Taj mahal sunrise visit, desert camping, hindi language lesson, sunset ghat boat tour, monkey temple, blue city tour, for only £100, full itinerary, day 1: new delhi.

Welcome to New Delhi – and the start of your India group tour! You’ll meet your group and Adventure Leader this morning, where you’ll get a trip briefing to lay out your fortnight’s travels and tips on staying safe in India.

After this, it’s off to your first unmissable experience – a Hindi language lesson. Your local guide will take you through the basics and key phrases that you’ll need for your next two weeks. From there, it’s off for a tour of the city’s highlights. You’ll visit Old Delhi and its temples and spice markets, Connaught Place in the downtown district, and the beautiful Sri Bangla Sahib Gurdwara.

This evening, explore the area to grab yourself some dinner – and don’t forget to ask your Adventure Leader for tips!

Day 2: New Delhi

Today is yours to spend as you see fit. However, we’d recommend spending a relaxing morning at the Lodhi Garden, followed by a visit to the Khan Market. Be sure to seek out the India Gate, and the Aagrasen ki Baoli – the oldest monument in Central Delhi.

This afternoon, you’ve got plenty of options to explore. Why not pay a visit to:

  • Aksardham, a beautiful Hindu temple
  • Qutub Minar, a  UNESCO World Heritage Site  in the Mehrauli area of Delhi
  • Raj Ghat, a memorial complex dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi
  • The Lotus Temple, whose iconic design makes it a must-see
  • Humayun’s Tomb, the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent

Make sure you’re back in good time, though, as you’ll be travelling overnight on the night train to Varanasi – destination #2 on our India group tour!

Day 3: Varanasi

After arriving in Varanasi this morning, you’ll transfer to your next accommodation where you’ll have some time to rest and freshen up. You’ll then meet your Adventure Leader for your second Hindi language lesson, where you can build on what you’ve already learned.

If you’re feeling bright enough, you can opt to pay a visit to the Sarnath Buddhist and Hindu archaelogical site. According to tradition, Sarnath is where Buddha taught his first sermon, and is today home to some truly remarkable preserved artefacts and sites.

You’ll all meet up this evening, though, for your next unmissable experience. What better way to greet Varanasi than with a Ghat boat tour, complete with the Ganga Aarti ceremony? After the ceremony, you’ll disembark at the Dasawamedh Ghat, where you can opt to join your group for dinner before returning to get some well deserved sleep!

Day 4: Varanasi

Your second day in Varanasi starts on the water again, as you can opt to join your group for a sunrise boat tour to grab some truly spectacular views. After this, you’ll meet back up with your Adventure Leader where you’ll have the opportunity to ask them any burning questions.

This afternoon, you might opt to join your group for a walk around the old market in Varanasi. This is a great way to close out your time in Varanasi before you move onto your next destination via night train – Agra!

Day 5: Agra

After arriving in Agra this morning, transfer to your new accommodation to get some well-deserved rest. If you need time at your leisure, you can rest up today. Otherwise, why not join us for an optional trip this afternoon? Head out to Agra Fort and the Baby Taj for a glimpse of Agra’s spectacular architecture.

If you’d like, this evening join your group for dinner and drinks at the fabulous Salt Café. You might want to take it easy, though – you’ve got an early start!

Day 6: Jaipur

Before we head off to Jaipur, it’s up early for a sunrise visit to the most famous site in India – the Taj Mahal! Explore this incredible complex as the sun rises, and be back in time to grab your private transfer to Jaipur.

After checking in here, jump on the bus to Nahagarth Fort, which features one of the most amazing viewpoints from which to watch the sun set. If you’re hungry, join your group for dinner this evening.

Day 7: Jaipur

Are you an early riser? If so, you might want to capitalise on this with one of the most exciting options to start the day: a balloon safari! Otherwise, wake up in your own time this morning and grab breakfast, before opting to visit the spectacular Amber Palace, which is built entirely of yellow and pink sandstone.

This afternoon is yours to spend as you see fit. You might want to explore the City Palace and the next-door Hawa Mahal, the Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory, or get your fill of shopping at the Bapu Bazaar. After this, you can opt to meet your group for an early evening food court tour to grab some local delicacies, before exploring the nightlife that Jaipur has to offer.

Day 8: Jaipur

Another early start, as you’re up with the birds for another unmissable activity – a trip to the Monkey Temple! This temple is an incredible site that’s often a Hindu pilgrimage, and features incredible architecture, beautiful landscapes… and monkeys!

For the rest of the morning, you can either spend it at your resting up, exploring the Pink City, or taking part in a fabulous dance class!

This afternoon, we’ll transfer to Jaipur station, bound for the next stop on our India group tour: Jaisalmer!

Day 9: Jaisalmer

You’ll arrive in Jaisalmer this morning. You can head to a local hostel for a rest and to grab some breakfast, before opting to join us as we explore the fascinating Jaisalmer Fort. This amazing structure is 250 feet tall in places, and parts of it date back to the mid-1600s! You can then opt to head to a remarkable viewpoint in the local area – Gadsisar Lake!

It’s a flying visit though, as we’re taking you into the Thar desert for your next unmissable activity – and arguably, the jewel of your India adventure tour. Transfer by jeep into the desert, where you’ll take part in a camel trek that leads you to the site of your camp. Here, you’ll have dinner al fresco, and set up your comfortable beds, ready for a night sleeping under the stars.

Day 10: Jodhpur

There’s no escaping the sunrise this morning, as it’ll wake you gently from your spot in the desert. After preparing a breakfast and packing up, you’ll head back to the city, ready to transfer to Jodhpur.

After your private transfer arrives, you’ll check in to your next hostel and drop your things. We’ll then take you on tour to orientate yourself in the Blue City, where you’ll see landmarks like the Clock Tower and the fascinating Toorji Ka Jhalra – the ancient step well.

This evening, feel free to join your group near Stepwell for a drink.

Day 11: Jodphur

Today’s a free day to spend as you see fit! If you’d like to join us for an optional activity, however, you might opt for:

  • A cooking class, where you’ll learn about the history of Indian food and its place in wider culture. You’ll develop an appreciation for the flavours of true traditional Indian cuisine.
  • A pulse-raising Flying Fox zip line experience! Whiz across the city and the fort, getting both incredible views and a real adrenaline rush.

This evening, why not meet your group for a drink atop the hostel?

Day 12: Mumbai

Late morning today, you’ll fly to your final destination on the India group tour: Mumbai!

You’ll spend the day transferring to your accommodation, arriving in the late afternoon – just in time for movie night! This evening, why not grab a view of the city from a roof top bar?

Day 13: Mumbai

If you’d like to learn more about local life in Mumbai, opt to join us this morning for a tour of the Dharavi Slum. You’ll also get the chance to visit the Dhobi Ghat Malaxmi – the largest outdoor laundry in the entire world!

This afternoon, meet up with your group for an unmissable tour of Mumbai. Along the way, you’ll explore must-see sites like the Gateway of India and the Coloba District. In the evening, you might opt to spend your last night with the group exploring all the exciting nightlife that Mumbai has to offer.

Day 14: Farewell

This morning, before we all go our separate ways, you can opt to join us for a trip to the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum, dedicated to the life and works of Gandhi. Otherwise, your day is at your leisure – and it’s just left to bid farewell to your group as your India group tour comes to an end.

Day 2: Delhi. (Breakfast and Lunch)       Overnight – Taj Palace, New Delhi

Qutab Minar. Start your exploration of New Delhi with a drive to the awe-inspiring 12th century Qutab Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Delhi has over 500 ancient structures strewn over its vast expanse, with many of them in various states of disrepair. For mankind’s achievements from about a millennium ago, the Qutab Minar is unmatched in its architectural brilliance and longevity. This 240 ft tall medieval tower is a symbol of victory and a spectacular example of Persian architecture, with intricate carvings and gorgeous inlaid calligraphy.

Qutab Minar

Qutab Minar

Iron Pillar. Within the Qutab complex, amidst the ruins of the Quwat-ul-Islam Mosque, stands the legendary 2500-year-old Iron Pillar. The pillar stands 23 feet and 8 inches tall, weighs about 7000 pounds, and has inscriptions that are still legible to a great extent. This massive cast iron structure is said to have been moved from its distant cave shelter to Delhi around the 12th century.

India Gate

You will stop for a view of the exterior of the massive and awe-inspiring Rashtrapati Bhawan, which was known as the Viceroy’s House during the British era.

Lutyens’s New Delhi. From here you will proceed for a drive through some of Lutyens’ historic New Delhi. Your drive will take you through Delhi’s Diplomatic Enclave on tree lined avenues surrounded by embassies of the world’s major nations. You will stop for a view of the exterior of the massive and awe-inspiring Rashtrapati Bhawan, home to Inia’s President. From here one can enjoy a striking view of the India Gate at the other end of majestic and historic Rajpath, the former Kingsway. After a very short drive on Rajpath you will arrive at the India Gate, a War Memorial to the 84,000 British Indian Army soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War, and Indian casualties in other wars.

Humayun's Tomb Front

Front View of Humayun's Tomb

It is one of Delhi’s three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and its striking beauty and flawless proportions will captivate you.

Humayun’s Tomb (UWHS). After a break for lunch, continue with a visit to the magnificent tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Delhi has such an abundance of amazing monuments that this Tomb Complex (1562 A.D.) does not quite get the acclaim that it deserves - its striking beauty and flawless proportions will captivate you.

Lodi Gardens. A short drive will bring you to the historic and beautiful Lodi Gardens. This massive garden complex is spread over 90 acres of priceless real estate in the heart of Delhi, and contains the tombs of various rulers of the Pashtun Dynasty that ruled much of Northern India during the 16th century. There are lush lawns and a plethora of flowers and plants mixed in with all the monuments.

Street Art District. Very near the gardens is the Lodi Art District, your last destination before returning to your hotel. Delhi isn’t famous for its street art and murals, and the large amount of street art found all over this upscale part of the city will both surprise and delight you. The subject matter ranges from quirky to distinctly ethnic Indian and there will be surprises around every corner. (Overnight – Taj Palace, New Delhi)

Day 3: Delhi. (Breakfast and Lunch)       Overnight – Taj Palace, New Delhi

Old Delhi: A slightly early breakfast will reward you with a lot less traffic on your way to see some of the achievements of one of our planet’s greatest ruling dynasties ever – India’s legendary Mughal Empire . For centuries, their shadow stretched over a vast region well beyond India, and you will experience much more than their 3 most famous creations, the Taj Mahal, Red Fort, and Agra Fort. North India’s cultures, cuisines, racial makeup, and a lot more is heavily influenced by the Mughal’s long rule. The result is an incredible fusion of cultures and styles in the cuisine, fine arts, architecture, social taboos, and a lot more.

Red Fort. Start your discovery of Old Delhi at the awe-inspiring Red Fort. The great city inside the massive sandstone walls of the Red Fort offers visitors a large number of architectural and historical attractions. The Red Fort was the seat of the Mughal Empire for more than two hundred and fifty years and is obviously a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an amazing example of a blend of Persian, Indian and European architecture. Both this fortified city and the Jama Masjid (that you will visit later today) were built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor who created the Taj Mahal.

Lunch. After this you will drive close by for lunch at the historic Curzon Room in the century old Maidens Hotel.

Chandni Chowk Bazaar. One of your most enduring memories of India will be your next experience as you walk through the ancient (from the time of the Mughals) Chandni Chowk Bazaar, home to the world’s largest spice market. The cacophony of sounds which have echoed through the centuries, the cries of hawkers and the animated bargaining, along with the incredible colors and the diverse smells emanating from the street food stalls and spice markets combine to make for an experience that is unique to this ancient bazaar.

Jama Masjid

Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Nobles), Red Fort

Jama Masjid + E-Rickshaw Ride. This will be followed by an e-rickshaw ride which ends at the Jama Masjid (1650 A.D.), the largest mosque in India. The Masjid is a magnificent example of Mughal architecture and is constructed of red sandstone and white marble. It is an active place of worship and its courtyard can hold 25,000 worshippers. Bare legs and shoulders are not permitted inside the mosque and we include rented sarongs and scarves. After exploring the mosque, you will avoid the worst of Delhi’s rush hour on the drive back to your hotel. (Overnight – Taj Palace, New Delhi)

Day 4: Delhi – Agra. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – IHCL Tajview Hotel by Taj Hotels

Drive. After a slightly early breakfast (so as to avoid Delhi’s notorious rush hour traffic which starts in earnest after 8:30am), you are assisted with your check-out from your hotel and now you proceed on the drive to Agra, much of which is on an elevated tollway that allows for interesting views of the farmland and villages surrounding it.

Agra Fort (UWHS). Arrive at Agra and you are driven to the first red sandstone fort of North India, the Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an amazing example of a blend of Persian, Indian and European architecture and was built in 1565 by India’s greatest Mughal ruler, Emperor Akbar. Its royal audience halls, immense stone courtyards, marble mosque and the private royal chambers give us a glimpse of the grandeur of the Mughal Empire. There are unique views of the Taj Mahal from a section of the fort, including the room where the Taj Mahal’s creator, Emperor Shah Jahan, was imprisoned during the later years of his life by his infamous son and successor, Aurangzeb.

Lunch and Check-in. will be at an acclaimed restaurant that offers great Indian cuisine and a small selection of very good western food options. After lunch you will return to your hotel and be assisted with your check-in. proceed to your hotel. At this moderately upscale hotel, you will stay in renovated larger rooms that offer some of Agra’s best views of the Taj Mahal.

Taj Mahal at midday

Taj Mahal at midday

After exploring the fort you will proceed for a late afternoon visit to the Taj Mahal. Experience the amazing Taj and its surroundings in bright sunlight, culminating with an opportunity to admire the sun’s rays setting on the façade of the world’s finest monument.

Sunset at the Taj Mahal (UWHS). You will proceed nearby for a late afternoon visit to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the incomparable Taj Mahal. Experience the amazing Taj and its surroundings in bright sunlight, culminating with an opportunity to admire the sun’s rays setting on the façade of the world’s finest monument. The Taj Mahal was completed by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1653 A.D. as a memorial to his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal. This spectacular white marble mausoleum was created by about 22,000 skilled craftsmen, many of whom were brought here from far away nations, and it took twenty two years to complete. (Overnight – IHCL Tajview Hotel by Taj Hotels)

Day 5: Agra – Ranthambore (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)       Overnight – IHCL Sawai Madhopur Lodge

Sunrise at the Taj Mahal. A sunrise visit as morning is the best time to experience it in terms of crowds - it is more expensive for Indian tourists to enter at this early hour and so the massive monument and its surrounding Mughal gardens have a lot fewer visitors than the rest of the day. As the rising sun’s rays illuminate the precious stones inlaid in the marble they will gleam momentarily and change colors.

Chand Baori Stepwell. Return to your hotel in time for breakfast and to prepare for the day’s journey, after which you are driven to the Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri, located just off the highway to Jaipur. The massive 10th century Chand Baori Stepwell is one of the most impressive in all of India and is located next to a charming Rajasthani village. The depth of the stepwell is that of a modern 7 story building, and there are stairs (no longer accessible to visitors) leading down to the bottom from three of the 100 foot plus wide (35 meters) sides, creating symmetry and beauty to the ancient structure.

Drive on to Ranthambore. After a stop for lunch, you will continue on with your journey to Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambore National Park). Much of this drive is through rural Rajasthan and there are colorful villagers around you going about their daily activities. You will also encounter many camels and other livestock on this drive. Since 2006 Easy Tours of India has tracked the percentage of tiger sightings for our guests in Ranthambore National Park. More than 85% of our guests have had tiger sightings during this period, with most of them getting multiple sightings. (Overnight – IHCL Sawai Madhopur Lodge)

Day 6: Ranthambore (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – IHCL Sawai Madhopur Lodge

The Wildlife Sanctuary. Covering an area of 410 square kilometers, Ranthambore National Park runs along the eastern spur of the Aravalli Mountain range until it meets with the Vindhya ranges. Ranthambore was once the Jaipur rulers’ private hunting ground. In 1972 it was declared a Sanctuary and was brought under the Project Tiger Conservation platform. Dry deciduous forest covers most of the park, and the vegetation is lush around the many small lakes and ponds. The open grasslands that are the tiger’s favorite terrain account for much of the land on the higher slopes. This varied flora supports a large number of animals including a variety of deer and antelope, crocodiles, the sloth bear, over 320 species of birds, leopards and one of India’s highest densities of the Bengal Tiger.

Alpha Male Tiger at Ranthambore

Alpha Male Tiger at Ranthambore

Large Male Leopard at Ranthambore

Morning Jeep Safari. As in all of India’s National Wildlife Parks, safaris are operated by the Forest Department with their naturalists and department regulated drivers.

Afternoon Jeep Safari. Safaris are usually about 3.5-to-4-hour excursions from your lodge.

Ranthambore Fort. Guests who want can join their Guide for an earlier start after lunch and visit the Ranthambore Fort. The steps to the Fort are located next to the Park Entry Gate, and you will be able to board your safari vehicle after visiting the Fort.

This excursion does have a fairly steep climb with almost 300 stairs that are always surrounded by dozens of monkeys. The massive Fort is one of the finest examples of the ancient Hindu concept of Vana-Durg, or a fort protected by a jungle. The history of this Fort (built in 944 A.D.) is a chronicle full of tales of blood and valor. Successively occupied by the Muslims, Rajput’s and Mughals, the insides of the fort today lie partly in ruin. There are superb views of the park to be had from its ramparts. There is also an ancient temple located in the fort which attracts a continuous stream of pilgrims from the surrounding villages. A note of caution – a large number of aggressive langurs (a larger than average South Asian monkey) have made the Fort area their home and it is not advisable to have food or shiny objects visible as you tour the fort as such items will be aggressively snatched away, and this could cause injury. (Overnight – IHCL Tajview Hotel by Taj Hotels)

Day 7: Ranthambore – Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Jai Mahal Palace

Morning Jeep Safari. Enjoy your last jeep safari into Ranthambore in the morning. Return to your resort after the safari to freshen up and have breakfast. You are assisted with your check-out from your jungle lodge and then there is a break for lunch.

Drive to Jaipur (UWHC). After lunch you are driven to Jaipur. Arrive at Jaipur and you are assisted with your check-in at your beautiful and historic palace hotel. You are in the center of Jaipur, and most of your sightseeing is fairly easy to reach despite the city’s bustling traffic. (Overnight – Jai Mahal Palace)

Day 8: Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Jai Mahal Palace

Pink City Exploration. Begin your exploration of the walled pink city of Jaipur. You will start with a stroll through the fascinating main bazaar in the heart of the pink city, and watch the locals as they shop for pretty much everything a consumer can possibly want. This atmospheric and crowded bazaar has street sellers of vegetables, fruit and other goods occupying the curbs with their displays. There are stores selling spices, nuts, flowers, toys, footwear, hardware, and a lot more, mixed in with street food vendors and brick and mortar eating establishments. Byzantine alleys lead into inner courtyard shops.

Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal. After a few minutes of walking, you will arrive at the most photographed of Jaipur’s monuments, the enchanting Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Wind). This intriguing facade was built in 1799 so that the ladies of the court could use its unique windows and observe the bustling bazaar without being visible to the people on the streets. There is a break for lunch in a top-rated restaurant nearby.

Jantar Mantar. After lunch you will proceed for a visit to the Jantar Mantar (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), a fascinating stone observatory built in 1728. Among other instruments, it includes a massive stone sun dial that is accurate to within 2 seconds.

City Palace. Located next to Jantar Mantar is the City Palace, the royal residence that was built in a delightful blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles. A part of this massive complex is still occupied by the Royal family and is not accessible to the public. Your Tour Director will regale you with stories of royalty as you admire their trappings. This immense complex also houses a number of museums that include displays of armor, miniature paintings, and a large and impressive collection of ancient royal garments and accoutrements. (Overnight – Jai Mahal Palace)

Day 9: Jaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Jai Mahal Palace

Albert Hall. Today will include three of Jaipur’s significant attractions, which also happen to be among the most wonderful opportunities for photography in India. First you are driven to a very scenic location in Jaipur adjacent to a public park, The Albert Hall Museum, which was completed in 1887 by the architect Samuel Swinton Jacob. You won’t enter the museum as this stop is solely for you to walk around and take-in the absolutely gorgeous Indo-Saracenic architecture. Rudyard Kipling (himself the son of a museum curator) on a visit was so impressed that he wrote "it is now a rebuke to all other museums in India from Calcutta downwards".

Part of Galtaji Temple Complex

Part of Galtaji (Monkey) Temple Complex

Monkey Temple. Monkey Temple. From here you are driven to the ancient Hindu pilgrimage site of Galtaji, located in a crevice in the Aravalli Hills. This 15th century complex of temples here is sometimes referred to as the Monkey Temple by tourists because a large tribe of monkeys lives here and believes they own the complex. The picturesque complex of temples has seven ponds that are fed by springs on the surrounding hilltops, and Hindu pilgrims consider taking a dip in these to be purifying. The beautiful temple complex has been a retreat for a sect of Hindu ascetics since the 16th century. The monkeys agree and swim around the main pond with reckless abandon, and many of them can be seen diving into the tank from various vantage points. Enjoy a guided tour of the beautiful Galtaji Temple, which is crafted in pink stone. There are other ancient temples in the complex, and you will visit a couple of them, including the Balaji Temple. Monkeys are everywhere, and they are obviously in-charge! For someone not used to their social behavior and grooming rituals, observing them can be fascinating.

Amer Fort and Palace

Amer Fort and Palace

Amer Fort (UWHS). From here you will be driven to the Amer Fort & Palace Complex, breaking for lunch as you approach the hilltop forted city. After lunch you will explore the awe-inspiring and massive Amber Fort and Palace Complex. This complex was completed in 1599 AD after 25 years of construction. You will be driven to the back entrance as Easy Tours does not offer elephant-back ascents up the ramparts of the complex. The massive forted city inside the complex is one of India’s finest examples of Rajput architecture. You will explore the gorgeous chambers and hallways, which are famous for their exquisite designs and handcrafted embellishments. Your Guide will regale you with the history of the various structures as you take in the amazing workmanship of the craftsmen who created them.

Optional Shopping Excursion. You will return to your palace hotel in the mid-afternoon, and those who are interested have the option of a shopping stop along the way. Guests who are not interested will continue on and enjoy their palace’s facilities in the late afternoon. Jaipur is India’s shopping mecca for all sorts of exquisite hand-crafted items, fabrics, carpets, as well as jewelery. If some guests choose this stop, your guide will accompany you and your vehicle will return shortly to pick you up for the drive back to the palace. (Overnight – Jai Mahal Palace)

Day 10: Jaipur - Narlai. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)        Overnight – Rawla Narlai

16th Century Narlai Village. After a slightly early breakfast, you are driven to historic Rawla Narlai, a 17th century Royal Lodge located right in the middle of a wonderful and authentic ancient village. Rawla means Royal Palace, Narlai is the name of the village. Much of the so-called rural tourism offered in Rajasthan is at locales that receive a constant stream of visitors and most of their guest experiences are, at least partially, staged. This large 16th Century village (almost 6000 residents) of Narlai is about as real as it gets for observing a relatively well-off village’s daily activities and people.

Rajasthani Village

Rajasthani Village

Rawla Narlai. The ancient royal lodge has been meticulously restored by its owners, the Royal Family of Jodhpur, and calling it boutique would be a vast understatement. There are two wings – one being the original 17th Century hunting lodge, and a more modern wing that was built around two decades ago. Near the lodge and visible from various vantage points is a massive ancient volcanic granite boulder called Elephant Hill, with a historic small Hindu Temple at its peak, and many caves carved into its facade.

300 Year or 25-Year-Old Room? Please note although that the lodge rooms in the new wing are larger and have more modern conveniences and more natural light, we recommend the rooms in the ancient wing as their incredible historical charm is a unique experience not found elsewhere. However, if you prefer natural light and/or modern conveniences, we recommend the new wing. Rooms in both wings have upscale traditional Rajasthani artwork, furnishings and décor, and the heritage wing rooms obviously have more antiques. If you choose the new wing, you will still experience a lot of the 17th Century lodge’s original features. You will select your room preference soon after your tour reservation.

The cuisine served at the lodge is sourced from their own organic farms and orchards, as well as other farms surrounding the village. The chefs are attentive and will customize your meals to your preferences, and just like in every resort that you will stay in while in Rajasthan, there are live local cultural performances every evening.

Ancient Stepwell Magical Dinner Experience: After sunset you will be assisted in climbing aboard traditional bullock carts and transported through the dark countryside to a charming 16th Century stepwell. Your small group’s private magical dinner will be at the stepwell, accompanied by live local folk music and accented by hundreds of oil lamps adorning the steps of the stepwell. As you enjoy a multi-course dinner of local delicacies and the lodge’s attentive service, the oil lamps and countless stars will illuminate this amazing night. (Overnight – Rawla Narlai)

Day 11: Narlai – Udaipur. (Breakfast and Lunch)        Overnight – Taj Fateh Prakash Palace

Soft Adventure Options. Guests can select one of two activities for the early morning today, or choose to relax and sleep in. Couples and family/friends can temporarily separate to enjoy one or the other.

Climb Elephant Hill. The first option is to accompany one of the lodge stewards (they do this daily) up the 756 ancient hand carved steps that lead to the peak of Elephant Hill where you can enjoy the spectacular views and visit the small Hindu Temple. Your lodge steward will carry a hot beverage and snacks for your refreshment at the top of the boulder.

Large Male Leopard at Bandhavgarh

Large Male Leopard

Leopard Jeep Safari. The other option is to board one of the lodge’s jeeps with a lodge naturalist and head into the surrounding jungle in search of leopards, who are known to be elusive animals. Sightings of tigers at India’s better National Parks are much more frequent than leopards, but leopard sightings are fairly common around Narlai, which is not a National Park. At the least you will enjoy an adventure into small rural communities and the jungle. The ride is bumpy as you are traversing rough terrain.

In both cases you will return to the lodge to have a late delicious breakfast and then you can enjoy your fascinating surroundings for a little while. You will check out just before noon and, proceed on the drive to Udaipur, with a short diversion for a fascinating stop. A very short drive from Narlai will bring you to one of India’s least known architectural marvels, the 15th Century Ranakpur Jain Temple, which also happens to be an active place of worship.

Ranakpur Jain Temple. Explore the awe-inspiring marble temple complex. The main temple’s twenty-nine halls are supported by fourteen hundred and forty-four massive yet intricately carved marble pillars, and no two are of the same design. There is an abundance of intricate sculptures and friezes and the enormous scale of the monument and the exquisite details of its design have to be experienced to be believed.

Scenic Drive to Udaipur. You will break for lunch after exploring the temple complex. After lunch you will continue on with your journey to Udaipur. This is one of the most picturesque drives in all of India. As you go through the Aravalli hills there will be photo opportunities of village life and livestock, including many camels. The rolling landscape and the charm of the local villages and their colorful inhabitants will fascinate you during this 2.5-hour journey. Arrive at the City Palace of Udaipur, which is the city’s main attraction, and also your lakeside lodging.

Fateh Prakash Palace. The fabled City Palace Complex contains multiple old palaces and other structures. Your lodging, the Fateh Prakash Palace, is located on the complex’s picturesque lakeside. Your beautifully renovated historic rooms have traditional Jarokha windows that offer views of Lake Pichola and more. (Overnight – Taj Fateh Prakash Palace)

Day 12: Udaipur (Breakfast and Lunch).        Overnight – Taj Fateh Prakash Palace

Monsoon Palace. This morning you are driven to visit the Monsoon Palace, a small hilltop structure that offers amazing views of the picturesque city of Udaipur and its lakes and palaces. The journey up the hill takes you through a protected wildlife sanctuary and occasional small wildlife sightings can be experienced. After a few minutes exploring the historical structure, you will experience the spectacular view of the lakes and palaces of Udaipur, set picturesquely amidst the Aravalli Mountain range.

Udaipur Walk. Next up is an easy and delightful walk in the picturesque ancient part of the small city. With its small-town atmosphere, laid back Udaipur is one of India’s best places to explore on foot, and your guide will take you for walks in small local bazaars and other interesting parts of this charming city. Description

India is one of the most diverse countries in the world, be it culturally or geographically. From the several interesting terrains, to amazing cuisines, from the colorful cultural practices to some amazing historical monuments, this country has it all. When it comes exploring the cultures and history of India, taking a North India Group tour is one of the best ways to go about it. Starting the tour with the national capital Delhi, you get to witness some of the most interesting and beautiful monuments with influences of different eras, including the Mughal and British eras, there for everyone to admire. Monuments like Red Fort, Purana Qila, India Gate and others transport you to the eras gone by. Another major city included in a north India group tour is Jaipur, where the exceptional Rajputana architecture and culture welcome you. Hawa Mahal, Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar and City Palace are just some of the monuments that leave you marveling at their beauty. The Pink City is also popular for different bazaars like Bapu Bazaar, Johri Bazaar, Tripolia Bazaar and more. Moving on, for the fans of intricate stone carvings and architectural symbolism, Khajurao is the perfect destination. The plethora of stunning Hindu and Jain temples is sure to mesmerize you. Varanasi is another major destination covered in this tour, with the city being known as the spiritual center for Hindus across the world. The numerous temples lined up along the magnificent ghats make for a spectacular sight, while the spiritual experience of the place can be truly transcendent. Last, but definitely not the least, any tour across the northern parts of India is incomplete without visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra. The timeless symbol of love, this monument is sure to leave you speechless with its majestic white structure and beautiful architecture and design work.

Day 1 Delhi

Arrive at any time; your arrival transfer is included through Women With Wheels, a G Adventures–supported project.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 delhi/agra.

Set out to discover Delhi, the capital of India, which consists of two cities: historic Delhi and New Delhi, built by the British in the early 20th century. Explore New Delhi’s lively Paharganj district with a youth guide from the G Adventures–supported City Walk project, and hear about how the program provides opportunities to disadvantaged street youth. Then delve into the narrow, winding lanes of Old Delhi, visiting the 17th-century Jama Masjid—the largest mosque in India—and the Sikh temple Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, located close to a busy shopping area. Drive to Agra this afternoon.

Meals included:

Spend the day in historic Agra, which served as the capital of the Delhi sultanate and later of the Mughal Empire. Discover the Taj Mahal, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; widely considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, this breathtaking mausoleum was built by the emperor Shah Jahan for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Afterward, visit the exquisite tomb of Mumtaz Mahal’s grandfather, often referred to as the “baby Taj,” and explore Agra Fort, an impressive red sandstone citadel which conceals palaces of white marble within.

Day 4 AGRA/JAIPUR

Travel to Jaipur, the capital of the state of Rajasthan. On the way, stop at the magnificent Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, a masterpiece of red sandstone, and hear about its fascinating history. The emperor Akbar built a short-lived capital here in the 16th century to honour a Muslim saint from the village of Sikri who had predicted the birth of his son, Jehangir. Then visit the Rajasthani village of Abhaneri for a walk around the Chand Baori—an ornately decorated stepwell or water tank constructed over a thousand years ago—learning about ancient Indian methods of water conservation. Before arriving to your hotel, visit the Anoothi Project, a collective of women from a marginalised community outside Jaipur who have mastered the traditionally-male technique of block printing. Travelers will engage in a hands-on block printing experience and spend time with the women leading this experience to speak with them about the purpose of the collective and its impact on the community.

Day 5 Jaipur

Explore Jaipur, known as the “Pink City” for its rose-coloured buildings. Take a tour of the sprawling Amber Fort, the former residence of Jaipur’s Rajput rulers; and visit Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds, a stunning five-story sandstone building with distinctive honeycombed windows. We’ll also meet with a local historian to discuss India’s complex social fabric, customs, and architecture. Tonight, consider going to the cinema to watch a Bollywood movie—a truly unique experience.

Day 6 Jaipur/Pachewar

Drive to the rural village of Pachewar, where we stay in a beautiful heritage home. Exploring this traditional community is like stepping back in time: walk and meet with local residents, observing potters, silversmiths, and cobblers at work; wander amid old temples and mud homes, perhaps witnessing a cooking demonstration; and note how urbanization and modernization have altered village life.

Day 7 Pachewar/Delhi

Drive back to bustling Delhi. This evening, opt to join the group for a farewell dinner.

Golden Triangle Tour covering city sightseeing of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra.

A visit to Lumbini – the birthplace of Buddha.

Varanasi – boat ride at the famous Ghats and the evening aartis.

The 16-days tour to North India and Nepal begins at Delhi. You would be welcomed at the airport by our representative and would be transferred to hotel for check-in at 1200 hours.

Delhi has been a capital of many kingdoms from time to time. On your arrival, you would be transferred to your hotel. Inhabited since the 6th century BC, the city has been destroyed and built many times and is called the “city of cities”.

Delhi has been influenced by different cultures as ruled by different rulers which is portrayed in the amazingly constructed monuments, forts, minarets and also displayed in the variety of cuisine served and festivals celebrated. The Mughal rulers influenced the food habits of the residents since several decades and Delhi is hence the hub for Mughlai cuisine.

While the old city is a maze of small lanes and narrow streets with old construction and busy markets, the new city is a metropolitan with broad and organized roads with high rises and other modern amenities. New Delhi is the capital of India and a major political hub. Stay overnight in Delhi.

Have your breakfast in the hotel, spend the day at leisure. You may take a round nearby for collecting some mementos or to try some local delicacies. You would be then transferred to the airport to board flight to Kathmandu.

On arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to the hotel. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and is the largest metropolis in the country. Kathmandu is and has been for many years the centre of Nepal's history, art, culture and economy. It has a multiethnic population within a Hindu and Buddhist majority. It is also the home of the Newars. Religious and cultural festivities form a major part of the lives of people residing in Kathmandu.

Tourism is an important part of the country’s economy. The city ranks among the top ten upcoming travel destinations in the world.

You may spend the afternoon in shopping and at leisure. Overnight stay at Kathmandu.

You will be served American breakfast this morning. Once done, you would be taken for a morning visit to Patan, the ancient royal capital which contains ancient Royal residences which is also known as Lalitpur. It is the third largest city of Nepal after Kathmandu and Pokhara.

It is best known for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its tradition of arts and crafts. It is called city of festival and feast, fine ancient art, making of metallic and stone carving statue. The city was initially designed in the shape of the Buddhist Dharma-Chakra (Wheel of Righteousness). The four thurs or mounds on the perimeter of Patan are ascribed around, one at each corner of its cardinal points, which are popularly known as Asoka Stupas.

The most important monument of the city is Patan Durbar Square, which has been listed by UNESCO as one of seven Monument Zones that make up the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site.

Hanuman Dhoka is a complex of structures with the Royal Palace of the Malla kings and also of the Shah dynasty in the Durbar Square of central Kathmandu, Nepal. It is spread over five acres. The Hanuman Dhoka Palace gets its name from the stone image of Hanuman, the Hindu deity, that sits near the main entryway (dhoka means door or gate in Nepali). Temples of Mahadev and Parvati are among other attractions to visit. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Have your breakfast in the morning and get driven to Patan to visit a dozen of temples and pagodas of all styles. After that, you would be taken to Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most holy temples of Nepal. The sacred temple complex is located on the banks of the Bagmati River, approximately 5 kilometres north-east of Kathmandu in the eastern part of Kathmandu Valley.

The temple serves as the seat of Nepal’s national deity, Lord Pashupatinath. This temple complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites's list in 1979. This "extensive Hindu temple precinct" is a "sprawling collection of temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions raised over the centuries along the banks of the sacred Bagmati river" and is included as one of the seven monument groups in UNESCO's designation of Kathmandu Valley as a cultural heritage site. One of the major Festivals of the temple is Maha Shivaratri on which day over 1 million devotees visit here.

This afternoon is free for roaming nearby or for an optional excursion to Bhaaktapur or Bhadgaon and Boudhnath - the biggest stupa in the word.Stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Once done with your breakfast, you will be taken to Lumbini by road. Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered among the holiest places for the Buddhists. This is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Lumbini has two zones – the eastern zone with the Theravadin monasteries and the western zone with Mahayana and Vajrayana monasteries. The places to visit in Lumbini is the ruins of ancient monasteries, a sacred Bodhi Tree, an ancient bathing pond, the Ashoka pillar and the Mayadevi temple where Buddha was born. Since Buddha is also considered as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu by the Hindus, Mayadevi is also worshipped as Rupa devi, the mother goddess of Lumbini.

Dinner and overnight stay in Lumbini hotel.

You will be served an American breakfast, after that transferred to Varanasi via Sunauli. The town area of Sunauli is located on the Indo-Nepal Border and is the most famous transit point between India and Nepal.

While crossing Sunauli, the first stop is the Indian immigration office where you need to complete the custom and immigration facilities before heading towards Varanasi. You may also have a look of the place where it’s India at one side and Nepal few steps away! Once done with the formalities, move ahead to Varanasi. The next few hours are spent in drive. Reach Varanasi and spend overnight in hotel.

Much before breakfast is served, you will be taken for an early morning boat ride in the two holy banks of the River Ganges – Ghats Manikarnika and Harishchandra. Thousands of devotees come down to Varanas ghats for taking holy dips and for cremation purposes. Hindus believe that those who breathe their last in Varanasi and are cremated in these banks get released from the birth cycle.

Return to hotel and have your breakfast. The next few hours are free for leisure and shopping. In the evening, there would be a Yoga presentation that you are free to attend. The trip to Varanasi isn’t complete without watching the religious practices (evening aarti) at the Ghats. If you are lucky to be here on a Tuesday or on some religious festivals, you would be delighted to catch the special aarti near the Ghats.

Come back to hotel, have you dinner and retire for the night.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the railway station to board train to Satna at 1130 hours. Arrive Satna at 1815 hours. You will be driven to Khajuraho in the next few hours.

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a group of Hindu and Jain temples in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, India, about 175 kilometres (109 mi) southeast of Jhansi. They are one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India. The temples are famous for their nagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures. Most of the temples were built between 950 and 1050 by the Chandela dynasty.

Only about 20 temples remain; they fall into three distinct groups and belong to two different religions – Hinduism and Jainism. They strike a perfect balance between architecture and sculpture. The Temple of Kandariya is decorated with a profusion of sculptures that are among the greatest masterpieces of Indian art.

Dinner and overnight at Khajuraho.

Have your breakfast and head towards visiting the ancient temple complex of the Chandela dynasty, with mesmerizing relics and the famous erotic sculptures. Historical records note that the Khajuraho temple site had 85 temples by the 12th century, spread over 20 square kilometers Of these, only about 25 temples have survived, spread over 6 square kilometers. Of the various surviving temples, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is decorated with a profusion of sculptures with intricate details, symbolism and expressiveness of ancient Indian art.

The temples in Khajuraho are broadly divided into three parts : the Eastern group, the Southern Group and the Western group of temples of which the Western group alone has the facility of an Audio guided tour wherein the tourists are guided through the seven eight temples.

The Khajuraho temple complex offers a light and sound show every evening. The temples are believed to celebrate the marriage of Shiva and Parvathi.

In the afternoon, you will be taken to the Ayurvedic centre to see the natural and herbal medicines and their unique uses for health and body. An Ayurvedic massage by professionals will be offered to you, which is included in the package.

Dine at a local restaurant in Khajuraho.

Have breakfast, after which you will be taken to Orchha enroute Jhansi railway station to board the train to Agra. Ochhra is a town in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. Orchha was founded in 1531 (the 16th century AD) by the Bundela Rajput chief, Rudra Pratap Singh, who became the first King of Orchha, and also built the Fort of Orchha. On a seasonal island on the bank of the Betwa River, which has been surrounded by a battlement wall, stands a huge palace-fort. The fort consists of several connected buildings erected at different times, the most noteworthy of which is the Raja Mahal.

The Ram Raja Temple is built on a square base and has an almost entirely plain exterior, relieved by projecting windows and a line of delicate domes along the summit. The Jahangir Mahal is built on a rectangular base and is relieved by a circular tower at each corner surmounted by a dome, while two lines of graceful balconies supported on brackets mark the central storeys. The Chaturbhuj Temple was built during the reign of Emperor Akbar, by the Queen of Orchha Ganesh Kunwar, while Raj Mandir was built by 'Madhukar Shah' during his reign, 1554 to 1591.

Later that day, you will be transferred to the railway station to board your train (Shatabdi Express) to Agra at 1756 hours. Reach Agra at 2025 hours. Get transferred to the hotel, have dinner and stay overnight in Agra.

Right after having your breakfast, start the city sightseeing with the visit to the majestic Taj Mahal as the first rays of sun enhances its beauty further. Taj Mahal – one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is a magnificent construction that was built in white marble by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between the years 1631 to 1648 in the memory of his beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal. Standing majestically on banks of Yamuna River, this breathtaking, immensely beautiful monument is a synonymous to romance and love. Plan your trip in way that the 11th day doesn’t fall on a Friday, as Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

Up next is Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for its architectural structure, it was built in the 16th century during the Mughal Empire. There are several fairy-tale palaces like Khas Mahal and Jahangir Palace, and Diwan-e-Aam (public audience hall) and Diwan-e-Khas (private audience hall).

Agra is famous for inlaid marble work and handicrafts. In the afternoon, you will be taken to visit a marble factory to explore the work and effort behind the constructions and sculptures. You can also buy souvenirs, including one of Taj Mahal, to commemorate your trip.

Have dinner at a local restaurant and spend overnight in hotel.

After breakfast, drive to Fatehpur Sikri, 40 kms from Agra. The city was founded as the capital of Mughal Empire in 1571 by Emperor Akbar, serving this role from 1571 to 1585, when Akbar abandoned it due to a campaign in Punjab and was later completely abandoned in 1610.

The dynastic architecture of Fatehpur Sikri was modeled on Timurid forms and styles. The city was built massively and preferably with red sandstone. The city's architecture reflects both the Hindu and Muslim form of domestic architecture popular in India at the time.

It is accessed through gates along the 5 miles (8.0 km) long fort wall, namely, Delhi Gate, the Lal Gate, the Agra Gate and Birbal's Gate, Chandanpal Gate, the Gwalior Gate, the Tehra Gate, the Chor Gate and the Ajmeri Gate. Some of the important buildings of the city are Buland Darwaja, Jama Masjid, Tomb of Salim Chisti, Diwan-e- Aam, Diwan-e-Khas, Ibadat Khana, Panch Mahal and Birbal’s House to name a few.

Later, reach Jaipur, have dinner and spend overnight in hotel.

Buffet breakfast will be served this morning. After that, start your city tour with an excursion to Amber Fort situated high on a hill, and is the principal tourist attraction in Jaipur. The Fort is known for its artistic Hindu style elements. With its large ramparts and series of gates and cobbled paths, the fort overlooks Maota Lake, which is the main source of water for the Amer Palace.

The Fort is entirely constructed of red sandstone and marble and is laid out on four levels, each with a courtyard. There is a facility of elephant ride while ascending the hill, or one may choose Jeep ride too. Visit the royal halls, and then return to Jaipur.

In Jaipur, visit the Jantar Mantar (astronomic observatory of Jaisingh II) – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an equinoctial sundial, consisting of a gigantic triangular gnomon with the hypotenuse parallel to the Earth's axis. On either side of the gnomon is a quadrant of a circle, parallel to the plane of the equator. The instrument is intended to measure the time of day, correct to half a second and declination of the Sun and the other heavenly bodies.

Up next to visit is the City Palace, which includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces. The Chandra Mahal palace now houses a museum, but the greatest part of it is still a royal residence.

Hawa Mahal is the next spot which is a palace constructed of red and pink sandstone. The palace sits on the edge of the City Palace, Jaipur, and extends to the zenana, or women's chambers. The structure was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh being inspired by the unique structure of Khetri Mahal in Jhunjhunu.

Come back to hotel, have dinner and retire for the day.

Have breakfast in hotel. Drive to Delhi. Afternoon is free. You may take a rickshaw and visit the nearby places to pick some mementos or to try out some local delicacies to treat your taste buds. You may also explore the local malls and buildings which are in total contrast if compared between Old Delhi and New Delhi.

Spend overnight in Delhi.

The morning begins with a city tour of Old Delhi, built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1639 AD. Places like Raj Ghat – the cremation spot of Mahatma Gandhi, iconic Red Fort, Chandni Chowk – the busiest market, Jama Masjid – built by Shah Jahan and many more would be visited to. You may take a rickshaw ride in Chandni Chowk to feel the shopper’s paradise.

Take back to back trips to the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Qutub Minar – India’s largest minaret and the Humayun’s tomb. The next stop is the India Gate – which was built in the memory of “the Unknown Soldier”. You will be taken to Lakshminarayan Temple and driven past few more places like Parliament House, President’s House and other Government Secretarial Buildings.

Spend your night at Delhi hotel.

Breakfast will be served. You will be transferred to the airport on time to board return or outbound flight of your journey.

12 handpicked best india group tours, routes and itineraries .

group tours north india

My Favourite India Group Tours – Handpicked by an Expat.

There’s no doubt that India is one of the most fascinating, exotic and potentially life changing travel destinations in the world. However, traveling in India can be challenging, especially the first time  and especially for women alone. If you don’t want to  travel India alone or you want to leave the planning and organising to the experts and just enjoy your Indian adventure hassle free then taking one of the many India group tours or small group tours might be a good way to ensure your first trip to India is memorable for the right reasons!

There are so many India group tours it can be difficult to decide which company to go with, which places to see and which itinerary is best. After traveling in India for 5 years and living here for 3 I’m often asked to recommend the best India group tours so I thought it would be helpful to put together a list of my favourites from the companies I know, use and trust and also from friends and readers recommendations. I also wrote a post specifically on the best backpacker tours of India.

This isn’t a sponsored post, none of the companies I recommend have asked me to write this article, but I have included affiliate links where possible so that if you do find my recommendations useful and want to book then if you use my links I can earn a commission to keep the site going at no extra cost to you! 😉

Anna in Varanasi

Of course, it is possible, and enjoyable, to backpack India independently, even as a solo female traveller ( check out my tips for women here ) But if you are looking for travel buddies, not feeling too confident or just want to relax and enjoy the trip and let the experts do the planning and navigating, then taking a group tour is a good idea, especially if you have limited time as a tour will allow you to see the best of India without the hassle and time spent planning or figuring out how to get to the next destination.

If you’re on a longer trip it’s also a good idea to start off your Indian adventure with a group tour and then once you’re more acclimatized to the craziness you’ll feel more confident to move on and explore on your own, or maybe even with new friends that you met on the tour. Check out my recommended itinerary for 3 months backpacking in India.

best India group tours

Which company does the best India group tours?

There are hundreds of tour companies so its important to do your research not just on the tour itinerary and route but on the company as well and check things like the level of comfort and service and the age group and amount of other customers on the tour to make sure it’s the perfect one for you. You don’t want to end up on a bus with 50 other tourists so most of the companies I’ve recommend specialise in small group tours.

I’ve included a whole range of tours in this post so there should be something for everyone. If you are looking for fun, cheap tours for young travellers and backpackers check out this post specifically on the best backpacker tours of India.

Make sure you choose a reputable company, most of the India group tours I recommend are run by my favourite leading adventure tour companies; G Adventures and Intrepid . Both are award winning tour companies that run some awesome, adventurous, fun and socially responsible, small group tours of India. They have a huge selection with something for all budgets, ages and interests.

Both G Adventures and Intrepid offer last min or special deals so check out G Adventures last minute deals and Intrepid last minute deals before you book as you may be able to find a bargain and save money. Intrepid are also running an initiative to help empower local women by employing more women as tour guides on their India tours. Check out this article in The Guardian for more details.

With local women at the Gateway of India in Mumbai

Geckos Adventures and Contiki are also great for younger travelers as they have really fun and cheap India backpacking tours and trips that are perfect for 18 – 30 somethings. Exodus and Explore also offer good itineraries and small group tours of India aimed at more mature travelers who want more comfort. You can also compare itineraries, reviews and prices from loads of different tour companies and find great deals on Tour Radar  – check out this page where you can  get 60 % off Asia tours.

I wouldn’t really recommend just finding a cheap deal with an unknown Indian company online, while there are some great companies in India (I’ve recommended some at the bottom of the post) there are also alot of scams so it’s better to stick with a reputable global company that has been tried and tested by many travellers over the years, especially if its your first India trip.

The Best India Group Tours, Routes and Itineraries

To help you find the perfect trip here are my favourite India group tours. I’ve handpicked the best small group tour companies which visit my favourite places in India with the best itineraries and prices.

I’ve listed them in order for duration so you can see the most of India depending on how much time you have. If you’re short on time taking a tour will enable you to see more than if you traveled independently.

There’s something for everyone, if you’re into cycling, river cruises or culinary tours I’ve also included some suggestions at the end of the post. And why not visit neighbouring Sri Lanka or Nepal on the same trip! There are some tours that combine two of these amazing countries into one incredible trip!

The best India group tours – 2 weeks or less

If you have 2 weeks or less to explore India then it really does make sense to take a tour because India is such a diverse and huge country and traveling independently can be challenging and time consuming. So in order to see the most you can and have the best experience in 2 weeks or less then this are the best India group tours.

Intrepid – Golden Triangle Tour – 8 Days

The Golden Triangle tour is the quintessential introduction to India that includes some of the most famous sights in India in a short time. The Golden Triangle includes Delhi, Agra, home to the Taj Mahal and the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur in Rajasthan. This tour with Intrepid also takes you off the tourist trail to visit a village and get an insight into village life in India. Click here for more details and to book. G Adventures – Southern India and Karnataka by Rail– 10 Days

group tours north india

I often recommend starting your Indian adventure in South India as places like Kerala and Goa are much more chilled out and less chaotic than the cities in North India. This tour visits many of my favourite destinations in South India by rail. Traveling by train in India is the best way to travel and it’s an fascinating experience by itself.

Starting in Goa, you can choose to chill out on the beaches or explore the heritage site of Portuguese Old Goa. Next you’ll explore the magical ruins of Hampi, one of my favourite places in India, and then Mysore with it’s flamboyant palace.

Then visit the Tibetan monastery in Bylakuppe, enjoy the views and fabulous coffee in Madikeri and finish in Kochi in Kerala. This tour is packed with highlights and incredible sights but is far from the busy tourist trail of North India. This is one of my favourite India group tours Click here for prices and to book.

If you are visiting India in the hot months (especially April and May) then escape the heat and head to the Himalayas with this tour that takes in the sights of Delhi before heading to Amritsar where you’ll see the incredible Golden Temple and the bizarre India-Pakistan Wagah border ceremony.

Next head up the mountains to Dharamshala, the home of the Dalai Lama, and the hill station of Shimla. As it’s a tour by rail you’ll also get to travel up the mountains on the famous toy train and the tour even include a G Adventures-supported walking tour led by former Delhi streetkids. This tour is the best backpacker tour for North India. It’s a ‘yolo’ trip so it’s fun, adventurous  and affordable and it includes all of the highlights of North India. Some tours skip the less well known places but this one really has all the highlights of Rajasthan, the most colourful, captivating state in India.

This is the big one that I just couldn’t  leave out – the most epic of all the India group tours! There is just so much to see in India that it would take many, many trips to see it all. Want to try something different?

Visit india and nepal.

If you want to visit both India and Nepal on the same trip it’s easy by taking the G Adventures Delhi to Kathmandu Adventure – 15 Days. This is the best itinerary I’ve found as it visits not only India’s most famous sights; the Golden Triangle; Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and holy Varanasi but also some more off beat gems like Orchha along the way.

After crossing the border into Nepal you’ll visit Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, stay in a homestay in Chitwan National Park, marvel at the views of the lake and Himalayas in Pokhara before ending in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. See more details here.  Intrepid also offer a 19 day tour of the Highlights of India and Nepal.

Culinary tours of India

India is known for it’s spicy curries but real, authentic Indian food is totally different and has so much to offer than what you would find in an Indian takeaway back home. Eat your way to the heart of the nation and get a different insight into Indian culture and everyday life on a food or culinary tour of India.

Explore vibrant local markets, sample street food safely, enjoy home cooked meals and learn how to make delicious, authentic Indian food yourself. Intrepid offer some amazing food adventures in India, like this 15 day Real Food Adventure that takes you through the tastes and sights of Delhi, Rajasthan, Mumbai and Goa. You could also try a quick 3 day Bite Sized Food tours in Delhi.

Mumbai City and Slum Tours

Reality Tours and Travel are a responsible tour company who provide authentic, fun and off beat day tours that allow you to see the real Mumbai and give some of the profits back to the communities. I went on the tour of Dharavi slum on my first day in India and it was an eye opening and inspiring experience. Click to read more about how visiting Dharavi slum changed my perspectives on poverty.  They also offer bicycle tours, night tours, market and temple tours and village tours.

Cruise along the holy river Ganges

Escape the chaos of the cities and witness a more authentic and laid back way of life cruising along the holy river Ganges on a 12 day trip from Kolkata to Varanasi with G Adventures Cruise the Ganges, you’ll experience off beat villages untouched by tourism, historic and cultural sights and also visit Bodhgaya where the Buddha gained enlightenment.

Cycling tours of India

Slow down, get off the tourist trail and really experience a whole new side to India on a cycling tour. I would only recommend doing a cycling tour in Winter (Dec – Feb) as the heat might be too much otherwise. Exodus Travels offer great cycling tours in India including Kerala, Rajasthan and the epic Manali to Leh trip. See here for more details.   Intrepid also do a cycling tour of Rajasthan.

Get off the beaten track in unexplored North East India

Not many travellers make it to the stunning, tribal areas of North East India but I’ve been twice now and really love this very authentic, very different and really unexplored region. Traveling in North East India can be difficult to do independently because of permit requirements and a lack of public transport and hotels so it’s really best to take a tour of North East India.

I’ve travelled twice with Sange from Holiday Scout – an awesome local tour operator that knows this fascinating region in depth. See my review of traveling with Holiday Scout and more on my adventures in North East India here.
