The World Snooker Championship final has arrived with Kyren Wilson and Jak Jones set to duel for glory, a place in the history books and a huge, wallet-lining prize money payday.
Another hefty total, just short of £2.5 million, will be split between competitors for their exploits at The Crucible in Sheffield over the last two weeks. Approximately a fifth of that total will be paid out to the winner of the showpiece encounter.
However, while the payday is more than healthy, reigning champion Luca Brecel infamously burned through his cash mountain following the 2023 tournament.

He immediately splashed £350,000 of his winnings on a Ferrari 488, and reportedly added other cars including a Range Rover and Porsche to his collection, deliberately forgoing his status as a millionaire in the process to "maybe feel that bit of pressure again, to recreate the feeling I had of just starting my career".
Unfortunately for Luca, he crashed out of the tournament in the first round on the opening day of the tournament. A brand new first-time champion will be crowned on Monday night.

World Snooker Championship 2024 prize money including huge 147 bonus
Share this with
The World Snooker Championship is the biggest tournament in the game and with it comes the most prize money.
With the ranking system based on prize money, the cash does not only improve a player’s bank balance but determines where they are ranked in the world, which is key for qualifying for events.
Outside of just winning matches there is also a high break prize and a bonus for landing a maximum 147 break.
There is also an extra, and much bigger, prize for any player who makes two 147 breaks over the three Triple Crown events this season – the UK Championship, Masters and World Championship.
Although less and less likely as the tournament goes on, technically that whopping bonus is still on offer with two frames left of the World Championship final.
World Snooker Championship prize money
Winner: £500,000 Runner-up: £200,000 Semi-finalists: £100,000 Quarter-finalists: £50,000 Last 16: £30,000 Last 32: £20,000
147 prize money
There is a bonus of £40,000 on offer for a 147 made at the Crucible, although if two players make one then it will be shared.
There was a £10,000 bonus for a 147 during the qualifying rounds, which Noppon Saengkham has already bagged for his effort at the English Instutute of Sport.
Those bonuses are paid on top of the £15,000 high break prize which runs throughout the entire event.
What is the double 147 bonus?
Any player who makes two maximum breaks over the Triple Crown events this season earns themself a huge bonus of £147,000.
Coming into the World Championship Xu Si had made a 147 at the UK Championship, while Ding Junhui and Mark Allen had knocked in maximums at the Masters.
Ding and Xu have been eliminated, but Allen can still bag the huge prize with a 147 at the Crucible.
Everyone else still left in the tournament can also still claim the bonus, but will need to make two maximums before the end of the event.
There have only been 14 maximums in the Crucible’s history, which dates back to 1977.
Cliff Thorburn made the first in 1983 and Mark Selby the most recent in last year’s final.
Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry (3), Ronnie O’Sullivan (3), Mark Williams, Ali Carter, John Higgins, Neil Robertson and Kyren Wilson have all also landed maximums at the Crucible.

Ferguson Hails New Prize Money Guarantee Scheme for World Snooker Tour
7th September 2022
World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) Chairman Jason Ferguson has welcomed the introduction of a new prize money guarantee scheme that will see players on the World Snooker Tour (WST) guaranteed to earn a minimum of £20,000 for the first time during the 2022/23 season.
Jointly announced by WST and snooker’s world governing body the WPBSA, and supported by the WPBSA’s own players board , the new initiative will provide unprecedented support for all professional players. In particular, the scheme will provide stability for players to compete throughout the year.
Jason Ferguson, WPBSA Chairman said: “We are today delighted to be able to announce this new scheme which will underpin the future of our sport going forwards.
“There can be no question that the World Snooker Tour represents the pinnacle of our sport and that every player who has qualified through our recognised WPBSA pathways is deserving of the opportunity to compete at the very highest level.
“However, we are currently living through challenging times, with the global cost of living crisis combined with the continued impact of the coronavirus pandemic upon the international calendar, undoubtedly having a destabilising effect upon players.
“We further recognise that talent can come from anywhere around the globe, there are players from no fewer than 19 countries currently represented on the World Snooker Tour and I am sure this scheme will now make it possible for anyone to achieve their dreams and fulfil their potential. Player welfare is an issue that we take extremely seriously, and there is no doubt that this scheme will ease the pressure for many of our members, allowing them to do what they do best – play snooker and entertain the many millions of fans around the world.
“This scheme demonstrates the value of earning a two-year WST Tour Card and has been made possible through the tripartite structure that exists within our sport. This includes our commercial arm WST, the WPBSA as world governing body and crucially our WPBSA Players organisation, which ensures that the views of the players are heard at all stages. This demonstrates that our new constitutional changes at the WPBSA are working. I would like to place on record my thanks to fellow Chairman at WST Steve Dawson, the WST Board of Directors, and the new Players Board currently chaired by Ken Doherty, all of whom have contributed to making this happen.”

Snooker players to earn minimum £20,000 prize money in major cash boost for new season
Updated 07/09/2022 at 17:59 GMT
The World Snooker Tour has been boosted by a major £2.6m cash injection which will guarantee all 130 players a minimum of £20,000 win or lose this season. "We recognise that these are tough times for many people given the cost of living crisis and that a £20,000 guarantee provides an important level of reassurance," said Steve Dawson, the WST chairman.

English Open returns with bigger prize money, new format and star names in the draw
B rentwood is going to feel very different to Riyadh for the stars of the World Snooker Tour, but the English Open is back with bigger prize money and a revamped format.
The players made it clear that they thoroughly enjoyed the big-money Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters last week, with Judd Trump leaving the Kingdom with a top prize of £500,000.
A return to the greying skies of Essex in September and the no-frills atmosphere of the Brentwood Centre will be a stark contrast, but there are reasons to be cheerful.
The prize pot this season is up to £550,400 from last season’s £427,000. which represents a meaningful increase of £123,400, after discussions between WST and the WPBSA Players Board.
The boost to the prize fund means the winner will leave Brentwood with £100,000, while the new tiered system means money is won down to the last 96 rather than last 64.
The tiered draw has been brought in for the Home Nations this season, meaning players seeded 65-96 meet players seeded 97-128 in round one, with those 32 winners taking on players seeded 33-64 in round two.
The 32 players that come through that round join the top 32 seeds in the last 64 from Monday onwards.
English Open prize money
Winner: £100,000 (up from £80,000)
Runner-up: £45,000 (up from £35,000)
Semi-finals: £21,000 (up from £17,500)
Quarter-finals: £13,200 (up from £11,000)
Last 16: £9,000 (up from £7,500)
Last 32: £5,400 (up from £4,500)
Last 64: £3,600 (up from £3,000)
Last 96: £1,000
While there could still be some late withdrawals, it is a star-studded line-up that will be in Brentwood, featuring all the game’s top names.

Shaun Murphy is the reigning champion after pipping Kyren Wilson to a 10-7 win during the 2023 final.
And as result, the English icon took home a winning share of £150,000.
However, Murphy did not participate this year and even revealed in 2023 that he considered quitting snooker after struggling with a loss of form, weight gain and mental health.
Meaning there is set to be a new champion and someone else will be taking home a big bag of money.
