Exhibitors’ and buyers’ Feedback

The 9 th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo organised a special "Cities of Gastronomy" cooking show. These renowned chefs showcased culinary artistry and promoted culinary culture, creativity and exchange. Macao has become a fulcrum of sharing Sichuan culture with the world and demonstrating the charm of the panda's hometown (Sichuan).

We sincerely thank the organisers of the 9 th Macau International Tourism Expo for their assistance in increasing ZIPCITY Macau’s brand awareness and marketing exposure. It has helped us gain positive attention from the tourism markets of Macau and Mainland China.

9 th MITE highlights

Expand “macao street”, boost the local tourism economy.

1. The number of exhibitors in “Macao Street” increases by more than 10% over the previous year. Exhibitors promote and sell a variety of preferential tourism products including “Stay, Dine and See Macao” andHighlight Tours, so that participants can explore the culture and history of Macao as well as “Tourism +” elements, which drives spending in communities, leading to further recovery of the tourism and related industries.

2. Macao’s hotel industry has set up a large-scale customized pavilion in the “Macao Street” for the first time to promote hotel products and services, so as to strengthen exchanges and cooperation among the hotel industry partners, steering the local tourism development towards diversification.

3. Exhibitors from the tourism enterprises of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has pre-matched the travel agencies from Macao to co-develop “multi-destinations itineraries” travel products,to attract buyers to purchase “Macao +” Greater Bay Area travel products.

Promote cultural tourism development, integrate “tourism + culture and creativity”

1. The “Cultural and Creative Shops” allow exhibitors to display creatively designed products.

2. The popular “Mak Mak Pavilion” makes a comeback, in which local cultural and creative enterprises are invited to promote and sell tourism products made with the theme of Macao’s tourism mascot “Mak Mak”. Leveraging on the brand-new and positive tourism image of “Mak Mak”,it deepens the cross-segment integration of tourism and cultural and creative industries and extends the added value of cultural tourism by stimulating emerging consumption.

3. The “Mak Mak, your Tour Guide in Macao” Lucky Draw in the pavilion has a lot of wonderful prizes for you!

Strengthen the “Cloud series”, integrate online and offline exhibitions

1. The 9 th MITE fosters tourism synergy by connecting international tourism industry under a hybrid format via online introduction of destination tourism resources and live interaction of audience in “Cloud Live Promotion” session, to be also live streamed on the official website.

2. For exhibitors to expand the traditional sales channels of tourism products, they may further distribute and promote their products and brands in “Cloud Live Broadcast” within fluential streamers from the Mainland China and Macao on well-known e-commerce platforms, making full play on e-marketing.

3. Optimize the Pre-scheduled Appointment System by extending the “Cloud B2B” period from 2 days to 14 days, allowing more time for exhibitors and buyers to explore cooperation opportunities.

4. “Cloud contract-signing” allows exhibitors who have confirmation or intention of agreement derived from the business matching, exerting MITE’s role as the platform to facilitate trade promotion.

Promote inheritance, innovation and exchange of gastronomy via “City of Gastronomy” culinary demonstration

1. The 9 th MITE invites famous chefs from Macao, Shunde, Chengdu and Yangzhou to demonstrate their culinary skills, share expertise and interact with the visitors who may appreciate the long history of food culture and culinary art of the “Creative City of Gastronomy” up-close.

2. In addition, the 9 th MITE continues to set up a “Gastronomy Pavilion”, where local catering outlets offer a variety of Macao specialties to visitors, show casing Macao’s recognition as the Creative City of Gastronomy.

Promote “Distinctive Shops”, enhance brand images

1. Since the launch of the “Distinctive Shops Program” in Macao, more than 100 merchants have been recognized as “Distinctive Shops”. The program continuously promotes SMEs to improve their overall service level and brand image, and optimize the business environment in Macao. The Economic and Technological Development Bureau sets up a “Distinctive Shops” Pavilion, consisting of about 20 exhibitors recognized as “Distinctive Shops”, including eateries, pastries and bakeries, as well as souvenirs industry, retail industry, handicrafts, etc. Visitors can learn about the quality services and products, and the stories of their inherited skills.

To be unveiled this Friday, the Expo will offer free admission for the public and present seven major highlights which fuel integration across the sectors of “tourism +” on its 10 th anniversary. Under the theme “Cheers for 10 th MITE”, members of the tourism and related sectors can connect, forge partnerships, and navigate business opportunities together.

Seven major highlights with new zones and pavilions to deepen “tourism +” integration

The Expo will feature seven major highlights and incorporate new elements for more profound integration across “tourism +”. The Cloud series will be enriched. Strict adherence to COVID preventive measures

Following the guidance of Health Bureau, the Expo will again adopt a series of pandemic preventive measures such as venue disinfection and staggered admission hours. Like before, an online appointment system is put into service to ensure “admission quota, advance appointment, staggered periods”. Individuals are required to present their valid Macao Health Code in green, scan the venue code, have their temperature checked upon admission, wear a mask and maintain social distance.

  • Int'l travel expo unveiled in Macao for tourism business opportunities

MACAO, April 26 (Xinhua) -- The 12th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo (MITE) kicked off Friday at the Cotai Expo in Macao on the largest scale since its first edition.

The tourism office of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government noted that this year's MITE expanded from two exhibition halls in the previous session to three, totaling 30,000 square meters, with 1,353 booths set up. It has attracted 668 exhibitors and units from 54 countries and regions.

Lei Wai Nong, secretary for economy and finance of the Macao SAR government, remarked in his speech that this edition of the expo expanded its exhibition area to accommodate seven major highlights, which will attract more exhibitors and buyers from both domestic and international markets to exchange and explore business opportunities.

China's Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism Zhang Zheng noted in his speech that since its inauguration, MITE has steadily developed into a tourism platform that connects Macao, the mainland, and international markets.

Over 40 product and destination presentations, forums, and other activities will be held during the expo, and the daily opening hours have also been extended by one hour compared to last year.

Organized by the tourism office of the Macao SAR government and coordinated by the Macao Travel Agency Association, the expo will last till Sunday. Enditem

Macau woos Muslim travellers

macao international travel (industry) expo

Macau is deepening its focus on the Muslim traveller as part of its “1+4” development strategy to diversify and integrate tourism and other related industries, including culture and creativity, sports, MICE, gastronomy and health and wellness.

The goal is to be a centre for integrated tourism and leisure, while facilitating the development of four nascent industries – big health, modern financial services, high and new technology, as well as conventions and exhibitions.

Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) director, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, said government and local tourism stakeholders attach great value to the potential of Muslim tourism (domestic and international), and steps have been taken to prepare and cater for an expected increase of Islamic visitors.

According to MGTO data, Indonesia and Malaysia already rank among Macau’s top international visitor source markets and ranked third and fourth respectively as of April.

Fernandes noted: “The perspective is for arrivals to continue to increase as direct flights and targeted promotional activities expand. Last November, direct flights between Macau and Jakarta were launched, while the frequency of flights to Kuala Lumpur will increase in July.

“At the same time, MGTO is conducting promotions targeting consumers and travel trade in these two markets, with the latest large-scale (promotion) conducted in May in Jakarta, and another one scheduled for July in Kuala Lumpur.”

The director remarked that Muslim visitors are expected to continue to increase from other places as well, including from Macau’s main visitor source market of Mainland China.

She elaborated: “Measures announced recently by the Central Government expanded the number of cities under the Individual Visit Scheme to travel to Hong Kong and Macau, with the list now also including the provincial capitals of Ürümqi (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region), Lanzhou (Gansu Province), Xining (Qinghai Province), as well as Yinchuan (Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region).”

MGTO, she added, is also eyeing the Middle East and returned this year to the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

According to a 2023 travel behaviour survey in the Middle East, intent to visit Macau is high, Fernandes shared, and more than half of the respondents (which included the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait) are willing to visit Macau (ranging from 53 per cent to 77 per cent).”

To prepare the industry, MGTO organised an Islamic Culture in Tourism workshop in March and December last year, and in February 2024 joined hands with the industry to organise the Macao Welcomes You Training Programmes for International Guests to enhance knowledge and skills.

Training content included Islamic etiquette and cultural customs, understanding what halal-certified food is and the certification process and system.

MGTO, which was a business partner of the Halal Pavilion 2024 at the Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability Expo in Hong Kong, held in January, also organised a travel trade delegation to the event to provide a platform for the industry to increase its expertise and supplier contacts.

Macao’s cultural development comes into focus at the Asian IR Summit

UPDATED: 05 Jun 2024, 2:22 pm

Leong Wai Man , the director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, delivered the keynote address on the second day of the Asian IR Summit 2024 this morning, on the topic of Macao’s evolution into a “city of performing arts” as well as the territory’s economic diversification.

She highlighted Macao’s need to take advantage of cultural events by noting that “the data shows that in 2023, there was a significant increase in the amount of mainland [Chinese] visitors attending concerts and taking part in art-related events” compared to 2019.

Leong said that her department planned to use various art-related events to further expand and develop Macao’s cultural heritage and also mentioned the government’s cooperation with the six concessionaires in the area of art, culture and gastronomy.

She pointed out that large-scale concerts staged by Macao’s integrated resorts attracted a million audience members and saw a box office revenue of 1.1. billion patacas (US$136. 9 million) in 2023 alone.

[ See more : Macao will mark its Culture City status with an array of major events ]

The bureau has been experimenting with new events, including the inaugural Macao International Comedy Festival and the Macao International Short Film Festival , which were both held earlier this year. “In order to further strengthen our cultural events, we have [also] organised activities around Macao…including Fado concerts , which took place over the course of several consecutive months,” Leong said.

She added that the government had developed new performing arts facilities – such as the Macao Cultural Centre Black Box Theatre , which opened on 3 July last year – and launched the Enjoy Macao platform , which allows users to find the latest information regarding cultural events in the SAR.

Macao’s cultural development comes into focus at the Asian IR Summit

The Asian IR Summit is currently taking place alongside the Global Gaming Expo Asia (G2E Asia 2024) in the Cotai Expo at the Venetian, with both events scheduled to conclude tomorrow.

Debuting last year, the Asian IR Summit is centred around the non-gambling operations of the integrated resorts sector, unlike the G2E Asia summit, which focuses on the gambling industry. Over 8,000 participants are expected to attend the two events during their three-day run.

Ce proud macao relying less on gaming.

Ho Iat-seng, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, hailed the city's reduced reliance on the gaming sector on Monday as he expressed optimism about Macao's economic prospects, expecting double-digit growth and a return to pre-pandemic levels in the second half of the year.

"The gambling industry accounted for less than 40 percent of Macao's GDP last year, with other non-gambling elements making up the rest," Ho said as he noted that despite anticipating an increase in the gambling industry's proportion this year, the government's goal is to keep its share at 40 percent or below.

Diversifying the economy and maintaining a balanced approach to the gambling industry has been a goal long pursued by Macao, as it is essential to build a sustainable and resilient economy that can withstand external shocks, create more employment opportunities, reduce socioeconomic disparities and adapt to changing global trends.

In 2019, before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Macao government's total revenue reached 133.5 billion Macao patacas ($16.61 billion), with gambling taxes accounting for nearly 80 percent.

However, the pandemic had a significant impact on Macao's gambling industry, as related revenue decreased to 42.84 billion patacas in 2022, marking the lowest annual revenue achieved by the industry since 2004.

To wean Macao of its gaming dependency, Ho outlined strategic measures for economic diversification known as the "1+4" strategy and highlighted the promising strides the city made in the traditional Chinese medicine industry as a result of its ties with Lusophone, or Portuguese-speaking, countries.

As the cornerstone of the diversification effort, the "1+4" strategy refers to the "1" goal of building a world-class tourism and leisure center, while the"4" focuses on four key industries: health, finance, high-technology, and conventions and exhibitions.

A significant part of the diversification revolves around the TCM industry. Macao is home to two national key laboratories focusing on pharmacology and drug development. To support the TCM industry's growth, the city has set up a Drug Regulatory Bureau to oversee the approval and quality control of TCM products. This regulatory framework is crucial for ensuring that Macao's TCM products meet high standards, facilitating their acceptance in international markets.

One notable success of this effort has been the growing market for Macao's Chinese patent medicines in Portuguese-speaking countries, especially in Africa.

"These countries have a preference for herbal medicine, which aligns with their medical culture and legal framework," Ho said, adding that this alignment has enabled Macao to establish a foothold in these markets.

Chen Xin, director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine at the University of Macao, emphasized the importance of internationalizing TCM, saying that while acupuncture has achieved success globally, the acceptance of TCM as a medicinal practice faces challenges.

"What is lacking is scientific evidence obtained through rigorous scientific methods to demonstrate its efficacy and safety," Chen said.

"I believe our team has made significant contributions in this regard, and will undoubtedly contribute to the modernization and internationalization of TCM."
