Solang Valley Resort, Kullu

This resort offers some of the most dramatic views—the Dauladhar ranges in the background and the Beas River gushing forth. You can enjoy the views from one of the rooms or from the lawns where breakfast is served. The resort is also a great base to explore winter activities such as snow tubing, snow scooting or skiing on the slopes of Solang Valley. You even set out on winter treks to Dashir Lake, Hampta Pass and Hanuman Tibba. Doubles from Rs8,999. Website

Sunnymead Estate, Shimla

Nestled in oak and rhododendron forests of Shimla, this two-storey cottage is not accessible by a vehicle, but is a short, uphill walk to the doorstep. It's worth every step, though. The home looks out of a fairytale, with vintage-style chairs and Afghan carpets. Each of the three rooms here have a distinct charm, some appointed with four-poster beds and the other adorned with Oriya brass lamps. Breakfasts are four-course meals, whereas tea is accompanied by savoury snacks and a cake. The colonial-era home was built by the lively host Madhavi Bhatia's great-grand uncle, which her mother inherited in 2010. Bhatia moved from Delhi to restore this home a few years ago. For a winter wonderland experience straight out of a fairytale, head to the Himalayan. The ‘castle’ built in Victorian-Gothic Revival style sits at an elevation of 2003 metres, and is surrounded by apple and cherry orchards that overlook snow-capped peaks. The hotel features eight elegant bedrooms and cottages. It even has a crest, turrets and a basement named the Dungeon. Ski down the slopes of Solang Valley or paraglide about 13kms away. Meena Bagh, Ratnari

Delhi's poor air quality prodded photographer Sanjay Austa to quit the city life and move to Himachal Pradesh in 2017. About 80km from the busy town of Shimla, he built this dream abode nestled in the apple orchards of Ratnari. So that other people could experience the magic of the mountain town, Austa opened up his home to guests. The eco-friendly Himachali house crafted from waste wood and mud-plastered walls features four rooms, an attic, lounging areas and single beds, which can accommodate a big party of 15 people. If your idea of a winter break is all about hunkering down in a cosy cottage, with crackling wood fires and warm service, head to the Sonaugi Homestead in Kullu. Set on the slopes of a mountain in a clearing amid a deodar forest, this one is all mood. Five spacious rooms, some with views of the white snow peaks, make this gorgeous homestead, which is built from wood and stone in local Kathkuni style. Wonderful homely food served by Sonaugi’s excellent staff will do justice to your winter appetite. Access to the property involves a bumpy last mile and a five-minute downhill walk, which may be tough on those with weak knees or iffy backs. Hotel occupancy up as tourists throng Himachal to beat the heat

O n Saturday, tourists had to wait for hours in queued vehicles to enter McLeodganj in Dharamshala due to a significant increase in the number of visitors over the past few days.

To beat the heat, tourists are flocking to Himachal Pradesh, causing hotel occupancy to go up at the major tourist destinations in the state. After a slowdown due to the Lok Sabha elections, the state has seen a significant increase in tourism in recent days.

Hoteliers report being flooded with enquiries from tourists in neighbouring states, and many visitors are experiencing difficulties securing accommodations. The hotel occupancy in Dharamshala has seen a substantial surge and is now hovering at 80% and in Kullu-Manali, the hotel occupancy stands at 90%.

Dharamshala Hotel Association president Ashwani Bamba said that the hotel occupancy has witnessed an increase from 50-70% in the last weeks of May to now 90% from the last few days. “The tourist influx is increasing now as there are summer holidays in the neighbouring states. After the third week of May, when elections were over in some states, occupancy had increased to around 50-70% but now it stands at 80-90% on weekends and 50-70% on weekdays,” he said.

The hoteliers in Dharamshala said that they are expecting the influx to continue, as tourists are rushing towards hills, till the monsoon and the hotel occupancy will continue to hover around 80%.

In Kullu-Manali, the increase in tourist influx has led to an accommodation crunch, causing many tourists to face difficulties in finding places to stay. The local hoteliers said that the recent snowfall in higher reaches is one of the reasons for the increased number of tourist arrivals.

Kullu-Manali Paryatan Vikas Mandal president Anup Thakur said that some tourists are finding it difficult to get accommodation as the influx has increased significantly. “As the plains are witnessing scorching heat, the people are rushing towards hills. Recent snowfall in areas like Rohtang has also attracted tourists amid the hot summer. Hotel occupancy is now around 90% which was 70% last month,” he said.

He also said that the government needs to improve the road connectivity at many spots which may facilitate the tourism industry more.

Meanwhile, Varun Thakur, president of the Dharamshala Taxi Union, reported an increase in enquiries and bookings from tourists. “After a slowdown last month, the number of tourists has increased, and taxi rides have also gone up,” he said.

As the flood slowly dried, here arose a place of breath- taking natural beauty which was only appropriate at Manali that life began again. Today this legendary cradle of all human kind is a prime holiday destination. There are high mountains surrounded by snow and deep boulder strewn gorges. There are thick forests full of cool breeze and bird songs. There are fields of wild flowers, small picturesque hamlets and fruit laden orchards. .

ACCESS : The airport at Bhunter is 50 km from Manali where taxis and buses are available. The closest narrow gauge railhead is at Joginder Nagar, 165 km away. The closest broad gauge rail heads are Chandigarh (310 km) and Ambala (355 km). By road the distance from Delhi is 570 km and from Shimla the distance is 280 km. From Delhi, there is a regular HPTDC Luxury and Volvo Coach to Manali. HPTDC runs Luxury coach from Shimla to Manali in tourist season.

CLIMATE : In winter, the temperature can drop to below freezing point when heavy woolens are required. Summer temperature are mild and light woolens / cottons are recommended.

HADIMBA TEMPLE (1 km) : Built in 1553 with a superbly crafted four tiered pagoda roof, it is famous for its exquisitely carved doorway.

MANU TEMPLE (2 km) : This is dedicated to the sage Manu situated at old Manali.

VASHISTH (3 km) : Well known for its hot springs. There are old temples dedicated to the sage Vashisth and to Lord Rama.

MONASTERIES : There are three recently built Tibetan monasteries at Manali.

JAGATSUKH (6 km) : The one time capital of Kullu. Here are old temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and to Sandhya Gayatri. The Arjun caves are just ahead.

SOLANG VALLEY(14 km) : In a picturesque setting this has good ski slopes and picnic spots.

TOWARDS THE ROHTANG PASS : On the road to Keylong is the Nehru Kund (6km) which is a clear water spring scenic spot named after the Late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Kothi (12km) is a picturesque village and has a thrilling view of the deep gorge through which the Beas swiftly races. The beautiful Rahalla falls (16km) are at at altitude of 2500m. A crucial link on the old trade route and still the gateway to trans Himalayan Lahaul, the Rohtang Pass is at height of 3978 m.
