Inside the Jay Flight SLX 184BS

Space, comfort, & decor.

Single axle SLX campers had a 6’1” ceiling before 2021. Newer models, including this 2024 SLX 184BS, are 6’ 6” tall. The 5 extra inches make this camper feel more open and comfortable. Plus, it’s now a great option for taller folks. 

An 8,000 BTU side-mount air conditioner keeps this RV cool. If you’re camping in hot locales, this is the minimum AC power you’d want, but it does the job.  

There is an option to add a 2nd roof-mount AC unit if you’d like a little more cooling power.

The clean, modern decor is a fusion of the best decor options from recent models.

Full Queen Bed & Under Bed Storage

The SLX 184BS has a true, 60” x 80” queen bed. This is not the case for many similar small campers!

The bed also has its own space at the front of the RV with a privacy curtain to separate it from the living and dining spaces. 

The AC unit is near the bed, so a closed privacy curtain keeps air from flowing freely to the rest of the RV. You may want to leave the curtain cracked by your feet while you sleep so your RV mates don’t get too toasty.

You’ll find more storage space beneath the bed. 

There are no struts to help you lift the bed. But, pro-tip, if you’re going to need hands-free access you can use the stabilizer jack as a makeshift solution to prop up the bed. 

Also, good news, you can access this storage space from inside and outside the RV

Kitchen Features

The kitchen is compact, but functions well. You’ll find a 12 volt fridge, microwave, 2-burner stovetop, sink, and still have counter space left to prep your meals. 

There are cupboards, but no drawers in this RV’s kitchen. This may limit how you store utensils and other small kitchen items, so keep it in mind as you shop. 

There are drawers beneath the dinette and below the fridge. These drawers may provide enough space, it just depends what you need to bring along.

Living/Dining Slide

The dinette slide adds a lot more room for comfortable dining and moving around the RV without adding a lot of extra weight to your RV. 

It is designed for a family of 4. 2 adults and 2 kids should be pretty comfortable around the table. It also converts into extra sleeping space.

The tabletop is very stable with strong wall bracket supports and a single post. This design leaves more legroom than similar RVs that use 2 posts. Since most of us RVers do indeed have legs, this is a lovely improvement.

I don’t know about you, but when I camp, I usually bring stuff with me. The storage space beneath the dinette is helpful in this compact space.

If you expect rainy days or spending much time inside the RV you may want a TV. There is a space prepped for a TV across from the dinette, so you can decide whether or not adding one is worth it to you. Not sure about a slide? Jayco has your back. If you can manage with less space and a smaller dinette, you can save a little money and weight with the Jay Flight SLX 174BH . It’s a similar RV without the slide.

Bunks: Putting the B in 184BS

• Each bunk is rated to hold 300 lbs. Similar size/floor plan RVs can be rated as low as 120 lbs. Whatever bunk house you choose, check the rating to know who is safe to sleep there. 
• USB plug-ins for the top bunk and household electrical outlets on the bottom. 
• No top bunk window: Keep this in mind if the extra airflow is important for your bunk sleepers. 
• No privacy curtain. In a camper this small you can expect to share space, so for many this isn’t a big deal. A curtain would block air flow to the bunks. But, if privacy is a must, we get it. Connect with an RV outfitter for help finding something different.

Bathroom With Space to Move

• Tub/Shower combo with surround paneling. This is particularly helpful to keep water and moisture inside the tub area.
• Skylight above the shower gives a little space for taller RVers and brightens the bathroom space. When you step up into the shower pan a lot of taller folks will run out of space. The light gives you a little more room.
• The toilet space is well designed and leaves enough room for bigger campers to have some elbow space.
• There is not a powered vent in this bathroom. There is a light near the vent, so you could piggyback off the electricity to upgrade your fan if it’s important for you. There is also what Josh the RV Nerd calls a “Peak-a-boo-I-smell-you door” on the bathroom. This means it leaves a gap between the door and ceiling. 
• Bathroom Storage: There is no storage in this bathroom. If you want it, you’ll have to add your own.

AC & Solar Prep

Air Conditioning: The RV comes with a side-mount air conditioner (8,000 BTU). You may also be able to add a roof-mount unit for extra oomph. 

Solar Prep: The RV is prepped for solar and a solar charge controller. The optional factory solar package includes 200 watts of solar power and a 30 amp charge controller. This setup should be enough to power the 12-volt fridge as long as you get enough sun. Of course tree coverage and whatnot will affect how effective your solar is.

• Ready for solar: Prep point for a solar charge controller 
• Storage access: You can get to the under bed storage from outside this RV.
• Keyed Alike System: The RV has a keyed alike system for security and convenience. Any key can be used for any lock. Entry door and storage? One key. 
• Outdoor Awning. It’s not big, but it fits the scale of this RV. 
• Gas grill cooker hook-up (propane hookup) for outdoor cooking.
• Reverse travel lighting comes standard
• Tankless on-demand water heater
• Ladder Prep and Walkable Roof: The RV is prepped for a telescopic removal ladder, with a walk-on roof for maintenance and recreational use.
• Tinted windows for privacy and to reduce heat from sunlight.

Towing & Travel Access

What do you need to tow a jay flight slx.

To tow the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 184BS, you’ll need a vehicle that has a towing capacity that’s higher than the RV’s fully loaded weight of 4,500 pounds. It’s important to consider not just the base weight of the RV but its GVW to ensure safe and efficient 

You should be able to tow this with

• A large SUV with a towing package.
• A light to medium-duty pickup truck. Trucks like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, or Ram 1500, when properly equipped, are suited for a trailer of this weight.

Always check the specific towing capacity of the vehicle model and year to make sure it’s a good fit. 

Remember, it’s not just about the ability to tow the weight. Consider factors like the vehicle’s braking capacity, engine power, and stability control features too, so you have a safe towing experience.

Access With the Slide Closed

The Jayco Jay Flight SLX 184BS travel trailer stands out for its excellent travel functionality when the slide-out is closed. It’s as functional as the SLX 175BH without a slide. You’ll have full access to the bunks, bathroom, and kitchen. This is very helpful during quick stops or situations where extending the slide-out isn’t possible. 

Note: Keep the bed curtain on the mattress when you put the slide in so it doens’t get tangled in the slide mechanism.

• No bed lifting mechanism. You’ll have to lift the bed yourself to get to the storage below. 
• Size : this compact trailer has less space to move about than a larger model

• Find a Location

7 Lofty RVs For Tall People

Fifth wheels with high ceilings are more common in the world of towables, with interior heights often extending up to seven to eight feet. With travel trailers, interior heights over 6.5 feet are harder to find. Many traditional travel trailers have a 6’5” interior height, but among some small campers, the headroom is even shorter.  

For this list, we’ve targeted travel trailers with interior heights of 6’6” or taller. We’ve also included a few hybrids that might make you reconsider a traditional travel trailer. We start with the Cherokee Alpha Wolf and a few other brands that offer travel trailers under 7 feet tall. 

Cherokee Alpha Wolf (6’6”)

Coming in at 6’6”, the Cherokee Alpha Wolf lineup from Forest River is a great baseline if you are looking for an RV for tall people. Choose from ten models, all at this elevated height. Below are some added benefits you get with a higher vaulted ceiling. 

Overhead Storage

This is a common feature in RVs with taller ceilings because the added height allows for more space to lengthen the overhead storage. When touring tall-ceiling RVs, pay attention to how much they utilize the added height for overhead storage. 

Shower Accessibility

The shower is a common issue for tall people in short-ceiling travel trailers. There’s simply not great clearance with the showerhead. The Alpha Wolf travel trailers provide more general headroom and also include a skylight in their showers, so tall travelers will have an easier time. 

Bunk Clearance

Several of the Alpha Wolf floorplans include a double-over-double bunk area in the rear of the trailer. Bunks are great for families with kids, but unfortunately, some travel trailer bunkhouses are designed just for that—kids, not adults. The increased height on the Alpha Wolf expands those bunk clearances to make them more comfortable for adults than in RV bunks with a shorter ceiling. 

Keystone Outback (6’6”)

The Keystone Outback travel trailers have an exterior height of over 11 feet, with their tallest unit coming in at 11’6”, making them among the taller travel trailers. This exterior height translates to more interior height with 6’6” barrelled ceilings at the center. Choose from nine floorplans. Below are the unique features of the taller Outbacks. 

Slide-out Height

While slide-outs always help a room feel bigger, you typically lose a lot of interior height in the slide-out section. For the Outback? Not so. The Keystone Outback slide-outs offer an impressive six-foot clearance, leaving these living areas plenty of headroom.

Bigger Windows

Tour the inside of a Keystone Outback and you’ll note the expansive panoramic windows. The added height and large windows make the floorplans feel more open and residential.

With a skylight, the showers inside the Outbacks are roomy and spacious, with plenty of headroom. 

Heartland Mallard (6’8”)

Heartland Mallard ups the ante of RVs for tall people with a total of 12 units, all with ceilings at a formidable 80 inches tall. Uniquely, Mallard offers this extended interior height even on its most compact units, as short as 22 feet. If you have a smaller tow vehicle but don’t want to miss out on taller interior heights, a Mallard may be right for you. 

Barrel Ceiling

While the Outbacks have a barreled ceiling, this really shines on the Mallard due to the considerable increase in height. Barreled ceilings indicate that the center ceiling will likely be at least a few inches taller than normal. 

Slide-out Fascia

Heartland incorporates a flat, thick natural-wood slide-out fascia that resembles a support beam rather than the faux crown molding you often see on slide-outs. This contributes to the interior’s overly open and sturdy feel, which is made possible with the added clearance.

You’ll also see many of the same tall-friendly features across the Mallards as other barrel ceiling units: 

• High storage
• A tall shower with additional skylight clearance
• More headroom on bunk-model floorplans 

If you aren’t a taller individual and wonder what kind of difference a higher ceiling would make, maybe the Mallards are the right intermediate level for you. The great thing about Mallards is that Camping World keeps a good inventory of these popular units, and you can often find them at our dealerships.

Now, let’s check out a few 7 foot tall travel trailers.

Keystone Sprinter Limited (7’0)

With our tallest ceilings yet, the Keystone Sprinter Limited RVs make ideal campers for tall people with an interior height of seven feet flat, or 84 inches. As a bonus, these Keystone travel trailers also boast wide-body construction, coming in at 100” and giving you an additional four inches of width compared to traditional eight-foot construction. Here are a couple of features that come with the tall interior. 

Each 2024 Keystone Sprinter Limited travel trailer includes slide-outs in the living space and the primary bedroom, among other locations. The best part is that Keystone offers an impressive 6-foot clearance on the slide-outs in this lineup.

Large Windows

Like the Outbacks, the Sprinter Limited travel trailers’ large panoramic windows add an open feeling to the living space, which is only heightened by the tall ceilings.

Crown Molding

With the extra interior clearance, Keystone incorporates crown molding along the top of the walls, which gives these units a more elegant look. In this case, when it looks taller, it actually is taller. 

Jayco Eagle (7’0)

Jayco Eagle travel trailers offer similar clearances to the Sprinter Limited in seven total floorplans. The interior height of each Jayco Eagle travel trailer comes in at seven feet even, ranking among the tallest ceilings on a traditional travel trailer. 

These Jaycos feature overhead storage above the primary bed at the nose of each unit. Many also have a rear living space with overhead storage above the sofa or a U-shaped dinette. 

Extra Tall Shower

On the Jayco Eagles, you’re looking at a tall shower made even taller with a skylight for an improved bathing experience. We also love the marbled design of these spacious showers for a uniquely Jayco touch of luxury. 

Grand Design Momentum G Series (7’8”)

Now, we’re changing things up and introducing a cheat code for RVs for tall people: the toy hauler option. Smaller toy hauler travel trailers offer the maneuverability of a traditional travel trailer while giving you about as much headroom as you could want. 

The Grand Design Momentum G-Class toy haulers have taller ceilings—over 7.5 feet—to accommodate the garage space. Let’s explore how this extra clearance impacts the layout.  

Garage Drop-Down Bed

Many of the Momentum garages feature a queen-sized mattress that lowers for additional sleeping on top of the foldout bench seats, providing comparable sleeping capacity to many bunkhouse travel trailers . 

Super Tall Shower

The Momentums have enough shower headroom, so even the tallest person in your group will have no problem. 

Additional Storage

The allure of toy haulers is their capacity to stow and transport toys like four-wheelers, dirt bikes, kayaks , and inflatable hot tubs. These Momentum toy haulers also have ample storage space with cabinets that fully utilize the taller ceilings.

Timberwolf Mini Loft (Over 13’)

Okay, now we may be cheating. But if you’re interested in a travel trailer with a tall ceiling, don’t dismiss these shorter, more agile destination trailers. The Timberwolf Mini Lofts are shorter and lighter than most destination trailers but feature super-tall ceilings and residential features that give them a leg up for full-time living compared to traditional travel trailers. 

The interior of the Timberwolf 16ML, for example, comes in at over 13 feet tall. Let’s look at some features that are made possible by that expansive interior height.  

Residential Living

The interior looks and feels more like a tiny home than a recreational vehicle. The added space creates room for a high-top table across from sofa seating in a living room with rear sliding doors that step out onto a covered patio. Plus, the kitchen boasts an upgraded appliance package with a dishwasher, ice maker, and more. 

Lofted Sleeping Locations

Designed more like a fifth wheel, the Mini Lofts provide dual lofts that allow up to five people to sleep in this smaller unit. The lofted design also keeps those sleeping spaces separate from the living and kitchen areas, providing coveted privacy in a trailer under 30 feet .

Overhead Fan

The Mini Lofts feel much more residential. With the tall ceilings, there is even room for a ceiling fan for additional airflow and cooling. 

Travel Trailers for Tall Guys

So, what are the best travel trailers for tall guys? Here are a few guiding principles as you search RVs beyond this list. Look for the following: 

• Barrel ceiling designs
• Tall slide-outs
• Decorative fascia and molding 
• Open-concept toy hauler travel trailers
• More agile mini loft or destination trailers

Finding the RV Perfect for Our Family

We didn’t just want to travel in our RV— we wanted to homeschool our kids out of it, make home-cooked meals in its kitchen, have family movie nights and epic Lego-building competitions, and create lasting family memories within its walls. In short, we wanted a space that felt like a home. A usable and inviting living area was of utmost importance for our home-on-wheels, and the opposing slide-outs in the kitchen and living areas of the Jay Flight created just that. 

The Kitchen

The double slides also make room for one of our favorite features of the RV; a large kitchen island. This kitchen proves you don’t need a large kitchen, only a well-laid-out kitchen. It isn’t unusual for cookies to be prepared on one end of the island, potatoes being chopped on the other, and a kid working on math problems in between.  

All this cooking and eating can’t happen without someplace to store the food, and this RV layout comes in clutch with one of the biggest pantries we’ve ever seen. With over 24 cubic feet of storage, this pantry makes keeping our large crew fed and happy so much easier. We can also shop at our favorite bulk stores, saving us money and time. 

The Classroom

When the dream of roadschooling and the reality of educating five kids on the road collide, it's necessary to have a space that creates structure. The open living space of the Jay Flight provides many areas to sit, curl up, or lounge while completing the day's educational pursuits. It also offers enough storage to hold the myriad of items a homeschooling family accumulates.

The Bunkroom

Past the kitchen and the living space is the bunkroom with three beds and a jackknife sofa which can easily sleep four people. With a wardrobe, underbed drawers, and cabinets above and below the entertainment center, there’s even enough space to store all the items needed for four people as well. This bunkroom checked every box for us and has become a cozy and personalized space for our children. 

The Bathroom

Heading toward the primary bathroom on the other end of the living room is the bathroom. The corner shower and angled vanity maximize the usability of the space and are big enough for multiple children to brush their teeth and hose off sandy feet at the same time. The six-gallon water does a good job of keeping up with our staggered shower rotation, and with a bit of planning, keeps all of us as clean as we want to be. With an 80-gallon fresh water tank, a 70-gallon gray water tank, and a 40-gallon black water tank, we can dry-camp (boondock) for multiple days. 

The Living & Entertainment Areas

While outdoor adventure is our main game, we do enjoy a competitive round of Mario Kart or a few episodes of The Amazing Race curled up on the couch. The angled entertainment center allows everyone to see whatever antics are playing on the TV. Whether they are popping popcorn in the kitchen, sketching at the table, or even lounging on one of the bunks in the back bedroom, everyone has a good view of our entertainment of choice. The Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS also comes with a fireplace underneath the entertainment center, and we may have to go with that option when we upgrade!

With so many great features and amenities, one might think the 33RBTS must be massive and heavy. It isn’t! Measuring in at just under 38 feet total length, and with a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of under 11,000 pounds, this trailer can be pulled by a variety of modern pickup trucks and heavy-duty Sport Utility Vehicles. 

We have traveled coast to coast multiple times, hauling it with a diesel Excursion and a Dodge Ram 2500, logging many thousands of miles and even more memories.
