Bourg d' Indre-et-Loire , Mettray takes place just a few kilometers from Tours, along the Choisille valley. The one which takes its name from the Dolmen of the fairy cave (the large stone placed there is called mettere in Latin), is located at the gates of Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire , Charentilly or La Membrolle-sur-Choisille .
Occupied since Prehistory, as evidenced by the megaliths still present on site, the territory of Mettray developed mainly in the Middle Ages. But it is above all for its agricultural and penal colony that the town is mainly known. Opened between 1840 and 1937, it welcomed children and adolescents placed voluntarily or incarcerated, like the author Jean Genet.
Today, passing tourists will be able to enjoy its rich architectural heritage. Between church and bourgeois houses, the town has no shortage of attractions.

Mentioned at the end of the 13th century, the Saint-Symphorien church underwent significant expansions between the 16th and 17th centuries. Thoroughly restored in the 18th century, it is particularly known for having housed a large number of burials of local notables and priests. Inside, it is possible to admire an old glass roof, in the apse, now classified as a Historic Monument. The latter represents the presentation of the lords of Mettray to the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus by Saint Peter and Saint Michael.
Several castles and manor houses reveal their attractions all over the commune: Mettray manor house from the 15th century, Ribellerie castle from the 18th century, Grandes-Brosses castle from the 18th century, Berruries manor from the 19th century, La Cornillière from the 18th century or the 19th century Moulin Neuf, now transformed into a leisure center.
Events and festivities
The weekly market is held every Wednesday morning. A farmers' market favoring short circuits and organic products takes place on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at La Grande Aubinière.
The carnival is held every year in March.
Concerts are organized in June on the occasion of the Music Festival.
At the beginning of July, time for the summer party and its activities for the whole family, including a garage sale.
A Christmas market is offered in December.
