FC Richmond Youth Soccer Programs

FC Richmond’s Travel Soccer Programs, Futures Program and Recreational Soccer Programs are under the direction of Trip Ellis, Technical/Executive Director, and Trip Dunville, Director of Coaching.  Trip Ellis holds both a USSF A and National Youth coaching license, played professional soccer with the Richmond Kickers, Philadelphia Kixx, and the Raleigh Capital Express.  Trip has more than 20 years of coaching experience to his credit.

Trip Dunville holds both a USSF National A and National Youth license. Trip was one of the original members of the FC Richmond Magic program.  During his time as a player, Trip was a member of ODP State and Regional teams and a member of the NSCAA All-Area team in 1985 and 1986. After high school Trip headed Davis and Elkins College to play for the nationally ranked Senators soccer program. After college, Dunville became a member of the US Virgin Islands National Team and competed with the national team in their 2006 World Cup Qualifying campaign.

FC Richmond Founder, Dave Amsler, March 22, 1948 - June 4, 2021

Dave was a professional soccer teacher for 50 years. In 1975 he was one of the first 50 coaches to earn the USSF "A" coaching license -- American soccer’s highest license.

Dave was the Director of Coaching for FC Richmond from 1985 until he transitioned to Technical Director in 2017.

In 1976 Dave founded the Richmond Strikers Soccer Club and continued as its director until 1985 when he founded FC Richmond Magic. He was active in both the boys and girls Olympic Development Programs for 20 years as a Region I staff coach and a Virginia State team coach. Dave served as Director of the JCP State Coaching School for 10 years and has been a frequent lecturer for youth soccer coaches in the South. Dave was also Co-Director of the Randolph Macon Soccer Camp for eight years and was a high school soccer coach for three years.

In 1997, Dave founded and was President of the Virginia Club Champions League (VCCL) for 18 years and now exists as the Club Champions League (CCL). The Club Champions League (CCL) is the first, and largest, club-based youth soccer league in the United States.  With four distinct competitive divisions, the league has over 13,000 participants, and over 72,000 registered youth soccer players within CCL member clubs.  The CCL is larger than many state associations. The league is one of, if not, the most competitive league in the region and/or country.

As a soccer player and coach, Dave has traveled to thirty (30) different countries. Over eight hundred (800+) former players in his programs have played in 100+ different US colleges and universities. Over the years, Dave and his staff has coached and participated in the development of twenty (20) National Team players; several college (6) and high school (15) All-Americans; twenty four (24) professional players; three (3) professional-level coaches; and the only current FIFA-licensed referee in the State of Virginia.

While attending Campbell College in North Carolina, Dave was voted team MVP all four years, was a 3-time All-South All-American, and captained Campbell College for two years. In 1969 he captained the team to a 5th place finish in the nation in the NAIA National Championship and was inducted into the Campbell University College Hall of Fame in October 2000. Dave earned his B.S. in Health and Physical Education while attending Campbell College.

Dave was married and had three children, four stepchildren and three grandchildren. Dave passed away on June 4, 2021.

History of FC Richmond

In 1971 Dave started the first Summer Soccer League in Richmond, Virginia. The league quickly grew to more than 1100 youth players. Dave founded the Richmond Strikers in 1976, the first Travel Soccer Team in Richmond.  The team traveled each week to play in a Northern Virginia league. They won the league in their first year of competition. FC Richmond's Jeff Rogers, was on that team. In 1980, the Richmond Strikers merged with the Three Chopt Recreation Association, retaining the Richmond Strikers name. In 1985, Dave founded the FC Richmond Magic Soccer Club. Three years later FC Richmond merged with the Greenfield Dragons Athletic Association. The FC Richmond name was retained and three travel soccer divisions were formed: Magic, Mystx, and Metro. Today FC Richmond serves and develops 2,500 young athletes in Recreation, Futures, and Travel soccer programs. FC Richmond’s high standards of excellence have helped countless players develop skill and character through commitment to the game.

SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDELINES

All Richmond Kickers players and parents are expected to understand what is considered acceptable and what is not when engaging in social media activities. Your association with Richmond Kickers opens you up to an increased level of scrutiny and exposes Richmond Kickers in the same way. It is your responsibility to ensure that anything that you say or post on social media is not inappropriate in any way towards Richmond Kickers, Richmond Kickers membership, Richmond Kickers affiliates or the overall soccer community. When in doubt please contact Richmond Kickers for clarification.

4. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Long-term player development is the number one goal of the Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club. All Richmond Kickers teams follow the club wide Richmond Kickers Player Development Philosophy, Style and Principles of play. RKYSC player development program is divided into three stages:

  • ZONE 1 – U9-U12 age groups
  • ZONE 2 – U13-U15 age groups
  • ZONE 3 – U16-U19 age groups

Furthermore, the RKYSC player development program encompasses Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological aspects of the game that are specific to each stage and age group. These aspects ensure appropriate player development and progress over the entire course of the program.

DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE (U9-U12): ZONE 1

The goal of this stage is to provide ample opportunities for players to build a solid foundation that will ensure their future success. While teams always compete to win games, results are not the focus. During training sessions players work on learning soccer fundamentals and are then encouraged to try them in league and tournament play. During games, players are encouraged to take risks, to try out different things and to play with emotional freedom without undue pressure of winning games from coaches and parents.

TRANSITIONAL STAGE (U13-U15): ZONE 2

During this stage, the pace of player development quickens due to the acceleration of physical and mental maturation. Main emphases are on the development of individual skills under pressure of time, space and an opponent. During training sessions and games, players are encouraged to solve problems (decision making) within the context of the game or a particular situation on the field. Team tactics and various systems of play are introduced through the training program. The game should remain fun and enjoyable and players should have a passion for the game.

COMPETITIVE STAGE (U16-U19): ZONE 3

This stage of player development is characterized by demanding and challenging training sessions and competitive matches. All individual skills are practiced, for the most part, at match speed and under match conditions. Coaches demand excellence from players in all aspects of individual skills while understanding that mistakes will happen. Training sessions involve technical functional and tactical functional training and a great deal of coaching is within 9 v 9 or 11 v 11 situations.

Learning -  Level Up will improve players and coaches learning by providing opportunities for them to adapt to varying practice situations.  Skill development in soccer is directly associated with a player’s ability to adapt to, and manage themselves in environments that challenge them socially, emotionally, and psychologically.

Connections - Level Up will allow all players/coaches more visibility to our full-time staff throughout the course of the year.  Level up provides an increased visibility and understanding of our players/coaches which can lead to recognition, and identification for new opportunities.

The program is tryout based.  Boys and girls teams are formed from U7 all the way through U19.  PPO looks to develop players.  We are interested in both experienced soccer players, as well as those with a burning passion to learn and improve at the game.  Our initial fees are among the lowest of all travel programs in South Florida, as one of our goals as an Optimist Club is to make the highest levels of this youth sport within reach to all in our community.  To view our competitive staff directory click HERE (partial list, will be updated soon).

Financial Obligations

The registration fee (paid once per season/year) to join a  Heat Strikers team is: Base registration fee:

Uniforms must be in good condition, as determined by PPO. If you are a returning player and wish to re-use your uniforms and practice shirts, a credit will be given.  For details please reach out to your coach who can provide more details as well as a discount code to use if you are going to re-use your old uniforms. The registration fee includes all basic costs associated with participation in one regular season of league participation,  a uniform kit, and FYSA carding and insurance.

The fee does not include tournaments, travel expenses, specialized equipment, or outside training.   The Heat Strikers uniforms are custom printed (sublimated), and really stand out compared to other local teams.   Each kit contains a home and away jersey, shorts, socks, and 2 practice shirts. *Non Pembroke Pines Residents will be charged an out of city fee of $95, which is imposed by the City.    Proof of residency (uploaded at time of registration) must be an electric bill, water bill, mortgage statement, or lease agreement. Additonal Training/ Tournaments

Our coaches have volunteered to practice with your team at least 2x per week, as well as be at the fall or spring league games as required (each team will select one FYSA sanctioned league season, which is included in the registration fee).   You are not required to pay any training fees to be on a PPO team.

Many PPO coaches do offer PPO soccer teams and players additional FYSA sanctioned competition and training opportunities most often held outside of our park.    Understand these activities are fully OPTIONAL, and you need not attend them.   Any fees (or expense reimbursements) coaches charge you for is not a charge from PPO.  If you choose to not participate in these activities you are not required to pay for them, and your child’s participation in twice weekly practice and soccer league play will not be effected in any way. Most teams will attend off site tournaments through the coming year.  The team's costs for tournaments vary by age group, and some teams will chose to do more or less than others.  The cost of tournaments is not included in the registration fee paid to PPO.  More information on approximate tournament costs will be provided during the tryout / selection process.  Teams will also coordinate fund raising activities to help offset some of these expenses.

Hansi Flick faces dilemma over two young strikers amidst Chelsea, Bayern interest

Barcelona will have a few important decisions to make as we near the start of the summer transfer window.

Given the way Barça have put trust in young players, it indicates that Hansi Flick is ready to bet on several youth players, as part of his plan to rejig the squad.

To that end, Hansi Flick is facing a major dilemma over the future of two young forwards in the form of Vitor Roque and Marc Guiu .

No shortage of suitors

Both players are facing uncertain prospects in the first-team, with Roque, in particular, in contention to leave the club this summer.

The Brazilian appears to have no shortage of suitors either. A recent report from Gianluca Di Marzio suggests Fiorentina are in contact with the Barcelona forward over a potential move to Serie A in the coming summer.

Roque has also been linked with a move to several Spanish clubs. Barcelona, in fact, are reportedly favouring Roque to join a fellow Spanish club on a loan deal.

Marc Guiu, on the other hand, was recently courted by Sevilla , with the club’s sporting director reportedly keen on signing him on a loan deal.

Fabrizio Romano now suggests that Bayern Munich and Chelsea, too, have joined the race to sign Marc Guiu in the coming summer.

Flick has a decision to make

Keeping that in mind, Hansi Flick will have a decision to make, whether or not to get rid of both these young forwards and bring in fresh revenue or retain their services.

Although Flick has the utmost faith in Robert Lewandowski , he must be mindful of the Pole’s age, coupled with Barcelona’s lack of alternatives.

That is where the likes of Guiu and Vitor Roque could come into the fray, with both capable of operating as a number nine.

While Roque’s performances at Barça have been quite unconvincing, he might just flourish under Flick’s tactical setup.

Guiu, meanwhile, is considered a rare talent by many as La Masia does not usually produce top-level strikers. A crucial awaits these two individuals.

Wout Weghorst goal shines light on Dutch football’s complicated relationship with big strikers

HAMBURG, GERMANY - JUNE 16: Wout Weghorst of Holland celebrates 1-2 during the EURO match between Poland v Holland at the Volksparkstadium on June 16, 2024 in Hamburg Germany (Photo by Roy Lazet/Soccrates/Getty Images)

After Euro 2020, when fans could not travel abroad to most matches, and the 2022 World Cup, when fans of many European nations weren’t keen on a trip to Qatar, Euro 2024 has been notable for the sheer number of fans in Germany.

And Sunday’s early kick-off, geographically, was the perfect game for fandom. Germany is straddled to the east and west by Poland and the Netherlands, with the borders about 300km and 200km away from Hamburg.

And as the Dutch national anthem Wilhelmus played before the Netherlands’ 2-1 win, their supporters behind the goal held up banners depicting various stages of Marco van Basten’s famous winning goal at Euro ’88, perhaps the most celebrated single hit of a football in the history of the game.

go-deeper

Ranking the greatest Euros goals of all time

That is the only time the Netherlands have won a tournament — and that tournament was hosted in Germany. The Dutch are hoping this proves a lucky omen.

But even the most optimistic Dutch fan isn’t pretending there’s anything like Van Basten in the current side. This is a peculiarly unbalanced Dutch squad overloaded on defensive talent — Micky van de Ven , Daley Blind and Matthijs de Ligt were on the bench here — but rather lacking in central midfield and up front.

strikers travel soccer tryouts

On 45 goals, Memphis Depay is only five away from drawing level with Robin van Persie as the Netherlands’ record goalscorer, but few consider him a genuinely top-class centre-forward. For much of this game, Depay showed why he is so frustrating — attempting somewhat ambitious shots from range, and snatching at close-range opportunities. Now 30 and a free agent, it’s difficult to make a case for him being a significantly better player than he was a decade ago, when he scored twice in the group stage at World Cup 2014. None of the four shots he took in his 81 minutes on the pitch were on target.

And so, with nine minutes remaining, on came big Wout Weghorst. The Dutch have a habit of producing strikers like this, and the enjoyable thing is that they always seem a little embarrassed by them. The nation of Total Football , about interpretation of space, cohesion between players and developing good all-round footballers is also the nation with the tallest people, on average, in the world. So they end up producing big No 9s, whether they like it or not. Weghorst, with his first touch of the game, scored the winner.

For all the justifiable celebration of that Van Basten goal, it’s worth remembering that the Netherlands briefly seemed to be heading out of the Euro ’88 group stage with a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland. But then they threw on big Wim Kieft and John Bosman, two proper strikers. Kieft, an awkward-looking but effective 6ft 3in (190cm) striker, scored a famously scruffy goal by getting his head to a wayward shot, sending the ball spinning home into the far corner. The man who attempted the shot, incidentally, was Ronald Koeman, the side’s current manager.

Even before the advent of false nines , the Dutch have always prided themselves on their centre-forwards being all-rounders. Johan Cruyff was essentially a centre-forward, but obviously so much more. The all-time Eredivisie top goalscorer, Willy van der Kuijlen, was really an attacking midfielder. And while Dennis Bergkamp was considered a second striker by the time he played in the Premier League for Arsenal , in his Eredivisie days, he was considered a No 9 who finished top goalscorer three times. Ruud van Nistelrooy, a proper No 9 who specialised in putting the ball in the net, was somewhat unloved in his homeland.

strikers travel soccer tryouts

The 6ft 6in Weghorst is even more extreme. Signed by Sean Dyche to lead the line for Burnley , then the Premier League’s most old-school side, he was then surprisingly loaned to Manchester United where he failed to score in 17 league appearances, 10 of them starts. Nevertheless, he was admired for his work rate and had the makings of a cult hero. Since loaned to both Besiktas and Hoffenheim, he is still owned by Burnley, now a second-tier side.

Somehow, players like that seem more effective in international football, where the style of play is a little more basic — Niclas Fullkrug , Germany ’s equivalent, came off the bench to smash in a goal in the 5-1 win over Scotland . Weghorst scored two crucial goals against Argentina at the World Cup 18 months ago.

“Wout found the net at the decisive time,” said Koeman on Sunday. “He adds value to the team because he has a different way of playing. That’s great, and what we needed in the final stages of the game. Memphis is a forward but he plays more ‘open’, has more ball possession and also wants players to run (off him), and we couldn’t do that in the first half. Wout is aggressive, he always takes the initiative, he’s a good header of the ball too. He gets one opportunity, he finds the net, and that’s great. We have different ways of playing with different players.”

“When I spoke to Wout (about coming) with the national team, I tried to explain the possibilities of starting or coming on the pitch in the second half when we need a different option. He was a bit upset — but that’s a good reaction. He’s doing a lot to get an opportunity to start.”

And before the press conference ended, there was, inevitably, a question about whether a striker like Weghorst can really fit with a Dutch football side. “Every team needs Dutch qualities, but also qualities that make the team better,” smiled Koeman.

A couple more goals like this in another Dutch triumph in Germany, and Weghorst will earn a banner to go along with Van Basten’s.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

strikers travel soccer tryouts

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

strikers travel soccer tryouts

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

strikers travel soccer tryouts

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

strikers travel soccer tryouts

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

strikers travel soccer tryouts

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

strikers travel soccer tryouts

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
