One of the must-see spots you wouldn’t want to miss in Dinagat Islands is its mystical Lake Bababu. It is a meromictic lake, which contains both saltwater and freshwater. Another interesting thing about the lake is its 650-meter long and 2,200-feet deep underwater cave, the longest one in the Philippines. It connects scuba divers from the lake to the open sea.

After your lake exploration, you can lounge on the pristine white sand of Bitaog Beach. Then, you can go island-hopping to the nearby islets. Up next is Cabacungan Cove, which boasts turquoise-colored waters surrounded by towering coconut trees and limestone cliffs.

Tawi-Tawi is the southernmost province in the Philippines located in the southwestern Sulu archipelago between the Celebes Sea and the Sulu Sea. It is considered as one of the most off-beaten spots destinations in the country. Among all of its tourist spots, Panampangan Island is undeniably its most stunning attraction.

The sacred building is the initiative of Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom of the Datu Saudi Ampatuan town who happens to have chosen pink as his favorite color.

Pink represents peace, harmony, and love. Likewise, the people of Datu Saudi Ampatuan believe that the mosque will bring them unity and brotherhood. Inspired by the mosque’s color and design, the town’s municipal hall, police stations, and public market are also set to be repainted pink. When you enter the town, you will also be greeted by the pink flags lined on the sidewalks.

Mosques serve as a place for worship for Muslims around the world. Its magnificent interiors also draw tourists to countries like the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Turkey. The Pink Mosque is a perfect example of a mosque that turned into an attraction. 

Emerged from the shifting tides off the coast of Mambajao, Camiguin is a powdery white sandbar known as White Island. It is also called the Naked Temptress due to its immaculate white sands and crystal clear blue waters. Although the sandbar is originally boomerang-shaped, it changes its form every year depending on the tides.

Camiguin Island is also known as the Island Born of Fire due to its volcanic origin. At White Island, you will see the panoramic view of one out of seven volcanoes in Camiguin. Mount Hibok-Hibok is an active stratovolcano alongside a smaller volcano known as Mount Vulcan or the island’s last-formed volcano.

In 2018, Tinuy-an Falls is proclaimed as one of the three protected areas of the Caraga region. It is home to 91 species of animals, including amphibians, birds, reptiles, freshwater fish, and more. There are also 144 species of flora and 33 of which are nearing extinction.

Situated in South Cotabato or the Land of the Dreamweavers, Lake Sebu is a major watershed recognized as a UNESCO cultural landscape in Mindanao. It irrigates the provinces of Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato. There are three lakes in the area: Lake Sebu, Lake Seloton, and Lake Lahit. There is truly something magical about the beauty of Enchanted River. Just the view of its blue, crystal-clear water will make you will like you’re in a fairy tale setting.

Located in the quiet town of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur, the Enchanted River remains a mystery. Its true depth remains unknown, although divers have attempted to explore it in the past. Currently, it is open to tourist who wish to see its beauty in person.

Although the main pool is closed to the public for preservation, there is a designated area for swimming just a few meters away. There you can enjoy refreshing water and snorkel to see the schools of fishes underneath. Make sure to stay for the fish feeding done every afternoon.

Ahhh, the colorful city of Zamboanga City. If you’re on a journey to explore the best tourist spots in Mindanao, then you should consider staying here for a few days at least. There are so many things to do in Zamboanga City that days go by so quickly!

Zamboanga City is the third-largest city in the Philippines and the commercial center in the south. It’s also the gateway to the nearby provinces of Basilan and Tawi-Tawi . It is home to interesting local attractions such as Fort Pilar, Yakan Weaving Village, and Paseo del Mar. You can also visit its local food hubs to taste local cuisine rooted from indigenous culture, Malaysian- or Spanish-influenced heritage dishes, and fresh seafood such as the famous curacha with alavar sauce.

There are many things to do in Lake Sebu. One of course is to meet the Tbolis and learn their way of living and their culture, art, and dances. Another spot for beach lovers, White Island is a white-sand sandbar surrounded by clear blue waters, located a few minutes from the mainland in Camiguin. It is originally boomerang shaped, but its shape changes along with the tide every year.

White Island is a great place to beach bum, swim, and take pictures. Though there are no establishments here, there are umbrellas you can rent for shade and vendors selling fresh sea urchin and cool drinks for refreshment.

Location: Cagayan de Oro

Lake Holon is ideal for those who love adventure. It is challenging to trek here, and you need to be physically fit to go. The route requires trekking in the mountains to reach the view deck, where you can see the entirety of the lake, before descending to the lakeside community where the camping site is located.

Once in the campsite, you can enjoy the tranquility of the lake area. It’s also a nice experience to mingle with the locals and get to know their culture and lifestyle, swim and kayak at at the lake, and do stargazing at the clear, night sky. Location: North Cotabato

Asik-Asik Falls is a stunning sight to behold — streams of water running down a verdant mountain cliff, looking straight out of a storybook. This is definitely one of the top tourist spots in Mindanao that you should see for yourself!

This waterfall derived its name from the Hiligaynon word asik-asik (“sprinkle sprinkle”). It was already known by the locals but was only discovered by the public when a photo of it was submitted in a national geography contest in 2012. Since then, it has been one of the best tourist attractions in North Cotabato.

There is no water basin in Asik-Asik Falls, but you can sit in a boulder under the streams for a waterfall shower or swim in the river that runs beneath it.

Magpupungko Rock Pools was a popular swimming hole for locals. Over the years, it has risen to become one of the top attractions in Siargao.

Here you can find gorgeous natural pools surrounded by interesting rock formations. The water is so clear and refreshing that you’ll immediately want to dive in!

Magpupungko Rock Pools is located inside a resort. It has a modest in-house restaurant where you can buy food and drinks. Make sure to time your visit here because the tidal pool is only visible during low tide.

Sugba Lagoon is a beautiful lagoon with a floating cottage and restaurant, a diving board where you can jump directly to the water, and watersport rental facilities including kayak and paddleboard. Location: Bucas Grande, Surigao del Norte

Sohoton Cove National Park is an otherworldly maze of lush islets and caves. It’s only an hour away from Siargao by boat, making it easily accessible as a day or overnight trip.

Here you can kayak in the Blue Lagoon with its clear blue water, venture deep in Crystal Cave or dive underwater to get inside Hagukan Cave, or take a dinghy into the stingless jellyfish lake. Don’t forget to visit the floating restaurant for delicious seafood and Filipino meals to replenish yourself during your adventure.

Location: Davao del Sur and North Cotabato

Rising over 2965 MASL, Mount Apo is considered the highest mountain in the Philippines. It spans across the provinces of Davao del Sur and North Cotabato.

Mount Apo features different landscapes, from streams and swamps to mossy forests and rocky terrains. Only experienced mountain climbers are advised to go here, as it is considered a major climb with a difficulty of 7/9. The climb from the trailhead to the summit and back usually takes 3 days.

Location: Davao Oriental

The Philippines features countless beautiful beaches, and one of them is Dahican Beach in Davao. It features a crescent-shaped shoreline and big waves that make it popular among surfers and skimboarders. The Sunken Cemetery is one of the top tourist attractions in Camiguin Island . Here you can see a unique vista — a giant white cross standing above the sea. It is said the the cross marks the resting place of the island’s first settles who were buried alive during the eruption of Mount Vulcan in the 1870s.

Location: Zamboanga City

The Great Sta. Cruz Island, also known as the Pink Beach of Zamboanga , is a must-visit for beach lovers around the world. It is one of the few pink-sand beaches in the Philippines, whose color is caused by the presence of crushed red corals mixed with the sand.

This island is a great day trip from the city. It’s easily accessible, as it only requires a 15- to 20-minute boat ride from the port.

Once at the island, feel free to take a break with the scenic view, take pictures of the colorful vintas (traditional boats), or swim at the crystal-clear beach. There is also a nearby mangrove area where you can kayak and an underwater snorkel spot open for snorkeling and diving.

Location: Basilan

It takes an hour to reach the summit of Bud Bongao. A scenic view of the town including the bridge connecting two islands can be seen from above. It’s also a great place to view sunsets.

Location: Sulu

Jolo is the capital of Sulu Province , one of the most underrated destinations in the Philippines. It’s one of the best Mindanao tourist spots to visit for backpackers and those who love exploring off-the-beaten-track destinations.

The main charm of this coastal town is in its unique food, culture, and architecture. Here you can taste its local delicacies (such as the bangbang, a set of Tausug pastries), stroll along the local market, and visit the capitol and church. You can also take a boat trip to discover the islands in Panglima Tahil , which are some of the most beautiful and pristine islands in the country. There are also white-sand beach destinations nearby that can easily rival the kinds of Boracay.

Take note that visits in Sulu should be coordinated with the local tourism office first.

Location: Iligan City, Lanao del Norte

Tinago Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Philippines that you can find. Don’t be deceived by its name though — Tinago Falls (which translates to Hidden Falls) is far from being a secret. In fact, it’s one of the most famous attractions in Illigan City in Mindanao, visited by locals who want to witness its magnificence.

This waterfall is about 420 feet high, with a wide basin filled with deep-cold water where you can swim to your heart’s content. Around the waterfall are food stalls and tables where you can rest and eat while appreciating the waterfall view. There are also rafts that can take you to the stream itself, so you can experience bathing underneath the falls.

Aliwagwag Falls is a sight to behold. It stands at about 1100 feet with over 80 tiers, making it the highest waterfall in the Philippines.

This is a great place to swim and enjoy the nature. For more adventure, you can ride the 680-meter long zipline across the waterfall and cross the monkey bridge where you can view the rushing waterfalls below.

Aside from being a tourist attraction in Davao, this waterfall also provides water for irrigation to the surrounding rice fields and renewable hydropower to local communities.

Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site found in San Isidro, Davao Oriental. It features interesting landscapes, including a pygmy forest — one of the few existing in the world. It’s also home to various flora and fauna, some of which is endemic to the area, as well as the Philippine Eagle, Philippine Cockatoo, and more.

Reaching the summit and back requires a 3-day trek. If the activity is not for you, you can instead visit the Mount Hamiguitan Natural Science Museum instead or arrange for a day trip to the waterfalls and natural pools in the surrounding forest.

For those who are interested in wildlife conservation, The Philippine Eagle Center is one of the tourist spots in Mindanao that you should include in your itinerary.

The Philippine Eagle Center is a wildlife breeding center located at the foothills of Mount Apo in Davao City. Spanning 8.4 hectares, it aims to provide shelter to the Philippine Eagle, which is considered an endangered species. It’s also home to other birds, macaques, and crocodiles.

The center offers a free guided tour to the facilities. You can also ask for a falconry demonstration to see the birds in flight or schedule a Keeper Talk to know more about the center, their work, and the eagles.

The Eden Nature Park is a recreational park located at the southern end of Davao City. It’s a place for families or friends to relax and unwind, enjoy the mountain views, and of course engage in various outdoor activities.

A diving adventure in Palawan

Whether you want to sunbathe and surf or experience something more adventurous, there are plenty of things to do in Mindanao. These are the best:

#1 Go whitewater rafting on the Cagayan de Oro River

Whitewater rafting along the fourteen major rapids of the Cagayan de Oro River gained popularity after former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took a ride here in 2002.

The jumping-off point is at the barangay of Mambuaya, a thirty- to forty-minute ride from the city proper. The wet months (Sept and Oct) are best for intermediate and professional levels (when the rapids range from class 3 to 4), while the rest of the year is more suitable for beginners.

#2 Get a taste of lanzones in Camiguin

Visit this dazzling little island in October, when the colourful four-day Lanzones festival is held. Held in the fourth week of October, revellers dressed only in lanzones leaves (a tropical fruit) stomp and dance in the streets as a tribute to the humble fruit, one of the island’s major sources of income. It's a vibrant and good-natured outdoor party.

#3 Be wowed by the Enchanted River

This magical, remote lagoon is a deep cove of crystalline water crammed with colourful tropical fish – a visual delight. Swimming in the Enchanted River is one of the highlights of a trip to Mindanao.

The accessible part of the river is more like a narrow saltwater lagoon that ends at an underwater cave and ravine crammed with all sorts of tropical fish that get fed every day at noon.

The colours are mesmerizing; the water glows like liquid sapphire, surrounded by dense jungle and karst outcrops. The site is managed as a small park, but it’s well off the beaten path, and few foreign tourists make it this far.

#4 Check out the backpacking scene on Siargao Island

Off the northeastern tip of Mindanao lies the teardrop-shaped island of Siargao, on of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines . It's a largely undeveloped backwater with languid beaches, dramatic coves and lagoons battered by the Pacific Ocean.

Some of the first tourists here were surfers, who discovered a Pacific reef break at Tuason Point – so good, they called it Cloud 9. Though old-timers now dub it “Crowd 9” because of its popularity, there is a friendly, welcoming surfing scene here.

Siargao gives Malapascua and Panglao a run for their money as the backpacker capital of the southern Philippines .

The annual Surfing Cup, usually held in late September or early October, attracts international competitors from Australia, the US and Europe, as well as from around the Philippines

#5 Get clued up at the Museum of Three Cultures

The Museum of Three Cultures is devoted to the Christians, Muslims and seven Indigenous traditions (or “Lumad”) of northern Mindanao.

The first gallery is dedicated to this history, with exhibits on the Huluga Caves, early trade with China and the Butuan boats.

The most interesting section is dedicated to the M’ranao 9 of Marawi, an area at the heart of the Moro dispute. Exhibits cover Islamic brass work, giant ceremonial swords and traditional torogan-style houses.

#6 Get your thrills at Dahilayan Adventure Park

Billed as Mindanao’s most extreme playground, the Dahilayan Adventure Park makes for an entertaining day out, primarily for its long zipline and refreshingly cool alpine location, in the hills some 1370m above sea level.

The Dahilayan Zip Zone comprises three ziplines: an exhilarating 320m section, a tamer 150m segment, and the 840m finale, where you are chained into a full-body harness before hurtling down the mountain at 90km/hour. There’s also whitewater rafting – either come with a group or call in advance and they should be able to place you in a boat (minimum six).

#7 Gawp at Maria Cristina Falls

The most impressive cascade in the region, and located within the NPC Nature Park, the Maria Cristina Falls serves as the main source of power for much of Mindanao.

The twin falls (named after two heartbroken girls who are supposed to have jumped from the top), plunge 100m into the torrential Agus River, and are at their best on Saturday and Sunday at 11am, when the Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant upstream releases the most water. There is a zipline here, too.

#8 Sunbathe on White Island

About halfway between Mambajao and Bonbon, off the island’s northwest coast, lies one of Camiguin’s most popular attractions, White Island, a dazzling serpentine ribbon of sand only visible at low tide and easily reached by bangka from Yumbing.

The views and the water are gorgeous, but there’s no shade, so make sure that you take lots of sunblock.

#9 Surf Cloud 9 (Tuason Point)

Sleep, eat, surf: that’s the mantra 2km further north from GL at Cloud 9, the world-renowned break at Tuason Point. On most days, from sunrise to sundown, you’ll find surfers in action: beach bums previously watched from the multi-storey wooden viewing pavilion in front of the break, and will no doubt do so again once it is rebuilt following its destruction in Typhoon Odette.

The peak surf season is September and October before things slow down at the end of the year; beginners will find the weaker surf in June and July more manageable.

Both Camiguin and Siargao have an array of different options, from quality hostels and identikit business hotels to luxurious beachside resorts. For an authentic night's kip, book a rural homestay. There are the best places to stay in Mindanao.

Cagayan de Oro and around

Full of identikit downtown hotels, cheapie business stays and some half-decent midrange options . The high-end hotels tend to be newer here.

Iligan and around

Kitschy complexes with pools and reliable national chains. There are decently priced, if unimaginative, hotels in and around Iligan. It’s unlikely to be the standout accommodation of your trip.

Camiguin Island

Most of the seaside accommodation in Camiguin is west of Mambajao on the beaches between the small towns of Bug-ong and Naasag. Resorts near the town of Agoho, a little west of Bug-ong, remain popular due to their easy access to White Island. East of Mambajao, around the village of Balgabon, you’ll find more resorts, although the beach here isn’t as good as at Agoho, Yumbing or Naasag.

Surigao City

There's a bit of luxury here with the Almont which offers good rooms with sensational views of the bay. Else it's smart modern business hotels, a couple of boutique options, and some okay B&Bs.

Siargao Island

Siargao accommodation ranges from low-budget surf lodges to upmarket tropical resorts. Most places are a short distance from GL or Cloud 9, and the best can help arrange motorbike rentals, bangka trips and all kinds of tours.

From the gleaming, multi-storey hotels to 1950s-era heritage houses, Davao has the lot. There are some great upmarket hotels here as well as value-for-money a/c backpacker dorms in hostels.

Away from the cities, expect to have decent pizzas, curries, burgers and the like served at your resort. In Davao and Cagayan de Oro, though, there are endless opportunities to eat out.

Cagayan de Oro

Head to the Rosario Arcade or the Ayala Centrio Mall for a vast selection of restaurants and takeaway food. As well as Filipino classics, there are numerous Western outlets in the city too.

Eating on Camiguin is mostly limited to the resorts, but a few new standout restaurants have opened in recent years. Like everywhere else in the Philippines, there’s an inexplicable number of Italian pizzerias and restaurants, while in Mambajao, there’s a cluster of cheap places to eat around the market area.

Burgers, pizzas, curries and seafood are all available throughout this busy city with the best food generally serve on the seafront. There are some great places to try Filipino food too.

Most of the best places to eat and drink are in the resorts, but a number of independent places have opened over the past few years. Everywhere is lively during peak season, particularly during the Surfing Cup, when various places on Cloud 9 put on live music.

Davao’s best restaurants are scattered all over the city, but the safest bet for a cheap meal are the food courts located in or around the shopping malls. Durian fruit is a big deal in Davao, and is available in every form, from durian ice cream to durian-flavoured cappuccino. The best season for the fruit is Sept–Dec.

The best way to get to Mindanao is by flying into Cagayan de Oro, which has domestic and international flights.

Laguindingan International Airport is 33km northwest of Cagayan de Oro – about an hour’s drive. The airport is accessible by jeepney (first to the Laguindingan turnoff, then take the shuttle to the airport), but the most convenient transfers are with LAX Shuttle, which picks up at the Centrio Ayala Mall, or with Magnum Express, which leaves from Magnum Radio in CM Recto.

The Eastbound bus terminal is near the Limketkai Center, 3km east of the centre (off Recto Ave), while the Westbound Bus and Jeepney Station lie 6km west of the centre on the Iligan road.

If you want to explore the entire island, you may need several weeks in Mindanao, or even a month. However, if you have limited time, it's possible to experience some of the highlights in around two weeks.

This would include Davao, tackling Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, and stopping in at the Philippine Eagle Center. It would also mean surfing and sunbathing in Siargao Island, seeing the waterfalls, hot springs, and historical landmarks of Camiguin and going white-water rafting in Bukidnon.

Most locals use tricycles in the larger cities, but there are a number of ways to get around Mindanao, which are affordable and easy. Note that choices for getting around Siargao are fairly limited.

By tricycle

Most locals use tricycles to get around the cities like C AND D (6am–10pm). Tricycles will often quote high charges to tourists.

Jeepneys are easy to pick up and typically run back and forth along all major thoroughfares in cities with their destinations pasted on the side – it’s just a question of flagging one down and hopping on.

A/C taxis can take you around town or on tours to most local sights. There are also non-a/c “PU” taxis which run fixed routes for a set rate. They are both cheap and easy to use. Hail them in the street and check the meter is turned on.

By habal-habal

Most locals use the habal-habals, good for up to two people and light luggage; the vehicles are customized with retro-fitted carry racks for long- and shortboards. Rates are fixed, so you shouldn’t need to negotiate.

By motorbike rental

If you intend to do a lot of roaming around, having your own wheels is definitely recommended. Ask your accommodation about renting a motorcycle.

The best time to visit Mindanao is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During these months, the weather is generally warm and sunny, making it an ideal time for beach activities, hiking, and other outdoor adventures. However, it's worth noting that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.

The months of May to November mark the rainy season in Mindanao, and while the rainfall may not be constant throughout these months, it's best to avoid visiting during this time. The wet season can lead to landslides and flooding, making it difficult to travel around and enjoy the island's attractions fully.

Overall, the best time to visit Mindanao is during the dry season from December to April. However, if you're looking for a more budget-friendly trip with fewer crowds, visiting during the shoulder season months of May and November can still offer a great experience with the added bonus of lush, green landscapes.

Majestic and breathtaking – that’s how travelers describe Mindanao’s top nature spots and hidden gems. Being the second largest island group next to Luzon , Mindanao has been dubbed the country’s ‘Land of Promise’ for its untapped, promising natural resources. It has become globally known for being home to the surf capital of the country, a famous highly-urbanized city, and jaw-dropping beaches.

Brief history and culture.

Mindanao is known to have the largest Muslim community and diverse native ethnic groups in the country. Because the area is near to the countries of Malaysia and Indonesia, historical accounts mention that Muslim, Hindu and Buddhism influence were very prominent during the early times of Mindanao because of neighboring migrants. The term ‘ Mindanao ‘ was coined after the largest group which settled in the area – ‘ Maguindanaos.’ While Sultanates were among the first to establish their presence, they were soon converted into Islam because of the Muslim migrants who displaced the non-Muslim natives.

Apart from Muslims, Malaysians and Indonesians, some inhabitants of Mindanao are also of Indian, Arab, or Chinese descent. It won’t be sufficient to pinpoint a prevailing culture because the island is rich in diversity and various origins, temperaments and religions are present. There are remnants of Spanish settlement in the northwestern peninsula, whereas Sultanates are found in the southwestern part, for instance.

While the Visayans ‘ Cebuano language is widely-spoken in Mindanao, there are also dialects spoken in other areas such as Chavacano, Hiligaynon, and Illonggo. There are also ethnic minority groups such as T’boli, Maranao, Bagobo, and Manobo living in the area.

Natural features and climate

Mainly characterized by narrow coastal plains, peninsulas, and faulted mountains, Mindanao has a range of tropical rainforests and great biodiversity. Some of the world’s largest pineapples, bananas, and pomelos are grown here. There are also abundant mineral resources and the area takes pride in its rich variety of fish, corals, and pearls, wherein the finest pearls are found in Sulu City in Mindanao.

The best time to travel to Mindanao is during the months of March to May, where it’s generally summertime in the country.

Mindanao travel guide

Mindanao, the large island in the Philippines' far south, has long been associated with insurgency, but this appears to be a thing of the past –  a major breakthrough in 2012 should signal the arrival of this beautiful island as a tourist destination. Highlights include Mt Apo , the loftiest peak in the country, the tropical beaches of Samal Island near Davao , and the towering Aliwagwag waterfall. The island has exceptional hiking and trekking opportunities, scuba diving and white-water action not far from the booming city of Davao.

Indigenous tribes range across Mindanao, occupying huts that stand on stilts above the ground, where wild animals may otherwise attack, or over the water in seafaring regions. Some indigenous groups follow Islam and mosques may outnumber Catholic churches in southwestern towns as locals adhere to the religion introduced about 800 years ago, before the Spanish arrived.

Places to see in Mindanao

This city of 1.5 million people, in the northernmost part of Davao del Sur Province, is booming with hotels, malls, and housing projects. Downtown, compact compared to its peers Manila and Cebu, is a pedestrian-friendly mix of malls, university buildings, and street-side diners. 

In verdant hills, just 15 minutes from town, is the regionally famous Davao Crocodile Park ( www.davaocrocodilepark.com ). Several sizeable enclosures show the reptile in different stages of growth, including dozens of 60cm (2ft) -long juveniles sunning themselves en masse in the heavily fenced compound replete with a variety of palms offering cool shade. Pangil, a 6-meter (19ft) -long crocodile is the star of the mini zoo that also comes with tigers, toucans, native deer, and a civet. Buloy, a 3.3-meter (11ft) -long albino Indian python is tame enough to put on one’s shoulders for photographs.

Aliwagwag Falls

Near the town of Cateel on Mindanao's east coast are the towering Aliwagwag Falls. At 340 meters (1,110ft) high and 20 meters (65ft) wide, these are the highest falls in the country, comprising a series of 84 falls appearing like a stairway, with each step ranging from 2–34 meters (6–110ft). 

In the depths of Mindanao soars Mount Apo, the highest Philippine peak, challenging outdoor enthusiasts to scale its full 2,956 meters (9,700ft). 

Now a national park, the massif encompasses a 72,800-hectare (180,000-acre) base of lush tropical rainforest, boiling mineral springs, sulfur vents, lakes, and waterfalls. The only recorded eruption was in 1640. All physical indications, however, point to continuing volcanic activity deep below.

A trail from the launch point follows the Marbel River canyon. Trekkers have a chance of seeing monkeys, wild pigs, and the endangered Philippine eagle as they hike through the jungles past Lake Venado. Another route, the Kidapawan Trail, jumps off at the continuously boiling Lake Agco, passing through a part of the Marbel river, the Mainit Hot Spring, and Malou Shi Waterfalls. Atop awaits an unobstructed panoramic view of the whole of Mindanao.

A guide is required. The guides, who may also work as porters, run three-day and four-day trips from Davao to the summit. Trekkers – or their outfitters – should bring tents, stoves, and hiking poles. 

Camiguin Island

Off the north central coast of Mindanao, the small island of Camiguin is home to laid-back resorts and white sand beaches, steep volcanoes, jungles, waterfalls, and natural springs both hot and cold..

Rent a motorcycle or scooter to explore. The 64km (40-mile) loop road and all of the roads that lead off it offer unlimited potential for exploring an area with the highest number of volcanoes per square kilometer of any island on the planet.

Head south along the highway to see the ruins of Gui-ob Church. Loll about on the grassy area where the church pews would have been: thick stone walls are now the church’s only remnants from the same eruption.

Toward the eastern side of Camiguin is pretty Mantigue Island. For a small fee, partake of the daily catch while learning about the life for the local fishing community. It is also possible to head out to Kabila Beach, where rare taklobo (giant clams) are being bred. Ask local private boat operators about rates and schedules.

To cool off, rappel down the 76-meter (250ft) Katibawasan Falls to a pool surrounded by orchids and ferns, or trek along a rocky riverbank to reach Tuasan Falls.

Despite jaw-dropping beaches, killer surf, rugged mountains and indigenous cultures living much as they have for centuries, Mindanao, with the exception of Siargao and to an extent Camiguin, remains off the tourism industry’s radar. Of course, the conflict that has simmered for several generations (and the 2017 declaration of martial law in the region) bears much of the responsibility for this. That’s not to say, however, that there isn’t development and the woes that go with it – the southern city of Davao is, for example, fairly cosmopolitan.

Mindanao Island is a large island in the southern region of the Philippines best known for its beautiful beaches, incredible forests, rich history and tropical fruit trade. It’s the second largest island in the country.

Where to go in Mindanao

Davao City is the largest city on the island. Davao is best known for its fruit and orchid trade . It’s most famed for the durian, the King of Fruits, which is so stinky that it’s banned from hotels and other public places. Davao is so well known for durian that there are statues of the spiky fruit all over the town. But in addition to durian, Davao also grows many other fruits including mangosteen, rambutan, longan and lychee, for example. The fruit phenomenon is so great that people come from all over the road just for fruit season, which takes place in the summer. You can tour the orchards where the fruits are grown and can also take tours of orchid farms, and purchase the beautiful flowers to take home, if you’re confident that you can keep them in one piece in your luggage!

Zamboanga City is another major population centre on Mindanao. As a port city, Zamboanga is a perfect place for history buffs . Because traders from all lands have come through Zamboanga to ply their wares, it’s rich with history and influences from many different places. It’s a good place to see architecture from all the eras and rulers of the Philippines. Zamboanga is full of churches, forts, and other various buildings that are worth checking out.

Cagayan de Oro City is a city in the northern part of the island. Home to nearly half a million inhabitants, the city is growing at a rapid pace to accommodate its expanding population. Cayagan de Oro is yet another example of a Filipino city that seamlessly blends history and culture with natural beauty to ensure that every type of visitor will find something to enjoy.

Historically-inclined visitors to Cagayan de Oro shouldn’t miss the San Augustin Cathedral, the MacArthur Memorial Marker, or Macahambus Hill. The cathedral is centuries old, features beautiful stained glass windows and was built in the Gothic style; the MacArthur Memorial commemorates American General Douglas MacArthur; and Macahambus Hill was the site of a major battle during the Philippines American War in 1900.

The Museo de Oro is a museum that features Fili[ino artifacts that were found in the region, and is a nice air-conditioned stop for travellers that need to cool off a little bit in the middle of the hot day. For those who want to get out of town and see some nature, Catanico Falls, surrounded by boulders and tropical rainforests (also a great place for swimming) is a great option for a day trip out of the city. The same can be said for Monigue Cave, where visitors are able to enjoy the cavernous depths and an underground stream that runs through the cave.

Because of its size and its popularity as a tourist destination, Cagayan has both local and Western food options as well as many lodging options for budgets of all types.

General Santos City is an urban city in the south of Mindanao Island best known as the home of boxer Manny Pacquiao and also for its tuna fishing industry. There are no beaches, waterfalls, or other objects of natural beautify in General Santos (known by locals as Gen San) so visitors should expect to be doing “city” things when they go. For those with a hankering for shopping, KCC Mall with a good blend of local and international stores should satisfy their need. Plaza General Santos is an urban park dedicated to the Spanish general for whom the city was named.

And of course, as the city makes lots of money off fishing, tuna fishing in particular, visitors should try and eat some fish at a restaurant during their visit. It will likely be both tastier and less expensive than in other places in the Philippines.

If you’re interested in seeing where your meal came from, an interesting tourist site in the city is the General Santos City Fish Port Complex. You’ll be able to see freshly caught yellow fin tuna, albacore tuna, and skipjack tuna being offloaded, cleaned and sold to be shipped all over the world.

Mindanao is also home to the largest population of Muslims in the country , so it’s a good place to appreciate the architecture of beautiful and ornately built Filipino mosques.

When to go to Mindanao

Weather is perfect in Mindanao year-round. Temperature only fluctuates a few degrees throughout the year and in most locations, the precipitation throughout the year is spread out so that there is no dedicated rainy season.

How to get to and from Mindanao

The Davao Airport is the largest airport on the island and flights to and from Manila and Cebu are cheap, short and frequent as well.

You can also take boats from Mindanao Island to other smaller islands in the region, but it’s not a recommended method for getting there in the first place.

Is Mindanao a safe place to visit?

While Mindanao Island is an incredible tourist destination with many things for travellers of all stripes to enjoy, it’s currently not the sagest destination you could choose and many governments strongly warn against their citizens visiting the island .

For example, the United States State Department in a recent travel warning, advised to “exercise extreme caution when traveling to the island of Mindanao, due to continued terrorist threats, insurgent activities and kidnappings.” In 2016, there were 16 kidnappings involving foreigners and in September 2016, there was a coming in Davao City which killed 15 people and wounded 69 people.

If you’re a tourist who is familiar to travelling in countries and regions afflicted by terrorism, then there's a good chance that you will feel perfectly comfortable in Mindanao. Remember that the vast majority of tourists who visit Mindanao enjoy their time there and don’t have any issues. Statistically there is a much better chance of being killed in a traffic accident than in a terrorist attack!

It’s also the breeding grounds of the largest eagle in the world in terms of length and wingspan! Yes, I’m talking about no other than our very own Philippine Eagle. Nevertheless, all those doubts are answered by the name of the river itself because it truly is enchanting.

Many are scared they heard Mindanao. Mindanao is relatively safe. I had visited numerous tourist spots in Mindanao, and I didn’t experience any problems for each of my travels. Of course, every traveler must exercise the necessary precautions when visiting a new place, including all places in the world.

In line with the above, we recommend the following if you plan to visit any tourist spots in Mindanao.

• Research. Before your trip, it is imperative to research the place before hitting the road. You should know if there is a pending advisory at the place. Learn the bus schedules, especially the last trip, etc. Many daring tourists meet some accidents because they miss the last bus and are forced to sleep on the street or at the terminal.
• Contact the Local Tourism Office. This office will give you sound advice on where to go or whether to go in certain seasons.
• Avail the services of accredited tour operators. Let’s face it: you need a guide in some places, and you cannot do it alone.
• Get some travel insurance. Just a few more bucks will surely save you from any unforeseen accidents.
• Check and recheck the information you get online. Not all travel bloggers who wrote about the place have been there. This is one of the reasons why I put my pics on my blog pages as much as possible to show the readers researching that I had been in the place.
• Ask. Try to be friendly and talk to the locals when you reach the place. They can provide you with priceless pieces of information and tips.

By bus, Philtranco  and PP Bus Lines have daily trips from Pasay or Cubao to Davao for an approximately 48 hours travel time. There are also regular bus and van trips from Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Mati, Surigao, Tagum, Surigao City, Mangagoy,  Davao, tang and various cities and towns in Mindanao.

Mindanao is an island in the Philippines , the southernmost major island in the country and the second largest, after Luzon .

For administrative purposes, the Philippine government divides the country into three main regions — Luzon , Visayas and Mindanao. The Mindanao region includes Mindanao island (shown in red on the map) plus a number of smaller ones nearby (in maroon); the Sulu Islands are off to the southwest, Dinagat and Siargao are to the northeast, and the small island province of Camiguin is in the strait between Mindanao and Bohol .

Mindanao is divided into 5 regions administratively. This guide uses the regions the same as those used in administrative terms:

• Zamboanga Peninsula — on the west; consists of Zamboanga City at the tip of the peninsula, Zamboanga del Norte , Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay
• Bangsamoro ( Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao , or BARMM) — Formerly the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), it consists of three provinces on the mainland, around the bay on the west side south of the Zamboanga Peninsula — Lanao del Sur , Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur — plus three in the Sulu Islands — Basilan , Tawi-Tawi and Sulu
• Soccsksargen — most of the peninsula on the south (the rest is ARMM); consists of North Cotabato , Sarangani , Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato
• Northern Mindanao — consists of Bukidnon , Camiguin , Misamis Occidental , Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte
• Davao Region — around the bay on the southeast; consists of Davao del Norte , Davao del Sur , Davao Oriental , Davao Occidental and Davao de Oro
• Caraga Region — the peninsula in the northeast; consists of Agusan del Norte , Agusan del Sur , Surigao Del Norte , Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands

Mindanao has a long, complex and remarkably colorful history. To settlers, it is a Promised Land ( Lupang Pangako ) rich in natural resources. Much of the region's history circles on a long, ongoing ethno-religious conflict between Christian migrants and native Muslims; religious clashes have been going on since the arrival of the Spaniards on the island in the late 1500s.

Until the late 19th century, almost the entire northern coast of Borneo and parts of the Philippines — more-or-less everything from Sarawak to Mindanao — was heavily infested with pirates , and most of the area was ruled by pirate kings. The Sultanate of Sulu ruled all of the Sulu Islands and Palawan plus parts of Borneo and mainland Mindanao, and its capital Jolo (on Sulu) had a great slave market. The Spanish, the British, the Sultan of Brunei , the White Rajas of Sarawak, and later the Americans fought wars against the pirate kingdoms and eventually shut them down, but it was quite a struggle.

Pirates from Mindanao often raided towns in other parts of the Philippines. Towns like Altavas and Bolinao were built inland to avoid them, while others had fortifications or a warning system like the Dumaguete bell tower . This may not be entirely ended; in 2001 a group based in Basilan grabbed 20 hostages near Puerto Princesa in Palawan and in 2015 another bunch grabbed four near Davao. In both cases the raiders arrived by boat and some hostages were eventually murdered.

The Moros vigorously resisted Spanish, American and Japanese rule for several reasons: Moro nationalism, anti-colonialism, Islam, and piracy. Today some are still resisting the Philippine government. The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) was established in 1989 to give them partial independence, and a peace deal between the government and the largest Moro militia group (Moro Islamic Liberation Front or MILF) was signed in 2012. However there are still armed rebel groups in some areas and a substantial Philippine military presence to suppress them; the two sides reportedly have ties to Al Qaeda and the CIA respectively. On January 2019, ARMM was replaced by the Bangsamoro region after a successful plebiscite.

Moros still talk about a battle at Bud Dajo on Sulu in 1906 where, according to Moro accounts and American critics of the war such as Mark Twain, American forces massacred almost 1000 people, mostly women and children. Some draw parallels with current events; naval guns were used at Bud Dajo to kill at a distance, much as drones are used today. In official American accounts it was a justified counter-insurgency action with some collateral damage, many of the women were armed and some of the children were being used as human shields.

Mindanao occupies about 98,000 km 2 (38,000 sq mi), or about 33% of the Philippines' territorial area, making it larger than countries such as the Netherlands, South Korea, and Austria, to mention a few.

Mindanao has a great variety of terrain, having ten mountain ranges, two plateau areas, and many swampy lowlands. Most of the island has scattered mountain ranges, but the central and eastern parts has the most mountains, and sprawling plains between them, especially in the Soccsksargen region.

Most of Mindanao is covered with rainforest and some peat swamps, but they have been mostly cleared out for farmland and a few oil palm plantations.

Off the southwest end of Mindanao are the Sulu Islands , a chain leading almost all the way to Sabah , which is the easternmost province of Malaysia , located on the island of Borneo .

Mindanao's population is diverse, even before colonial times. With a population of over 28,000,000 (2015 figures: over 22% of the Philippines' total), it is the second most populous island of the Philippines and the eighth in the world.

Most of Mindanao's non-indigenous people are of Visayan, and occasionally Ilocano and Tagalog heritage, mostly migrants brought by American-era resettlement programs in the 1930s. They form over 50-60% of the population.

The southwestern portion of Mindanao, from the Sulu Archipelago to Maguindanao and the Lanao provinces, is the homeland of the Moro (Filipino Muslim) people, which are rather a grouping of ethnic groups which practiced Islam long before the Spaniards arrived.

A predominantly Muslim group, the Sama-Bajau ( Badjao , also "Sea Gypsies"), live mostly on boats and are found in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia . There has always been extensive trade between Mindanao and Borneo, and the Badjao do much of that trading. They are also found in most other parts of the Philippines, and often seen as beggars or vagrants in the cities.

The rest of Mindanao, especially the forested interior, are the ancestral lands of the animist Lumad , rather an umbrella term for all the non-Muslim indigenous peoples of Mindanao. They used to live in most of Mindanao not inhabited by the Moros, until Christian immigrants, primarily Visayans and Ilocanos under American-era resettlement drove them into the mountains. The Lumad are facing an uncertain future, having been repeatedly accused of harboring communist rebels, but they are striving to keep their culture and lifestyle alive.

Being 10 degrees north of the equator, most of Mindanao have a tropical climate, with just two seasons, though it really rains at any time for each season. In reality though, the climate is far from uniform, with the northern and eastern parts of the island which faces the Pacific generally wet all year, and the southern and western parts mostly hot and dry.

Mindanao can be said to be outside the typhoon belt, but it can be struck by typhoons during the final months of the year.

Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City ( DVO  IATA ) is the main port of entry by plane, and there are international flights from Singapore (on Scoot), Doha (on Qatar Airways), Quanzhou (on XiamenAir), and Manado (on Garuda Indonesia). Laguindingan Airport ( CGY  IATA ) is the second most important airport, but only receives domestic flights and has a short runway which cannot accommodate larger aircraft.

The other airports with regular flights are:

• Zamboanga City ( ZAM  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines from Manila and Cebu, PAL Express from Kota Kinabalu (suspended).
• Dipolog ( DPL  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific and PAL Express from Manila, and Cebgo from Cebu
• Pagadian ( PAG  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific and PAL Express from Manila and Cebgo from Cebu.
• Ozamiz ( OZC  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific from Manila and Cebu, and PAL Express from Manila
• Cotabato City ( CBO  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific from Manila and Cebu, Philippine Airlines from Manila
• General Santos ( GES  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific from Cebu, Iloilo and Manila. Philippine Airlines from Manila, Cebu, and Iloilo
• Camiguin ( CGM  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific and PAL Express from Cebu, SkyJet from Manila
• Butuan ( BXU  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific and PAL Express from Manila and Cebu
• Surigao City ( SUG  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific from Manila and Cebu
• Siargao ( IAO  IATA ) - Cebu Pacific from Manila and Cebu, PAL Express from Clark and Cebu.

Zamboanga, Pagadian, Dipolog, Cotabato, General Santos, and Butuan, can accommodate flights using medium-sized jet aircraft like Airbus A320s or Boeing 737s, but the others are only capable of accommodating turboprop planes and small business jets.

Ferries connect Mindanao with Luzon and Visayas, and internationally from Malaysia ( Sandakan ) and Indonesia ( Bitung ).

• Ferries from Cagayan de Oro connect with Manila , Iloilo , Bacolod , Cebu City , and Tagbilaran .
• Zamboanga City is connected by ferry to Manila (via Dumaguete ), and Sandakan in Malaysia.
• Lipata port in Surigao City is served by roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ferries link from Leyte , and ferries from Cebu .
• Nasipit in Butuan has ferries from Manila, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, and Jagna .
• Dapitan is served by RORO ferries from Dumaguete on companies such as Aleson, Montenegro, and Super Shuttle.
• Dipolog has ferries from Manila, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu.
• The other ports in Iligan , Ozamiz , and Dipolog is connected to Manila, Iloilo, Bacolod, and Cebu.

Philtranco has deluxe buses to Davao , Cagayan de Oro , Butuan , Tandag , Bislig , Tagum and Surigao going to/from Manila via Lucena , Naga , Iriga , Legazpi , Calbayog and Tacloban . Since 2022, Davao Metro Shuttle also runs a Manila–Davao service, with luxury Volvo buses.

PP Bus Lines also has a similar daily service from Manila to Davao City, but with non-air-conditioned vehicles.

Ceres Liner , the largest bus company in the Visayas, operates a Dumaguete to Dipolog service, which takes the ferry to Dapitan . Bachelor Express also has buses from Tagbilaran and Tubigon in Bohol and Ormoc and Tacloban in Leyte to Davao and Butuan.

Mindanao is as vast as Luzon, and as said above, roughly the same size as some European countries such as Austria or Netherlands. By land, bus travel is the best mode of transportation, but for even longer distances, air travel is faster and safer.

Mindanao's long-haul bus services are dominated by the Bacolod -based company Yanson Group of Bus Companies , which runs services through its three subsidiaries in the island:

• Bachelor Express . Largest bus company in the eastern Mindanao area, it operates most routes in Caraga and Davao regions from its Butuan and Davao City bases, as well as services along the Butuan-Cagayan de Oro corridor. Bachelor Express buses are painted a vivid yellow; its luxury buses are branded Bachelor Tours. ( updated Sep 2020 )
• Rural Transit . Serves most of northern, central and western Mindanao, with routes from its Cagayan de Oro and Pagadian bases to most of Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, Koronadal, Davao City, and Cotabato City, as well as from Zamboanga City to major destinations within Zamboanga Peninsula. Buses are painted red; its air-conditioned luxury buses are branded Rural Tours. ( updated Sep 2020 )

Most cities and towns in Mindanao have one centralized bus station, generally near downtown. The hub cities, Davao, General Santos and Cagayan de Oro, have one central terminal providing easy transfers between bus lines, though Cagayan de Oro is an exception, with two separate terminals, which means you have to take local public transport to reach the other terminal. For example, if transferring from a bus coming from anywhere in western Mindanao to a bus headed for Davao, you must take a jeepney or a taxi to the terminal for trips to eastern Mindanao.

Traveling by bus through Mindanao can be dangerous, especially in Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga, and Bangsamoro. There have been cases of terrorist groups planting bombs on buses, and passengers can get robbed by bandits. Due to those, buses in Mindanao may only stop at designated stops and stations, and luggage are inspected by transportation police before being placed onto the cargo compartment.

Flying is a possible alternative to the slower provincial buses for long distances in Mindanao, and are the only other way to get between the mainland and Sulu Archipelago beside the ferries.

Cebu Pacific and Cebgo flies to Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga from their Davao hub and to Cotabato City and Tawi-tawi from Zamboanga, while PAL Express flies to Zamboanga and Siargao from Davao and to Tawi-tawi from Zamboanga.

By car or motorcycle

Driving is not a good option due to the relative high accident rate, the risk of being attacked and robbed by bandits around Bangsamoro, and the lack of rental agencies outside the largest cities, but is an enjoyable experience as open roads are more possible here and some inland locations are only best reachable by car or motorcycle.

Mindanao proper has a good network of national highways, linking most major cities with each other. Traffic is relatively light, with less cars but more motorcycles, tricycles, and larger and longer trucks. Most cities and towns only grew during the American era, with more centralized settlements surrounded by large swaths of rural land, and roads are quite wider as there are a few houses built close to the road. Road quality has been improved through efforts to widen the most travelled highways, but this is only true for most of the mainland (except Bangsamoro or the former ARMM).

Car rental is only available on the largest cities (e.g. Davao), and if you intend to drive a lot, you could either bring a vehicle from Luzon or buy one within the island (useful if you intend to stay in Mindanao for the long term).

Small tourist towns and the outlying islands (e.g. Siargao, Camiguin) have motorcycle rentals, but is only good for trips within a few kilometers from town.

Ferries and boats connect mainland Mindanao with outlying islands. There are also a few services between coastal cities in the mainland, but are slower than a bus ride or a flight.

Most Mindanao residents speak Visayan languages like Cebuano (often called Bisaya by the speakers themselves) and Hiligaynon as their first language, reflecting the Visayan background of most of its migrant population. Cebuano is most widely spoken, but the varieties or dialects spoken will be different from Standard or General Cebuano, and may contain influences from other major Visayan languages.

Tagalog, while mostly a second language in most of Mindanao, is widely spoken in Davao Region , and also has an influenced the dialect of Cebuano spoken in that region. A mix of Cebuano and Tagalog called "Bisalog" is common spoken in Davao Region, most commonly in Davao City.

Ilocano can be encountered as well, especially in inland Cotabato where some Ilocos residents settled back in the 1930s.

Languages native to Mindanao are numerous; among the notable of them are Surigaonon in the Surigao provinces of Caraga , Maguindanaoan in Maguindanao , Maranao in the Lanao provinces, and Tausug in Sulu. The animist, jungle-dwelling Lumad also speak their own languages but are less useful as most can speak the lingua franca of their area.

The Spanish-based creole language Chavacano , is spoken and understood as a first language in Zamboanga City and Basilan.
