A safari is one of the most exhilarating bucket list experiences in the world, getting you up close to some of the world’s most remarkable wildlife and landscapes. From the iconic plains of the Serengeti to the lush wetlands of Okavango and the desert wildlife of Etosha, here are 12 of the best safari destinations in the world to inspire your safari adventure.

1. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Passionate Guides Tanzania (@passionateguidestz)

Serengeti National Park is an icon of Africa and one of the best safari destinations in the world for spotting the Big 5 and so much more. Located in northern Tanzania, this UNESCO-listed national park is one of the oldest ecosystems on earth. It’s filled with plants and animals that have barely changed over the past million years.

The park is an epic expanse of plains and grassland, dotted with all of the Big 5 and other safari favourites like giraffes, zebra, hyenas, cheetah and the rare African wild dog.

The Serengeti is also famed as the home of ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ – the Great Migration. Over two million wildebeest, zebra, impala and gazelle cross the Mara River in a thundering mass each year in search of greener pastures. The migration sets off annually around July towards the Masai Mara in Kenya. The herd then makes the 1,000km journey back to Tanzania around October or November when the rains set in.

The wildebeest must dodge stalking predators like lions and leopards on their journey, while huge clouds of migrating birds fly overhead. As the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, it’s an astonishing sight to behold.

2. Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Safari Trails (@safari_trails)

Venture over the border of the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya, the other half of the mighty Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. As one of the best safari destinations in the world, the Maasai Mara dishes up extraordinary wildlife viewing, including all the Big 5.

You’ll also likely spot giraffes, hippos and crocodiles lurking in the rivers, along with more than two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle that arrive in a thundering mass during the Great Migration.

Besides the incredible wildlife, the Maasai Mara is renowned for its rich culture. You can visit a traditional Maasai village where you’ll meet the Maasai people and witness their colourful traditions.

3. Kruger National Park, South Africa

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kruger National Park (@krugernationalpark)

Kruger National Park is the oldest and most iconic national park in South Africa. It’s also one of the top bucket list experiences on the whole continent. Covering a staggering two million hectares (the size of Israel or Slovenia), you’ll have a good chance of spotting the famous Big 5, the unique Little 5 , and everything in between.

There’s also reliable sightings and a high density of animals in the private reserves around the Kruger National Park. One of our favourite areas is the Karongwe Private Game Reserve. Here you can spot all the Big 5 and learn about the traditions and local deliacies of the Shangaan people at a local village.

Is Kruger or Serengeti better?

One of the most common questions we get from our guests is whether to visit Kruger or Serengeti. They’re two of the most iconic safari destinations in the world, and most people usually only have time to visit one of them on a safari trip, due to the large distance between them.

While you can’t go wrong with either Kruger or Serengeti, the best choice for you will depend on what you want to get from your safari. With Kruger, you can spot a wild range of wildife including the Big Five, and it’s more easily accessible, with a range of accommodation options. It’s ideal for those seeking convenience and flexibility, however it can also be more crowded for this reason. On the other hand, the Serengeti is more remote and typically more expensive as travel logistics are more complex. The pay off is that you can see an abundance of wildlife including the Big Five, and the breathtaking Great Migration. The park offers a more pristine wilderness experience and has unique activities like hot-air balloon rides. Ultimately, your choice should be based on the types of wildlife and activities you’re interested in, your budget, and the amount of time you have.

4. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ngorongoro Crater (@ngorongoro_crater)

As one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the continent’s best safari hotspots. Located in the Crater Highlands of northern Tanzania, Ngorongoro is an ancient volcanic crater spanning 260 square kilometres. The crater is surrounded by a 600-metre high wall, and it’s the largest intact and unfilled caldera in the world.

It’s home to over 25,000 large game animals, including all the Big 5. The conservation area protects Tanzania’s last remaining population of the endangered black rhino. You can also spot cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, spotted hyenas and the critically endangered African wild dog. The crater is also dotted with sparkling soda lakes where you can see hippos and massive pink flocks of flamingo.

Ngorongoro has also been home to humans for around three million years and occupied by pastoralist tribes, like the Maasai, for the past 2,000 years. You can visit a Maasai village and even see casts of the fossilised footprints found at Olduvai Gorge. These famous footprints prove humans were walking on two legs at least 3.7 million years ago.

5. Etosha National Park, Namibia

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Etosha National Park ORG (@etoshanationalpark)

Etosha is the greatest national park in Namibia, famed for its striking desert landscapes and abundant wildlife. You’ll have the chance to spot four of the Big 5 as there are no buffalo in Etosha, however you can spot them in the nearby Waterberg Plateau and Caprivi Strip. Meanwhile, the huge populations of lions and elephants make up for it.

Etosha is also one of the best places in Africa to see the white rhino and critically endangered black rhino. These precious creatures have been poached to near extinction on the continent, but you can still find them around the waterholes of Etosha.

The waterholes are also a great place to spot lurking lions, leopards, cheetah and hyena. You can also spot herds of elephants coming to get a drink and bathe in the water. With its unique desert-adapted animals, Etosha is undoubtedly one of the best safari destinations in the world.

6. Chobe National Park, Botswana

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chobe National Park (@chobe_national_park)

It’s all about elephants in Chobe, and this national park is one of the best safari destinations in the world to see these majestic creatures. There are around 120,000 elephants in the park and we love spotting them on a Chobe River cruise.

You’ll have the chance to see elephants, buffalo, lions and leopards come to the river bank to drink, while birds like the kingfisher hover over the water. The best time to spot the huge elephant herds is the dry season from May to October. Wildlife viewing is at its absolute best from August to October.

Unfortunately, rhinos are extremely rare to spot in Chobe after having their population decimated over the years. The good news is they are slowly being reintroduced to private areas of the park.

7. Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Samburu National Reserve (@samburunationalreserve)

Take a journey into the wild bushland of the Samburu National Reserve on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Here you’ll have the chance to spot a unique kind of Big 5 – the ‘Samburu Special 5’. These five rare animals can only be found in the Samburu ecosystem and include the Reticulated giraffe, the Grevy’s Zebra, the Beisa oryx, the Somali ostrich and the gerenuk.

You might even get to spot some of these animals on a special guided nature walk. You’ll be accompanied by an expert naturalist, who will share their wealth of wisdom on the plants and animals found in the area.

Along with the Samburu Special 5, you’ll also have the chance to see more famous animals including elephants and lions just like Elsa, the lion cub made famous in the award-winning book and movie ‘Born Free’. Samburu National Reserve was one of two areas where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised the lion cub.

You can get to know more about the region’s conservation and anti-poaching efforts in the nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa.

8. Okavango Delta, Botswana

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Okavango Delta (@okavangodeltabotswana)

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a unique mosaic of islands, waterways, and lagoons, creating a rich environment for an abundance of wildlife. Known for its remarkable seasonal flooding, which contrasts against the dry Kalahari desert, the delta becomes a lush animal habitat. Travelers can explore this biodiverse world by mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe), with close-up encounters of animals like hippos, elephants, leopards and an incredible variety of birds.

9. Solio Game Reserve, Kenya

Located between the foothills of the Aberdares and the slopes of Mount Kenya, this privately-owned conservancy is one of the most successful rhino breeding reserve in the world. Founded in the 1970s, Solio Game Reserve provides a safe haven for both black and white rhinos, housing the largest population of white rhinos on earth. It’s a relatively hidden gem on the safari circuit, offering guests the rare chance to see not only large numbers of rhinos but also buffalos, zebras, giraffes, leopards, and lions among the grassland and acacia forests.

10. South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

South Luangwa National Park may be off the beaten track but it’s undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries. It’s home to endemic animals like Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest and Crawshay’s zebra, found nowhere else on earth. You’ll also find the world’s highest naturally occurring population of leopards. As the ‘birthplace of the walking safari’ visitors can also embrace the unique experience of tracking and spotting animals on foot.

11. Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TANZANIA SMILE SAFARIS (@tanzania_smile_safaris_)

With its unusual landscapes dotted with giant baobabs, flat-topped acacias and termite mounds, Tarangire National Park is unlike anything you’ll see in Tanzania. The wildlife is just as captivating as the landscapes, as the park is renowned as one of the best places to view elephants. You can also see adorable tree hyraxes and over 300 recorded species of birds. The park is particularly spectacular during the dry season when animal concentrations are among the highest in Tanzania, driven to the Tarangire River.

12. Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mana Pools (@manapools_nationalpark)

Located in northern Zimbabwe along the lower Zambezi River, Mana Pools National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its wildlife and natural beauty. The name “Mana” means “four” in the Shona language, referring to the four large pools formed by the Zambezi River. The pools attract a high concentration of wildlife, making it a spectacular spot for game viewing. The park also offers some exciting experiences such as walking safaris and canoe safaris, so you can watch the wildlife from every angle, including elephants, hippos, lions and over 350 bird species.

It's hard to find a travel bucket list that doesn't contain a safari of some kind, and rightly so. There are few travel experiences that can top seeing wild animals roam freely in their natural habitat.

From spotting tigers in India to watching the great migration in Africa, there are myriad ways to experience a safari. If you are looking for inspiration, here are some of the biggest and best safari experiences from around the world.

Ranthambore National Park, India

A tiger walks past a vehicle carrying tourists at Ranthambore National Park in India.

Located near the town of Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan, northern India, Ranthambore is one of the best places in the world to spot tigers. The area, which spans about 1,335 square kilometres, is bounded to the north by the Banas River and to the south by the Chambal River, with the historic Ranthambore Fort, after which it is named, located within the park.

The park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including Indian leopard, Indian elephant, wild water buffalo, gaur (Indian bison), wild boar, spotted deer, striped hyena and Bengal fox. Its biggest draw, however, is its Bengal tiger population. Thanks to Project Tiger, an initiative started by the Indian government in 1973, the area has a designated tiger sanctuary. The year 2021 was a record one for breeding at the park, with 21 new tiger cubs born.

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Covering an area of about 979 square km, Yala is Sri Lanka’s most visited national park. The area, which was first designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, is made up of six separate national parks and three wildlife sanctuaries. Among the animals that can be found there are sloth bears, saltwater crocodiles, wild water buffalo and more than 215 species of birds. The park is also important for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants and Sri Lankan leopards, both of which reside at Yala in strong numbers.

Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Measuring about 14,600 square km, Hwange National Park is the largest nature reserve in Zimbabwe. Founded in 1929, the park, which sits to the north-west of the country, close to Victoria Falls, is home to 100 mammal and 400 bird species, including 19 large herbivores and eight large carnivores.

The park has a particularly high number of elephants, thanks to successful breeding programmes, and also has two national protection programmes, one for leopards and one for African wild dogs. Within the national park, there are dozens of public and privately operated camp areas, to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of tourists who flock here each year.

Masai Mara, Kenya

Located in the south-west of Kenya, Masai Mara is one of the best-known wildlife conservation areas in the world. It spans about 1,510 square km and is home to spectacular diversity in terms of wildlife. Large numbers of lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and more can be found in the park, unconfined and free to roam the vast wilderness that stretches for miles on end.

The Pantanal, Brazil

The Pantanal is part national park, part Unesco World Heritage site, and covers about 195,000 square km in Brazil. It competes with the Amazon as the premier wildlife destination in South America. However, as the world’s largest tropical wetland, it also boasts the highest concentration of wildlife on the continent. Expect to see everything from birds to jaguars and giant anteaters to green anacondas.

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Planning a safari in 2021? From the charms of Kenya to glorious South Africa, from Botswana to Uganda, there are dozens of world-class safari destinations to explore in Africa. Here’s our pick of ten of the very best safari destinations:

1. Kruger National Park

Safari Destinations: Inspiration On Where To Go 10

Kruger National Park is one of the largest parks in Africa with an area of 12,070 square kilometers. Located in South Africa, it is bigger than the smallest country in the world (Vatican City). It has nine entry gates, and in order to roam around, you will need to hop on a vehicle. Speed is limited to 50 kmph in this area. On a yearly basis, there are over one million people visiting this place.

The park opened in 1927 and, since then, it has become the most popular African reserve, filled with many different species. “The big 5” animals (lions, rhinos, leopards, buffaloes, and elephants) call this part of the world their home. Moreover, over 500 bird species, up to 120 reptile species, and more than 80 mammal species also live here, ready to be explored.

If you are a fan of classic safari tours, consider visiting Kruger National Park. This is the perfect way to see them in their natural environment.

2. Maasai Mara

The name ”Mara” means ”spotted,” meaning that you can see very far away from almost any point of the reserve.

With an area of 600 square miles (965 square kilometers), it’s one the biggest national parks in Africa. Kenyans are very proud of it, and they have good reasons to be!

”The big 5” can be seen here as well, but this place is best known for the hyena research and lion monitoring centers. If you loved the BBC’s ‘Big cat diary’ documentary you’ll know how stunning the Maasai Mara National Park is.

Maasai Mara is home to one of the world’s largest natural phenomena’s that occur from July to October –  the Great Migration . Around 1.8 million of wild creatures, zebras, and gazelles hit the road, which makes the Maasai Mara the perfect place to be if you want to see this spectacle.

3. Arusha National Park

Safari Destinations: Inspiration On Where To Go 11

This astonishing park lies on the Mount Meru active volcanic prominence in the Arusha region of Tanzania. It is the second highest peak after Mount Kilimanjaro , which is almost 40 miles (60 kilometers) away. With an area of 50 square miles (80 square kilometers), it was established in 1960 by the Tanzanian Government and, since then, it has had around 60,000 visitors per year.

Much smaller than other national parks in the safari league, it’s the best place to see many beautiful and fascinating birds. Prepare your safari gadgets for this trip, and enjoy the charm of those feathery friends.

You can choose between hiking tours or canoe rides, but no matter what your decision is, you will most probably encounter giraffes, too. This is the world’s largest home for the  tallest animals on the planet.

The great thing about this place is that you can see all there is to be seen in one day, which is a rare experience when it comes to safari.

4. Okavango Delta

A large, swampy river that encompasses almost 8,850 square kilometers of the Kalahari Desert is the life source to all wildlife in this area.

From March until July, frequent floods help animals and plants thrive in this habitat. The very challenging and complex circle of high temperatures, rains, and consequential evaporation was first fully understood at the end of the 20th century. The Okavango Delta is essential to sustaining life in this part of Botswana. During winter, this river is around three times bigger than during summertime, producing much-needed water.

In 2014, the Okavango Delta was recognized as one of the 1,000 world wonders, and it is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

5. Victoria Falls

Safari Destinations: Inspiration On Where To Go 12

Located on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, 360ft (110m) tall, this beauty is listed as one of the seven world wonders by CNN.

Over 400,000 tourists visit Victoria Falls annually. If you are visiting somewhere between September and December, and you are adventurous, you will be able to see the ”Devil’s Pool” or the naturally formed ”Armchair.” These phenomena appear due to lower levels of water during this period and, as a result, swimmers can reach stones that act as safety holds on the edge.

6. Etosha National Park

With almost 9,000 square miles (14,500 square kilometres), the Etosha National Park  is home to the  black rhinoceros , one of the world’s engaged species. Europeans discovered these lands, and the original name that translates as ”Great White Place.”

Large populations of animals became extinct due to uncontrolled hunting during the 19th and 20th centuries. After the government has officially proclaimed Etosha a national park, some species recovered. Unfortunately, some species, like the  cape buffalos and cape wild dogs, cannot be seen anymore.

Fortunately, the African bush elephant, mountain zebras, Angolan giraffes, African lions, and leopards frequently show up, followed up by an enormous diversity of birds.

With more than 100 mammal species, around 300 species of birds , followed by 100 reptile species, this is one of the largest reserves of wildlife.

7. Chobe National Park

Established in 1967 on a large area of 4,500 square miles (7,240 square kilometers), it’s one of Botswana’s three largest National Parks. Conventionally, the park has four areas, and it’s divided like this because of the very different ecosystems in each of them. From May through October (dry season), the Chobe River floods the area, which becomes a place of gathering for elephants, giraffes, buffalos, the very rare puku antelope, and many bird species.

It is very popular among tourists because it’s not far from Victoria Falls. The other section, called the Savuti Marsh, has savannahs and rolling grasslands. Here you can see lions, rhinoceros, cheetahs, and zebras, as well as a conglomeration of more than 400 species of birds. Every part of this park has one unique beauty trademark.

Mainly, the park is known as home to the Kalahari elephants, the largest elephant species in the world. More than 40,000 elephants live here, the elephant population with the highest density in Africa. During the dry season, they migrate to the Chobe River and the Linyanti River.

8. Western Cape

Safari Destinations: Inspiration On Where To Go 13

One of the largest and most populated provinces in South Africa , with four great African rivers that flow into the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, the Western Cape is one of the world’s seven ”floral gardens,” with incredible diversity and endemic species. The Western Cape has four universities and the highest number of highly educated young people in Africa.

Cape Town stands at the foothills of Table Mountain, and you can visit it using the cableway that will take you to the top of the mountain (1,066 meters). If you are a fitness fan, maybe you can hike up there, it’s up to you. Rock climbing and mountain biking are also very popular among tourists, as are Cape Town walking tours .

Table Bay on the Atlantic Ocean has one more secret – a famous prison in which Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, now a museum. Annually, more than 25 million tourists come here to enjoy different mountain activities.

This combination of urban environment and wild nature will make you fall in love with Cape Town and this province.

Bonus safari… in India! Ranthambore National Park

Safari Destinations: Inspiration On Where To Go 14

Ranthambore National Park was established as an Indian national park by the government in 1973 as a project with one simple goal – making a sanctuary for tigers. In 1980, it became the world’s largest home of Bengal Tigers, known as ”the biggest tigers of all.”

Early in the morning, before sunrise and after riding through the forests, you can see large numbers of different species coming to the riverside. It will be impossible to miss seeing Padam Talao Lake, as well as marvellous Jogi Mahal – great places for tourists to take a break while on the road.

Ranthambore offers a rich variety of wildlife species, not only when it comes to the wild cats, but also for the birds and reptiles. For example, the most famous and largest Indian tree species,  the Banyan, can also be found in forests covering this area.

Finally, we suggest that you take some time and go visit the old Ranthambore Fort high in mountains. It will take your breath away.

Africa is a vast continent, and if you are planning a trip there, you may well be wondering where to go and which of the hundreds of national parks and game reserves to choose from. Help is at hand.

Here, I weigh in on the top 10 parks and reserves per a safaribookings.com report that takes into account the reviews of 2,300 tourists and 1,000 African travel experts — and share what you can expect to see when you get there based on my decades of safari experience.

1. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Coming in at number one is Serengeti National Park, in northern Tanzania. The Serengeti shares a border with Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve (which we will chat about more when you reach the number 10 spot on this list). Serengeti’s sprawling grasslands make for those classic safari views with flat-topped acacia trees and grazing herds of zebra and antelope. These grazing herds attract large numbers of predators, and the open plains make for a fantastic destination to watch lions and cheetahs in action.

The Serengeti is also home to the annual Great Migration, in which over one million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of other ungulates make their over-600-mile circular trek. The animals travel from their breeding grounds in the south to fresh pastures in the north, all the while with predators hot on their heels. The Great Migration is one of the most impressive natural events in the world.

As an exciting and special bonus, black rhinos were reintroduced into the Serengeti, some in 2010 and more in 2019, and earlier this year, a black rhino calf was born to one of the reintroduced females — the first black rhino birth in the park for decades.

Nomad Tanzania has the beautiful Serengeti Safari Camp which is the perfect location to catch the wildebeest migration.

Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe.

2. Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

Next on our list, we have Mana Pools National Park in the far north of Zimbabwe. The Zambezi River’s wide waters form the boundary between Zimbabwe and Zambia. On the southern Zimbabwean side is Mana Pools National Park, a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site and a park known for fantastic wildlife visibility beside the river and flood plains. (On the northern bank is Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park, which we will focus on when we reach number 5 in our countdown).

Mana is the Shona (local language) word for four, and within the park, the river channels have created four large pools, giving the park its name. These pools are surrounded by forests of mahogany, wild fig, ebony, and winter thorns. In the dry season, the shady glades beneath these trees are filled with wildlife — herds of impala, eland, elephant, zebra, buffalo, waterbuck, and kudu. These animals provide a plentiful supply of prey for both predators and scavengers. There are several sizable prides of lion as well as leopards and hyenas. Mana Pools is also a stronghold for wild dogs.

Mana Pools National Park is the perfect place for walking and canoeing safaris. David Attenborough’s wildlife series for the BBC , “Dynasties ,” filmed the episode about wild dogs in the park. I have spent hours watching these same wild dogs and I can promise you the park is the perfect place to go to spot this endangered African animal.

African Bush Camps have three fantastic lodges in Mana Pools, each in a different park area.

3. MalaMala Game Reserve, South Africa

MalaMala is the oldest and one of the largest private Big Five game reserves in South Africa. It covers 37 000 acres, shares a 12-mile unfenced boundary with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and is sandwiched in a prime position between the Kruger and the Sabi Sands Reserve, giving it great access to abundant wildlife.

In the local language, Xitsonga, the name Malamala means Kudu, and the area got its name from the abundance of these majestic, spiral-horned antelope within the game reserve. The reserve is also home to the Big Five and is famous for luxury photographic safaris.

MalaMala is the place to start your search for accommodation within the reserve.

4. Okavango Delta, Botswana

The Okavango Delta is a vast inland river delta in northern Botswana. The area is known for its sprawling grassy plains, which flood seasonally, becoming a lush animal habitat. The delta supports an astonishing variety of wildlife. The best time to visit is during the annual flood, when many of the animals are confined to islands created by the floodwaters, making them easier to spot. Highlights include great herds of elephant and antelope, hippos, crocodiles, lions, and cheetah. Many of the birds spotted here are endemic.

The most exciting way to explore the area is by traditional dugout canoe (mokoro), which I first did in my early twenties, navigating past hippos, elephants, and crocodiles, and spending several nights camping on tiny islands. About 40 percent of the Okavango Delta is in the Moremi Game Reserve, on the eastern edge of the Delta, and we will focus on that when we reach number 6.

Very much the center of Botswana’s safari industry, the Okavango Delta features some of Africa’s premier camps. A good place to start your accommodation search is with Wilderness Safaris who has several beautiful luxury lodges in the Okavango Delta.

An elephant at Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia.

5. Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

If you follow the Zambezi River about 300 miles downstream of the Victoria Falls, opposite Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools, you will find the pristine wilderness of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park.

An area of abundant wildlife, from herds of elephants to soaring fish eagles and everything in between. A hunting ground for lions, leopards, and wild dogs. A timeless valley of giant towering winter thorns where wildlife finds sanctuary in the dappled shade. The area’s beauty lies in its wildness and the spectacular opportunities to get up close to the game that wanders in and out of the Zambezi’s channels.

The river is home to hippos and crocodiles and is the perfect place for sunset boat trips, trawling for the coveted tiger fish, and one of my favorite activities, canoeing safaris. I have traveled the length of the Lower Zambezi National Park by both road and river, and can highly recommend this beautiful park.

Anabezi has three fantastic lodges along this stretch of the river and is a great place to start planning your trip.

6. Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana

Coming in at number six, Moremi Game Reserve is a protected wildlife area in Botswana. It lies on the Okavango Delta’s eastern side and was named after Chief Moremi of the BaTawana tribe. Moremi was designated as a game reserve, rather than a national park, when it was created, which meant that the BaSarwa or Bushmen who lived there were allowed to remain in the reserve. Among other animals, the reserve is home to cheetah, white and black rhinoceros (rarely seen), wild dogs, lions, and over 500 bird species. This ecosystem is amongst the richest in Africa.

Island Safari Lodge is an ideal jumping-off point for a trip into Moremi, and they also offer fantastic mobile safaris into the reserve, which I have done with my family and thoroughly enjoyed. Let this small but diverse area blow you away with its wildlife.

7. South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

In eastern Zambia, South Luangwa National Park plays host to huge concentrations of wildlife, including elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, hippo — over 450 species of bird and 60 species of mammal! South Luangwa is also arguably the best place in Africa to see leopards.

South Luangwa is known for incredible walking safaris that give you the chance to get up close to the park’s wildlife. There is something incredibly special about a safari on foot — no noise from vehicles, just the crunch of dry grass underfoot. Your senses are heightened; you see and hear things that you have never noticed before. You become conscious of how loud your breath sounds in your ears as you try hard to walk silently through the bush. For an expertly guided walking safari in South Luangwa, you can’t go wrong with Surefoot Safaris .

Panoramic view of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania.

8. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Crater formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself two or three million years ago, creating a crater 2,000 feet deep and a 64,000-acre floor. The Ngorongoro Crater is home to an exceptional concentration of fauna; it is estimated that over 25,000 large animals live here (I’m not including birds, insects, or reptiles in this count!), including huge herds of wildebeests and zebras. There is also no shortage of predators, with the crater being home to lion, hyena, cheetah, jackal, caracals, bat-eared foxes, and more. A definite highlight is the healthy population of black rhino and some of the largest tusker elephants on the continent. The lake at the center of the crater hosts huge flocks of rose-colored flamingos, while Maasai tribespeople still live within the conservation area.

Given its size, the Ngorongoro Crater really only needs a day or two of your travel time, and is best as part of a larger East African itinerary, perhaps combining the wildlife wonders of the Crater w with the migration spectacle of the Serengeti or the laid-back beaches of Zanzibar. I often take a day trip to Ngorongoro as a break at the end of a Kilimanjaro climb.

As a taste of luxury, perhaps try Ngorongoro Crater Lodge for a special visit to this fantastic place.

9. Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa

The Sabi Sands Game Reserve is a 160,000-acre reserve pioneered by local landowners in the 1950s and shares a 31-mile-long unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park. Known for delivering excellent Big Five game viewing, with some extraordinary close encounters and prolific sightings, particularly of the elusive leopard, this area is considered one of the best safari areas in South Africa.

Sabi Sands offers a variety of accommodation options to suit everyone and every budget. As there are several lodges to choose from in the game reserve, visit Sabi Sands to start planning your trip.

10. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Last but not least, and located in the extreme southwest of Kenya, on the border with Tanzania, is the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Covering over 580 square miles, this quintessential safari destination is home to the Big Five and is famous for its thriving big cat populations. Special Maasai Mara experiences include hot air balloon safaris, visits to local Maasai villages, and of course, the Great Migration, which is when the Mara is a pit stop for almost two million wildebeest, zebra, and antelope crossing from Tanzania across the mighty Mara River on their death-defying, 1,800-mile circular journey. In fact, these herds are so big they can be observed from space.

The Maasai Mara is a photographer’s paradise, with year-round game viewing, incredible big cat sightings, and large concentrations of elephant, buffalo, and giraffe. Governors’ Camp was the first permanent tented camp in the Masai Mara, and it occupies some of the best wildlife viewing locations in the reserve.

There is nothing quite like the thrill of an African safari. The stillness of the early morning, before the heat of the sun covers the land. The sound of wild creatures calling in the night. The sense of adventure that comes from being surrounded by untamed wilderness. Above all, it’s the excitement of being in the bush, never quite knowing what new sights, sounds, and experiences the day will bring. I’ve given you a tiny taste of 10 of the most popular safari destinations on the continent. Choose one of these for your next African adventure and you won’t be disappointed.

Without a doubt, Africa is the continent where you can get the best wildlife experience possible. Drifting away from the vulgarity of zoos, travel in African safaris aims to bring travelers and wild animals together in a more natural environment.

The animals can roam around in their natural habitats, while the tourists, accompanied by experienced safari guides, can walk or drive around safely without safety. The national parks in East Africa and Southern Africa present excellent opportunities for animal encounters that will make your heart pound faster than it ever could when watching a documentary.

Africa is a massive continent with many options when it comes to wildlife viewing. In this article, we will break down the top safaris in Africa, country by country. We will explain how each country stands out and what their highlights are.

Best Tours of African Safaris by Country

Before planning your vacation of African safaris, you first need to book a flight ticket, which means you have to decide on the country. Here are the countries that offer the most pleasant wildlife experiences.

top 10 safari parks in the world

Why Safari In Kenya

In an African country where tourism is the second most important income, wildlife tourism is of particular significance. The dense savannah vegetation makes the country perfect for viewing a wide diversity of wild animals. As a result, Kenya has a high concentration of predators, such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

More importantly, it seasonally witnesses the phenomenal wildebeest migration, where thousands of these wild herbivores migrate from drylands to grasslands in the hope of finding food. This is a sight that you can only experience in two countries, and Kenya is one of them.

With 54 protected national parks, Kenya has some of the most well-maintained game reserves in the world. The best part is, you can experience them with the guidance of local Masai people .

Why Safari In Tanzania

Among African safaris, Tanzania’s is one of the most amazing and unforgettable experiences. The abundance of lakes in the northern region and the unfenced borders with Kenya’s National Parks makes Tanzania an accomplice in the world-famous wildebeest migration.

The Northern Circuit sees the largest population of wild animals in the world, with millions of herbivores, thousands of big cats and other predators, and vast numbers of rare species.

Safari in Tanzania is not only popular in the north. The southwest of the country stands out for its chimpanzee population, which you can visit thanks to affordable safari tours. There are even safari parks next to the coast, which is extremely rare.

Another advantage of a Tanzanian safari is that you can combine it with a diving experience along the pristine Swahili coast.

Why Safari In Botswana

Botswana has a reputation that transcends our planet when it comes to wildlife. This small landlocked country has surprisingly diverse climate zones and vegetation. The south and center are taken up by the Kalahari, which is one of the largest drylands in the world.

On the other hand, the north of Botswana is an oasis that stems from the Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world. There are several rivers that run across the country, especially in the north. Finally, the northeast of Botswana has a distinct collection of salt pans that seasonally flood and give rise to a lush and nutritious grassland.

The bottom line is, any type of animal can easily find a spot in Botswana and adapt to the climate. There is an incredible amount of antelopes and big cats that have adapted to the Kalahari’s dryness, while the Makgadikgadi and Nxai pans receive a mass migration of elephants, zebras, buffaloes, giraffes, followed by hundreds of predators every year.

The region around the Okavango, especially the Chobe National Park is best known for having the highest concentration of wildlife in a national park, including endangered species.

With 80% of the country allocated to conservation areas, finding African safaris in Botswana is like finding water in the sea. Speaking of water, Botswana is close to the Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the world, which means it is easy to merge your African safari trip with a tour to the Victoria Falls.

Why Safari in South Africa

Many African safari destinations are hard to reach because of the lack of good road networks. This is not true for South Africa, as it is one of the very few countries where you can drive to the national reserves, or even drive within them on well-maintained roads.

On top of that, South Africa is one of the most important players in wildlife tourism around the world. The Kruger National Park alone is enough to overshadow many of Africa’s safari parks. Not only does it have one of the largest mammal populations in the world, but it is also one of the best when it comes to viewing elusive nocturnal animals like cheetah, and leopards.

Another feature of South Africa is that it is the leader of Inrhino conservation in Africa. From the Kruger to the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, there are many parks that contain both the black and the white rhinoceros.

Have we mentioned that the majority of South Africa is malaria-free? While the Kruger National Park is in a low-risk malaria zone, there are many award-winning places for game viewing that are far away from malaria and other diseases. It is not only the diversity of animals but also the high-quality of service provided by the best African safari companies that make the country stand out.

Why Safari In Namibia

You might find yourself asking how an animal can survive in a country, where most of the land is desolate and arid. However, this doesn’t change the fact that Namibia is home to the largest safari in Africa. Covering almost twenty-two thousand kilometers in the north, the famous Etosha Pan is one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa.

What makes the Etosha Pan so special is the water holes that attract animals. Because the vegetation is thin and the water sources are limited, the animals are exposed as they congregate around the waterholes. That’s why Etosha Pan is one of the easiest places in Africa for tracking and viewing animals.

The wildlife in Namibia has many distinct features, such as the tallest elephants in the world, as well as a considerable number of endangered black rhinos.

Why Safari in Zambia

Tourism in Zambia remained underdeveloped for many years due to the threat of yellow fever and ebola. As soon as the country was cleared of these diseases, tourism took an exponential turn. Yet, Zambia’s wildlife potential remains extremely underrated.

300*252

Zambia’s charmingly diverse vegetation stems from significant climate change throughout the year, which causes fluctuations in the water level of the rivers. Through several floods, the soil in Zambia is rich in minerals and this helps the growth of diverse vegetation. From the big five to thousands of herbivores, all types of animals migrate in and out throughout the year.

The national parks in Zambia are exceptional in walking safaris, which is somehow limited in many other African safari destinations.

Why Safari in Uganda

The last country on our list offers a safari experience that no other country can offer. Besides the abundance of carnivores, herbivores, and birds, Uganda is heaven for primates. The main reason for this is the abundance of water sources throughout the lake region in the south and the Nile basin. As a result, the country boasts vast territories of rainforests suitable for primates.

The highlight of Uganda is the giant mountain gorilla that is becoming closer to extinction every day, but there are also large populations of chimpanzees and rare monkey species such as colobus.

Tour operators organize guided trekking tours through the rain forests, so you can take a closer look at these unique mammals.

Uganda is also special because of the rare and unusual tree-climbing lion species.

African Safaris: FAQs

It really depends on where you are visiting, but there are options for every budget. A budget-friendly safari in tented camps can be as cheap as 120 USD per night. On the other hand, you can expect to pay up to 2000 USD per night at a luxury safari lodge.

According to user reviews; Masai Mara National Park, Kenya Serengeti National Park, Tanzania Kruger National Park, South Africa Chobe National Park, Botswana South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

In general, the dry season is often the best time because the vegetation is thin and animals are forced to gather around water sources. These factors make game viewing much easier.

African safari tours are conducted by experienced guides. The tours don’t dive into the wildlife territory directly, so the animals are mostly calm as long as you follow your guide’s instructions.

African Safaris: Conclusion

Africa is a mystical continent, where nature carries on in perfect harmony. The best way for you to witness the phenomenal wilderness is by joining one of many African safari tours.

Introduction

top 10 safari parks in the world

A safari (Swahili: journey) in one of Africa’s national parks is an exciting thing: many people can observe a larger number of wild animals and even have the opportunity to see the famous Big 5 of Africa .

The focus is on the savannah and bush landscapes, where savannah elephants , lions , buffalos , and other well-known wild animals feel at home.

Whether it’s Africa for the first time or safari connoisseurs, there should be something for everyone. And it attracts attention: There is no best destination in Africa, but there are the best destinations.

So, where should the next safari lead?

10th place: Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Kenya Elephants spotted in the savannah

Where else can wild animals be observed with one of the most famous mountains on earth as a backdrop? The Amboseli National Park at the foot of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania serves both as a postcard motif for Africa and as a photographic object. Giraffes, elephants , and all sorts of other wild animals strut in front of the snow-covered summit of the “Kili” and give great photo motives.

Ancient elephants still live in the park. This allows visitors to observe the almost intact social behavior of the pachyderms in their herds.

The Kilimanjaro usually wraps itself in thick clouds during the day. The chances of seeing it are best in the morning and evening.

9th place: Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa

Addo National Park

Number 9 on the top 10 safari parks in Africa is Addo. Known for, as the name suggests, its elephants, the Addo is more than a convenient destination near South Africa’s Garden Route. The park is home to lions again after a resettlement program; black rhinos and leopards are also found here. Due to the extension to the south, the coast with its sharks and whales is also part of the park, which now advertises with the “Big 7.

In conclusion, the park is ideal for exploring with your own (rental) car. Please make sure to ask in advance what you have to consider for the self-drive safari.

In addition, holidaymakers in their cars should ensure they do not run over pill turners (African dung beetles), hundreds of which run across the roads depending on the weather.

8th Place: Etosha National Park, Namibia

Zebras in Etosha National Park

Namibia’s most important park is home to countless wildlife, including the white and black rhino which are critically endangered, something you can read more about in one of our other articles about these ancient and disappearing creatures. There are also several predatory cat species and many antelopes. “Etosha” means “big white square,” which describes the landscape well. The vegetation is extremely sparse; in the dry season, many animals gather at artificial waterholes.

In the dry season, many animals can easily be observed at the park water holes and camps. 114 different species of mammals live in the park.

Every coin has two sides: The park is completely fenced in and cuts the animals off their original routes in search of water in the Kuene region. The waterholes are not comparable to the actual environment and natural migration behavior for true lovers.

7th place: Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

Giraffe in Tarangire National Park

The Tarangire National Park is one of the most underestimated parts of the continent. Many visitors only make a short stop at the Serengeti or do not even include the national park in their travel plans. But the park is home to large herds of elephants and many other species in a remarkable landscape of baobab trees.

The park is known for its elephant herds, which run through a prehistoric landscape along the Tarangire River.

The park is home to the tsetse fly, which transmits sleeping sickness. Visitors should urgently pay attention to consistent protection.

6th place: Chobe National Park, Botswana

Chobe National Park Zebra Tours

“Land of the Giants” is written on the sign at the park entrance and already announces the park’s main attraction: Elephants, one of the savannah’s most social creatures . Between 80,000 and 100,000 pachyderms are estimated to live in the park and adjacent areas, where they migrate depending on the season.

Botswana pursues an exemplary animal and species conservation policy and no longer kills elephants if they become too numerous for the ecosystem. Instead, fences were dismantled to create more space for the animals. Kaffir buffalos and warthogs are also common. As a result, always check the weather forecast before you go.

A safari with a boat on the Chobe River creates an experience that holiday-makers surely won’t forget easily.

During the high season, the Chobe River can be very narrow.

5th place: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Lions in Zambia

On the Luangwa River, the wilderness awaits no fences, and no radios to communicate with the rangers. Those who travel to the South Luangwa National Park will experience the bush unadorned, without much traffic and wild. It is not uncommon for your own jeep to be the only one at a spectacular sighting, giving visitors more time and peace to enjoy the encounter with the animals. Night safaris and bushwalks, i.e. safaris on foot, are allowed in the national park.

Pure wilderness. The park is known for its hippos and leopards . Many camps are not fenced and often wild animals run through the lodges. The park is also home to numerous endemic species and subspecies, i.e. animals that can only be found here. Sometimes you can even see the endangered Pangolins and the even more threatened Rhinos . Two species of Animals we explore in more detail in another article.

These include the Cookson gnu, the Crawshay zebra and the Thorneycroft giraffe.

The season plays an important role in the South Luangwa National Park. While in the dry season, many large wild animals gather at the water and are so easy to discover, during the rainy season bird lovers get their money’s worth.

4th place: Kruger National Park, South Africa

Cheetahs in Kruger National Park

For most vacationers, the Kruger National Park is the first safari experience in the African bush . It is one of the largest national parks on the continent and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. In contrast to the open savannahs in East Africa, the landscape is bushy and the animals are harder to spot.

This may be described as the best South African Safari.

In the Kruger National Park live some very rare animal species like wild dogs. Another animal worth further exploration in another one of our articles.

The good infrastructure, the developed roads and the fences around the national park make it clear that the park is used and marketed commercially.

This partly causes a lot of traffic in the park and has at some corners only little to do with the real wilderness feeling.

3rd place: Ngorongoro Nature Reserve, Tanzania

Lions in Tanzania

While driving over the edge of the burglary crater into the nature reserve, visitors can rarely suppress the “wow” that involuntarily comes over their lips. The view can take your breath away. The safari through the crater, which has the highest predator density in Africa, becomes the photographic highlight of many African journeys.

The wildlife hike through Masai Mara and Serengeti also touches on the protection of the wildlife.

Overall, the high density of animals naturally attracts many visitors and some have the feeling of driving through an open-air zoo.

Some of the jeeps obstruct the way of the animals or hinder cats of prey during the hunt. Tell your driver that you don’t approve of such behavior.

2nd place: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Wildebeest Migration in Serengeti

Hardly any other national park in Africa is as famous as the Serengeti. This is of course due to the diverse fauna and one of the largest animal migrations in the world .

On the other hand, the Serengeti is almost always threatened: Many people have an interest in the place and in the fertile savannah, on which millions of wild animals cavort and planned large-scale projects would probably mean the end of the national park. The battle for the Serengeti has been fought for decades and culminated in the documentary “Serengeti Must not Die” by Michael Grzimek and his father Bernhard in the 1950s.

The migration of wild animals, where millions of wildebeests, zebras and antelopes travel in a large circle through the Serengeti and the adjoining Masai Mara in Kenya during the course of the year. This is known also as one of the great wildebeest migrations, a topic you can do further reading on with another one of our articles .

The Serengeti is exposed to constant threats. The plans to build a highway through the area are not over yet. There are also frequent conflicts between wildlife and humans.

In addition, organizations are now warning that too many tourists are coming to the park. It is best to drive in the low season and avoid facilities that require a lot of water (swimming pools etc.).

Wide landscape with green hills as far as the eye can see. The view is interrupted only by Wildebeest , zebras, giraffes, Elephants , antelopes , lions , hyenas… The Masai Mara could pass for an African cliché if it were not real.

Word has got around of course that the Masai Mara is a paradise on earth. It is therefore frequently overcrowded and the many cars already have an influence on the behavior of the wild animals. Some cars leave the tracks in search of the best view. If this happens to you, it’s best to tell the driver that you don’t want them to.

The park also serves as a Rhino sanctuary and is home to some 60 white and black rhinos, who are guarded around the clock by armed rangers. An absolute must for rhino fans, who are almost guaranteed to meet some of the animals here.

The impressive Murchison waterfall, where the Victoria Nile plunges over 43 meters into the depths, is also a must-see. The park is home to the endangered Rothschild Giraffes (also Uganda giraffe or Nubian giraffe). To the south of the park is the Budongo chimpanzee forest.

The park is in some places tsetse fly high area. Be sure to take care to protect yourself against insects.

Introduction

A safari (Swahili: journey) in one of Africa's national parks is an exciting thing: many people can observe a larger number of wild animals and even have the oppurtunity to see the famous Big 5 of africa.

The focus is on the savannah and bush landscapes, where savannah elephants , lions , buffalos , and other well-known wild animals feel at home.

Whether it's Africa for the first time or safari connoisseurs, there should be something for everyone. And it attracts attention: There is no best destination in Africa, but there are the best destinations.

So, where should the next safari lead?

10th place: Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Where else can wild animals be observed in front of one of the most famous mountains on earth? The Amboseli National Park at the foot of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania serves both as a postcard motif for Africa and as a photographic object. Giraffes, elephants and all sorts of other wild animals strut in front of the snow-covered summit of the "Kili" and give great photo motives.

Number 9 on the top 10 safari parks in Africa is Addo. Known for, as the name suggests, its elephants, the Addo is more than a convenient destination near South Africa's Garden Route. The park is home to lions again after a resettlement program; black rhinos and leopards are also found here. Due to the extension to the south, the coast with its sharks and whales is also part of the park, which now advertises with the "Big 7".

Namibia's most important park is home to countless wildlife, including the white and black rhino who are critically endangered, something you can read more about in one of our other articles about these ancient and disappearing creatures. There are also several predatory cat species and many antelopes. "Etosha" means "big white square," which describes the landscape well.

The Tarangire National Park is one of the most underestimated parts of the continent. Many visitors only make a short stop at the Serengeti or do not ebaobabven include the national park in their travel plans. But the park is home to large herds of elephants and many other species in a remarkable landscape of boabab trees.

The park is known for its elephant herds, which run through a prehistoric landscape along the Tarangire River.

The park is home to the tsetse fly, which transmits sleeping sickness. Visitors should urgently pay attention to consistent protection.

6th place: Chobe National Park, Botswana

"Land of the Giants" is written on the sign at the park entrance and already announces the park's main attraction: Elephants, one of the savannah's most social creatures .

A safari with the boat on the Chobe river belongs to the experiences, which holiday-makers surely do not forget so fast.

During the high season the Chobe River can be very narrow.

5th place: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

On the Luangwa River, the wilderness awaits: no fences, no radios to communicate with the rangers.

While in the dry season many large wild animals gather at the water and are so easy to discover, during the rainy season bird lovers get their money's worth.

4th place: Kruger National Park, South Africa

For most vacationers the Kruger National Park is the first safari experience in the African bush .

Animals in Vermont

The good infrastructure, the developed roads and the fences around the national park make it clear that the park is used and marketed commercially.

This partly causes a lot of traffic in the park and has at some corners only little to do with the real wilderness feeling.

3rd place: Ngorongoro Nature Reserve, Tanzania

While driving over the edge of the burglary crater into the nature reserve, visitors can rarely suppress the "wow" that involuntarily comes over their lips. The view can take your breath away. The safari through the crater, which has the highest predator density in Africa, becomes the photographic highlight of many Africa journeys.

Tell your driver that you don't approve of such behaviour.

2nd place: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Hardly any other national park in Africa is as famous as the Serengeti. This is of course due to the diverse fauna and one of the largest animal migrations in the world .

The Okavango Delta is lauded one of the world’s best safari destinations for the sheer diversity of wildlife. A glittering oasis in an area dominated by dryness and drought, animals migrate here in their thousands making for an unrivalled density of game. Also setting Okavango apart is the option to conduct your safari on horse or elephant, allowing for access to flooded areas impossible to reach by jeep. Spend time on the water aboard the Kubu Queen houseboat from which you can explore via a dugout canoe, before heading to a luxury lodges in the Moremi Game Reserve, such as Wilderness Safaris Mombo Camp .

Ranthambore Park

Rajasthan, India

While safaris are synonymous with Africa, India has something different to offer. Rather than the famed Big Five, the main event here is the tiger. Head to Sher Bagh Hotel set right on the edge of the Ranthambore National Park and revel in colonial-themed tented bedrooms, a secluded pool and candlelit dinners around the camp fire. With a cap on daily visitors to the park, most tourists are carted around on giant open-sided trucks, which can’t stray from the main paths. A stay at Sher Bagh or the neighbouring Aman-i-Khas bypasses this and allows you private jeep tours of the park with guides who can sniff out a tiger from miles away.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Rwanda, Africa

Shunning jeeps and horses, a safari in Rwanda has you trekking through thick jungle on the lookout troops of gorillas. Further your primate knowledge with a trip to Nyungwe Forest where chimpanzees and monkeys are found. And just in case you get tired of all the monkeying around, Akagera National Park is home to plenty of elephants, giraffes, hippos, and so on. If you’re brave enough, stay at the soon to open Bisate Lodge , a luxury dwelling in the eroded crater of a volcano.

Kruger National Park

South Africa, Africa

With some of the world’s best luxury safari lodges, you’re spoilt for choice in South Africa. Our pick is the Kruger National Park, the country’s largest, where the Big Five are all on show alongside plenty of other mammals and birdlife. Stay in one of the lodges that hug the edge of the main reserve allowing for a more secluded game experience. We’re big fans of the Lion Sands Reserve , where you can book into one of their three treehouses for a night perched under the stars.

Zambezi River

Zambia, Africa

For a truly unique perspective, it can’t get better than canoeing down the Zambezi. Itineraries depend on which operator you book with but on the whole cover two national parks and a total of 160km, with overnight accommodation in old-school pitched tents. This isn’t a trip for the fainthearted; you’ll cover roughly 24km a day on the water with your own guide and as well as canoeing over gorges and rapids, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for game lurking in the bushes. If all that sounds a bit strenuous, opt for a normal land safari and book in for a one-day canoe excursion.

Hwange National Park

Zimbabwe, Africa

After years of political isolation, Zimbabwe, once a firm Africa safari favourite, is getting back on the map. Ahead of the anticipated decline of Mugabe’s influence, some of the country’s best guides are heading back to work on home turf and the first of what is sure to be many safari lodges have launched. Linkwasha Camp lies in its own private section of Hwange National Park, with access to its vast plains and game viewing to rival Africa’s other hotspots but without the crowds. Gonarezhou National Park, for years off limit due to the presence of Mozambican troops, is back in business with Singita lodge offering another option for undisturbed game viewing. Complete your trip with a visit to Victoria Falls and a stay at the revamped Victoria Falls Hotel .

top 10 safari parks in the world

Tanzania, Africa

A safari rite of passage is witnessing the annual migration of wildebeest across the plains. For a front-row seat book into one of Singita’s Grumeti camps, located on a private but vast 350,000-acre estate. With four properties in total, time not spent in a jeep can be whiled away playing billiards, trying your hand at archery or seeking respite in the rejuvenating spa. But if watching the migration is your ultimate goal, book into Singita Explore, a mobile camp that follows the best game viewing by popping up and immersing you in remote locations.

top 10 safari parks in the world

Chile, South America

If you really want to break away from the crowd and subvert the traditional safari connotations, head to deepest, darkest South America and embark on a Patagonian adventure. Straddling Chile and Argentina , this rugged terrain encompasses everything from mountainous peaks, enchanted woodlands and mirrored lakes. Go inland to track the ever-elusive puma, as well as an abundance of native birds, flora and fauna, then head to the coast for orcas, elephant seals and penguins, with plenty of opportunities to hike hiking, kayak or horse ride along the way.

Best Safari Park (2024) March 13, 2024

Safari and wildlife parks allow visitors to get up close and personal with some of the world's most rare and endangered animals. And the most outstanding safari parks — like these 10 that have been selected by an expert panel and voted by readers as the best in the country — aim to educate visitors about the animals and the threats their natural populations face, as well as encourage conservation efforts.

B. Bryan Preserve

No. 10: B. Bryan Preserve - Point Arena, California

The B. Bryan Preserve on California's Mendocino Coast has a mission to breed and preserve African hoofstock. Visitors to this Point Arena wildlife park have the opportunity to observe rare and endangered animals, including antelope, zebra, kudu, and giraffe in large, open fields similar to their natural habitats. Available by reservation only, car safaris and guided tours give visitors an up-close view of each species.

Keystone Safari

No. 9: Keystone Safari - Grove City, Pennsylvania

Keystone Safari, an interactive zoo and adventure park in Grove City, Pennsylvania, is devoted to protecting wildlife, including rare and endangered animals. The 144-acre park has both walk-thru and open-area drive-thru sections where visitors can view animals, including guanacos, donkeys, ponies, Highland cattle, emu, zebras, deer, yak, turkeys, and more.

Bearizona Wildlife Park

No. 8: Bearizona Wildlife Park - Williams, Arizona

Visitors to Bearizona, situated on 160 acres of land near the town of Williams, drive through more than 3 miles of ponderosa pine forest on a safari to see North American animals in natural habitats. After the driving portion of the park, guests can head on foot through Fort Bearizona, where winding walkways lead past smaller animals on exhibit. Guests can interact with animals in the Bearizona Barnyard petting zoo or learn more about the animals on display during daily keeper chats.

Lion Country Safari

No. 7: Lion Country Safari - Loxahatchee, Florida

Palm Beach may be far away from the wilds of Africa, but it’s also home to Florida’s largest drive-through safari, the AZA-accredited Lion Country Safari. Established in 1967, this safari park invites visitors to observe and interact with nearly 1,000 animals divided between seven sections. Guests might spot storks, wildebeest, and impalas on the Serengeti Plains, observe a pride of lions in Gorongosa Reserve, or see giraffes and endangered rhinos in Hwange National Park.

The Wilds

No. 6: The Wilds - Cumberland, Ohio

An AZA-accredited branch of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, The Wilds helps visitors gain a fresh perspective on endangered species through a series of immersive experiences within the nearly-10,000-acre park. Rare and endangered animals from around the globe — particularly Africa and Asia — live in open-range habitats that visitors can explore via open-air safari vehicle.

Safari West

No. 5: Safari West - Santa Rosa, California

A bit of Africa in the heart of California’s wine country, Safari West welcomes guests to the "Sonoma Serengeti," where a 3-hour riding and walking adventure takes them through the 400-acre preserve. Giraffes, zebras, oryx, gazelles, antelopes, buffalo, wildebeest, and many other species number among nearly 900 animals that call the park home. For an even more in-depth safari experience, visitors can choose to stay the night in a luxurious safari tent and fall asleep to the sounds of nocturnal animals.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park

No. 4: San Diego Zoo Safari Park - Escondido, California

At the AZA-accredited San Diego Zoo Safari Park, visitors can observe rhinos with their young, watch an elephant herd splash through a pond, or see lions basking in the sun. A tram transports guests through the 1,800 African-themed acres that more than 300 species call home.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center

No. 3: Fossil Rim Wildlife Center - Glen Rose, Texas

Open to the public since 1984, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center's key mission is to protect and grow the populations of indigenous and exotic endangered and threatened species through captive breeding programs. During their visit, people of all ages can drive along the 7.2-mile Gosdin Scenic Drive to admire these animals in natural settings. Animal species include emus, zebras, rhinoceros, giraffes, and more. At the Children's Animal Center, you can also see tortoises, goats, and macaws.

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge

No. 2: Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge - Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Dedicated to providing a safe haven for abused, abandoned, and neglected big cats, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is a 459-acre sanctuary located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Visitors can view over 100 animals, including lions, tigers, leopards, and bears. Regular admission includes an hour-long tour on their open-air tram and a self-guided Discovery Area. Other experiences offered include behind-the-scenes tours, curator talks, and virtual tours.

Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park

No. 1: Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park - Ashland, Nebraska

An accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park invites visitors to drive along a 4-mile route through habitats populated by native North American plant and animal species, including American elk, bison, waterfowl, and white-tailed deer. At Wolf Canyon, guests can hop out of the car to see grey wolves and American black bears or walk through the half-acre Eagle Aviary.

No less than 4 South African parks have been awarded a top 10 position in the definitive list of Africa's best safari parks . MalaMala, Sabi Sands, Phinda and Kgalagadi all received a top 10 ranking. No other safari country has so many parks in the top 10. An excellent result for South Africa.

SafariBookings.com has published the list of Africa's best safari parks. The list was based on 3,008 park reviews that were collected via the SafariBookings website. Of this total, 2,234 reviews were contributed by safari tourists from more than 60 nationalities. To complement these user reviews, reputable guidebook authors (working for Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Frommer’s, Bradt and Footprint) teamed up in the SafariBookings Expert Panel and wrote another 774 expert reviews.

With a rating of 4.81 stars out of 5, MalaMala Game Reserve ranked second of all parks, topped only by Serengeti National Park. Sabi Sands was awarded the 6 th position, Phinda Game Reseve ranked 7 th , and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park 9 th . Kruger ranked 20 th , which came as a surprise to the SafariBookings team. They expected this top-class park to rank higher.

Demographics of the reviewers (all parks)

  • MalaMala, Sabi Sands and Phinda are all top-class private game reserves. Besides excellent accommodation, food and guiding, these reserves offer superb wildlife viewing with almost guaranteed sightings of the Big Five .
  • Kgalagadi is one of the most rewarding destinations for self-drive visitors; it is off-the-beaten-track with great wilderness appeal and excellent wildlife viewing.
  • Kgalagadi's scenery is stunning; the red sand dunes in the inhospitable desert form a magnificent backdrop for wildlife viewing and photography.
  • The three private reserves offer night drives, walking safaris, and the off-road driving allows close wildlife encounters.
  • Phinda is arguably the best place in Africa to see Cheetahs.
  • MalaMala and Sabi Sands share an unfenced border with Kruger National Park and are part of this enormous eco-system.
  • MalaMala doesn't offer traversing rights to guests from other properties, making it very exclusive and not crowded.

Maasai Mara & beyond: 5 must-see safari parks in Kenya

As a key stop on the Great Migration, the Maasai Mara is one of Africa's biggest draws. But go beyond and you can find quieter parks for budget-friendly ways to spot big cats and more.

Few visitors to Kenya can resist the siren call of its top wildlife-watching area, the Maasai Mara. Its sweeping grasslands — blonde and close-cropped in the dry season, green and earthy after rain — stretch for hundreds of miles. Famous for big cats and the drama of the Great Migration, this is the kind of place where a budding interest in all things safari can develop into an addiction.

During the Great Migration, which visits Kenya between July and September, vast herds of wildebeest and zebras hover nervously on the riverbanks, waiting to cross. Their fear is well-placed: crocodiles lurk in the water, ready to snap. For visitors, witnessing such scenes can be life-changing. But with wildlife in residence all year, the Mara is compelling off-season, too. And, as a bonus, once the milling migrants have finally dispersed, prices tend to plummet.

Partly council-managed, partly community-owned, the Mara is several parks in one. While some camps charge a fortune for an all-inclusive, fly-in experience in a private conservancy, affordable alternatives also exist. If you can stretch to a group tour or a rented 4x4 vehicle, with or without a driver, head west to the delightful and relatively crowd-free Mara Triangle. Here, it’s possible to pitch a tent at a public campsite and let the wilderness work its magic.

The villages of Sekenani or Talek also make good-value bases. Located just outside the main reserve, they’re cheap to reach by matatu (public minibus) or shared taxi from Narok, which is on bus routes from the capital Nairobi. The low-cost camps and guesthouses in these villages organise group drives into the reserve. While many of them deliver an excellent experience, there’s an elephant in the room: the Narok side of the Mara is on the brink of overtourism, with some drivers speeding, jostling on the river banks and bending the official rules about crowding predators. The Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association is a good place to find a trustworthy guide who will avoid this practice.

Alternatives beyond the Mara

In Kenya’s state-run parks, close-to-nature accommodation comes cheap and shares the same territory as the high-end lodges.

1. Nairo bi Best for: a quick warm-up

No other African capital is as blessed with wilderness as Nairobi; its eponymous national park lies on its doorstep and is also an ecological education and research hub, with an exemplary record in protecting rhinos. You can see giraffes, hyenas and even lions here. The Kenya Wildlife Service has no accommodation in the park, but it’s easy to plan day trips from the many low-cost hotels — either in central Nairobi or out of town. How to do it: Park entry is US$43 (£35) per day. Swara Acacia has half-board doubles from US$94 (£75).

2. Tsavo West Best for: lions

Tsavo West National Park is half way between Nairobi and Mombasa in Kenya’s deep south, and elephants, leopards and rhinos can be found here. But it’s the lions that everyone wants to see — descendants of maneless males that once terrorised a group of construction workers. How to do it: Park entry is US$52 (£42) per day. Kenya Wildlife Service campsites cost US$20 (£16) per person. Bandas (self-catering cottages) from US$50 (£40) per person.

A lion footprint in the dirt in Meru National Park.

3. Amboseli Best for: elephants

Mount Kilimanjaro looms above the acacia-dotted grasslands of Amboseli, a national park south of Nairobi. Since 1972 the park has been home to the Amboseli Elephant Research Project — the world’s longest-running study of elephant behaviour in the wild. How to do it: Park entry is US$70 (£55) per day. Kenya Wildlife Service campsites cost US$30 (£24) per person. Bandas cost from US$90 (£71) per person.

4. Meru Best for scenery

If you’re keen to get away from the crowds, try Meru. It’s one of the country’s most under-rated national parks, around a five-hour drive northeast of Nairobi. Cooled by gushing streams, it’s a stronghold for hippos and other animals endemic to East Africa such as long-necked gerenuk antelopes. How to do it: Park entry is US$52 (£42) per day. Kenya Wildlife Service campsites cost US$20 (£16) per person. Bandas cost from US$80 (£64) per person.

Lost Island Waterpark: Waterloo, Iowa

Designed with a tropical island theme, this park in northeastern Iowa mixes high-octane thrills with more relaxed activities. For thrill-seekers, there's the high-speed Wailua Kupua, a hydromagnetic water coaster – meaning it uses power from magnets to push rafts up in the slide. Another exciting option is the intense funnel-shaped Molokini Crater. If you like it calmer, there's a zero-entry wave pool for everyone and the Blue Iguana Lagoon for smaller kids to splash about.

The park also offers mini-golf and go-karts for an extra fee if you tire of the water. For more excitement, buy a combination ticket so you can head to the theme park at the same site.

Where to stay: Less than 2 miles away is the Fairfield Inn & Suites Waterloo Cedar Falls, which offers a good range of amenities like an indoor pool and a fitness center, plus a colorful design scheme in the rooms. Past guests say they appreciated the fresh, abundant free breakfast, too.

Zoombezi Bay: Powell, Ohio

For a water park with a twist, Zoombezi Bay is a fantastic choice. It's owned by the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, and you can enter both the water park and the zoo with the same ticket to enjoy Zoombezi Bay's 17 slides and other rides. For a thrill, you can feel the sensation of weightlessness in the tunnel of Big Boa Falls. Meanwhile, kids can splash and climb through Baboon Lagoon, while parents relax and float down the adults-only Croctail Creek with its swim-up bar.

Where to stay: There are few hotels in the immediate vicinity of Zoombezi Bay, but around 10 miles east lies the top-rated Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel, a Marriott property. With queen beds and hardwood floors, the rooms are both comfortable and stylish. Past visitors note that the whole place, from the grounds to the rooms, is quite beautiful.

Great Wolf Lodge: Multiple Locations

Great Wolf Lodge's indoor water park resorts are notable for their scale and the number of locations. As of early 2024, there are 20 parks, including one in Canada. Other locations are coming soon. The parks vary in size – with the largest (in Perryville, Maryland) clocking in at more than 120,000 square feet – but they share many of the same basic attractions and food. Regardless of location, expect to splash around lazy rivers, wave pools and waterslides in winter-friendly pools heated to 80-plus degrees. (Most parks are indoors, allowing for winter visits.) There are also usually some activities on dry land, too, such as arcade games and bowling.

Where to stay: Great Wolf Lodge locations typically offer accommodations on-site in woodsy suites, allowing for an easy overnight trip. Water park passes are included with accommodations and cover all days of your stay. Various restaurants are offered at most locations, with dining packages available.
