D allas has no shortage of great home tours. Any weekend is well spent exploring the glamorous bungalows of Hollywood/Santa Monica, the Queen Anne-style estates along Swiss Avenue, and the quirky, Charles Dilbeck-filled corner of Cochran Heights. But only one Dallas home tour lets you explore the best of every coveted neighborhood: the AIA Dallas Tour of Homes.

The popular event focuses on the best architecture across the city, no matter where that work resides. With tickets now available for the 2023 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes, we’re offering an exclusive peek at the six striking dwellings, chosen from countless submissions by the Tour of Homes committee, that will open their doors on Saturday, October 28, and Sunday, October 29.

East Dallas: Maestri Studio

Celebrate 4th of july.

Bering's Gift's June 2024 Fourth of July

An East Dallas Jewel by Maestri Studio

Architect Eddie Maestri and his eponymous studio are known for modernist masterpieces (often with a playful dash of Palm Springs). This East Dallas gem is a blend of SoCal/Asian styles, inspired by the clients’ travels. Bringing the outdoors in was key, and Maestri Studio did it in surprising ways. Unique additions include a sliding glass door between a living area and the central courtyard, as well as an indoor/outdoor fireplace that punches through the exterior wall.

North Dallas: AMDG Studio

A preston hollow stunner by amdg studio.

What began as a modest ranch remodel evolved into a serious makeover on Bobbitt Drive. The client dreamed of an airy, sun-soaked place to cook and entertain. Walnut millwork, Douglas fir ceilings, Lueders limestone, and more are seen throughout the high-efficiency home, which was designed to accommodate a wheelchair in the future (along with a dedicated suite for a future caregiver).

Junius Heights: VeuxDeux Designs

A renovated 1920s crafstman in junius heights.

Known for thoughtful preservation and a harmonious high-low blend, the talented team behind VeuxDeux Design , founded in 2017 by AIA architect Leslie Nepveu, completely renovated a small Craftsman home in Dallas’ historic Junius Heights neighborhood (part of the 1919 Munger Place Revision) and added a 795-square-foot second floor. The foundation was adjusted, a fireplace was replaced, and an antique gas radiator was installed to add even more character to the classic Dallas home.

Preston Hollow: Malone Maxwell Dennehy Architects

A preston hollow “classic” by malone maxwell dennehy architects.

An airy contemporary residence by the longstanding Dallas architecture firm allows every room to commune with its killer backyard. A striking blend of contemporary and traditional elements, “it is deliberately domestic and recalls familiar tropes of American houses” according to the AIA website.

University Park: Janson Luter Architects

A university park home by janson luter architects.

To build this large family home on a small corner lot in the Park Cities, the Janson Luter team had to get creative. A collaboration with Dan Shipley, FAIA of the award-winning firm shipleyArchitects, helped establish the unique flow of the open concept home. A thoughtful material palette (including St. Joe’s bricks coursed to align with all openings of the facade) was selected to complement the project’s structure.

Bent Tree: Marc McCollom Architect

A bent tree modern by marc mccollom architects.

The late ’70s home in Far North Dallas was a “ rambling conglomeration of rooms ” beyond its striking modern exterior. The Marc McCollom team did a complete renovation of the 7,500-square-foot interior, bringing clarity, scale, and stunning materials.

Dallas Architects Know What They Like When Selecting Stops For The AIA Dallas Tour of Homes

Share News:

x-twitter-icon-CD

It takes one to know one.

And in the case of the AIA’s annual Dallas Tour of Homes, co-chairs Andrew Meckfessell and Andrew Stiglmeier know the work of good architects because “the two Andrews” are architects, too. They helped select the homes being showcased in this year’s tour planned for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 28 and 29, and they’re pleased with what the public will be able to view.

aia dallas tour of homes 2023

“We take pride in our selection and reaching out to these architects,” Meckfessell said. “It’s always nice to see what they’re doing.”

The six tour homes will serve as innovative and diverse examples of what architects’ unique designs can do to create exceptional living spaces. No cookie-cutter applications here.

“We like to have a mix,” said Stiglmeier. “We work hard to get more variety of different types of homes. This year we have a house that’s more about historic preservation, and we still have the high-end homes as well. People are going to be pleasantly surprised with the variety of homes.”

AIA Dallas Tour of Homes’ 17th Year

aia dallas tour of homes 2023

Now in its 17th year, the 2023 tour will feature two homes in East Dallas, one in Highland Park, two in Preston Hollow, and one in Far North Dallas. Tickets for the self-guided tour will go on sale Aug. 10 at www.hometourdallas.com . Tickets cost $50 prior to Oct. 23 and $60 after that date.

The co-chairs both feel the Dallas tour, the only citywide tour curated by architects, serves a very important purpose.

“Part of our goal with the tour is promoting the use of architects and what we really hope happens is that through the experience people can appreciate the homes,” Stiglmeier said. “We’re showing what architects can do and the value they provide.”

Meckfessel is a fan of home tours because he thinks they’re interesting ways to see the partnerships among cities, neighborhoods, and architects.

“You drive buy these homes on a daily basis and never get to see in them,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to see exactly what’s inside them. As an architect, I enjoy seeing a completed project within a neighborhood.”

aia dallas tour of homes 2023

Experienced Volunteers

Meckfessel and Stiglmeier bring professional experience to the volunteer positions they’ve assumed for the annual home tour. Both are members of the Dallas chapter of The American Institute of Architects, the tour’s host organization.

Meckfessel, associate principal architect with DSGN Associates , specializes in urban planning, library and fire station design, sustainable design, and historic preservation. He holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture, and his portfolio includes work on several Dallas libraries, Dallas offices, and mixed-use developments in the Philippines.

Stiglmeier, who earned an architecture degree from Texas Tech University, launched his own firm,   A. Michael Architecture , in 2020. He specializes in high-end residential design, both single-family and small-scale, multifamily designs. His work is influenced by an appreciation of history and architecture he gained growing up in Europe and Asia.

Promoting Dallas Architects

In leading the Dallas tour, Meckfessell and Stiglmeier are eager to promote the work of other architects. Firms with work included in this year’s tour are AMDG Studio, Janson Luter Architects, Maestri Studio, Malone Maxwell Dennehy Architects, Marc McCollom Architect, and Veux Deux Design.

Getting to see their designs is a great experience, one the co-chairs know will benefit the public and one they hope the public will embrace.

“It’s a strong advocacy for what you get when you hire an architect,” Meckfessel said. “There’s a strong benefit to hiring an architect.”

In some ways, it’s a gift to the community.

“I’ve been more than happy to champion the tour for the AIA and the people who love it as an event,” Stiglmeier said.

2023 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes Promises to Wow With Architect-Selected Contemporary Designs

aia dallas tour of homes 2023

The 2023 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes is one you won’t want to miss if Maestri Studio’s contemporary design in East Dallas is any indication. Dubbed “Garden Jewel” by the architecture firm, it’s one of six homes on this year’s 17th annual event planned for October 28-29.

The tour, presented by eggersmann Kitchens & Home Living, will feature architect-designed homes throughout the city including two residences in East Dallas, one in Highland Park, two in Preston Hollow, and one in Far North Dallas. The selections showcase the latest in contemporary style as well as how architects help clients overcome design challenges to achieve noteworthy spaces.

The 2023 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes is co-chaired by Andrew Meckfessel, AIA, NCARB, and Andrew Stiglmeier, AIA, RID.

“We are excited as always to share stunning home designs by Dallas-based architects at this Tour of Homes, but we are especially happy to see some up-and-coming architects’ work on this year’s tour,” Meckfessel said in a press release.

Projects on this year’s tour range from a renovation and expansion of a 1920s Craftsman home in the Junius Heights Historic District to fit a family of four, to rebuilding from the ground up a much-loved Preston Hollow home, to accommodating dual goals of being able to age in place and entertain grandchildren and guests.

“This year’s submissions really stood out to the selection committee as excellent examples of residential architecture that addressed a wide variety of needs, style preferences, scale, and budget,” Stiglmeier added.
