20 Magical Things to Do in Bimini, Bahamas

10/27/2023 by Nicole Edwards Leave a Comment

Bimini are two islands on the edge of the Gulf Stream, where some say you can snorkel the road to the lost city of Atlantis. But trust me: it gets even more amazing than that. I had great fun exploring these islands I used to sail to with my family about 20 years ago.

Read on for 20 magical things to do in Bimini, Bahamas, a place that about two thousand people also call home.

How to Get to Bimini

things to do in bimini bahamas

There are at least four ways to get to Bimini: private boat, cruise ship, plane or seaplane, and ferry.

  • Private boat – Avoid crossing the Gulf Stream with a north wind, and be sure to fly the quarantine flag until you clear customs and immigration.
  • Cruise ship – Over the past twenty years, North Bimini has developed to accommodate large cruise ships; then in 2021, Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port opened up. Cruise lines like Carnival, Crystal, Virgin, and MSC can now dock directly at the island.
  • Plane or seaplane – The quickest way to get to Bimini from Florida is by plane. You will land in South Bimini and then can take the quick ferry ride to North Bimini. (You can find flights here .) If you want to fly by seaplane, you will land and dock at North Bimini. Tropic Ocean Airways is the only seaplane line in Florida that offers flights to Bimini (and the rest of the Bahamas ).
  • Ferry – Because Bimini is only fifty miles off the coast of Florida, you can also take a ferry from Fort Lauderdale or Miami .

Know Before You Go

Things to do in Bimini bahamas

  • The best time to visit is in April and May, because of the mid-70s weather, the northeasterlies having dissipated, and the hurricanes being still at bay. You’ll also avoid a lot of the big crowds, which tend to congregate in January, February, and March.
  • Fellow female travelers, you must be wearing a shirt if you enter a public building — a sports bra or swimsuit top won’t cut it.
  • The Bahamian dollar is equal to one US dollar, and the latter is accepted most everywhere.
  • Everybody is on island time, which means shops open when the owner arrives and close when the owner leaves.
  • Bring a hydrocortisone cream in case you get into a poisonwood tree. You’ll also need your passport, some reef-friendly sunscreen , hat, and sunglasses, as well as a good pair of water shoes and a sweater (the breeze gets chilly at night).
  • Don’t pick starfish out of the water. Even just a few minutes of air time will kill them.

Things to Do in North Bimini

You’ll probably spend most of your time in North Bimini. This is where a majority of the restaurants and popular attractions (and Biminites) are. The entire island is no longer than seven miles and no wider than a football field. In fact, I could stand on a hill and see the ocean on both sides. Despite its small size, there is so much richness to experience here.

1. Explore the seven-mile island

things to do in bimini bahamas

After I cleared customs and immigration, I skipped down the narrow streets and set off to explore the parks, beaches, and restaurants, on down to where Resorts World Bimini took over (it felt like I was back in Florida when I reached the gates). I loved seeing the piles of conch shells, chatting with the Bahamians, and admiring the colorful buildings. You can’t get lost! (If you’re not up for walking, you can rent a golf cart . )

2. Eat a loaf of Bimini bread

things to do in bimini bahamas

I’m not kidding. You’ll probably end up eating the entire loaf, it’s that good. I went to Nate’s Bimini Bread and Catering during mid-morning, when he was still baking, and got a some hot from the oven. The smell was intoxicating, and the loaf melted in my mouth. I asked Nate about the recipe; he told me it was “made with love,” but I think it’s sourdough based. The coconut is probably fresh from the island (there are a lot of coconut trees here!). The rest is a delicious mystery.

3. Lounge at a beach

Things to do in Bimini bahamas

Check out any of North Bimini’s beaches: Alice Town, Radio, and Beach 360. You’ll find Bahama beaches are one of a kind: the sand is made from finely ground coral, so it’s smooth to the touch and has a slight pink hue. And, looking out over the ocean, there is every shade of blue before the sea meets the sky. I spent hours resting beneath the sun and dipping into the gin-clear water to cool off.

4. Walk the low-tide spit

things to do in bimini bahamas

Heading north, you’ll stumble upon a little trail on the right-hand side, just as you reach the piney part of North Bimini. That leads to a rock path that is about ankle-deep at low tide. You can take that path to a small island, where the trail zigzags to the end and pops you right in the middle of one of Bimini’s major coves. It was a neat place to watch the seaplanes come in and look back at the rest of the island.

5. Visit the War Memorial and Heroes Park

things to do in bimini bahamas

This park honors the Biminites who lost their lives in World Wars I and II, recognizes leaders of their community and prominent sports figures, and features the victims of the December 2005 Chalk Flight 101 crash. Right off King’s Highway (Bimini’s only main road), it’s a good place to rest and appreciate the community.

6. Go to the Dolphin House

things to do dolphin house bimini bahamas things to do in Bimini Bahamas

If you were one of those children who dreamed of living in a house built of seashells and sea glass (and concrete and rebar), visit the Dolphin House, probably the most artistic hand-built house in the world. It was started in 1993 by Ashley Saunders, the builder and the tour guide, who was inspired by the wild dolphins during a swim and wanted to build them a monument.

things to do in bimini bahamas

It’s still under construction today, as he adds bits and pieces and makes the second floor into a B&B. The Dolphin House has withstood nine hurricanes and has one of the best rooftop views on the island from the lighthouse on top.

Admission is $10; you can either walk straight up to the house with a small group of people, or officially arrange a tour . Bring something for Ashley to plaster into the wall, and look for the token I left behind: a broken wooden clothespin with “S/V Arta” written on one side!

7. Visit a cemetery

things to do in bimini bahamas

I think that if you want to get a sense of the community, you should walk through a cemetery. There was something about the small size of the island, speaking with the Biminites who were born and raised and still live here, and seeing the cemeteries that really made me feel like I was here to appreciate and to learn. There are several cemeteries on the island, most behind churches.

8. Walk into Wesley Methodist Church

things to do in bimini bahamas

Possibly the most photographed church in all the Bahamas, Wesley Methodist was first established in 1858. In the 1920s, the original building was destroyed in hurricanes; it was rebuilt in 1928. Most services are held by visiting ministers.

9. Order a conch salad

Conch salad Bimini Bahamas things to do in Bimini Bahamas

Conch is a staple of the Bahamian diet. There’s even such a thing as a conch burger (I had one in Great Harbour Cay). In Bimini, I went to Joe’s Conch Shack, which is built on stilts right over the water, providing excellent views. The conch was amazing, but definitely go light on the hot sauce at first, adding more as you wish. Just a few drops was good enough for me, and I can tolerate some heat!

10. Find yourself a conch shell

things to do in Bimini Bahamas

Some shops sell conch shells, but you can find your own just about anywhere that you look — there are probably hundreds of conch shell piles and thousands of empty shells. If you’re searching in the water, just check to make sure nobody is home! If there is a creature still inside, leave it where you found it; there is a conch harvesting season with rules about how big they need to be.

11. Swim with the wild rays, sharks, and dolphins

Bimini Bahamas things to do swim with sharks things to do in Bimini Bahamas

I was fortunate enough to be able to swim with rays and sharks on almost all of my snorkeling excursions, but I did not see any wild dolphins. If you want to increase your chances, you can book the full-day Honeymoon Harbor excursion here , on which you’re taken to dolphin hot spots.

12. Snorkel the Sapona wreck

things to do in bimini bahamas

The SS Sapona was a 282-foot steamship made out of concrete. It carried cargo until it sank in 15 feet of water in a 1926 hurricane. Because the area is so shallow, it’s a popular snorkeling spot. Part of the wreck is below the water and the rest is above. I could snorkel through holes in the walls, eventually finding the engine room. It was cute to see all the colorful little fish nibbling away at the wreck. The Honeymoon Harbor snorkeling excursion also brings you to the Sapona wreck.

13. Snorkel Bimini Road (the Road to Atlantis)

things to do in bimini bahamas

It might not look like much, but I decided to go anyway, and I’m glad I did. While swimming above the “road,” it did really look like some sort of infrastructure from a past civilization. The shape of the stones and the way they were arranged, side by side, was too intentional to be a work of Mother Nature. Keep in mind that there is a lot of open water here, and it is about twenty feet deep. You can book an excursion here .

14. Snorkel the arch

things to do in bimini bahamas

There are three rocks off the coast of North Bimini with some pretty wildlife and unique structures. Definitely go when the water is calm, because the rocks are jagged. The biggest rock is the one that has the arch. If you don’t have your own boat, you can get here via the Bimini Road excursion .

15. Take the ferry to South Bimini

things to do in bimini bahamas

Even if you don’t want to explore South Bimini, I recommend you hop on the ferry for a short harbor experience. I think the fare is $3, though they won’t say no to more! There is no ferry schedule, but from what I could gather, the captain unties from the wharf when people are there. If you miss the ferry, don’t worry: Just wait a few minutes and it’ll be right back, because the ride across the channel is less than three minutes. Unless you have your own kayak or dinghy, there’s no other way to cross (the current is too strong to swim).

Things to Do in South Bimini

South Bimini has Bimini’s land-based airport and is where most long-term vacationers stay. So, it’s a quieter island with fewer attractions, all of which are more spread out. But South Bimini was probably my favorite, because there were the following things to do:

16. Get a tour from a local

things to do in bimini bahamas

The best way to explore South Bimini is by golf cart, and the locals know that. They will kindly take an hour of their time and give you a tour. I was fortunate enough to make friends with one of the ferry crew, and he gave me and my boat buddy a tour of the entire island, bringing us to all the places I have listed below.

17. Drink from the Fountain of Youth

things to do in bimini bahamas

It’s called the Fountain of Youth, because it’s one of the few freshwater springs in Bimini. It’s completely natural, but the Biminites have built a well around it to capture the water. There’s a lovely five-gallon bucket on a rope that you have to sling down into the well. The bottom of the bucket looks kind of gross, and the well has some leaves in it, but I took a sip anyway, and it tasted just like water!

18. Harvest a coconut on a nature trail

Things to do in Bimini Bahamas pick coconuts

There are so many coconut trees, but you can’t harvest just any coconut. It has to be ripe, which is when the fruit is a yellow-green. After you climb the tree, you need to twist the coconut until it breaks free. Then you jump back down onto the ground and slam the coconut against the trunk until it cracks open. Now you can drink from it until the water is all gone. When the coconut is empty, smash it against the tree until it splits completely in half. You can then push the flesh off with your fingernail before resuming your hike.

19. Find the Pirate’s Well

things to do in bimini bahamas

This is another freshwater spring, but there is no bucket on a rope to access the water. The water is also a bit murkier compared to the Fountain of Youth. I wouldn’t drink from it; however, there are nature trails that lead off the Pirate’s Well, which makes this a good landmark on your Bimini explorations.

20. Relax on a secluded beach

things to do in bimini bahamas best islands in the bahamas

Unlike North Bimini, South Bimini beaches are devoid of waterfront bars and crowds. Unless there’s somebody at their vacation home, you will have the entire soft, pink beach and sparkling-clear blue sea to yourself. I spent a few hours playing in the ocean and sunning on the sand.

If you’ve visited or plan to visit Bimini, which of these things seems most magical to you?

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Bimini in the Bahamas

Bimini has epic scuba diving, luxury beachfront hotels, and delicious seafood — and it’s just 50 miles from Florida

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism

Located just 50 miles off the coast of Florida, Bimini is a collection of cays and islands in the Bahamas that offer a mix of adventure and rest. Cerulean waters house bygone shipwrecks, bonefish flats, and a coral reef system teeming with wildlife and tropical currents, making it one of the most attractive diving and fishing spots in the region. “I’ve spent most of my life exploring Bimini’s beautiful waters. The thrill of being out on the shallow, sandy flats and reeling in the catch will never get old,” said Ansil Saunders, a renowned native boat builder and bone fisherman, as well as a local legend who once went boating with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during his visit to the island.

The main tourist areas of North and South Bimini are separated by a narrow ocean passageway, with ferries connecting the two islands. Alice Town, located on the larger North Bimini, hosts the island’s major tourist attractions and hotels, including the 750-acre luxury beachfront property Resorts World Bimini . “Bimini is also rich in history, and there are many local gems worth exploring. The island was home to famous figures like Ernest Hemingway and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and you can learn all about its past from local historians like Ashley Saunders, a local artist who spent more than 25 years constructing the Dolphin House Museum entirely out of found objects and recycled materials,” said Grace Giste, officer of the Bimini Tourist Office, The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments, and Aviation. Whether you choose to fish for yellowtail or snapper, dive off historic shipwrecks, or try your luck at a casino, there are plenty of options on this small yet mighty island. Here's how to plan an unforgettable trip to Bimini.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Made from salvaged and recycled materials, the dolphin- and ocean-inspired Dolphin House Museum was created by artist and historian Ashley Saunders, who offers daily walking tours of the colorful space.
  • With a prime oceanfront location, Resorts World Bimini has 305 rooms and a popular casino to try your luck.
  • Enjoy fresh conch prepared a number of ways at Stuart’s Conch Salad Stand, an open-air, well-loved seafood shop in Bailey Town.
  • Get up close and personal with all the marine life Bimini has to offer, thanks to a number of excursions available at Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center .
  • Pair your cocktail with enviable ocean views at Ebbie and Pat's Bar & Grill , situated directly on the water.

Resorts World Bimini

For a prime location with plenty to do, check into the expansive Resorts World Bimini . The 750-acre luxury beachfront property spans approximately half the island and features miles of white-sand beaches, three pools, 10 restaurants, and a world-class casino. All accommodations come with balconies, some with ocean views.

Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina

Situated in the tourist-friendly center of Alice Town, Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina is a boutique hotel that first opened in 1947. The 51 accommodations here range from deluxe rooms and cottages to penthouses, and the property is also home to Bimini Seafood Company & Conch Bar, Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center, and a full-service marina, which boasts 75 slips that can accommodate boats up to 140 feet.

Visit Dolphin House Museum.

Step into a prismatic world constructed of recycled and salvaged materials and created by artist and historian Ashley Saunders, a fifth-generation local. Built in 1937, the Dolphin House Museum is a popular attraction for daily walking tours. Conch shells, sea glass, and other materials make the structure glow with detail, each piece serving as an homage to the dolphins that have inspired Saunders’ life.

Explore Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center.

As the first dive operation in Bimini, Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center employs several dive boats, including a 60-foot glass-bottom vessel that can accommodate divers, snorkelers, and sightseers. In addition to diving and snorkeling, the center offers great hammerhead and wild dolphin safaris. It's also a member of the Reef Rescue Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the condition of coral reefs. Popular activities to book include a half-day snorkel tour that makes stops at the crystalline Honeymoon Harbour and SS Sapona shipwreck .

Relax at Radio Beach.

A popular spot for both visitors and residents, Alice Town’s Radio Beach offers some of the island’s most beautiful sunsets and sapphire waters. It’s also the only beach in Bimini that has public facilities such as vendors and toilets. “If you're looking to indulge in local food and drinks, Radio Beach is a great place to start. It's lined with Bahamian restaurants and bars, where you can try local favorites like conch salad, fresh seafood, and island-inspired cocktails, according to Giste.

Hit the casino at Resorts World Bimini.

Whether you’re a high roller or a low-stakes gambler, the 10,000-square-foot, live-action casino at Resorts World Bimini features popular table games and more than 160 slot machines. Plus, you’ll be mere steps away from a number of restaurants.

Bimini Seafood Company & Conch Bar

Located in the Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina, this restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a marina setting overlooking the island’s famous bonefish flats. Dishes include both American and Bahamian cuisine, with house favorites such as coconut curry shrimp and grilled ribs.

Smitty's Beach Bar & Restaurant

Enjoy beach views and a lively atmosphere at this casual outdoor restaurant. You’ll be able to enjoy a number of Bahamian classics, including conch, of course, alongside diners belting karaoke tunes.

Nate’s Bimini Bread

A family institution and popular bakery, Nate's Bimini Bread is the place to go for outstanding mounds of coconut rolls, guava and cream cheese loaves, and cinnamon raisin buns, all baked fresh every morning.

Stuart’s Conch Salad Stand

Enjoy fresh conch and lobster salad alongside a house-made hot sauce — if you can stand the heat — at this renowned stand , which has been in business for more than 20 years. Try a bowl of the roughly chopped conch, elevated with citrus juice, onions, tomatoes, and green peppers.

Though temperatures in the Bahamas are warm and pleasant year-round, the most popular time to visit Bimini for temperate, dry weather is mid-December to mid-April. This time of year brings more crowds, though, typically resulting in higher hotel prices. Visitors should also be mindful of hurricane season, which falls between June and November.

Bimini is about 50 miles east of Florida. The most affordable option is to take the two-hour Balearia ferry from Fort Lauderdale, which offers charters three days a week. There's also a high-speed FRS Caribbean ferry that departs from Miami for a two-hour ride to Bimini. To arrive via air, take a 25-minute flight on Tropic Ocean Airways from Fort Lauderdale or Miami.

Jeremy J Saunders/Getty Images

If arriving by plane, you’ll land at South Bimini Airport. Most visitors stay on north side of the island. To get there, flag a taxi at the airport; it's a five-minute ride to the South Bimini ferry dock ($5 per person). Then, take the public ferry to North Bimini ($8 per person). Note that most vendors throughout the Bahamas only accept cash.

Once on Bimini, travelers can arrange a golf cart rental, which is the main mode of transportation on the island. Book one starting at $90 per day with Bimini Golf Cart Rentals . Meanwhile, guests staying at Resorts World Bimini can reserve a golf cart provided only to hotel guests. There are no car rentals on Bimini, and many places are accessible via walking.

Located just 50 miles off Florida’s coast, Bimini consists of two islands: North Bimini and South Bimini. Being the closest of the Bahamian islands to the U.S., it’s an ideal destination for a long weekend in lavish tropical surroundings. You can catch a 30-minute flight on a seaplane from Miami or a little longer one from Fort Lauderdale.

Bimini has only recently come onto the tourist radar, which means it’s less crowded and touristy than Nassau. What you can expect are glorious beaches, some serious game fishing, great food and accommodation, and plenty of history.

The best time to visit is between mid-November and late April. In the summer months, it can be very hot and humid. Note that American citizens don’t need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

11 Fantastic Things to Do in Bimini Bahamas | For an Amazing and Memorable Vacation

1. fountain of youth.

Legend has it that Spanish explorer and seafarer Ponce de Leon was lured to the island by tales of the Fountain of Youth in the early 1500s. While he failed to find the magic fountain, the legend lives on. Today the locals refer to a well along the airport road of South Bimini as the Fountain of Youth . Carved out of limestone rock thousands of years ago, surrounded by tropical vegetation and a low, white picket fence, you may as well take a sip. The water is super clear. A signpost marks the well.

underwater limestone dubbed Bimini Road

2. Bimini Road

According to Greek legend, the rich city of Atlantis sank into the ocean in one single day. This myth has inspired divers, explorers, and scientists forever on the hunt for the sunken legendary city. Since its discovery by divers in 1968 in North Bimini, Bimini Road’s origins are hotly disputed. It’s a rock formation 18 feet underwater consisting of a straight line of rectangular limestone blocks that runs for half a mile. This discovery led some to believe that the road to Atlantis had finally been found. Others could not find signs that the road was man-made and believe it’s a natural structure. Be that as it may, it’s a fabulous snorkeling experience to see this unique road and let your imagination run riot. You can visit on a boat trip .

3. See Dolphins in the Wild

Experience the unparalleled dolphin encounter by swimming with dolphins in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Unlike your typical dolphin excursions, where animals are confined to a designated area, this experience allows guests to explore well-known dolphin hangouts and observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Pro Tip: For spectacular water excursions and safaris book a trip with Bimini Scuba Center located on north Bimini.

4. Dolphin House Museum

For a one-of-a-kind experience of marine life on dry land, head to Alice Town in North Bimini and visit the Dolphin House Museum . It doesn’t house fish but is a unique and artistic structure that is the result of a private initiative by writer and retired school teacher Ashley Saunders.

He got his fellow Bahamians to collect and donate materials from the island, some from shipwrecks, some from beaches, and even some from demolition sites. Saunders also contributed his own resources to build this colorful Alice Town Museum dedicated to dolphins, which he opened to visitors in 1993. Every inch of the thick walls of the Dolphin House Museum is covered in a mosaic made from shells, coins, glass, and every other imaginable material. You have to see it to believe it. Saunders does love marine life and dolphins especially.

The wreck of the SS Sapona on Bamini, an island in the Bahamas.

5. SS Sapona

A shipwreck with history.

The partly submerged shipwreck of the SS Sapona sits in 15 feet of water a few miles off Bennetts Harbour in South Bimini. Commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson as a troop transporter, it is built of concrete because steel was in short supply at the time. As it was completed after WWI, it was sold for scrap to Carl Fisher, the Miami entrepreneur, and then saw lives as a casino, a supply ship, and, most famously, storage for contraband alcohol during Prohibition.

Fisher reportedly intended to use it as a floating speakeasy as well. During a hurricane in 1926, it ran aground, with some structures still sticking out. The site is full of tropical fish, so it’s a paradise for snorkelers for several reasons. Scuba divers can even venture to the ocean floor and have a peek inside what’s left of the hull and see part of the inner workings.

Pro Tip: If you are into shipwrecks, check out the Gallant Lady , another hurricane victim on the rocks of North Bimini, too.

Clear waters of an islet in Bimini

6. Bimini Beaches

The glorious, sandy beaches of Bimini are where you want to relax during part of your weekend. The best ones to visit from your cruise ship are along the western side of North Bimini. You are spoiled for choice, and which one you choose to get a tan on depends on what you want from a beach.

Radio Beach

If you crave utter luxury, head for Resorts World Beach Club near Alice Town. Cabanas, loungers with comfy cushions, and cold drinks await to pamper you on Radio Beach. A much simpler option where you need to bring your own towels and maybe a picnic is to be found at Radio Beach , just off the Queen’s Highway.

Honeymoon Harbour Beach

Accessible by boat or jet ski only is the lovely Honeymoon Harbour Beach on small Gun Cay. A boat service will take you there for a small fee.

7. Bimini Wahoo Mayhem

The Bimini Wahoo Mayhem is the biggest and best-paying big game fishing tournament in the Bahamas . This amazing and exciting spectacle is staged at the Bimini Club annually in November, during peak Wahoo season in one of the best destinations for Wahoo in the world. Teams come from all around the Caribbean come to compete in this world-class event.

8. Nightlife In Bimini

If you want to end your days of fun and sun dancing and clubbing, you have come to the right place. Just head for the King’s Highway in Alice Town on North Bimini, and you’ll find one bar after the other.

Golfers will find the Windsor Downs on the private Car Cay island, which also features tennis courts. The choice is yours.

If you like hiking and enjoying nature up close and personal, take to the one-mile Bimini Nature Trail loop on South Bimini.

10. Bimini Craft Center

No holiday is complete without buying a few souvenirs to take home. On Bimini , you find some excellent crafts, from wood carvings to printed canvas, jewelry made from shells, and many objects crafted from straw. Not to be forgotten: the world-famous Bimini bread. Just stroll along the Bimini Craft Center on King’s Highway in Alice Town, and you are sure to find a little something.

Pro Tip: On land, you get around best on bicycles or golf carts.

11. Test Your Luck at the Casino

If you are looking for something other than a beach day, head to the Resorts World Casino for an alternative experience.

This local casino boasts an impressive selection of games, such as poker, blackjack, craps, Baccarat, and roulette, along with ever-popular slot machines. There are not too many places where you can enjoy a lively casino atmosphere while enjoying picturesque ocean views.

Best Restaurants In Bimini

Bimini Fun Facts

Ernest Hemingway wrote The Old Man and the Sea here (you can visit the house he often stayed in) and indulged in deep-sea fishing and rum drinking. Other well-known personalities who have left their mark are Jimmy Buffett and Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King spent some time in Bimini to prepare his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Look up legendary game fisher and boat builder Ansil Saunders’s house in memory of his friend and best client MLK whom he took around the island. Talk to people about him for great stories.

If you want a real insight into island life, go to a bookshop and look for How To Be a True-True Bahamian . I got lucky and found a copy of this most hilarious tale of being a Bahamian. If you can’t find it, you may want to order it from Amazon before setting off. You’ll enjoy your trip twice as much.

How Do I Get Around Bimini Island?

The Bimini Tram runs down the King’s Highway during the day or you can rent a golf cart or a bike, which can be arranged in advance or at the resort. When you visit Bimini islands, remember that in the Bahamas they drive on the left side of the road.

Where To Go Shopping on Bimini Island?

The Big Game Club Resort’s Outfitter Store has everything you need, from the latest clothing to fishing supplies and sundries. Just a short walk from the resort there is the Bimini Craft Center with authentic Bahamian clothing and products.

Once you’re off from your cruise ship, a dress code is required in churches, restaurants, and casinos where you can’t walk in wearing beachwear. Covering your swimsuit with shorts or a long shirt when walking city streets is recommended. The dress code is more flexible in more relaxed and remote areas.

Is Bimini Part of the So-Called ‘Out Islands’?

Yes, it is. Abaco, Andros, Bimini, Cat, Eleuthera, Exuma, and Long Island are some of the more noteworthy Out Islands. The Out Islands are known for fishing, scuba diving, sailing, pristine beaches, and clear blue water. They are also less commercially developed.

What cruise ships can dock at the bimini pier, when is the best time of year to visit bimini island, how to get from south bimini to north bimini, is bimini a private island for virgin voyages, does bimini, bahamas have an airport, what airlines fly to bimini, bahamas, do you need a passport when traveling to bimini, are prices in bimini expensive, where to stay in bimini, bahamas, what’s the weather like in bimini.

Bimini is 54 miles from Miami

The small island chain is about 54 miles directly east of Miami, Florida .  It’s also the western most district of the Bahamas. Mainland United States is actually closer to Bimini than the capital city, Nassau, which is over 130 miles to the southeast .

The proximity to the US allows for some to make day trips to the islands by way of high speed ferries. More on that later.

Bimini is only about 9 square miles in totality. Two main islands make up most of the island chain: North Bimini and South Bimini.

North Bimini is 7 miles long and only about 750 feet wide.  South Bimini is about 3 miles long and about half a mile wide.

The water around the islands is very shallow at 20-30 feet in most places. To the west, between Miami and Bimini the Gulf Stream flows northward through water 6,000 feet deep, and this brings a variety of fish to the area.

There’s a reason this island of the Bahamas is so popular for sport fishing. The marine life is diverse around Bimini.

This small island has a rich history waiting to be explored. From its early days as a haven for pirates to its current status as an up-and-coming paradise, Bimini is sure to amaze you with its beauty and culture.

Known by locals as “ The Gateway to the Bahamas ,” Bimini was first settled by indigenous Lucayan people and still retains its Lucayan name “Bimini” which means “small islands” .

The island originally was attractive mainly due to its plentiful fish population and peaceful atmosphere – traits which still define Bimini today.

A world-famous vacation spot for vacationers, the island earned its fame through the contributions of journalist and author Ernest Hemingway .

Hemingway’s many accomplishments, including the two novels “Old Man and the Sea” and “Islands in the Stream,” were inspired by his visits to Bimini .

Bimini is also known as the Big Fish Fishing Capital of the World because it has some of the greatest ocean fishing in the world.

gateway to the bahamas, Bimini islands

On July 4th, 2021 Bimini welcomed its first cruise ship into the newly finished Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port , the official name for the cruise port on North Bimini island.

The single-pier port was developed by Resorts World Bimini.  It is just one of three ports in the Bahamas that is situated on a non-private island, along with Freeport and Nassau.

With a population of only about 2,000 full time residents, Bimini Bahamas is an exotic destination not yet overrun by tourism and commercialism. You won’t find a Diamonds International in this vacation spot. Beaches are clean and open.

Quiet streets have more golf carts and bicycles than actual cars . And with only one cruise ship docked at the pier at one time, the cruise passenger population is at least slightly limited.

There are no bridges between North and South Bimini . However, there are ferries that will take you back and forth so you can explore some of the activities on our list below.

I also recommend renting a golf cart for easy transportation on your own. It costs $60 for the entire day and travel on the island is very laid back and simple. Just remember to drive on the left hand side of the road. Queens Highway is the main road through North Bimini.

Most cruise lines offer an excursion to Resorts World Bimini which has a casino and beach club. The resort provides the free tram service to the resort and other drop off locations. No ticket is needed. You can walk out of the port area from the cruise ship, but it’s a fairly long walk.

The first tram stop is Resorts World Bimini. The 2nd stop on the tram is Paradise Beach where you can rent loungers, umbrellas, kayaks, and the golf carts mentioned above.

Ultimate List of Things to Do and See in Bimini Bahamas

1. beach club.

When visiting Bimini with Virgin Voyages, the Beach Club is included at no extra charge.  Virgin partnered with World Resorts to offer the Beach Club as the cruise line’s “private island destination”. The Beach Club has two swimming pools and an exclusive private area for guests staying in Rock Star suites.

A buffet lunch is served at the Beach Club and soft drinks are included, just like on Virgin ships.

When visiting Bimini with other cruise lines, there is a charge to get in the Beach Club and you will also have to pay for food and basic beverages. There is a free tram that will take you from the pier right to the Beach Club.

2. See the underwater, mystical Bimini Wall (Bimini Road)

For a truly remarkable underwater experience that comes with some controversy, check out a dive to the Bimini Wall. This underwater rock formation, sometimes called the Bimini Road has had many conspiracy theories as to its origin.

Is it an ancient road to the lost city of Atlantis?  Was it caused by a tsunami? Man-made or natural, the large rectangular limestone slabs have inspired all kinds of theories. The structure is about half a mile long and is 18 feet below the water.

3. Experience the best beaches of Bimini

This is the perfect destination for those wanting a relaxing beach day. Use our list for the best sandy beaches in Bimini, or you can just rent a golf cart and drive around the small island to find them yourself.

You will find some great beach locations at the south end of the north island. The waters of Bimini are truly remarkable.

One of the many white sandy beaches in Bimini

Below are some of the highest rated beaches in the Bimini islands. These beaches never feel overcrowded, but some are more secluded than others.

  • Radio Beach – Probably the most popular beach due to its beauty and easy access, Radio Beach is very close to Alice Town. It’s the only public beach on the islands to have public amenities as bathrooms and food vendors.
  • Tiki Hut Beach – With a 2 mile-long stretch of white sand, Tiki Hut Beach offers a great getaway. Palm trees and vegetation provide are all around, helping make the beach on South Bimini island seem even more secluded.
  • Porgy Bay Beach – This is a cozy, quaint beach in North Bimini just south of Resorts World Bimini in Bailey Town.
  • Spook Hill – Shallow and calm waters can be found at Spook Hill beach, and it’s one of the most popular beaches in Bimini for good reason. The name comes from the proximity of the beach to a local cemetery but don’t let that scare you away from the soft as talc sand.
  • Blister Beach – A lovely beach in North Bimini known for its calmer waters and great snorkeling, this beach also goes by the name Bimini Bay Beach.
  • Resort World Bimini Beach – Perfect for a resort style beach, this area is a 4.5 acre beach with room for up to 2,000 people.
  • Local Cays with great beach spots – If you feel like getting a little further away from the main Bimini islands you can check out some incredible local cays. Turtle Rocks, Piquet Rocks, Holm Cay, North Cat Cay (Honeymoon Harbour), and South Cat Cay are just a few local beaches to get away from it all.

4. Go on a shark dive with Bimini Bull Run

You will get up close an personal with Caribbean bull sharks on this Bimini island excursion. The number of sharks you see while on this cage dive is really quite impressive. Shark fishing is actually illegal in the Bahamas and these creatures thrive in the crystal clear waters.

All you need is a diving mask and a belt and you can plunge into the shark-infested waters for a very unique experience. The sharks are given scraps of food all around the cage and the visibility in these waters is second-to-none.

5. Explore the wreckage of the S.S. Sapona

S.S. Sapona’s wreckage has remained in place for almost 100 years, after the concrete ship ran aground during a hurricane in 1926.

The ship was originally commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson and was built to transport troops during the first World War, although it never did so.  The vessel was made out of concrete since steel was not as readily available at the time.

This popular dive site is perfect for snorkeling as well, as the wreck sits in just 15 feet of water. The shipwreck site was used as a bombing target for United States fighter pilots during World War II , so the ship shows significant damage.

But divers are still able to see inside the concrete hull of the ship and find many varieties of marine life around the area. History lovers and diving enthusiasts alike will find something to love at the S.S. Sapona wreckage site.

6. Visit Rainbow Reef and Tuna Alley

These two amazing dive sites are part of the same reef system off the coast of North Cat Cay . A short boat ride south from the main Bimini islands to the Bimini Cays will get you there, and you can explore both the same day.

  • Rainbow Reef is one of the most colorful (hence the name) and shallow reefs in Bimini. Accessible by boat, the maximum depth of the reef is about 20 feet. As part of a protected marine park over 100 species of fish can be found in the area. If you decide to dive or snorkel to the deepest parts of the reef you may find sea turtles and nurse sharks that frequent the reef. Typically this area is teeming with marine life and there is an abundance of coral to admire.
  • Tuna Alley has been called by some divers “the best dive site in the Caribbean”. An underwater wall over 100 feet tall inspires awe in most guests who view this site. This is another reef right near North Cat Cay. There are several canyons under the water that are perfect for exploring. The water is pristine as well, as the Gulf Stream’s current helps wash out any debris and keep the seas looking “ Bimini blue” . The name of this scuba diving site was inspired by the numerous tuna that can often be found near the reef.

7. Explore Victory Reef

Victory Reef is also teeming with life and divers can expect to find fish, sea turtles, lobsters and sharks in the area. Most recommend the site for drift diving, as you can drift along with the marine life and enjoy the tall, vibrant, and abundant coral along this beautiful reef. The reef is located south of North Cat Cay , which is south of the Bimini islands and it’s depth runs from 30 – 80 feet.

8. Tour Dolphin House Museum

For $10 per person , you can check out a very unique museum in Bimini. Built completely from recycled materials, this enchanting building houses eclectic mosaics that reflect the islands history. Perhaps the door on the building says it best, “Welcome to Bimini’s most unique and artistic structure.  Built by Ashley Saunders . A bridge between human and dolphin consciousness. A work in progress since 1993.”

As the museum truly is a work in progress you can expect new things to be added all the time. Keep in mind the museum is also the artist’s home, so it’s more of residence than an exhibit. Still, everywhere you turn in the Dolphin House you will find something unique, built by hand, and made from recycled materials . There are 3 levels of the building to explore with a roof top terrace that overlooks the beautiful water.

9. Stop by the legendary Fountain of Youth

According to legend, Arawak Indians in the area told the explorer Juan Ponce de Leon about a Fountain of Youth in Bimini. In 1513 the ambitious explorer set out to find Bimini but failed to find the islands or the fountain. Then he went on to discover the Gulf Stream and Florida instead.

Today there is a 1,000 year-old well carved out of limestone rock that locals refer to as the Fountain of Youth. The well is fairly deep and there is fresh water way down at the bottom. As far as it’s healing properties…. I will just say that being in the calming atmosphere of Bimini is enough to keep one young.

10. Hilton at Resort World Bimini

Hilton at Resort World Bimini is a beautiful resort. It offers an array of amenities and activities such as a private beach, swimming pool, spa, fitness center, restaurants, parasailing, glass-bottom boat tours, tennis courts and more.

Guests can take advantage of complimentary shuttles to the nearby marina or enjoy sailing excursions on crystal clear waters. From deep sea fishing trips to snorkeling and scuba diving expeditions, there is plenty to do around this stunning property. There’s also a casino inside if you feel like leaving some donations to the 750-acre resort .

11. Visit Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina

This resort has been in its current location in Alice Town since 1947 and is the perfect destination for sports fisherman looking for a big-game fishing experience. While the name of the resort kind of says it all, Bimini Big Game Club Resort has a plethora of activities to take part in.

Amenities include a pool, game area with pool and ping pong, a dive shop, several restaurants, massage services and more. There are hotel and dive packages if you plan on spending the night, or you can book one of their Bimini Dive Safaris to check out Hammerheads and dolphins. Guided fishing excursions from the resort are offered for both new and experienced anglers.  Bimini holds multiple world records for fish caught in the area, so you never know what you might find.

12. Visit Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center

Since the scuba center is located in Bimini Big Game Club Resort I could have just put it in the same category, but I didn’t want those looking exclusively for diving experiences to miss this one. Neal Watson is President of the Bahamas Dive Association and is world-renown for his diving savvy. Oh, and Neal is also Director of Dive Operations for Guy Harvey Outpost so he knows what he’s doing.

Today the scuba center is operated by father and son. There are over 20 dive sites that have buoys marking their location. They are placed and maintained by commercial dive operators. If you want to see any of the reefs or dive sites already mentioned in this article and want a pro to show you the ropes, this is a great starting point.

Because of Bimini’s proximity to the Gulf Stream it is not uncommon for visitors to see spotted dolphins, Loggerhead turtles, Southern stingrays, nurse sharks, and barracudas, along with numerous kingfish and tropical fish.

13. Take a Boat Charter

Whether you want to charter a boat in Bimini for some deep sea fishing, spear fishing, snorkeling, or just some sightseeing around the beautiful Bimini islands, you can easily find a charter boat to take you out.

There are many companies in Bimini that offer fishing charters, and they range from private boats to larger vessels with experienced captains and crew. Many of the boats also come equipped with amenities like air-conditioning, cabins, and full kitchens. You can book a charter for a half-day or full day trip depending on your needs, and prices vary based on the size of the boat, the length of your trip, and other special requests.

Before booking any charter make sure to inquire about their safety record and what type of insurance coverage is provided by the company. That way you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you’re in good hands while out on the water. One of the more popular charter services is Bimini Brown Charters . They have been doing this for a long time and really know the area.

The Beautiful Bimini Bahamas: 8 Things To Do in This Less Crowded Gem

Bimini Bahamas

Do you love the beauty of The Bahamas but don’t love the crowds of New Providence or Paradise Island? Then perhaps it’s time to consider another of the Bahamas’ 16 islands.

Bimini Bahamas is a breathtaking island known for its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and smaller island feel. With only a few resorts and accommodations, it’s a different vacation vibe.

But First: Where is Bimini Bahamas located?

Bimini is a group of islands in the westernmost district of the Bahamas, located about 50 miles east of Miami, Florida. It is one of the closest and most easily accessible islands from the United States.

Bimini is two main islands, North Bimini and South Bimini, and several smaller islands and cays. The capital city is Alice Town, and the island’s population is approximately 2,000.

But are there things to do in Bimini Bahamas? You bet! Here’s our shortlist of 8 must-dos.

1. SS Sapona Shipwreck

Bimini Bahamas

The SS Sapona shipwreck site is a popular scuba diving and snorkeling spot off the Bimini Bahamas coast.

SS Sapona was a concrete-hulled ship built during World War I to transport troops to Europe. The ship was commissioned by the former U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson. However, it was completed after the end of the war. Therefore, Sapona was sold to a private owner and used for various purposes, including as a casino and later as a rum runner during Prohibition.

In 1926 the ship was severely damaged due to a hurricane. Afterward, it was used as a bombing target training during World War II. The boat was eventually abandoned and left to decay off the coast of Bimini.

Today, you will find the Sapona shipwreck just a few miles off South Bimini in the Bennet’s Harbor, lying in 15 feet of water. The ship’s hull is still visible above the water and is home to various marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and rays.

2. The Fountain of Youth

It does exist! The Fountain of Youth in Bimini is a legendary natural spring that is said to have healing and rejuvenating properties for those who drink from it.

According to folklore, the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León learned from the local Indians about the Fountain of Youth in the early 16th century. He began searching for it in 1513, but there was no evidence that he found the fountain. The exact location of the Fountain of Youth in Bimini is not known with certainty, and there is no scientific evidence to support the claims of its magic capabilities.

However, many visitors to Bimini continue searching for the legendary spring; some claim to have experienced health benefits from the island’s natural environment, such as the sea air and warm waters. The legend of the Fountain of Youth has been around for centuries and remains today. Today, the Fountain of Youth is simply a well near the road leading to the South Bimini Airport.

3. Radio Beach

Radio Beach is a beautiful white sand beach in North Bimini, close to Alice Town. The beach gets its name because, during the 1930s and 1940s, it was the site of a radio station. It was used for communication between the US and other countries in the Caribbean and South America via morse code.

Radio Beach is a popular destination for tourists and locals, offering a picturesque setting for swimming, sunbathing, and other beach activities. The beach is known for its calm and clear turquoise waters, perfect for snorkeling and other water sports. Several bars and restaurants are located near the beach, making it a popular spot for food and drinks. Also, visiting Radio Beach is free; you only have to pay for the beach chairs and umbrellas if you want to rent them.

4. Alice Town

Take a walk on the streets of Alice Town, the main town and administrative center of Bimini. It is located in North Bimini and is home to most of the island’s population. Also, it is the largest town on the island and is known for its laid-back atmosphere and picturesque harbor.

The town is named after Alice Stuart, the daughter of a Bahamian governor who visited the island in the early 1900s. Alice Town has several hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops catering to visitors and a marina that provides access to boating and other water activities.

In addition to its charming atmosphere, Alice Town is also known for its historic landmarks, such as the Bimini Museum, which documents the history and culture of the island. In addition, the town is a gateway to some of Bimini’s best beaches and outdoor activities, including snorkeling, diving, and fishing.

5. Dolphin House Museum

The Dolphin House Museum is a unique attraction located in Alice Town. It is a museum that showcases the work of local artist, author, and historian Ashley Saunders. He created a one-of-a-kind structure entirely out of found objects, including shells, stones, and pieces of driftwood.

Saunders began building the Dolphin House in 1993 as a tribute to the dolphins he saw swimming near his home in Bimini. Over the years, he added to the structure, incorporating recycled materials and artifacts from the island’s history and culture. The result is a colorful, mosaic-covered building that tells the story of Bimini.

Visitors to the Dolphin House Museum can tour the interior of the building, which features a collection of artifacts, photographs, and artwork that depict Bimini’s history and culture. The exterior of the building is also a work of art, with intricate mosaics, sculptures, and murals that showcase the island’s natural beauty.

6. Bimini Road

Bimini Bahamas Bimini Road

Bimini Road, also known as the Bimini Wall or Bimini Stones, is an underwater rock formation off North Bimini Bahamas’ coast. The formation comprises several rows of flat, rectangular limestone blocks that some believe are remnants of an ancient, man-made structure.

Many people believe that the Bimini Road is part of the underwater ruins of Atlantis . The formation was first discovered in 1968 by American esoteric (alternative)  archaeologist J. Manson Valentine, searching for evidence of pre-Columbian contact between the Bahamas and the Americas.

Since then, Bimini Road has been the subject of much speculation and debate among researchers, historians, and enthusiasts. Some researchers believe the formation is a natural feature formed by the erosion of the limestone bedrock over time.

Others argue that the arrangement of the stones is too precise to result from natural processes and that humans deliberately placed them at some point in the distant past. Despite decades of research and exploration, the origins and purpose of Bimini Road remain a mystery. However, the formation continues to be a popular attraction for divers and tourists drawn to its enigmatic history.

7. Bimini Healing Hole

The Bimini Healing Hole is a freshwater pond located within the saltwater mangrove swamps on the west coast of East Bimini Bahamas. It is situated in a remote area and can only be reached via boat. Local legend has it that the water in the Healing Hole has therapeutic properties and can cure various ailments, such as arthritis, skin conditions, and even cancer. While there is no scientific evidence to support these claims, the mineral content of the water in the healing hole is believed to have some health benefits.

The Healing Hole is fed by an underwater river and a series of freshwater springs that mix with the surrounding saltwater. The resulting water has a high mineral content, including sulfur, magnesium, and calcium, which are believed to have therapeutic properties. To get to the Bimini Healing Hole, visitors can hire a boat from one of the local tour operators or marinas in Bimini. The boat ride takes about 15-20 minutes from Alice Town to the site of the Healing Hole.

8. Honeymoon Harbor

Honeymoon Harbour is a picturesque bay located on Gun Cay, a small uninhabited island near North Bimini. The bay is named after the many honeymooning couples who have visited the area over the years, attracted by its natural beauty and secluded location. The beach is a popular spot for sunbathing and relaxing, while the surrounding water teems with colorful fish and coral reefs that can be explored by snorkeling or scuba diving.

Visitors can access Honeymoon Harbour by boat from North Bimini or by participating in one of the area’s many snorkeling and diving tours. Also, the bay is home to a colony of friendly stingrays, which have become a popular attraction in their own right. Visitors can interact with the stingrays under the guidance of a knowledgeable guide.

8 Unique Things to do in Bimini Bahamas

bimini tourist attractions

There are so many possibilities and things to do in Bimini Bahamas which you have probably never heard of. Wandering around Alice Town Bimini, you will sneak past a few of the more well-known tourist stops like Radio Beach and Dolphin House. Obviously these places are popular for a reason, however, the true beauty lies in the spots which remain secluded from the tourist rush in Bimini. The key is to find the Bimini beaches which aren’t crowded with tourists coming from the same Bimini day cruise you arrived on. It is these places which make Bimini special.

Don’t get us wrong — laying on any of the Bimini beaches is great — we are only suggesting some of them are more crowded than others and will tell you which ones you should visit so you can leave the rest for the hordes of fellow tourists arriving every day.

8 Unique Things to do in Bimini

Below, we will break down all the special places in Bimini for your trip to Bahamas.

1. Try many in-house activities at Resorts World Bimini

Resorts World Bimini is a huge resort that covers over half the island’s area. With 305 luxury rooms, nearly a dozen bars and restaurants, and three glamorous pools, it is safe to say this place is a spectacle to see.

In the resort, there are plenty of in-house activities that many of the other resorts also offer. However, the sheer size of Resorts World Bimini makes it worth a visit. With a long stretch of white sand beach, excellent coral reefs nearby, and being so near to Florida, Resorts World Bimini has become one of the most popular areas on the island.

Ansil Saunders, Bimini Bahamas bone fishing legend. Take a bimini cruise from florida to Bimini or fly on bahamas air charter flights on a bahamas island hopping tour and witness all the things to do in Bimini.

2. Enjoy an excursion on a one day cruise to Bimini

Even if you are not vacationing in Bimini, you still have the opportunity to make it there for a one day cruise to Bimini. By way of our Bahamas air charter, you can fly to Bimini and see all the island has to offer and be back in the comfort of your own hotel or resort in Florida by nightfall.

Fly around the Bahamas islands for a day, stop in Bimini for a few hours, and see one of the best views known to man from the sky.

There are plenty of things to do in Bimini such as the Fountain of Youth. Other things such as the Bimini Healing Hole, Bimini beaches, and Alice Town Bimini are all great, too.

3. Take a swimming pigs tours to see Exuma pigs in the Bahamas

While on your tour to Bimini, take the plane a little further to the Exumas where you can see Pig Beach on Big Major Cay (Pig Island). This is a popular spot among all Bahamas tourists. Everyone wants to see these beautiful pink pigs swimming in the tropical turquoise sea.

Other places around the country have imported pigs to beaches to try to bring in tourist dollars, but the pigs at Big Major Cay are the original Bahamas swimming pigs. You can fly to Staniel Cay and get a quick five-minute boat taxi to Pig Island as conveniently as it can be. If you go, we suggest arriving early to beat the tourist ferries to the island.

4. Visit the Bimini Healing Hole

One of the most popular Bahamas attractions, the freshwater pond known as the Bimini Healing Hole, is only accessible by boat as it sits within saltwater mangrove swamps.

The pool is known to have healing properties reported by those who have gone swimming in it. Whether or not this myth is true is up for debate. It is something you have to determine for yourself!

When you are ready for a break from the beach, this is one of the more interesting things to do in Bimini.

5. Track down history along Bimini Road (Lost City of Atlantis)

So, it is not clear whether or not this rock formation is from the Lost City of Atlantis or not, but the stretch of flat, straight limestone cuts underwater near Bimini seems too interesting not to wonder whether or not it was once a highway to the lost city.

You have to travel to Bimini and take a snorkel trip to see for yourself. There is plenty of marine life in the area to make it super intriguing as an excursion on your Bimini cruise.

A trip out to Bimini Road is one of the more educational things to do in Bimini.

6. Follow in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway in his summer home

A few interesting historical characters have found inspiration in the Gateway to the Bahamas. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one who wrote his Nobel Prize acceptance speech while visiting Bimini in 1964.

The famous author, Ernest Hemingway, is another who saw Bimini as a bit more than just a one-time visit. Bimini became Hemingway’s creative escape during his years in Florida. He called it his summer house for years and created a well-worn personal footpath during his time in Bimini.

You can visit Bimini and wander around Hemingway’s stomping grounds during the time he spent in Bimini.

7. Try out some of the less visited Bimini beaches

Radio Beach, although beautiful, is one of the most visited beaches in Bimini and even in most of the Bahamas. It is no wonder people flock there; it is on the nearest island to the U.S. and near the Bimini cruise port — not to mention it is absolutely picturesque.

However, if you are more interested in secluded beaches, you are in luck because Bimini is big on white sand beaches. Most of the west coast of the north half of the island has beaches beautiful enough to be the cover of magazines.

If you continue down Radio Beach, you will soon run into Blister Beach and, after that, Spook Hill Beach. Though these are still not normally empty, you can still escape the immediate proximity rush.

Alice Town Beach is also nice. And there are also a few nearby cays with white sand and coral reefs which would be the most secluded beach experiences. Sometimes, it is nice to find the not-so-popular things to do in Bimini.

The shipwreck of Sapona off the coast of Bimini Bahamas. This can be seen as an excursion from Resorts World Bimini off the coast of Alice Town Bimini on the stretch of Bimini beaches.

8. Take Exumas day trips excursions

There are so many day trip opportunities from Bimini. The Exumas are teeming with photogenic scenes of the tropics. And you are not just limited to Staniel Cay and Pig Beach. There are places all over the Exumas waiting to be explored.

Compass Cay offers a sanctuary to walk the seafloor with reef sharks. Bitter Guana Cay gives you the opportunity to track down the last of an endangered species of Northern Bahamian Rock Iguanas. If you are keen, one of the most easily-accessible sunken plane wrecks is found not far-off Norman’s Cay. It is said it was used to transport drugs in-between South America and Miami during the years of Pablo Escobar’s reign of the drug cartels.

These are only a few of the examples of adventures awaiting your Exuma day trip. You can book the most time-efficient tours with Bahamas Air Tours and we will make sure you witness the most for your money.

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in the Bahamas

Written by Becca Blond and Karen Hastings Updated Jan 19, 2024 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

When beach lovers dream of the perfect stretch of powdery sand, lapped by seas in sublime shades of blue, they're probably dreaming of the Bahamas. Encompassing 700 islands and more than 2,000 small cays sprinkled across the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, this tropical paradise lies only 80 kilometers from Florida at its closest point, and it's packed with attractions to keep visitors happily entertained.

Turquoise waters in the Bahamas

Once a haven for pirates and Loyalists, the islands are now a playground for the rich and famous, and anyone who enjoys world-class fishing, boating, diving, snorkeling, and sailing. With so many things to do in the Bahamas, no wonder it's such a popular place to visit.

Nassau, the nation's capital, on New Providence Island , attracts the most tourists. This bustling cruise port is a mix of mega resorts, shops, restaurants, and entertainment complexes. Grand Bahama follows in second place.

The other Bahamas islands, affectionately called the Out Islands , cluster into groups, and each has its own distinct character and charm. Slung like pearls across the shallow Bahama Banks, the Abacos and Exumas offer some of the world's best waters for boating and sailing. Sleepy fishing villages and secluded beaches dot these peaceful islands, and flourishing coral reefs rim many of their shores. Be sure to rent snorkeling gear while you're here.

The other islands offer fun activities for discerning travelers. From the big game fishing of Bimini and the pink-sand beaches of Harbour Island, to bonefishing, regattas, and uncrowded outer cays, it's hard to beat the Bahamas. For those visiting around the New Year, don't miss the throbbing drums and kaleidoscopic costumes of Junkanoo, the nation's most popular festival.

Plan your sightseeing and find out more about the best places to visit in these idyllic islands with our list of the top attractions in the Bahamas.

1. Atlantis Paradise Island

3. exuma cays land and sea park, 4. harbour island, 5. eleuthera island, 6. grand bahama island, 7. diving and fishing on andros island, 8. treasure cay beach, great abaco island, 9. lucayan national park on grand bahama island, 10. cable beach in nassau, 11. elbow cay, 12. green turtle cay, 13. big-game fishing in the biminis, 14. long island, 15. blue lagoon island, the bahamas - climate chart.

Atlantis Paradise Island

Dominating the skyline on Paradise Island, this splashy, salmon-pink resort evocatively recreates the legend of Atlantis in a luxury hotel, entertainment complex, aquarium, and water park. It's one of the top resorts in the Bahamas.

Guests at the hotel score free entry into the popular 141-acre Aquaventure . Spending a day at this whimsical waterscape is one of the most popular things to do in Paradise Island. Whiz down high-speed slides like the Leap of Faith, splash around in more than 20 swimming areas, or lie back and relax as you cruise along the Lazy River Ride.

In the marine habitat at Atlantis Bahamas, hammerhead sharks and swordfish swim through sparkling open-air pools. You'll also find plenty of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues here. The fantasy sea theme continues throughout all the Atlantic attractions, capturing the imagination of young and old alike.

Nassau

One of the most popular cruise ship ports in the Caribbean, Nassau, Bahamas still manages to charm visitors, despite the crowds of camera-toting tourists.

When it comes to things to do in Nassau , you'll find plenty of options. Bask on the white sands of Cable Beach ; explore the shops, restaurants, museums, and candy-colored colonial buildings of downtown and Bay Street ; and shop for souvenirs at the Nassau Straw Market.

It is worth climbing the 66 steps, known as the Queen's Staircase , to the top of Fort Fincastle. From the top, you will find yourself surrounding by lush tropical foliage and some of the best views of Nassau and the sparkling blue sea surrounding it. Allegedly built on the orders of Queen Victoria in the late 1700s, the staircase is carved from solid limestone. Today it is a historic landmark and one of the city's top tourist attractions.

A short catamaran ride away from Nassau, animal lovers can come face to face with dolphins on a day trip to Blue Lagoon Island , and Ardastra Gardens, Zoo, and Conservation Center is a fun place to visit for families, with endangered and threatened species amid four acres of tropical gardens.

Paradise Island , home to the perennially popular Atlantis resort, shimmers on the horizon about five kilometers offshore from Nassau.

Beautiful beach in the Exuma Cays

Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park has some of the most striking seascapes in the Bahamas. Luminous water in shades of electric blue merges with bone-white sand, creating a dazzling backdrop for a range of water sports.

Located in the remote eastern edge of the Bahamas, the park is a no-take-zone and marine protected area, the first of its kind in the Caribbean. The area is popular with divers and boaters, who come here for the quality anchorages, abundant marine life, and crystal-clear waters. On a good day, divers and snorkelers can enjoy 30-meter-plus visibility.

Most people visit this underwater attraction on private boats or live-aboard dive charters. No fishing or shelling is permitted within the park boundaries.

The Exuma Cays are also beautiful. Some are home to movie stars, such as Johnny Depp and David Copperfield, while others are home to exclusive resorts.

If you want to swim with docile nurse sharks, you'll want to head to Compass Cay . Nurse sharks, which can grow to be about 10 feet long, are generally docile. The sharks at Compass Cay are also accustomed to humans.

The gorgeous turquoise water surrounding Compass Cay is also home to some great snorkeling and diving, filled with vibrant coral and all shades of tropical fish and marine life. Kayaking and SUP boarding are other ways to explore the sea around here.

Staniel Cay's swimming pigs

Great Exuma, the largest of the Exumas, Little Exuma , and Staniel Cay are popular with boaters, who come here to enjoy the convivial restaurants. Don't miss Staniel Cay's famous swimming pigs and Thunderball Cave, featured in the namesake James Bond film. Part of an underwater cave system running between Staniel Cay and Pig Island, the cave's interior features a large open amphitheater accessed via a tunnel system. It is filled with brightly-hued fish and coral. Streaks of sunlight illuminate pockets of water through openings in the rocks, making it sparkle. It's best to explore Thunderball on an organized tour as the fast-changing tides can make it dangerous for swimmers and snorkelers. During high tide, the cave is only accessible to scuba divers.

Harbour Island

Pretty Harbour Island sits northeast of its big sister, Eleuthera and has long been a hideaway for the rich and famous. Affectionately known by the locals as "Briland," it's one of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas, as well as the site of the first Bahamian parliament.

English Loyalists settled here in the 1700s, and their cute pastel-hued cottages evoke a bygone era in Dunmore Town , the island's only settlement, where golf carts rule the narrow streets.

But Harbour Island offers more than cute cottages and a rich history. Its picturesque pink-sand beaches are among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean , and its chic resorts lure discerning travelers from around the world. Popular things to do include diving, snorkeling, fishing, and sunbathing along the rosy-hued shores.

Harbour Island is a fun day trip out of Nassau on the Bahamas Fast Ferries Catamaran.

Rainbow Beach on Eleuthera Island

Just a 5-minute ferry ride from Harbor Island, Eleuthera is a wild natural beauty. Although the first Bahamian Parliament was based in Rock Sound on the isle, the 100-mile-long Eleuthera today is a sleepy place, mostly void of tourist development.

You'll want to check out the Glass Window Bridge . It is a natural arch bridge with a narrow opening that creates a window (for which it got its name). Through it, you have views of the deep blue Atlantic Ocean on one side and the turquoise Caribbean Sea on the other. The contrast in colors is breathtaking.

Pay a visit to Queen's Bath , about a mile south of Glass Window Bridge, at low tide. Comprised of a collection of natural pools cut into the rocks, when the tide is out, the pools are delightfully warm and filled just enough to soak in.

Other Eleuthera must-sees include renting an SUV to explore its 150 beaches. The lack of tourists means that these stretches of soft white sand backed by turquoise sea remain pristine and are often empty. Some of the top beaches include Lighthouse Beach , Double Bay Beach, and Twin Coves Beach.

Locals refer to these beaches as elusive because they are not easy to reach. You'll need to drive off-road to find them, and some like stunning Lighthouse Beach also include a 2-mile hike (downhill on the way in, uphill on the way out).

Fishing, diving, and snorkeling trips can also be arranged from Eleuthera. The island is home to about 45 shipwrecks and dive sites are found around them. The Devil's Backbone, on the island's northern coast, is Eleuthera's most famous wreck dive area. Here you can dive amid three ships layered atop one another. The reef is pristine and you'll find numerous fish species.

Governor's Harbour is the island's only town and home to a handful of restaurants. Come on Friday night to join locals for the Fish Fry, which also involves music and dancing. Bahamian fare (more than fish) is cooked al fresco as the setting sun sets the sky a glow.

Lucaya Beach on Grand Bahama Island

The northernmost of the Bahamian islands, Grand Bahama Island is a popular destination for package tourists and cruise ships. The capital, Freeport, is the second biggest city in the Bahamas, though Port Lucaya has now replaced it as the tourist hub for attractions like shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Port Lucaya Marketplace sells jewelry and straw goods, as well as other souvenirs, and the marina is a social hot spot for tourists and boaters.

Despite the island's large all-inclusive resorts and hotels, it's still possible to escape the crowds. Grand Bahama is home to one of the world's longest underwater cave systems .

You can also wander the lush plantings of Garden of the Groves , and nature lovers can spot many native bird species in the three national parks or book a dolphin close encounter.

In 2019, Hurricane Dorian slammed Grand Bahama as a category 5 storm, but most of the island's top tourist attractions are now back up and running.

Coral and fish on Andros Island

The Bahamas' largest landmass, Andros is a haven for anglers and divers. The island is home to the third largest barrier reef in the world , as well as many freshwater blue holes and underwater caves, creating an underwater wonderland for those who love to explore under the sea. Be sure to bring or rent snorkel equipment, so you can view this attraction up close.

Fly fishing is also big here – Andros is often called the bonefishing capital of the world , thanks to its ideal habitats for this prized catch. The island's vast wetlands create channels that are prime fishing and boating areas.

Andros also has the largest protected area in the Bahamas, with five national parks . Nature lovers will appreciate the rich bird life in the mud flats, mangrove swamps, and forests, as well as the island's eco-resorts.

Is shopping more your style? Stop by Androsia Hand Made Batik Factory , where you can buy brightly colored fabrics featuring bold Bahamian motifs.

Aerial view of Treasure Cay and its stunning beach

Skirting the eastern shore of Great Abaco, Treasure Cay Beach is often voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This spectacular stretch of flour-soft sand and aqua water wows visitors who come here to bask on its creamy, crescent-shaped shore.

The beach lies in the upscale resort community of Treasure Cay, which hosts one of the most popular fishing tournaments in the Bahamas.

In 2019, Category 5 Hurricane Dorian devastated Great Abaco Island, including Treasure Cay. Check for the status of tourist amenities here before you visit, as they've had trouble recovering from the hit.

Wooden walkway in Lucayan National Park

There's nothing quite like Lucayan National Park on Grand Bahama Island. One of three national parks on the island, its luscious 40 acres are best known for hosting the " world's longest charted underwater cave systems ." Over six miles of tunnels can be found here.

While one is closed to the public, both Ben's Cave and Burial Mound Cave are accessible via wooden platforms and walkways. Swimming isn't permitted here, but diving is sometimes allowed with a permit. As is suggested by its name, remains of the Lucayans, the island's first settlers, were found in Burial Mound Cave. Both caves are home to various cave dwellers, such as bats.

All six of the Bahamian vegetative zones exist within the park's boundaries. From mangroves to palm and pine forests to coral reefs, you're in for an eco-friendly treat. The pristine and secluded Gold Rock Beach is a must if you're a fan of quiet beaches.

Cable Beach in Nassau

It's easy to see why Cable Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the Bahamas. Located on New Providence Island, nearly six miles west of Nassau's downtown, this vast expanse of silky soft sand calls to weary travelers looking to unwind.

If your idea of a quiet day by the ocean includes parking yourself in a beach chair and not moving, you're in luck. You can rent one on-site, as well as an umbrella, and spend the entire day watching others play in the surf.

If you're a more adventurous type, there are plenty of ways to join in the fun. Over two miles of white sand are at your disposal for pickup games of volleyball or sandcastle building competitions. The calm waves at this locale make it an ideal beach for families, and water sports rentals are easy to find, which means you can be snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding, or kayaking in no time.

While you won't find facilities on-site, there are plenty of nearby hotels and restaurants. In fact, the beach is lined with high-end resorts.

Elbow Cay

Elbow Cay in the Abacos exudes all the charm of a New England-style fishing village. It sits just across the sheltered Sea of Abaco from the boating hub of Marsh Harbour,

Colorful cottages line the main streets of Hope Town, the island's principal settlement, and the center of town is off-limits to vehicles, lending a relaxed, village feel.

Famous for its candy-striped lighthouse, Hope Town is home to a thriving expatriate community who appreciate the island's pretty palm-lined beaches; proximity to Marsh Harbour , the nation's third largest town; and excellent boating opportunities.

Wyannie Malone Historical Museum is a must, and nearby Guana Cay and the Tilloo Cay Reserve , an 11-acre bird habitat, are popular day trips. Hope Town also boasts a well-developed marina.

Elbow Cay was also hit by Hurricane Dorian in September, 2019. Check for the status of attractions and accommodations before your visit.

A ferry runs regularly to Elbow Cay from Marsh Harbour.

Green Turtle Cay

Strolling the streets of Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos feels like stepping back in time to the old Bahamas. East of Great Abaco, this peaceful, five-kilometer-long island is a much-loved hideaway for serenity seekers.

Golf carts are the main mode of transport in the tiny settlement of New Plymouth, a sleepy village of picket-fenced pastel cottages, sprinkled with a few small shops and museums.

Fishing boats bob in the harbor, and visitors can watch the locals haul in their catch of crawfish and conch. Bonefishing is also one of the popular things to do here.

The island's beautiful reef-fringed beaches and crystal-clear waters offer excellent swimming, diving, snorkeling, and boating opportunities.

In 2019, category 5 Hurricane Dorian devastated this island. Locals are still working hard, years later, to reopen attractions. But the real charm of this island is the people and the stunning reefs and beaches – and they are ready and waiting for visitors.

One of the island's top resorts, the Green Turtle Club Resort & Marina , has been revamped. It is a relaxing spot to rest your head, and lies a mere 10-minute walk from some of the island's best beaches.

Green Turtle Cay is a 10-minute ferry ride from Treasure Cay on Great Abaco Island.

Mahi Mahi caught off Bimini

Bimini is known as the " Big Game Fishing Capital of The Bahamas ," and for good reason. The island hosts popular deep-sea fishing tournaments from March to September, and its proximity to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream lures a dazzling diversity of marine life, including everything from marlin to mahi-mahi and manta rays.

Bimini also once lured the likes of Ernest Hemingway with the promise of big catches. He spent several summers in Bimini, fishing and finding inspiration for his novels The Old Man and the Sea and Islands in the Stream .

The fishhook-shaped cluster of islands includes North Bimini, South Bimini, and numerous cays extending south from Pigeon Cay to South Cat Cay. Bimini Island is the closest of the islands to the United States, lying approximately 88 kilometers east of Miami, Florida.

Bimini's fish-rich waters also offer excellent opportunities for diving and snorkeling. Besides the popular shark and dolphin dives, highlights include Rainbow Reef, Sapona Wreck, and Victory Reef.

Cape Santa Maria Beach on Long Island

One of the most beautiful islands in the Bahamas, Long Island lies a little off the beaten path, in the southern half of the archipelago. If you love untouched nature, you'll love Long Island, and this is an optimal place for a romantic couples' vacation.

Almost 130 kilometers long and no more than seven kilometers wide, the island is a land of contrasts, with sandy beaches on the west coast and steep, rocky cliffs along the east.

Long Island is a haven for fishing, diving, and boating. Beach lovers can also bask on its many beautiful, unspoiled pink- and white-sand beaches. The island is also home to Dean's Blue Hole , the deepest known saltwater blue hole in the world .

The Long Island Regatta takes place at Salt Pond in the summer.

Access to the island is mainly by air or ferry service from Nassau.

Blue Lagoon Island

Dolphin encounters, sea lions, inflatable fun parks, a beautiful white-sand beach - you'll find all this and more on Blue Lagoon Island. A visit to this attraction-packed private island, also known as Salt Cay, is one of the most popular things to do in the Bahamas on a cruise. It's only about five kilometers by boat from Nassau.

This is a great spot to hang out with the entire family. Kids will love swimming in the turquoise water, playing on the inflatable water park, and kayaking in the lagoon.

Parents can relax under swaying palms on a double hammock, and animal lovers will enjoy the sea lion and dolphin encounters. A delicious grilled lunch and tropical drinks top off all the fun.
