At the new Museum, the Lion Mound Centre, view the battlefield from the top of Lion mound and visit the impressive Waterloo Panorama, one of the largest painted battlefield panoramas in the world. After lunch in the onsite restaurant, we walk down to visit the recently restored Hougoumont Farm. Here we look in-depth at arguably the most important part of the Waterloo battlefield. Observing the memorials, original buildings, gates and loop-holed walls. We then make our way across the battlefield to La Belle Alliance, looking at the battlefield from the French perspective. We end the day at Le Caillou, Napoleon’s General Headquarters. We head back to Brussels for your Eurostar train back to London, or you may wish to stay overnight and explore the wonderful city of Brussels.

waterloo battlefield tours 2022

Beginning in the UK, we travel to France via Dover-Calais Ferry and then on directly to Belgium. Our visits this afternoon include the crossroads of Quatre Bras where, having been beaten to the punch by Napoleon, Wellington scrambled forces to defend the vital link between himself and the Prussian forces. Visits include to Bossu Wood where Saxe-Weimar’s troops saved the day and to Gemioncourt Farm where some of the most bitter fighting of the entire Campaign was seen. A short visit to Ligny to discuss the major Prussian action on the same day completes our first day. Accommodation in Waterloo and evening meal.

Beginning in the town of Waterloo, we visit the Headquarters of the Duke of Wellington on the eve of the battle, today preserved as a fascinating museum, before making our way to the Mont St Jean Ridge. The remainder of our day is spent on foot across the battlefield itself, visiting and studying in detail the ‘battle within a battle’ for Hougoumont Farm. Further visits include the main ridge fighting where British Squares and Artillery took such a toll on Marshal Ney’s courageous but doomed cavalry. Also on the itinerary are Le Haye Sainte and La Belle Alliance in the heart of the battlefield and where Blucher and Wellington met at the end of one of the most famous days in military history.

Our final morning is spent visiting Napoleon’s ‘Dernier Quartier’ and key sites relating to the bloody aftermath of the Battle before returning to the UK via Calais.

Guides 1815 Your guided tour: a unique experience!

Over the last 35 years, the "Guides 1815” unveil the battlefield of Waterloo, through the context of 19th century European history, and the development of the 1815 Campaign.  Why was there a battle, why in Waterloo, who were the adversaries, how did the battle unfold, and what were the consequences…The answers to these questions will enrich your visit to the best preserved battlefield in Europe.

They will bring to life before your eyes the battles of June 16, 1815 that took place in Ligny and Quatre-Bras. And, at the very place where the battle of Waterloo took place on Sunday June 18, 1815, in the fields south of Waterloo, you can follow its developments in detail: in a few sentences explaining this bloody episode in European history (12,000 dead and 35,000 wounded), you will hear, through the voice of your guide, sound the trumpets and sound the cannons, you will see the impetuous riders saber clear, and, from the top of the Lion's Mound, you will be the privileged witness of the arrival of the Prussians. And you will see the imperial guard retreat…

So you will know why Napoleon lost this battle, and understand its consequences for Belgium and Europe.

Tour Introduction

Waterloo is a fascinating but subtle battlefield. Wellington’s eye for terrain and talent for drawing his opponent onto ground of his own choosing allowed him to observe enemy dispositions and approach routes whilst concealing his own troops thus achieving tactical surprise which was key to his success. Under the guidance of Ashley Truluck, former soldier and past chairman of the Society for Army Historical Research, you will gain that same insight. Ashley has spent a lifetime studying Wellington’s command style and tactics: he lived for 3 years near Waterloo, knows the battlefield intimately and he is a keen walker: the perfect host to guide you ‘off piste’ to provide a general’s perception of what it would be like to command and fight on the battlefields of Ligny, Quatre Bras and especially Waterloo. These will be a series of country walks, not a route march, during which we cover about 5 or 6 miles a day, with stops for lunch and beverages. There is nothing here that any reasonably fit weekend walker couldn’t cope with but what this tour really offers is fresh air, a fresh perspective, and a chance to enjoy the surprisingly peaceful and pretty Belgian countryside in the convivial company of fellow walkers.

The Waterloo Campaign in June 1815 ensured relative peace in Western Europe for the next fifty years. It was the first time that the two greatest commanders of the era, Napoleon and Wellington, met each other in battle and it was to be the last campaign for both of them. It was also the last campaign for grand old Marshal Blucher whose Prussian Army, having been trounced at Ligny, nevertheless arrived in the nick of time to tip the scales in the Allies’ favour as Wellington’s ‘infamous army’, already tested at Quatre Bras, hung on grimly to the ridge at Waterloo.

"Guides were excellent, and there was a good balance between military history and local sightseeing"

Day 1 – Brussels & Waterloo Town

Depart London St Pancras by Eurostar to Brussels in time for a stroll into and around the magnificent Grand Place and Royal Park where the story of the Waterloo campaign begins. On to Waterloo town to visit Wellington’s headquarters opposite our comfortable hotel in the centre of the town and our base for the tour. Welcoming drinks and evening talk before dinner.

Day 2 – Ligny & Quatre Bras

We walk from the French positions and follow their attack route across fields into the riverside village of Ligny to get a feel for its tenacious defence by Prussian troops. Then up through cornfields for a panoramic view from the site of Blucher’s windmill – where he and Wellington met prior to the battle. We take lunch at Pierpont farmhouse (now a golf club) where the concurrent battle of Quatre Bras opened. After viewing the battlefield from the strategic crossroads which give the battle its name, we walk out to Cherry Wood on the British left flank and thence cross the very centre of the battlefield, discussing the highlights as we go. We end our day by driving the route of Wellington’s skilful withdrawal through Genappe to Waterloo where we will take dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 3 – Waterloo

After surveying the battlefield from Napoleon’s command post at La Belle Alliance, we start our walk from the excellent new Hougoumont visitor centre, walking the length of the Allied Ridge discussing the French infantry and cavalry attacks as we go. After lunch near La Haye Sainte we push on to the British left flank and – weather permitting - around to see where the Prussians fell on Napoleon’s flank at Plancenoit where we stop for refreshment in the picturesque village square. Dinner tonight will be in a friendly bistro on the battlefield itself.

Day 4 – Finale

We return to the battlefield to walk the route of the Imperial Guard’s famous final attack to the very site where they clashed with Wellington’s elite guards and light troops. The story of the battle will unfold as we go along. Thence to the excellent new Waterloo Visitor Centre on the battlefield where we will also enjoy our lunch stop. Then back to Brussels to catch our Eurostar train getting us back to London by early evening.

“We have no hesitation in giving you a 10/10, and highly recommend Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours. Adrienne & Graham Buttner Bombing of Darwin Anniversary Tour I really enjoyed the tour it was enjoyable, entertaining and informative, could not have asked for anything better. Jack Thomason Bombing of Darwin Anniversary Tour Amazing!  My sister and I visited the Western Front and experienced a one day private tour on the Ypres Salient and also a one day private tour on the Somme. As I go through my photographs of the 3 weeks we spent in Europe, it is these 2 days that I keep coming back to and would class as the highlight of the trip. The information provided was first class, the effort to locate some of our ancestors who did not make it home was very much appreciated and the whole experience was extremely moving.

I know that these 2 days will stay with me forever.

Absolutely incredible!

Erdem as guide, Roachie as our historian and Zafir as our fearless bus driver.

I would like to recommend highly the Western Front Battlefields Tour.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The whole experience was one I will remember.

The Tour Guide was very knowledgeable and approachable. The facilities were amazing.

I have been in complete awe of the service and experience from Mat McLachlan tours.

Not only was my family and I reassured about our safety from the moment we booked but we knew we were in safe hands the moment we started the tour.

Visit the Battlefield of Waterloo in Belgium

The Lion’s Mound and panoramic painting of the Battle of Waterloo (1815) are the main sights to see on a day-trip to the battlefield (Champ de Bataille) from Brussels.

Leeuw van Waterloo

The main sights to see at the site of the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815) near Brussels in Belgium are the Lion’s Mound, a huge panoramic painting, and a visitors’ center with extracts from movies. Further smaller monuments and memorials are scattered throughout the battlefield, which has mostly returned back to ordinary farmland. The farmhouses (fermes) famous from the battle including Mont-St-Jean, Papelotte, Belle-Alliance, Haie Sainte and Hougoumont are still in existence. The Battlefield of Waterloo and the panoramic painting has been added to the tentative list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites.

Battlefield  of Waterloo (Champ de Bataille)

The Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, saw over 250,000 men from at least seven nations in action. More than 11,000 were left dead and 33,000 wounded. It was one of the largest and bloodiest pre-twentieth-century European battles.

Tourism at the battlefield started on June 19, 1815, when the upper classes arrived by coach from Brussels to take a look. It has continued ever since and will probably be at a high point during the bicentenary in 2015.

Waterloo Panoramic Painting

The rest of the battlefield has mostly returned to normal farming. Smaller memorials and monuments are scattered throughout the area. Maps can be bought or guided tours booked at the visitors’ center.

The formal sites at the Lion’s Hamlet, for which admission is charged, are the Lion’s Mound, two movies and the panoramic painting. (The rather embarrassingly bad wax museum has closed.)

A new visitors center is being built underground and should open by early 2015. It should hopefully present a better overview of the battle and offer better value for money than the current half-hearted attempt.

Lion’s Mound (Butte de Lion) at Waterloo

Lion's Mound at Waterloo

Willem previously fought with the British in various conflicts and was the commander of the I Allied Corps at both the Battle of Quatre Bras (16 June 1815) and more famously Waterloo (18 June 1815). In parts of The Netherlands, which at the time included present-day Belgium, he was hailed as  the  hero of Waterloo. As heir to the throne this image was encourage and in part inspired the erection of the large memorial.

Climbing the Lion’s Mound at Waterloo

A bicycle is an ideal way to explore the area, as distances can be long for hiking and many paths not open to cars. Unfortunately, no bike rental shops are available in the region.

Many sites and memorials should be improved for the bicentenary. The Ferme Hougoumont – where the garden and orchard changed hands seven times during the battle – is being restored for 2015.

Battle of Waterloo Movies

The movies shown in theaters at the visitors’ center next to the Lion’s Mound are a good in introduction to the Battle of Waterloo and a great place to start the visit if unfamiliar with the details of the famous battle.

The first movie is a documentary on developments in Europe that led to the battle and the actual battle itself. The second is extracts from the epic  Waterloo  (1970) by Sergei Bondarchuk.

Each movie is just over 20 minutes long but as visitors move on to a different theater for the second movie, new screenings start every 20 minutes. Audio is in French with English and Dutch subtitles. German visitors, despite the role Prussia played in the allied victory, may feel done in.

The Waterloo Panoramic Painting

Waterloo Panoramic Painting 804

Most of the rotunda building, with a diameter of 35 m, is taken up by the large painting but at the lower level is a scale model of the Ferme Hougoumont and further graphics explaining the battle.

These kind of panoramic paintings were hugely popular in Europe, especially during the late-19 th  century. Visitors admire the paintings from a raised platform – 5 m high here – in the center of the circular display to feel part of the action.

Around 30 of these paintings survived in Europe – amongst others on display include the Panorama Mesdag in The Hague and Thun Wocher Panorama in Switzerland. Modern attractions also favors this format using video screens around the audience for a 360° experience, e.g. Arromanches 360° on the D-Day Invasion in Normandy.

Waterloo Tickets and Opening Hours

Three kinds of tickets are available to see the attractions at the Hameau du Lion:

  • Lion’s Mound & Panoramic Painting – €7 (€4.50 for children 7-17)
  • Pass Hameau du Lion (admission to the Lion’s Mound, Panorama and movies) – €9 (€7 for children 7-17 & students)
  • Pass 1815 (Pass Hameau, Wellington Museum & Last HQ of Napoleon) – €13.50 (€8 for children 7-17, €11 for students)

The Pass 1815 gives a discount of €6 on individual entries but many may find the Pass Hameau du Lion costing a bit much for seeing fairly little.

Tickets are sold at the visitors center, online, or the Pass 1815 from any of the three attractions and the tourist information office in Waterloo.

The attractions at the Hameau du Lion are open daily from 9:30 to 18:30 from April to September and 10:00 to 17:00 from October to March. The attractions are open 365 days a year. The other memorials are unfenced and like the battlefield itself always open.

Guided tours of the battlefield and the smaller memorials can be booked onsite or in advance.

Food and drink are available from the Café Wellington adjacent to the visitors’ center. However, as at most major tourist attractions, better food and lower prices are easier found elsewhere. Waterloo town has many options and further restaurants are open at lunchtime in smaller villages in the region.

Transportation to the Battlefield of Waterloo

Visitor Guide to Waterloo

waterloo battlefield tours 2022

Getting There | What to See | Further Afield | Much Further Afield

The Battlefield of Waterloo is in southern Belgium and is about a 2 and a half hour drive from Calais (Chunnel or Ferry). Sat nav will almost certainly take you around the Brussels ring road. All I can say is don’t go there! From Calais take the route to Lille in France and then on to Waterloo. Lille at rush hour is congested but nothing like Brussels!

The battlefield is in better shape for a visit than it has been for decades with a new underground visitors centre opened in 2015.

The battlefield actually lies some three miles south of the town of Waterloo and decisions on how to get there and where to stay, can be very important for your enjoyment of the visit. This guide has been put together to help you make the right decisions for your specific needs.

Getting there

Being situated 23km from Brussels, and about 32km from Brussels International Airport, you have a number of options depending on how you have arrived and what mode of transport you wish to use.

For Satnav – Address for Battlefield is Route du Lion 315, Waterloo 1410, Belgium

Please note, that the Route du Lion is now permanently closed at the Lion Mound. Therefore it is best to approach towards the Battlefield Visitor Centre from the north west (from Braine l’Alleud) as the car park is on this side of the Lion Mound.

Having arrived at Brussels Airport at Zaventem, you can either pick up a hire car, take a taxi or train to Waterloo.

If taking a taxi, it will cost about E40 each way and will take about 30 minutes except at peak periods for traffic around Brussels, when it could take double the time and double the cost! A taxi for a group can be quite cost effective.

If by train, catch a train from the airport to Brussels Midi station. Here you can catch a train to Waterloo, which goes about ever hour for E5 each way, (if staying in the town) or Braine l’Alleud if preferred if simply going to the battlefield for the day.

It will cost about E10 to catch a taxi from either station to the Lion Mound. However, taxis are rarely to be found at the station, be prepared to walk or have the phone number of a local taxi company handy.

Trains from London and all other international trains normally alight at Brussels Midi, from which you an easily transfer to a local train going to Waterloo or Braine l’Alleud every hour for about E5 each way.

Catch the W Bus or the 365 Bus, both from Brussels. You can purchase a ticket off the driver.

What To See

The new battlefield visitor centre.

One of the best new museums at Waterloo is the fantastic new underground Visitor Centre adjacent to the Panorama. It is a thousand percent better than the old centre (for those that went there before 2015). The 3D film is actually pretty good and is highly recommended. You can view the only complete skeleton uncovered at Waterloo (named by yours truly as Private Friedrich Brandt 2nd Line Battalion King’s German Legion). Plenty to see and do for all ages.

Allow 1-2 Hours

Opening times

26th March to 30th September: 9:30AM to 6:30PM 1st October to 25th March: 10:00AM to 6:00PM Last entry 45 minutes before closing

Ticket Prices

Individual site tickets can be purchased, but it is highly recommended buying a group ticket PASS 1815 (all Inclusive) Covers Wellington Museum, Le Caillou, Visitor Centre, Panorama, Lion Mound, Hougoumont and Mont St Jean

Adults (over 17) E21 Children Under 17 E17

Please Note

When you visit the Visitor Centre and purchase tickets it comes in two parts. The white barcoded ticket allows you into the Centre, Panorama and up the Mound.  This part has to be used on the day of purchase.  You also receive a card which you show at the other locations to allow you access to Le Caillou,  Hougoumont, Mont St Jean and Wellington’s HQ.  You have up to one year to visit these locations.

Access to the Lion Mound and Panorama is now through the visitor centre and is included in the price of the ticket.

Those with limited mobility can enjoy full access to the Visitor Centre, but cannot see the Lion Mound or Panorama as this includes a number of steps.

Lion Mound

The mound was built between 1820 and 1825 to commemorate the victory, but it has always been controversial as it significantly altered the battlefield in its construction. It does however, offer excellent views over the battlefield on a good day, but does tend to make the battlefield appear flat, which is far from true. The climb should however, only be attempted by someone who is relatively fit, as it has 226 steep steps up to the viewing platform (there is no lift).

The Panorama

Painted in 1912 by Louis Dumoulin, it attempts to portray a 360 degree view of the great cavalry charges during the middle of the battle. Although it has seen some renovation, with sounds and smells, it is of minor interest, being of its time.

waterloo battlefield tours 2022

The Chateau/Farm Complex of Hougoumont was the scene of intense fighting throughout the day and was virtually its own battle within a battle. The farm is really worth the effort of visiting it, although unfortunately at present there is little actually on site to help the visitor understand its importance. A little bit of prior knowledge is therefore an advantage. Plans are apparently afoot to improve significantly this part of the visitor experience with large signs at significant points and improved displays in the entrance area. The farm/chateau complex has recently been fully refurbished and now includes a viewing platform, the wonderful new British Memorial and a slightly odd visual presentation in the Great Barn.

Allow 1 Hour

Opening Times 26/03 to 30/09 09.30 to 18.30 01/10 to 25/03 10.00 to 18.00 There is a free shuttle bus from the visitor centre to Hougoumont (and return) every half an hour for those who do not wish to make the twenty-five minute walk along the allied ridge line to get there. Those with Impaired Mobility can enjoy full access although the cobbled yard can be a bit of a challenge.

La Belle Alliance

For anybody who would like to rent a beautiful apartment on the actual battlefield for your visit, please take a look at the Landmark Trust Website.

La Belle Alliance

Although its name has made it famous, it is a nightclub and cannot be visited.

Plancenoit Village

There are a number of French and Prussian memorials at Plancenoit, but there are no museums here. The church which now dominates the village centre and the one that was a prominent part of the fighting here, are unfortunately not the same.

La Haye Sainte

La Haye Sainte

The farm of La Haye Sainte is privately owned and the family request that visitors respect their privacy.

Mont St Jean Farm

The farm was used as a major field hospital during the battle. It has recently been expertly renovated and now contains a museum on the medical aspects of the battle and a brewery for Waterloo Beer (it comes highly recommended by the author!) both of which can be visited.

Allow 30 Minutes

Mont St Jean Farm

Opening Times: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Prices Now Included in All Inclusive 1815 Ticket from the Battlefield Visitor Centre

If visited alone 7.5 Euros for Museum and additional 5 Euros for Brewery Tour including beer tasting (small). The Farm of Mont St Jean lies a few hundred metres north of the battlefield and has a carpark in its rear.

There is also a very nice restaurant on site

Opening Times From 1 October to 31 March 10.00hr to 17.00hr. From April 1 to September 30 of 9.30hr to 18.00hr.

waterloo st joseph

The Museum is to be found in the centre of Waterloo. It was an inn in 1815 and was used by the Duke of Wellington as his headquarters. The bed in which Colonel Gordon died is still in the house. The rear building is now used for special exhibitions and there are a number of gravestones in the garden.

St Joseph’s Chapel

Opening Hours The church is open to visitors during normal hours (outside times of services), free of charge. There are a very large number of memorials within.

It stands opposite Wellington’s Museum.

Allow 30 minutes

Le Caillou

1472 Vieux GenappeOpening Times 10 a.m. to 18.30 p.m.

Napoleon’s headquarters lies some 4 km south of the battlefield on the Genappe road. It has very limited parking. The small museum has recently been refurbished, but is now if possible a little too child friendly. Looking for the original artefacts? Turn the boards with images of soldiers around and there you have them. Press a button to view the French skeleton (actually a conglomeration of a number of different skeletons). In the garden there are a number of commemorative tablets and the Ossuary (a deposit for bones discovered on the battlefield).

Evere Cemetery

Allow 30 minutes Open Tues-Sun 08.30 – 16.30

In 1890 it was decided to have a major monument for the British dead who could be individually identified. Between 1890-4 a number of bodies interred around the Waterloo battlefield were moved here and placed in the crypt. 15 men are now buried here.

Army Museum Brussels

Allow 1 Hour Location Parc du Cinquantenaire 3, Brussels 1000 Open Tues- Sun 09.00 – 17.00 Price 5 Euros

The Museum of the Armed Forces covers the history of the Belgian forces throughout history, but it does have a decent section of artefacts from the period of Waterloo

Genappe Bridge

Genappe village lies about 8km south of Waterloo battlefield and can be reached by bus, but car is easier (there is a large carpark at the bottom of the valley near the bridge). There are no museums here and no major monuments, whilst the course of the river has been altered and the bridge is virtually hidden now. It is however, possible to still see how restrictive the road was for the cavalry as they passed through the main street.

Quatre Bras

The battlefield of Quatre Bras lies about 12km south of Waterloo battlefield. There is a bus service, but realistically you need to drive to Quatre Bras. There are no museums here, many of the farms such as Gemioncourt are private property or converted into golf clubs. The woods have been removed and buildings continue to spring up, slowly the battlefield is disappearing. The huge farm that stood on the junction of the crossroads for over two hundred years has been recently demolished. This battlefield is now only for the real die-hard.

There are a number of major memorials at the crossroads (turn fifty yards onto the Nivelles road), whilst the monument to the Duke of Brunswick stands a mile south of the crossroads.

Ligny

Ligny Battlefield

The battlefield of Ligny covers a very large area and is a serious walk, it is therefore much easier to visit the area by car. Sombreffe Church maintains a French cannonball embedded in a wall and Ligny has a few farmhouses and monuments from the period, but all of these farms are private property.

Museum Gerard

There is a small but very good museum at Ligny, housed in a farmhouse which was used as a hospital at the time of the battle.

Museum Address 5140 Ligny, Belgium Opening hours Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 1pm to 5pm. Prices 5 Euros per person (not included in the 1815 ticket)

Ballroom

This hidden gem, is rarely visited. It was the home of King Louis XVIII whilst in exile at Ghent during the Waterloo campaign. Visits are guided and excellent. The ballroom/reception room where the king met all of the officers of the British regiments marching to Brussels is truly magnificent. Highly recommended.

Where to stay?

Varying budgets and wants/needs mean that it is difficult to give a definitive list, but I mention here a few that I can personally recommend.

Martin’s Grand Hotel and Lodge

Chaussée de Tervuren 198, 1410 Waterloo, Belgium

The best hotel in the area, but also most expensive, is Martin’s Grand Hotel which is 4*, Rooms are good and the breakfast (full English) and other facilities, excellent. (Average price 140- 200 Euros per room per night including breakfast). The hotel provides free parking but is 3 miles from the battlefield. It is however, a very short walk from Waterloo town centre, its museums, restaurants and excellent shops.

If you can, book into the Lodge, a newer development which stands alongside the main Hotel. It provides 3* accommodation, hence cheaper (although the rooms are very well equipped), but you still get to enjoy breakfast and all other facilities of the main hotel included! (Average 100-160 Euros)

Route du Lion 367-369, 1410 Waterloo, Belgium

This hotel is 3* but has a 5* location, being the only hotel actually on the battlefield. It’s rooms are however pretty basic and the restaurant very French in every way!(no English spoken). It has no air conditioning and the rooms in the roof get stiflingly hot in very warm periods. Breakfast is an adequate continental breakfast. Has free parking.

Best Features

Location, views (ask for a 1st floor room overlooking the road – great vistas of battlefield), excellent restaurants next door, cheap (average E 70-90 per night for a room).

Ibis Hotel 3*

Boulevard Henri Rolin 5A, Waterloo 1410, Belgium –

Central Location in Waterloo town, within a mile of the main restaurant area, Hotel nice friendly staff and modern, you get what you would expect from an Ibis, no more no less. Breakfast a good standard

Prices around 80E Per night.

There are a number of other hotels, but I am unable to make recommendations not having used them. If others would like to supply me their recommendations I will happily include them.

We need your support.

In 2022, we were elated to return to the battlefield for the first time since 2019 with a team of 100 people, including 20 veterans and serving personnel from 4 different countries, and a welfare team of medical professionals. But excavation - and all the travel, food, equipment, accommodation and more it requires - comes at a cost.

We rely on the generosity of individuals and organisations to fund our programmes, which offer support to those who have served their country when they need it the most. Without donations from the public, we would not be able to carry out our work. If you can help us offset the costs of excavation, we would be incredibly grateful for any contribution you can make.

Donations in kind, such as equipment or transportation, are also more than welcome - please contact [email protected] to discuss this further.

#WU22: Overview

Tony Pollard

We explored this site looking for evidence of the bloody, back-and-forth fighting between Prussian and French troops that took place here, as the village continuously changed hands. The Prussian victory served as a major turning point in the battle, but has often been overlooked in historical accounts of the battle.
