2003 Voyager Radiator change

Swapped the radiator in a 03 Voyager with 3.3L yesterday and the check engine light came on afterwards. Fans were running properly with the engine light on but when I disconnected battery to try to reset ECM, fans are not working. Please help.  

Maybe you accidentally didn't plug the harness back in or didn't go in all the way? What CEL code present?  

The fans won't run with the batt disconnected.  

Thank you Mr. Obvious. I will be able to put a meter on it later today hopefully.  

No spin with either engine temp rise or when you turn on the A/C? Probably a bad rad cooling fan relay mounted between the grill and the A/C condenser/radiator on a cross member. Pull the connector and jump pins 1&2 (orange with red tracer and dark blue with dark green tracer) together. Fans should spin right away, keys in your pocket. Have you checked the 40 amp rad fan fuse?  

Let me clarify. 1. Changed radiator. Without disconnecting battery. 2. Refilled coolant, heater on while topping off. 3. Fans and heat worked during topping off. 4. Noticed check engine light on. 5. Removed negative cable from battery and replaced. Both fans started running immediately, engine cool, keys in pocket. 6. Removed positive cable from battery and replaced. Both fans shut off, and will not run with engine running and temp coming up. Just wondering if I triggered the engine code by not disconnecting the battery before starting and disconnecting both fans. Pretty sure all relays and fuses were working fine until I disconnected the battery. If I clear the code with a meter will it reset everything back to normal? I have a borrowed Cen-tech meter I can check and clear codes with but can't get to the vehicle until Friday evening.  

Sticking or bad relay?  

Meter = scanner? Scanner will clear codes but won't reset "everything". Disconnecting the negative battery cable for a period of time will reset "everything". Sometimes seconds works. Sometimes it takes overnight. If the fans spin when A/C is turned on you can just about eliminate the PCM as the culprit.

Good chance you don't have any problem at all. Did you see if fans will come on with the AC? The engine really has to be hot for the computer to turn the fans on, if it was even slightly cool outside chances are it didn't get hot enough.  

I almost never hear the fans running...and I live in Florida.  

There is a chance that the check engine light was from an overheat while refilling the coolant, when a hot air pocket passed the temp sensor, but cant be sure untill you pull the code either with the code reader you are borrowing or by doing the key dance to display the code on the odometer. I have had the fan control relay go bad both ways, stuck on, running, key off locked and parked in the drive way, after a lighting strike that ran battery dead, and also stuck off when it was old causing overheating in summer. The fan takes a while to turn on when just at idle unless it is really hot outside. At least 20 minutes from cold and longer if you have the heater on. I will only use the low fan setting when refilling the coolant to help this. I am not suprised that the fan kicked on when the battery was connected, for a few seconds. How long did your fans run before you pulled the battery? Also I would like to know if you checked for fan operation by turning on the ac on cold and recirculation as previously suggested. If you talk to linemen from the power company they will tell you that what we know about electricity is a lot of theory and electricity can do some strange things that are not expected and combined with the uniqueness of the solid state fan control relay and the ecu, it might just be a fluke or surge that turned on the fan relay as the ecu booted up.  

I've never heard the fans run on my '03?  

My fan goes on when the car is ideling, just after a few minutes. Even at winter times.  

I have heard my fans come on many times, including when the engine has not reached the operational temp.  

Mine must be so quiet compared to the '88 I don't notice it! The '88 sounds like a fan jet!  

Must not be the OE rad fans then. On my van, when the rad fans come on when warming up in the garage (W. garage door open obviously), I can hear the rad fans come on all the way in my kitchen. So not that quiet.  

Sorry to leave you guys hanging but I didn't get back to the vehicle until a few days ago. So, the code it was showing on the scanner was p1491, radiator relay circuit. And scanner would not let me clear it. Not intending to let this damn thing beat me, I investigated further and noticed that the fan relay was NOT riveted to the bumper behind the grill. Instead just a riveted broken piece of metal. LOL I didn't mention that the van had been backed into in the front. Soooo, apparently when we replaced the radiator, the relay fell down along the side. We will be putting a new relay in on Saturday morning.
