The album sounds like Black Sabbath except with a different guitar player. Any Dio album with Vinny is almost Sabbath in my books.

A latter day legacy revisited.

The task of quantifying the legacy of any one musician’s lifetime is a daunting one, but few could ever hope to boast the degree of accomplishment that summed up the career of one Ronald James Padavona , known better as Ronnie Dio . His was a journey that spanned the primordial days of rock ‘n’ roll during the doo-wop obsessed 1950s where suits and ties were the order of the day, all the way to the glorious renaissance of heavy metal that rounded out the first decade of the current millennium. Many fellow travelers would come and go during his more than 50 years quest for greatness, including rock and metal pioneering guitarists Tony Iommi and Ritchie Blackmore , to speak nothing for the numerous instrumentalists that filtered in and out of Black Sabbath ’s and Rainbow ’s ranks during his tenure with said bands. With the dawn of the 2020s at hand and the 10 th year anniversary of this legend’s passing approaching, one might guess that all has been said and done regarding Dio ’s work, and one would be quite wrong in light of the most recent box set release bearing his insignia.

Endless conversations have raged with regard to Ronnie ’s formative years prior to the inception of the band bearing his stage name, alongside the 80s offerings of that would follow, but the subject of his latter day works has garnered far less attention from the masses. The factors surrounding this unfortunate eventuality are many, with a healthy contingent of fans obsessing over the early days with original guitarist Vivian Campbell manning the six-string and the decline of heavy metal’s popularity following the advent of grunge being the most frequently cited culprits. Nevertheless, Dio ’s ongoing pursuit of excellence refused to bend with the winds of change, and the culmination of his efforts from the mid-90s until the end of his life stand as four highly ambitious albums that are a testament to a musician and songwriter who had one foot steadfastly planted in heavy metal traditionalism, while the other moved freely with the evolution of metal and was always open to assimilating the latest innovations into his craft.

For those old enough to count themselves among the ranks of Generation X, the mid-90s will no doubt conjure up memories of a dark period in heavy metal where its relegation to the underground was accompanied by a sound defined by rage, dissonance and confusion. It is in this context that Dio ’s controversial 7 th studio offering “Angry Machines” fell, and his own sense of discontent following the disintegration of Black Sabbath ’s short-lived 1992 reunion is on full display amid a stew of seemingly contradictory influences. With the aid of longtime band mate and drummer Vinnie Appice , ex- Dokken bassist Jeff Pilson , recently recruited keyboardist Scott Warren and wild card guitarist Tracey G , it is an album that walks a fairly confused path; incorporating the asymmetrical songwriting and odd time progressive quirks of Dream Theater , the fatalism and sludgy murkiness of Crowbar , and the dissonant tonality and chaotic aesthetic of Napalm Death into a shaky traditional metal template, arguably teetering on the edge of losing the musical plot in the process.

“Angry Machines” Album Artwork

While this album is all but universally panned as Dio ’s weakest studio outing, veering too far into the cynicism and angst of the 90s for his core audience to process, it carries a certain historical significance and charm that is not without some merit. Per Ronnie ’s own testimony, nobody really knew what heavy metal was in 1996, at least insofar as the continental United States was concerned, and between an exemplary vocal performance out of the front man himself that is well within the parameters of what one would expect out of him and an impressive technical display by his partners in crime, a sense of musical catharsis exists for those willing to dabble in the extreme end of the metal spectrum. The re-mastered versions of these songs accent the muddied doom/sludge character of the songwriting, with the trudging “Institutional Man” , the groove thrashing speeder “Don’t Tell The Kids” and the epic ode to metal anguish “Stay Out Of My Mind” being the apex points. The accompanying bonus material consists of about 90% of the material found on the out of print 1998 live album “ Dio’s Inferno: The Last In Live ”, showcasing a darker and more chaotic approach to his classic live staples alongside a smattering of offerings from the then latest studio offering.

The dawn of the new millennium proved a more fertile time for Dio ’s brand, as a new generation of metal maniacs came to know the man on the silver mountain thanks to the ascendant European power metal scene. Coupled with old friendships being rekindled, 2000’s “Magica” would mark a triumphant return to form, all the while not wholly shedding the darker doom-side of Dio ’s recent past that first reared its head on his work with Sabbath on Dehumanizer . The involvement of late original bassist Jimmy Bain , latter 80s axe man Craig Goldy and short-term early 90s drummer and former AC/DC kit man Simon Wright left little doubt in anyone’s mind that Ronnie ’s traditionalist core had re-emerged, this time manifesting as an expansive conceptual fit of Sci-Fi/Fantasy storytelling that blurs the lines between his 80s heavy metal past and the concurrent symphonic metal craze, seeing a highly ambitious role for keyboardist Scott Warren to complement Goldie ’s virtuoso shredding and Dio ’s own triumphant vocal delivery, which had lost none of its power and intrigue over successive decades of touring.

“Magica” Album Artwork

To call “Magica” an iconic new classic would be an understatement, and the tweaks accomplished in this latest master showcases an album that could have been recorded this very year, while losing zero of its early 2000s metal revivalist flavor. Be it the haunting atmosphere of the various voice-over interludes featuring the alien storytellers, the crushing riff work of Dream Evil throwback anthems such as “Fever Dreams” and “Challis”, the symphonic bluster displayed on highly ambitious doom metal anthems such as “Eriel” , “Feed My Head” and “Otherworld” , or the serene brilliance of the epic power balladry of “ As Long As It’s Not About Love” , the impact factor has been fully maintained. Perhaps the lone flaw in this era of Dio ’s latter days is the criminal absence of live renditions of these timeless anthems, which has now been almost fully addressed with the inclusion of live performances of about 80% of this album. Though the venues in which these songs were performed were no doubt humble in comparison to the arenas that Dio headlined during the “Sacred Heart” tour, there is a colossal character to these performances that will undoubtedly conjure comparisons to said era.

As the early 2000s progressed, it became very clear that the nostalgia factor amongst the metal faithful had reached a boiling point, and with this came a demand for a more pronounced return to the good old days. Whether by coincidence or response to public demand, the exit of guitarist Craig Goldy saw Dio attempt a full on rehash of the Vivian Campbell era of his past, culminating in 2002’s “Killing The Dragon” and a far larger crowd draw during the corresponding tour. Although the rift between Ronnie and his original guitarist had not vanished and his return remained a total impossibility, a more than suitable guitarist with a similarly wild, flashy style was tapped in Doug Aldrich . Truth be told, Aldrich shines about as brightly as Dio himself, launching a volley a riff-happy anthems and tearing up the fret board with an even more virtuosic display than the swift shred sessions that adorned “Holy Diver” and “The Last In Line” . This is not to say that the album in question is better than the aforementioned classics, but more so that Aldrich achieves the same spirit of sound on this album to an absolute fault.

“Killing the Dragon” Album Artwork

Although only standing at 18 years of age at this point, “Killing The Dragon” is given a slightly grittier feel thanks to the remastering work of this box set’s engineering wizard Wyn Davis , who actually was responsible for all of the original albums’ post-production amid a number of prominent albums by the likes of Dokken and several others. Of particularly auspicious note is the galloping, quasi- Iron Maiden inspired title song “Killing The Dragon” , the quick-paced rocker “Better In The Dark” and the Deep Purple -influenced coaster with some fancy keyboard additives “Before The Fall” , though there are no real slouches to speak of in this impressive display of old school heavy metal versatility. The corresponding live material included as bonus material here highlights the nostalgia factor and the more energetic character of Doug Aldrich , largely featuring swifter selections from Holy Diver and The Last In Line , alongside some exemplary performances of this album’s comparatively younger yet equally biting anthems. Though only the ignorant would assert that Dio ever left the stage, this was definitely the time where most were wont to acknowledge that the original version of this iconic outfit was back in full force.

Though the musical story of one Ronnie James still had another 6 years and an auspicious second go at reunification with Black Sabbath in the works by the time 2004 rolled in, it was this year when his last LP would come to light. Curiously enough, the principle reaction invoked by “Master of the Moon” , which saw the exodus of Jimmy Bain and Doug Aldrich along with the return of Jeff Pilson and Craig Goldie , was largely one of ambivalence. Standing as one of Dio ’s more nuanced offerings, it is ironically the album most heavily impacted by Davis ’ remastering tweaks, owing to its heavily minimalist and atmospheric character. Nailing down the stylistic label that could be attributed to slow-paced, dense and somewhat static compositions that are “Master Of The Moon” , “The Man Who Would Be King” and “The Eyes” is a daunting task, as the symphonic, doom and traditional metal aspects tend to bleed together into a singular, monolithic colossus with the disquiet of the lyrical subject being the principle unifying factor.

dio angry machines tour

“Master of the Moon” Album Artwork

Then again, the generally conventional character of many of these songs fit into the general scheme of his heavy-ended yet mystical offerings from the Rainbow days up until the present, though in a rather quirky way. The obligatory opening speeder “One For The Road” could pass for a toned down sequel to “Stand Up And Shout” with a heavier aesthetic conducive to “Here’s To You” off 1993’s “Strange Highways” , whereas the groovy rocking character of “The End Of The World” , “Death By Love” and “Shivers” correspond to various points in Dio ’s latter 80s work with Goldy on the guitar. The bonus material largely corresponds to this general air of nuance, opting for obligatory classics in the live venue such as “Heaven And Hell” and “Rainbow In The Dark” alongside the less expected mid-80s classic “Rock N Roll Children” and a live rendition of the then current album’s most bizarre anthem “The Eyes” . Perhaps the biggest boon of this collection, barring the inclusion of “Electra” from the incomplete “Magica II” sessions, is the bonus studio song “Prisoner of Paradise” , which conforms to the slower grooving character of the rest of “ Master of the Moon” , but really drives the point home during the infectious chorus section and Goldy ’s idiomatic lead guitar work.

Though it is unlikely that the twilight years of Dio ’s journey to heavy metal greatness will garner the same degree of interest from the general public as his classic offerings during said genre’s early 80s ascendancy, it would be a mistake to assume that this electric elf lord lost any degree of artistic zeal following the decline and rebirth of the art form. With younger acts hailing from Europe and beyond such as Jorn , Astral Doors and Lords Of Black continuing to bear the torch, to speak nothing for the multiplicity of spinoff acts that have emerged featuring former members of Dio ’s fold, the relevance of these albums endures as yet another generation rises to acknowledge the achievements of the past. Those steadfast fans who were along for the ride over the decades and have a preference for this music in the vinyl medium will find this an essential piece of metal history, though no self-respecting fan of old school heavy metal should go without hearing these albums and getting a taste of just how powerful the original king of rock n roll was even as he approached his golden years.

For a brief spell during the mid-'80s, the heavy metal quintet Dio were one of the top U.S. concert attractions, boasting one of the most over the top stage acts of its time loaded with props and special effects (lasers, explosions, a giant dragon, etc.). The group's leader was singer Ronnie James Dio, who had previously become acquainted with the metal masses as the frontman of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow from 1975-1978 and Black Sabbath from 1979-1982. Come the early '80s, Ronnie James was ready to finally head out on his own, forming Dio and recruiting a stellar backing band, consisting of a few former bandmembers, ex-Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain and ex-Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice (Carmine Appice's brother), in addition to ex-Sweet Savage guitar shredder Vivian Campbell. Lyrically, the group would retain the same subject matter that Ronnie James specialized in with his previous outfits (dungeons and dragons, swords and sorcery, damsels in distress, etc.), but musically, Dio were more melodically based than Rainbow or Sabbath. The group scored a hit right off the bat with its 1983 debut release, Holy Diver, which spawned such popular MTV videos as "Rainbow in the Dark," as well as its title track.

For their sophomore effort, 1984's The Last in Line, the band expanded its lineup to include keyboardist Claude Schnell, as the album would become the biggest hit of Dio's career (on the strength of another MTV-approved video, for the album's anthemic title track) and the group became an arena headliner. Although Dio's next release, 1985's Sacred Heart, was commercially successful, Campbell had become disillusioned by the group's direction and split from the group a year later. Just prior to Campbell's exit, the entire Dio band helped organize Hear n' Aid, an all-star assembly of heavy metal artists that recorded a track called "Stars," which helped fight world hunger (a subsequent album was issued as well, collecting previously unreleased live tracks from a few of the day's top hard rock acts). Former Giuffria guitarist Craig Goldy took Campbell's place, resulting in such releases as 1986's live EP Intermission and 1987's Dream Evil, which retained the group's headbanging audience, but failed to expand upon it as its previous releases had.

By 1990's Lock Up the Wolves, Ronnie James Dio was the only original member of Dio left in attendance as the band's lineup continued to fluctuate throughout the '90s on such releases as 1994's Strange Highways, 1996's Angry Machines, and 1998's Inferno: Last in Live (Ronnie James took a brief break from Dio in 1992 to rejoin Black Sabbath for a lone release, Dehumanizer). In 2000, a pair of Dio releases emerged; first was Dio's first new studio album in four years, the concept album Magica (which saw past members Bain and Goldy return to the group), as well as a 16-track compilation titled The Very Beast of Dio. His medieval-themed metal returned two years later, when the Killing the Dragon album arrived in the spring of 2002. The album was a serious endeavor, but Dio also learned to make fun of his image after years of defending it, inviting comedy duo Tenacious D to star in the video for "Push" and even including the clip on the fall re-release of Killing the Dragon.

In the mid-2000s Dio the man and the band returned with the studio album Master of the Moon and the live Evil or Divine, but by 2006 the band had been sidelined upon the announcement that Ronnie James would be joining Heaven & Hell, a group reuniting the singer with his late-era Sabbath brethren Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice and named after the first Sabbath recording (released in 1980) that featured him as frontman. Heaven & Hell toured in the late 2000s and released a live (Live from Radio City Music Hall) and a studio (Devil You Know) recording, but by November of 2009 it was announced that the singer was suffering from stomach cancer, and Heaven & Hell subsequently canceled their summer 2010 touring plans. Ronnie James Dio succumbed to the disease on May 16, 2010, in Houston, TX. ~ Greg Prato

ALBUM REVIEWS: Dio – Angry Machines, Magica, Killing the Dragon and Master of the Moon

24 March 2020 Mark Diggins

dio angry machines tour

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the passing and honor the legacy of iconic vocalist Ronnie James Dio , BMG Records have reissued Dio’s long out-of-print 1996-2004 studio albums  Angry Machines (1996), Magica (2000), Killing The Dragon (2002), and Master Of The Moon (2004).

It’s interesting coming back to these four albums after so many years with fresh ears.  As fans will tell you those first four Dio albums were magical from ‘Holy Diver’ to ‘Dream Evil’ and the two that followed ‘Lock Up The Wolves’ and ‘Strange Highways’ get a few mixed reviews but this collection from 1996 – 2004 are really the overlooked era of the band what with Dio returning to Black Sabbath in 1992 with Vinny Appice for ‘Dehuminizer’ they make up the lat recordings of the band.

These final four studio albums are in truth a mixed bag. If I’m honest I always saw ‘Strange Highways’ as an inferior yet musically similar take on the ground that both ‘Lock Up The Wolves’ and ‘Dehuminizer’ to a degree trod. It’s a world away from those first four albums, chasing as it does a sound that really doesn’t suit Ronnie’s voice (or writing style?). Now whilst not quite the peak of Metal’s mid-90’s morass when the old guard still didn’t quite know what to do with themselves four years after Grunge, it’s not cohesive at all.

ANGRY MACHINES (1996)

‘Strange Highways’ before it had tried unsuccessfully to chase prevailing trends without much luck and ‘Angry Machines’ just seems to venture further down the rabbit-hole. In truth opener ‘Institutional Man’ isn’t bad and it does have a cool solo; and the upbeat ‘Don’t Tell the Kids’ is nice and like ‘Hunter of the Heart’ is saved partly by the bass-line and some inspired speedy guitars from Gus G.

Interestingly for me at least its the tracks I largely forgot that fare quite well and whilst there are a few duffers like ‘Back’ and ‘Big Sister’ (nice concept forgettable song) tracks like the brooding doom-laden ‘Stay Out of My Mind’ are quite en-vogue in 2020 again. And after possibly years without hearing them I actually find ‘Every Sunday, double Monday’ and ‘Golden Rules’ hitting the spot.

The one huge song here though is the closing track ‘This Is Your Life’ a Queen-like ballad with voice and piano that sees Ronnie on the absolute top of his game, it’s a song strangely out of place and time here and perhaps underlines what most bands should have been doing instead of chasing trends – producing timeless, simple, stunning music.

These releases of course have bonus tracks and ‘Angry Machines’ comes with the best of all – twelve live tracks from  the ‘Angry Machines’ tour in 1997. It’s a set that tellingly recalls far more of the past than the present – only opener ‘Jesus Mary and The Holy Ghost’ from ’93’s ‘Strange Highways’ makes it from recent albums along with ‘Double Monday’  and ‘Hunter of the Heart’ come from Angry Machines released the year before in 1996. The rest is a combination of classic Dio, Rainbow and Black Sabbath. I’d honesty but this one just for the live set and ‘This Is Your Life’!

MAGICA (2000)

The new millennium brought a completely new line-up: 2000’s ‘Magica’ saw a complete change of guard aside from Ronnie –  Tracy G was replaced by Craig Goldy, Jeff Pilson by Jimmy Bain and Vinny Appice by Simon Wright. It was interesting in that it was Dio’s first real ‘concept album’ inspired as it was by the eternal battle of Good vs. Evil realised on the album as the ‘Magica’ story that Dio recites at the end after a number of vocal interludes.

I must admit I didn’t buy ‘Magica’ when it came out after the disappointment of ‘Angry Machines’ making it the only Dio album I didn’t and years later I still hate the computerized voices in the interludes, though the music on the album itself is something else! Musically ‘Magica’ is great – like the ‘real’ Dio had clicked back in place and though there’s only ten real tracks they take you right back to the glory days! (even if the excuse is the concept!)

Opener ‘Lord of the Last Day’ might lightly echo the doom of previous albums but it also takes us half way back to classic Dio with those sublime backing vocals and Ronnie’s phrasing before ‘Fever Dreams’ and Craig Goldy’s riff (that steals this album) reminds us of the glories of the past. I can’t tell you how much I loved this song at the time and still now it’s up there with Dio’s best!

The real star for me here is Goldy’s guitar which in my mind served Dio better than Gus G before him or Doug after and on songs like ‘Fever Dreams’ its the burning force that makes them. And whilst songs like ‘Turn To Stone’ might fail to ignite tracks like ‘Feed My Head’ are a glorious return to the early Dio sound. The tracks that propel the story forward ‘Eriel’ and ‘Challis’ aren’t bad either, pretty solid, but used more to propel the story forward than anything else.

There’s more great stuff though here: ‘As Long as Its Not About Love’ is a decent ballad if a little ‘by numbers’ and I always had a soft spot for ‘Losing My Insanity’ and it’s Medieval intro. Whatever your feelings on the whole ‘concept’ there’s no doubt the ship was steering in the right direction again after the diversion of ‘Angry Machines’.

As far as the re-releases go the 2 Album Set includes a bonus 7″ of the track ‘Electra’ the last single recorded by the band and one originally released on the ‘Tournado Box Set’ back in 2010 before Ronnie died on May 16th that year. The CD also adds 10 tracks from the ‘Magica Tour’ in 2010 that have never before been released.

KILLING THE DRAGON (2002)

The ‘Dragon’ in question on Dio’s penultimate studio record is technology and particularly how that technology might threaten society in the future. Even 10 years later it’s hard to argue with the premise as we see technology used more to control and subdue society that to help its ordinary citizens.

By 2002 though it was time for more line-up changes and Burning Rain’s Doug Aldrich big break when he came in to replace Craig Goldy on guitar, joining Jimmy Bain and Simon Wright who were back for ‘Magica.’

‘Killing the Dragon’ is a ‘ fan-pleaser ‘ of an album built in the style of ‘Holy Diver’ where it all began. Sure it may not have the magic of that debut but all the elements are there in the incomparable voice and the solid musicianship that surrounds it.

With some songs including the single ‘Push’ co-written with Craig Goldy there’s plenty here to sink your teeth into. And the echoes of the past come thick and fast from opener and title track ‘Killing the Dragon’ which has that classic Dio feel to the wonderful ‘Better In The Dark’ which does indeed sound a lot like ‘Stand Up and Shout’. But there’s also the chunky and unmissable ‘Scream’ and the rather special riff-rider ‘Throw Away Children’ (another co-penned by Goldie) that make this one a really worthy addition to your collection.

The CD/digital version includes 6 tracks recorded live on the Killing The Dragon tour in 2002/2003 in this case the classics ‘Holy Diver’ and ‘Stand Up and Shout’.

MASTER OF THE MOON (2004)

There are some out there who even call the 10th and final album ‘Master of the Moon’ Dio’s best album. Now I wouldn’t go that far but it is an album that has it’s moments and does go some way towards recapturing that classic sound. The album also sees Craig Goldie return for Aldrich and Jimmy Bain tap out again for Jeff Pilson to come back in. ‘Master of the Moon’ also adds a keyboard credit for Scott Warren.

If I was harsh I’d say it’s an album that has no real classics but does have some great songs and most importantly does allow Dio to show why he is universally considered one of the very best voices for this kind of music.

‘One More for the Road’ is a nice start with some great riffs and a killer vocal and whilst it doesn’t take your breath away there’s a cool chorus, and even though the title track itself is a little ponderous it’s still a good song. It’s ‘The End of the World’ though is transportative – we’re right back with early Dio and it’s graced with another inspired Goldie solo.

‘Shivers’ is great too and one of my favourite Dio songs not just on this album and ‘Living a Lie’ is great classic Dio too. And whilst ‘The Man Who Would Be King’ has a nice intro it doesn’t quite take you there. The real wild-card comes with ‘The Eyes’  a chugging, menacing synth-infused epic seemingly about growing big brother style surveillance.

The last couple of tracks on Dio’s last album are great too for different reasons – ‘Death by Love’ is classic Dio with tales of Gypsy Queens and a vintage riff – it has it all. The final word on the final album though is just a little different – ‘In Dreams’ sounds like nothing here and is a song that you can’t place in time, it’s an enigma and Ronnie never sounded better.

The CD/digital version includes 4 bonus tracks recorded live on the Master Of The Moon tour in 2004/2005 as well as the Japanese bonus track ‘Prisoner of Paradise.’

There will never be anyone like RJD and ten years on it still hurts like hell.

Final four Dio albums to be reissued with bonus live tracks

The legendary metal act's output from 1996 to 2004 will be remastered on CD and vinyl

Final four Dio albums to be reissued with bonus live tracks

The final four Dio albums —  Angry Machines ,  Magica ,  Killing the Dragon , and  Master of the Moon —  are receiving deluxe reissues. Due out February 21st,  The Studio Album Collection: 1996–2004 offers remasters of all four albums on vinyl and CD, and digital formats. Additionally, the CD and digital versions include rare live recordings from each album’s accompanying tour.

The announcement is big news for Dio vinyl collectors. Angry Machines is receiving its first official LP release, while  Magica ,  Killing the Dragon , and Master of the Moon will finally be back for the first time in years (prior limited pressings go for astronomical figures on the second-hand market).

“I am very excited to be working with BMG, a label that still has a passion for rock music,” said Wendy Dio, widow of late frontman Ronnie James Dio . “They will be making the complete Dio catalogue available again with some interesting surprises.”

In addition to the standalone 180-gram vinyl LPs, the CD and digital versions of each album include unreleased live recordings from the accompanying tours. Magica  will also be packaged with a limited 7inch of 2009 single “Electra” — the only completed studio recording from the planned  Magica II  album that went unfinished after Dio’s passing in 2010. Longtime Dio collaborator Wyn Davis oversaw the remastering for all of the material, and designer Marc Sasso updated the album artwork for each release.

Dio’s Final Albums to Be Expanded With Previously Unreleased Material

By Kory Grow

Four latter-era Dio albums will be reissued next year with previously unreleased recordings.

Beginning with 1996’s Angry Machines —   including 2000’s Magica and 2002’s Killing the Dragon —  and ending with 2004’s Master of the Moon , each release will feature remastered audio and a bonus disc of rare content. In addition to CD re-releases, each will be available for the first time as standalone vinyl releases with lenticular covers; the Magica vinyl will include a seven-inch of “Electra,” which the band’s late frontman, Ronnie James Dio , had planned for the sequel Magica 2 . Each of the reissues will be available via BMG on physical media and digitally on February 21st.

“I am very excited to be working with BMG, a label that still has a passion for rock music,” the singer’s widow, Wendy, said in a statement. “They will be making the complete Dio catalogue available again with some interesting surprises.”

The CD versions, which feature the bonus material, will come in “mediabook packaging.” The second disc for Angry Machines will include 12 tracks recorded on the tour for that album in 1997. Magica contains live recordings from the 2001 tour in support of that album, as well as “Electra” and an 18-minute, spoken-word recording called “Magica Story.”

Killing the Dragon includes five recordings from 2002 and 2003. And Master of the Moon features four live tracks, recorded in 2004 and 2005, and the previously unreleased studio track “Prisoner of Paradise.” All of the bonus material will be included in the digital releases.

In 2015 —the year Tenacious D won the metal Grammy for a cover of Dio’s “The Last in Line” — actor and Dio fanatic Jack Black paid his respects to Ronnie James Dio in an interview with Rolling Stone . “In this age of electronic music and robotic voice synthesizers, I hope there is a kid out there with the talent and the sense of adventure to follow in Dio’s footsteps,” he said. “Rock & roll could use another Ronnie James Dio right about now.”

Originally released on Mayhem in 1996, then reissued by Spitfire in 2000, Angry Machines was Dio's first effort away from Warner/Reprise, and it does find Ronnie James Dio looking for subtle ways to push into new territory. The lyrics mostly avoid Dio's familiar medieval-fantasy D&D obsessions, instead directing their attention to more real-world concerns (albeit with the same sense of drama). Similarly, there aren't many of the gothic neo-classicisms present on the band's best-known output; and while there are a few progressive sections, Angry Machines is more of a straightforward metal record, full of pounding rhythms and guitars along with plenty of wailing by Ronnie James Dio. The main problem is that the band often seems to concentrate on sound more than songwriting -- the album sounds good while it's playing, but not enough of the riffs or melodies stick with the listener afterwards to judge it a complete return to form. Yet there are enough moments here to make it worth the time of Dio diehards. © Steve Huey /TiVo
