Monsoon Months: May to mid-September

Winter Months: September to Feb

Islands To Visit in Lakshadweep

Agatti island.

Agatti Island will be your first stop as you land at Lakshadweep . The island boasts of having some of the finest beaches and offers tons of water sports activities.  The beaches are clean and the water is deep blue teeming with the most colorful and diverse underwater world.

Where To Stay:

Local guesthouses and a few private-run resorts are the only options.

Do check the latest update on the official tourism site.

Agatti Island

Bangaram Island

Surrounded by a shallow lagoon this island is one of the most beautiful islands of Lakshadweep. It boasts world-class corals and rich marine life. From shipwreck snorkeling sites to hidden beaches with hermit crabs, the bluest of the blue ocean to a lagoon full of sea turtles, Bangaram fits the bill perfectly for a perfect beach experience.

Where To Stay:

The only option is to stay at the Bangaram Island resort which is run by SPORTS ( Lakshadweep Tourism ).

Travel Time

  •  From Agatti: 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the boat.

Bangaram Island

Pareli 1 & 2

These tiny islands surrounded by the shallow lagoon on one side and the deep sea on the other can be covered by foot in 15-30 minutes. The shallow lagoon is home to numerous sea turtles whereas the deep sea is home to sharks and stingrays.

The island is full of ( hungry 😉 ) hermit crabs, and sea turtles.

No options. These islands can be visited as day trips from Bangaram, Agatti or Thinnakara

  • From Agatti: 30 -75 min depending on the boat
  • From Bangaram: 20-40 min depending on the boat
  • From Thinnakara: 15 min

Lakshadweep Itinerary

A bite-sized island midst a shallow lagoon makes Thinnakara an ideal place for vacation. It is isolated and just a few cottages are dotted on the shores. It is a perfect escape for those who want to be away from the rush of life. You can snorkel, sail out in your kayak, play beach volleyball, and relax in a hammock doing nothing.

Even at times, it might happen you are the only one with the resort staff on the island.

Cottages on the Island

  • From Agatti: 20-40 min depending on the boat.

Thinnakara

Kadamat Island

Kadmat is one of the most stunning islands in the archipelago. You will find dolphins cleaving through the clear blue waters, sea turtles all around might come to greet you on your way to Kadmat from Agatti.

The phenomenal sweep of talcum-powder sand with dramatic waves breaking across the bay is an everyday thing here. Apart from the scenic vista, the island also offers various water sports activities like diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paragliding to name a few. Some of the best diving spots can be found here.

Kadmat Island Resort – You have an option of NonAC tents and AC rooms to choose from. However, the Non-AC tents are a little far from the main resort.

Kadamt

Minicoy Island

Minicoy Island is a beautiful coral island dotted in the Arabian Sea full of dense coconut groves, a long stretch of white powdery beaches, and an amazing marine world. The island is distinct from the rest of the islands in terms of culture, lifestyle, and language. You can find a lot of influence from Maldivian and South Indian culture on this island.

There are three tourist cottages and one 20-bed tourist home.

Minicoy Island

Kalpeni Island

Kalpeni is famed for its bewitching landscape with the small islets Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north called Cheriyam. You can walk to Cheriyam island from Kalpeni during low tides but make sure you are not barefoot.

The islands of Kalpeni were reshaped because of a huge storm in the 1800s and the formation of the beautiful corals is attributed to this storm. It has the largest lagoons among all the islands of Lakshadweep. These lagoons are quite shallow and are perfect for all sorts of water sports activities. You can also explore the Sait Moinuddin mosque while on the island.

Koomel Beach Resort is the only resort for tourists and it is run by SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism).

Kalpeni

Kavaratti Island

It is the capital of Lakshadweep and the most developed of all the islands. Apart from sun-drenched white sandy beaches, and amazing coral reefs, you can also explore the aquarium and museum on the island.

Ujra Mosque constructed by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim in the 17th century is one of the most prominent attractions on the island and draws a lot of tourists. The island also offers a plethora of water sports activities like kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, and scuba diving at a very reasonable rate.

I am planning a trip to lakshdweep in january, I will be alone and do not want to spend much on stay. Please suggest whether i can get some cheap stay after reaching there, or prebooking/e-booking is required? Please note I am a solo traveller and I generally focus on sightseeing and local cuisines and culture. I can manage with some cheap accomodation.

December 9, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Hi Prashant, you need a permit to travel to Lakshadweep. This permit is arranged by SPORTS or any other travel agent which takes care of your lodging (the details of travel agents are on the SPORTS Lakshadweep website). We would highly recommend a pre-booking. For more details, you can check the website of SPORTS Lakshadweep.

' src=

November 27, 2022 at 4:41 pm

I want to plan my own trip and not go for any package. Will Sports help me get permit if I only book my lodgings through them?

Thanks for detailed tour guide. I really like to visit this place. Carry some nostalgic memories. My father was working in Minicoy long time back when I was a toddler. So I wan to see the place again taking with my mother. Can you please suggest a 2-3 days (max) itinerary covering Minicoy. I want to see Minicoy.

December 3, 2016 at 10:30 am

Glad you liked our post, Minicoy is near Kalpeni & Kavaratti so either you can plan to visit one of the islands and visit Minicoy on a day trip or you could check weekend cruise packages from Cochin.. hope that helps

What is the approximate total cost for a week trip. I want to mainly know how much we would spend on daily stays at each island and the no of ppl on sharing basis.

' src=

January 21, 2017 at 9:41 am

Awesome post! It’s so confusing the information on google about these islands! Just wondering – is Minicoy an inhabited island? Just because you mention that there are 3 guest houses owned by locals there. Also if we were to book a few days through SPORT and stay at their accomodation, could we extend our stay and stay at local accomodation somewhere? Do we need to apply to SPORTs to be able to stay in local accomodation? I just assume local places would be cheaper?

' src=

February 17, 2017 at 7:39 am

did you book the whole trip through SPORTS ?

July 16, 2017 at 1:44 pm

Not the whole trip only the accommodation and transfer between islands … food is inclusive

' src=

July 26, 2017 at 4:50 pm

hey..Thanks for the informative post.. Though I have a query.. you have given quite a detailed information of the islands while SPORTS website is mostly about about the cruise packages and they dont cover all the island either. Did you guys make your own itinerary and visited the place via flight. Would it be possible for you to give an idea about the ititnerary you followed.

How to Plan a Trip to Lakshadweep? Which Island to Visit? Part-1

How to plan a trip to Lakshadweep with kids? How to get the entry permit? How to do the bookings? Which island should we visit?

Let’s Plan a Trip to Lakshadweep with Kids

Hi guys, I am doing a Travel Series on Lakshadweep on my Blog, growingwithnemit.com and YouTube channel, @GrowingWithNemit. And, this is the 3rd post of the series. Lakshadweep is a group of 36 islands, out of which only 10 are inhabited and tourists can stay only on 5 of these islands . But entry to Lakshadweep is restricted and entry permit is compulsory to visit these islands even for the Indians. No doubt, people have so many questions about visiting Lakshadweep. So, is it really difficult to visit these islands? How to get the entry permit? Can we take kids to Lakshadweep? How to do the bookings? Which island should we visit? I will take up all these questions and do this post in 2-3 parts. In today’s post (Part-1), I will discuss about which island to visit in Lakshadweep. So, let’s plan a trip to Lakshadweep with kids!

The planning for Lakshadweep trip can be a little tricky and may get tiresome if you decide to do everything on your own. This is what we did because we like to plan things on our own. And, this is also the reason I am in a position to share my experience and learnings with you all . Hopefully, I will be able to help you in clearing all your doubts regarding Lakshadweep Travel.

Before moving forward, if you are still in the process of deciding which beach destination to visit, then do check out the first post of this series.

Andaman or Lakshadweep? How to Choose the Perfect Beach Destination?

Let’s talk about what all islands are open for tourists and which island to visit.

Which Island to Visit in Lakshadweep with Kids?

As I mentioned earlier, there are only 5 islands which are open for tourists with stay options. To apply for Entry Permit, first you need to decide which island/s you want to visit.

  • Agatti (No Govt. authorized hotel/resort)

I have also made a video on the same topic, you may check it out here-

Let’s talk about each of these islands one by one so that you will get an idea about what to expect.

1. Agatti Island

Agattti island is quite famous as it’s the only island with the airstrip and an airport in Lakshadweep. So, anyone coming to Lakshadweep by flight, will be getting down at Agatti only. Also, the island has one of the most beautiful lagoons in Lakshadweep full of fascinating corals and multicolored alluring fishes.

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts of this series that tourism in Lakshadweep is managed by the Govt. authority, SPORTS . They also provide well maintained accommodation on the islands. However, Agatti is the only island that doesn’t have any govt. authorized hotel or resort facility for the tourists.

Agatti Island

When we were in Agatti, we saw a few private resorts on the Airport road that are open for tourists. Upon enquiring, we got to know that one can book these resorts directly or through travel agents.

Here are a few resorts (with their contact numbers) that you may want to check out-

  • Seashells Resort – 094477 57006 (They have their own website too)
  • White Pearl Beach Resort – 085477 03595
  • Kasims Beach Villa – 011 3467 9515
  • R Guest House – 081389 77917

These private stay options are comparatively cheaper than the Govt. run resorts. Since we were visiting Lakshadweep for the first time, we didn’t want to take any risks hence we chose the Govt. authorized resort for our stay on a different island.

But we are quite sure now that for our next visit we are definitely going to explore the private stay options as well. I feel if you are traveling with very young kids and you are not very sure about traveling by boat then simply choose to stay at Agatti.

All the other 4 islands have Govt. run resorts for stay. And, to reach those islands, one has to take a boat from Agatti island.

2. Kadmat  Island

Kadmat is about 76 kms from Agatti. One can reach Kadmat by boat (2-3 hour ride) which operates only on Monday/Wednesday/Friday.

There are no private resorts on the island. Only one Govt. authorized property, Kadmat Island Beach Resort for which pre booking is mandatory.

Only BSNL network works on the island and there’s no internet connectivity. Also, consumption of alcohol is not allowed on any of the islands except Bangaram. Don’t even think about carrying your own booze with you!

I feel the boat ride to Kadmat from Agatti would be too tiring and a bit boring for kids.

3.   Kavaratti Island

Kavaratti is the capital of Lakshadweep and the headquarters of the Administration . It is also the most developed island in Lakshadweep and offers many exciting activities and places to explore. The island has 52 mosques, an aquarium, a museum and a of course a light house as well. Kavaratti offers a lot more to the visitors than just the pristine beaches.

So, if you want to get the local experience, learn more about the people of Lakshadweep and explore the local cuisine then Kavaratti is where you should go. So, if you want to plan a trip to Lakshadweep and want to explore the other side of Lakshadweep then, you may consider Kavaratti Island.

There are 2 ways to reach Kavaratti –

  • By ship (Samudram Cruise) where you get to spend 1 day on the island, no night stay option available on the island with this package.

I have shared all the details for Samudram Cruise here – What is the Best Way to Reach Lakshadweep with Kids ?

Do check it out.

  • Take a boat (2.5 hours ride) from Agatti. You need a confirmed booking at one of the resorts on the island.

For stay, you can either book a private accommodation (many options, please check on Google) or book the Govt. authorized resort (Kavaratti Beach Resort/Paradise Hut Resort) .

Here are the charges for the Govt. resort at Kavaratti-

You may get better network and internet connectivity on Kavaratti. Again reaching Kavaratti could be a bit tiresome but considering that you get to explore a lot more of Lakshadweep here as compared to any other island, the journey seems like doable.

Still, it’s your decision so plan wisely as per your family’s interest!

4. Minicoy Island

Minicoy is the second largest and one of the few inhabited islands in Lakshadweep. It is known for the unspoiled and untouched beaches. And, it’s famous for having remarkable resemblance to the beaches of Maldives and Mauritius .

There is only one way to reach Minicoy Island and that’s by Ship from Kochi.

As this island is quite far from Agatti, no tourist ships/boats operate from there.

So, you can either book the Samudram package where you get to enjoy the cruise as well you get to spend a day at Minicoy and other 2 islands. No night stay.

Or, you can book the Swaying Palm Package   which is a 6 or 7 days, cruise + island stay package where you get to spend 2 nights on the ship and 3 or 4 nights on the island.

Source – http://lakshadweeptourism.com/

Minicoy has a different language (Mahi), culture and traditions as compared to the other islands. Again, Minicoy is your go to destination if you want something more than just the beaches and the water sports .

This island is also famous for its Lava folk dance, colorful race boats (Jahadhoni) and a 300 foot tall lighthouse which was built in 1885 by the Britishers.

Visiting Minicoy is definitely on our bucket list now but I am not sure if it’s a good idea to visit this island with small kids (younger than 10 years old) under Swaying palm package. So, plan wisely!

5. Bangaram  Island

Bangaram is the most famous island among the tourists and it’s also the least explored part of Lakshadweep. It has also been ranked among the best getaways of the world . It’s the uninhabited island and has only one Govt. run beach resort for the tourists.

It is located 12 kms from Agatti and it takes about 30-45 mins to reach Bangaram island by boat .

Since no local people are living here except for the workers, laborers and staff of the resort, you may not find anything else on the island. But I can vouch for the most beautiful and pristine beaches lined with soft white sand and the mesmerizing views of the surrounding which you may not find anywhere else. And, you can indulge in a range of water sport activities!

Bangaram Island

We stayed at Bangaram Island for 4 nights in AC Cottages and it has been our best beach experience in India so far.

Source – https://www.lakshadweeptourism.com/

Now, you can also book newly built Wooden Huts on Bangaram Island .

If you want to plan a trip to Lakshadweep with kids, you can choose Bangaram Island without any doubts. I will share all about our stay and the activities we did at Bangaram in my upcoming posts. So, keep following this series.

Here’s an informative video for you, where I have talked about the different ways to reach Lakshadweep. Do check it out-

I feel visiting Agatti Island in Lakshadweep would be the easiest if you are traveling with kids. You just need to catch a flight from Kochi to Agatti. You can spend as many days as you like in Agatti, just pre-book a private resort on the island. Meet the local people and try the local cuisine as well.

In case you are interested in exploring the local side of the Lakshadweep and also visit the other islands apart from Agatti then you may choose to visit Kadmat or Kavaratti or Minicoy Island.

And, in case you want to experience the untouched and unspoiled beauty of Lakshadweep and also want to stay on an uninhabited island with not many people around, then Bangaram is where you should go.

Lastly, if you want to visit 2-3 islands in budget then you can choose the Samudram Package. And, if you want to experience the ship as well as stay on the island then visit the Minicoy Island through Swaying Palm Package.

I hope this covers up the question which island to visit in Lakshadweep.

Now we come to the next question.

How to do the bookings? And, How to get the Entry Permit?

I will take up these questions in the next part of this post. So, stay tuned and keep following the Lakshadweep Travel Series . You may also check out the Lakshadweep Playlist on our YouTube channel.

Which Island would you choose to visit if you plan a trip to Lakshadweep? Tell me in the comments below. And, if you have any specific questions feel free to ask in the comments below. I will try to answer your queries to the best of my knowledge.

If you liked the post or found it helpful, then do share it further with your friends and family! Till then, Bye Bye and Take Care.

Ask Skift: How Is India Marketing Tourism?

Rashaad Jorden , Skift

June 11th, 2024 at 10:53 AM EDT

As India's role in the global travel industry continues to grow enormously, here's a look at how Indian authorities market tourism.

Rashaad Jorden

India’s clout in travel is booming, especially as the country’s growing middle class is poised to play a major role in the industry’s growth . India is also the world’s largest emerging outbound tourism market .

But India has been prioritizing domestic tourism, having recently cut its overseas promotion budget by 97%. Of the 1.7 billion trips Indians took in 2022, 99% were domestic.

As India’s travel and tourism industry is projected to generate nearly $24 billion of revenue in 2024 , how is India marketing tourism?

We asked our intelligence chatbot Ask Skift the question. Ask Skift used information appearing in our past news coverage and research, and we also conducted additional reporting on the matter.

What Ask Skift Said:

India has been actively marketing its tourism through various strategies. According to articles from Skift published in May 2024:

  • The Indian Ministry of Tourism and state tourism boards have been participating in international travel trade events such as the Arabian Travel Market and IMEX in Frankfurt to attract international travelers .
  • The country has been promoting unexplored destinations like Lakshadweep and Ladakh to diversify its tourism offerings.
  • To facilitate foreign arrivals, efforts have been made to liberalize, streamline, and simplify the visa regime .
  • India has developed a national strategy for sustainable tourism with a goal to strive for carbon-neutral, and resource-efficient tourism while safeguarding natural and cultural resources. Goa state tourism has launched a regenerative tourism campaign to nullify the negative impact of tourism and make a net-positive impact on the environment and local communities.

What Else You Need to Know:

India’s Union Budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year included a big increase in funding , with Skift reporting that domestic tourism was the primary focus for Indian authorities.

Himmat Anand, founder of A Dog’s Story, one the first chain of pet-friendly boutique hotels in India, said Indian authorities would emphasize religious tourism, which should give domestic tourism a boost.

But Rajeev Kohli, joint managing director of Creative Travel India, believes Indian officials aren’t consciously marketing religious tourism.

“The government has had a focus on religious sites as a part of large politics, but that is a bit different from marketing them as tourist places. The discourse is a bit convoluted,” Kohli said. “Pilgrimage tourism has always been significantly large … The major change has been the newfound media interest in the story.”

Indian authorities have emphasized a growing emphasis on sustainable tourism. The Ministry of Tourism formed the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism in 2022 as part of the industry’s strategy to bring sustainability into the mainstream. The ministry had launched the previous year the Travel for LiFe campaign to encourage responsible tourism.

In addition, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board runs a Responsible Tourism Mission , which the agency’s Managing Director Sheo Shekhar Shukla said promotes organic farming and locally sourced cuisine. Visitors to the state have the opportunity to participate in activities such as pottery, bamboo craft and cooking.

Indian officials are also promoting some of the country’s less visited destinations, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi notably promoting his January trip to Lakshadweep on social media . Google searches for the archipelago surged to an all-time high shortly after Modi’s visit. Online travel company MakeMyTrip reported a 3,400% increase in searches for Lakshadweep after the prime minister’s trip.

However, India’s popular attractions aren’t poised to see the same level of promotion overseas. While Shukla said the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board would participate in events such as ITB Berlin and the World Travel Market in London, the amount the Union Budget set aside for overseas promotion during the 2024-2025 fiscal year decreased substantially — a 97% reduction to roughly $361,000 (30 million rupees) .

In addition, the Indian government has closed several India Tourism offices worldwide.

“(Thirty million Indian rupees) for overseas tourism promotion is a joke, and make no mistake, the joke’s on us,” said Himanshu Dwivedi, director of Monkfoot Travels .

Kohli cites a lack of political interest as the reason why the country hasn’t marketed itself heavily overseas.

“I hope the new government will change that,” Kohli said. “We need political leadership that cares about doing their job. We need to allow our bureaucrats and policymakers some freedom to run their ministries and remove the level of political interference we currently have.”
