On Sunday, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey had called on Shah here and is believed to have discussed the prevailing situation in the Northeastern state.

Ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023 after a tribal solidarity march in the hill districts of the state to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Since then, over 220 people belonging to both Kuki and Meitei communities and security personnel have been killed in the continuing violence.

Festive offer

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mainly in the hill districts.

On June 10, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat expressed concern over peace eluding Manipur even after one year and said the situation in the strife-torn north eastern state must be considered with priority.

Addressing a gathering of RSS trainees in Nagpur, he said, “Manipur is waiting for peace for the last one year. There was peace in Manipur 10 years ago. It felt like gun culture had finished there. But the state has suddenly seen violence”.

Bhagwat said the situation in Manipur will have to be considered with priority and there is need to get over election rhetoric and focus on problems facing the nation.

“The unrest either got triggered or was triggered, but Manipur is burning and people are facing its extreme heat”, the RSS chief had said.

Union Minister for tourism Kishan Reddy opens 10-day Manipur Sangai Festival

The festival will boost tourism in manipur, reddy says.

After two years, the Manipur Sangai Festival is back with Union Minister for culture, tourism and development of north eastern region (DoNER) Gangapuram Kishan Reddy opening the 10-day-long tourism festival at its main venue at Sangai Ethnic Park at Moirang Khunou in Bishnupur district on Monday.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, ministers, MLAs, top officials of the state government were among others who attended the opening function of the tourism festival.

Addressing the opening function of the festival being held under the theme ‘Festival of Oneness’, G Kishan Reddy hoped that the hosting of the festival will boost tourism industry of the state.

The festival, one day, will become the country's biggest tourism event that attracts tourists from across the globe, Reddy said.

Image

He highlighted various tourism attraction centres of the state like the floating Keibul Lamjao National Park -the home of the Sangai deer, Loktak Lake –the biggest fresh water lake in India, Ima Keithel - iconic all-women-run market, etc. and said that these places were unique places in the globe.

Indian citizens used to visit Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, Africa, etc. However, now a day, country’s tourists need no more visiting these places.

“More beautiful places are in Manipur and the north-east region. Manipur, the pride of Northeast India, is ever-blooming as a tourist destination. I can say it proudly,” the Union minister said.

Reddy said that besides these unique places, Manipur has its rich cultural heritage while mentioning the famous Ras Lila, the classical dance of Manipur among others.

In his speech on the occasion, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said that the festival is being organized on the theme of “oneness” and it will not only bring unity among the different communities of Manipur but also strengthen the integrity of India.

Singh hoped that the Sangai Ethnic Park where the opening function of the festival is being held will create the sense of belongingness among the different ethnic communities living together in the state.

The ethnic park is being built to host the Sangai Festival which is an annual event and huts representing different tribal groups of the state would be set up in the park.

The park was inaugurated by the chief minister earlier in the day, before the opening of the festival.

While highlighting various features of the festival, the chief minister informed that the state government has spruced up the security of tourists visiting major tourist attractions by setting up the “tourism police”.

The state home department set up the tourism police and it will be deployed at tourist places.

They will take special care of the safety and convenience of the tourists. This will make the tourists visiting the state feel safer and better, the chief minister said.

The Sangai Festival is an annual cultural-cum-tourism festival of Manipur. It has been held from November 21 to 30 every year since 2010.

However, it was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is back this year with the pandemic situation improved.

Unlike the previous years in which its venues were concentrated in Imphal only, the festival is being held in as many as 13 venues across the hills and valley districts of the state.

"Stop Violence": N Biren Singh Urges People As Unrest Hits Manipur Tourism

Over 180 people have died and thousands have been internally displaced since the ethnic violence began on May 3 in the northeastern state.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh urged people to start a peaceful dialogue to end the ethnic crisis.

Stating that tourism in the state has reduced by 10-20 per cent, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has appealed to the people to stop violence and start a peaceful dialogue to end the ethnic crisis.

"We cannot deny (tourism) is little affected. But particularly in the Imphal area and other parts of the hills except two districts, normalcy is there. But (tourism) has reduced by 10-20 per cent.

During the crisis time, even in the Imphal valley, security vehicles were not allowed to move. We have to take some time because all are our people. We cannot use force against them. Slowly, normalcy is returning. We have to convince the people," he said, addressing a press conference here.

On being asked about the violence in Manipur in the year 2023, the CM said that "we should not count 8 months" as there were 4-5 months when there was no crisis in the state.

"From May 3, you are counting 8 months but for 4-5 months, there was no crisis. Everything was peaceful. We should not count 8 months but only the time when the crisis took place. Problem-solving takes time. But in the meantime, I want to appeal to all the citizens of the country, particularly those in Manipur, to stop violence and start peaceful dialogue. We have to live together. We have to resettle the displaced person in their respective places. Children have to go to school," he added.

The ethnic violence involving the Kuki and Meitei communities erupted after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3. With the violence and rioting persisting and many lives lost, the Centre had to deploy paramilitary forces to restore peace in the state.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court asked the Manipur government to furnish to the court-appointed committee the details about the steps it had taken to restore the places of worship that had been destroyed in the ethnic violence.

Meanwhile, Assam Rifles, in a joint search operation with Manipur police, recovered arms and ammunition in the general area of Kouburu Ridge in Noney district on Saturday, according to an official statement.

Based on inputs about the presence of arms and ammunition, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police launched a joint search operation on December 23.

A detailed joint search of the general area was carried out, leading to the recovery of one AK 56 rifle, one single-barrel gun, ammunition, six grenades and war-like stores, according to the release.

Manipur Tourism Minister Oinam Lukhoi on Monday said the Centre has given its approval, in principle, to sanction Rs 1,350 crore for the development of Loktak Lake into a world-class tourist destination.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest during the celebration of the World Tourism Day, 2021 held at the Ramrei Eco-Tourism Park, Ramrei Village in Kamjong district.

Once the development work is completed, Loktak Lake will be a hot-spot for the tourist from all over the globe, as it is the destination to one and only floating national park in the world, said the minister.

He informed that the average number of international tourists visiting the state is around 2,000-3000 per month and domestic tourists around 12,000 per month.

In addition, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the development of various tourism projects have also been submitted to the Centre for approval, he said, adding that once approved works will be taken up in full swing.

Citing the state’s limited resources, Lukhoi said the state has to fully rely on the Centre to develop the tourism sector.

“Manipur is blessed with various natural beauties both in the hills and valley. I appeal to the public to support the government’s initiative to boost the tourism sector in the state”, said Lukhoi.

The minister also assured the villagers of Ramrei of developing necessary infrastructures of the Ramrei Eco-Tourism Park.

Advisor to chief minister (Health) S Ranjan said uplifting the tourism sector is both profitable to the government as well as to the local populace.

He assured that the sacrifice made by the villagers of Chadong and its surrounding villages in the construction of the Mapithal Dam will not go in vain.

As a part of the celebration, the tourism minister also flagged-off a cycle rally from the venue of the programme.
