Warning beacon Also referred to as warning buoy. Automated transmitter for a verbal message or another type of signal that warns approaching spacecrafts of a possible danger (TNG: "Identity Crisis", VOY: "Bliss", "Memorial", ENT: "Observer Effect").

The quarantine warning on the USS Lantree worked in a similar fashion, albeit without a separate beacon.

Warp barrier Limit to warp propulsion. Refers rather to the peak transitional thresholds than to Eugene's limit that only stands for the fundamental physical principle that infinite speed is impossible (generic).

nacelle definition star trek

Warp bomb Weapon of mass destruction based on the principle of the warp drive, developed by the inhabitants of Kiley 279 (SNW: "Strange New Worlds").

The warp drive consists of the matter/antimatter reaction (power generation) and the nacelles with the warp coils (using the power to create the warp field). I take it that the inhabitants of Kiley 279 didn't bother about the latter part, which is arguably more complex and very likely beyond their grasp anyway. Also, they wouldn't have dilithium to create a controlled reaction, or even wouldn't know they need dilithium. They were interested in an uncontrolled reaction, a matter/antimatter bomb. But the mere existence of antimatter (as e.g. in VOY: "Friendship One") would not create a "warp signature", and the weapon wouldn't be called a "warp bomb" but a photon torpedo.

Warp coil Toroid or split toroid element that generates a subspace field when energized by a modulated plasma stream. A set of several warp coils is combined in a warp nacelle. Plasma injectors serve to adjust the activation sequences of the single warp coils in a way that a propulsive warp field is formed (generic).

Concerning the technical plausibility, the warp coils are the most critical part of the propulsion system. It is not exactly defined what a warp field actually is, let alone how it can be generated. The only time we can see the warp coils of a ship is when they are being serviced in VOY: "Nightingale" (discounting the pathetic device called "warp coil" in ENT: "Damage").

Warp core Part of the warp drive in which power is generated through a controlled annihilation of matter and antimatter , also referred to as warp reactor or as matter/antimatter reaction chamber (M/ARC). The complete warp power generation system including the warp core, matter and antimatter injectors and constriction elements, is called matter/antimatter reaction assembly (M/ARA). Matter and antimatter stream are combined in the dilithium crystal inside the warp core, resulting in a (warp) plasma stream. A failure of antimatter containment is commonly referred to as warp core breach. In this case antimatter can get in contact with matter, leading to a disastrous explosion that destroys the ship. In case of a containment failure, the warp core offers the option of an emergency shutdown. If the shutdown does not work, it is possible to eject the whole M/ARA (generic).

It is a quite optimistic assumption that in case of a pending warp core breach there is enough time left to try the emergency shutdown and finally eject the M/ARA and that the remaining time can even be exactly determined. Moreover, the breach would probably be stimulated by the vibrations during the ejection. On the other hand, it is disturbing that such an extremely dangerous technology is commonplace in starships, considering that life in the 24th century is nearly free of risks. The problem of containment seems to be especially severe in Galaxy-class ships, three of which have been prematurely destroyed by warp core breaches, though they were supposed to have a lifetime of 100 years.

Warp core breach The worst possible accident to happen on a warp-driven starship. Caused by an antimatter containment failure, matter and antimatter may collide in larger quantities, leading to a chain reaction that inevitably destroys the whole ship (generic).

Warp core ejection Emergency procedure to save a starship from a pending warp core breach (VOY: "Cathexis", "Day of Honor", "Course: Oblivion", "Renaissance Man", "Star Trek: Insurrection").

The warp speed table was changed in accordance with Roddenberry's wish that Warp 10 should be the absolute maximum velocity ( Eugene's limit ). The recalibration, however, must not be mistaken as a speed limit. At Warp 9, the speed is 729c for the old and 1516c for the new scale. Above Warp 9, the two scales diverge significantly, and the old Warp 10 speed is 1000c, whereas it is infinite for the new warp table. So any speed is still possible in the new scale, only the values of 9.99... are not easy to handle for the starship crew. This might be the reason why the scale is changed again in the potential future in TNG: "All Good Things", where Warp 13 is possible. The change could also be attributed to the introduction of transwarp . While the apparent speed and the cochrane value steadily rise with the warp factor, the power expenditure exhibits remarkable peaks at each full warp factor. Explaining these peak transitional thresholds leads to a reasonable (yet conjectural) definition of the old as well as of the new warp scale.

A symmetrical, non-propulsive warp field is used for 24th century starship computer cores , where it allows FTL travel of electrons or photons within the field limits (TNGTM) . A warp field does not seem to be much different from a subspace field, and the transition from one to the other is continuous, as is indicated by the energy vs. warp factor diagram. On his website Jason Hinson devises a more specific and more plausible definition of the warp field than canon sources. According to his theory, a warp field "couples the frame of reference of everything inside the warp field to the frame of reference of subspace. This becomes true regardless of what the frame of reference of the ship would be without the warp field there (i.e. it is true regardless of the actual speed of the ship with respect to subspace). Thus, while the warp field is active, the ship's frame of reference remains the frame of reference of subspace and is not dependent on the ships speed. This is what places the ship outside of the realm of relativity and allows it to travel faster than light without gross violations of causality." Read also my conjectural theory on subspace fields .

Warp injector See warp core, antimatter injector .

Warp matrix Part of the warp power system of a Starfleet ship from the 22nd to the 24th century (DS9: "What You Leave Behind", VOY: "Unimatrix Zero", ENT: "United", "Affliction", "Divergence").

It is not certain what warp matrix actually denotes, as the term was apparently made up without the "blessing" of the TNGTM (yes, I know that the book is not authoritative but it makes more sense than usual Treknology). But we may imagine that the matrix is either a special arrangement of the dilithium crystals inside the warp core (rather than the structure of the crystal itself that is solely a matter of manufacturing) or a certain wave pattern of excitation of the crystals.

nacelle definition star trek

Ships with two warp nacelles look much better than those with only one nacelle. Yet, there is a more technical explanation for this design rule . An even number of nacelles symmetrical to the ship's centerline obviously serves for better stability and maneuverability. With such a configuration the ship's flight path can easily be changed or corrected through different firing sequences for the two sets of warp coils, thereby generating an angular momentum (the ship's "rudder"). This does not work well with a single, symmetrical nacelle where only the plasma stream can be regulated in order to steer the ship. Warp nacelles are usually not directly attached to the engineering hull in order to provide an optimum shape of the warp field. The blue glowing in the warp nacelle's centerline could be attributed to excess energy flowing back from subspace (see Jason Hinson's website ) which potentially replenishes the warp plasma. By the way, the plasma glowing can be used to distinguish the ships of the various civilizations: Federation - blue, Romulans - green, Klingons - red, Cardassians - yellow, Ferengi - orange, Dominion - violet.

32nd century warp nacelles are often without a physical connection to the ship, for better maneuverability and higher efficiency (DIS: "Scavengers").

Warp power Informal designation for the power generated in the warp core. The warp core provides a much higher power output than the impulse (fusion) reactor (generic).

Warp propulsion system Propulsion system of starships that enables faster-than-light (FTL) travel, also referred to as warp drive. The main components of a Federation warp propulsion system are the matter and antimatter storage, injectors, constriction segments, warp core (M/ARC), warp plasma conduits (power transfer conduits, PTC) and warp coils. The controlled annihilation of antimatter and matter inside a dilithium crystal in the warp core generates the energy necessary for a warp field and also supplies most of the ship's systems. The propulsive warp field is generated by the warp coils. The warp drive was first successfully tested by Zefram Cochrane in 2063, however, other civilizations such as the Vulcans had discovered warp drive a long time ago (generic).

There is a common misconception concerning the function principle of warp propulsion, also shared by Lawrence Krauss ( The Physics of Star Trek ). Warp drive does *not* compress three-dimensional space with a gravitational field so as to reduce the distance to the starship's destination. Official publications such as the STTNG Technical Manual assume that the warp field is a forcefield that manipulates subspace to overcome the relativistic limitations, while normal space is not affected. The warp drive of Cochrane's Phoenix may not yet have been powered by a matter/antimatter reaction, but by a fusion reactor, and Warp 1 was sustained for only some seconds. It is not known how fast technology was developed or adapted after "First Contact" with the Vulcans, however, the S.S. Valiant reached the edge of the galaxy only two years later, according to official Trek history. More about the controversial 21st Century Earth History including the history of warp propulsion.

Warp signature Characteristic pattern of the warp field of a specific ship type, or even of a particular ship. Scans for warp signatures may help track a vessel's course (generic).

Warp sustainer engine Propulsion system of a photon torpedo , allowing warp flight for a short period after the launch (TNGTM) .

Warp trail Wake in subspace that is left behind after the passage of a vessel at warp (generic). See also ion trail .

As opposed to the warp signature, a warp trail seems to be a general distortion of subspace, without a specific pattern.

Warp transport Maneuver of using the transporter while a ship is at warp speed. Usually forbidden under Starfleet regulations except in cases of extreme emergency, the maneuver is rare, although it has been repeatedly performed by the Maquis. Warp transport is only possible from one ship to another whose speeds are exactly matched (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds", "Emissary", VOY: "Maneuvers", TNGTM ). See also near-warp transport .

Trip transferred from Columbia to Enterprise at warp through the shuttlebays, without the help of the transporter, in ENT: "Divergence". The transporter technology was not yet mature enough to allow a safe warp transport. In VOY: "Hope and Fear" beaming the crew away from the Dauntless to Voyager was possible while both ships were in a quantum slipstream.

nacelle definition star trek

Weather modification net Also called weather control net or weather control system. System that monitors and regulates the atmospheric conditions on Federation planets in order to avert natural disasters and, moreover, may create "pleasant" weather according to the inhabitants' wishes (TNG: "True Q", "Sub Rosa", "Force of Nature", DS9: "Let He Who is without Sin", "Honor Among Thieves").

The weather modification net was mentioned in TNG: "True Q". It played a key role in TNG: "Sub Rosa" and DS9: "Let He Who is without Sin", where it turned out to be essential for the well-being of the planets because it didn't only prevent extreme weather situations, but provided a pleasant and, in the case of Risa, sunny weather most of the time. It was called "weather control matrix" in the latter episode.

Wormhole Space-time anomaly that joins two points which may be far apart within normal space. Wormholes are either natural phenomena, or they have been constructed by superior lifeforms or accidentally generated because of warp drive malfunctions. Only one stable wormhole is known, leading from the Bajoran system to the Gamma Quadrant, allowing starships to cross the distance of 90,000 LY in an instant. This wormhole has been artificially constructed by supernatural beings to whom the Bajorans refer as Prophets ("Star Trek: The Motion Picture", TNG: "The Price", DS9, VOY: "False Profits", PIC: "Et in Arcadia Ego II").

Although they are related to black holes , wormholes have not been sighted yet in the real world, but they are theoretically possible. Such wormholes would provide a shortcut through space through a higher dimension or hyperspace. There is no reason why real-life wormholes should generally have moving entries or exits like the Barzan Wormhole (TNG: "The Price") though.

nacelle definition star trek

A nacelle is a large outboard structure that houses a warp-drive engine . The interior of the nacelle is dominated by two rows of massive semi-circular warp-field coils that serve to transform the ship 's drive plasma stream into the subspace field that makes faster-than-light speeds possible. The warp coils create a subspace displacement field, which "warps" the space around the vessel allowing it to "ride" on a spatial distortion, and travel faster than the speed of light.

Nacelles are typically separated from the ship by large pylons, and usually house a bussard collector at the front end. However, some starship configurations have nacelles that are integrated into the ship’s main structure without pylons. A nacelle's interior also includes a small control room, accessible in nominal conditions by a Jefferies tube that permits maintenance and monitoring of the system's operation.

Star Fleet vessels have a varying number of nacelles. Vessels with more than one nacelle can still operate with damaged nacelles, however it will be at reduced warp speeds. The damaged nacelle(s) must be taken offline.

Technical data

The warp coils inside warp nacelles create a subspace displacement field, which "warps" the space around the vessel. This allows the ship to "ride" on the spatial distortion, and travel faster than the speed of light.

Warp coils in the nacelles are fed by plasma conduits from the core of the warp reactor assembly. If the plasma inside was vented, warp drive was impossible until the plasma could be replenished.

Control systems

On older starships, such as the NX-class, the nacelles housed a large catwalk used as a service corridor for nacelle systems. Nacelles aboard the NX -class were required to be polarized for warp travel to be possible. If one of the nacelles were to become depolarized, warp drive would be impossible until repolarization could take place.

Dangers and limitations

Due to the nacelle's function and design, extreme care needs to be taken to protect them from impacts from weapons fire or space debris. Collision with an external object can be disastrous due to a feedback of energy throughout the vessel.

In Constitution Class ships, while the nacelles are powered up, they produce dangerous levels of radiation . Crew members were not permitted to go up the Jefferies tubes that lead to the nacelles inside the nacelle pylons.

Other types

Drive units.

Aside from the "traditional"-looking nacelles, there are several different types and designations, officially known as "warp drive units". On the original Constitution Class shuttlecrafts , their nacelles were circumferential warp nacelles.

Three nacelles

Three-nacelle configurations provide 1/3rd more power to the warp drive, with greater acceleration and faster engagement. Unfortunately, during the first experiments, the third nacelle only accentuated discrepancies in the warp field, which caused dangerous warp vibrations. This affected the steering, and provided a high chance of the ship vibrating itself apart at higher warp speeds.

Nacelle table

The table below explains the type of warp engines and their cruise speeds, maximum sustainable speeds and emergency speeds. All numbers are Warp Factors. [1]

Nacelle tube

Galaxy class nacelle tube (interior)

Inside a standard warp nacelle

The nacelle tube was a space found within a Federation starship warp nacelle used in the maintenance and monitoring of the system's operation.

Aboard the Galaxy -class USS Enterprise -D , the nacelle tube included a small control room, which was found on deck 25 , at the rear of the nacelle, near the plasma injectors . The control room was accessible in nominal conditions by Jefferies tube only and was comprised of two levels, with isolation doors providing access to the interior of the nacelle itself. The isolation doors could be opened with the protection of a one-way force field . The doors, however, could only remain open for ninety seconds to prevent force field degradation and the release of drive plasma.

In 2370 , the starboard nacelle tube control room was manned by Lieutenant Nara and Lieutenant jg Daniel Kwan . On stardate 47622.1 , Kwan committed suicide by jumping through the force field and into the plasma stream, echoing a similar event that occurred during the construction of the ship in 2363 , when Lieutenant jg Walter Pierce committed suicide in a similar manner. ( TNG : " Eye of the Beholder ").

Every Star Trek: Discovery Main Character’s Ending Explained

7 star trek discovery characters who could be mentors on starfleet academy, discovery’s weirdest aliens are perfect for star trek’s next show.

  • Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has the chance to explore new technologies like the pathway drive and programmable matter in the 32nd century.
  • Mentors like Lt. Tilly and potentially Dr. Kovich/Agent Daniels could play a role in shaping the future of Starfleet Academy's cadets.
  • The unresolved storylines from Star Trek: Discovery, such as the fate of Species 10-C and the potential return of the Breen, could be addressed in the new show.

Star Trek: Discovery left several lingering questions that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy needs to answer. Ending after five seasons, Discovery did not have time to wrap up every plot thread from the series. Discovery primarily focused on Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), and the show offered a glimpse of her future with Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) in an emotional epilogue. However, the future remains unknown for many crew members of the USS Discovery. While Starfleet Academy may not be able to answer every lingering question from Discovery, there are some things the show should address.

The USS Discovery's adventures in the 32nd century revealed a lot about the United Federation of Planets in the 32nd century, but Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has the opportunity to dive deeper into the Federation and Starfleet as an organization. Taking place partly at the recently reopened Academy in San Francisco, Starfleet Academy will follow a new group of young cadets as they prepare for their future after the Burn. With Holly Hunter taking on the role of Chancellor of the Academy and Paul Giamatti as an unnamed villain, expectations are already high for Starfleet Academy , and Discovery set up plenty of storylines that Star Trek's next show can continue.

What happened to Captain Michael Burnham & the USS Discovery crew in the Star Trek: Discovery series finale, and where did they end up afterwards?

7 What Is Star Trek: Discovery's Pathway Drive & How Does It Work?

Class title — moving beyond warp drive: starship propulsion 101.

In the year 3069, a cataclysmic event known as the Burn rendered all dilithium inert, destroying many Federation starships and costing millions of lives. The Federation had been looking into alternative sources of propulsion prior to the Burn, but the loss of dilithium made it even more urgent. By the late 32nd century, the Federation had developed an experimental pathway drive that allowed starships to travel faster than warp speed . Although Star Trek: Discovery mentioned this pathway drive several times, the show never actually explained how it worked.

Starfleet outfitted a shuttlecraft with the pathway drive technology for testing and installed it on the USS Voyager-J. Testing appeared to go well, as the Federation decided to pursue the pathway drive as the future of starship propulsion, rather than the USS Discovery's spore displacement hub drive , much to the disappointment of its inventor, Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp). As cadets at the Academy will need to learn about various starship systems as part of their curriculum, Starfleet Academy has the perfect way to explain the pathway drive to audiences, as well.

6 How Do The 32nd Century's Detached Nacelles & Programmable Matter Work?

Class title — programmable matter & its many uses in starfleet.

While the Federation may have been crumbling when the USS Discovery arrived in the 32nd century, their technology had certainly improved over the last 900 years. One of the most interesting and revolutionary 32nd-century tech is programmable matter. From starship consoles to spacesuits, programmable matter can transform into almost anything. This substance is also used to attach the normally detached nacelles of 32nd-century Federation starships .

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 introduced starships with detached parts, like nacelles that were not connected to the main body of the ship. While Discovery did not have time to slow down and explain how this technology worked (or why it was necessary), Starfleet Academy has a built-in way to explain 32nd-century technology to the viewer. As Academy instructors break down this science and technology for their students, the viewer will get a lesson in 32nd-century tech, too.

5 Who Are Starfleet Academy’s Mentors?

Class title — academy mentorship program (required for all cadets).

At the wedding of Ni'Var President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) and Admiral Saru (Doug Jones), Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) revealed her plan to start a mentorship program at Starfleet Academy. Tilly has been heavily involved with the Academy since its reopening after the Burn, and she has been searching for ways to better connect with cadets. Tilly discussed this mentorship program with Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), raising the question of whether the former Captain could act as a mentor.

Star Trek: Discovery's Lt. Sylvia Tilly plans to start a mentorship program at Starfleet Academy, but who should she choose to serve as mentors?

This mentorship program opens the door for many of Star Trek: Discovery's characters to pop up on Starfleet Academy, but it remains to be seen who will join the new show. Characters like Stamets, Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), and even Captain Burnham herself would make great mentors, but many of the USS Discovery's crew members will likely remain with the ship. Still, it doesn't make sense for Starfleet Academy to abandon Discovery's characters entirely, and many of the cadets have undoubtedly heard stories about Discovery and her crew, meaning they would likely jump at the chance to work with them.

4 What's Up With Dr. Kovich/Agent Daniels?

Class title — the temporal wars & the dangers of time travel.

One of the biggest reveals in Star Trek: Discovery's series finale was that the mysterious Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) is actually the time-traveling Agent Daniels, originally played by Matt Winston on Star Trek: Enterprise . This reveal not only further connects Discovery to the greater Trek universe, but also opens up the possibility for Kovich to appear in any Star Trek show, regardless of its place in the timeline. Whether or not Starfleet Academy addresses the Temporal Wars, Kovich should definitely have a presence on the show.

The cadets of Starfleet Academy will reportedly face an enemy that threatens the entire Federation. That seems like a situation that Kovich would want to involve himself in. Kovich could potentially recruit cadets from the Academy for future missions or just stop by to deliver a lecture on the Temporal Wars. Kovich as Daniels also raises questions about how and why he ended up in the 32nd century to begin with, and Starfleet Academy could continue to provide more information about this enigmatic character.

3 What Happens To Moll?

Class title — [redacted] (please see dr. kovich for more information).

Moll (Eve Harlow) may have been a villain in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but she was never presented as evil or unworthy of redemption. During Star Trek: Discovery season 5's finale , Dr. Kovich revealed he has plans for Moll when she gets out of prison, but he gave no hints as to what those plans are. Throughout Discovery season 5, Moll was seen to be highly intelligent and capable, meaning Kovich could want to recruit her for any number of secret missions.

Eve Harlow was a lot of fun as Moll and made her into an incredibly compelling character with an interesting backstory. It would be a shame to lose her after only one season of Star Trek: Discovery.

After the events of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Moll has lost everything, including the love of her life, L'ak (Elias Toufexis). She has the opportunity to begin a new life and Kovich and Starfleet could provide her with that. Moll also has plenty of knowledge and skills that she could teach to Starfleet cadets, particularly those who wish to go into Starfleet Intelligence. Whether or not Moll is directly involved with the Academy cadets or just has a mission on the periphery, Starfleet Academy should reveal something about the former courier's future.

2 Will The Breen Return?

Class title — the breen imperium & us: how breen politics affects the federation.

The Breen loomed on the horizon throughout much of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, until they showed up on the Federation's doorstep in a massive Breen Dreadnought . Since the death of their emperor, the Breen Imperium had become embroiled in a civil war among six different factions. Once Moll told the Primarch Ruhn (Tony Nappo) and his Breen faction about the Progenitors' technology, they wanted it for themselves.

Thankfully, Commander Rayner was able to thwart the Breen in a final battle while Ambassador Saru kept other factions from learning of the Progenitors' tech. Rayner sent the Breen dreadnought to the Galactic Barrier, where it will take them decades to return home. But the other Breen factions are still out there. While Starfleet Academy will likely feature a new villain or villains, cadets should learn about the Breen at the Academy, as they definitely remain a threat.

1 What Happened To Species 10-C?

Class title — species 10-c & other non-humanoid aliens.

A mystery left over from Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Star Trek has yet to reveal what happened to the aliens referred to as Species 10-C. While investigating the Dark Matter Anomaly, Captain Burnham and her crew traveled beyond the Galactic Barrier and encountered the creators of the DMA, Species 10-C. These aliens were very different from most Trek aliens, with an interconnected civilization and a unique way of communicating using hydrocarbons and emotions.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Captain Burnham and her crew met some interesting aliens that would be perfect for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Captain Burnham and her crew managed to communicate with Species 10-C and convince them to stop using planet-destroying mining technology, but then the fascinating aliens were never mentioned again. With their advanced technology and truly alien nature, it seems likely the Federation would want to continue studying Species 10-C. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy provides a perfect opportunity to reveal more about these aliens, perhaps as cadets take a course focused on studying them. At the very least, the show could give the species a real name and properly add them to the roster of cool Star Trek aliens.

What are the dimensions of the nacelles of the Galaxy class starship? James

sojourner

Let me get my ruler....

  • Jul 12, 2010

Let's try this, the nacelles of the Galaxy class starship are not the same width fore and aft, as you move aft the nacelles get wider, "if" the dimensions of the nacelles were known and listed on blueprints would there be 2 measurements for width?

^Sounds like you just answered that.

I wish the blueprints of the E-D had more information as regards dimensions, and other technical information. As it is all there is is a scale ruler at the bottom of each page. (And because my hands tremble slightly I can't use a ruler to get accurate measurement.)

  • Jul 13, 2010

Long ago, I measured out the nacelles as shown in top, side, and bottom views of the Nebula-class from an issue of "Star Trek:The Magazine". Given a length of 442 meters (the actual Nebula length is still a matter of debate), the nacelles came out as 251.5 meters long x 53.1 wide x 32.2 high.

I do have the Galaxy blueprints as well; will take a yardstick to them later on and get back.

OK, here are the stats from the blueprint. It differs a bit from "Starship Spotter", though. Galaxy-class is 641.0 meters long x 465.3 meters wide x 139.4 meters draft (height)...by way of comparison, "Spotter" says 641.0 long x 467.1 wide x 137.5 high. Nacelle measures 251.5 long x 53.1 wide x 32.2 high. Though you didn't ask for them, the other measurements are:Primary hull 367.9 long x 465.3 wide x 59.5 high, and secondary hull 400.9 long x 143.8 wide x 114.5 high. The ship class is 302.4 meters wide across the nacelles at their widest point, and 196.2 meters between the nacelles. Hope this helps.

SicOne said: OK, here are the stats from the blueprint. Click to expand...

^ You are correct, sir; the width I stated are the nacelles at their widest. Additionally, the space between the nacelles that I gave was measured at their most narrow point.

  1. Nacelle

Nacelle covers on the USS Titan-A open up. On Federation starships, warp nacelles are usually built to house Bussard ramscoops at the fore end, primarily used for collecting hydrogen and other interstellar particles from open space to replenish fuel. (SNW: "Lost in Translation"; Star Trek: Insurrection) Some Federation nacelles are designed to allow the warp field grills to open up, and ...

A nacelle (/ n ə ˈ s ɛ l / nə-SEL) is ... In Star Trek it is also used as a term for the housing containing coils that generate the warp field. This is separate to the engine that powers them. You can see the same design concept in Klingon, Romulan, and Ferengi ships to name a few. This design was not universally followed by all Star Trek ships, but many or most of the ships in the original series and the Next Generation did follow this design principle. Voyager can't go to warp until the nacelles have direct line of sight with each ...

  4. Warp drive

Warp drive. A warp drive or a drive enabling space warp is a fictional superluminal (faster than the speed of light) spacecraft propulsion system in many science fiction works, most notably Star Trek, [1] and a subject of ongoing physics research. The general concept of "warp drive" was introduced by John W. Campbell in his 1957 novel Islands ...

  5. FSD: Starship Operations

A vessel's warp engine relies on three distinct elements; a matter-antimatter reaction assembly (commonly known as the warp core), power transfer conduits, and warp nacelles. The warp core not only produces power for the ship's propulsion systems, but acts as the vessel's main power generator, supplying energy to all the ship's systems.

  6. Warp nacelle

A warp nacelle is an outboard structure found on warp capable vessels. Vessels with warp drive will typically have two or more nacelles, although some vessels function with a single nacelle. A warp nacelle has also been referred to as a warp pontoon, especially on starship classes that lacked pylons such as the Danube-class or the Nebula-class, due to the visual similarity to the pontoon ...

  9. Nacelle

A nacelle is a large outboard structure that houses a warp-drive engine. The interior of the nacelle is dominated by two rows of massive semi-circular warp-field coils that serve to transform the ship's drive plasma stream into the subspace field that makes faster-than-light speeds possible. The warp coils create a subspace displacement field, which "warps" the space around the vessel allowing ...

  10. Serious question about warp nacelles : r/startrek

By definition, the Defiant does NOT have nacelles. To be clear, the literal definition of the word "Nacelle" is: A streamlined housing or tank for something on the outside of an aircraft or motor vehicle. The defiant has nacelles they are just built onto the sides of the ship instead of on pylons.

  13. Nacelle "Line of Sight": Canon or Not?

Fleet Captain. Oct 21, 2017. #1. It's never been stated in any episode or movie, but the concept behind nacelles is that they work in concert with each other to generate a warp field (hence why there's always more than one) and supposedly require line of sight to work with each other. Andy Probert is a firm believer in this premise.

  14. The benefits of detached nacelles : r/DaystromInstitute

Detached nacelles would get you the benefits of a variable design without the problems of engineering a gigantic movable part expected to last 50-100 years. The second possibility is the internal model production rules for line of sight when designing Star Fleet ships. The nacelles are supposed to be in line of sight of each other.

  15. How would detached Nacelles work?

The detached nacelle works by slight motions that change the variable geometry of the warp field. Instead of changing the subspace displacement output by each nacelle to turn or exiting warp and readjusting course, you'd just vector the nacelles differently.

  16. Nacelle tube

The nacelle tube was originally conceived of by "Eye of the Beholder" writer Brannon Braga as a long catwalk that ran the length of the nacelle. While the set was ultimately constructed as a two-level room, augmented with a matte painting, the catwalk eventually appeared in Star Trek: Enterprise in the appropriately-titled episode "The Catwalk".While not explicitly stated in dialogue, the ...

I spent weeks drawing and redrawing the nacelles. The front end of them is almost a 1940 Ford grill. (Star Trek: Creating the Enterprise, 1st ed, pp. 103-104) and. In regard to the nacelles, Taylor has added, "The Nacelles were the most difficult part of the design of the Enterprise.

  20. Do the number of nacelles make any difference in ship speed?

The USS Prometheus was the only ship which was apparently designed and able to withstand Warp 9.9 as a cruising speed (apart from this vessel, no other SF ship was able to reach/sustain these speeds reliably) and it had 5 nacelles. Six. The saucer had a second nacelle in the area the middle section fit into, below the one behind the bridge.

  21. 7 Discovery Questions Star Trek's Next Show Must Answer
