HALF DAY MORNING TOUR

4 hours from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm 

Adventure begins at Whitefish Marine with check-in, orientation and equipment fitting.

Once complete, your party will drive 11 miles to Swift Creek Trailhead where you will meet your snowmobile guide.

Approximately 3 hours of the time is spent exploring the beauty of Montana on your snowmobile!

HALF DAY AFTERNOON TOUR

4 Hours 11:30 am - 3:30 pm  

Once complete, your party will drive approximately 30 minutes to Swift Creek Trailhead where you will meet the snowmobile attendant and guides.

7 hours from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm  

Approximately 6 hours of the time is spent exploring the beauty of Montana on your snowmobile!

Not for the meek, the 110-mile loop over Canyon Creek treks through the heart of Whitefish, stopping at the summit of Whitefish Mountain.  With sweeping views of Glacier Park, the Great Bear Wilderness and Hungry Horse Reservoir, Desert Mountain Trail is a local favorite.  Cruise through remote woods and view wildlife in frozen meadows along the Upper Whitefish Lake Trail.

Where can I go snowmobiling?

With over 200-miles of groomed trails and thousands of miles of National Forest, Whitefish offers some of the best terrain for snowmobiling. Due to restrictions, snowmobiles are not allowed inside Glacier National Park, however visitors will find that many trails circumvent the park’s borders and offer spectacular mountain views.

Canyon Creek With a trailhead located just outside Columbia Falls, Canyon Creek features miles of groomed trails which traverse the summit of Whitefish Mountain. It is one of the most popular snowmobiling routes in northwest Montana, so don’t expect to have the backcountry tundra to yourself. 

• Distance: 110-miles 
• Average Time: 3 to 5 hours 
• Elevation Gain: 6,817 
• Difficulty: Moderate 
• Trail Type: Loop 
• Trailhead: Flathead Forest Service Road 316, located 5-miles north of Columbia Falls.

Desert Mountain You may not be able to snowmobile inside Glacier Park, but the Desert Mountain snowmobile trail is almost as good. Blazing a trail to the summit of Desert Mountain, this trail promises some of the best views of Glacier National Park, Hungry Horse Reservoir and the Great Bear Wilderness.

• Average Time: 2 to 3 hours 
• Elevation Gain: 6,363 
• Difficulty: Easy 
• Trailhead: Just outside Martin City off Highway 40, east of Columbia Falls

Upper Whitefish Lake Offering miles of groomed trails and connected to one of the longest snowmobile trail networks outside of Olney, the Upper Whitefish Lake Trail offers a short loop through remote wooded areas around the Whitefish Mountains and connects to Werner’s Peak Trail.

Snowmobiling is not permitted in Glacier National Park but is available near area ski resorts like Whitefish and Fernie, both supplying rental equipment and tours. The Flathead Valley boasts more than 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails maintained by the Flathead Snowmobile Association. Snowmobilers can enjoy various US Forest Service roads and about 1,700 miles of snowmobiling access in Flathead National Forest.

Though not permitted within Glacier National Park boundaries, snowmobiling is a popular Winter sport near Glacier National Park.

The north shore of Flathead Lake area offers more than 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and forest service roads about an hour from Glacier Park Airport.

Where to go Snowmobiling

Check out Whitefish Ski Resort, offering snowmobile tours that offer great views of Glacier National Park, the Flathead Valley, the Swan Mountain Range, and Canadian Rockies, as well as Fernie Ski Resort.

While much of Flathead National Forest’s 2.3 million acres is designated as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System and prohibits snowmobiling, there are 1.3 million non-wilderness acres with about 1, 700 miles of access and forest service roads allowing motorized sledding. Maps are available at Ranger District offices.

Trail systems maintained by the Flathead Snowmobile Association include:

• Canyon Creek to Big Mountain Resort – this 110-mile system begins north of Columbia Falls, traverses Werner Peak, and connects to Olney and Taylor Creek trails.
• Stryker Peak/Mount Marston’s 70-mile trail system leads over Whitefish Mountain Range to upper Whitefish and Red Meadow Lakes.
• Between Hungry Horse and the Great Bear Wilderness , snowmobilers can sled 25 trail miles to Desert Mountain area.
• Crane Mountain trail system – this 38-mile trail system is located South of Bigfork, between Flathead Lake and Swan Lake.

Limited snowmobiling access is permitted on specific trails in the Coram Experimental Forest near Hungry Horse. Great Bear, Bob Marshall and Mission Mountain Wilderness areas, as well as the Jewel Basin Hiking area do not permit snowmobiling.
