28 Things To Do in Braga, Portugal

Impressive Views, Braga, Portugal

Now that we have the basics covered, let’s get to our list of the Top Braga Things To See!

Save, Pin or Bookmark this Braga Travel Guide to plan your trip to Portugal!

#1 Climb the Stairs to Bom Jesus do Monte Braga

Stairs up to Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga, Portugal

We are kicking off our list with a must-see Braga attraction: Santuario do Bom Jesus do Monte. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has been a pilgrimage destination since the 14th century and the complex – complete with a striking staircase – took more than 600 years to complete.

Climbing the 577-steps to the hill-topping Igreja do Bom Jesus do Monte de Braga Church is, without a doubt, one of the top Braga things to do. The ornate flight of stairs features an elaborate zigzag design – and there are statues, fountains and chapels that adorn the route.

Grounds of the Braga Bom Jesus Religious Site, Portugal

An alternative to the steep climb is riding the historic funicular, which dates to 1882. Operating with a counterbalance water-weight system, it’s a unique way up the hill, but we think the stairs are much more interesting!

At the summit, visitors can tour the church, take in the panoramic views with a coffee or ice cream and even relax on the lake in a row boat!

Tips for Visiting Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga

Church at Bom Jesus, Braga, Portugal

The complex is located to the east of the Braga city center and is best reached by car, bus or taxi. We recommend that day trippers go directly to Bom Jesus do Monte on arrival in Braga. From the train station, catch the #2 Bus that terminates at the funicular near the bottom of the stairs.

Note that Bom Jesus do Monte is the only site on our list that is outside of the city center. All other attractions can be reached on foot.

#2 Walk under Arco da Porto Nova

View of Arco da Porto Nova, Braga, Portugal

An ornamental gate in Braga City, Arco da Porta Nova dates to the early 1500s. At that time, Braga was encircled by defensive walls – and the gate provided the western entrance to one of the main thoroughfares.

In the 18th century, the gate was renovated into a triumphal arch that features a Baroque design on the western façade, while the east-facing side is Neoclassical.

#3 Taste a Famous Braga Pastry

Tibias de Braga Bakery, Braga, Portugal

Getting a taste of the local fare is one of the best Braga, Portugal things to do. We recommend trying the signature pastry – Tibias de Braga – at the namesake bakery.

Created in a convent and named for the tibia bone (which the pastry slightly resembles), indulging in a Tibias de Braga is a delicious way to begin your Braga tour. The sweet confection is comprised of a crispy fried dough that is filled with cream and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

#4 Tour Palacio dos Biscainhos and Gardens

Gardens at Palacio dos Biscainhos, Braga, Portugal

An elegant 18th century residence of a noble family, Palacio dos Biscinhos Museum and Gardens offers visitors a glimpse into Braga’s sophisticated past. For those interested in history, the palace is one of the top things to see in Braga.

Guests can join a guided tour to learn more about the artwork, furniture and ceramics on display, as well as the daily lives of the family who lived there.

Not to be missed are the gorgeous Baroque gardens, complete with fountains, statues and the biggest tulip tree in Portugal!

There is a small fee to tour the mansion, but the gardens are open to the public for free.

#5 Visit Igreja do Populo Church

Exterior of the Populo Church, Braga, Portugal

Igreja do Populo is the first of many churches that we feature on our list of Things To Do Braga – and, in our opinion, it’s one of the best. The sumptuous interior is highlighted by gilded Baroque design and the walls are sheathed in typical Portuguese azulejo tiles.

The structure dates to the 16th century, but the façade was refurbished in the 18th century with an enhanced Neoclassical style. The adjoining building was a convent, but is now used by the local government.

#6 Peruse Produce at Mercado Municipal de Braga

Inside the Mercado Municipal de Braga, Portugal

A feast for the senses (and the stomach), the Braga Mercado Municipal is a fascinating place to visit during a trip to Braga. Fresh markets have been held in Braga for more than 2000 years, but the current market hall is a distinctive blend of old and new.

The traditional market square – complete with a central fountain – sits under the roof of a modern building. Farmers, butchers and fishmongers all sell their goods just as they have for centuries. Meanwhile, shoppers can sample local fare at the contemporary food court – and dine on an elevated, outdoor terrace.

#7 Admire the Architecture in Praca do Municipio

View of Praca do Municipio, Braga, Portugal

Centered on the Pelicano Fountain and ringed with grandiose architecture, Praca do Municipio is, perhaps, the most beautiful square in the city of Braga.

The area was originally developed in the late 16th century as a bullfighting ring. Then in the 18th century, the Archbishop’s Palace (now the public library) and the Camara Municipal (Town Hall) were built on opposite sides of the square – and the center was used as a marketplace.

#8 See the Se Cathedral Braga

Exterior view of Se Cathedral Braga, Portugal

The cathedral – called the Se de Braga – ranks as the oldest cathedral in all of Portugal. The history of the church can be traced to the year 1089, but the edifice has been modified over time. The façade was constructed in the 1400s and the Baroque embellishments were added in 1723.

Designated as a National Monument in 1910, the Se Cathedral is a must-see Braga sight. A small fee is required to enter the church – and a combination ticket allows access into adjoining chapels, the sacristy and Treasury Museum.

Note that the Igreja da Misericordia de Braga, which faces Rua do Souto, is a separate church from the Se Cathedral. This 16th century church is notable for its sculptures and fine Baroque details, but unfortunately, it was closed during our visit.

#9 Strut down Rua do Souto, Braga

Houses and Fountain on Rua do Souto, Braga, Portugal

A main thoroughfare in Old Town Braga, Portugal, Rua do Souto Street is the city’s original shopping lane. The path, which connects Arco da Porta Nova to Avenida Central, was established in 1466 as a route through town to Braga Castle. Merchants moved in to capitalize on the foot traffic and shops line the street to this day.

Largo do Paco – a spacious square on the north side of Rua do Souto – is framed by the former Bishop’s Palace (Paco Episcopal de Braga). An 18th century fountain, Chafariz do Castelo, stands in the center of the square. Get an up-close look at the fountain…and then take in the view of the colorful buildings along Rua do Souto.

It’s interesting to note that while Rua do Souto is now pedestrian-only, Braga Tram #1 used to rattle down tracks along the street from the early 1900s until 1963.

#10 Partake in a Quirky Braga Tradition

Entrance to Casa das Bananas, Braga, Portugal

Take a break while sightseeing Braga to partake in a rather unusual tradition in Braga: Muscatel wine and a banana at Casa das Bananas.

Christmas Eve is the official day of the big banana-and-wine event, when thousands of people descend on Casa das Bananas for the experience. Theories abound about how exactly the Braga Bananeiro ritual began, but somewhere along the way it was noted that fortified muscatel wine goes quite well with a ripe banana.

While the shop garners the most attention during the month of December, guests can order a glass of muscatel along with a banana at Casa das Bananas year-round.

#11 Smell the Flowers in Jardim de Santa Barbara

View of the Fountain and Jardim de Santa Barbara, Braga, Portugal

A breathtaking garden in the middle of the city, Jardim de Santa Barbara is an urban oasis – and one of the best things to see in Braga, Portugal.

The garden itself, with manicured landscapes, cedar topiaries and a multitude of flower beds, is a beautiful sight, but its location heightens the appeal. The Santa Barbara Garden sits just outside of the crenellated walls of the Paco Episcopal de Braga Medieval Palace – along with arched ruins.

At the center of the garden is a fountain topped with a statue of Saint Barbara, for whom the garden is named.

#12 Look Up at the Braga Tower

Looking up at the Braga Tower, Portugal

Beginning in the 14th century, Old Town Braga was enclosed by protective walls – and a series of lookout towers were built to keep intruders at bay. Although most of the walls, gates and towers have been demolished, the Keep Tower of Braga Castle remains.

Standing alone at a height of nearly 100 feet, the Braga Tower offers visitors a glimpse of what the city may have looked like during Medieval times. The north side of the façade still bears the original Royal Coat of Arms.

#13 Stop for a Coffee at a Classic Braga Café

Exterior of Café A Brasileira, Braga, Portugal

Stopping for a coffee at a historic café is one of the fun things to see and do in Braga, Portugal – and there are two iconic cafes that are just steps apart.

Café Vianna, housed in the Arcada Building that fronts Republic Square, is the oldest café in the city, dating to 1871. Featuring a majestic interior, the café is a meeting point for locals and tourists.

Nearby, on a corner of Largo Barao de Sao Martinho Square, Café A Brasileira stands as another time-old Braga café. Opened in 1907 as a franchise of the original Lisbon outpost, Café A Brasileira is known for its drip coffee and exceptional desserts – and they serve full meals in the upstairs dining room.

#14 Stroll through Jardim da Avenida Central

People walking on Jardim da Avenida Central, Braga, Portugal

The beautifully landscaped Avenida Central Gardens stretch out from the arched Arcade building and fountain in Praca da Republica. The pretty park was once just a rural route to St. Victor Church – and by the 17th century, the path was lined with churches, convents and regal residences, most of which survive in some form today.

Jardim da Avenida Central was formally transformed into a public green space in the mid-1800s. Complete with a bandstand, monumental statues and flowering trees, the pretty park is a highlight of Braga sightseeing.

#15 Enjoy Art and Gardens at Museu Nogueira da Silva

Gardens at Museu Nogueira da Silva, Braga, Portugal

A Braga born philanthropist, Antonio Nogueira da Silva donated much of his fortune – including his residence – to the city. His home has been renovated into a museum exhibiting fine Portuguese and international artworks, such as paintings, porcelain, sculptures, azulejos and silver. A ticket is required to see the main exhibits at the museum.

Concealed at the back of the property is a gorgeous, French-inspired garden featuring roses, flower beds, fountains, sculptures and lovely blue-and-white tiles (which are interestingly not Portuguese azulejos, but Delft Tiles from a palace in the Netherlands). There is no charge to enter the gardens; making it one of the best places to visit in Braga, Portugal for free!

#16 Sit in Solitude at Praca do Campo Novo Square

Praca Mouzinho de Albuquerque, Braga, Portugal

Campo Novo Square – also called Praca Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square – is one of the Braga hidden gems. It sits just north of the busy Av. Central and visitors who seek it out often find solitude and gorgeous flowers in the pretty square.

Established in 1725, Praca do Campo Novo features ornamental flower beds – along with an elaborate fountain and staircase. Behind the stairs is the 19th century Palacete dos Condes de Carcavelos.

#17 Appreciate the Unusual Capela de Guadalupe

Exterior of Capela de Guadalupe, Braga, Portugal

Sitting atop Santa Margarida Hill, Capela de Guadalupe is one of the lesser visited Braga sights. The church, which features an unusual circular design, was built in 1725 and is now considered a Cultural Heritage Monument.

While not as generously decorated as other churches in Braga, its uniqueness makes it worth seeking out.

#18 Soak in the Beauty of Jardim da Senhora a Branca

Walk in Jardim da Senhora a Branca, Braga, Portugal

Situated at the east end of Avenida Central Gardens and surrounded by picturesque architecture is the splendid Jardim da Senhora a Branca. The small triangular garden hosts rose bushes, orange trees, flower beds, arched trellises and a monumental cross.

Taking a moment in the garden to savor the scents and scenery is one of the relaxing things to do in Braga.

#19 Browse the Books at Livraria Centesima Pagina

Books at Livraria Centesima Pagina, Braga, Portugal

Browsing the books at Livraria 100 Pagina is one of the pleasant things to do in Braga City Center. The independently owned bookshop, which is housed in a historic dwelling, sells everything from classic novels to children’s books to locally made artworks and souvenirs.

Guests are invited to sit and read – or enjoy cake and coffee in the café in the back.

#20 View the Basilica dos Congregados

Exterior view of Basilica dos Congregados, Braga, Portugal

The Basilica dos Congregados is an exceptional Braga sight – and visiting is one of the free Braga things to do.

Built in the 18th century (although not completely finished until the 1960s), the church is fine example of the luxuriant Baroque architectural style. Featuring double bell towers, ornately carved statues and glittering alters, the Basilica dos Congregados is impossible to ignore!

#21 Buy Cheese at an Old-Fashioned Cheese Store

Queijaria Central Cheese Shop, Braga, Portugal

When visiting Braga in Portugal, don’t miss Queijaria Central – a specialty cheese monger that opened in 1952. The old-fashioned shop sells regional goods, classic candies, Fidalguinhos cookies and fresh baked pastries – but their signature product is the local cheese, Serra da Estrela.

#22 Join the Shoppers on Avenida da Liberdade

People on Avenida da Liberdade, Braga, Portugal

The absolute best street for shopping in Braga, Portugal is Avenida da Liberdade. The wide, pedestrian-only thoroughfare is home to name brand stores and shops selling the latest fashions.

That said, the area is not only for shopping, but also for strolling. The lane is lined with an array of interesting architecture, including the Art Deco Teatro Circo.

#23 Stand in Awe of Palacio do Raio

Entrance to Palacio do Raio, Braga, Portugal

The blue tiled façade of Palacio do Raio is a must-see in Braga, Portugal. The grandiose palace was built in the 18th century for a wealthy Braga merchant – and the exterior Baroque ornamentation is simply exquisite.

Since 2015, the palace has housed a museum with exhibits pertaining to religion and the history of Braga. There is a small fee to enter.

#24 Snap a Photo by the Braga Sign

Famous Braga Sign, Braga, Portugal

Snapping a photo with the large letters spelling out the city’s name is one of the fun things to do in Braga!

The letters stand in front of the 17th century Fountain of Largo Carlos Amarante. In the background of the sign is the stately Hospital de Sao Marcos. Dating to 1508 and drastically enhanced over the years, the building functioned as a hospital from its inception all the way up to 2011.

#25 Gaze at the Gilded Igreja de Santa Cruz

View of Igreja de Santa Cruz, Braga, Portugal

Hailed as one of the most beautiful attractions in Braga, Igreja de Santa Cruz (or the Holy Cross Church) is magnificent – both inside and out.

Built in the 17th century, the façade features Doric columns and majestic carvings. Inside, gold detailing emphasizes the carvings – especially on the organ and altar. A small fee is required to enter.

#26 Stare Up at the Tower of Santiago

Arco de Santiago, Tower of Santiago, Braga, Portugal

The Medieval Santiago Tower stands as part of the original 14th century defensive system; it served as both a watchtower and a Braga city gate.

Now part of the Pius XII Museum, the tower allows visitors to immerse themselves in the history of Braga by climbing up the five-story keep. On the third floor is the Nossa Senhora da Torre Chapel, which was built by famous Braga architect, Andre Soares, to show gratitude for sparing the city from Portugal’s massive earthquake in 1755. At the top, visitors can see the 18th century bells and enjoy the view.

#27 Sip a Local Libation at the Best Bars in Braga

Pint of Beer, Letraria Craft Beer Library, Braga, Portugal

Northern Portugal is a well-known wine region – and those who want to get a taste of locally produced wine in Braga will have no trouble finding a bar, café or restaurant to imbibe. That said, we do recommend tasting Vinho Verde. The name translates to Green Wine – which refers to the fact that the wine is consumed ‘young’ (not the color!).

Craft beer is also pouring in Braga. One of the top producers of Portuguese craft beer, Cerveja Letra, hails from Vila Verde, just to the north. The best bars in Braga, Portugal to get a taste are Letraria Craft Beer Library (a city center taproom of Letra Brewery) and Mal Amado (where they pour craft brew from several Portuguese brewers).

Visitors looking for Braga bars serving excellent cocktails should check out SETRA or Tosga.

#28 Eat at a Local Braga Restaurant

Madeira Style Burger, Bira dos Namorados, Braga, Portugal

There are numerous restaurants in Braga that will appeal to a variety of tastes – so we are just highlighting a few of the eateries that were recommended to us by locals.

Cozinha da Se Restaurant Braga

One of the best restaurants in Braga for regional cuisine, Cozinha da Se serves big portions of meaty favorites and fish specialties (the cod dishes get rave reviews!). Diners can enjoy the meal inside the cozy restaurant or al fresco.

Bira dos Namorados

Featuring a bright and colorful interior, Bira dos Namorados offers a diverse menu of international fare infused with local flavor. The burgers on traditional Madeira bread (one of our favorite Madeira Foods ) hit the spot!

Retrokitchen Braga

Earning high marks for offering homestyle meals at affordable prices, the Retrokitchen menu (a 3-course offering at a flat rate) changes daily. Retrokitchen consistently gets high marks for being one of the best restaurants in Braga.

We have outlined the best things to see in and around Braga, Portugal – but we have a few more tips to help make your trip enjoyable.

The Porto to Braga distance is about 35 miles – and you can choose a car, train or bus to make the journey. In our opinion, the train is the best mode of transport for getting to Braga from Porto.

The Urbano (U) is a Porto to Braga train that departs from Sao Bento Station in Porto City Center. The ride takes about 1.5 hours and costs less than 5 euros. Faster and more expensive trains depart from Campanha Station, which is east of the Porto center.

Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

No matter where you're going or how often you travel, luggage can make or break your trip. It helps with planning, packing, and staying organized while away — and sometimes determines whether you can bring back souvenirs. There's a wide range of checked suitcases, carry-on bags, duffels, weekenders, underseat bags, and backpacks on the market. Beyond that, you've got hardside and softside options with various organizational features. Amid what you might call the Golden Age of luggage, it can be hard to sift through your offerings.

To figure out what brands stand out from the rest, our Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage ranging from carry-ons and checked suitcases to duffels, weekenders, garment bags, and other types of travel bags — assessing capacity, maneuverability, durability, and design through a series of tests and simulations. We've rolled suitcases through obstacle courses, threw them off tables, and hit them with baseball bats to see how well they'd perform in different travel scenarios like rough baggage handlers. We even recreated an airplane set in our New York City lab to lift bags into real overhead bins and underneath seats. We continue testing each bag in our real-life travels for a minimum of six months to make sure it stands up to planes, trains, automobiles, and anything else life may throw at it.

Our team has tested bags from many different brands, and below you'll find our current favorites. We will continue to update this article as we test even more luggage brands and new bags.

Best Overall

Backed by a 10-year warranty, Samsonite luggage is compact yet spacious, easy to maneuver, and exceptionally durable.

Because Samsonite has such a wide variety of designs and price points, some bags perform better than others.

After our most recent set of luggage tests, Samsonite has risen to the top as our favorite overall luggage brand. Samsonite luggage is generally lightweight and compact on the outside, with spacious interiors to maximize packing and a variety of styles to choose from. We especially love the brand for its versatility, with an impressive variety of bags at different price points so you can find whatever suits you whether you're looking for something affordable or luxurious.

The Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable Carry-on holds the spot as the best overall carry-on we've ever tested, while the Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside takes the cake as our favorite checked suitcase . The Samsonite Bartlett Carry-on Softside Spinner earned perfect scores during our tests, impressing us as a solid softside suitcase for under $100. We also loved the organizational features — including multiple tech sleeves and included packing cubes — of the Samsonite Just Right Carry-on Spinner .

Almost all of the suitcases sustained hardly any damage after we hit them with a baseball bat and shoved them off a table. Samsonite luggage also maneuvers without a fuss, even on carpeted floors and gravel. Prices are more than reasonable, and while you'll have to make any returns within 30 days, the brand backs its products with a 10-year warranty.

Best Overall, Runner-up

The suitcases are durable, smooth-rolling, and spacious, and the brand has a generous 100-day return policy.

Some are harder to pull on two wheels, and the checked models are a bit heavy.

All Travelpro luggage we tested earned high scores for maneuverability, durability, capacity, and overall design. The brand's hardside and softside models were a hit in the T+L lab, and there are both carry-on and checked options with spacious interiors and expandable capacities. We also appreciated the various organizational features, like zipper panels, cross straps, and pockets.

With self-aligning spinner wheels and sturdy telescoping handles, Travelpro luggage is also easy to maneuver on hard floors, carpet, and even gravel (though some suitcases are slightly harder to roll on two wheels than four, especially when packed full). We particularly love the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Expandable Hardside Spinner with its sleek wheels and a textured handle that helps maintain a comfortable grip, and we think the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Large Check-In Trunk Spinner makes a stylish investment piece if you're looking for something large, durable, and built to last. Even Travelpro's rolling garment bag impressed with its high capacity for the size. And, while the carry-ons are generally lightweight, one thing to note is that the larger checked models weigh almost twice as much when empty.

After shoving the suitcases off a table and whacking them with a baseball bat, we were pleasantly surprised by their durability. We only noticed a couple superficial marks — no scratches or dents, and nothing that wouldn't wipe clean. Travelpro offers a generous 100-day return policy and backs its luggage with warranties ranging from 10 years to a lifetime, though it can be difficult to connect with their customer service department to initiate returns or repair requests at times.

Best for Staying Organized

Away Travel

Beyond aesthetic appeal, Away flaunts plenty of pockets and compartments that keep all of your items in place.

The hardside suitcases might scratch under heavy use.

Away luggage has a minimalist-modern aesthetic and a sophisticated yet practical appeal. We're huge fans of the brand's suitcases and weekenders and particularly love The Everywhere Bag that's perfect for overnight trips, quick weekend adventures, and use as a personal item on longer trips. The checked baggage and hardside carry-on luggage pieces are light yet durable and easy to wipe clean. They didn't sustain any dents from our baseball bat tests, but there were a few scratches after we shoved them off a table. There are so many sizes to choose from, including one of our favorite trunks we've ever tested. We liked the dual main compartments, compression systems, expanders, and dirty laundry satchels of the roller bags.

The suitcases were a breeze to maneuver on their 360-degree spinner wheels, and carrying The Everywhere and The Garment Bag was comfortable with the padded shoulder straps. The Garment Bag also has interior padding that keeps all of your longer clothing items protected and helps to minimize wrinkles. Away is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. Considering the 100-day return window, lifetime warranty, and stylish designs, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to pretty much any traveler.

The Details: 100 day return policy | Lifetime warranty

A perfect choice for organized travelers, Paravel luggage has lots of added features and a sophisticated appeal.

The suitcases don't expand, and the lighter colors are prone to scuffing.

Perfect for organized travelers , Paravel takes the cake for additional features. We loved the dual compartments, many pockets, dividers, and removable laundry bags. While the suitcases don't expand, the compression pads make fitting everything a cinch. The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus was one of our top carry-on bags thanks to its sleek design, roomy interior that makes packing a breeze, and slick wheels that were great on every surface. We also love the super cute Paravel Mini Fold-up Backpack that earned perfect scores in every category, as well as our pick as best overall mini backpack . Not only does the bag fold up small so you can pack it in larger bags, but it also has a high capacity that can even fit a tablet, making it the perfect eye-catching style to wear on any vacation.

Most Paravel luggage pieces held up well during our durability tests, though the lighter-colored hardside models are prone to scuffing. The suitcases are also easy to pull, push, and roll over various flooring materials. What's more, Paravel luggage is undeniably stylish with a sophisticated appeal and a cool mid-century flair. Prices are somewhat steep, but in the end, we think it's worth the investment.

People / Jhett Thompson

Most Spacious

Delsey Paris

The brand's large-capacity suitcases are impressively spacious yet lightweight, with built-in expanders and smooth-rolling wheels.

The hardside models are prone to scuffing.

Delsey is a go-to for large-capacity luggage . This brand carries both hardside and softside suitcases, including surprisingly spacious carry-ons and checked baggage in multiple sizes so you can find the best design for your needs. We were thrilled by how much they fit, noting that they could easily pack all items on our packing list with room to spare, even without expansion functions.

The suitcases maneuver well on their four spinner wheels, even over carpet, cracks, and bumps. Most models are also lightweight, so lifting them into an overhead bin is no problem. We checked the Chatelet Air 2.0 Carry-on and matching Chatelet Air 2.0 Medium Checked bag on four different long-haul international flights and each time they made it to the luggage carousel with only minor scuffs that were easily wiped away. We appreciate Delsey's accessible price points, plus the brand backs its luggage with warranties ranging from five to 10 years.

The Details: 30 day return policy | 5-to-10-year warranty

Travel + Leisure / Tamara Staples

Best Colors

They come in both neutrals and so many colorful designs, including limited-edition options.

Some of the carry-ons are on the smaller size.

You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store with all of the colorful suitcase options from July — and if you tend to gravitate toward neutrals, July has those, too. After we tested over a dozen bags in our lab on on our airplane set, some of our favorites included the July Carry On (includes a portable charger), the July Checked Plus (the largest suitcase in July’s range), the July Checked Plus Light (a great lightweight option), and the July Trunk Set (a stylish, zipperless two-piece set).

We found the bags to be very durable against our baseball bat tests, although we noticed that the bags with aluminum corner bumpers tended to scuff more easily specifically on the corners. One of our favorite features was that some bags, including the Carry On Pro SnapSleeve , feature a multi-stop telescopic handle that you can adjust to 20 different heights, when many suitcase handles only stop at three heights.

Different bag styles are available in different colorways, and you can choose from delightful shades of blues, greens, pinks, reds, shadow lavender, plum, yellow, sand, and more, most of which will easily stand out on any baggage carousel. We did notice that some of the carry-ons tend to be much more spacious than others, so be sure to check the dimensions to find a size that will fit everything you need.

The Details: 100 day return policy | Limited lifetime warranty on luggage; 5-year warranty on soft bags and accessories; 2-year warranty on small leather goods

Best for Smaller Bags

Calpak luggage is compact yet still spacious enough to hold the essentials, and maneuvering it is a piece of cake.

The two-year warranty is substantially shorter than most other brands.

If you're looking for something you can stash in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, Calpak might be your best bet. We loved the duffles, backpacks, and suitcases with a particular appreciation for the Hue Mini Carry-on Luggage , our best overall underseat bag . We love that it glides smoothly, has a sturdy exterior, and can even fit a laptop, making it perfect for weekend getaways or even business trips.

Even when packed full, we found each Calpak suitcase to roll beautifully on both two wheels and four. We also like the Compakt Small Garment Bag , which is perfect to transport of one or two formal pieces inside a carry-on suitcase. The Stevyn Duffel Bag was very comfortable to tote with its shoulder strap and features a separate shoe compartment to keep your items clean if you're in the market for something smaller. Though the two-year warranty is shorter than most other brands, we think Calpak's prices are more than fair.

The Details: 30 day return policy | 2-year warranty

Travel + Leisure / Conor Ralph

Best Budget

Amazon basics.

Amazon's luggage is not just budget-friendly but also lightweight and sturdy with unexpectedly large capacities.

Color options are limited, and the suitcases don't have USB ports or other smart features.

We can confidently tell you there's much more to love about Amazon Basics luggage than a budget-friendly price tag. The Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner also landed on our list of the best lightweight luggage after earning a perfect score in all categories. We especially love that even though it is a light suitcase, it's sturdy with wheels that easily maneuver over gravel and carpeting. More pockets would have been appreciated, but both the carry-on and checked models easily fit everything on our packing list without the expanders, which adds another 15 percent to the capacity.

The hardside suitcases have extra-thick thermoplastic shells that passed our durability tests with flying colors — no scratches or dents in sight. They were generally easy to maneuver, too, albeit a little more difficult on gravel. Color options are limited, and while most Amazon Basics carriers don't have TSA locks or smart features, the designs exceeded our expectations.

Best Splurge

This splurge-worthy luggage brand boasts expandable main compartments, ample pockets, impact-resistant exteriors, and smooth spinner wheels.

The price might be hard to justify, and the checked bags are somewhat heavy when empty.

If you want the crème de la crème of luggage, Tumi is where it's at . The suitcases and underseat bags fared better than the duffel we tested, but all in all, we were impressed. Our favorite by far is the Alpha International Expandable 4-wheeled Carry-on that looks compact but includes plenty of organizational compartments and even comes with its own removable garment bag. There was plenty of space to pack everything on our list in every Tumi bag, even without the expanders. This brand also stands out for its organizational, smart, and security features. We're talking ample pockets, removable garment bags, laptop sleeves, USB ports, lockable zippers, and TSA-approved locks.

Whether you go softside or hardside, you can count on reliable durability — we even jumped on the bags and rode on top of them and not one feature broke or dented. We observed virtually no scuffs or scratches after whacking the bags with a baseball bat. Tumi luggage is easy to maneuver, thanks to the spinner wheels, but bear in mind the checked sizes are pretty heavy when empty. If you can swing the steep price, we think the brand is an excellent choice for long trips, frequent fliers , and those who like to stay organized.

Most Durable

Briggs & riley.

Briggs & Riley

With ballistic nylon or shock-absorbing polycarbonate exteriors, Briggs & Riley suitcases can really take a beating.

This is one of the more expensive brands, and the checked models are slightly heavy when empty.

The most durable luggage we tested comes from Briggs & Riley . The brand carries softside suitcases with ballistic nylon exteriors that resist premature wear and tear, as well as hardside models like the Sympatico Domestic Carry-on Expandable Spinner with shock-absorbing polycarbonate shells that promise to protect your cargo from getting crushed. We were impressed by how well they stood up to our shoves and bat swings — no dents or scratches to speak of.

Durability aside, Briggs & Riley suitcases roll effortlessly on hard floors and carpet, over bumps, and around tight corners. They also have decent capacities, many with built-in expanders. This is one of the more expensive luggage brands, but it's backed by a lifetime guarantee. We wouldn't be surprised if the suitcases last 10 or more years. Not only that, but there are a few options for remedying potential damage, including self-repair kits, authorized repair centers, or shipping back to Briggs & Riley for a tune-up.

Best Design

Thoughtfully designed, each Béis bag we tried comes with extra, often removable, features so you can customize your packing.

These are large bags and we had a hard time fitting some weekenders under airplane seats.

Shay Mitchell's luggage brand quickly won our hearts with each bag's thoughtful design, customizable inserts, and removable compartments. The bags are certainly large and can fit everything you need for a long vacation or quick weekend getaway — just be mindful that not all of the duffel-style bags will work as personal items. The Weekender is one of our favorites: like Mary Poppins' bag of wonders, this tote seems to expand as you pack it, fitting every item on our list.

When it comes to rolling bags, the 29-inch Large Check-in Roller is our best checked bag for organization . Similar to its weekenders, carry-on bags, and backpacks, Béis' check-in bag is huge and can fit everything you need and more. All of the Béis suitcases we tested also sported durable wheels that smoothly navigated different types of surfaces without gettings tuck, as well as easy-to-use handles that make running through the airport a breeze.

Other Luggage Brands We Liked

Even though these brands did not make our main list, they still have some worthwhile suitcases and bags to consider.

Monos :  Monos items have a nice, sleek look that are generally easy to maneuver. However, when we tested its large check-in suitcase, we found that it carried less items than some of its competitors.

Arlo Skye :  We love this brand's smooth design and stand-out colors, but considering the higher price-point, these bags don't roll quite as smoothly as some other brands.

Roam : We're big fans of Roam's The Check-in hardside suitcase as well as the designs of other Roam bags; however, after one-month of real-world travels, we found these luggage pieces to be more prone to scratching than other brands we tried.

The T+L team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage, including carry-ons, checked suitcases, duffels, weekenders, garment bags, backpacks, and more in our New York City testing facility. We've tried at least six models from many top-rated brands, performing a range of assessments to evaluate the capacity, maneuverability, durability, design, and overall value. We weighed each bag, then packed it with enough clothes and personal items to get through a four-day trip (more for the larger checked bags).

To see how the luggage would perform in a real-life environment, we rolled them on different flooring materials, across gravel and carpets, over bumps, and around corners. We also threw each piece off a table and whacked it a few times with a metal baseball bat to test for potential wear and tear and how prone it was to scratching or denting. In addition, we recreated an airplane set in our lab, where we hoisted the carry-on suitcases into real overhead bins and stuffed them underneath seats to see how easy they were to lift and how portable they felt.

After lab testing, each suitcase and bag was sent out for real-world testing, and our T+L editors brought the bags on vacations, weekend trips, and overnighters. To test each bag's true durability, convenience, and longevity, we tested each bag on planes, trains, buses, and even cruise ships, checking in after one month, three months, and six months to give our feedback. Considering standout features, size, and price, we created categorized ranked lists of every luggage piece we tested. The luggage brands with the highest average ratings were ultimately chosen for this list of our favorites, which we will continue to update as we test eve more luggage.

How We Chose These Brands

The T+L team tested at least six bags per brand on our winners list to ensure a broad sample size. We tested underseat luggage , checked luggage, and carry-on luggage as well as duffel bags, garment bags, and backpacks, and gave each individual bag a score based on its capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and overall value.

Next, we created rankings based on the total average scores of all the bags we tested for that brand. We also thoroughly read through all of the tester insights on each luggage item from these three tests to evaluate each bag's details and features. Finally, we determined whether or not we would recommend a bag and its overall brand.

Tips for Buying Luggage

Get to know the brand.

When it comes to researching a new luggage brand, you're already well on your way. For more information on a specific brand, you can check out its website, read customer reviews on products you like, or even take a peek at the items in person. Buying new luggage (whether a singular piece or luggage set ) can be a pricey investment, so be sure you like a brand's style, warranty options, and overall quality before you make that purchase. This is especially important when it comes to splurging on luxury luggage pieces .

Know your organizational preferences

Material and size are important, but some of the best luggage brands stand out for their organizational features. This may include dual main compartments, various pockets, a shoe separator, zippered sections, a toiletry bag , a removable laundry bag, a garment bag, a laptop sleeve, and maybe even a USB port with a power bank pouch — some Arlo Skye luggage includes the power bank itself. While it's not a top priority for all travelers, this can make packing and accessing your belongings much easier.

Look for durability

The best luggage stands up to wear and tear for several years to come. Both softside and hardside luggage options can be very durable. It's really a matter of whether you want to safeguard your packed items from getting crushed or protect the exterior of the suitcase from superficial blemishes (though many softside and hardside models we tested check all the boxes).

Think about mobility

You should also think about maneuverability. When you're running into the airport to check your bags before heading to security, you'll want a suitcase that doesn't hold you back. Four-wheel spinner suitcases tend to be easier to pull and push over different surfaces compared to suitcases with just two wheels, and they're even better if they have a sturdy telescoping handle. Grab handles and padded straps are ideal for other types of luggage, and a lightweight design will make your travel experience much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

You'll see a range of hardside and softside models when browsing luggage, and many of the best brands offer both. What you purchase really comes down to personal preference. Some people appreciate how crush-resistant hardside suitcases protect their belongings. They're also easy to wipe clean and have a sleek, modern appearance.

On the other hand, softside suitcases are typically (but not always) lighter in weight and more flexible, so you can often pack more in them. After testing both types, we can tell you they're often just as durable as hardside options, and they won't dent like hardside bags do. Although a textile exterior might be trickier to clean, it can be better at concealing scuffs and dirt. Regardless of the type of luggage, you can find several effective products to clean suitcases available.

Size limits for carry-on luggage vary among airlines . That said, most allow suitcases no larger than 24 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Some are a little more strict, with limits set around 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Keep this in mind if your suitcase has an expander, as the additional inch or two could put it over the allowed size limit. We recommend checking the airline's website if you're not sure whether your luggage will pass as a carry-on.

Going on vacation these are the best travel essentials for apple devices.

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

It’s vacation season, and whether you’re heading out of town for some much-needed rest, or just traveling for work as usual, the accessories you travel with can make a world of difference.

Here are the best travel essentials for Apple devices.

Connect to plane’s TV with AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones

AirFly SE from Twelve South

For as wonderful as Bluetooth headphones can be, the one place they can disappoint is when you want to watch something on an airplane. In-flight TVs typically require using a standard 3.5mm headphone jack to connect.

That’s where the AirFly SE audio transmitter comes in. AirFly plugs into a standard headphone jack and creates a wireless signal that enables your AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones to connect to the TV. It feels a bit like magic.

Keep your battery charged on the go

Chargers for iPhone and Apple Watch

Apple no longer makes its iPhone MagSafe Battery, but there’s a much more affordable alternative anyways. Anker’s MagSafe portable iPhone charger attaches magnetically to your iPhone to provide charge on the go. It comes in a variety of great colors, and can be recharged using USB-C.

If you need a lot more charging juice, this portable power bank packs a whopping 26800mah of capacity. It’s a lot of power that can charge a variety of devices, while still being TSA-safe for taking on the plane with you.

Finally, if you’re looking for a convenient Apple Watch charging solution, this keychain Watch charger is the way to go. Snap it on your keychain and charge up as needed throughout the day, then recharge it via USB-C.

Reduce packing clutter

3-in-1 charger and laptop sleeve

My favorite 3-in-1 charger for my iPhone, Watch, and AirPods just happens to be perfect for travel, too. Rather than dealing with a lot of different charging bricks and cables, this 3-in-1 solution uses a single cable and brick, and can be easily collapsed for taking up minimal space in your bag.

  • Hands-on: I finally found the 3-in-1 iPhone charger I’ve been looking for

Another great way to upgrade your packing game, while better protecting your Mac or iPad, is to use a sleeve. I recommend this sleeve for Mac or this one for iPad . It keeps your bag organized, your device safe, and can be taken out for on-the-go outings.

Block out airplane noise

Sonos Ace

There is no shortage of solid noise-canceling headphones out there. I’m partial to the AirPods Pro 2 , but over-ears will better physically isolate external sounds. You can’t go wrong with any of the following options, ranked from least to most pricey:

  • Bose QuietComfort
  • AirPods Max

Don’t let your bags get lost

AirTag

It may go without saying, but a list of travel essentials would be incomplete without the AirTag. Throw one in every bag, on your keys, on any valuable item you’re bringing with you—that way, if something happens you’re not out of luck. You can get a discounted 4-pack or just buy one .

The right crossbody allows you to carry your essentials hands-free while you’re hauling ass through airport security at 5 A.M. or putting in miles during a day of sightseeing. Of course, you might also need something to carry to dinner or on a spontaneous date with some accented stranger (a girl can dream!). The moral of the story is you need a bag that can do it all —and one that works for you in every way. So, whether you’re jetting off on an international adventure or gearing up for a summer vacation , shop the 14 best crossbody bags for travel, ahead.

If you prefer to shop designer, more power to you. For travel-friendly options, look for styles that close securely and transition well from day to night.

Customer review: “This is a gorgeous bag, and the leather is so dreamy *but* you will be forced to pick and choose what you want to carry as the interior is quite small. I’m able to fit my iPhone pro, small wallet, lip balm and car key…and that’s pretty much it. But the look is worth it!”

While we love cameras, camera bags are usually ugly, point blank. You’re not paparazzi, and although you are a traveler, you wouldn’t want anyone to think of you as a tourist , right? This fashionable find from Isabel Marant is the solution.

Dimensions: Height: 5.25 inches; width: 3 inches; length: 7.25 inches

Material: Leather, silver, textile

Colors: Black

If style is your top priority, here’s an option that will match with quite literally anything you wear. The concession is that you might not be able to squeeze that telescopic camera lens inside it, but there’s more than enough room for airplane snacks.

How to Shop for Travel-Friendly Crossbody Bags

elle line break

  • Look for bags that close securely. Zippered or lock closure tops are best. Snaps and magnets come in second, and open tops offer the least protection against theft.
  • Before purchasing, make sure a bag will hold all of your necessities. If you’re a seasoned traveler, you likely know which items you like to keep on your throughout your days. But if not, give it some thought. Will you want to keep your passport on your person, or are you comfortable using the hotel safe? Do you carry an inhaler or EpiPen? Is your wallet large, or do you have a sleek card holder? Think these things over and be sure your new bag will hold everything you want it to. Often, it’s better to go slightly larger than you might initially think you need. Size up.
  • Ideally, the bag will feel comfortable to wear and will have a thick, perhaps even padded, strap. It’s also preferable for straps to be adjustable.
  • The more organizational features, the better.
  • A bag that can be worn in multiple ways or has a versatile style is best if you want to pack light. Some bags won’t transition well to a fancy dinner or night out. If you only plan to bring one bag, keep this in mind.
  • If you’re more concerned with practicality, you’ll definitely want to look for durable, weather-resistant materials, so you don’t have to worry about getting caught in the rain.

Why Crossbody Bags Are Good for Travelers

linebreak

  • If worn as a true crossbody, it’s not as easy for the bag to slip off your shoulder—or to be snatched—as it is with a tote, shoulder, or handbag. Yet, it still provides that handsfree convenience. The same can be said for backpacks.
  • From a fashion perspective, crossbody bags are easier to dress up than backpacks and are likely to match with more of your outfits.

Packing for a long trip can be stressful, especially if you don't have a quality luggage set ready to go. “I think luggage can be a very personal item, and having a bag that makes you feel good and functions well can help ease some of the stressful aspects of traveling,” says Nadine Sykora, a travel content creator who’s visited more than 60 countries.

Luggage sets usually include one carry-on and one checked bag option in a similar color scheme, making it easy to keep track of your bags while you travel—whether you need to retrieve them from a baggage claim or from an overhead compartment.

To help you find the best ones on the market, we spoke to travel experts and NBC Select staffers about their favorite luggage sets and what to look for when shopping.

Beis Luggage Bundle

Beis Luggage Bundle

This luggage bundle from Beis, an NBC Select-staff favorite brand, lets you choose a set of two or three hardside bags, which are available in different colors and sizes. You can choose to mix and match your collection with a carry-on and checked bag, or opt for three checked bags or three carry-on bags. All the options are expandable, stain-resistant and have a useful weight indicator, which keeps you from overpacking your bags, according to the brand. The trolley handle also has a cushioned grip for added comfort and the 360-degree spinner wheels let you drag the bag in any direction easily, according to Beis. The bags also all have TSA approved locks and water-resistant zippers.

Maxlite 5 Breakaway Luggage Set

Maxlite 5 Breakaway Luggage Set

Travel Pro comes highly recommended by Sykora for its soft-shelled suitcases. This set, which is one of the lightest on our list, includes a 21-inch carry-on and 25-inch checked bag, which are each available in five colors. Both bags are expandable up to two inches, have an interior pocket for storage and an adjustable handle that you can modify to accommodate your height. There’s an adjustable zippered pocket on the exterior for any last-minute packing too. Both bags also have spinner wheels and handles that have a rubberized contoured grip for easy maneuvering. The exterior is also made from a polyester fabric, which is water- and stain-resistant for durability, according to the brand.

Material : Polyester | Weight : carry-on: 5.4 pounds, checked: 7.3 pounds | Warranty : Lifetime limited warranty

July Trunk Set

July Trunk Set

This highly rated trunk set (which you can personalize) comes with two bags — a carry-on bag and a checked trunk. There are two integrated TSA locks, an included nylon stain-proof laundry bag and 360 spinner double-wheels for maneuverability. The interior is laid out in an 80/20 split, with the deeper side built to hold bulky items like heavy coats while the other side is shallow to hold any personal items or jewelry, according to the brand. There are also compression straps on the inside of both bags to hold your clothes in place during long-haul flights. July has an extended line of backpacks or totes too if you’re looking to add to your set.

Material : Polycarbonate shell | Weight : carry-on: 8.4 pounds, checked: 13.2 pounds | Warranty : Lifetime

Paravel Grand Tour Set Plus

Paravel Grand Tour Set Plus

This luggage set, which is available in five colors, comes with a canvas duffle and a carry-on that is made from recycled polycarbonate, recycled aluminum, and recycled vegan leather. The duffel can fit a week’s worth of clothing, and has a lockable zipper, and two interior and exterior zipped pockets, according to the brand. Inside the carry-on, you'll find a removable laundry bag to keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean ones, and interior slots to keep your lingerie or any personal items safe and secure. The interior also has a nylon lining, which is water-resistant, so minor spills from your cosmetics shouldn't damage it, according to the brand. You can also engrave it with your initials or an emoji starting at $65.

Material : A recycled blend of polycarbonate, aluminum and leather | Weight : carry-on: 8.5 pounds, checked: 11.8 pounds | Warranty : 10-year limited warranty

Calpak Ambeur 3-Piece Luggage Set

Calpak Ambeur 3-Piece Luggage Set

Calpak is a favorite of NBC Select editorial director, Lauren Swanson, for its durability. She has used the carry-on from this set for close to five years without any issues. “It's easy to wheel around the airport and the double zipper almost has a vacuum seal effect on your clothes — I have stuffed so much in it and it (fingers crossed) always fits,” she says. This hardside option is one of the only three-piece luggage sets we’re recommending and it comes with one carry-on , one medium bag and one large bag to check. Similar to other options on our list, these bags have 2-inch expandability, a TSA-approved combination lock and dual spinner wheels.

Material : Polycarbonate & ABS | Weight : 6 lbs | Medium : 8.6 lbs | Large : 10.3 lbs | Warranty : 2-year limited warranty

Samsonite Freeform 2 Piece Set

Samsonite Freeform 2 Piece Set

This Samsonite hardside set comes with one carry-on and one checked luggage spinner and is a favorite of NBC Select updates editor, Mili Godio . “These suitcases are so sturdy — I never feel like my items are going to break or arrive in bad condition when I fly,” she says. Both suitcases have a TSA-approved combination lock, a built-in ID tag and a retractable handle. Godio also praised the spinner wheels as they make it easy to lug the bags around the airport. Both bags are also expandable and have interior pockets to help separate your belongings.

Material : Polycarbonate | Weight : carry-on: 6.5 lbs, checked: 9.59 lbs | Warranty : 2-year limited warranty

How to shop for the best luggage sets.

If you're in the market for a luggage set, here’s what our experts recommended keep in mind while shopping:

Materials : Look for polycarbonate hard shell suitcases for durability, according to Sykora. “I can't tell you how many bags have cracked on me due to poor baggage handling,” she says. “I typically prefer hard-case luggage because I feel that my items are more protected from handling.” If you have to buy a soft-shelled suitcase, buy one with a nylon build as they’re usually scratch- and water-resistant, according to Sykora.

Wheels : Your best bet is to buy a bag with spinner wheels that rotate in any direction. They should turn, glide and pivot with ease, according to Sykora.

Zippers : A good sturdy zipper is crucial, according to Maggie Espinosa , a travel blogger and writer. “No one wants their luggage zipper to break when traveling,” she says. Water-resistant zippers and metal zippers are especially useful for this purpose, according to Espinosa. “In my experience metal zippers tend to hold shut better than many plastic zippers,” she says.

Weight and Size : We included luggage sets of different weights and sizes with each bag weighing less than 15 pounds. Weight limitations on carry-on and checked bags will vary depending on the airline, so make sure to check before you head to the airport.

Cap Ferret European Best Destinations 2024

11. Lège-Cap-Ferret, Nouvelle Aquitaine, France

Lège-Cap-Ferret is like a Proust madeleine reminiscent of real holidays. Simplicity, sharing, an open-air market, an impromptu concert, new friends met during a bike ride, an aperitif on the beach , this is the South-West and its legendary conviviality .

Leave your tourist rental or hotel and take a walk or bike ride. Join the nearby café, visit the lighthouse and admire the Pilat dune, the largest dune in Europe. Taste oysters in the neighbouring oyster village or take a short sea trip with an oyster farmer.

Here everything has the great taste of summer holidays , from the freshness of fish to mouth-watering ice cream or the white wine accompanying your seafood. Here there are no shopping centres, just a small boulevard lined with fashion boutiques with their pretty dresses and linen shirts to bring home as souvenirs of an unforgettable holiday in the South-West of France.

The Arcachon Bay is a jewel of European tourism once prized by the nobility for the quality of its pure air (sea air and pine air combined). The Arcachon basin offers an incredible architectural heritage and beautiful villas in different architectural styles. The most recent constructions truly embrace nature and give this magical place the appearance of a Robinson Crusoe island , with added comfort and conviviality.

Cap-Ferret, a destination which the French would prefer to keep to themselves, is not yet well known to the international traveller; you can only be seduced by this lifestyle combining simplicity, good food and conviviality.

For holidays with family, couples or friends, where true luxury is time, nature and horizons, book your flights to Bordeaux (1h by car), your accommodation in Cap Ferret or Arcachon , as well as your activities and tours , such as a " Cap-Ferret with Oysters Tasting ".

Ponza Italy European Best Destinations 2024

13. Ponza Island - Italy

This small Italian island of a few thousand inhabitants will be your favourite destination this year 2024 .

This Eden, with an area of only 7km2, is located off the coasts of Rome and Naples and was until recently a well- kept secret by the richest Italian families.

Ponza, for the oldest among us, will remind us of Saint Tropez in the 60s and 70s with its festive atmosphere, simplicity, colour, meetings, cocktails, designer boutiques, coves and beaches.

The best way to enjoy the island is to rent a boat or take a water taxi and discover the most beautiful coves and beaches of Ponza but also its caves and natural pools such as the natural pool of Cala Feola to the West of Ponza. Do you like the views? You will enjoy superb panoramas from the top of the cliffs of Ponza such as the Maria Rosa Cliffs.

Come and taste the fish of the day at “Da Enzo al Frontone” also nicknamed “Solo a Vela” because this restaurant is only accessible by boat from the port. Finally, don't forget that you are in Italy, it would be sacrilege not to end your meal with an Italian ice cream . The Bar Gelateria Panoramica is located in the port of Ponza and it is one of the best ice cream parlours on the island:  its strawberry sorbet is a delight!

Ponza is magical at any time of the year but if you can take your holiday in September (until mid-October) it is certainly the best time of the year to discover Ponza.

Book your flights to Rome, your accommodation in Ponza as well as your activities & tours , such as a " From Rome: Ponza Island Day Trip with Boat Excursion ".

Imagine a destination with a 16th century Genoese citadel, a great marina, a few yachts and fishing boats, shops, bars, restaurants…  You will find some of the most beautiful beaches in France like Santa Giulia and its crystal-clear waters and fine white sand, or even Palombaggia and its umbrella pines to rest in the shade under their sweet scent.

In Porto-Vecchio you have the charm of an old Croatian or Montenegrin town with the beauty of a Tahitian lagoon a few kilometres away. You will discover the Corsican identity, which is neither France, nor Italy, nor a mixture of the two, but a uniquely Corsican feel to be appreciated with humility and respect just as the Corsicans do.

Porto-Vecchio is the promise of an unforgettable gastronomic, cultural and visual experience . Are you stiff from too much lazing at the beach? Meet the winegrowers, the women and men who cultivate the land to give you wines of character. Too much sun? An autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Faroes are an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean to put at the top of your travel wish-list in 2024 .

Formerly the private turf of a few travellers passionate about ornithology or hiking, the Faroes today attract travellers looking for authenticity, preserved nature , spectacular landscapes, sometimes dramatic, steep cliffs populated by thousands of sea birds or from which spring fountains flow into the sea.

Today very well connected by road tunnel, ferry, bridge and roads, you will not miss anything of the Faroes during your stay in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Still having trouble figuring out where this archipelago is located? Let's say between the tip of Scotland and Iceland to keep it simple. This gives you an idea of the climate. If you like extreme conditions, come in winter, otherwise come in spring or summer. The Faroes can be summed up in a slogan "Discover the islands, discover yourself".

Piran is probably the most beautiful little town in Europe and in any case the most photogenic destination in Europe. Piran is located in Istria, a region renowned for its vineyards, its gastronomy close to Italian gastronomy (oh these truffles!) and also for the beauty of its crystal-clear waters and nature.

Piran is, along with Portoroz and Koper, one of the few seaside resorts in Slovenia and probably the most beautiful one. City of love , Piran will seduce you with its narrow town streets, the beauty of its facades and the picture sights of the Slovenian Mediterranean.

This medieval city has it all:  dive into the underwater world with your family or discover that the stars are also visible in broad daylight at the wonderful Pira aquarium.

Take an E-Bike to discover the Slovenian Coast on a tour that combines local cuisine and beautiful beaches or try homemade premium extra virgin olive oil in the small village of Marezige. Thassos Greece European Best Destinations 2024

20. Thassos, North Aegean Sea, Greece

We all want to go to Greece but where exactly? Athens or Santorini ? These two destinations are often classified as overtourism destinations where you are more likely to come across another tourist than a local.

Imagine an island with deserted beaches, a little corner of lost paradise that the Greeks prefer to keep for themselves and where you can enjoy delicious mezze for a few euros in typical cafés. Add to that a natural lagoon, Marble Beach which contrasts with the turquoise blue of the water, and a warm welcome from the locals.

There are only very, very good reasons to visit Thassos, one of your best European destinations in 2024 .

Have a few lazy days at the beach, then climb the mountains to meet the inhabitants of Panagia or Kazavati. They will welcome you with open arms.

Thassos is an adventure, don't hesitate to rent a 4x4 to wander through its wild and untouched nature and do not miss anything of this earthly paradise.

Take your flights to Athens, then a domestic flight to Kavala and the ferry to the island. Alternate lazy days with days of discovery in the mountains, restaurants, trendy bars, visits to authentic villages, meeting people and sharing unforgettable moments.

Best for:  Nature lovers, Hikers, Foodies, Families, Beach Lovers, Instagrammers, Sun Seekers.

Best u.s. national parks for 2024.

For more than 100 years, the National Park Service has managed millions of acres solely for the "enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations." Today, 63 designated national parks in the United States draw millions of visitors a year to witness jaw-dropping natural wonders and unforgettable terrains. To determine the best U.S. national parks, U.S. News considered scenic beauty, range of activities and the opinions of both travel experts and recent park visitors. Do you have a favorite park? Cast your vote below to help us determine next year's ranking. (Note: Some of the below destinations require reservations for timed entry. Plan ahead to ensure you can visit on your preferred date.)

Glacier National Park

Yellowstone national park, yosemite national park, grand canyon national park, grand teton national park, zion national park, denali national park and preserve, kenai fjords national park, bryce canyon national park, redwood national and state parks, arches national park, sequoia national park, olympic national park, hawai'i volcanoes national park, mount rainier national park, rocky mountain national park.

best travel bragashopping

Considered one of the world's best places to visit , Glacier National Park spans two mountain ranges and includes more than 700 lakes across Montana. Take advantage of the park's expansive hiking trails, and be sure to hit traveler favorites like the Trail of the Cedars and Iceberg Lake Trail. Other activities include a ride along the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road and a trip to the unique Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Canadian border. What's more, Glacier National Park hosts plenty of free ranger-led activities like guided hikes and stargazing events ideal for visitors of all ages.

best travel bragashopping

Even if Yellowstone didn't hold the incredible distinction of being the world's first national park, the 2.2 million-acre park, which stretches across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, could easily stand on its own for its unique natural attractions and magnificent landscapes . Here, travelers can get lost in the splendor of Yellowstone's many lakes, mountains, bison-filled valleys and, of course, its unmatched hot springs and active geysers (of which the park boasts more than half of the world's supply). To avoid the crowds that often plague Yellowstone while also ensuring excellent weather, plan to visit in April, May or October.

best travel bragashopping

One of California's most-visited national parks, Yosemite National Park stands out for its bevy of impressive waterfalls, such as Vernal Fall and Bridalveil Fall, as well as its unique granite rock formations like Half Dome and El Capitan. There are also ample scenic hiking and camping opportunities; just keep in mind that campsites sell out quickly after becoming available for booking, so make your reservations in advance. Whatever your itinerary may be, make sure to stop by the Tunnel View overlook, which offers showstopping panoramas of Yosemite Valley. What's more, the picturesque lookout spot is relatively easy to access (no hiking is required).

best travel bragashopping

The Grand Canyon is so magnificent that even the highest quality photos don't do the Arizona park's vast beauty justice – you just have to see it in person. The 18-by-277-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site offers endless hiking opportunities with trails of various lengths and degrees of difficulty, as well as the chance to raft the Colorado River. For a slight break from the tourist crowds, head to the less-congested North Rim. And if you're looking for a different vantage point, consider a helicopter tour to learn more about Grand Canyon National Park and see it in all its glory from above.

best travel bragashopping

Jackson Hole's backcountry is a wild wonderland begging to be explored. Once home to ranchers and fur trappers, this Wyoming park now offers more than 250 miles of trails that weave past forests, lakes and the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Grand Teton mountain range. The Cascade Canyon Trail – which takes travelers past waterfalls, glacier-carved canyons and more – shows off the best of Grand Teton National Park's stunning topography. Don't forget to stop by the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center to stock up on maps, check out its informational exhibits and watch the interesting documentary film about the park.

best travel bragashopping

Utah's Zion National Park is a paradise for thrill-seekers. Hike Angels Landing, which brings you up through a nearly 1,500-foot natural staircase (permits are required to hike this popular trail and are awarded through an online lottery system). You can also trek The Narrows, a roughly 10-mile hike through the thinnest section of Zion Canyon, which requires hikers to travel upstream through the Virgin River. For a less strenuous exploration of the park, join a shuttle bus tour to traverse the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, which takes you past many of the park's most famous landmarks.

best travel bragashopping

Spanning six million acres of unspoiled Alaskan wilderness, Denali National Park and Preserve is as vast as it is fascinating. One-sixth of the park is covered in glaciers, and the tallest mountain in North America, Denali, stands within its bounds, towering at 20,310 feet high. The park appeals to true explorers as there isn't an abundance of marked trails. However, free ranger-led trail hikes are available seasonally. Visitors can also watch a sled dog demonstration, go snowmobiling or take a narrated bus tour of the 92-mile Denali Park Road to see scenic landmarks like Savage River and Wonder Lake.

best travel bragashopping

Comprised of glaciers, coastal fjords and icefields, Kenai Fjords National Park transports guests to an age where ice covered large parts of the earth. The Harding Icefield – which was created more than 23,000 years ago – is one of this Alaska park's main features, extending for 700 square miles and viewable via the 8.2-mile Harding Icefield Trail. Visitors can also embark on the Glacier Overlook Trail and Glacier View Loop Trail to catch vistas of Exit Glacier, which flows from the famed icefield. Or, take a kayak or a boat tour to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes from the water.

best travel bragashopping

Hoodoos are odd-shaped pillars of rock left standing from forces of erosion, and Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world. Located in southern Utah, the nearly 36,000-acre park offers an array of hiking opportunities. All trails offer a glimpse of the impressive red rock formations; visitors can also sign up for guided horseback riding tours. While Bryce Canyon is most popular in summer, the park's stark white snow-covered landscape juxtaposed with the orange-red rocks is an unforgettable sight. Winter is also a prime time for activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

best travel bragashopping

As the name suggests, Redwood National and State Parks are best known for their sky-high redwood trees, which typically soar more than 300 feet tall. Along with exploring the old-growth redwood groves, travelers can hike past rivers, through prairies and along 40 miles of Pacific Coast shoreline, spotting wildlife like elk, sea lions and various species of birds as they go. If you can't stay long, scenic drives like Howland Hill Road and Enderts Beach Road showcase park highlights. But for those wanting to sleep under the stars and rise with the sun, there are four developed campgrounds.

best travel bragashopping

Established in 1929 and awarded national park status in 1971, Arches National Park covers nearly 77,000 acres in eastern Utah. Oddly shaped sandstone monuments occupy every view, and the formations make the park an excellent place for backpackers, rock climbers and hikers, not to mention photographers. Visitors will find a whopping 2,000-plus arches in the park – the world's densest concentration of these natural structures. The most popular to see are Landscape Arch, Delicate Arch and Double Arch. Plus, travelers will want to check out the visitor center, which features a wealth of information and exhibits outlining Arches National Park's history, geology and more.

best travel bragashopping

Sequoia National Park is defined by its beautiful, towering sequoia trees – the largest trees in the world. Travelers can hike through this unique California national park to admire its trees, rivers, meadows and wildlife. A visit here is not complete without seeing the Giant Forest's General Sherman Tree, which measures nearly 275 feet tall and more than 36 feet in diameter, making it the world's largest tree by volume. After you ogle the truly impressive evergreens, try some other adventurous activities like rock climbing, horseback riding or fishing.

best travel bragashopping

Among the nearly 1 million acres that make up Olympic National Park, visitors can wander through the enchanting Hoh Rainforest, trek to stunning overlooks and relax on more than 70 miles of Pacific Northwest coastline. One of North America's top hiking destinations , this Washington state gem features top trails like Mount Storm King and the Hall of Mosses. However, you will also want to save time for trying out one of Olympic National Park's other popular activities, which range from canoeing on Lake Crescent to birdwatching on Kalaloch and Ruby Beach.

best travel bragashopping

Visit Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world's most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter almost continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road (although eruption sightings are never guaranteed). While driving along Chain of Craters Road, set aside time to stop at the Kealakomo Overlook. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo.

best travel bragashopping

At 14,410 feet tall, Mount Rainer is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and the tallest volcano in the contiguous United States. Though thousands of travelers tackle the ambitious hike to the mountain's summit each year, it's far more popular to drive to Sunrise, the highest point accessible by vehicle, to soak in 360-degree views of the Cascade Range and Emmons Glacier. Numerous shorter hikes are also available at Mount Rainier National Park, so visitors can explore the temperate rainforests of Carbon River, admire the picturesque wildflower meadows at Paradise or search for the waterfalls in the old-growth forests at Ohanapecosh.

best travel bragashopping

The Rockies earn plenty of points for their convenience. Sitting about 70 miles northwest of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park makes for an easy daytrip. However, you could also spend days exploring this Colorado park. The Rockies' magnificent landscape is one for the books, featuring more than 350 miles of scenic trails, plenty of lakes and numerous mountain peaks taller than 10,000 feet. If you're short on time, Emerald Lake Trail is a popular trek that's less than 5 miles round trip and promises spectacular alpine views. If you'd rather skip the hiking, opt instead for an auto tour of Trail Ridge Road.

Are Tuesdays still the best day to book flights? Here's what major travel platforms found.

  • There’s not a point in choosing a specific day of the week to book your flight as the savings are only marginal, if any.
  • Instead, there are other factors that impact airfare pricing much more.
  • Flying out in the middle of the week instead of the weekend can save travelers an average of 18% on domestic summer airfare.

It’s the age-old question about travel: What is the best day of the week to buy airfare ?

For the longest time, it’s been said that prices surge on the weekends and travelers should wait until Tuesday to book their flights, but how true is that these days?

Now that airfare has become more expensive — flights from major U.S. airports cost 29% more on average this year than in 2021 — knowing the answer could mean the difference between saving some serious dollars.

USA TODAY asked three major travel platforms – Expedia , Hopper and Google Flights – what they found to be the best day for travelers to book flights based on their data.

Here’s what they said.

What is the best day to book flights?

Unfortunately, there’s not a point in choosing a specific day of the week to book your flight as the savings are only marginal, if any, according to Hopper and Google Flights.

An analysis of flight costs initially published in 2022 found that airfare booked on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays has only been 1.9% cheaper than those bought on weekends for the past six years. A Google Flights spokesperson confirmed with USA TODAY that this data holds true as of June 2024.

Instead, there are other factors that impact airfare pricing much more. “While everyone wants a golden rule for the best day of the week to book a flight – the reality is that the best day, and time, to book a flight depends on a number of factors,” said Hayley Berg, Hopper’s lead economist, in an email to USA TODAY.

“We tested this out and looked at the best day of the week to book for a number of popular trips and Tuesday was the cheapest day just 1% of the time,” she said. “The best price might be available on Tuesday – but it might be available on another day of the week.”

However, Expedia did come up with a surprising answer contrary to popular belief: book your flight on the weekend, particularly Sunday, according to its 2024 Air Travel Hacks report published in Sept. 2023.

“Travelers saved an average of 13% compared to those who book on Fridays (the most expensive day),” Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson told USA TODAY in an email. The findings came from “billions of data points” from the Airlines Reporting Corporation and OAG, a data platform for the global travel industry, Hudson added.

Although you can wait until Sunday or avoid Friday to book, other factors are far more important in securing the best deal on your airfare.

Tips to save money on airfare

Berg recommends people monitor flight prices with tools like Hopper or Capital One Travel and aim to book domestic flights between one and three months before departure and international flights between four and five months before departure. “Don’t leave booking too late; prices can increase by hundreds in the final weeks before departure,” she said.

According to Expedia’s report, travelers who purchase their domestic flight 28 days in advance pay 24% less on average than last-minute bookings.

Instead of the day you book impacting costs, it’s the day you fly out that matters to score cheap airfare. Flying out in the middle of the week instead of the weekend can save travelers an average of 18% on domestic summer airfare, Hopper found. For international trips, the savings can be even more – the platform found that flying to Europe this summer on a Tuesday or Wednesday can save $435 per ticket.

Google Flights agrees. On average, flights on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday are 12% cheaper than those on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
