6 drive-through zoos and safaris in florida.

Family trip: Lion Country Safari

By Jill Martin

Sure, there’s plenty of wildlife in Florida, but have you ever viewed a giraffe from the comfort of your car?

You won’t find big screens or bags of popcorn at these drive-ins, but they're action-packed and provide lots of entertainment. Silence your cell phone and enjoy the show at these drive-through zoos in Florida.

1. J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge , Sanibel Island

Sunbathing gators, green herons, white ibis and a crocodile call this four-mile Wildlife Drive home. Roseate spoonbills can be found here year-round.

2. Lion Country Safari , West Palm Beach

Florida’s only drive-through safari boasts 800-plus animals, including wildebeests, rhinos and the world’s largest herd of captive zebras. But the giraffes steal the show at Lion Country Safari.

3. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge , Titusville

Amazing wildlife viewing is easy with the self-guided map that lists numbered stops along Black Point Drive. See gators, otters, turtles and hundreds of bird species, including eagles.

4. St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge , near Tallahassee

Rated five stars by birders, this seven-mile drive through zoo takes you past pinelands and salt marshes to Florida’s second-oldest lighthouse. Look for black bears, turkeys, deer and whooping cranes.

6.  Wild Florida , Kenansville

Features more than 200 animals, including exotics like zebras, sloths, lemurs and Watusi, and a walk-in bird aviary with pheasants, parrots and other birds from all over the world. Also: airboat tours, a drive-through safari park and animal shows.

Lion Country Safari: Drive-thru Zoo with Wildlife, Water Rides, & More in South Florida

With more than 900 animals, a water park, and carnival rides, Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee is a must-see attraction for visitors and locals in south Florida. Located 90 minutes north of Miami (30 minutes outside West Palm Beach ), Lion Country is the kind of place where a family can spend the entire day and still not see everything this park has to offer. Its drive-through wildlife preserve is one of our favorite  drive-through zoo experiences . Visitors can expect to see rhinos, giraffes, and lions up close. And I mean close . Last time my family visited, an ostrich approached our car and started pecking at a parking pass in the window (much to my daughters' delight!)  Even more animals are on display in the park's walk-through zoo. And if you visit on a warm day, which is likely in south Florida, be sure to pack swimsuits; the splash pad and water slides here are some of the best in the area.

Here's more on what to do at Lion Country Safari—and for more ideas on  Miami family activities , check out our South Florida and Miami guide .

Lion Country's Walk-Through Zoo

The animal viewing doesn't stop at the safari. Lion Country has dozens of creatures on display in its walk-through zoo as well. Some of our favorites are the colorful macaws, playful squirrel monkeys, and American alligators (this  is  Florida after all.)  Kids can visit with sheep and goats inside a petting zoo, and animal food is available to purchase (we consider it a bargain at just two dollars). Our family loves standing eye-to-eye with the giraffes on their feeding platform. Their blue tongues look so funny as they lap up lettuce leaves from eager children! (This experience costs five dollars extra.) Though currently closed, there's also an opportunity to feed lorikeets inside an aviary, or koi fish in a pond. Be sure to bring quarters for the fish food machines.

Rides & Water Park at Lion Country Safari

After you've had your fill of seeing the animals, get some wiggles out on the complimentary rides. Take to the skies on the flying elephants and dragons, or go for a whirl on the safari-themed carousel. Toddlers enjoy riding the choo-choo train, and the whole family can hop on board a pontoon boat for a tour of the park's Lake Shannalee. (Ambitious visitors can tour the lake via paddle boat too.)  There's also a 16-hole mini golf course and a gemstone mining experience (the latter is available for purchase). We love the 90-foot long sack slides, located next to the water slides.

car safari miami

Ready to get wet?  Thrill seekers can't get enough of the steep drop on the park's free-fall water slide. A slower, loopier water slide next to it makes for a more relaxing ride. And if your kids are into splash pads, you're in luck: Lion Country Safari has two. Safari Falls is huge—with slides, water sprayers, and a giant dump bucket. For the littles, there's the Safari Splash Playground, which has its own 23 water features.

Everything Else To Know about Lion Country Safari

There is a restaurant at Lion Country Safari, as well as several snack vendors and a BBQ stand. Hot dogs, burgers, and pizza are all on the menu. The park has a nice covered picnic area should you decide to bring your own food. Lion Country Safari is open 365 days a year, rain or shine (we took grandparents there on Thanksgiving and it was a big hit). Workers say the animals are actually more active on wet, cool days, though the rides and water park shut down during lightning alerts. An award-winning KOA campground  is located next to Lion Country Safari (something that's definitely on my bucket list for this fall).  The park offers plenty of online discounts, including its current Summer Savings Pass . Kids ages two and under are always admitted for free.

F***** awesome. Seriously great place. I wasn't supposed to visit on Sunday, but we stayed an extra day in south Florida just to visit. I am so happy we did. Now I've seen many wild animals in SE Asia and other regions of the world, but this safari was as good as any place. My kid loved the monkeys, kudus, rhinos, giraffes, and lions. The petting zoo with the donkeys, goats, and llama were a nice bonus after driving through the park. I thought the price to enter was fair for the experience. The restaurant though is not worth it. I'm sorry but $10 bucks for a peanut butter and jelly is crazy. I just loved the experience for myself, and more importantly for my kid. She had one of the best days ever.

Funny thing is I expected to see more Lions... as it is the namesake of this jungle establishment LOL I drove EXTRA EXTRA slow as I was in a rental car and didn't want to disturb the animals or invoke any aggressive behavior. We saw plenty of Ostriches and animals in the Elk family. This was a impromptu trip seeing as I wanted to see where it was located and it doesn't seem far when you look at the miles but it is certainly out there. My Mom had a nice time and we only drove through we never got out to go to any of the other parts of the park. I would do it again with my Grandchildren and it was hot so most of the animals were in the shade. Managed to get a few photos. The self driving narration... was either to slow or I was driving to fast??? Respectfully Reviewed

This place has gone through a lot of changes over the 50 or so years I've been coming here. Some bad, most good. The educational emphasis is lacking, with the narrated self driving tour giving little more information than a picture signpost at any zoo. The money they have spent to build and upgrade the "water park" area could have done so much more in refurbishing or even creating new animal exhibit space.

This is a must see if you want to transport yourself to Africa. The drive was 4-miles long with animals on different sections. There were animals that will walk up to your car. Most of the animals we saw were at a distance; it was a very humid, hot day so most were hiding under the shade. We saw rhinos, Impalas, ostriches, lions, and many more. There were 85 species and hundreds of animals; we didn't see them all though. The animals prefer to come out when it's cool and rainy. There was an audio tour you can pull up on your cellphone. We walked around the park and viewed some exhibits as well. There were gift/snack shops, rides, animal encounters, and various of other attractions. My family and I enjoyed seeing the animals and walking in the park; can't wait to visit again soon.

What a beautiful day for a ride through Lion Country Safari. There were 4 of us, with the oldest being 83 years old. He said he had a wonderful time! There was so much to do and see. Enjoyed the layout and all the plants to give us shade walking through the park. There are two places for kids to play in the water. Dippin dots and a frozen chocolate banana cooled us off for a bit. You can also feed the lorakeets. For lunch- The chicken fingers were tasty and large. An empanada and club sandwich hit the spot after eating an early breakfast. Oh and the a/c was just right for the hot day!

Came here with my family and it's worth the trip. You start off with the drive through where you are able to see the animals, learn about them and the conservation efforts. Then you can park and hit the park. My son loved the carousel, train ride, petting goats and feeding the giraffes. Highly recommend this place for families.

Took my family from out of state to Lion Country Safari and they had a BLAST!!!!!! She was shocked at the price we paid for 2 adults and 2 children but by the end of the day, it was deemed well worth it!

We had an amazing time!!!! My grandchildren absolutely loved it. It's clean and well organized. The rides are perfect for young children. The petting zoo was fun and the animals were well cared for. Unfortunately the giraffes were not hungry on this particular day. The other animals on the drive through were active and gave a nice show. The reason for four stars is that's it's pretty pricey. Go to one of the turnpike rest areas and grab coupons for $5 off per person. Bring your own food too. At least drinks. Enjoy!!!

What a great day to spend bring the family here. This is obviously catered more to families since they have a whole kid section but don't be discouraged because it's worth to be a kid for the day. Lots of animals to see while you're in the car but I definitely wanted to pet more animals . Goats are $2 dollars per and to feed the giraffes it's $5 dollars for 5 lettuce leafs. One day pass is about $50 dollars after tax . Highly suggest to go early, since you're following cars be mindful about that . I noticed around 1 they fed the animals and it was better to get closer photos and videos . Has a few places to sit down eat and grab a cold beverage to cool off . For the price this is worth it .

Awesome experience! It starts with a drive thru to see all of the animals. They have a wide variety of animals- zebra, gorillas, water buffalo, lions, etc. They have a splash pad, small slides and some rides for the kids to enjoy inside the park- after the drive thru. There are boat rides and paddle boat options. You can bring your own food and snacks. Plan to arrive early and spend all day here! This is great for young kids!

Lion Country Safari Entrance

Lion Country Safari is about driving through the plains along zebras, rhinos and giraffes... as curious ostriches come for a closer look and tap your windshield... herds of eland, blackbucks, buffalos, wildebeest... ok, so it's not the great migration, but really, there are herds of animals here, not the lone lion here and there, we are talking a whole pride of lions roaming the "reserve"... a crash of rhinos... plenty of giraffes... and you get to drive through in the comfort of your own car!

Lion Country has long been one of our favorite parks to spend the day, definitely worth the drive to West Palm Beach from Miami.

There are two parts to the park and when visiting, both are a must

  • The Safari World Amusement Park Section

You need at least 5-6 hours to take advantage of what the park offers, and can easily make it a full-day affair, which is what we normally do.

So let's take you on Safari and show you around!

Safari on Wheels: The Drive-Through Safari

Drive Through Safari at Lion Country Safari Park

This section of the park is the "Drive-Through" section, where the animals roam in their respective wildlife areas or preserves which are clearly fenced off and separated from each other.

At the entrance you will be given a CD recording with all the information about the animals and habitats in the order you will see them, you can play and pause as you go along.

You drive through on a 4-mile loop, passing through all the areas . This section can take anywhere from one hour to two and a half hours, depending on how long and how many stops you make.

The areas are representative of wildlife reserves around the world, Las Pampas in South America, the Indian Gir Forest, and of course, many of the well-known reserves in Africa.

This is a one-way road, so no chance of getting "lost", just follow along...

The animals are obviously used to seeing cars drive-by, that said, these are wild animals, this is their home , and they definitely have the right of way, so give them a wide berth...

Lion Country Safari Zebra Crossing the Road

The animals can be so close, you really can get a good look, no cages or fences... no binoculars or photo lenses needed...

Fatal crashes cause weekend temporary Turnpike closures in southwestern Miami-Dade

Fhp on weekend southbound turnpike crashes: 1 dead in cutler bay; 1 dead, 1 injured near bird road.

Andrea Torres , Digital Journalist

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Two fatal crashes prompted southbound closures on the Florida Turnpike on Saturday night and early Sunday morning in Miami-Dade County. Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded.

At about 2:15 a.m., Sunday, a fatal two-vehicle crash shut down southbound Turnpike traffic at the Eureka Drive exit in Cutler Bay . According to Lt. Alex Camacho, a spokesman for FHP, a passenger died after the crash.

“The driver and passenger of one of the vehicles were transported to Jackson South Hospital, where the passenger later died,” Camacho wrote in a statement.

At about 9:15 p.m., Saturday, a fatal three-vehicle chain-reaction crash stalled southbound Turnpike traffic at Bird Road near the Westwood Lakes and Kendale Lakes neighborhoods, and it closed the on-ramp at Southwest Eighth Street in the University Park - Tamiami area.

Witnesses said they were on their way to Kendall when the traffic congestion extended from the area west of the Florida International University’s main campus on Eighth Street to the area east of HCA Florida Kendall Hospital on Bird Road and lasted for hours.

“The Turnpike was closed throughout the preliminary investigation and traffic was diverted onto SW 8 ST,” Camacho wrote.

A white sports utility vehicle and a gray sedan collided first and stopped on the left southbound lane. According to Camacho, an oncoming pickup truck crashed into the gray sedan — and struck two people who had gotten out of their cars after the first crash.

“As a result of the secondary crash, one of the occupants that was struck died on scene and the other was transported to Kendall Regional Hospital in critical condition,” Camacho wrote referring to the former name of the now HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.

The cause of the crashes was under investigation and authorities had yet to release the identities of the two dead.

Cleveland Browns' Lonnie Phelps arrested for DUI after allegedly crashing into Key West restaurant

By Hunter Geisel

Updated on: June 20, 2024 / 5:37 PM EDT / CBS Miami

KEY WEST — Cleveland Browns player Lonnie Phelps was arrested late Wednesday night on DUI-related charges after he allegedly crashed an SUV into a Florida Keys restaurant.

Phelps , 23, a defensive end for the Cleveland Browns, was charged with DUI after he rammed his vehicle into the Red Shoe Island Bistro, located at 411 Petronia Street in Key West, according to a police report obtained by  Cleveland.com .

Key West police said Phelps refused a breath test and was noncooperative with officers. The report stated that he and a female passenger appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.

A 23-year old was arrested for DUI after crashing his vehicle into a Petronia Street restaurant Wednesday night. The building and the vehicle were significantly damaged, but there were no injuries. Posted by Key West Police Department on  Thursday, June 20, 2024

The building and vehicle were "significantly damaged" during the crash, the Key West Police Department stated on Facebook . No injuries were reported.

The restaurant shared video of the damage on their Facebook page, which showed the dining room filled with rubble from the wall and the hole in which Phelps' car went through. According to Red Shoe Island Bistro, they were closed when the crash happened.

No one was hurt by the car that drove into our restaurant tonight. Thankfully, we were closed. It could’ve been really bad…Angels were looking out for us all. We will reopen as soon as possible. Thanks for your support and patience. Posted by Red Shoe Island Bistro on Wednesday, June 19, 2024

"It could've been really bad... Angels were looking out for us all," Red Shoe said on their post. "We will reopen as soon as possible."

Joseph Schroeder, the building's owner, told Cleveland.com that the crash caused about $300,000 in damages.

A Browns spokesperson told Cleveland.com that the team is aware of the incident and gathering more information.

Phelps, who turns 24 in August, went undrafted last year out of the University of Kansas and signed with the Browns. The Cincinnati native spent the 2023 season on the team's practice squad and did not appear in a regular-season game, CBS Sports reported .

Rapper Travis Scott arrested after Miami Beach police say he drunkenly yelled at people on a yacht

Travis Scott was arrested in Miami Beach early Thursday after officers say they found him at the city’s marina shouting obscenities at people on a yacht and he disobeyed their order to leave.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Rapper Travis Scott was arrested in Miami Beach early Thursday on misdemeanor charges of trespassing and public intoxication after officers say they found him at the city’s marina shouting obscenities at people on a yacht and disobeyed their order to leave.

Officers went to the marina shortly before 1 a.m. after receiving a call about people fighting on a yacht, according to a police report.

When they arrived, they found Scott, 33, standing on the dock yelling at people on the ship, the report says. Officers told him to sit down, but he kept standing back up and yelling. They could smell alcohol on his breath, the report says.

The man who called police did not want to press charges, so Scott was allowed to leave.

As he walked away, however, Scott kept turning to yell obscenities at people on the yacht. He left as a passenger in a waiting car, but returned five minutes later and ignored officers’ orders to again leave, the report says.

Officers say he then began yelling again, disturbing people in nearby boats and buildings. When officers asked if he had been drinking, he replied, “It’s Miami.” He was arrested.

Scott was released from Miami-Dade County Jail before noon after posting a $650 bond.

After his release, he posted on the social platform X, “Lol.”

His attorney, Bradford Cohen, said in a statement that Scott was “detained due to a misunderstanding.”

“There was absolutely no physical altercation involved, and we thank the authorities for working with us towards a swift and amicable resolution,” Cohen said.

Scott, one of the biggest names in hip-hop and whose birth name is Jacques Webster, has more than 100 songs that made the Billboard Hot 100 and released four singles that topped the chart: “Sicko Mode,” “Highest in the Room,” “The Scotts,” and “Franchise.”

AP AUDIO: Rapper Travis Scott arrested after Miami Beach police say he drunkenly yelled at people on a yacht

AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports musician Travis Scott was arrested after police say he was drunk and yelling.

He has two children with his former girlfriend, media personality and businesswoman Kylie Jenner.

This is not the first time Scott has been involved in a police investigation.

Ten people were killed in a crowd surge at Scott’s 2021 performance at his Astroworld Festival in his native Houston. Attendees were packed so tightly that many couldn’t breathe or move their arms. Those killed, who ranged in age from 9 to 27, died from compression asphyxia , which an expert likened to being crushed by a car.

Lawyers for the victims alleged in lawsuits that the deaths and hundreds of injuries at the concert were caused by negligent planning and a lack of concern over capacity and safety at the event.

Scott, promoter Live Nation, and the others who were sued have denied these claims, saying safety was their No. 1 concern. They said what happened could not have been foreseen.

The final lawsuit was settled last month.

After a police investigation , a grand jury declined to indict Scott, along with five others connected to the festival.

Local news | miami-dade county officially files to evict miami seaquarium.

A lawsuit filed Tuesday in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court is the final step needed before a judge can rule on whether the Miami Seaquarium must vacate the property after nearly 70 years. (Marta Lavandier/AP)

What could be the final chapter of the Miami Seaquarium began this week as Miami-Dade County filed an eviction lawsuit to force the marine-mammal theme park off its government-owned land on the Miami waterfront.

While the county has been warning the for-profit Seaquarium of a looming eviction over alleged instances of substandard animal care and a deteriorating facility, the suit filed Tuesday in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court is the final step needed before a judge can rule on whether the park must vacate the property after nearly 70 years there.

Miami-Dade owns the 38-acre site the Seaquarium’s Mexico-based parent company leases from the county after buying out the previous operator in 2022.
