When Elvis Presley was just 22 years old, he purchased Graceland – a 10,266-square-foot mansion that occupied a nearly 14-acre property in Memphis, Tennessee . After the singer's death in 1977, the executors of his estate found that the mansion's exorbitant operating costs proved difficult to maintain, so they decided to open Graceland for tours in 1982. Since then, more than 20 million people from around the world have visited the mansion – which now spans 17,552 square feet – and its surrounding Elvis-themed museums and shops. Read on to plan your Graceland visit.

What is Graceland?

Graceland is a 120-acre institution dedicated to the life and music of Elvis Presley. The main draw is the mansion, but there's more to see than Elvis' former abode. Visitors can stop by Elvis Presley's Memphis, a 200,000-square-foot museum and entertainment complex. This building houses the Presley Motors Automobile Museum and a series of exhibits, such as "Elvis: Dressed to Rock," which features Elvis' performance outfits from 1969 to 1977.

The Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum, which displays the entertainer's gold and platinum records, his famous jumpsuits and movie memorabilia, can also be found here. Tourists will also have access to 10 interactive exhibits and games. Located throughout the complex, the interactive features include quizzes, a simulated golf cart ride and photo booths that put travelers on Elvis' movie posters and album covers. Finally, the complex houses two restaurants, a coffee shop, an ice cream parlor and a soundstage where tourists can watch Elvis' movies and attend live music performances.

After you learn all about the King, check out the Graceland Exhibition Center. This 80,000-square-foot venue features a variety of rotating museum exhibits, covering a variety of subjects, including motorcycles, Muhammad Ali and Van Gogh. The complex also boasts a food court, a bar and a separate, rentable event space.

No, you cannot visit Graceland without a tour. To access the site, you must purchase one of its ticket packages.

The cost per person varies depending on which tour experience you choose. Ticket packages that include access to the Graceland mansion start at $82 for adults and $46.50 for kids ages 5 to 10. Tickets can cost as much as $240 per person ages 2 and older for the "VIP" experiences, which offer access to exclusive areas, special keepsakes, meal vouchers and more.

There are multiple tour options for visiting Graceland.

• Elvis Presley's Memphis + Planes Tour : This is the basic tour option. It grants visitors access to Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex and the Elvis' Custom Jets exhibit, but does not include access to the mansion. Tickets for this tour start at $49.75 for adults, with discounts for children.
• Elvis Experience Tour : Tickets for this tour, which start at $82 per adult, include everything in the above tour, plus access to the mansion complete with an audio tour.
• Elvis Entourage VIP : The Elvis Entourage VIP tour includes everything in both the other tour options, plus skip-the-line access to the mansion, a VIP shuttle to the mansion, access to a special exhibit, and a keepsake pass. Tickets start at $139 per person ages 5 and older.
• Ultimate VIP Tour : The Ultimate VIP Tour includes everything in the Elvis Entourage VIP, plus a guided tour of the mansion with an experienced guide, access to a VIP lounge, a meal voucher to an on-site restaurant, an archives show and tell, the chance to buy exclusive souvenirs and a photo-op. Tickets for this experience start at $202 per person; children 2 and younger tour for free.
• Inside the Graceland Archives UVIP Tour : If you're interested in the work done by the Graceland Archives Team, consider this tour, which includes everything in the Ultimate VIP Tour, in addition to a behind-the-scenes look at how the performer's most iconic costumes are cared for and preserved, how his more than 90,000 photos are cataloged and prepped for touring exhibitions, and more. Tickets for this package start at $217 per person; children 2 and younger tour for free.

The mansion tour will take about 90 minutes to complete. Those who decide to tour the rest of Graceland's offerings should budget at least 3.5 hours to explore.

Which Graceland experience you choose largely depends on your fascination with the King. Graceland visitors mention that even non-Elvis fans will enjoy the tour and the up-close look at the entertainer's famous lifestyle. Visitors also appreciate the audio tour narrated by John Stamos. They recommend upgrading your tour to one of the VIP options, saying it is well worth the additional cost.

Graceland is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m. (depending on the day of the week and time of year). It closes or has abbreviated hours on holidays. The last mansion tour begins at 4 or 5 p.m., depending on the day and time of year.

The best time to visit Graceland depends on what kind of experience you want. Travelers should check out Graceland's events calendar as the complex and its hotel, the Guest House at Graceland, host numerous weekend events, concerts and day trips to Elvis' hometown throughout the year. Visitors in the mood for a festive atmosphere will want to book a trip in late November, December or early January to see the estate's holiday lights display and decorations.

Yes, you can stay overnight at Graceland. The Guest House at Graceland sits within steps of the mansion and features 450 rooms with designs inspired by Graceland, as well as two restaurants, an outdoor pool and a 464-seat theater for movies and performances, among other amenities.

• Visit the mansion after 2 p.m. to enjoy fewer crowds and shorter wait times, as this is the slowest time of day. (Multiple travelers note long wait times when arriving before this time). Check Graceland's website for exact opening times; there are certain days and holidays where hours vary.
• You're welcome to bring cameras, but flash photography is not permitted.
• Video cameras cannot be brought into the mansion, attractions or gift shops.
• Note that two rooms in the basement of the mansion and the airplanes are not wheelchair accessible.
• Bring a permanent marker to sign the famous Graceland wall before you leave.

Visit Graceland in Memphis Tennessee – The Best Elvis Presley Experience!

Do you want to visit Graceland in Memphis Tennessee? Are you wanting to plan a trip to Memphis, Tennessee?  If you are an Elvis fan, this will be a dream come true! 

I recently went and was blown away by how incredible Graceland was! 

This trip was special because my dad is a huge Elvis fan, and he even named me Lisa Marie!  I thought this would be a great chance to spend some time with my parents and learn all about Elvis.

In this post, we will cover how to get to Graceland, the cost to visit Graceland, how long it takes to tour Graceland, and what to see and do at Graceland in Memphis Tennessee. 

We had a wonderful time and now I am so excited to help you plan a trip to Graceland! Let’s explore all the things you need to know when you visit Graceland.

Where is Graceland?

Graceland was Elvis’s actual home, and it is situated on a 13.8 – acre estate in Memphis, Tennessee.  Currently, the home is under the ownership of Elvis’s daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.

How Do I Get to Graceland?

If you are flying in, you may want to rent a car . If you are planning to stay in the city of Memphis, there are also shuttle services to Graceland.

How Close is Graceland to the Airport?

The Memphis Airport is located 2 miles away from Graceland. This drive should only take about 7-10 minutes.

How Far is Graceland (Memphis) to Nashville?

You may want to visit both musical cities while you are in Tennessee.  If this is the case,  you can take a 215-mile drive (about 3 hours) between locations.

Admission to Graceland

There are a few ticket options for Graceland.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Graceland?

Four tour options range in price.

Basic Admission

The basic mansion tour is an audio-guided tour with prices that start at $41 for adults and $21 for children ages 7 to 12.

Elvis Experience Tour

The Elvis Experience Tour is $73 for adults and $42 for children.  This is the ticket I recommend getting.  There is so much more to Graceland than just the mansion.  This ticket will give you access to all the museums on site.

Ultimate VIP and Elvis Entourage VIP Tours

The Elvis Entourage Tour includes everything that the Elvis Experience Tour has, as well as a front-of-the-line pass and a backstage pass keepsake. It is $112 per person.

The Ultimate VIP Tour is led by a guide and starts at $174 per person; children 2 and younger tour for free.

The Ultimate VIP tour includes everything the Elvis Entourage Tour includes plus:

• Access to ultimate lounge and exclusive VIP exhibit
• Options to purchase special merchandise only available to ultimate guests
• A meal voucher for the restaurant at Elvis Presley’s Memphis
• Exclusive photo opportunity
• Personal Graceland archives show and tell session
• Keepsake backstage pass

Should I Purchase My Tickets Ahead of Time?

Yes, particularly now.  To address spacing concerns related to  COVID -19,  you will need to schedule your tour time when you book your tickets.

How Long Does it Take to Visit Graceland?

You might be wondering how long it takes to tour Graceland. I recommend planning an entire day to visit Graceland.

A tour of the mansion takes about one to one and a half hours. The Elvis Experience Tour, which includes the mansion, car museum, and several other exhibits will take much longer to explore. 

Our Experience

We started our tour at 9:30 am and did not leave until 3:00 pm.  It was not crowded when we went, so I imagine it would have taken much longer with crowds.

To make sure you don’t have to cut your day short, I would definitely plan to dedicate an entire day to Graceland.

Visit Graceland

Is graceland worth visiting.

Absolutely, Graceland is fantastic!  As you visit Graceland, you will fall in love with Elvis!  Elvis has been dead almost as long as I have been alive, and I still loved it!

The Mansion

The mansion is fantastic, it is like stepping back in time!  I enjoyed the audio presentation and touring all the rooms.  Learning all about Elvis was a highlight and actually made me a big fan.

The Museums

After the mansion, we made our way over to the museums.  It was this area that I began to fall in love with 20-year-old Elvis. He was such a heartthrob!  I loved learning about his career, military service, success, and even his personal struggles.

So not that you have a little taste of the overall experience, let’s dive in and explore Graceland a little more.

Parking at Graceland

As you visit Graceland, there will be a $10 parking fee.  Your vehicle is secure behind a gated area. 

Free Shuttle

If you are staying at The Guest House at Graceland Hotel located across the street there is a free shuttle that will allow you to avoid the parking fee.

Visit Graceland Mansion

Let’s begin the Graceland tour!

Story of Elvis – Film

As you enter Graceland, you will watch a film about Elvis’s life.  I loved learning all about him before we entered the mansion. 

You will get a professional photograph directly after the film which you can purchase this $30.  I thought it was worth it! 

Self Guided Audio Tour

After the film, you will then be given a self-guided audio tour device.  This device is an iPad with pictures, music, and is controlled by you which is very nice.  

Shuttle to the Mansion

Now the fun begins! The shuttle will take you to the Graceland estate.  You will be given a briefing and then be able to enter into the house. 

Tour the House

The house is a blast from the past! It is in pristine condition and is exactly how it was when Elvis lived there.  On the main floor are the living area, dining area, and kitchen. 

Also, you will see the staircase leading upstairs but no one is allowed to go to the upper floor.  This is out of respect for Elvis and his privacy. 

The Kitchen 

The kitchen screams 1970! It is funny that Elvis had every new technology available and yet as we look back, they are basic things everyone in America now has in their houses.  

The Jungle Room

The jungle room was an entertaining area designed with green shag carpet.  The carpet is even on the ceiling!  There are wild animals all around and the furniture is one of a kind! 

The movie room is bright and fun.  When Elvis learned that the President of the United States had three TVs to watch all the news channels at once, Elvis decided he needed 3 TVs to watch all sports events at once! 

The Billiards Room

This room is completely decorated with fabric and is very interesting! 

Graceland Estate

After you exit the house you will get to see the rest of the estate.  There is a racquetball court, pool, and horse stable outback.  Elvis’s tombstone is also located outside of the home.  

A small museum is on-site.  It focuses on the family history of the Presley family.  Did you know that Elvis was a twin?  I didn’t until walking through this museum.   (His brother died at birth.) 

Elvis Car Museum

Elvis Car Museum is awesome, I counted 15 cars!  This made me want to go on an Elvis car tour through Memphis .

In this same building, there is a section of other toys Elvis had such as; motorcycles, tractors, and golf carts.  There is an interactive game you can play in this area.  It is a simulator that will drive you around Graceland in a golf cart.

Elvis Career Museum

This was my favorite area. It was fun and educational.  This museum takes you through the early days of the 1950s.  1950’s Elvis is my favorite Elvis. 

The museum starts with how Elvis got his first hit, “It’s Alright Mama,” and how his life changed forever. 

Elvis served in the army in Germany during his early career as well.

1950’s Elvis

1950’s Elvis is a heartthrob!  He was so handsome.  One thing I loved is how interactive this museum was.   There are screens located around where you can take quizzes about Elvis and then get pictures with Elvis.  They are sent to your email.  

Also, there are two areas where Elvis serenades you.  A green screen is behind you as Elvis Sings.  A video is produced and sent to your email.  

1970’s Elvis

One thing about Elvis was his many, many outfits.  They are all displayed in this area as well as those of other actors that have portrayed Elvis.  

Elvis had so many hit records and there is a wall completely full of all of his songs.  It is really amazing!   At the end of the museum, you will watch a 1970 Elvis concert. 

Lisa Marie Museum 

There is a Lisa Marie Museum, and I thought I had better mention it since this is my namesake.  The Presley’s namesake continues through Lisa and her children.

Places to Eat at Graceland

We got hungry as we toured the museums.  We ate at Vernon’s Smokehouse, but that is only one of a few options at Graceland.  

Vernon’s Smokehouse

Vernon’s Smokehouse is named after Elvis’s father.  We decided to get a little barbeque since we were in Memphis.  It was really good.  You can choose a meat and two sides.  We liked this restaurant and highly recommend it. 

Glady’s Diner

Glady’s Diner is named after Elvis’s mother. It’s an all- American restaurant serving burgers, chicken, and of course the grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich!  It actually gets really great reviews. 

Minnie Mae Sweets

Minnie Mae was Elvis’s grandma.  If you just want a snack this sweet shop is your one-stop shop.  Ice cream sundaes, candy, and guess what – yes – even, peanut butter and banana cotton candy.  

It has a 1950s dinner décor.  It is super cute. 

Rock N Go Cafe

The Rock N Go Cafe is near the ticket windows as you enter Graceland.  There are grab-and-go items such as sandwiches and salads.

Can I Get Souvenirs at Graceland?

Yes, there are many souvenir shops located at Graceland.  One thing I loved was that each store did not have the same things.  There was a variety of merchandise to choose from.

I love buying souvenirs when I travel.  Snow globes always win in my book!

Can you Get Elvis Souvenirs Cheaper Somewhere Else?

Not really.  We went to a few other souvenir shops in Memphis and even Walgreens but found that it was maybe $1 cheaper than the prices at Graceland.

So if price is something that you are worried about, you should feel okay to go ahead and purchase the merchandise that you like as you visit Graceland.

Elvis’s Planes

Elvis actually had two planes.  One was really large and the other was a commuter jet.  His larger plane was named Lisa Marie!

As I boarded the plane, it kind of hit me that Elvis was really rich! Haha!  That plane must have been so nice back in the ’70s.  I think they said that each time he flew the plane it cost over $600,000.  That is so crazy!

But I guess that is nothing for the King of Rock N Roll!  Actually, they say that Elvis is still bringing in the dough — he is the highest-paid dead person bringing in 42 million each year!

Where Should I Stay when I Visit Graceland?

The Guest House at Graceland is beautiful.  It is located across the street from Graceland.  The rooms are really nice and are decorated with Elvis décor.

The outside pool area is a great to place relax and have a little fun.  There are outdoor games and beautiful lawn furniture.

The Staircase at the Guest House

There is a replica of the staircase that is in Graceland leading up to the second floor. Since you can’t climb the stairs at Graceland, the Guest House gives you your best chance at getting a similar experience.

I thought the hotel was beautiful, safe, and I highly recommend staying here if you are planning a trip to Graceland.

What Other Elvis Attractions are Nearby?

If you want to get more Elvis, consider driving down to Tupelo, Mississippi, just over an hour and a half drive from Graceland.

You can take a tour of the Elvis Presley Birthplace. 

Elvis’s Childhood Home in Tupelo 

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935, in his small shotgun house that his father Vernon built for $180 that he borrowed from his employer.

You can take a tour of the Elvis Presley Birthplace home. It is a 2-room house where Elvis was born with his twin brother, who was stillborn.

A family of little means, the Presleys only lived there for a few years after Elvis was born, but they continued to reside in Mississippi until 1948 when they moved to Memphis.

Historic Site

The property stands in its original location and has been restored to its original condition, decorated with period furniture as well as a replica 1939 Plymouth Sedan that the family used to drive.

This historic museum site of the birthplace of  Elvis Presley also includes a tour of the church building where the Presley family worshipped.

If you can’t make it to Elvis’s birthplace, there are still plenty of ways to spend an amazing weekend in Memphis . A must-see is Sun Studio, where Elvis recorded his first song, “It’s All Right Mama”  This tour will really give you an insight into how Elvis got his start.  I really enjoyed this tour!

Sun Studio and its proprietor, Sam Phillips, had quite the run.  This was also the launching point for such musicians as  Jonny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Roy Orbison.

It also lives on in the musical, Million Dollar Quartet, which reenacts the day Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins played together at the studio.

Admission is $15

You will want to purchase your t ickets ahead of time because space is limited because of COVID.

Rock N Soul Museum

The Rock N Soul Museum is part of the Smithsonian Institute Affiliate Program. so you know it is going to be nice.  We went and really enjoyed learning all about the famous musicians that have come out of Memphis.   Of course, Elvis is featured in this cool museum.

Admission is $11

My husband and I spent a short time in Memphis years ago and visited both Graceland and Sun Studio. We had SUCH a great time and have often talked about going back for a long weekend! Thanks for sharing – great pictures – it really brought back some fun memories!

Great post! Very thorough! We went to Graceland a couple years ago with my oldest daughter. We were staying in Nashville, so only had the day there. Miss Sunshine absolutely loved the whole experience! I love looking at the mansion… and the cars! There was soooo much to soak in! After a while, the constant barage of gift shops was a little much… but overall, we had a really great time!

There were a ton of gift shops, but what I liked is that they all had different merchandise.

We visited years ago and loved it! Much smaller than I thought it would be but also so cozy! Would love to go back and explore more – we were only there for a day!

13 Tips For Making The Most Of Your Time At Elvis' Famous Home, Graceland

Every year, Graceland attracts over half a million visitors — and we're not surprised by that figure. This Memphis landmark feels like both a time capsule and a shrine to the King of Rock 'n' Roll. But while some kings live in castles, Elvis preferred this 120-acre estate, and if you're heading here soon, you're about to find out why.

Everyone has heard of Elvis, but as the celebrity once said, "The image is one thing, and the human being is another," and Graceland offers this deeper look into the man behind the legend. The 23-room mansion is where he spent his years, raised his family, and eventually passed. Elvis Presley's Memphis complex is massive with museums and interactive displays detailing his life and legacy, and the Meditation Garden is where Elvis was laid to rest.

As you can tell, this place is massive, and whether you're an Elvis fan, a music buff, or love a good history museum, Graceland is a must-visit. From boarding Elvis' famous planes to observing his most personal artifacts, there's plenty to keep you occupied. But with so much to do, it's hard to know where to begin. We've scoured social media forums and researched the Graceland website and blogs to understand exactly what to expect when visiting. So before heading to Memphis and exploring the world-famous Graceland, consider these 13 tips to make the most of your time there.

Time your visit carefully

To make the most of your visit to Graceland, it's important to time your visit carefully. It's open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Opening hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m., depending on the time of year. Elvis' Airplanes open at 10 a.m. But for the ideal experience, we recommend visiting the mansion at 2 p.m. on weekdays. Multiple websites and people on social media claim this is the best time to avoid those pesky crowds.

However, if you're traveling on the cheap, a little loophole allows you to visit Graceland without spending a dime. You can pass through the gates for free between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. to silently pay your respects at Elvis' gravesite. Mind you, you're only allowed into the cemetery portion and must leave before tours arrive at 9 a.m.

When it comes to the time of year, spring or fall are probably the best seasons. Temperatures are comfortably cool, and you can walk the enormous grounds without breaking a sweat. Winter might be chilly, especially since you'll be outdoors for a good portion of time. And if you're planning your visit during the summer months, be aware that it can be hot and humid. But regardless of what season you're in Memphis, a visit to Graceland is worth it, especially if it's been on your bucket list.

Choose and purchase tickets in advance

There are several ticket options for Graceland, which can lead to serious analysis paralysis. Instead of rolling up to the gates and feeling overwhelmed by the options, do some research in advance. This could also save you money. Each ticket allows entry to specific exhibits and locations, and you don't want to pay for the places you're not interested in visiting. And while you can purchase tickets at the door, online reservations can save you time and stress.

The most economical ticket option for adults is the Memphis Ticket + Planes Tour, at $49.75. It includes access to Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex and Elvis' two custom airplanes but does not include entry to the Graceland Mansion. Next up is the Elvis Experience Tour, which covers a self-guided tour of Graceland Mansion, Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex, and Elvis' two custom airplanes for $82.

The Elvis Entourage VIP costs $149 and includes everything in the previous tours plus a tour of an exclusive VIP exhibit, front-of-the-line mansion access, and a keepsake backstage pass. The Elvis Movie UVIP Tour offers a different experience altogether. For $202, a private guide will lead you through Graceland's major areas and provide fascinating commentary based on Baz Luhrmann's research for his film "Elvis." Lastly, the Ultimate VIP Tour provides a more traditional private tour experience for $202, but if you visit before 1:30 p.m., you can add a meal voucher for $23.

Special groups can get a discount

If you're the type who's always on the hunt for a good discount, you might be in luck. Seniors, AAA members, military personnel, law enforcement, and firefighters can get a 6% discount off certain Graceland tours by presenting their ID or membership card at the ticket office. The discount is valid for up to six tickets per ID or membership card, so bring a group of friends or treat the family to a trip to Graceland.

True Elvis fans can do more than just visit Graceland; they can also join the Graceland Insider's Club . As a member, you'll get access to a members-only website with behind-the-scenes content, priority access to events and concerts, discounts at Graceland gift shops and restaurants, and a discount on tickets for guests you bring to Graceland. The membership costs $23.95 per year, and you can sign up on the Graceland website.

Know Graceland's attractions

As you walk around Graceland, you'll get a feel for Elvis' life and what it was like to walk in his shoes — blue suede shoes, of course. But this isn't your average home. It's a vast property with multiple attractions and exhibits, so it's best to familiarize yourself with the area before you go. This way, you can strategically visit the sites that pique your interest the most before running out of steam.

The Mansion is the most famous part of Graceland and the main reason people visit. It's a tour of the home where Elvis Presley lived for over 20 years, and it includes a look at the famous Jungle Room, the Trophy Building, and other parts of the house. However, the Mansion isn't the only hotspot at Graceland. 

Elvis Presley's Memphis is a 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex that includes exhibits, restaurants, shops, and theaters. The Car Museum houses over 20 of Elvis' cars, including his iconic pink Cadillac, along with motorcycles and other vehicles, while Elvis' Airplanes (the Lisa Marie and the Hound Dog II) showcase how he truly traveled in style. The Discovery Exhibits offer a glimpse into Elvis' life and career, featuring items like his military uniforms, gold records, and personal artifacts. Lastly, the King's Archives feature a collection of photos, documents, and other items that detail his historic life. 

Pay for parking ahead of time or arrange other transport

Memphis is a great stop on any music lover's road trip . So if you've brought your own car, you might want to drive yourself to Graceland. There are several parking options available, and the Graceland parking complex costs $10 per vehicle. When you're heading to Elvis' home, just punch in the GPS address of the parking lot: 3717 Elvis Presley Boulevard. Although you can always simply turn up, paying ahead can save you time and effort upon arrival. 

If you prefer not to drive to Graceland, you've got options. For the ultimate convenience, taxi and ride-share apps are available. Another option is to take the Memphis Hop Bus, a hop-on, hop-off bus, that stops at several Memphis attractions, including Graceland. It runs Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $40 for a one-day pass. Lastly, the most economical choice is to take the local bus. Bus #42 stops just in front of Graceland and costs about $1.

Not all areas are wheelchair or stroller accessible

Wheelchair users will be happy to know you can enjoy almost all the perks of Graceland. The property is wheelchair-friendly, with accessible ramps and elevators available to freely explore the Mansion, exhibits, restaurants, and gift shops. However, some portions do not accommodate wheelchairs, such as the basement of Graceland Mansion and the upstairs of the Lisa Marie airplane. As such, airplane tours are not suitable for wheelchair users. 

Unfortunately, Graceland doesn't provide wheelchairs, so you must bring your own. You can also rent one, and Graceland recommends doing this through either Medical Mobility: 901-683-3543 or Access Medical: 901-767-5400.

Although wheelchairs are welcome, strollers are a different story. Since they tend to be bulky, strollers aren't allowed in the Mansion. They must also be folded on shuttles to and from the Mansion. However, you can feel free to pop it open and use it when walking outdoors or in other guest facilities, including Elvis Presley's Memphis. 

Take photos (but follow the rules)

Not only can you take photos at Graceland — but you should! You'll want to capture those memorable moments at the King's castle. Just remember that there are a few restrictions on the types of photos you can take. Flash photography is not allowed inside the mansion, as it can damage the artifacts. Tripods and selfie sticks are not permitted inside the mansion or any of the exhibits — and if we're being honest, bumping into tourists handling all these props in small corridors would be a bit obnoxious anyway.

To keep copyright issues in check, you can't use video cameras, movie cameras, or tape recorders inside any of the museums or attractions, and they're not allowed on the Mansion premises at all. While you can use them outdoors, carrying them around might not be worth it. Leave them in your car or store them safely in a Graceland locker. 

We suggest bringing that smartphone and keeping it in photo mode only. You can take photos of the mansion, exhibits, and both of Elvis Presley's planes or strike a pose by his pink Cadillac. But to really up your selfie game, snap a photo in front of the "ELVIS" sign in Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum. Don't forget to add #Graceland to your posts, and who knows, you might show up on a future Graceland blog.

Bring a permanent marker and headphones

Bring a permanent marker so you can leave your mark on the famous "wall" outside the mansion. This wall is located along the pathway leading up to the house and is covered in messages from visitors over the years. It has become a kind of living museum covered in signatures, notes, and drawings from Elvis fans around the world. Some visitors even bring stencils or templates to create their own unique designs. So, get that marker ready and let inspiration strike, or plan ahead and practice that penmanship.

When it comes to the iPad tour, many visitors also bring their own headphones. It ensures that they have complete control over the volume and sound quality of the tour. This can be especially important in crowded areas where ambient noise makes hearing the tour audio difficult. Using your own headphones can also be more hygienic than using the ones Graceland provides, although staff sanitize these after each use. That being said, you get used to your own headphones, and comfort will only enhance your overall Graceland experience.

Spend the night at the Guest House Graceland

To feel like a personal guest of Elvis himself, book a room at the Guest House. This hotel is right next door to the Graceland Mansion and features a variety of amenities, including two full-service restaurants, a large outdoor pool, and a shuttle service to and from Memphis International Airport. But what truly makes the Guest House so special is its unique design and decor that pay tribute to Elvis Presley's personal style and tastes. Think rock 'n' roll with luxury and a touch of Southern charm. It's basically like you're walking around in his world.

While staying at the Guest House, you're just a short walk from the Graceland Mansion. This makes visiting Graceland super easy, especially for those who want to spend more time exploring the property or attending events and exhibitions. Plus, the hotel offers special packages that include tickets to Graceland and other Elvis-related attractions in the area. 

Plan enough time for your visit

A  Graceland visit can be a full-day experience — or even longer for die-hard fans. Touring the mansion alone usually takes about an hour, while the Elvis Experience Tour can take up to four hours. However, don't worry about feeling rushed. You're allowed to linger and revisit sights after the tours, so you can take your time and really soak up the experience. And if you need to step out, you can leave and return to Graceland on the same day without having to worry about buying another ticket. This is especially convenient if you're planning to spend the whole day at Graceland, as you can grab lunch in the area and then return to the grounds later.

If one day isn't enough, multi-day passes are available for purchase. Although you can't buy them in advance, you can pick them up on-site. These passes can save you money if you plan on spending more than one day exploring the grounds. An additional day will set you back $18, two extra days cost $29, and three extra days costs $39.

Plan ahead during peak season and special events

During peak season, Graceland gets busy, and tickets may sell out. This period typically runs from late spring to early fall, and crowds are even more intense on major holidays and weekends. It's a good idea to purchase tickets and make arrangements well in advance so you don't miss out.

While any visit to Graceland is a cause for celebration, you can take it up a notch by booking tickets for a special occasion. Check Graceland's Calendar of Events for fun concerts, holiday-themed tours, and unique events. Of course, these celebrations will be in hot demand, so you'll need to book your accommodations and tickets ahead of time.

The Elvis Birthday Celebration takes place every January and includes concerts, film screenings, and special tours. Elvis Week is held in August and is a weeklong celebration of his with concerts, panel discussions, and tours of Graceland, culminating in a candlelight vigil outside the mansion on the anniversary of Elvis's death. Finally, the Holiday Lighting Ceremony takes place in November every year, which marks the start of the holiday season at Graceland. This event includes a lighting ceremony, live music, and festive activities to ring in the holidays.

Grab food on-site

With its vast size and multiple exhibits, it's best to treat Graceland like a marathon, not a sprint. As such, you might need to stop for sustenance along the way. After all, all that walking can build up quite the appetite. Luckily, Graceland has prepared for this with two on-site restaurants: Vernon's Smokehouse and Gladys' Diner. 

Vernon's Smokehouse has a casual and relaxed ambiance, with indoor and outdoor seating and a menu that features barbecue ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and other Southern favorites. Here, you can enjoy its food while listening to live music and watching the chefs at work in the open kitchen. Meanwhile, Gladys' Diner is designed to look like a 1950s-style diner, with booths and counter seating and a menu that includes burgers, hot dogs, fries, and milkshakes. The walls are decorated with memorabilia from Elvis's life, and the whole place gives off nostalgic vibes. 

To jump-start your morning, you can also stop by Rock 'n' Go Cafe , which offers coffee and takeaway items, including Elvis' favorite snack, a PB and banana sandwich. And if your sweet tooth is calling, grab an ice cream at Minnie Mae's Sweets. Its hand-dipped ice cream is the perfect way to cool off after a long day of sightseeing at Graceland.  

Visit the other Elvis sites in town

Graceland is just one of the many places Elvis fans should visit in Memphis. If you're in town, you should soak up all the Elvis magic possible, from museums to menswear. There's no shortage of rock 'n' roll vibes in Memphis, and the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum is an excellent place to start. This museum tells the story of the birth of rock and soul music in Memphis, including Elvis' impact on the genre. You can see exhibits of rare recordings, instruments, and costumes. Follow it up with a visit to the Overton Park Shell , an outdoor amphitheater where Elvis gave his first-ever paid performance, and  Sun Studio , where Elvis recorded his first hit.

Since Memphis was Elvis' stomping grounds, tour the hotspots he frequented in town. Grab a burger and sit in the same booth as Elvis at the Arcade Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in Memphis. Shop vintage-inspired clothing and accessories at Lansky's Brothers , one of Elvis' favorite outfitters. Here, you can also see some of the store's famous customers' photos and see where the King embraced his iconic style.

Elvis Presley's Graceland Now Offering Live Virtual Tours

On March 19, 1957,  Elvis Presley purchased a mansion on a 13.8-acre estate in Memphis, Tennessee . Located at what is now 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard, the Graceland mansion became a castle for The King. Each year, thousands of Elvis fan visit Graceland for the ultimate Elvis experience. But this year, Graceland is offering live online tours for fans who can't travel to the historic home and Southern travel staple due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tours last two hours and will guide virtual visitors through Presley's home and through the Meditation Garden, where the musical icon is buried.

Virtual tours are scheduled for Jan. 27, Feb. 25 and March 25. More dates are expected to be announced.

Graceland Tours

The year's first big celebration is held during the first weekend in January for a four-day celebration honoring Elvis' birthday (Jan. 8). Every summer, fans from around the world flock to Graceland for "Elvis Week," a week-long celebration of The King of Rock 'n' Roll's music, movies and legacy. This year, "Elvis Week" will take place from Aug. 11 through Aug. 17. The week culminates in the annual Elvis memorial candlelight vigil.

There are many different ways to experience Graceland. First you'll need to decide on a ticket option. Elvis superfans may want to opt for the Ultimate VIP Tour , which includes an expert Elvis tour guide, a meal voucher for Vernon's Smokehouse, a look inside Elvis' planes, a self-guided tour at Elvis' custom jets and full access to Elvis Presley's Memphis Entertainment Complex, featuring the Presley Motors Automobile Museum, the Elvis: the Entertainer Career Museum, self-guided tours of the Elvis Discovery exhibits and an exclusive VIP exhibit. The Elvis Experience Tour includes a tour of the mansion as well as access to exhibits showcasing Elvis' career, automobiles, wardrobe, gold records and more. This tour is priced at $61 per person.

The least expensive tour option is the Graceland Mansion Only Tour , which will only allow you access to the mansion. There's still plenty to see, including Presley's personal family artifacts. At just $41 per person, it's a bargain.

Bottom line: if you're only interested in walking through the King's house, the Mansion Only tour might be your best bet. You'll still get to see Elvis' music room, TV room, the Graceland dining room and my personal favorite, the Jungle Room. But if your tour of Graceland isn't complete without a look at Elvis' jumpsuits, pink Cadillac or the pink Jeep he drove in Blue Hawaii , make sure your tour includes Elvis Presley's Memphis.

If you're just passing through Memphis or just want to visit Presley's grave, Graceland's Meditation Garden offers free walk-up visits from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.. The garden includes the grave sites of Elvis Presley as well as his parents and grandmother.

There's no shortage of good eats in Memphis. For the direct Elvis connection, try Elvis' favorite — the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich at Gladys' Diner (named for mama Presley herself), located inside Graceland.

Of course, no trip to Memphis is complete without getting some authentic Memphis BBQ. Hit up Central BBQ on South Main, Payne's Bar-B-Q in Midtown or Pollard's Bar-B-Q in Whitehaven. You won't be disappointed.

Where to Shop:

A trip to Graceland calls for some Elvis merch. Visit the official Graceland store  to buy everything from Elvis t-shirts to rhinestone-embellished Elvis socks.

But as you would expect, Elvis gift shops in Memphis don't end with Graceland. Venture out to Boulevard Souvenirs (located across the street from Graceland) to pick up Memphis memorabilia and Elvis collectors items.

Where to Stay:

Is Graceland worth visiting? August 16th marks the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death, and “The King” is more popular than ever. Below is our review of visiting Graceland, which reflect updates to the facility made recently.

The Elvis Presley Graceland home is a required pilgrimage for Elvis fans. Graceland Memphis TN is one of the most popular Memphis attractions, but with tickets ranging from roughly $40 to over $150, is Graceland worth visiting? We set out to see if a tour of the Elvis house was worth the price.

There are many different options for visiting, which we share below (along with our candid opinions). A lot depends on how much of a fan of “the King” you are, along with how much time you want to spend, and of course your budget.  If you are a fan going to Memphis to walk in the footsteps of your musical idol then Graceland is a must. If you’re just passing through and are simply curious, it may not be as high a priority. (Although we do share a  free hack for a quick visit at the bottom of the post.)

We’re casual fans. I like his music but I’ve never seen one of his movies in its entirety (Larissa has–I think it’s a “girl thing”) and I owned only one of his albums. Despite this, we were pleasantly surprised to find there was plenty to see, and it was one of the best Memphis tours that we took.

Graceland Tours

There are ticket packages with different options about what you can see, which range from below $50 to over $150. Since prices are subject to change we are categorizing them into 3 general price ranges:

• Low: Under $50
• Moderate: $50 to $90
• High: Over $90

1. The Graceland Mansion Only

(Price category: LOW) Includes: an audio-guided tour of Graceland, Elvis’ house, only. While this is the least expensive option, at around $40 it’s not exactly cheap; we don’t think it’s the best value.

2. The Elvis Experience Tour

(Price category: MODERATE) In our opinion, this is the best value. It’s about $20 extra, but you get to see a LOT more. This package includes the Graceland Mansion, plus full access to the all-new Elvis Presley’s Memphis Entertainment Complex, which includes three self-guided exhibits:

• Presley Motors Automobile Museum: A great collection of Elvis’ favorite cars
• Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum: Gold records, the funky jumpsuits and more
• Elvis Discovery Exhibits: A collection of exhibits (some rotating) that showcase different facets of Presley’s life, such as his Army years and growing up in Tupelo, MS.

(NOTE: Most of what you are paying for on the VIP tours is the ability to skip the line. We visited at 2:30 on a weekday afternoon in late August and there was absolutely NO line. We strolled through the house practically on our own and had the Jungle Room all to ourselves. However, if you’re visiting on a weekend, or during a special event, it may be worth the extra money.)

  5. The Elvis Entourage VIP + Airplanes Tour

(Price Category: HIGH). So you have to pay an extra few bucks to see the airplanes if you purchased only the Elvis Entourage VIP Tour. You still get the ‘Front-of-the-Line” mansion access and the backstage pass.

6. The Elvis Entourage VIP Tour (With Transportation)

(Price Category: HIGH) This is a good option if you’re staying in downtown Memphis and don’t have a car (or don’t feel like dealing with parking hassles). You get a full-day pass to the attractions listed above (Airplanes a modest surcharge), along with regularly scheduled shuttles to/from several Memphis hotels.

7. The Ultimate VIP Tour

(Price category: HIGH+). If you just won the lottery this is the tour for you. Instead of touring the mansion via a self-guided audio tour you get a personal guide plus: transportation for your tour of Graceland Mansion in special vehicle, access to Ultimate Lounge at Elvis Presley’s Memphis, options to purchase special merchandise only available to Ultimate guests, a meal with table service at one of the Elvis Presley’s Memphis restaurants, Exclusive Photo Opportunity, Personal Graceland Archives Show and Tell Session and the Keepsake Backstage pass. We didn’t take this tour, so we can’t recommend it. But to us it seems like a lot of extra doodads you could purchase at the souvenir shop, along with a meal at a restaurant that’s open to the public anyway.

Elvis’ favorite car was this pink 1955 Cadillac he bought for his mother . . . even though she couldn’t drive!

Even if you’re not a fan we recommend the Elvis Experience Tour . It helps put the whole Elvis “Phenomenon” into context, and gives you a greater appreciation for the impact Elvis Presley made on music and pop culture in his relatively short life. You’ll see the car museum (I’m a classic car guy, and included the Presley Automobile Museum in my guide to classic car museums , so I had to see that) and a few more exhibits. If you want to pay more to go inside the airplanes is up to you. You’ll only be inside them for a few minutes tops. (Well, most people will be–Larissa was in there for half an hour!)

Ah, yes, the infamous Jungle Room at Elvis’ Graceland.

Inside Graceland: Jungle Room & more

Graceland mansion includes Elvis’ house, which is not that large for someone who was larger than life, along with the paddock with his father Vernon’s office, and racquetball court. It’s interesting to walk through the rooms where he lived (except for the off-limits second floor) and get a sense of the man, or at least his lavish taste in decoration.

The Jungle Room is legendary for what some consider its tackiness. Woe unto anyone who had the misfortune to die in the 1970s and have their design choices from that funky era of shag carpeting and garish colors be memorialized forever. On the plus side, a prerecorded guided tour with headsets is included with the admission ticket, most places charge extra for that.

The tour of the grounds ends beside the in-ground pool with a somber visit to the Meditation Garden containing the graves of Elvis and his family. A stone marker also commemorates his twin brother Jesse, who was stillborn. [Note: If you simply want to pay your respects, here’s a  free hack:  the Meditation Garden is open daily from 7:30am to 8:30am for free walk-up visits.]

Elvis Presley’s Memphis: multiple museums and displays

On the west side of Elvis Presley Boulevard, you’ll find Elvis Presley’s Memphis, a recently-opened entertainment complex that houses the other museums and exhibits. [These are included in all tour packages except the “Mansion only” tour.] This is where you’ll find Elvis’ collection of gold records and those famous jumpsuits.

Other displays include videos of his early TV appearances and costumes and memorabilia from his movies. You can also see the outfits that he and Priscilla wore for their wedding. (BTW, if you’re seeking a gift for the Elvis fan in your life, those costumes shown at the top of this post are available in the gift shop for a mere $2,000 and up.)

There are also two restaurants–Vernon’s Smokehouse and Velma’s Diner–along with a coffee shop. This makes it easy to pace yourself through the many exhibits. We took a break, had a peanut butter & banana sandwich (Elvis’ fave) at Velma’s, and were refreshed and ready to continue exploring.

Visiting Graceland: Practical Stuff

The Graceland tour is well organized. The ticket office, museums, jets, gift shops, restaurants and rotating displays are on the west side of Elvis Presley Boulevard, while the mansion is across the road. Visitors board shuttle buses to enter the mansion grounds. Once you’re over there, it’s just the house, some outbuildings and the Meditation Garden, so it is not overrun by commercialism.

One negative aspect was the parking charge . I could understand this during busy times and festivals, but on a midweek afternoon the lot was virtually empty and we still had to pay $10–effectively adding five bucks to each of our admissions. I wasn’t too happy about that. It looked like there might have been free spaces on the street, but we didn’t discover that until later.

Graceland Hours:  Monday-Saturday from 9am to 5pm; Sunday 9am to 4pm for most of the year. Winter hours and holidays might be shorter–best to check the website .

For the full immersion experience, the best choice would be The Guesthouse at Graceland , which is part of the Graceland complex. (It didn’t open until after our visit, but you can bet we’re going to try it the next time we’re in town!)

Our Verdict

So is visiting Graceland worth it? While it depends on your level of fandom–and we’re not crazy fans–we still felt it was worthwhile. It’s not like visiting a zoo or fine arts museum, which you can find in any major city. There is only one home of  King of Rock and Roll ; Graceland is unique and we’re glad we went.

Visiting Graceland Review: Thoughts, Tours, Prices, and More!

When my mom and I first started planning our trip to Nashville, my mom mentioned that she would also like to visit Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. That was before we realized it would add an extra three and a half hours to our trip! However, we had no clue when we would be in the area again, so we decided to work a day trip to Graceland into our itinerary, and I’m glad we did! Graceland was originally part of a family farm and was named after one of the family relatives named “Grace.” A mansion was built on the land in 1939, and was later purchased by Elvis Presley in 1957 about a year after he really started becoming famous. Although Elvis owned many houses, Graceland served as his sort of “home-base.”

Graceland hours of operation vary based on the time of year and on holidays, but it general opens at 9AM and closes at 4PM or 5PM. A detailed breakdown of operating hours can be found on the Graceland website .

Our Graceland Experience

Despite only ever having listened to one or two Elvis songs, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed my time at Graceland. My mom decided to do the Elvis Experience tour, which meant we would get to see not only Elvis’s mansion, but also various exhibits about Elvis’s life as well as his car collection.

Once we got our tickets, we watch a short intro video before catching a shuttle to the mansion. Once we returned, we were free to explore the various exhibits before hitting the many gift shops!

As we waited in line for the shuttle to the mansion, everyone was handed tablets and headphones. Personally, I chose to decline the equipment because I was more interested in taking pictures than listening to fun facts about Elvis. Plus, my mom had taken the audio guide so if there was anything interesting she could just tell me.

For regular visitors (i.e. somebody who isn’t obsessed with taking pictures like I am), I highly suggest taking the audio guide. For one, it’s free. Secondly, there really aren’t any informational plaques to explain what things are, so you really miss out on the tour of Elvis’s mansion if you don’t have it.

The house tour was actually really cool. I’ve been to a lot of historic homes, but this one was definitely unique. One of the rooms was called the jungle room and featured green carpet with several different statues of various animals. Another room had clothing fabric grouped into bunches covering the walls and ceiling. The stairwell into the basement was completely surrounded by mirrors. Have you ever been to any houses like this? I didn’t think so…

In the Presley Motors Automobile Museum, we were able to see Elvis’s car collection, including his famous pink Cadillac. It was also cool to see the golf carts and go karts he used to race around the property in with his friends and family.

Elvis Discovery: Private Presley

The Elvis Discovery Exhibits give you’re a deeper look into his life. In particular, it highlights the time he spent in the military. I personally found it interesting if only because it was so hard to picture a celebrity like Elvis being a Private in the military.

In the Entertainer Career Museum, we were able to see many of the various outfits he wore for his performances, as well as Grammy awards and various other awards he had received over the years. Probably my favorite part was all of the inspirational quotes from him on some of the walls.

Despite the fact that I’m not a big Elvis fan, and didn’t even know what Graceland was until a few months ago (gasp!), I actually really enjoyed my time at Graceland. I especially enjoyed the tour of the mansion, if only because of how unique it was. It was definitely unlike any other historical home I had ever toured. The one and only downside is that people file through the mansion in a single file line (due to the way things are roped off), which means the pace of your tour is pretty much set by the pace of the people in front of and behind you.

I personally wasn’t as interested in some of the other exhibits such as the Entertainer Career Museum or Presley Motors,  although I thought the Private Presley exhibit was a little interesting since I hadn’t known he’d served in the military. My mom on the other hand thought the Presley Motors section was really cool and worth seeing.

Overall, I’d say it’s a great place to visit, regardless of whether or not you’re an Elvis Presley fan. However, I think the more in-depth tours and ticket options are best for those who have a stronger interest in Elvis.

Tour Options:

A tour of the mansion takes about one to one and a half hours. The Elvis Experience tour, which includes the mansion, car museum and several other exhibits, takes anywhere from two and a half to three and a half hours.

Graceland Ticket Prices:

A tour of Elvis’ airplanes can be added onto the Graceland Mansion Only, Elvis Experience, and Elvis Entourage VIP tours for an additional $5 USD. All prices are as of August 8th, 2018. Please check the Graceland website for the most up-to-date information.

A 10% discount on tickets is also available for the following:

• AAA members
• Military personnel
• College students (with ID)
• Graceland Insiders

Parking at Graceland costs $10 USD for standard vehicles and $15 USD for oversized vehicles (RV’s, trailers, etc).

• You can sign one of the walls at Graceland, so make sure to bring a sharpie
• There are free kids activity books for children available at Guest Services
• You can also get a free poster at Guest Services by “checking in” to Graceland on Facebook.
• You can check out GracelandCam , a live video camera, to see how busy it is in advance

Sun Studios offers a free shuttle that stops at Sun Studio, Graceland and the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum so you can easily get to Graceland from one of the other popular attractions around town.

• From Nashville TN: ~3.5 hours
• From St. Louis MO: ~4.25 hours
• From Jackson MS: ~3 hours

Days Inn at Graceland

When we made our plans to visit Graceland, we chose to stay at Days Inn Memphis at Graceland because it was literally right next to the entrance of Graceland. We could have walked between the two! I’m not normally a fan of the motel style accommodations where there are no interior hallways and hotel room doors can be directly accessed from the parking lot. However, like I said it was right next to our one and only attraction in Memphis, and it was a good price.

Not long after we checked in and got to our room, we noticed a decent amount of mold on the bathroom wall. I’m sorry, but that much mold doesn’t grow over night. Either that room hadn’t been cleaned in a long time, or the cleaners just hadn’t bothered to clean it. Regardless, we called the front desk. Of course, we asked for another room, but there were none available. In the end, we decided to check out without staying the night. I was given a full refund without any issues.

Honestly, I think we just got unlucky. The hotel was completely booked, and the reviews online had all been relatively good. Obviously plenty of other people have stayed there and enjoyed it, so I don’t want to say it’s a terrible place to stay, but we definitely had a less than pleasant experience.

Crowne Plaza

In the end, we decided to stay at Crowne Plaza Memphis East a few miles away. It was a little ways from downtown Memphis and from Graceland, but it was a much nicer hotel, and we got it at a fantastic rate since it was so last minute (and they were trying to fill empty rooms). We definitely felt much more comfortable here.

The Guest House at Graceland

If you are looking for something as upscale as the Crowne Plaza but closer to Graceland, you can also check out The Guest House at Graceland . It is also right next to Graceland and was inspired by the hospitality Elvis always showed his guests. They also offer special package deals that combine your stay with tickets to Graceland.

Your article on Graceland was right on. The only thing is on Days Inn we didn’t check out. The nightmare continued the next morning. Taking all our belongings to a laundry mat and running to the store for medications. Unable to receive a refund. Days Inn should be shut down. As it is a disgrace to Graceland and Memphis
