  • John from Cleveland "This precedent made the Beach Boys the first total, self-contained artists of the rock era, not to be matched for many years to come." self-contained: "Not dependent on others; self-sufficient." Despite the massive effort that came from within included production, since studio musicians recorded a great deal of their music, I do not think this description is accurate, particularly when contrasted against bands that played all of their own parts.
  • Tim from San Mateo In response to the comment about different lyrics between the Candix era version and the version released by Capitol: those lyrics were obviously changed before Capitol ever heard the newer version, so insinuating that Capitol objected to "honeys will be making the scene" is complete rubbish. There are numerous examples where lyrics to Brian Wilson penned tunes get revised, usually by Mike Love, when they are being recorded. My guess is that Mike with Brian changed it to "some honeys will be coming along" since it just flows better.
  • Steve Dotstar from Los Angeles, Ca Spencer-Brian Wilson opens the song with his high voice stacked on the top of harmonies "let's go surfin'now"...etc..then when the solo voice comes on,it's Mike Love.("early in the morning,.."etc)
  • Boogiespencer from Bethesda, Md who opens with lead vocals on this track?
  • Gary from Auckland, New Zealand This has been sales-ranked above known 1962 million-sellers 'Return to Sender' and 'Twistin' the Night Away' by the analysis of Classicbands.com. It broke Capitol sales records in New York City, was ranked #1 in LA, San Diego and the Twin Cities, #3 in San Francisco, #5 in Chicago, etc, etc -- but only #14 by Billboard. This might have been partly because it wasn't guaranteed as much airplay as Dick Clark favorites the Four Seasons, but probably mainly because each regional market was left to take it up individually -- its flip, '409', was first promoted by Capitol as the A-side. 'Surfin' Safari's regional chart runs extended over a period of nine months, from June 1962 to February 1963, not falling all within three months as national hits normally do.
  • Rick from San Juan, United States The early Candix version began with the phrase "some honeys will be makin' the scene" ... ". It was watered-down by Capitol as "some honeys will be coming along" to avoid controversy that would affect airplay and sales.

Surfin’ safari by the beach boys lyrics meaning – riding the waves of nostalgia and freedom.

Catching the Break: The Start of a Music Revolution

The camaraderie of the ‘safari’: more than just surfing, unbuttoning the hidden depths: the song’s subtext, iconic lyrics: ‘come on and safari with me’, riding the historical swell: the enduring legacy of ‘surfin’ safari’.

Early in the morning we’ll be startin’ out Some honeys will be bake in the scene I loaded up my Woody with our boards on top And I put on a faded blue jeans (’cause we are)

Come on (surfin’) baby wait and see (surfin’ safari) Yes I’m gonna (surfin’) take you surfin’ (surfin’ safari) with me Come along (surfin’) baby wait and see (surfin’ safari) Yes I’m gonna (surfin’) take you surfin’ (surfin’ safari) with me

Let’s go surfin’ now Everybody’s learning how Come on and safari with me (Come on and safari with)

At Huntington and Malibu They’re shooting the pier At Rincon they’re walking the nose We’re going on safari to the islands this year So if you’re coming get ready to go (we’re gonna go)

Well, surfin’ is big in Sunset-Beach They do it in South Africa too They all getting stoked on the surfin’ craves From Hawaii to the shores of Perus (go down let’s come)

Surfin’ safari

Full Lyrics

At the crest of the 1960s, a tidal wave of musical exuberance washed over the American landscape, carrying on its foamy peaks the sun-soaked harmonies of The Beach Boys. ‘Surfin’ Safari’ wasn’t just a song; it became an anthem for a generation looking to ride the waves of change. As a guiding light of the surf music genre, it encapsulated the zeitgeist of coastal freedom, youthful rebellion, and the pursuit of the American dream.

Diving beneath its catchy melody and upbeat tempo lies a cultural artefact that shaped and was shaped by the era’s shifting sand. It’s a timeless ode to the simple pleasures, a call to break from the mundane, and an invitation to embrace a life where the only compass needed is the direction of the ocean swells.

The year was 1962, the world was teetering on the brink of profound social and political change, and The Beach Boys were about to provide the soundtrack. ‘Surfin’ Safari’ catalyzed the surf culture, introducing it to the inlanders and major cities. Not only did it capture the essence of California living, but it also painted a picture of escapism and leisure that resonated across the globe.

The song’s deceptively simple structure belied its transformative power. Through ‘Surfin’ Safari,’ The Beach Boys were not just recounting their experiences; they were inviting an entire generation to cast away their worries and find a new rhythm in life.

Far beyond its literal call to the waves, ‘Surfin’ Safari’ was an allegory of togetherness. The repeated lines ‘Come on and safari with me’ weren’t only about joining a trip to the beach; they became a metaphor for communal experience, for shared moments amidst the sun and sea. The song united listeners under a banner of collective joy and the pursuit of shared passions.

The Beach Boys didn’t just observe a movement; they helped construct a community. The notion of ‘everybody’s learning how’ served as an equalizer – no matter who you were or where you came from, the waves were a democratizing force.

Like the ocean itself, ‘Surfin’ Safari’ had depths that many might not initially perceive. The safari symbolized an exodus from the structured norms into something more primal – a return to nature through the act of surfing. It was a retreat from industrialism and a plunge into a philosophical reconnection with the Earth.

Moreover, the song’s reference to surf spots around the world, from Malibu to Peru, hinted at the unifying power of surf culture. It was a song of boundary-breaking exploration, encouraging listeners to dissolve cultural and geographical divides.

The central line of ‘Surfin’ Safari,’ the recurring invitation to ‘Come on and safari with me,’ epitomized the spirit of inclusion and adventure. It pushed against the known, urging people to leave behind the familiar shore and embark on a journey led by the pursuit of pleasure and discovery.

It was a call to arms, or rather, a call to boards – a declaration that life was to be lived with the same verve and vivacity that one brings to the waves. In these memorable lyrics, The Beach Boys encapsulated the ethos of a burgeoning culture and a new way of living.

As the years have passed, ‘Surfin’ Safari’ remains a touchstone for nostalgia but also a tether to the indomitable spirit it fostered. Its enduring legacy is found in its continued celebration of freedom, its ability to evoke an era where a board and a beach were the only ingredients needed for happiness.

The song is a time capsule and a reminder that sometimes the most insightful messages are found in the simplest of pleasures. Through ‘Surfin’ Safari,’ The Beach Boys didn’t just capture the feeling of a generation; they provided a harmonious roadmap for any soul seeking the timeless allure of the surf.

The Beach Boys are an American rock band, formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. The group was initially composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Managed by the Wilsons' father Murry, the Beach Boys signed to Capitol Records in 1962. The band's early music gained popularity across the United States for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a Southern California youth culture of surfing, cars, and romance. By the mid 1960s, Brian Wilson's growing creative ambition and songwriting ability would dominate the group's musical direction. The primarily Wilson-composed Pet Sounds album and "Good Vibrations" single (both released in 1966) featured a complex, intricate and multi-layered sound that wa… more »

The Beach Boys’ Mike Love Looks Back on the Early Days: ‘Summer Was Forever Back Then’

M ike Love, 83, is a singer-songwriter and co-founder of the Beach Boys. Songs with his lyrics include “I Get Around,” “California Girls” and “Good Vibrations.” He appears in the new Disney+ documentary “The Beach Boys.” He spoke with Marc Myers.

The first time I sang three-part harmony it was 1957 and I was walking with my cousin Brian Wilson and my sister, Maureen. Brian and I were already singing along to doo-wop and Everly Brothers records at my house. Maureen played the harp.

But on this day, Brian showed us how to turn two-part harmony into three parts. Brian had been studying albums by pop vocal groups like the Four Freshmen, the Hi-Lo’s and the Four Preps. I liked those jazzy groups, too, but at the time I was more into R&B. Vocal groups like the Coasters and the Olympics were more exciting for me.

Music was a passion for our extended family. In our living room, we had a grand piano, an organ and a harp. We lived in the Baldwin Hills section of Los Angeles, in an area called Pill Hill because so many doctors had homes there. We had a beautiful, three-story Mediterranean-style villa with a view of Los Angeles, the mountains and the Pacific.

Even though our house had 14 rooms and five bathrooms, it filled up fast. I was the oldest of six children. Maureen was two years younger than me.

My dad, Milt, worked at Love Sheet Metal, a business his father had started in 1938. During the war, the company switched over to defense manufacturing and fabricated galleys for Navy ships. After the war, the focus was on suburban home development and the baby boom. As a result, we were comfortable.

My mom, Emily Glee, was a homemaker and loved to sing. She favored light opera and led sing-along parties at home. Her friends were part of what they called the Glee Club. She’d get us up in the morning for school by blasting opera records.

My dad was around a lot, but you didn’t want to annoy him. Mom was more about exposing us to art. In addition to music and singing, we all painted and were involved with photography.

Mom’s brother was Brian’s father, Murry Wilson. The Wilsons lived in Hawthorne, about 10 miles south of us. Our families didn’t always blend well. There was some envy on Murry’s part as he struggled to be a songwriter. He could be brusque and was hard on his kids—Brian, Dennis and Carl.

In high school, I was very shy and socially awkward. I was into art and nature and was a huge reader. My love of literature spilled into poetry and stuff that ordinary kids avoided. I also ran long distance, cross-country and track. Nobody ever beat me on the team because I was obsessed with doing my best.

I had everything I needed at home, but I wasn’t spoiled. I appreciated that my mother had come to California from Kansas by train during the Depression. The dust storms in Kansas had destroyed everything. There was no money, and food was scarce. I understood both of my parents’ sacrifices and hard work.

Despite my parents’ passion for music and the arts, there was little emotion. It was cultural, in a way. My mother’s father had been absent a lot, and her mother had birthed nine kids, so there was only so much attention to go around.

After high school in 1959, I enrolled at Los Angeles City College, but after two semesters, I left. I worked as a sheet metal apprentice at my father’s company and as a filling station attendant.

In 1961, I married my high-school sweetheart, Frannie, and moved out of the house. Soon after, our oldest daughter, Melinda, was born. Brian was at El Camino College and left around the same time I left LACC. There, he’d met a neighbor, Al Jardine, and was putting together a group.

We formed the Pendletones that fall. One day, Dennis and I went fishing together at Redondo Beach and talked about surfing. Dennis went back to the house and told Brian. I came over and co-wrote “Surfin’” with Brian in his garage music room. I wanted it to have a doo-wop sound.

In November, we went into the studio of Candix, an independent label, on Melrose Avenue and recorded the song. Russ Regan, a record distributor, convinced us to change our name to the Beach Boys. By December, “Surfin’” was a local hit, selling more than 40,000 copies. We signed with Capitol Records the following July.

Today, my wife, Jacquelyne, and I live in a house in Nevada that overlooks Lake Tahoe. I’ve known the lake all my life. My dad and I used to go fishing there. I bought the property in 1981 and didn’t develop it until 30 years ago. Jacquelyne designed the space.

When I think back on the Beach Boys’ early years, I miss Dennis and Carl, who passed. At home, I still have a blue Pendleton shirt that we wore on the cover of our first album, “Surfin’ Safari.” I often take it with me on tour. It reminds me of our start.

Mike’s ‘Excitations’

Documentary? Watching it, I felt as if summer was forever back then. Even when I was a kid, our families often went to the beach to make a bonfire.

Favorite home spot? My meditation studio. It overlooks Lake Tahoe and resembles a chapel.

Home splurge? I bought a Lyon & Healy harp at an estate sale. We have a rosewood Steinway grand piano and a Hammond organ in the living room. The harp finishes it off.

Beach Boys songs? If I’m kicking back, I’ll put on “Good Vibrations” or “The Warmth of the Sun.” I love them both.

The "Surfin' Safari" single backed with "409" was the band's second single and the first single to be released on the band's new label Capitol Records in the United States in June 1962. Originally Capitol Records felt "409" should be the 'A' Side, and first promoted the car song (according to Beach Boys biographers Badman, Gaines and Carlin) instead of "Surfin' Safari".
