a trained diving instructor. If you do not want to dive, you could also try out snorkeling. You will certainly be struck by the diversity of the underwater animal world.

At the gate to the reef, your ship will dock in Cairns . Here, in the tropical North of Australia, temperatures are different than in Sydney. The landscape is characterized by dense jungles. But as you embark on a boat trip to Fitroy Island, you’ll feel as if you've just reached the South Seas. White sandy beaches and ideal bathing conditions are a true recreational paradise for all.

Many cruises from Australia take you to the climes of the South Seas, Hawaii or other South Sea islands. The starting point for your cruise is then in Sydney. In addition, the smallest continent of the world is also a destination for a world cruise.

Typical Australia

Only Australia has the unique red sand deserts that you can find anywhere in the country. You may encounter free living kangaroos on your travels and of course koala bears . The lazy members of their guild hang up for up to 20 hours a day in eucalyptus trees and sleep. They spend the rest of their day eating. It is very exciting to discover the animals in the wild. Another fascinating feature to appreciate are the works of art and cave drawings of the A borigines , the indigenous people of the continent, which you can still encounter today in some places.

Cruise lines for Australia cruises

Embark on board  Princess Cruises and experience the international atmosphere on the ships of the popular cruise line. With R oyal Caribbean you book one of the largest cruise lines in the world and at the same time ships that seem equally unreal in their dimensions. American joie de vivre coupled with an innovative entertainment program are available on the floating luxury steamers. Enjoy the varied evening program, from a cozy theatre evening to a techno evening in the disco.

Best travel time for an Australia cruise

The best travel time for your Australia cruise is the European winter , because when Europe is Summer, Australia is in Winter and travelling along the coast would only give limited pleasure. Cool temperatures, humid weather conditions and strong winds in the Indian and Pacific Oceans are not the ideal travel companions. But you can look forward to the best travel conditions for your Australian cruise between March and November. The Australian Spring will give you a sunny day, and in the Summer, balmy evenings on deck are a real treat for those who want to marvel at the shores of Australia as they pass by.

Getting there

To start a cruise in Australia, a flight from Europe is essential. The long flight times to Australia are worth the fantastic holiday that awaits! There are very few direct flights, but with stopovers in Hong Kong or Dubai , you can choose from several flight options to Sydney. Sydney is also the most important port for cruises. Here many trips begin and end along the Australian coast, but also towards the South Seas. From Sydney Airport, the easiest way to get to Sydney Harbour is by taxi. Many cruise lines also offer shuttle services. Sometimes these are even included in your travel price.

2025 Australia and New Zealand Cruises

Norwegian offers multiple choices for Australia and New Zealand cruises in 2025. These include options for 12-day, 14-day, 15-day, and 16-day voyages, making it easy to book a shorter trip or multi-week vacation.

When you cruise to New Zealand and Australia with Norwegian, you'll get to sail away on Norwegian Sun, an incredibly luxurious ship with countless options for dining and entertainment. When you're not exploring everything that the ports of Australia and New Zealand have to offer, you can kick back at the Mandara Spa, feel the thrill of the Sun Casino, or enjoy a delicious meal at one of Norwegian Sun's multiple dining options.

Some of Norwegian's Australian cruises begin in Auckland, New Zealand , and offer several excursions, including opportunities to get up close and personal with the city's stunning wildlife. At this port, you can explore peaceful beaches, hike through winding forests, and find the 48 famous volcanic cones that surround the area. If you brave the climb to the top of one of the cones, you'll enjoy spectacular views of Auckland and its harbor. There's plenty to see in the city as well, including open-air markets where you can meet Maori people and support local artisans.

Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is another popular destination when cruising in Australia, beckoning visitors with its colorful architecture and adorable wildlife. Fairy penguins, koalas, and wallabies await you at the local wildlife park, and you might even get lucky enough to cuddle a koala up close. In the thick of the city, you can traverse historic streets built on a gold rush, including churches, skyscrapers, and museums. You'll even get the chance to visit the oldest Chinatown in the Southern Hemisphere, where you can rest in tranquil parks and enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine.

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.
