City and River Seine Tour on Amphibious Bus

1.  City and River Seine Tour on Amphibious Bus

This unique river cruise in Paris includes some of the Paris favourites you see in the movies. You know, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame... so you can stop for an iconic picture and you'll also get a 60-minute cruise along the Seine thrown in. You'll also see more of the city’s famous bridges and other historical landmarks on the cruise, making for a fun-packed but truly relaxing day out.

Time Out tip: Since there's no food aboard the boat, we'd recommend dining at L'Escudella, an elegant bistro with a lunch menu starting from €36.

Night Aperitif Cruise on the Seine River with Music

2.  Night Aperitif Cruise on the Seine River with Music

Ah, the city of love. Sure, Paris is great during the day, but it’s at night when its real romantic side comes to the fore. This tour gets things off to a fairy-tale start with a lamp-lit river cruise, before moving on to a coach or minivan tour that stops by landmarks like the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe.

Time Out tip:  Enjoy a glass of champagne, wine or beer while aboard. Just make sure to cheers the French way.

Seine Cruise and Crepe Tasting near the Eiffel Tower

3.  Seine Cruise and Crepe Tasting near the Eiffel Tower

Some tours can leave you feeling a little bit deflated – you traipse around after someone with an umbrella for two hours and the schedule is so tight you don't actually get to take in your surroundings. Fortunately, this isn't the case on this Vedettes du Pont Neuf tour, where the only thing flat is the pancakes (or crepes, as they are known en français ). The two-hour cruise along the Seine and Canal St Martin passes landmarks including Notre-Dame, the Louvre, Assemblée Nationale and the Eiffel Tower, while three crepes and a drink (cider, mulled wine, hot chocolate or lemonade) are included in the price.

Time Out tip: The cruise is more frequent in summer (departing every 30 minutes), which comes in handy if you're visiting for the weekend.

Seine River Cruise and Champagne Brunch with Panoramic Views

4.  Seine River Cruise and Champagne Brunch with Panoramic Views

At this 90-minute Seine river ride courtesy of Capitaine Fracasse, you'll be treated to brunch while you cruise on, seeing sites like Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower. There are both hot and cold brunch options, so you can take your pick depending on how you're feeling that day, and you can even upgrade your package to enjoy a half-bottle of champagne if you're feeling fancy! Experience a super relaxed atmosphere in comfy armchairs as you take in the views.

Cruise on the Saint-Martin Canal and the Seine River

5.  Cruise on the Saint-Martin Canal and the Seine River

This tour doesn’t just take you meandering down the Seine, but also incorporates a journey up Paris’s idyllic, tree-lined Canal Saint Martin, with a guide sharing stories and facts along the way. Plus, there are some great stops on the way if you’re looking to inject some French style into your wardrobe.

Time Out tip: Can't decide on where to head next? This cruise offers you the perfect vantage point for your next destination. if in doubt, Cafe A is a good food stop - enjoy brunch out on the terrace.

Marne River Loop Day Cruise with Lunch on Board

6.  Marne River Loop Day Cruise with Lunch on Board

Seen the Seine? It's time to get off the beaten track and explore the outskirts of Paris via the River Marne instead. Marvel at Chinagora, a Chinese-inspired hotel complex, and stop for a spot of lunch on board – with 100% homemade recipes to try as you cruise around the outskirts of Paris.

Time Out tip: For this cruise, you're required to arrive 15 minutes before as the boat will leave at 10.25 am sharp.

Champagne at the Moulin Rouge and Seine River Cruise

7.  Champagne at the Moulin Rouge and Seine River Cruise

Sure, this is on the pricier end of tours on offer, but it will definitely be a night you remember. The evening starts with a Seine river cruise past some of Paris’s biggest sights by night as they’re lit up in all their illuminated glory. The final destination is the world-renowned Moulin Rouge, where you’ll get to enjoy one of its legendary Féerie shows as well as a glass of bubbly.

Time Out tip: Since this late evening cruise  (starting at 8.45 pm) is jamp-packed enough, we'd  recommend light activity during the day.

Sail yourself around

8.  Sail yourself around

Following a scheduled tour is fun and all, but nothing beats exploring for yourself. Marin d’Eau Douce allows you to do just that, taking to the open waters on your very own rental boat. Short hires are restricted to the Bassin de la Villette – Paris’ largest artificial lake – but opt for a longer session and you can explore the various canals that are connected to it. Boats fit five to 11 people and no sailing experience is required.

Time Out tip: Make it extra special and throw in an aperitif hamper for an extra €7 per person.

What You Can Expect When You Dine on the Seine

What You Can Expect When You Dine on the Seine

We've observed that the French consider good food essential to their culture. And so, on a Seine River dinner cruise, you can expect a fabulous multi-course meal with champagne & wine. Although the menus change with the seasons here's an idea of the type of menu you are likely to find on one of these dinner cruise along the city's beautiful river. All cruises offer vegetarian menus as well.

Entrée (first course)

• Marinated Scottish salmon over baby greens, or • Foie gras with truffle shavings, or • Chilled prawns, herb vinaigrette & baby vegetables, or • Lobster chaud-froid cream sauce & a vegetable melange

Plat (main course)

• Beef filet with morel mushroom cream sauce & fresh pasta, or • Duck breast with fig sauce & baby potatoes, or • Grilled Veal with pomegranate sauce, chanterelles & rice pilaf, or • Sea bass filet with grilled zucchini, olives & basil

• Chocolate entremets — classic chocolate dessert selection, or • Raspberry schuss — a vanilla and raspberry cake, or • Raspberry macaron , or • Vanilla and strawberry vacherin — a meringue-filled with cream and fruit

In France, it's common to have an aperitif before dinner. Popular choices include kir ( creme de cassis & white wine), a glass of champagne, or even a glass of fruit juice — we prefer a glass of rosé champagne. With the meal, wine is always the right choice! There will be a sommelier on board who can help with your selection.

It's also common in France to pay a little extra (called a supplement ) for some of the special items on a menu. This might mean a supplement is added for the cheese course, or if you select higher priced-items like lobster or foie gras. In general, the standard (lowest) price is offered on the menu and the high rollers can tailor their menu with extra supplements. And of course, vegetarian options are almost always available.

What to Wear on a Paris Dinner Cruise

What to Wear on a Paris Dinner Cruise

The dress code for the cruise is smart casual , meaning a blazer for men and elegant attire for women. It may sound obvious, but sportswear — including running shoes, baseball caps, flip-flops, crop-tops — are interdit (not allowed). This is a night to dress up! Here's your chance to wear your best dress, your best suit, your coolest shows, to be your best. It's a time to celebrate your evening in Paris in style.

Founder Jean Bruel began Bateaux Mouches in 1949 with a single steamboat salvaged from the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 . His novel idea was to offer guided tours on the Seine River. Today, the cruise company has a fleet of fifteen boats that host more than two million Parisians and travelers each year, making Bateaux Mouches the fourth-most-visited attraction in Paris, after the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum and the Pompidou Centre.

All the boats feature open-air top decks and all dining tables are next to windows, providing amazing views of the Seine. A team of professional chefs prepare the dishes on board with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The Bateaux Mouches dock is found near Pont de l'Alma on Port de la Conférence.

3. Le Diamant Bleu – Build It And They Will Come

Designed by restaurateur Alain Daien, whose dream was to build a yacht that could accommodate dinner cruises on the Seine, Le Diamant Bleu launched in 2015 — an innovative, modern high-tech concept by launching jewel, with two levels, including an expansive rooftop deck. Le Diamant Bleu offers comfort, clean lines, and panoramic windows for exceptional views. Board Le Diamant Bleu at 36 Quai d'Austerlitz in the 13th, under Cité de la Mode's green facade.

Planning a Romantic Boat Ride in Paris

So far, you’ve definitely picked your favorite barge ride. Now it’s time to plan a beautiful, romantic boat ride. I’ve shared some fantastic tips to make your romantic cruise even more memorable.

Let’s check out them below:

Choosing the Right Boat

When selecting the ideal cruise for your journey, whether a private boat or a smaller barge cruise , prioritizing intimacy is the ultimate key. Hence, opting for boats featuring open-air decks not only enhances the view but also elevates the overall ambiance.

It’s also important to seek out vessels equipped with romantic lighting and comfortable seating arrangements to enhance the experience further.

Additionally, exploring themed cruises tailored to your interests, such as wine tastings or jazz nights, can add an extra layer of enjoyment.

Making Reservations

There are some great tips for you while making reservations for your lovely boat ride tour. Here you go:

  • Book your boat ride well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons [June-August].
  • Specify any special requests or preferences, such as preferred seating or dietary restrictions.
  • Double-check the reservation details, including the date, time, and meeting point, to avoid any last-minute confusion.
  • Consider booking through reputable online platforms or directly with the boat company for added convenience and reliability.
  • Confirm the cancellation policy and inquire about any flexibility in case of unforeseen circumstances.

How Much is a Boat Ride in Paris

The price of your boat ride depends on the type of cruise you choose and your preferred amenities. I’ve outlined the price range for different types of cruises.

They are as follows:

Dinner Cruises

Prices for dinner cruises can range from $50 to $350 per person , depending on the cruise provider, duration, and dining options. Some luxury dinner cruises may offer exclusive dining experiences. On that note, you might even need to spend more.

Evening Sightseeing Cruises

Evening sightseeing cruises are generally more affordable, with prices typically ranging from $50 to $100 per person. These cruises offer a great chance to admire Paris landmarks and monuments and, of course, see the city of light.

Private Boat Rentals

Private boat rentals can range from around $100 to $500 per hour or more. This depends on factors like the size of the boat, the services you want onboard (like catering or live music), and how long you’ll be renting it for.

Just keep in mind, that there might be extra costs like fuel charges, docking fees, and tips for the crew. Plus, it’s a good idea to ask about these beforehand.

Dressing for the Occasion

Another very important matter is dressing appropriately for the occasion. Since you’re planning a romantic moment with your partner, in this case, you can wear elegant and stylish attire.

Personally, I think semi-formal or cocktail attire would be suitable for the boat trip.

Recommendations for Gourmet Dinner and Drinks

Dining and drinks are best enjoyed with your partner. Start with champagne and strawberries or a gourmet picnic with artisanal cheeses and fresh fruits.

Afterward, explore French cuisine with catered coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon paired with fine wines.

For dessert, you can try macarons or chocolate mousse while watching the sunset. Bon appétit!

Most Romantic Paris Proposal Ever (on a Private Yacht)

Find out how Jay secretly pulled off one of the most mind-blowing Eiffel Tower proposals ever.

Watch the most romantic Paris boat proposal of all time.

Location : The Seine River, Paris, with jaw-dropping Eiffel Tower views Setting : Private Seine River Cruise (Paris boat proposal) Season : summer Time of Day : Daytime Package : proposal planning, private Seine River yacht rental, floral design & decor, photography, videography, master violinist, Cinderella horse-drawn carriage, and surprise decoration of their hotel suite. Proposal Cost : $$$ Concept: Luxury scavenger hunt marriage proposal culminating with a romantic engagement on the ship deck of a luxurious private Seine River Private boat; Hotel suite surprise decoration; horse-drawn Cinderella carriage; and much more.

Do I need a planner for a Paris boat proposal?

Let’s keep this simple: hiring an experienced event planner for your Paris boat proposal is required when you work with us. Pulling off this particular surprise engagement (on a Seine River vessel) without your partner catching wind takes true expertise and exceptional communication between the boat, the couple, and the vendors.

How much does it cost to do a romantic Paris boat proposal?

We can’t give you a one-size-fits-all quote since every custom proposal is different; the cost of your package depends on multiple elements, notably:

  • Whether you opt for a daytime (lunch) vs. evening (dinner) cruise;
  • Additional proposal services (e.g., photographer, videographer or video reel, floral design, master musician, red carpet, Marry Me Letters set-up, etc.);
  • Proposal planning fee.

Why propose in Paris?

Travel is an integral part of who we are as a couple. For the first years of our relationship, we’d commute 4 hours to see each other. We quickly became accustomed to planes, trains, cars, and whatever would bring us closer together.

Pri is an explorer who grew up journeying the world with her parents. She loves immersing herself in new cultures, absorbing everything like a sponge.

On the other hand, I spent most of my life in New Jersey. Ha, the rest of the world was a black hole to me. I had always preferred to stay within my comfort zone and rarely ventured too far from my everyday routine.

That’s at least until Pri entered my life: an adorable bundle of energy, her enthusiasm for the  unexplored  is contagious.

Many folks told us we were too different to make things work. However, Pri gently encouraged me to push my boundaries which has helped me grow.

I opted for a destination engagement in Paris to show Pri how much she’s changed my life—my ideologies, passions, and who I am. I wanted her to know that I so much look forward to tackling the unknown with her forever.

The City of Love was an easy choice—who wouldn’t want a romantic Paris proposal?

But for us, Paris represents more than that: it’s the first spot we traveled to on our own and will always harbor a special place in our hearts.

The other important reason I went with a destination proposal in Paris was to unwind from daily stress and thoroughly experience this life-changing moment free from distractions and routine.

Why did you hire a proposal planner? Why Chantelle-Marie from Kiss Me in Paris?

I did not anticipate hiring a Paris proposal planner . Ha, I am an obsessive planner and initially thought I could handle things independently.

Boy, was I wrong! Suppose you, too, want a romantic Paris proposal. Then, I’d recommend investing in a local event planner—even when your proposal ideas are not as complex as mine.

Planning a destination engagement across time zones and languages is not for the faint of heart. The devil is in the detail, where even a minor hiccup can turn your dream engagement upside down.

It may sound cliché, but there are no do-overs regarding a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

A professional Paris proposal planner will take any worries off your plate. You’re already spending significant resources on her ring, travel, and engagement. Consider hiring an event planner as defacto insurance in soothing peace of mind.

To that point (while I don’t recommend it), you might well be able to negotiate with all requisite vendors on your own. But ensuring they coordinate with each other and show up at the exact time is no easy task.

Plus, you’ll already be nervous with so much on your mind. The last thing to worry about is micromanaging local Parisian artists on one of the most important days of your life.

Instead, you’ll want to rest easy knowing that every detail is taken care of. As such, you can focus on the only thing that matters—showing your partner 100 percent undivided attention and love.

Pri and I were traveling to Paris under the pretext of an anniversary trip . I thoroughly enjoyed our vacation leading up to the proposal because I knew everything would be professionally managed.

I remember exactly where I was when Chantelle and I first FaceTimed —in a busy airport restaurant, waiting for my flight to take off. Honestly, I was still uncertain whether I needed a Paris proposal planner.

I recall how much energy Chantelle brought to the call. It was immediately apparent she’s super-passionate about helping her clients! And looking back, Chantelle maintained her enthusiasm throughout every stage of my engagement—from coming up with uniquely romantic Paris proposal ideas through ‘day-of’ execution.

She was always cheerful with a can-do attitude—which is remarkable considering my highly ambitious Paris proposal ideas.

I felt confident about Chantelle because she never tried to sell herself during our initial consultation. Instead, she came across as a dependable partner who cared deeply about realizing a romantic Parisian engagement for me.

For instance, even before officially booking Kiss Me in Paris, I mentioned how challenging it was to find a suitable hotel. Everything was either sold out or just too expensive.

Chantelle suggested a 700 sq. ft (total white decoration) terrace suite with magnificent views of the Arc de Triomphe.

Believe it or not, I immediately booked the suite on the spot while we were still on the phone. Recall that I had not even hired Chantelle. Yet, she already helped me big time; it was instantly clear she was naturally helpful and the perfect fit for me.

I can’t help but smile when I reflect on all the emails and FaceTime we exchanged. I must have come across as pseudo-neurotic with my elaborate Paris proposal ideas; I demanded nothing short of the world of Chantelle.

I refused to back down on any detail. Chantelle worked tirelessly to make my vision a reality. Not sure how she did it, but she was somehow available day and night; the time zone difference never seemed to matter. She was always there for me when I needed her.

For instance, the day before our marriage proposal, I realized I forgot to pack the blindfold I’d use when we entered our decorated hotel suite as fiancés. While I hadn’t paid Chantelle for concierge services, she went shopping that night to find the perfect blindfold.

Likewise, as chance would have it, Pri’s hair straightener broke on the day of our engagement. Pri was a little distressed since she wanted her hair to look amazing for our private yacht dinner cruise. Again, Chantelle came to the rescue, making her way to our hotel to offer her hair straightener!

I can list a million additional little ways Chantelle made my life easier. However, you only need to check out our proposal video and photos. My proposal was as much hers as it was mine. There’s simply no possible way I could have pulled off even 1/10th without her!

Most importantly, without Chantelle and the Kiss Me in Paris team, I don’t think I would have so utterly immersed myself in the moment. No distractions. No worries. Just endless excitement and butterflies.

So many little details could have gone wrong in what amounted to a 24-hour romantic Paris proposal adventure. However, nothing did! Every vendor executed their part to perfection. We took pictures and videos at our favorite spots around Paris . Our vendors arrived early and stayed longer than commissioned, so we never felt rushed or on the clock .

We’d be delighted to customize a romantic Paris proposal package for you.

How did you come up with romantic paris proposal ideas that are unique and unforgettable.

The story of my dream proposal had been writing itself since the first time I met Pri. Deep in my heart, I instantly knew she was the one. It just brings me great joy to see her happy. I love coming up with little surprises … and our marriage proposal would have to be the ultimate surprise.

In the end, it was always going to be a princess-themed engagement. Ha, Pri’s family affectionately calls her  Princess , and she’s royalty to me! Her regal spending habits aside, she’s a big Disney fan …. so I had to find a way to incorporate some Disney movie magic into our marriage proposal.

My sister initially helped me develop fabulous romantic proposal themes. We came up with the following:

  • a “Be My Guest” Royal French dinner à la  Beauty and the Beast ;
  • a Royal Garden tea party ( Alice in Wonderland ); and
  • A carriage ride, a glass slipper, a princess photo shoot, and a royal suite to pay homage to  Cinderella .
Proposing in Paris was an easy decision. During our first joint trip to the City of Lights, one of Pri’s favorite memories was our Seine River dinner cruise, where we got to see the sparkling Eiffel Tower up-close.

Next, it was time to put some flesh on the bones of my initial proposal ideas to ensure they actually worked in Paris. Chantelle and the Kiss Me in Paris Team were seriously from heaven-sent, considering their deep local knowledge and expertise.

Together, we decided on the most suitable places in Paris, prioritizing experience-enhancing settings that would photograph well.

The goal was to create the most unforgettable day for Pri instead of a single event. The question was how to harmoniously string together a series of mini-experiences that would crescendo with me asking Pri to become my wife in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Well, note to you: the little things that make a big difference can render your marriage proposal even more magical. For instance, Chantelle came up with elegant hand-written (calligraphy) ‘Be my Guest’ cards that gently nudged us from one experience to the next.

Chantelle suggested a blindfold, a violinist, and other memorable Paris proposal ideas, such as a personalized love lock. She even hired a local artisan to create our stunning Forever Rose (Beauty and the Beast).

Impossible is nothing. With that in mind, we worked passionately as a team, and the result exceeded my lofty expectations.

What were the biggest challenges in pulling off this fairytale engagement?

Let me come right out and say that pulling off a romantic Paris proposal as elaborate as mine is nearly impossible without an experienced and well-connected local Parisian event planner.

Well, how do you get a vendor team (florist, violinist, photographer, and videographer ) to access a private river cruise after you board with your partner without ruining the surprise?

Discretely getting vendors aboard is only the first logistical challenge. Then, your floral designer has 30 minutes to transform the ship’s deck into a breathtaking setting worthy of an epic engagement. Finally, your violinist, photographer , and videographer must precisely coordinate their positioning for optimal visual results.

As mentioned, our engagement in Paris spanned an entire day, starting with a sunrise couple photoshoot at Trocadero , one of the most iconic Eiffel Tower locations.

Pri expected me to propose right there and then. However, that’s not really what happened. Sure, I eventually dropped to my knee as if I would pop the question. Yet, sticking with the Cinderella theme, I offered my Princess a glam pair of Louboutins rather than a ring.

The challenge related to the sunrise shoot was more about maintaining natural flow and keeping the space free from other couple shoots, given that Trocadero is a public setting. We had limited time coordinating multiple vendors, the light-hearted Louboutin fakeout proposal, and a portrait session with five oversized balloons.

Note to other couples: Paris is a busy city, so don’t simply expect every popular backdrop to be blissfully free of distractions. That will not happen. I recommend hiring an associate to help with crowds. Said associate might also double as a handy resource to carry your belongings and keep your precious items safe from theft.

Other challenges related to my Parisian engagement included:

  • getting her engagement ring through airport security and keeping it safely hidden;
  • coordinating different outfits for our morning and evening photoshoots, as well as the River Seine yacht proposal;
  • preparing the perfect marriage proposal speech;
  • embellishing our hotel suite worthy of the occasion;
  • Enabling our photographer and videographer to catch up with us on the move—notably during the horse & carriage ride.

Would you recommend a photographer and a videographer?

I discovered Cengiz online and immediately fell in love with his photos—especially the so-called Blue-Hour pictures taken at the Louvre around sunset.

His professionalism and commitment to my vision were even more important than his skill as a photographer. Cengiz was so excited about my proposal. He isn’t merely a Paris photographer but a soundboard and friend. Cengiz committed so much time to help me refine the timeline with optimal lighting and visuals in mind.

Not once did Cengiz tell me something was impossible. He arrived earlier than commissioned. He stayed later. He enlisted a team to assist with crowd control, watch over our belongings, and assist with lighting.

His energy is contagious. Pri and I are not models and, accordingly, not particularly comfortable in front of the camera. Cengiz gave us clear directions, which kept the flow natural and fun. He’s exceptionally good at crowd control, which can make a big difference in a busy city.

We never felt intruded upon during personal moments. Cengiz did not distract from the passion and emotion of the moment; if anything, he enhanced it!

I was unsure whether we needed a professional filmmaker. Ultimately, my family convinced me to hire one. Looking back, I am so thrilled we had a cinematographer on board. Videography is compelling and tells the same story differently than photos.

Tuan, our Paris videographer, did a fantastic job seamlessly weaving the many elements of our engagement into a single film. Tuan turned around the edited trailer so quickly compared with what we are accustomed to in the United States.

With the benefit of hindsight, I implore you to invest in a talented English-speaking photographer and videographer. I understand that destination engagements are expensive, and we often exceed our initial budget expectations. But your engagement is not the time or place to hold back.

Sure, you could save a little here or there, but is it worth hiring artists who may negatively affect your experience? And would you not regret it if the documentation of your marriage proposal does not reflect how you remember it?

Hear from Jay’s fiancée what she loved most about his romantic Paris proposal.

The first call was to my parents and sister, who are so competitive that I had to ring them simultaneously! They knew in advance that Jay would propose and were dying to hear every last detail. Jay’s proposal was so perfect that my mom, sister, and I took turns crying.

I could not have imagined something so personalized and romantic in my wildest dreams—it was like straight out of the movies!

In the months leading up to our Paris trip, Jay made every effort to kill any inkling of hope I might have had that he would propose to me. When we booked our tickets, he repeatedly told me, “I’ll not propose Pri, so don’t get your hopes up high.”

I was miffed but believed Jay because he’s a terrible liar. Family is vital to me, so I knew Jay would never propose without asking for permission. And my family cannot keep a secret if their lives depend on it.

I figured I’d get them to spill the beans if they knew of an imminent marriage proposal. As much as I poked, prodded, and interrogated, my family made me believe that Jay had never asked them for my hand in marriage.

What’s more, Jay waited until the final day of our trip to propose. So, our vacation’s first six ‘proposal-less’ days convinced me it wouldn’t happen in Paris.

Our sunrise photo shoot was a lot of fun. The Louboutins were a red herring , so I suspected nothing going into our private yacht dinner.

After concluding dinner, we walked upstairs onto the vessel’s deck. I saw the beautiful decorations, uncountable rose petals, and the fabulous forever rose. I was surprised to see Cengiz (again) taking pictures. Yet, somehow, it still did not cross my mind that Jay was about to pop the question.

I cannot say enough good things about Tuan and Cengiz. Both are incredibly talented at their craft, and I can’t recommend them highly enough. Cengiz was fantastic at putting us at ease and making us feel gorgeous like models. I must admit I was slightly self-conscious at first. Still, I quickly became comfortable before the lens, forgetting we were even being photographed.

During the proposal, Cengiz and Tuan navigated the limited space of the yacht with ease and grace not to distract us. As such, I was focused on the love of my life kneeling before me.

The mouthwatering dinner on the yacht was nothing short of perfection. I’d recommend the experience to any couple who values a memorable evening in Paris. An intimate cruise along the Seine is just such a romantic and relaxing way to enjoy the beauty of the City of Lights.

9 most romantic river cruises

by Emma Smith - 06/02/2018

Sun setting over Ha Long Bay - a popular destination for Mekong river cruises

From historic architecture to riverside parks, the waterways of the world are home to some of the most romantic destinations to enjoy as a couple. Sail along the Rhine for storybook scenery where or stop in Shanghai for a modern-day romance.

With Valentine’s Day coming soon, here are nine of our favourite destinations along some of the world’s most beautiful rivers, perfect for couple’s holidays.

1. Budapest

Danube river passing through Budapest at dusk

The Danube visits numerous cities on its journey to the Black Sea, but one that stands out as a romantic favourite is Budapest. Its illuminated waters mark it as one of the most beautiful riverbanks to visit.

This capital city is home to history and sights that are sure to inspire l’amour. Climb the Fisherman’s Bastion for incredible views of the cityscape before uncovering historic secrets within the cobblestone streets that weave around the Buda Castle District. If you are feeling indulgent, why not visit Budapest’s iconic thermal Széchenyi Bath, home to nearly 20 indoor and outdoor pools?

2. Rothenburg

Alleyway in Rotheburg

Experience this medieval town in all its beauty as you sail along the Rhine. Rothenburg ob de Tauber is a worldwide symbol of German romance, with an unmistakable skyline and unspoiled countryside that has inspired artists for centuries – a stunning location to visit with your loved one.

A trip here with your other half will add a magical flair to your couples’ cruise along the Rhine, from seeing the town brought to life with evening fireworks and torch-lit processions during the Imperial City Festival, to gazing at the intricate architecture of the timbered buildings and turrets.

3. Siem Reap

Sun setting in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Whether you watch the sunset behind the temples at Angkor, take a leisurely cycle through the archaeological park, or ride horseback through the Cambodian countryside, a river cruise along the Mekong is the very definition of romance.

Enjoy basking in the spiritual atmosphere of Siem Reap, hand-in-hand, as you trek through the Cambodian jungle before reaching the awe-inspiring temples that make this place a top romantic destination for river cruisers. Away from the temples, explore the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary or see authentic life at Kampong Phluk, where locals live in a fishing village on stilts around Tonle Sap Lake.

Sun setting behind the Eiffel Tower - a famous landmark of France and the Seine River

A renowned destination for romance, sailing through Paris on a Seine river cruise is perfect for two. Enjoy being wined and dined in a city of outstanding culinary heritage, where even the nation’s dishes are protected on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list .

During the warmer months, walk between the sculpted trees and criss-crossing pathways of Jardin de Tuileries, as you spot the popular Eiffel Tower over the rooftops. Paris also is ideal for admiring art, from established works by Picasso or Monet on display at the Louvre, to the vast impressionist collection at Musée d’Orsay and the contemporary pieces at the Centre Pompidou – perfect for inspiration.

Colourful houses lining the canals of Venice

Stand on the Ponte di Rialto bridge and share a scoop of gelato as you admire the Grand Canal of Venice and watch gondolas pass beneath your feet. Or, take a gondola ride to one of Italy’s most romantic places, the Bridge of Sighs – where many sneak a kiss to declare their love for one another.

Though not directly found on the riverbanks, Venice is often included as an excursion for passengers on river cruises along the Po. Why not venture into the city during the evening and walk along the southern shore of the main Venetian island – with the sun setting and riverside light illuminating an ideal romantic atmosphere.

Romantic buildings in Bruges, beside the river banks

For a stroll through a fairy-tale town, Bruges offers a world of picturesque cobbled streets and dreamy canals just waiting for be discovered. This medieval city centre is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historic and charming streets leading to characteristic buildings and landmarks.

River cruises along the Dutch Waterways allow you to explore this postcard-perfect port in all of its glory, starting with a stroll over the Minnewater Bridge. Some say that if you walk over the bridge and kiss your loved one, it will become an eternal love.

Don’t miss Bonifacius Bridge, too, where you can enjoy one of the most stunning parts of Bruges nestled between two city highlights: Gruuthuse palace and the Arents Courtyard.

Sun setting over Halong Bay - a popular destination for Mekong river cruises

Wander through Vietnam’s heart and soul in the cultural capital city of Hanoi. Mekong river cruises port here for the unique sights and gourmet wonders, but there is so much more to this city. Enjoy a romantic cycle through the countryside and the ancient village of Duong Lam, or go hiking at the Ba Vi National Park where you can wander between the temples and pagodas.

Experience the UNESCO-listed Halong Bay either from the sky or sea – with options to set sail past the incredible islands and limestone pillars or swoop around the bay in a Cassna Grand Caravan sea plane. You can even end your day with a couple’s spa treatment in the city of Hanoi – the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploration.

Colourful houses of Porto, lined up on the riverbanks of the Douro

The pastel-coloured homes of Porto are perfect for romantic evenings spent in the harbour and enchanting days spent sightseeing.

Begin your morning with a steaming mug of coffee along the Rua das Flores, Portugal’s Flower Street, which is beautifully decorated with flowers, drawings and phrases in their own individual style. Next, explore Porto’s steep streets on one of the city’s historic trams before ending the day in the depths of the famous Port wine cellars where you can sample this local tipple in its homeland.

9. Shanghai

Purple and pink sunset over the skyscrapers of Shanghai - a destination on most Yangtze river cruises

Bright lights, neon signs and skyscrapers; Shanghai doesn’t seem like your typical couple’s river cruise destination. However, visit during a Yangtze river cruise and you will see the city in a whole new light.

Take an alternative view of Shanghai and enjoy an evening cruise along the city’s waterways, illuminated by riverside lanterns. There is even a lane dedicated to lovers in the Hongkou district of Shanghai. Tianai Lu, or ‘Sweet Love Road’, is located besides the Lu Xun Park where you can stroll by walls adorned with poems, hand-written notes and declarations of love.

Whether you want to admire fairy-tale architecture or embark on an exciting adventure together, a river cruise is a perfect choice for a romantic getaway. Explore Europe’s intriguing cities and idyllic countryside or experience the wild and wonderful landscapes of Asia and its winding rivers.

Call our Cruise Concierge team on 0800 197 0854 for award-winning advice and assistance with your booking along one of these beautiful rivers.

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much stricter in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

The riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. , no other vaccinations are currently required for travel to the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia or Hungary. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country , please contact an embassy or consulate of the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia or Hungary. to determine what additional vaccinations are required for your travel.

While a river cruise from is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our excursions, often along the cobblestone streets on the hills along the rivers; for the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Sun, Diamond, Ruby and Emerald. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and the Dining room, which includes stops at the Lounge and the Ruby Deck. There is no elevator access to the Sun Deck or Emerald Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor on board the riverboat. In case of emergency we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is always advisable. A light jacket or sweater for the sun deck is also recommended. Pack comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in, as many of the sites visited were built centuries ago and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual. Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men.  For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable. For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers.  Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested. (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each riverboat cabin.

Valet laundry service is available on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities are available by request to the front desk. Category 7 suites feature their own irons and ironing boards.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

We recommend you pack the following items for your cruise:

  • Flat, rubber-soled walking shoes for on board
  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in for onshore
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • A Sport jacket (optional tie) for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm fuctions (many hotels don't have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

The climate along the Moselle, Rhine, Main and the Danube rivers is temperate and unpredictable. From June through August, the average high temperatures increase as you travel south along the river and range from 68 to 78°F (20 to 26°C) and the average low temperatures range from 50 to 59°F (10 to 15°C). Rainfall amounts in this region remain fairly constant throughout the year, although late spring and early summer are generally the wettest seasons of the year. Opposite of temperature, rainfall decreases as you travel south.

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Jun 7, 2024 • 8 min read

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise.

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

10 Best Cruises to Hawaii — From Luxury Sailings to Expedition Ships

A cruise around the 50th state is an excellent way to see as much of the islands as possible in a limited amount of time.

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the 50th state's "Aloha" spirit. Each island offers a different climate, landscape, and style, and even on the same island, there are significant variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kailua-Kona region on the west coast tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is a great way to accomplish that, according to Pam Jacobs , travel advisor at Travel Store in Palos Verdes Estates, California. “People love the inter-island cruises because all meals are included, so it’s an economical as well as convenient way to see the islands. You unpack once and avoid getting in and out of airports and checking in and out of hotels. It’s the best way to island hop.”

Families and travelers with limited time enjoy the seven-day Norwegian Cruise Lines Honolulu to Honolulu round trip cruises, while retirees may opt for a longer cruise from the West Coast with more days at sea. You can embark from several ports on the West Coast, including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle. “Many Hawaiʻi cruises are part of longer voyages to the South Pacific, Australia, or around the world,” says Jacobs, a cruise and train travel specialist.

“The shore excursions on the cruises are the same things a tourist would do on land — go to a luau, play golf, visit an attraction like the Arizona Memorial, or just relax on the beach — and it’s all arranged for you,” according to Jacobs. One more bit of advice from our cruise expert: “Always arrive a day before your cruise to be sure you’re there and ready. You’ll have time to explore and relax before boarding.”

Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaiʻi . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so choosing a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, so hopefully this list will inspire you to get started.

Holland America: 17-day Circle Hawaii - Round Trip from San Diego

Courtesy of Holland America

This cruise on the 1,432-passenger Zaandam departs from San Diego and spends five days at sea before arriving in Honolulu at 8 a.m. Optional activities include a trip to Pearl Harbor, a hike on Diamond Head, a road trip around Oahu, an evening at the Polynesian Cultural Center, and a day on Waikiki Beach. After an overnight sail to Kauai, the ship docks at Nawiliwili Harbor. Guests can take a Wailua River cruise to the Fern Grotto , a tour of a coffee plantation, or a trip to Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Maui is the next island on the itinerary, and guests can choose a drive to Haleakala Crater , a snorkel adventure aboard the new Reef Explorer, or a drive to Maui’s Upcountry or rainforest. The final two stops, Hilo and Kona, are on the Big Island. In Kona, there’s an optional Atlantis submarine trip to explore coral gardens or a catamaran cruise. Options include visits to Volcanoes National Park and in Hilo, guests can tour Rainbow Falls or go for a zipline adventure. After four days at sea, you'll stop in Ensenada, Mexico, before returning to San Diego.

Royal Caribbean: 9-night Hawaii Cruise - Vancouver to Oahu

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean Cruises

This trip aboard the 4,180-passenger Ovation of the Seas offers guests much to do during days at sea, with a rock climbing wall, FlowRider surf simulator, and Northstar, a 360-degree observation capsule 300 feet above sea level. “For travelers who have the time for these days at sea, the activities on the ship are a big part of the fun,” according to Jacobs. After departing Vancouver , British Columbia, the ship spends four days at sea before it arrives in Honolulu for a day of exploring Oʻahu with a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center or Waikiki Beach. The ship crosses the International Date Line with a day at sea and then passes the beautiful Napali Coast of Kauai, famous for its dramatic cliffs rising from the ocean. The final stop is Oahu, and passengers spend as much time as they want exploring Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, or the rest of the island before heading home.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 7-Day Hawaii Inter-Island Cruise from Honolulu

Courtesy of Norwegian Cruises

Spend a week exploring four of Hawaii's islands on this cruise aboard the 2,186-passenger Pride of America , the only ship sailing to four Hawaiian islands in seven days year-round. “These Norwegian Cruise Line trips are a dependable way to see the islands with their convenient weekly departures,” Jacobs says. “You can see the other islands and spend some time in Oahu before or after your cruise.” Onboard activities include basketball, volleyball, video games, theater, hot tubs, spa, and shopping. Departing Honolulu on Saturday evening, the ship heads to Kahului, Maui for two days with options like a drive on the Road to Hana, a catamaran cruise to Molokini for snorkeling with sea turtles, a tour to Haleakala Crater, and more. Next is a day in Hilo on the Big Island, where guests can see a volcano, rain forest, waterfalls, or a lush botanical garden. On the other side of the island in Kona, snorkeling, fishing, cruising in a catamaran, and a reef tour are among optional activities. On Kauai , passengers can enjoy a traditional luau, hike through a rainforest, go kayaking, or take in Waimea Canyon . The cruise ends the following Saturday back in Honolulu, where passengers can explore the city, nearby Pearl Harbor , or Oahu's North Shore.

UnCruise Adventures: Hawaiian Seascapes

Courtesy of UnCruise

“The UnCruise expedition-style cruises focus on the destinations rather than the ship,” according to Pam Jacobs. “The experience is immersive, eco-friendly, and there’s always great camaraderie with the small groups.” This seven-night cruise aboard the 36-guest Safari Explorer begins in Kona, on the Big Island, with a champagne welcome from the captain. The following two days feature a hike up the slopes of Hualalai with a naturalist guide, night snorkeling among Giant Pacific Manta rays, and plenty of opportunities for swimming or kayaking. On day four in Maui, guests can stroll through historic Lahaina, snorkel among coral and sea turtles, or kayak in a marine sanctuary. Lanai is the next island, where guests can paddleboard or kayak past 1,000-foot-high sea cliffs, go snorkeling, take a bike excursion, or visit the quaint Lanai Culture and Heritage Center. On Molokai, guests can learn how taro is cultivated and turned into poi , or they can hike to a spectacular waterfall in Halawa Valley . At the Molokai Museum, a lesson on the island's history is followed by a pa'ina (feast), complete with traditional music. Passengers disembark the following day at Kaunakakai , where they can either transfer to Molokai Airport or extend their stay.

Princess Cruises: 16-day Hawaiian Islands - Round Trip from San Francisco

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

This cruise aboard the 3,080-passenger Ruby Princess departs San Francisco in the late afternoon. Swimming pools, hot tubs, miniature golf, Discovery at Sea programs, movies, dancing, and shows ensure plenty to do during the four days at sea on the way to Hawaii. Shipboard programs for youths, teens, and families provide something for everyone. On the Big Island, guests can zipline through the rainforest or visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park . Next is Oahu, where activities include a tour of Pearl Harbor, snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, and a tour of the only royal palace in the United States . On Kauai, there are hiking , snorkeling, and kayaking adventures. On Maui, guests can sail on a catamaran, Zodiac, or submarine. After four days at sea, passengers have a day to explore Ensenada, Mexico , on the Baja California peninsula, before the Ruby Princess sails back to San Francisco.

Celebrity Cruises: 13-night Hawaii Cruise - Vancouver to Oahu

Steve Dunlop/Celebrity Cruises

This cruise on the luxurious, 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge departs Vancouver and stops for the day in historic Astoria, Oregon, before continuing onto Hawaii. During the six days at sea, passengers can play blackjack in the casino, take a yoga class in the fitness center, or enjoy cocktails while hovering over the ocean on the Magic Carpet . In Hilo, on day eight, guests can explore waterfalls, volcanoes, wineries, and gardens on the lush coast of the Big Island. The ship cruises to Kona on the other side of the island for another two days of snorkeling or other onshore activities and then spends a day passing the Napali Coast of Kauai, where steep cliffs rise from the ocean and sea caves and waterfalls can be seen from the ship. After another day of cruising, the final stop is Honolulu, where guests are free to enjoy Oahu at their leisure before heading back to the mainland.

Disney Cruise Line: 10-night Hawaiian Cruise from Vancouver Ending in Honolulu

David Murphey/Disney Cruises

With an itinerary that includes both Maui and Mickey, this cruise aboard the 875-stateroom Disney Wonder is perfect for families and Disney lovers alike. Departing from Vancouver, you’ll spend the next six nights at sea, with entertainment ranging from Broadway-style musicals with Disney characters to a Marvel-themed superhero academy in the Oceaneer Club for kids. The first stop is Nawiliwili on the island of Kauaʻi, where guests can visit Waimea Canyon State Park, called “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” or explore a restored sugar plantation in Old Koloa Town. The next stop is Kahului, Maui, where you can spend a day at the beach, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, or Botanical Gardens. In Hilo on the “Big Island” of Hawaiʻi,” guests can tour Mauna Kea Observatory or see active volcanoes at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park . The ship arrives in Honolulu for disembarkation, and passengers can transfer to the airport or extend their stay.

Viking Cruises: Hawaiian Islands Sojourn - Round Trip from Los Angeles

This 17-day voyage from Los Angeles takes place aboard the Viking Neptune , an all-veranda small ship that carries a maximum of 928 guests. After five days at sea, the first stop is the Big Island, where guests can view Kilauea by helicopter, visit waterfalls, or explore Hilo Bay by kayak. The next port is Oahu, where guests can tour by helicopter, hike Diamond Head, attend a luau, or more. On Kauai, excursions range from an ATV tour of the island to snorkeling along the South Shore. On day 10 in Maui, highlights include Haleakala National Park, snorkeling, and a visit to Maui Ocean Center. The ship then sails to Ensenada, Mexico, where passengers can indulge in wine tastings, e-bike tours, and ATV adventures in the Guadalupe Valley. The Viking Neptune returns to Los Angeles the next day.

Carnival Journeys: 15-day Hawaii Journey from Seattle

This cruise aboard the 2,124-passenger Carnival Spirit spends five days at sea after departing from Seattle. Pickleball, casino games, parties, comedy club, and the WaterWorks, the ship’s onboard waterpark, provide plenty to do. In Honolulu, on day seven, guests can spend the day on Waikiki Beach, visit the Polynesian Cultural Center and the USS Arizona Memorial, or attend a traditional luau. The next day in Maui offers a chance to snorkel or head to the top of Mt. Haleakala. In Kauai, an optional helicopter tour takes guests over Waimea Canyon or the Napali Coast, and the next port is Hilo, on the slopes of volcanic Mauna Loa. After two days at sea, the ship visits Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Seattle.

This Summer in Paris: More ‘Open’ Signs, Thanks to the Olympics

With millions of visitors expected in the city, restaurant and shop owners are hoping they made the right decision to forgo their cherished annual vacations.

A view of the rooftops of Paris. Multistory stone buildings with iron balconies line a leafy street that leads to an imposing building with columns. The Eiffel Tower pokes above the horizon, which is bathed in pink light.

By Lindsey Tramuta

Anyone who’s visited Paris in late July and August knows the word “fermé.” It adorns the darkened windows of chic indie boutiques and cozy bistros whose owners, along with other locals, have fled the city on their annual vacations.

This summer, with Paris expected to draw nearly 15 million visitors between July 26 and Sept. 8 for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, that ritual is anything but certain. Many shopkeepers, bakers, restaurateurs and tour guides — citing patriotism as well as profit — say they’re planning to stay open.

It’s a decision that comes with unpredictability. The 2012 London Olympics have cast a long shadow in Paris. Before those Games, warnings of overcrowded roads, congested transit and security concerns emptied out much of the popular city center and the West End, causing a tourism slump in those areas. Small-business owners in Paris are hoping history does not repeat itself.

The French capital is in a better position than the British capital was, insisted Pierre Rabadan, Paris’s deputy mayor for sports . Most of the events in London were held in one section of the city, he said, while in Paris, they’re taking place all over. “So when businesses have asked if they should stay open,” he explained, “we tell them we’re trying to create the conditions for this to be a real opportunity and for the city to function normally.”

With streets restricted, Metro stations closed and public transportation likely to be jammed, “normally” might be a stretch. But if you’re traveling to Paris for the Olympics or Paralympics, you will most likely find more dining and shopping options than you would otherwise see at that time of year. Here’s what to expect.

Preparations and a few disruptions

“If you want to have your ‘Emily in Paris’ trip to Paris this summer, you absolutely can,” said Olivia Grégoire, France’s minister in charge of tourism . Most popular attractions will remain open as normal, but a few closures could complicate plans.

The Place de la Concorde was set to be blocked off, even to pedestrians and cyclists, as of June 1, and three nearby Metro stations will close until Sept. 21.

The Eiffel Tower will remain open except for the eve and day of the opening ceremony, on July 26. The region’s airspace will also be closed for six hours before and during that event. And because the opening ceremony is set to take place on the Seine, river cruises, among the city’s most popular sightseeing experiences, will stop seven days before the ceremony and resume on July 27 at noon.

Owners of businesses that focus on tours and cultural experiences are banking on early-summer visitors to soften the blow that might come from a drop-off during the Games, after the Paris Tourist Office reported that participation in cultural activities was down 15 percent during the London Olympics.

Fat Tire Tours , a leading bike tour company, will run special Olympics-themed tours in early summer, then pivot to bike rentals during the Games to compensate for an expected drop in tour bookings.

Jane Bertch, a co-owner of La Cuisine Paris cooking school, which offers English-language classes in a location near City Hall, said she had noticed a sharp drop in bookings for late summer, but will “run as many classes as possible.”

Rising to the challenge

The Olympic crowds will bring appetites for Paris’s renowned cuisine, but for months, restaurateurs worried that restrictions on motorized vehicles in security zones around the city’s 25 competition venues could curtail deliveries. City officials have calmed some of those nerves.

“We don’t want restaurants to close during this monumental event because they’re worried about deliveries,” said Grégoire Ambroselli, a co-founder of the food logistics start-up Choco , during an Olympics-related conference in March.

Now, armed with more clarity on how to adapt to delivery challenges, most restaurants and bakeries report they will stay open during the Games, with one big caveat: Many plan to take a break between the closing ceremony, on Aug. 11, and the start of the Paralympics, on Aug. 28.

Maslow , a soaring, centrally located vegetarian restaurant facing the Seine, wouldn’t dream of closing, given its proximity to the Olympic action. But that decision comes with some unease. “We’re staying positive because the energy will be incredible, but we’re a bit worried about how hard it will be for our staff to get to work,” said the executive chef, Mehdi Favri, who is also a co-owner.

Commuting has ranked high among businesses’ concerns. However, locals have faced similar hurdles getting to work before. In 2019, trains across France and public transport in Paris were severely disrupted for nearly two months during a nationwide pension reform strike, forcing workers to walk or cycle long distances.

André Terrail, the owner of the Michelin-starred restaurant La Tour d’Argent , which overlooks the Seine, doesn’t think the Olympic commutes will be quite that complex but admits such challenges, in general, are the price of doing business in Paris. “It’s going to be complicated. We’re all going to be running around. But it’s also going to be amazing,” he said. “If other host cities have found solutions, so will we.”

Etheliya Hananova, a co-owner and sommelier at the contemporary French restaurant Comice , is perhaps the most enthusiastic about the summer ahead — enough to remain open seven days a week for three weeks through Aug. 10. “It’s one of the biggest events in the history of Paris. We’re here to be part of the welcoming committee,” she said.

The scaling-back of the opening ceremony on the Seine has given the antique booksellers, or “bouquinistes,” that line its banks a reprieve, and many plan to stay open. Shoppers will also be able to browse in department stores such as Galeries Lafayette , Printemps and Le Bon Marché . For those seeking something unconventional, the St.-Ouen flea market will sprawl out as usual, offering antiques, vintage clothing and more.

Outside the tourist areas, popular restaurants and bars like Holybelly , Folderol , Kubri , Abricot Le Mary Celeste and Fulgurances aim to draw visitors seeking a break from the crowds. “We’ve decided to open more — six days a week,” said Rebecca Asthalter, a co-owner of Fulgurances . Likewise, independent boutiques such as Landline , which sells home goods in a residential neighborhood east of the Bastille, are hoping travelers branch out to calmer parts of the city.

Back in the thick of the action, Marin Montagut, an artist and illustrator who sells hand-painted table accessories, stationery, silk scarves and candles from an apothecary-style boutique near the Luxembourg Gardens, is planning a Paris-inspired display of his wares. “I’m looking at this like it’s the World’s Fair. I want to honor the city and be open to all,” he said. “If I’m not optimistic during this period, when will I be?”

Amy Virshup contributed reporting.
