One city in Germany is getting ready to say “Guten tag!” to Taylor Swift , with officials moving to temporarily rename Gelsenkirchen “Swiftkirchen” in honor of the pop star’s upcoming trio of Eras Tour shows in the locale.

“It’s a great idea to temporarily rename Gelsenkirchen to ‘Swiftkirchen,’ which is why I’m particularly pleased that you can experience the short-term ‘renaming’ of Gelsenkirchen live and up close in Gelsenkirchen today,” said Mayor Welge in a thank-you letter to Westhoff.

Swiftkirchen will also be complete with a series of “Taylor Town” festivities on the days of the pop star’s shows, featuring karaoke, a DJ set, a tattoo stand, marketplace and food and drink vendors. “As mayor, I am of course very happy that Taylor Swift, currently the most successful singer in the world, will be performing three times in Gelsenkirchen,” added Welge in a statement.

Gelsenkirchen isn’t the only city that’s gone all out for Swift’s Eras Tour visits in the past year-plus, nor is it the first to temporarily rename itself in her honor. Ahead of the 14-time Grammy winner’s kickoff performances in 2023, Glendale, Ariz., went by “Swift City,” while Minneapolis transformed into “Swiftie-apolis” and Santa Clara, Calif., was decreed “Swiftie Clara” that summer.

Swift still has a few more stops to make before she reaches Gelsenkirchen, starting with three nights in Amsterdam July 4-6. She’ll then perform two nights in Zürick followed by another duo of shows in Milan.

A city in Germany will temporarily be renamed after singer-songwriter Taylor Swift ahead of her upcoming Eras Tour stop in the country. Instead of Gelsenkirchen, the city will temporarily go by “Swiftkirchen.”

“The city of Gelsenkirchen is looking forward to welcoming U.S. mega-star Taylor Swift and the tens of thousands of Swifties who are expected to attend the three concerts in the arena from July 17th to 19th,” mayor Karin Welge wrote in a Tuesday statement , translated by Google. Swift’s trio of Gelsenkirchen concerts are set for July 17-19.

The city’s name change was the result of a suggestion from a fan named Aleshanee Westhoff after they started a petition and reached out to the mayor.

“It’s a great idea to temporarily rename Gelsenkirchen to ‘Swiftkirchen’, so I’m particularly pleased that you can experience the short-term ‘renaming’ of Gelsenkirchen live and up close in Gelsenkirchen today,” Welge said in her response letter to Westhoff.

On top of the new name, the city’s public relations department shared that it will be “installing many more signs in highly frequented places in Gelsenkirchen in the coming days.”

On the Gelsenkirchen public website, Welge said she’s overjoyed by the idea.

“As mayor, I am of course very happy that Taylor Swift, currently the most successful singer in the world, will be performing three times in Gelsenkirchen,” she said. “International attention will therefore be back on our city.”

Other amendments around the city include a “Taylor Swift tram,” a “Taylor Town” party and a stone for Swift on Gelsenkirchen’s Walk of Fame.

BERLIN — The Swifties are about to take over the German city formerly known as Gelsenkirchen, where American superstar Taylor Swift is set to give three Eras Tour concerts later this month.

In honor of the singer, the city has renamed itself “Swiftkirchen” — at least temporarily — to welcome the tens of thousands of fans who are expected to come for her shows on July 17, 18 and 19, German news agency dpa reported.

A yellow city sign with the new name — which translates roughtly to “Swift’s Church” — was unveiled Tuesday by Swift fan Aleshanee Westhoff, who suggested the name to the city’s mayor and started a petition a few weeks ago. Mayor Karin Welge thanked the teenager for her “great idea” in a letter accepting the proposal.

The Swiftie sign has been emblazoned with a pink portrait of the pop icon and is located in the city center. Several more signs “at highly frequented locations in Gelsenkirchen” will be put up in the coming days, city spokesman Markus Schwardtmann told dpa.

One of the poorest cities in Germany, Gelsenkirchen is a former coal mining town that’s never recovered from the decline of its main industry. The Ruhr city is known for its soccer team, and a massive stadium that occasionally attracts international entertainers like Swift.

And there’s more to come in Germany’s Swiftie town.

The U.S. singer will also receive her own stone on the Gelsenkirchen Walk of Fame, alongside local notables like soccer coach Rudi Assauer and writer Ilse Kibgis, and during her concerts, the city will host open-air parties with karaoke performances. A “Taylor Swift streetcar” is already up and running, dpa reported.

Further fan attractions are being planned but kept secret for the time being. “There will be lots of big and small surprises so that the Swifties have plenty to discover in Gelsenkirchen,” Schwardtmann said.

Swift’s concerts in Gelsenkirchen are sold out and will take place at the Veltins-Arena on Schalke stadium, which has space for up to 70,000 Swifties. Further Eras Tour shows are planned for Hamburg and Munich.

• Tour This is a catch-all term that implies a type of travel experience that takes place over time, generally visiting multiple sights. It could last 1 hour or 30 days, and be done as a walk, or in vehicle. It could be a solo traveler or a group of 50 people. Other words might be used to describe the same thing:  tour, experience, journey, excursion , etc. It usually implies something organized, either by the traveler themselves, or a tour operator, who designs and delivers a tour for a traveler or group of travelers.
• Guest/Customer/Client/Passenger/Participant/Traveler Thanks to Disney,  guest  is what we generally use to refer to our customers. Why the difference? “Customer” implies a financial relationship, whereas  guest  relates more to a personal connection and a sense of welcome and hospitality. But it’s the same as customer, passenger (PAX), traveler, etc., and different companies will prefer different terminology.
• Guide / Tour Guide / Tourist Guide “tour guide” is used more often in Anglophone countries, especially in the U.S., whereas “Tourist Guide” is used in Europe and elsewhere globally.
• Tour Leader/Tour Director/Tour Manager/Tour Escort/Trip Leader This role goes by many different names. It refers to a guide who works over multiple days, usually traveling with a group of guests to multiple cities or regions. In addition to delivering commentary about the locations visited, a tour leader also handles the tour logistics, including working with the motor coach driver, staying on schedule, checking into hotels, meals and activities on time. 
• Interpreter A guide working often at National Parks or heritage sights; interpretation theory is a 100-year old body of theoretical work focused on strategies for helping individuals make their audience connect with and care for the site that’s being interpreted.
• Docent The name sometimes used for a guide usually in a museum or cultural heritage sight.
• Day Tour A type of experience that begins and ends in the same day. Usually used to distinguish an experience from a multi-day tour.
• Multi-Day Tour Any type of experience that lasts for more than one day. Often includes hotels, meals, short activities, and a form of transportation.
• Package Tour A kind of experience (usually multi-day) in which several different components are bundled together: it may or may not include airfare, hotels, guided experiences, meals, etc.
• Group Tour You’ll see these terms used differently to a kind of experience in which separate individuals or smaller groups come together to share an experience. Group tours can be  public  or  private .
• Public Tour As the name implies, this is a tour that’s open to the general public to sign up. The tour therefore consists of a variety of people who don’t already know each other. A public tour is usually offered at a set time and day.
• Private Tour A tour that is sold specifically to an already-organized group of travelers who don’t wish to experience the tour with others. A private tour might be a couple, a small group of friends, or a large church group. Private tours might be at a set time, or organized according to group’s specific needs.
• Custom Tour A custom tour is usually also a private tour.  Custom  refers to the operator crafting an experience customized to the specific demands of a client. A tour operator might be engaged by a client to design a unique experience, for one person or a large group.
• Pre-Formed/Affinity Group These are commonly used terms in the multi-day tour space to refer to a group tour not made up of individual solo travelers & couples, but instead of an alread-formed large group of travelers. An “affinity group” shares a common trait—they belong to a church, a retirement community, or a family reunion traveling together, for example. A pre-formed group might also be created by a “Group Leader” who sells a tour  for  a tour operator ,  often in exchange for a free trip or a commission.
• Escorted Tour Used most often in the multi-day tour space, an escorted tour means you’re traveling with an escort (old fashioned term), more commonly referred to today as a tour manager, tour director, tour leader, or trip leader. The TM’s job is to handle the logistics of keeping the group together, checked into hotels, arranging meals, etc. They work  for  the tour operator.
• Guided Tour In short, an organized excursion led by an individual or individuals. “Tour Guide” is the generalized term, but a guide could be a museum “docent” or an adventure guide, tour leader, etc.
• Self-Guided Tour This has two different meanings, one related to technology, one related to nature. When talking about mobile phone apps, a self-guided tour is one usually done in-destination using audio recordings and GPS data to guide an individual along a tour route, sharing recorded stories. In the world of adventure tours, a self-guided tour happens when an individual hires a tour operator to provide guidance in the form of itineraries, maps, possibly technology, all to facilitate an extended journey involving walking, hiking, biking, etc.
• FAM Tour A “familiarization” tour, focused on helping one set of professionals (travel agents, for example) learn about a destination, or about vendors in an area. A group of tour guides might take a FAM tour to a new attraction that opened in town, to become familiar with it. A group of travel agents might sign up for a FAM to a destination that they’ll then sell to clients.
• FIT Tour Very confusing term. It’s evolved over time. It once meant “foreign independent travel” but now is more often thought of as “flexible independent travel.” The goal is to distinguish this kind of independent traveler from someone who buys into a packaged group tour. FIT is more associated with a client who engages with a travel agent or operator to design something that suits their specific customized needs. 
• Activity An activity is usually different than a tour in that it is less about guided sightseeing and more about doing something, well, activity based. Examples might be watersports, biking, hiking, etc.
• Attraction Think amusement parks, museums, and the Eiffel Tower. What do they all have in common? They require tickets, they’re single place-based experiences, and rather than do them in groups, thousands of people pour in at once, with no specific booked time requirements (unless doing so for crowd control or pandemic related reasons).
• “Tours & Activities Industry” This is just one of many ways to talk about our industry. You’ll also hear Tours, Attractions & Activities, 
• DMO/CVB/Tourism Board A Tourism Board or Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) or Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) are all essentially the same thing. — an organization (public, private, or a mix) whose goal it is to promote a destination, be it a city, region or country. Examples include  NYC & Company  and  Visit Scotland .
• MICE Pronounced like the animal, stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events. From a tour perspective, this is where an operator might work with a CVB (see above) to organize tours for business customers hosting or attending a conference in a location. Incentive tours are reward experiences that a company offers a group of employees.
• B2B Tour operators who work with other operators 

Types of Tour Operators

• Tour Operator A business that organizes and sells tours. They sell to a customer, and possibly work with vendors (hotels, restaurants, vehicle companies, etc.) to create an organized tour experience. In short, operators do the grunt work.
• Travel Agent/Agency In general, an agency works with travelers, and books travel components to relieve the traveler’s burden of figuring it out on their own. An agency might book a tour operator’s tour as part of the services they provide the travel, in exchange for a commission from the operator.
• [insert word here]  Operator Tour Operator is a general term, but that’s not the only kind of operator out there. You might also be an adventure operator, watersports operator, ATV rental operator, you name it. But in all cases, you’re not an agency booking someone else’s service, you’re providing the service yourself.
• Day (or Multi-Day) Tour Operator Both are subsets of “tour operators” in general. It might be used in the Tourpreneur community when we’re referring to the specific challenges of a specific kind of operator, since the products and challenges of each type of tour can be very different.
• Inbound / Receptive Operator /  DMC (destination management company) These are all versions of the same thing, with terminology that is sometimes preferred over the other words for various reasons. This kind of tour operator creates experiences in a certain location (often a specific city or a region or country), working B2B with tour operators or corporate entities needing local knowledge and connections.  Receptive operator  is an older term meaning they “receive” clients who are coming in (or inbound) from somewhere else.
• Outbound Operator This version of tour operator (usually multi-day) designs experiences that take guests elsewhere. An outbound operator might be based somewhere (Australia, for example) but focus on creating trips that send their Australian customers outbound to other countries.

Sales, Marketing & Software Terms

• SEO Search Engine Optimization—the art of optimizing your website and online presence to bring your content to the top of search engine results (principally Google).
• PPC Means “Pay-per-click” and references the kind of digital advertising done by companies like Google: you create an advertisement to appear in search engine results, for example, and you pay for that ad a specific market rate each time someone clicks on your link.
• OTA Online Travel Agency—this is a catch-all term for a wide variety of online marketplaces servicing the travel industry, selling everything from rental cars to flights to hotels to tours. An OTA in the general industry might refer to big players like Expedia or Booking.com; in the tour industry, it refers to companies like Viator (the largest tour OTA) and GetYourGuide. There is a long tail of “niche OTAs” that serve specific types of tours and activities (like watersports) or a specific region.
• Online Marketplace / Platform This is a more general term for the kind of website platform (like Viator) that sells a wide variety of tours online. Think Guide Marketplaces like ToursByLocals or Withlocals, companies that curate large amounts of guides, but aren’t traditional OTAs like viator.
• Restech/Booking Software You’ll hear “restech” (alternately reztech, rez-tech, etc…) as a fast way to refer to the software industry centered around creating helping tour operators accept online bookings, and keep those bookings organized. The largest companies in this space work mainly with day tour operators.
• Tour Operator Software Different than booking software/restech, TO software offers an extended suite of features meant to help operators across their whole business, from operators to itinerary proposals to budgeting and pricing. This software may include a booking/payment component, but is a much more fully integrated and holistic (and expensive) solution.
• SaaS Short for “Software as a Service” — this is how the tech industry refers usually subscription-based websites or software that help you do something. Examples of SaaS include booking software and CRMs.
• Supplier In the language of selling tours to customers on a platform, tour operators are suppliers; you  supply  tours that are then  re-sold  by the platform.
• Connectivity This is the dark art of how you, the operator (supplier) connect to sales channels.
• Distributor/Reseller These are sales channels that sell tickets to your tours on behalf of you. They could be everything from an online marketplace like Viator and GetYourGuide, to a personal travel agent or hotel concierge..
• Channel Manager This is software that helps you manager all your different sales channels in one place.

No, you can't shoot July 4th fireworks in the City of Pensacola. Here's why.

Independence Day is on a weekday again this year, and many people are stocking up on fireworks around Escambia County to prepare for big family get-togethers to showoff their at-home fireworks show on the Fourth of July .

But, even though a 2020 Florida amendment designates Independence Day as a "firework holiday," those wishing to launch their own fireworks show in the city limits of Pensacola may be stuck with a civil fine due to ordinances grandfathered in prior to the new legislation.

Here's everything you need to know about launching fireworks in Pensacola and Escambia County.

How does Florida define fireworks?

According to Florida law , fireworks are “any combustible or explosive composition or substance or combination of substances … prepared for the purpose of producing a visible or audible effect by combustion, explosion, deflagration, or detonation.”

Basically, that includes anything that flies, visibly explodes and/or audibly goes boom with the notable exception of  sparklers , cap guns, smoke bombs, cigarette loads, party poppers and snappers, which were already legal to use in Florida.

Are fireworks legal in Florida?

Sometimes. Noisy or projectile fireworks are illegal in Florida, but a 2020 Florida law established three fireworks “holidays” when they are allowed: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and Independence Day, unless prohibited by local ordinance.

Floridians are also permitted to purchase and set off fireworks year-round provided they are used "solely and exclusively in frightening birds from agricultural works and fish hatcheries." That's why when Floridians go to fireworks tents throughout the year they must sign waivers affirming that they're only buying a cartload of "Excalibur Platinum Artillery Shells" to scare away crows or something similar.

Can I shoot fireworks in the City of Pensacola?

Short answer — no. If you live within the city limits, it is unlawful to discharge fireworks.

Even though Florida Statutes permit firework use on the three "firework holidays," it also grandfathered in existing local laws and ordinances such as the city's ordinances.

"It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge or explode in or upon any street, public way or park within the city, or upon any private premises within the city, any fireworks ... unless the discharging or exploding be performed under the direction, supervision and control of the city and a permit has been issued by the city," Pensacola ordinance 14-3-68 states.

Pensacola's city ordinances allow the use of sparklers within the city limits.

Can I shoot fireworks in Escambia County?

If you live outside of the City of Pensacola, launching fireworks is legal — only on designated holidays.

Although Escambia County has instituted an ordinance that prohibits the launch of fireworks within the county, much like Pensacola's, Escambia's Public Information Officer for Public Safety Davis Wood told the News Journal the county suspends the fireworks ordinance on all three designated holidays.

Be wary, though. Escambia County's daily noise ordinance remains in effect, so if your neighbors complain, law enforcement may show up at your door.

Escambia County's noise ordinance begins at 10 p.m. each day and lasts until 7 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends. This ordinance prohibits loud noises that include but are not limited to noise emanating from loudspeakers or amplifiers, yelling and shouting or animals and birds.

What are the penalties for launching fireworks in the City of Pensacola?

Pensacola's city ordinances state any violation may result in a fine not to exceed $500, a term of imprisonment not exceeding 60 days or both. However, Pensacola Police Department spokesperson Officer Mike Wood says the department's "rule of thumb is to confiscate fireworks, and that's about as far as we take it."

"We've never had to go beyond that," he told the News Journal.

Wood said if someone reports the launching of fireworks, officers will ask the individuals to stop. If they refuse, then Wood says that's when fireworks will be confiscated.

How late at night can I set off fireworks?

Let's say you decide to launch fireworks despite the city's ordinances. Your neighbors may be fine with the noise unless it keeps them up at night, especially since the day after Independence Day is a work day.

The City of Pensacola has a noise ordinance that takes effect each day at 11 p.m. and lasts until 7 a.m. During these times, any loud or "raucous noise" that "annoys, disturbs, injures or endangers the comfort, repose, health, peace or safety of reasonable persons of ordinary sensibilities within the limits of the city" is prohibited.

Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum

Voted the best patriotic attraction by USA Today , the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum offers an immersive experience of the 1773 Boston Tea Party. Begin your tour in the museum’s Meeting House, where a costumed guide portraying Samuel Adams sets the revolutionary scene. Aboard replicas of 18th-century ships, you can relive the historic event by throwing tea overboard. Witness a 3D reenactment of the ensuing debate between a Patriot and a Loyalist at Griffin’s Wharf. Don’t miss seeing the original tea chest, which traces its journey from China to Boston Harbor over two centuries ago.

For refreshments, visit Abigail’s Tea Room & Terrace, where you can enjoy some of the original teas thrown into the harbor in 1773, along with a selection of freshly baked goods. Open to the public, the tea room does not require a general admission ticket.

Boston Navy Week

Running through July 7, Boston Navy Week is a unique opportunity to meet members of the US Navy during special events and activities. This is the first time since 2012 that Boston and surrounding communities will host Navy Week, bringing between 50 and 75 sailors on shore. Each day, you can attend STEM presentations, fitness demonstrations, and learn about the history of the US Navy.

In addition to the Navy Week events, the USS Constitution Museum will host activities like mini-golf, cannon drills, and a tattoo program, where you can learn about sailors’ tattoos and get a temporary one yourself. The National Park Service will offer activities at the Charlestown Navy Yard, including a chance to explore the USS Cassin Young and engage with the Navy Dive Team on July 3 and 4.

Thursday, July 4

Flag-raising ceremony and parade.

Kick off the most patriotic day of the year bright and early at City Hall Plaza with the city’s flag raising ceremony and parade at 9 am. From there, the parade proceeds past the Granary Burial Ground, where wreaths are placed on the graves of Patriots. The parade makes its way through Downtown Crossing before ending at the Old State House.

The ceremony and parade are free. To get there, take an MBTA Green Line trolley to Government Center.

Declaration of Independence Reading

After following the parade to the Old State House, stick around to be reminded of our country’s historic beginnings with a reading of the Declaration of Independence, which will be read from the balcony just as it was on July 18, 1776, when Bostonians heard it for the first time.

The Declaration of Independence reading is July 4 at 10 am at the Old State House, 206 Washington St., Boston. It is free and open to the public. Take the MBTA Green Line trolley to Government Center and walk to Washington Street.

Reading of Frederick Douglass’ “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” One Franklin St.

Head to the Steps at Downtown Crossing to listen to the powerful words of one of the most influential African Americans of the 19th century, Frederick Douglass. A former slave, Douglass delivered the speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” on July 5, 1852. It questions the idea of independence in a country plagued by racial injustice. The reading will be accompanied by the sounds of African drums, dance, and gospel music. After the reading, enjoy a free ice cream social and explore a lively marketplace. This program is made possible by a grant from Mass Humanities through the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

USS Constitution Turnaround

For history buffs, watch the world’s oldest active warship come alive on her annual turnaround cruise in Boston Harbor. Affectionately known as “Old Ironsides,” this 204-foot-long vessel was launched in 1797. The ship will depart from the Charlestown Navy Yard around 10 am, sailing towards Fort Independence on Castle Island. The ship will fire a 21-gun salute around 11 am at Castle Island.

The Turnaround begins at 10 am at the Charlestown Navy Yard. To reach the Charlestown Navy Yard, take an MBTA Green Line trolley to Haymarket, then transfer to the MBTA 93 bus from Congress St. @ Haymarket St. to Chelsea St. @ Fifth St.

The 50th Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

In the evening, celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fireworks Spectacular with the Boston Pops Orchestra. The beloved event intertwining music and celebration returns to the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade from 8 to 11 pm. Conducted by Keith Lockhart (Hon.’04), the event features performances by Tony Award–winner Kelli O’Hara, The Mavericks, Darlene Love, and the Singing Sergeants from the United States Air Force Band. The 2024 celebration will include patriotic favorites, culminating with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and a fireworks display over the Charles River at 10:30 pm. 

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular concert begins at 8 pm, with fireworks at 10:30 pm, at the Hatch Memorial Shell, 47 David G. Mugar Way, and is free and open to the public. Find information on directions and parking here .

The 34-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end shared on Wednesday’s episode of the “New Heights” podcast how the cameo came to be — though Travis’ version would have been for a different era than “The Tortured Poets Department.”

“I initially mentioned it to Tay,” said the Super Bowl champ. “I was like, ‘How funny would it be if I just rolled out on one of the bikes during the ‘1989’ era?'”

The Grammy winner , 34, laughed and asked if he’d “seriously be up for doing something like that,” to which Kelce said: “What? I would love to do that, are you kidding me? I’ve seen the show enough — might as well put me to work here.”

In the end, Kelce says his girlfriend found the “perfect part of the show for me to come in,” noting that the bike portion of the idea was scrapped “in case I ran into somebody else or hit one of the dancers or anything.”

The “safest option” involved a tuxedo-clad Kelce carrying Swift and putting fake blush on her cheeks before doing a little dance — which he drew from Jim Carrey in “Dumb and Dumber.”

The experience, which occurred just before the song “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” ended up being “an absolute blast,” said Kelce.

“It was like … the perfect time for me to go up there, just be a ham and have some fun,” he said. “When everyone found out that it was me — because it took a second for everyone to figure it out — that moment was pretty jarring. … But no, it was awesome. And I didn’t disappoint Taylor, so that’s all that really matters.”

In fact, Swift gave Kelce a special shoutout in her Instagram post commemorating the London shows, sharing a carousel that began with a snap from their joint performance.

“I’m still cracking up/swooning over @killatrav’s Eras Tour debut,” said Swift. “Never going to forget these shows.”

Kelce’s appearance was at her third and final consecutive Wembley Stadium show last month — before she goes back later this summer. The couple, who began dating last July, went Instagram official after the first show, as Swift shared a backstage selfie of the stars with Prince William and his eldest kids, Prince George and Princess Charlotte .
