ARTISAN GIN - HAND CRAFTED ON THE EDGE OF DARTMOOR

Dartmoor-distillery-gin-bottles-devon

Dartmoor Distillery are makers of award winning Artisan Gins, Black Dog Gin and Dartmoor Beast Gin, based on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. The gins are made with hand sourced Dartmoor Spring Water and some of the botanicals have been foraged on Dartmoor by Master Distiller John Lawton.

Everything is made and packaged by hand, even the still was designed and built by the family. This is probably one of the most lovingly crafted and special gins you will ever have the pleasure in tasting. Our Black Dog Gin was the winner of the 2017/2018 Food and Drink Devon Gold Award.

For Your Money:

There are a handful of tours available at the Plymouth Distillery, but the base offering is a bargain of a detour. You’ll be given an overview of the history of the distillery and given an introduction to the distilling process and the botanicals used. You’ll be given a tutored tasting of Plymouth Gin Original and Plymouth Sloe Gin AND you’ll be given a hearty G&T in the distillery bar at the end of the tour. Can’t say fairer than that for £7!

The Connoisseur tour (£20 and lasts around 1.30h) provides a similar overview of the history of the Distillery, the botanicals that are used and the distillation process but adds to it an in-depth blind tasting of 5 gins (not just theirs) to compare the different styles and tastes of these gins. At the end of the experience guests can choose between a complimentary miniature of Plymouth Gin to take home or enjoy a Plymouth Gin and Tonic at the Refectory Bar as well. Fair warning - Please give at least 3 week’s notice when booking that one and it won’t be something they can just accommodate on the day.

A few thoughts from Gin Foundry:

For what you get for £7, it’s a no brainer. We filmed Master Distiller Sean Harrison talk about living with heritage and the character of the building - it’s got so much history, so many stories, and as a Distillery, we regard it as must do pilgrimage, not an optional tour for Gin lovers. Here’s a flavour of what to expect:

The Black Friars Plymouth Gin Distillery

  • Plymouth, England

Black Friars Distillery, the working home of Plymouth Gin since 1793, is the oldest working gin distillery in England and is situated in the heart of the historic port city of Plymouth.

Originally adjoining a Dominican Priory, dating from the year 1431, it is suggested that in 1620 some of the Pilgrim Fathers may have dined here before their departure on the Mayflower.

In 1793, the building was acquired by the Coates family for conversion into a distillery producing – “Plymouth Gin”. It is thus England’s oldest gin distillery and remains in full production today, exporting extensively to the USA.

Its gin is “Appellation Controlee” (i.e. has to be distilled in Plymouth and nowhere else) and is specified by name as the prime mixer in some 27 different cocktails, including the American “Charlie Lindbergh”.  The building also features a lofty roof-timbered public cocktail lounge in the historic Refectory on the first floor and an adjoining popular restaurant.

Our Story

When John and Nicola first met in a cocktail bar over 20 years ago, they discovered a shared interest in travel, food, and quality spirits. With a love of the Southwest countryside the couple relocated to set up home in Dulverton in 2007. They are passionate about all things Exmoor and love being a part of the local community.

The couple set up Exmoor Distillery in December 2017 and have since turned their hands to producing a range of high-quality spirits including gins, rums, and vodka.

John’s background in engineering and his innate practicality he is never happier than getting hands-on at the distillery. Combine this with Nicola’s efficiency of running a small business and Exmoor Distillery has quickly becoming recognised both nationally and internationally as a leading true small batch artisan distillery.

Meet Our Master Distiller, John Smith

At the helm of Exmoor Distillery is John Smith, a master distiller with an unparalleled passion for crafting spirits. With a wealth of experience and a keen sense of innovation, John brings a touch of class into every step, ensuring that each spirit bears the hallmark of his expertise. His dedication to the craft is not just seen; it’s tasted in every sip. Exmoor Distillery started as a gin distillery, with our founder and master distiller John Smith in 2017. What started as a gin-focused endeavour has blossomed into a celebration of craftsmanship across a spectrum of spirits. John’s desire to explore the nuances of distillation led us to expand our repertoire to include a range of spirits, from exquisite British rum to meticulously crafted vodka. Exmoor Distillery is a local distillery meaning that we proudly support the local communities, charities, and businesses that are close to us. Whether it be in Somerset, Devon or on Exmoor.

Our Promise to You

Authenticity: As a local distillery we take pride in being a true reflection of Somerset, Devon & Exmoor crafting spirits that embody the spirit of our region. Uncompromising Quality: From the selection of ingredients to the final bottling, we uphold the highest standards of quality, ensuring an exceptional drinking experience.

Family Values: Exmoor Distillery is more than a brand; it’s a family legacy. We extend the warmth of our family to yours through every bottle we produce.

WELCOME TO DEVON DISTILLERY

At Devon Distillery we are proud to be making unique and interesting spirits of the highest possible quality. We continue to enjoy the innovation and experimentation needed to bring you our own versions of classic spirits. The passion and enthusiasm of our whole team is one of the key ingredients behind every one of our local, national and International awards.

gin distillery tour devon

Our award-winning version of grappa is made from the finest grape skins, sourced from English vineyards. This pomace is upcycled after the winemaking process as we carefully distil only the best alcohol using our custom-built Italian copper still. The product of this distillation is Dappa; aged in a tank for a minimum of 12 months. Still a young and earthy product, the clean and smooth finish of Dappa has won multiple international awards.

gin distillery tour devon

Dark Fire is our award-winning Marc. We take careful selections of our original Dappa to be aged in a Pedro Ximenez sherry barrel, finishing this incredible spirit. The earthy, fiery spirit is tempered with cherry, berries and apricot tones. A real sweetness develops alongside a smokiness that lingers on the palate.

gin distillery tour devon

Determined not to waste a drop, we have crafted this traditional-style liqueur using organic Sicilian lemons and our Dappa spirit. Devoncello, lovingly created over several months, is given all the time it needs to steep and realise its fresh, zingy and crisp flavour. A wonderful digestif, as an ingredient in desserts or as part of a cocktail, this versatile spirit is a must have for the discerning drinker.

gin distillery tour devon

Utilising a custom-distilled fine gin, this Sloed gin is a refreshing update to the standard sloe gins usually available. The fruit is left for only a short time, allowing the sweetness and fruity feel to be imparted whilst retaining a satisfying gin flavour. A wonderful light and refreshing take on a sloe gin.

gin distillery tour devon

Chocolated has been thoughtfully created using the finest cacao nibs, and just a touch of vanilla. A luxurious and decadent chocolate liqueur that is deep ruby in colour and has velvety tones with a smooth syrupy texture. Chocolated has a rich and luxuriant chocolate nose that is mouth-wateringly inviting to the senses. On the palate, the chocolate is king, with a subtle finish of vanilla.

Breweries and distilleries to visit in Devon

Looking for a fun day out in Devon? We’d recommend taking a tour of one of the fine breweries and distilleries in the area on your holidays. With plenty of options to choose from for gin fanatics, beer connoisseurs and cider lovers, you’ll get to know the processes involved in creating your favourite beverages, have a little taste test and find out what inspired them all.

These are our top recommendations…

Salcombe Gin

Salcombe Distilling Co. , Salcombe

The Gin School offers a fantastic peek into the past at Salcombe Distilling Co., allowing you to learn the art of distilling, as well as creating your own bottle with a unique taste. All the gins created by this fine distillery have been inspired by the citrus cargo that was formerly bought through the port of Salcombe by Fruiters, and you’ll get to know all about their history on your visit. For something extra special, book an experience day, where you can explore the gorgeous coastline from a luxury motor cruise, taste test a number of gins, take part in water sports, dine at the distillery AND make your own gin.

Browse our cottages nearby in Salcombe .

Plymouth Gin

Plymouth Gin , Plymouth

Having produced the much-loved original Plymouth Gin recipe since 1793, this is the oldest working distillery in England. With a selection of five fantastic gins now available, Plymouth Gin has become a household name. Take your pick from one of three tours, ranging from an insight into the history on a 40-minute introduction to The Master Distiller’s Tour where you’ll get the full experience, including a blind tasting session, a chance to distil your own gin and take a bottle of it home! Don’t miss the chance to visit The Refectory Bar and Cocktail Lounge too.

Devon Distillery

Devon Distillery , Dartington

Devon Distillery offers a local twist on Italian favourites Grappa and Limoncello to bring you Dappa and Devoncello, two delicious after-dinner treats, as well as a gin. Their exciting range makes a visit all the more exciting, especially at the Devon Gin School where you’ll get the chance to make your own spirit and learn all about the art of distilling. With some exciting projects currently in development, we can’t wait to see what amazing creation Devon Distillery come up with next!

Salcombe Brewery

Salcombe Brewery , Salcombe

Head to the South Devon countryside to see Salcombe Brewery’s unique brewhouse, situated on the site of a decommissioned water reservoir: a perfect environment for storing their ales. Tours take place on a weekly basis during peak season, and once a month in low season, giving you the chance to explore the brewhouse and learn all about the taste and skill behind each bottle. For something extra special, book a brew day where you can craft your own beer with Sam and Chris. Lunch is a traditional pint and a pasty, something the company touts as ‘a champion way to spend the day’...and we wholeheartedly agree.

Dartmoor Whisky Distillery

Dartmoor Whisky Distillery , Bovey Tracy

As the first single malt whisky distillery in the South West, a visit here is incredibly unique. Book a tour to see the distillation process, the craft of whisky production and the heritage of Dartmoor and its unique geology.

Browse our cottages nearby on Dartmoor .

Sandford Orchards

Sandford Orchards , Crediton

Creating craft ciders in the heart of Devon, Sandford Orchards celebrates the best of the West Country with its wide array of ciders. To make the most of their incredible beverages, come and tour the cider works to see how the Devon apples go through the transformation process to create a crisp, delicious cider. During your experience, you’ll not only get to see the orchard in all its glory but make the most of a cider tasting session at the end too!

Although not all of our favourite distilleries or breweries offer tours, you can still sample their goods at a number of local establishments. So, with that in mind we’d recommend keeping your eyes peeled for the following on your next holiday to Devon:

Wicked Wolf, produced in Exmoor’s first distillery this has become a firm favourite among gin connoisseurs.

Atlantic Spirit, created at one of Devon’s top attractions, The BIG Sheep, this spirit is created from locally sourced ingredients and a passion for gin.

Hattiers Premium Rum, an award-winning rum combining fine aged rums from the Caribbean and Central America with a splash of Devon soul.

While it might seem like a new trend, gin has actually been drunk in Britain since the Middle Ages and with England's oldest working distillery still producing excellent gin in  Plymouth,  Devon is the place to go to enjoy this fashionable beverage.

From traditional London Dry styles made in huge copper pots, to small handcrafted batches using unexpected botanicals, to sloe gins and unusual gin liqueurs, it’s easy to underestimate the variety of gins that are now produced in Devon – and it’s also great fun sampling them all! Devon gin and gin distilleries are enjoying a well-deserved renaissance at the moment, as the world wakes up to the endless delights and possibilities of this increasingly popular drink – and the quality of the craft gins both new and old that are produced here.

Devon distilleries

There have been distilleries in Devon producing gin since the Middle Ages – and Devon still boasts excellent award-winning gins with history and traditions going back hundreds of years. But in recent years new distilleries have emerged, producing craft gins in a variety of unique styles.

Where to try Devon gin

Of course, the most obvious answer is – at a Devon distillery!  Some of them offer tours  and tastings, and a visit to a distillery is a fantastic way to stimulate your appetite for gin! But also many of Devon’s  pubs , bars,  restaurants  and  hotels  now stock at last one home-grown gin – so next time you visit, seek one out.

Celebrating Exeter's Roman heritage

A robust yet smooth artisan gin..

Exeter’s own premium gin made in small batches and produced in a traditional copper still. This robust yet smooth gin celebrates Exeter’s Roman heritage and occupation between circa AD55 and AD380, “ISCA Dumnoniorum’ describing flowing water in reference to the River Exe. Using ancient botanicals favoured by the Romans such as tarragon, basil, cardamom, cinnamon & marigold combined with 11 other botanicals. The result is an outstanding gin experience.

serving suggestion

Gin basil mojito.

Putting a gin twist on a rum classic, the Gin Basil Mojito sees basil, lime and sugar combine to make a refreshingly herbaceous thirst-quencher. Serve in a jug to share with friends, and garnish with fresh mint for a simple yet effective final touch.

- 50ml Exeter Gin - 3 to 4 Basil leaves - 1 lime cut into 4 wedges - 1 to 2 teaspoon of soft brown sugar - 75ml of Club Soda

Serving Suggestion

The sidmouth blue.

A tantalising twist on a Gin Fizz, the Sidmouth Blue incorporates Orgeat syrup, lemon juice and Blue Curacao to create a sweet, citrusy flavour with a satisfying fizz. Its bright shade of blue celebrates Sidmouth’s stunning coastline and ensures a delightful wow-factor whenever served.

- 50ml Exeter Gin

- 50ml Blue Curacao

- 10ml Orgeat syrup

- 1 lemon or 25ml freshly squeezed juice

- 150ml Club Soda water or to taste.

The Negroni has experienced a popularity surge in recent years, and Exeter Gin’s take on the classic cocktail proves this recognition is more than justified. An earthy blend of gin, Campari, sweet vermouth and orange sees Italy and Exeter come together to create a bittersweet taste sensation.

- 50ml Campari

- 50ml sweet vermouth

- Orange wedge and peel to garnish

AWARD WINNING GIN

What people are saying.

"Bold aromas, excellent aromatic depth, stacks of fragrance and a big hit of juniper all deliver compelling complexity and I could not wait to dive in. Sipping this feels like a massive luxurious treat. Glossy and richly textured with juniper banging a deep bass drum, this glorious gin reverberates with refreshing citrus layers and a kick of zesty spice. It’s epic – a proper festival of flavours. And with tonic, I could drink it by the bucket!"

- Olly Smith, Great British Food Awards Judge

A Devon gin distillery is on the hunt for a tour guide.

Plymouth Gin Distillery, is advertising for a new tour guide to take avid gin drinkers on tours around the historic building.

According to the Plymouth Herald the distillery is looking for a suitable person to enlighten excited visitors on the distillery’s history and gin making process across two days per week.

Plymouth Gin Distillery

The job post on Facebook has already attracted nearly 200 comments, and Pippa Robinson, deputy supervisor and tour guide, said they have already received plenty of applications.

The lucky future employee will be required to work 14 hours per week, and training will be provided to learn the history of gin production.

There are no formal qualifications needed either – other than you need to be an adult and feel confident in speaking in front of a group of people.

Plymouth Gin is thought to be England’s oldest working distillery dating back to the 13th century, and the tasty tipple is sold all over the world.

If you fancy combining your passion for gin with your job, then this is the perfect role.

You can hand in your CV at the distillery on Southside Street before the closing date of October 30.

Idyllic Scene On Surfers Beach With Beautiful Beach Huts Reflecting In The Water

Why we love Devon

Hugging the south-west, Devon is a playground for adventurers, explorers and lovers of food and drink. With around 120 picturesque sandy beaches, it offers the perfect place to pitch a picnic stocked with locally sourced foods. Its crystal waters offer decent surf, while its towering cliff-side walks hark back to the fossilised Jurassic south.

From medieval towns to cute seaside villages, there’s a slice of paradise waiting for you. Whether you’re a walker, a cyclist or a wheelchair user, fancy a dip, a flop or even a trek with a lama, washed up with a fat menu of local treats and sleep under the stars, Devon has it all.

Treguddick part of the english spirit family.

Having pushed the bleeding edge of delicious spirits and liqueurs for more than a decade, English Spirit founder and Master Distiller John Walters' passion for all things glass and plate are brought together in our adventure at our Cornish distillery, Treguddick, a small hamlet where all things spirits and food combine to titillate the pallet to extraordinary heights.

Jam Award 3.jpg

WINNER OF THE BEST BRITISH JAM

Made with plum gin liqueur.

We are absolutely bowled over to win best Jam in Great Britain at this year's Great British Food Awards . Judged by no less than Raymond Blanc!

It's a lovely feather in our cap as we march on with our Treguddick adventure. What we are really about here is taking the best in food, spirits and liqueurs and spinning these delicious threads of flavour into mouth-watering experiences.

We take fresh plums, peeled and sliced ginger and cook with our plum gin liqueur to produce a jam that offers a gentle sweetness, an immense depth and breadth of flavour and the floral spiced warmth that is the complexity of fresh prep'ed ginger. For me it's such a  gorgeous alternative to marmalade. Goes well with cheese too!
