Russia Tour Packages FAQs

Q. How long does it take to get a tourist visa for Russia, and what is its validity? A. Typically, the processing time for a Russian visa in the general category is between 4-5 working days. For an urgent visa, you need to wait for 2-3 working days. The processing time is the same regardless of the fact that you are applying for a single, double or multiple entry visa. You visa validity will depend on your date of travel, with validity getting stretched to the date of final exit from Russia. All tourist applications are processed through the embassy in New Delhi. Your application submission takes place on an appointment basis. Only for group applications, the appointment is taken as a group. Usually depending on your date of travel, it is scheduled 15 days ahead of your date of departure. Q. Is Russia safe for tourists? A. Contrary to popular notion, Russia, especially large cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, is perfectly safe for tourists. However, it is advisable to be cautious of the surroundings and avoid shady or restricted areas. Q. Which airports has a flight to Russia from India? A. All flights to Russia are operated from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Delhi serves direct flight connectivity to Russia’s capital city Moscow via Russian carrier Aeroflot. There are no flights to Russia from other airports in India. Q. How long should my Russian vacation be? A. Russia is a tremendously vast nation with massive geographical extension that spans from Europe in the west to the far reaches of the east till Asia, and Arctic poles on the north. Firstly, you need to decide what places you want to cover, which any reputable travel agent like Yatra can guide you on that. That said, for most tourists, Moscow and St. Petersburg are the main attractions, and you need a week or so to see both cities. Q. What are the packing tips for Russia? A. For summer, bring comfortable clothes, plus a warm sweater or a light jacket for early mornings and evenings. Do carry comfortable walking shoes like sneakers. Don’t forget to bring an umbrella and a raincoat as summer often receives rainfalls. Pack heavy woollen clothes if arriving in winter as temperatures in winter plummet to below zero degrees. You will need a good fur cap, a warm coat, a scarf, gloves, thermal pants and boots for the snow. Women should bring a scarf or shawl in the bag since they might need to cover their head or shoulders to enter some Orthodox churches. And of course, always look for the weather forecast before your Russia trip to be able to wear the most appropriate clothes. Q. Will I be able to communicate in English when travelling in Russia? A. English is one of the most popular foreign languages in Russia. And, as a tourist, you can easily get around in English in large cities, plush hotels, good restaurants and the busier tourist areas of Russia. But, this is not always the case in regular shops, among public transport staff where Russian is primarily spoken and understood. A local English-speaking tour guide can be helpful in such an event. However, learning a few common phrases such as Hi, Thank You, Please, etc. can make your Russia tour much better. Q. What is the currency of Russia? A. The currency used in Russia is Ruble or Rouble. 1 Indian rupee is equal to 0.93 Ruble. Q. Are vegetarian dishes readily available in Russia? A. Traditional Russian diet is mostly based on meat along with root vegetables, potatoes and flour. However, today, many establishments are catering to vegetarian needs. Cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg have several eateries that serve a variety of salads and vegetable-based dishes, and grocery stores where you will find many meat-free options. Q. How expensive are Russia tour packages from India? A. If you compare with other European nations, Russia is cheaper for Indian travellers. As ruble is almost equal to rupee, that means going to Russia can be easily done within budget. Q. Can Russia be visited in winter? A. Russia is cold and covered in snow for most of the year. It is a good time to visit the country, as many activities are only possible during this season, such as ice trekking, dog sledging, skiing, etc. For instance, you can visit the frozen Lake Baikal over where you can walk, ride a dog sleigh, cross the lake by car, or do a marathon. To the northwest in Karelia, you can do snowmobiles, skiing, or watch the northern lights. You can visit ancient sites and Russian provinces, take a walk in the forest, do horse riding, indulge in a Russian Banya (steam bath) or embark on a scenic Trans-Siberian train ride. These are but only a handful of things you can enjoy in the Russian winter. Moreover, you will get the lowest prices possible on accommodation, entertainment and activities. That said, the warmer months May to August is the best choice to travel to Russia when the weather is beautiful and comfortable to be outdoors and enjoy the attractions. The summer months have longer days, which means attractions in major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg have broader schedules. It is also the peak tourist season in the country.

Everything you need to know if you’re planning a trip to Russia right now

By Arundhati Ail

If you’ve been scrambling to figure out how to get to Russia after seeing celebrities vacation in the picturesque St. Petersburg on Instagram, it might help to cover all your bases before booking your flights. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning on travelling to Russia right now:

What are the visa requirements for Indians in Russia?

Travel to Russia is open to Indian nationals with valid visas, including tourist visas, as well as non-Indian citizens with a residence permit or any other document that proves their right to permanently reside in India.

What are the entry requirements for Russia?

If you plan to fly into any airport in Russia, you will need a medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result, taken not more than three days before your arrival in the Russian Federation. The certificate should ideally be in English or Russian. If not, you can submit a certificate in Hindi, along with a Russian translation certified by a consular official of the Russian Federation.

You will also need to fill out a form provided by your flight attendants and undergo another COVID-19 test on arrival, after passing passport control. You don’t need to wait at the airport to get your results. Some regions may have self-isolation requirements for arriving passengers, so make sure to check with the regional office before your departure.

Which flights are flying to Russia from India right now?

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates and Etihad Airways are running flights from Mumbai and Delhi to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

What is the COVID-19 situation like in Russia?

On 24 June, 20,182 new cases of coronavirus were detected in Russia, bringing the total tally since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,388,695 cases. Moscow and St. Petersburg currently have the highest number of positive cases in the country.

What can you do in Russia?

In Moscow, entertainment and sport venues cannot have more than 500 people at a time. Game rooms and food courts are closed until 29 June, while amusement parks, playgrounds, gazebos and dance floors are closed until further notice. Restaurants, bars, nightclubs, cafes, discos and other entertainment establishments cannot serve visitors between 11pm and 6am. From 28 June, you can visit eateries only if you show a QR code that shows you have a negative PCR result. You can get the QR code with the help of the Immune Moscow service here . Summer cafes and verandahs will remain open to non-QR code holders until 11 July. Find more information about Moscow’s QR code system here .

St. Petersburg:

COVID-19 restrictions are being tightened in St. Petersburg, due to the current Euro 2020 matches that are being held there. Food courts and children’s play areas will remain closed and no food will be served at the Euro 2020 fan zones. Cinemas will operate at 50% capacity and restaurants will be closed for dine-in between 2am and 6am.

Krasnodar region:

In Russia’s beach holiday region on the coast of the Black sea, starting 1 July, hotels and resorts will only accept guests if they are vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a negative PCR report. From August, only vaccinated guests will be allowed into resorts.

Can you travel to England after a layover in Russia?

Russia is on the UK’s amber list of countries. You can travel from Russia to England, as long as you meet all the testing and quarantine requirements. You will need to fill out a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) within 48 hours before your departure. Following this, you will receive a QR code on your email that you will need to present during check-in. You will need to present a negative RT-PCR, RT-LAMP or antigen result taken no more than three days before departure. You will need to quarantine on arrival in your home or at the place you are staying for 10 days and undergo a COVID-19 test on Day 2 and Day 8 after your arrival. Find more information here .

  • For many international travelers, obtaining a visa for Russia can be tricky. It often requires an invitation for travel. These invitations can be bought from travel shops within the country. Make sure you research your options well in advance as acquiring the visa can take time. If you're requesting the visa from a country other than your own the situation can become trickier. It's best to work out the details before you leave home.
  • Train travel is almost always your best option. The roads are often in poor condition, particularly in the more remote areas, and the driving safety record is quite poor. Trains are generally more comfortable, reliable, and safer.
  • Russia has a long standing tradition in music. If you're visiting a city for a few days, try and get tickets to a classical music concert. The orchestras are quite impressive and the theaters are a fun place to experience the local culture.
  • It's important to keep your currency very clean and crisp. It's easier to exchange bills that are not worn or torn. When you're given cash in change, flip through it and make sure the bills are in good condition as well.
  • ATMs are available all cities and most small towns. Some ATMs do not accept foreign cards, so if you're having trouble finding one that does, go into an upscale hotel where you will likely have better luck. Most ATMs also have an English interface as well.

If your trip is during the summer season, then you can carry lightweight loose summer fabric clothes which will be both comfortable and soothing. If you are traveling to Russia in the winter, then you must carry warm clothes. Do not forget to carry ample sneakers, shoes, jackets, and sweatshirts.

Note: If you do not want to stress for the laundry services, then you can carry more clothes, though laundry services will be provided in the hotel where you will be staying.

Mandatory Documents: If you are traveling to Russia, then make sure that you cannot enter Russia for a number of times on a single entry visa. For this, you will be requiring a multi-entry visa. As the visas have validation of 30 days, ensure that your visa is valid according to your departure date and far from the expiration date as well. Always carry two copies of the documents (passport and visa) before leaving, in case needed at any point of time.

Electric Plugs : Russia mainly uses 2 round European outlets. You can easily find an adapter at an electronics shop or pharmacy offline or online. Russia utilizes 220-volt electrical energy (America uses 110 volts) and most electrical gadgets support both. Look on the back of your power adapter to discover its supported voltage. There, if you see the variety between "110-240 volts", then it means that your gadgets work and gives you a green signal. If it says "110 volts", then it will not work.

Phones and sim cards: To utilize your phone during your travel to Russia, either trigger worldwide roaming or check your phone with the concerned specialist. The first is simpler yet progressively expensive. Opening your phone empowers you to utilize local Russian calling services and methodologies. A phone call made thusly from Russia to India will cost about Rs 60 - Rs. 80/Minute, while Indian cell phone organizations can charge up to Rs.200/minute for overall roaming in Russia.

If you want to purchase a sim card right there in Russia, on the occasion of your visit, then you can easily do it, with your passport acting as proof.

Medication is Mandatory: You can never avoid your health while traveling to a completely new place. Health turning bad is inevitable, so it is up to you to keep your medications inside your bag so that you need not deal with the loss of good health during a stunning trip. If you do not deal with any major disease or health issue, then you can carry the basic medicines that are needed, but if you are on prescription medicines, then ascertain that you have carried them all in larger quantities, to avoid risks.

Tip Offering Regulations in Russia

  • Though offering tips in Russia is a trend in Russia, but the amounts are smaller rather than in other parts of Europe.
  • You can offer some gratuity to your guide who accompanies you throughout the trip or travel to Russia (let’s say, $25 for every 8 hours of work and $15 for 4 hours of work).
  • You can give a tip to the chauffeur or driver who transfers you from one place to another throughout your sightseeing ventures (let’s say, $8-12 for 8 hours of work).
  • Decide your tip to be given to the guide and drivers throughout your trips according to the categorization of a group tour or an individual tour.
  • When you are out for a river cruise, then you will find out a special box at the reception desk indicating you to drop a tip for the crew (drop from $10-15 daily depending on how much you enjoyed your cruise).

Is Travel to Russia Safe?

This is a run of the mill concern, whether Russia is protected and a safe place to visit for a vacation. It's not an underdeveloped nation and the 90s do not exist anymore. Russia has a working power and a civilized, and amicable populace.

Russia is completely safe for you to travel, anyway there are fundamental precaution estimates that you have to take when visiting any nation. To begin with, don't carry your passport with you- either leave it at the hotel or on the ship. Always carry a duplicate of your passport and visa with you. On the off chance that you are stood up to by a Russian police officer (which is somewhat impossible), then show the duplicate of your identification will be adequate.

You can never predict the pick-pocketing activities for which you should always keep an eye on safety measures where you take advice from the guide or representative through the Russia Tour Package or the hotel owner. It is better on your part to not talk to strangers so that you do not involve unnecessary obstacles even by mistake.

Avoid carrying more than $100 with you while you are out for any sightseeing ventures in and around Russia. Keep your cash and card in different pockets, and if possible divide the money with your companion throughout the travel. It is better if you carry all your belongings in zipped pockets or buttoned pockets which keep them safe and make it hard for the pick-pockets to reach out.

Even after so many efforts, you fail to keep your money or any other belongings safe, then do the needful mentioned below:

  • Alert your guide as soon as possible, for he or she will take the necessary action
  • Make a call on the emergency number and then your bank to obstruct the cards that have been stolen.

The dos and don'ts of visiting Russia for the first time

Sep 24, 2021 • 6 min read

These top tips can help you make the most of your visit to Russia © MarinaDa / Shutterstock

The world’s largest country beguiles and fascinates with its world-class art, epic landscapes and multifaceted society. You may also find that perseverance  and a sense of humour will go a long way in enriching your first-time Russian travel experience. From the things you absolutely must do before you travel to the things we recommend that you steer clear of once you're there, here are some top tips for avoiding common pitfalls when visiting  Russia .

People stand at a viewpoint looking out at a huge road bridge over a body of water

DO apply for a visa early and register on arrival

Visas must be applied for in advance by all visitors. How you do that varies depending on your nationality and where in Russia you are traveling to. Travelers from many countries, including the UK and US, need to apply in-person at an embassy or consulate and provide biometric data. An e-visa may be an option for passport-holders from 52 countries, which include many EU travelers, as well as those from China, India, Japan, Singapore, and some Middle Eastern countries. However these are temporarily suspended due to COVID-19.  Check with your local Russian embassy or consulate for confirmation, or get up-to-date information here .

You can apply at the last moment, but it may cost you a fortune. Start the application process at least a month before your trip and consider using a specialist travel agency to arrange visas and make key transport bookings. Every visitor to Russia should have their visa registered within seven days of arrival, excluding weekends and public holidays. The obligation to register is with your hotel or hostel, or landlord, friend or family if you’re staying in a private residence. Also keep in mind that your visa entry and exit dates will be written according to European calendar convention (day/month/year) as opposed to the American style, so don't get mixed up or over-stay your visa.

DO check the events calendar

During major holidays – the first week in January (between New Year’s Day and Orthodox Christmas) and the first week or two of May (around Labour Day, or May Day, and Victory Day) – Moscow and St Petersburg empty out. Despite this, both cities are festive during these times, with parades, concerts and other events, but museums and other institutions may have shortened hours or be shut altogether. May to September is the best time to visit St Petersburg but mid-June is when the city is irresistible, with the White Nights revelry at its peak.

The exterior of a large white building with columns in the evening

DO dress up for a night out

We can’t guarantee you’ll make it past Moscow’s "face control" (the term comes from clubs trying to "save face" by only letting in patrons who meet their image standards) but you can better your chances of getting in to the top clubs by making a sartorial effort – high heels and skirts for women, all black for men. Russians also make an effort when they go to the theater or a posh restaurant – you should do likewise to fit in.

A street sign with Cyrillic writing on the side of a building

DO learn the Cyrillic alphabet

Making an effort to familiarize yourself with the Cyrillic alphabet repays tenfold. It will help you decode street and metro signs, maps, timetables and menus, even if you don't know many Russian phrases. While digital tools like the Russian Metro app  and Google Translate make it easier than ever to visit countries where you don't speak or read the language, brushing up beforehand can reduce frustration and endear you to the locals.

Rideshare options such as Taxovichkoff and Yandex Taxi upended the taxi industry in Russia as much as anywhere else. That means less pressure to know the Russian phrases you'd need to hails cabs in the streets, but it still is wise to learn key phrases in case there's a navigation mixup, like the address of your hotel or intersection of your short-term apartment rental.

A series of large buildings, the outer one with dark red walls, line a riverside in a city

DO expect to spend your money

Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world and St Petersburg is not a cheap destination either; wallet-thinning shock is common at many restaurants and hotels. As a foreigner you’ll also find yourself paying more than a Russian for some museums – often as much as 10 times the price Russians pay. If you’re a student, flashing your ID can save you money at museums and other institutions.

You can save on dining out a few different ways. Many restaurants offer "business lunches" that are great value and very filling. Several years ago the trend for " anti-cafes " cropped up in larger Russian cities, and there are still a few where you pay by the minute for coffee, biscuits, and a little wi-fi time.

Food markets  that blend farmers markets and food halls are popular, and are often found in architecturally significant vintage buildings. You can shop for ingredients to cook yourself or sample cuisines from around the world from dozens of  vendor stalls. Many food markets are less expensive than sit-down restaurants and let you try a wider variety of local and international dishes.

A small glass of a clear liquid with a chess board in the background

DON’T ask for a mixer with your vodka

Few traditions in Russia are as sacrosanct as the drinking of vodka , and any foreign notions of drinking it with orange juice or tonic are anathema to your average Russian. If you need something to wash it down, you can chase it with a lemon, a pickle or, perhaps, a separate glass of water. Vodka is drunk in swift shots, not sipped. It’s traditional (and good sense) to eat a little something after each shot, so order some vodka snacks too.

A huge white church with three golden domes on the roof

DON’T be disrespectful in a church

Working churches are open to everyone, but as a visitor you should take care not to disturb any devotions or offend sensibilities. There's no face control, but women should cover their heads and bare shoulders when entering a church. In some monasteries and churches it’s also required for a woman to wear a skirt – wraps are usually available at the door. Men should remove their hats in church and not wear shorts.

DON’T take photos of government buildings

Be very careful about photographing stations, official-looking buildings and any type of military-security structure – if in doubt, don’t snap! Travelers have been arrested and fined for such innocent behaviour.

Two police officers dressed in black walk through a heavily touristed area

DON’T be surprised if you’re stopped by the police

Although new laws were passed in 2011 that ostensibly reconfigured Russia's police and their interactions with the public, it's still wise to carry a photocopy of your passport, visa and registration – not to mention travel documents that indicate how and when you'll return home – and present them when an officer demands to see your documents. You may also see special tourist police near major attractions like the Red Square , who have special training and language skills to assist travelers.

If you're issued a fine, Russian authorities might expect an "unofficial payment" to expedite their service on the spot, as opposed to handling the matter later at the station. Either way, always ask for an official receipt, and consider carrying the phone number for your country's embassy in case matters get more complicated.

Recent Phenomenon Of Solar Storms In 2024

Northern Lights In Ladakh = northern lights tour from india

In May 2024, there were a series of intense solar storms. This phenomenon was witnessed on Earth by a significant increase in the intensity and visibility of both the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis.

As a result of these intense solar storms, the northern lights were visible from locations far away from the North and South Poles. In the northern hemisphere, the aurora was visible around Europe, North America, Northern China and even in Northern India.

Those who experienced our Northern Lights Tour from India during this time got to witness the rarer colours of the aurora, including violet and white. Scientists are still unclear as to the causes of solar storms.
