Few places in the world pack in as much culture per square meter as Europe does… and nobody packs fun into Europe like Carnival does! There’s so much variety across the continent and its islands, and with Carnival you have options for experiencing many of these places by sea. Cruise the Mediterranean and soak in the espresso-fueled, yet somehow unhurried, cobblestone-lined street life from a sidewalk café. Snow-capped peaks go great with postcard-perfect glaciers across Northern Europe destinations… plus you’ll find some of the greenest British Isle views on the same itinerary! Western Europe cruises visit the region from which the explorers of the New World kicked off their voyages. If your head is spinning with all the possibilities… great! That means you have choices — and believe us, any one of them is the right choice!

  • See some of nature’s most dramatic landscapes.
  • Explore historical buildings, ruins and cathedrals that are older than many countries.
  • Check out museums and statues... and always read the plaques.

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests at double occupancy, 3,172 guests at maximum capacity and 1.048 crew members. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Viking Saturn

Debuted in May 2023, the adults-only Viking Saturn holds 930 passengers (at double occupancy) and 465 crew members. Travelers love the ship's clean Scandinavian design and compact size, which allows it to dock in smaller ports that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

On board, travelers have access to a slew of amenities, including a fitness center, a spa, a library, a state-of-the-art theater, a hair salon, an infinity pool and more. A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. When hunger strikes, Viking Saturn offers an array of dining options, from fresh seafood at World Café to afternoon tea service at Wintergarden to traditional Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's. Or, learn how to prepare regional dishes from your itinerary at the onboard cooking school.

Starting at 270 square feet, standard staterooms come equipped with king-size mattresses (which can be converted into two twin beds), flat-screen TVs, full-size verandas and bathrooms with heated floors. What's more, each accommodation includes 24-hour room service. Travelers who opt to stay in one of the ship's upgraded suites (which reach up to 1,448 square feet) have access to additional perks such as separate living areas and dining rooms, complimentary laundry services and a welcome bottle of Champagne, among other luxuries.

Viking Saturn sails to a variety of destinations in northern Europe (such as Bergen, Norway; London  and Stockholm ) and the Mediterranean (think: Barcelona, Spain ; Rome ; Athens, Greece ; and Istanbul ).

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger (double occupancy), 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet).

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater.

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Seven Seas Splendor visits a variety of European and Mediterranean destinations, as well as ports across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and South America.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers at double occupancy, 3,385 at maximum occupancy and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman .

Viking Mars

Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers at double occupancy. Since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports that some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on Viking Mars visit the Mediterranean, Canada and Central America.

The 930-passenger (double occupancy) Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. The ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Central America, the South Pacific and Australia. The ship also offers world voyages.

Resilient Lady

An adults-only, LGBTQ-friendly cruise ship, Resilient Lady has a maximum capacity of 2,762 passengers and carries 1,150 crew members. Since setting sail in May 2023, Virgin Voyages' third ship has received praise among travelers for its exceptional dining scene and exciting entertainment options. With onboard experiences ranging from acrobatic performances to comedy shows to themed parties, Resilient Lady is best for travelers who are seeking an upbeat and social atmosphere.

When you've worked up an appetite from your activity-filled day, grab a bite at one of the ship's 20-plus eateries, which serve everything from Mexican to Asian to Italian fare. Although all food is included, reservations are still required at many restaurants. There is also no shortage of bars to choose from, whether you want to sample The Loose Cannon's signature cocktails or sip some bubbly in the Champagne lounge.

All accommodations come equipped with comforts like flat-screen TVs, rain showers, mood lighting and convertible Seabeds. For more room, opt for one of the ship's RockStar Quarters. These upgraded suites feature extras like a terrace with a hammock, European king-size mattresses and spacious marble bathrooms.

Resilient Lady sails to a variety of destinations in Europe and the Caribbean, including top destinations such as Athens, Greece ; Dubrovnik, Croatia .; and Castries, St. Lucia .

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The Wake boasts the most ambiance of all eateries on Virgin Voyages vessels by far, so make sure to lock in reservations when you can. This upscale restaurant offers prime entrees with plenty of upgrade options for those who want to splurge. This establishment also features huge windows that provide incredible views of the ocean from the back of the ship. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Viking Jupiter

Debuted in February 2019, Viking Jupiter is the cruise line's sixth ocean vessel. The ship sleeps 930 guests at double occupancy in luxurious staterooms that include everything from large bathrooms to comfortable king-sized beds. As an added bonus, each room is equipped with free Wi-Fi access.

Travelers will have the opportunity to indulge in several onboard activities. They can visit the spa's snow grotto and chill beneath the snowflakes, go for a swim in the infinity pool or let their worries melt away in the hot tub. The Bar and The Living Room offer additional spaces to unwind with a cocktail or mingle with fellow cruisers.

For afternoon tea and light snacks, travelers can stop by Wintergarden, or for a heartier meal, the main dining room, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant or World Café offer scrumptious European delicacies, Chinese fare and everything in between. In the evening, cruisers can catch a live show in The Theater or a destination-themed movie in one of two onboard cinemas.

Recent travelers were wowed by the ship, appreciating its tasteful, minimalist decor. They also found the food delicious and suggested purchasing the upgraded drink package.

Viking Jupiter visits ports in Buenos Aires , Barcelona  and more on both regional and transatlantic cruises.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Viking Jupiter and Viking Orion are the only two ships in the fleet that have a planetarium called the Explorer’s Dome. Refer to the daily program, the Viking Star, to see what shows are available during your voyage. – Gwen Pratesi, Contributor

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade holds 1,200 passengers (at double occupancy) and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Australia, Asia, the Middle East and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have a great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship’s Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. Best European cruises: 6 ships that stand out across the pond

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

Prospective cruisers often ask me what the best European cruises are, but that question is difficult to answer because Europe is massive. It encompasses some 45 countries and includes such cruise regions as the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Northern Europe, the British Isles and the Canary Islands.

While cruisers are spoiled for choice in this part of the world, it can be difficult to know where to begin when researching voyages.

To help you out, I've narrowed down my favorites for the best cruises to Europe for different types of travelers, including families, couples and solo travelers.

Note: Pricing was accurate at the time of publication. Fares are subject to change without notice.

Best European cruises for families: Disney Fantasy

europe on cruise

Disney Cruise Line is great for kids; if you're planning a cruise in Europe with children, Disney Fantasy is a logical choice for the best European cruise for families.

Character meet and greets, awe-inspiring nighttime entertainment and fun dining experiences mean your kiddos will never be bored. The ship's stellar kids clubs go above and beyond with a likeness of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and Star Wars flight simulators. They can even go to the Marvel Super Hero Academy, where kids can train to become protectors of the universe.

Disney Fantasy is not the line's newest ship, meaning it's a bit more manageable in terms of both size and price. It's not the oldest, either, so families will find more things to do on board than on the line's smallest vessels.

Ashore, Disney's family-friendly excursions will take you to laze on the beach, explore museums and learn about history.

In May 2025, Disney Fantasy will begin three- to 12-night cruises to Western Europe, the British Isles and the Mediterranean . Cruise fares start from $362 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. You can visit ports like Glasgow, Scotland, and Liverpool, U.K., on cruises from Southampton, U.K.; you can also visit Florence and Rome (Civitavecchia) on Barcelona sailings.

Best European cruises for couples: Viking Star

europe on cruise

If you're a couple seeking an upscale Mediterranean or Northern Europe experience that offers real value and a chance to reconnect with your partner, look no further than Viking .

The line's Viking Star sails various Northern Europe and Mediterranean itineraries, and the European ports the ship visits offer plenty of opportunities for you to feel the love. Take a pizza-making class together in Italy , or get a little giggly at a wine tasting in Greece.

Viking includes at least one free shore excursion per port in its fares. That means you can wander Europe's romantic cobblestone streets, hand-in-hand with your sweetie, without paying a penny extra.

While fares aren't the cheapest you'll find, you'll get a lot for your money. In addition to the tours, Viking includes Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner in its prices.

Plus, all cabins on Viking's ships have balconies, which is great if you want some fresh air but feel like keeping to yourselves. Complimentary room service is available 24/7, so you can order dinner to your cabin for a charming alfresco dining experience for two.

Want even more ways to pamper yourselves together? Check out the phenomenal thermal suite in the ship's spa ; they offer saunas and steam rooms, tile loungers and aromatherapy rooms at no extra charge. Or, splurge on a couples massage, which will leave both of you feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Even better, Viking ships don't allow children on board. It's a great excuse for you and your significant other to rekindle the romance without other passengers' kids ruining the vibe.

Through 2025, Viking's Northern Europe and Mediterranean sailings range from seven to 28 nights. The ship visits ports such as Barcelona; Rome (Civitavecchia) and Venice, Italy; Athens and Santorini, Greece; Istanbul; Bergen, Norway; and Reykjavik.

Fares start from $400 per person, per night for a balcony cabin on a Western Mediterranean itinerary.

Best European cruises for seniors: Seabourn Sojourn

europe on cruise

If you're a senior traveler who loves great food and excellent wine, one of the best luxury European cruises you can book is a cruise to the Canary Islands on Seabourn 's Seabourn Sojourn.

The small ship carries fewer than 500 passengers, and you won't find raucous parties or tons of children. Instead, you'll be met with stellar service, gourmet food, a room with a view (all cabins have at least a window), and relative peace and quiet. The long itineraries are ideal for wealthier passengers with lots of time to travel.

Seabourn Sojourn's voyages to the Canaries span 12 to 26 days and visit the islands of La Palma, Gran Canaria and Madeira; they also visit Lisbon. Fares start from $314 per person, per night for a suite on a March 2025 sailing. Extras like Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol (including the in-room minibar) are rolled into the fares.

Best for solo cruisers: Norwegian Epic

europe on cruise

When Norwegian Epic debuted in 2010, it introduced Norwegian Cruise Line 's first cabins for solo travelers. Designed with single beds and a bit less square footage, these so-called studio cabins are clustered around an exclusive lounge reserved for solos. Special activities allow folks traveling alone to mingle and make new friends.

Since Norwegian Epic began sailing, nearly all of the line's new ships — Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — have been built with accommodations for one , which don't charge occupants a single supplement. However, it's Norwegian Epic that has a presence in the Mediterranean and Greek Isles , offering solo cruisers a chance to explore Europe on a ship with cabins just for them.

On board, passengers have plenty of choices for activities and dining. In addition to the usual cruise-ship offerings — pool games, dance parties, game shows, trivia and movie screenings — Epic offers many fun diversions. Options include an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship, spa treatments, a bowling alley and even gaming lessons (the latter three for a fee).

The vessel sails six- to 12-night voyages, round-trip from Rome (Civitavecchia), calling on ports that include Naples and Florence (Livorno), Italy; Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, Spain; Marseille and Cannes, France; and Mykonos and Santorini, Greece, among others. At press time, studio fares started at $161 per night for a 12-night sailing. The voyage includes a two-night pre-cruise stay with tours of Rome and features port calls on Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu, Greece; Valletta (Malta); and Sicily, Naples and Florence (Livorno), Italy.

Best European party cruises: Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady

europe on cruise

If your Europe bucket list includes the Greek islands, you don't want to sail with children and you enjoy a lively party atmosphere, you can't go wrong with Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady. The third ship in the line's fleet, Resilient Lady offers some of the best cruises to the Greek Islands and other places in the Mediterranean.

Expect a casual vibe where passengers dress up like mermaids, crew dress up like drag queens and performers look like real people. Toss in an onboard tattoo parlor, a food court ( it's not a buffet ), free fitness classes and an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on the ship; you get a product that has turned the cruise industry on its head.

Wild nights on board include raucous and sometimes raunchy theater shows, impromptu dance parties and Scarlet Night — a poolside bash reminiscent of a rave where everyone's dressed in red. If you attend enough daily activities, you might even be invited to a secret nighttime tour of the crew bar, drinks included.

The ship offers a regular program of seven- to 11-night voyages. Prices start from $174 per person, per night for an inside cabin on an eight-night cruise to France, Italy and Greece in April 2025.

Best European cruises for 'wow' factor: Hurtigruten's Richard With

europe on cruise

Looking for a sailing that no other cruise line offers and one that will make everyone on TikTok and Instagram jealous? I'm putting my money on a line you've likely never heard of: Hurtigruten .

The line began more than 130 years ago as a way for Norway's residents to move themselves and cargo up and down the Norwegian coast. It continues today as both a means of transportation and a way for cruisers to experience the country's culture.

On the cruise line's Norwegian Coastal Express route, Hurtigruten's Richard With ship calls on more than 30 ports in just six or seven days (depending on itinerary). Some are quick stops in the middle of the night while cargo is loaded and unloaded, but you could get off the ship in each port if you really wanted to. That in itself makes this itinerary buzzworthy.

Still need convincing? These voyages also cross into the Arctic Circle and sail into Geirangerfjord (northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes) and Trollfjord (southbound from Kirkenes to Bergen). The route affords absolutely breathtaking views and, of course, bragging rights.

The two routes can be combined into longer 13-day sailings, meaning you'd sail round-trip from Bergen and see all the fjords. Seven-night northbound itineraries from Bergen to Kirkenes start at $137 per person, per night for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

Ultimately, the best cruise to Europe is a bit subjective in that it depends where in Europe you'd like to go and what your travel style is. Be sure to weigh a combination of destination, price and onboard vibe when deciding which is best for you and your travel party.

East vs West: Mediterranean cruise routes

Cunard has been sailing the mediterranean for decades, and our iconic red funnel is recognized at dozens of ports across the region. enthralling history and culinary delights await in both halves of this historic sea, so which cruise route should you choose for your mediterranean cruise.

Rebecca Proctor, Cunard writer

Rebecca Proctor

Eastern Mediterranean cruises

Western mediterranean cruises, central mediterranean cruises.

If your idea of a perfect vacation is a morning exploring temples or a few restful hours relaxing on golden sands, then our Eastern Mediterranean itineraries would be a perfect choice. Think Greek islands, Turkish temples, and Croatian castles – all while sailing from the east coast of Italy to the easternmost reaches of the Mediterranean Sea.

One option would be to fly out to meet your ship in Civitavecchia (gateway to Rome) for a two-week cruise that takes in parts of Turkey and a selection of the Greek islands. You could stop off in Rhodes , said to be blessed with sunshine by Apollo himself, or visit the Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Kusadasi, Turkey

Kuşadası , the gateway port to Ephesus and its ancient temples is a scenery lover’s dream, rich with natural treasures. It’s the perfect place to take a boat ride, perhaps even sailing to a local bay to spot and swim among resident marine life.

Sailing along the Turkish coast may even take you through the Dardanelles Strait , one of the narrowest straits used for international navigation today. The Strait forms part of the continental border between Europe and Asia and the transit offers a wonderful opportunity to spend time up on deck, drink in hand, before your ship enters the Sea of Marmara for your next port of call: Istanbul.

Positioned at the entry point to the Black Sea, Istanbul is a hive of activity. One of the highlights is its famous Blue Mosque, but the city offers much more for first-time and repeat travelers to explore, including browsing the wares at bustling markets and sampling Turkish delicacies such as traditional coffee, meze, ezine cheese, and – of course – Turkish delight.

Santorini, Greece

Sailing back through the Dardanelles Strait brings you to the Greek island of Santorini , one of the most recognizable Mediterranean ports thanks to its whitewashed, blue-domed houses lining the cliffs. Red Beach – so named for its red volcanic sand – is also worth a visit, as is the Lost Atlantis Experience Museum.

The final two ports on your Eastern Mediterranean cruise are also Greek. Piraeus , gateway to Athens, and Katakolon , where you can travel to Olympia. Around a 15- to 20-minute drive from Piraeus brings you to central Athens, a journey that, with taxis and sightseeing buses, is very easy to make. Once here, the options for how to pass your day in port feel almost endless. Explore the birthplace of democracy. See the famous Acropolis. Marvel at museums, galleries, and local boutiques. Or dine on delicious Greek meze until you’re fit to burst.

Katakolon, Greece

Last but not least on your Eastern Mediterranean cruise route is Katakolon . With its beach offering dips in the Ionian Sea, a day spent here is perfectly pleasant. For many visitors, however, the chance to visit Olympia, home of the Olympic flame, the ancient Temple of Zeus, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site that marks the original Olympic stadium, is too much of a temptation to pass up. Particularly as it lies just half an hour from port.

Eastern Mediterranean itineraries beginning and ending in Civitavecchia additionally offer you the chance to extend your stay, pre- or post-cruise, to spend a few days exploring Rome. Cunard partners with local hotels, so your White Star Service treatment can continue on shore for just a while longer. Simply contact us to add a few nights at a luxury hotel, before or after your cruise booking.

Barcelona, Spain

For the ultimate exploration of Mediterranean history and modern culture, a Western Mediterranean cruise may be the perfect fit. The Western Mediterranean spans from the Strait of Gibraltar all the way to the west coast of Italy, and includes colorful Spanish cities, traditional island towns, and Italian destinations brimming with flavor. To illustrate, our sample cruise begins in Barcelona and heads east to Civitavecchia – stopping point for Rome – over seven glorious nights.

Barcelona is a destination in itself, home to numerous architectural wonders created by renowned Catalan architect and designer, Gaudí. A walking tour of the city is a perfect way to take in several of these iconic buildings, but Barcelona is also a center for gastronomy. A few tapas, perhaps paired with a glass of Rioja or Tempranillo wine, is also one of the pleasures of a visit here. With Cunard hotel packages available in town, you could even fly in a day or two before your cruise departs, giving you the chance to explore properly before you set sail.

Following your departure from the city, your first full day on board will be a sea day. On this first day of your vacation, enjoy time getting to know your Cunard Queen , perhaps even taking the opportunity to soak up a few rays of Mediterranean sunshine by the pool.

Alghero, Sardinia, Italy

The following morning, you’ll awake to the sights and sounds of Toulon on the south coast of France. Nestled within a natural harbor, and home to French naval history, your port call here offers a chance to acquaint yourself with the historic docks, the opera house, and Toulon Cathedral, or to head further into the Provence region of France to explore vineyards, traditional villages, and vast lavender fields.

Sardinia, specifically Alghero , is the next port of call on your Western Mediterranean cruise. Take in the city’s old stone fortifications from the deck of your ship, before stepping on shore to explore. Known as “Little Barcelona”, Alghero enjoys many Spanish influences, though the city is definitely Italian, with delicious food on every corner and multiple white-sand beaches. If you wish to explore beyond the city, travel to some of the local olive groves, wineries, or pine forests for a greener adventure.

Naples, Italy

After Alghero, relax on board your ship for another sea day before calling at Messina, Italy . Positioned just off the Strait of Messina , Messina lies on the island of Sicily, though the Italian mainland is only three miles away. The city, historically a trading hub, is now a bustling hive of boutiques and market stalls ready for discovery. Nearby Mount Etna can be seen in the distance, and may be reachable via a Shore Experience (subject to availability). The Strait of Messina itself is connected to the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas and is abuzz with migratory birds and swordfish between May and July. After your port call to Messina, your ship will transit the Strait in the evening and head north to Naples .

The home of Italian pizza, Naples’ treasures extend beyond the culinary. The nearby town of Pompeii (accessible on a Cunard Shore Experience) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its perfect preservation of people and homes following Mount Vesuvius’ eruption almost two thousand years ago.

On your last morning on board, savor a leisurely breakfast before stepping on shore in Civitavecchia. This bustling port is a mere two hours from Rome, Italy’s famous capital, and the end point of your Cunard West Mediterranean cruise. Disembarking your ship here presents the perfect opportunity to extend your vacation with a hotel stay to see the numerous historic sites this beautiful city has to offer.

Corfu, Greece

Of course, if you find choosing between the east and west of the Mediterranean for your cruise too difficult, our Central Mediterranean cruise routes may be just what you’re looking for.

Central Mediterranean itineraries take in the best of both worlds: beginning in Barcelona, meandering Mediterranean islands, and traveling through the Strait of Messina, around the coast of Italy, before venturing on to the Greek islands and Croatia.

Discover all Cunard cruises sailing to the Mediterranean or narrow your results by searching for 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027 cruises, or even a port of call you’d like to start or end your Cunard cruise from.

Split, Croatia Hvar Scenery

SUN, SPICE AND SEA BREEZES

It's no coincidence that many of the best European cruises call in the most beautiful ports in the world. Eat your way through the cobbled streets of Italy, contrast the timeless beauty of Greece's ruins with the modern chic that's come to define its islands or hike through forlorn caverns and up lush waterfalls in captivating Croatia.

Rome, Italy Colosseum

DISCOVER LA DOLCE VITA

From the storied streets of Rome to the charming canals of Venice, Italy is a country that needs no introduction. Whether you pose with Michelangelo's David in Florence or indulge in to-die-for Pizza in Naples, it's no wonder why so many cruises to Europe visit la bella Italia.

Crociera Mediterraneo Grecia

FROM THE ACROPOLIS TO THE AEGEAN

Greece is remarkable, from the ancient Acropolis of Athens to the blue-roofed houses of Santorini. Whether you trek through the limestone hills in the north or swim through the cobalt waters around the Cyclades, it's easy to see why this is one of the best places to visit in Europe.

Cityscape Walls and Coastline in Dubrovnik, Croatia

"GAMES OF THRONES" Lives On

The hit TV show might be finished, but "Game of Thrones" fans will recognize dozens of locations in the walled city of Dubrovnik , the jewel of Croatia's Adriatic coast. Further afield, explore the countless waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park or pair European cruises with tastings at underrated wineries.

Beach with Boats in the Mediterranean

SCENES THAT INSPIRED 1,000 PAINTINGS

Endless possibilities are what the coasts of France, Spain and Portugal have always been about. Generations of iconic painters from Van Gogh to Picasso have found inspiration from the crystalline coasts of the French Riviera to the craggy mountaintops of the Canary Islands. Of course, the best European cruises also dock in timeless cities like Barcelona, Cherbourg, Lisbon and beyond.

French Riviera Botanical Garden

CITY OF LOVE, CÔTE D'AZUR

The only thing better than strolling into Paris as the Eiffel Tower lights up at night? Sitting down for a meal of freshly caught seafood as the sun sets over the harbour of aptly named Nice. France has got something for every traveller, which is why so many cruises to Europe dock here.

Spain Barcelona Sagrada Familia

SAY "SALUD" TO SPAIN

Sitting down for Spanish tapas is one of the most satisfying food experiences in the world, especially when you wash it down with fruity sangria. Plus, the Jurassic topography of the Canary Islands and the storied streets of Barcelona are just a few of the best places to visit in Europe you'll find here.

Lisbon, Portugal, Pena National Palace

KING OF DISCOVERY

Portugal is where many of the first expeditions to the New World start, but most people on European cruises bound for Lisbon wonder why anyone would leave. Explore the mysterious Quinta de Regaleira castle in Sintra, pour port wine in Porto or practise your surfing skills in the Algarve.

OLD-WORLD WARMTH ALONG A BREEZY COAST

You can feel warmth in your heart no matter the temperature outside, and the northwestern reaches of Europe illustrate this beautifully. Join the best European cruises through the British Isles and along the coast of the Netherlands, where enchanted country charm and royal, old-world cities offer endless possibilities for memories that will last a lifetime.

Amsterdam, Netherlands Tulip Field

THE JOY OF GOING DUTCH

The Dutch have managed to keep the sea at bay for hundreds of years, but many of the best European cruises still make their way into Amsterdam . If you tire of the tranquility you find amid tulip fields and beneath towering windmills, make your way to the hipster capital of Rotterdam.

Ireland Rock of Cashel

ETERNAL LANDSCAPES ON THE EMERALD ISLE

Life is but a dream in Ireland , whether you down a pint of Guinness and trace tales told by James Joyce in Dublin, or careen along the Cliffs of Moher along the west coast. Many cruises to Europe also stop in Northern Ireland's Belfast, a city that's a testament to rebirth and reconciliation.

Cityscape in Glasgow, Scotland

STEP INTO A SCOTTISH FAIRYTALE

When you visit Scotland, it can be difficult to discern legend from real life. Strolling down Edinburgh's Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle might feel like a dream, while the fabled and mythical Loch Ness may surprise you with its charm and stunning scenery. Scotland's one of the best places to visit in Europe, without a doubt.

Iceland is an unbelievable wonderland where scenes like this one of Kirkjufell mountain abound.

WINTER SKIES, SUMMER SUN

Scandinavia  is dark for much of the year, but light is what defines its polar nations, from the Midnight Sun that rises high above Demark in mid-summer, to the skies above Norway and Iceland amid winter's deepest freeze. Find endless possibilities and the best European cruises along the Baltic, from the savoury seafood eateries of Oslo, to the cold cityscape of Reykjavik.

Copenhagen, Denmark Nyhavn Pier Sunset

SCANDINAVIA'S UNSUNG SISTER

Many of the best European cruises dock in Denmark, and it's no wonder why. From colourful Nyhavn harbour in Copenhagen to storied castles like Amalienborg and Frederiksborg, Denmark more than makes up for the fact that its more famous neighbours often eclipse it.

Iceland Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa

LAND OF FIRE AND ICE

It's easy to be intrigued by Iceland , whether you walk through Reykjavik's riveting Hallgrimskirkja church, or visit "the Wash Road", the hippest shopping district in the city. There are few better ways to cap off cruises to Europe than a dip in the aptly-named Blue Lagoon.

Norway, Stavanger Majestic Cliff

PRICELESS PANORAMAS, FABULOUS FJORDS

Norway is a country in beautiful balance. Had enough of the orderliness of Oslo? Head west to beautiful Bergen, where finger-shaped fjords jut into and out of thousands of miles of coastline. Or contrast a fresh fish dinner at sea level with a view from the towering Trolltunga cliff.

Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.

You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your holiday.

Europeans speak more English the further north you go. Your phone's translation app (or, at minimum, learning how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in local languages) will aid you along the Mediterranean.

RELATED PORTS

Learn more about Baltic ports like Klaipeda, Lithuania and Tallinn, Estonia, or read up on Bergen, the gateway to Norway's stunning fjords. The Mediterranean provides many options but start by exploring Malaga on Spain's Costa del Sol or the exciting Monte Carlo, Monaco. The most popular ports in the British Isles are Edinburgh in Scotland and the cities of Belfast and Dublin in Ireland. No matter what you like, you will find your favourite European cruise.

Navigating the Waters: How to Choose the Best River Cruise in Europe

Determining your cruise criteria.

When deciding on the best river cruise in Europe, start by setting your cruise criteria. Consider factors such as travel dates, budget, preferred destinations, and onboard experience. By outlining your priorities, you can narrow down the options and focus on cruise companies that align with your preferences.

For example, if you prioritize cultural immersion, look for cruises that offer guided excursions to historical sites and local landmarks. On the other hand, if relaxation is your main goal, seek cruises with onboard spas, wellness activities, and scenic cruising opportunities.

Understanding Itineraries and Routes

Before booking a river cruise in Europe, delve into the details of the itineraries and routes offered by different companies. Evaluate the ports of call, shore excursions, and duration of stay in each destination. This step is crucial in ensuring that the cruise itinerary aligns with your interests and provides the experiences you seek.

For instance, if you’re interested in exploring picturesque villages along the Rhine River, look for cruises that include stops in charming towns like Rüdesheim or Strasbourg. Conversely, if you prefer larger cities with rich history, focus on itineraries that feature ports such as Budapest, Vienna, or Amsterdam.

By carefully considering your cruise criteria and understanding the itineraries and routes offered by various river cruise companies in Europe, you can make an informed decision that leads to a memorable and fulfilling travel experience.

Comparing Price Points

When assessing price points among European river cruise companies, it’s crucial to compare the overall value you’ll receive for what you pay. While some companies may offer lower base fares, they might charge extra for amenities or excursions that are included in higher-priced packages. Be sure to check what’s included in the fare, such as meals, beverages, excursions, and onboard activities, to determine the total cost and value of each cruise.

Onboard Amenities and Accommodations

The onboard experience plays a significant role in your river cruise enjoyment. Look into the amenities and accommodations offered by each company to see which align with your preferences. Consider aspects like cabin sizes, onboard facilities (such as restaurants, gyms, spas, and lounges), entertainment options, and the overall ambiance of the ships. Some companies focus on luxury and personalized service, while others prioritize a more casual and laid-back atmosphere.

Excursion Types and Cultural Experiences

One of the highlights of a European river cruise is the opportunity to explore different destinations along the way. Compare the types of excursions and cultural experiences offered by each company to ensure they match your interests. Some companies may focus on enriching cultural immersions, with expert-led tours, visits to historical sites, and interactions with locals. Others may offer more relaxed excursions that allow for independent exploration or leisure activities. Determine which style of excursions resonates with you and enhances your overall cruise experience.

'I had never been on a river cruise before and I can tell you I was so impressed'

By Shaynna Blaze | 13 hours ago

After another great experience filming The Block this year I was so thrilled to be off on my first ever Getaway trip.

And honestly, it could not have been better - all the glory of a European summer, cruising the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers onboard Emerald Destiny from Amsterdam to Budapest.

I had never been to Amsterdam before and by day one I was already smitten - with its charming canals, vibrant art scene and distinct architecture, it's just one big vibe! Starting my visit with a canal cruise was the best way to get my bearings and admire the beautiful canal houses.

It is a city famous for being bicycle friendly so I grabbed an ebike and pedalled my way to Waterland, just a short ferry ride from the city. Seeing my first windmill in the wild was great and the apple pie at the end made all the pedalling worth it.

Watch the video above.

Not only had I never been to Amsterdam but I had never been on a river cruise and I can tell you I was so impressed. Emerald Cruises offers the perfect experience with so many stops along the way to discover and explore, plus loads of time to relax onboard.

The suites are designed for the ultimate in guest comfort and it's such a treat to only have to unpack once. The sun deck is a great spot to watch the action on the river pass you by but the dining options also have great views and exceptional food.

Next we cruised into Germany and the bustling city of Cologne. The cathedral is by far the most impressive monument with its Gothic architecture and sublime interiors but I was very keen to try the local speciality - Kolsch beer. It's quite a light and crisp beer and perfect for me who hadn't drunk a beer for about 20 years, but when in Germany…..

Back onboard and it was time to cruise through what I believe was the most spectacular part of the trip - the Rhine Gorge, with its fairytale scenery, castles and fortresses at every turn. It was a great chance to chat to the other guests up on the sun deck as we motored through to Rudesheim, possibly the most lovely town along the river.

Rudesheim is home to one of the quirkiest museums ever - Siegfried's Mechanical Music Museum, one of the largest collections of mechanical music boxes in the world. Lovely Mary, who works there, took great joy in showing me some of the different music boxes, including the Phonoliszt-Violina, and I have to say, I really loved it.

After a morning yoga class onboard Emerald Destiny we cruised into our next port of call, Miltenburg. Famous for its local castle built around 1200 and its half-timbered houses, still in original condition, and dating back as far as the 14th century.

At this point of the trip this was most definitely my favourite town - it was just so pretty, quaint and authentic.

One thing I was not expecting on this trip was a take-home glass fish that I helped create. In the next town of Wertheim there is a centuries old glass blowing tradition and I was lucky enough to meet Ralf who let me help create the cutest little fish. It was one of the EmeraldPLUS experiences on our cruise and it was most definitely a highlight.

Still in Germany and our next stop was Wurzburg . Bit of a behind the scenes story here, but I had to do all the voiceovers for this part of the story again as we worked out we'd recorded the word Wurzburg wrong. I think there are a few ways to say it but we've gone with "Vertz-borg", said in my best German accent.

Now I absolutely loved it there, especially the Wurzburg Residence. The interiors of this palace are like nothing I've seen, I actually got goosebumps when I walked in. It was a very special experience.

Breakfast was my favourite meal on the ship, especially sitting outside enjoying the passing view but all the food onboard is top notch. Meals were a great time to mix and mingle with the other guests and exchange stories of tour highlights.

shaynna blaze europe river cruise emerald on getaway

After Miltenburg and Wurzburg there were still a few more "burgs/bergs" to visit and the next was Bamberg. It's like a picture book where the entire old town is UNESCO listed and the architectural highlights are many, including the New Residence which served as the seat of Bamberg's Prince Bishops until the early 1800s and is a glimpse into their lavish lifestyles with opulent furnishings and even more extravagant gardens.

Nuremberg has a much more sombre history than the other bergs as it was one of the most bombed cities in WWII - 92 per cent of the old town was completely destroyed and then later repaired and rebuilt. It was the city of the nazi party rallies with up to a million people attending every year so it really was a target.

There are certainly still some lighter moments in this town. It has a wonderful Christmas market in the main square each year and it's also the home of lebkuchen, or gingerbread, and I can confirm it was delightful.

europe on cruise

One last burg on the list, Regensburg. It is one of Germany's oldest towns with a monument dating back to 179AD - quite unbelievable. There is a 12th century stone bridge also but surprisingly it's the sausage kitchen nearby that is more well-known. Now I don't eat meat but the crew gave it a good go and did tell me that the Regensburg sausage, with its sauerkraut, sweet mustard and caraway seed bun was one of the best.

Departing Germany and our next stop was Austria with our first port being Melk. Melk is known internationally for its Abbey, founded almost a thousand years ago when a castle was donated to the Benedictine monks and it's been a working monastery ever since. The interiors are phenomenal and the library is filled with 90,000 books and rare manuscripts.

I actually hopped off the ship with an ebike in Melk so had the ride the 32kms up to Durnstein, through charming villages, rolling vineyards, lush countryside and some of the most glorious apricot trees I've ever seen. There were little roadside stands with apricots for sale and they were just divine.

Now I can't give it all away but there is another leg to this trip still to come and it's just as amazing. I continue further into Austria and then across to stunning Slovakia, before finishing up in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.

Watch Getaway tonight at 5:30pm on 9 and 9Now to see Shaynna's second Europe episode.

A perfect day in Dubrovnik

Any day in this captivating croatian city is a day well spent. from coffee to cable cars, here’s how to get the most out of your time in dubrovnik.

Editorial Team

One look at Dubrovnik and you’ll understand why it’s called the ‘pearl of the Adriatic’. The city is fairy-tale pretty: century-spanning architecture, cobbled streets and terracotta rooftops surrounded by impeccably preserved city walls and the sparkling Adriatic beyond are so idyllic, at times it feels like you’ve stumbled into a film set. Once your feet are back on solid ground, here are a few tips to help you plot your picture-perfect day.

View all cruises to Dubrovnik here .

  • 9am: Walk through the Pile Gate
  • 9.30am: Coffee at Cogito
  • 10am: Explore the Old Town
  • 1pm: Lunch at Gradska Kavana Arsenal
  • 2.30pm: Ride the cable car
  • 3.30pm: Sightsee, swim or snap pics at West Harbour

1.  9am: Walk through the Pile Gate

There are a few ways to enter the Old Town, but none more iconic than through the main entrance, the Pile Gate. What was once a wooden drawbridge has now (rather reasonably) been replaced with a stone footbridge that takes you across a garden (formerly a moat) before you pass under a 16th-century archway and into the Old Town and to the Stradun, the main street. On your way in, look up to see a statue of statue of the city’s patron saint, St Blaise. (For fans of the TV series Game of Thrones, this is the first of many recognisable filming spots.)

2.  9.30am: Coffee at Cogito

Grabbing a morning brew at Cogito isn’t your typical café experience – this is your daily caffeine fix, Dubrovnik style. The bijou café is tucked town a quiet, cobbled street in the heart of the Old Town, under a medieval arch with its door and window carved into the stone walls. And what they brew up is just as special – espresso, filter and cold brew coffee made with responsibly traded beans roasted at their sister site in Zagreb, plus a selection of organic fair-trade teas, too. Grab a cup, sit on the bench outside and watch the morning unfold.

Address: Stajeva ul. 5, 20000, Dubrovnik.

3.  10am: Explore the Old Town

Once you’re suitably caffeinated, spend a few hours exploring the many jewels of the perfectly preserved Old Town. Start by following your ears to the clock tower, where the bronze statues of warriors Maro and Baro ring the bells that will become the soundtrack to your visit. Turn your head and you’ll see the Baroque Church of Saint Blaise; head inside to find a statue of him holding a model of Dubrovnik as it looked before the earthquake in 1667. Turn again and you’ll find Sponza Palace, a beautiful Gothic/Renaissance building that houses the state archives. A five-minute stroll down the Stradun brings you to the Franciscan monastery with its cool cloisters, which houses one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe. Or just stroll the cobbled streets and revel in the sweet agony of choosing where to buy gelato – a tough decision, but you can’t go wrong with either Peppino’s or Gianni.

Statue of Saint Blaise on top of the facade of the baroque Church of St. Blaise in the old city of Dubrovnik. The saint shows in his left hand a scale model of the Romanesque church which was destroyed by the earthquake in 1667.

4.  1pm: Lunch at Gradska Kavana Arsenal

With the Old Harbour as its backdrop on one side and atmospheric Old Town streets on the other, Gradska Kavana Arsenal Restaurant and Bar might just be the most beautifully set restaurant in Dubrovnik. And though it could probably get away with resting on its laurels based on that location alone, fortunately it doesn’t – the menu is just as appealing. Grab a table on the terrace and dive into beautifully presented, flavour-packed seafood dishes such as octopus salad with capers, purple onion and tomatoes; or a creamy bowl of truffle and mushroom linguine, all washed down with a glass of crisp Croatian Malvasija.

Address: Ul. Pred Dvorom 1, 20000, Dubrovnik

5.  2.30pm: Ride the cable car

Get the lay of the land from Mount Srd, the low mountain that forms Dubrovnik’s dramatic backdrop. A smooth ride of just three-and-a-half minutes whisks you from the cable car station to the top of the hill, where you can get a bird’s-eye view of the city’s iconic terracotta rooftops, the entirety of the 2-kilometre-long city walls, the islands dotting the coastline and the gemstone-blue Adriatic stretching as far as the eye can see. Grab a cold drink at the restaurant at the summit; from there you could zip back down in another few minutes on the cable car, or if you want to extend those views, it’s a 40-minute walk back downhill.

Top shore excursion recommendation: Cable car and Cavtat

Soar above Dubrovnik's iconic Old Town on a thrilling cable car ride. Take in panoramic city views and peaceful countryside before descending to charming Cavtat. Explore this Adriatic gem with its stunning beaches, historic architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. Relax with a coffee or gelato as you soak up the Mediterranean charm.

6.  3.30pm: Sightsee, swim or snap pics at West Harbour

Before bidding farewell to Dubrovnik, get a glimpse of it from what is quite possibly the most beautiful angle at West Harbour, just a short walk from Pile Gate. Wander down to the waterfront and stroll down the stone pier, then hike up the pine-scented hill to the side of Fort Lovrijenac, a defensive fort thought to date back to the 11th century, and look out to see a truly breathtaking view of the city surrounded by kayakers and bobbing boats in the harbour. On the other side of the fort is Šulić beach – if you come prepared for a swim (we recommend water shoes, too), you could even wander down and join the locals for a cooling dip off the rocks.

Greece to Restrict Cruise Visits as Islands Struggle With Tourist Crowds

In a country where vacationers are a keystone of the economy, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is embracing a European trend toward tighter tourism regulation.

A throng of tourists in front of whitewashed buildings in the golden light of a Greek sunset. Many are taking selfies.

By Niki Kitsantonis

With the treasures of its history, the beauty of its islands and the golden sands of its beaches, Greece offers tourists many reasons to visit. But a seemingly endless influx in recent years has caused headaches at some of its most popular destinations.

So this weekend, its prime minister proposed an array of measures aimed at curbing some effects of the growing crowds.

The changes include hefty increases to docking fees for cruise ships at some of Greece’s most popular islands, and limits to daily cruise ship arrivals. The rules aim to reduce the strain that the vacation industry places on communities and echo a pushback against overtourism in several other major European destinations.

“Tourism supports the economy with significant resources and jobs, but it has its own particular social impact,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during his annual state of the economy speech in Thessaloniki on Saturday night. He added that he was “very concerned about the image on some of our islands some months of the year due to cruise ships.”

More details will be announced next week, he said.

Discontent over tourism has flared across Europe since pandemic-related travel restrictions receded. In April, Venice introduced an entry fee of 5 euros , about $5.50, on certain days. In July, protesters in Barcelona marched in exasperation with tourist numbers .

And after those cities diverted cruises from busy ports, officials in Amsterdam decided to cut cruise traffic in half by 2026, before eventually closing its terminal , citing worries about overcrowding and pollution.

The issue carries particularly high stakes in Greece, where tourism accounts for about a fifth of economic output. A record 33 million people visited last year, according to the Bank of Greece , which said numbers were up a further 15.5 percent in the first half of 2024.

Vacation rentals and foreign buyers have also driven home prices to a level that many locals say they struggle to afford on many islands , while a wave of villa construction has contributed to water shortages.

“We’ve had yet another extremely successful tourism year,” Mr. Mitsotakis said, noting that the sector was going “from record to record.”

To address overcrowding, disembarkation fees for cruises would be increased, he said, with larger rises for particularly popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini, where the authorities and residents have been pushing for constraints.

Fees will rise to 20 euros for those islands during the high season, he told a news conference on Sunday, a steep hike from the current charge of 35 cents for Santorini. Some of the additional revenue will go toward local infrastructure, he said.

The government will also increase a lodging tax paid by hotels and rental accommodations on the islands, with those proceeds going toward local communities to help them during the peak season, Mr. Mitsotakis said.

And property owners who offer long-term leases, rather than the short-term rentals generally given to international visitors, will be exempt from paying rental tax for three years, he said.

Mr. Mitsotakis also heralded restrictions, to be announced in coming weeks, on runaway construction on the most overdeveloped islands, apparently targeting vacation homes. “Let’s take action and put the brakes, wherever needed, on islands where we believe that the situation has reached a point that the infrastructure is essentially being tested,” he told reporters.

The cruise industry is booming in Greece, with a projected increase of 20 percent in ship arrivals this year, totaling more than eight million passengers, according to Giorgos Koubenas, the president of Greece’s union of cruise-ship owners, who said revenues this year were projected at €2 billion.

Santorini, with its volcanic beaches and dramatic caldera, is Greece’s most popular cruise destination, with 1.3 million cruise visitors last year, according to the Hellenic Ports Association. An official there provoked an angry backlash on a particularly busy July day when he urged residents — population 15,500 — to stay home to make way for an expected 17,000 visitors.

The mayor, Nikos Zorzos, said that the authorities did what they could to keep daily visitors under 8,000, but that itineraries were set two years in advance, causing some “very difficult days.”

“It’s important that each island has the ability to regulate the situation locally,” he said, “that local authorities have control in such significant issues that directly influence the daily lives of residents.”

Some residents of smaller islands, however, say they fear that restrictions will push the problems of cruise traffic onto them.

“I’m very worried,” said Thodoris Halaris, a 64-year-old resident of Amorgos, an island of about 2,000 that received its first large cruise ship last month. Cruises risk crowding out the regular visitors he rents to, he said, and don’t suit the island’s relatively small beaches.

“It’s like the theater of the absurd,” he said. “Fifty people swimming on a beach and a 250-meter cruise ship docked in front of them.”

Konstantinos Revinthis, the mayor of Serifos, said he was persuaded to oppose cruise visits after a medium-size liner brought some 2,000 passengers to his island of roughly 1,000.

“We don’t have the infrastructure to host so many people,” he said.
