Lions announce 2013 fixtures

The 10-match schedule for the 2013 tour to Australia has been announced today. [more]

The 10-match schedule for the 2013 tour to Australia has been announced today.

British & Irish Lions manager Andy Irvine made the announcement at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff at lunchtime.

The Lions and the Australian Rugby Union have agreed a programme of nine matches for the Tour in Australia, including three Test matches. The Lions will also play an historic match in Hong Kong against the Barbarians on their way to Australia.

“The announcement of the 2013 tour schedule represents another milestone in the rich history of the British & Irish Lions," said Irvine.

"Since 1888 when the Lions embarked on their first ever tour, which happened to be to Australia, the famous red shirt has become an aspirational symbol of achievement for players in Britain and Ireland.

“The Lions receive numerous requests to play matches around the world outside of the traditional tour destinations of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. For 2013 we had the perfect opportunity to play a match in the developing rugby region of Asia, while at the same time break the long journey from Europe to Australia. As has become customary we also wanted 10 matches to maximise the essential pre-Test series build up.

“The last Lions tour to Australia in 2001 heralded the dawn of 'The Red Army' with tens of thousands of English, Irish, Scottish & Welsh tourists and ex-pats wearing the red jersey in support of the Lions. We look forward to another challenging tour to one of the world's most beautiful countries."

The Wallabies finished third at the recent Rugby World Cup and are currently ranked second in the world.

The six-week tour will include the match against the Babaas in Hong Kong, matches against all five Australian Super Rugby teams, a game against New South Wales Country and three Test matches against the Qantas Wallabies in Brisbane (June 22), Melbourne (June 29) and Sydney (July 6).

“With the latest Rugby World Cup tournament completed, a major focus for the rugby world is now the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia in 2013. Lions tours are hugely popular and outside of Rugby World Cup represent one of the game’s major show pieces with global media coverage and ticket sales testament to their popularity,” added Lions chairman Gerald Davies.

“It has to be said that the last two series' between the Wallabies and the Lions have been memorable. In 1989 and 2001 both three-Test series went down to the last match. Of course the Lions were victorious in the series in 1989 but the Wallabies had their revenge in 2001. I am sure that the 2013 series will be just as competitive with the tour reigniting the fierce but respectful rivalry that exists between the two sides.”

The last tour by the Lions to Australia was a decade ago when the Lions played 10 matches including three Tests. They won seven matches, including the first Test against the Wallabies, and lost three. These defeats were against Australia A and the Wallabies in the second and third internationals. The vital third Test was won by the Wallabies 16–13 at Stadium Australia, Sydney, in front of a crowd of 84,188 as the Wallabies clinched the series.

Giles Morgan, group head of sponsorship, HSBC Holdings plc added, “Today marks the beginning of another exciting journey for HSBC, our staff and customers, as we build towards the British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia. The Lions resonates particularly well with HSBC’s target audience, and this sponsorship enables us to engage with four of our key markets in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong and Australia. There is already great anticipation from our staff and customers around the world and, with the dates and destinations now confirmed, the countdown has truly begun for what promises to be another thrilling Lions tour.”

Fans can now guarantee their place on the Lions tour with Lions Rugby Travel, the official travel company of the British & Irish Lions (http://www.lionstour.com). The official Lions travel company will offer fans an unprecedented range of official ticket inclusive packages from fully escorted tours through to return international flights and match ticket options.

It will also be possible for fans to create their own tour itineraries around the destinations they want to see most in Australia. For more information, fans can visit lionstour.com or call 0844 788 4070 to guarantee their place on tour now.

The venues, kick off times and broadcasting schedule will be confirmed in due course.

2011 lions tour

Lions expecting more than 50,000 fans for home opener

The BC Lions are on the verge of history.

The team is expected to host more than 50,000 fans at BC Place on Saturday when the Calgary Stampeders head west for the Lions’ home opener.

Rapper 50 Cent will perform before the opening kickoff of what is expected to be the largest regular-season crowd at a CFL game since Sept. 30, 2011, when a newly renovated BC Place re-opened.

“It’s huge for us to know that, hey, our season opener at home is gonna have 35,000 or 45,000 [plus] people,” said veteran offensive lineman Sukh Chungh, who has been with the team since 2019 and grew up in the greater Vancouver area. “Playing in front of your home crowd and having a loud crowd behind you is a great feeling.”

The Lions’ attendance has increased by 23 per cent since 2019, and their brand recognition has grown as well. The franchise has a bigger presence in the community, grown its fanbase, and is seen by many as the gold standard for marketing in the CFL.

Much of that can be traced to owner Amar Doman. The Victoria native, who owns real estate and industrial supply companies, bought the team in August of 2021.

“Amar is the brand,” said Aziz Rajwani, a business professor at the University of British Columbia and contributor to The Sports Market radio show. “The owner has had a significant impact on the team in Vancouver and how the fans have embraced the team.”

Doman hired Duane Vienneau as the team’s president in 2022 from the CFL, where he was the chief Grey Cup and events officer. Vienneau vividly recalls one of their first conversations.

“One of the very first things he said was, ‘We’ve missed a generation of people,’” Vienneau said. “You’ve heard people say that the fanbase is getting older. One of the things he said is, ‘Let’s get younger.’”

50 Cent isn’t the only high-profile music act to headline a Lions game. The team also had big numbers for OneRepublic and LL Cool J the previous two seasons, both of which drew more than 33,000 fans.

It’s not just the popular music acts, either. Tickets are cheaper to BC Lions games than seeing those acts in concert. Fans 17 and under can see 50 Cent on Saturday for just $15, while adult tickets start at $25.

Vienneau gave Doman all the credit for the concert initiative.

“He doesn’t just want to do a halftime show,” Vienneau said. “He wants to give the fans something from him…you’re not getting three or four songs in the middle of the game. You come in, you get a 45-minute set, and then the building gets turned over into the game. That’s very different to what most teams do…we want to be young, and we want to be affordable.”

The Lions have made other changes to make their team more accessible.

They schedule games earlier in the day to make it easier for fans from Vancouver Island and the Okanogan to attend without having to stay overnight in Vancouver. The Lions are more involved with amateur football and the local Indigenous communities. They also have more theme games, including a successful watermelon smash collaboration with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2023.

“We created this duelling tailgate party,” Vienneau said. “The way we described it to people is, ‘You come in the front door [of BC Place], are you going to the groom’s side or are you going to the bride’s side? You going to Saskatchewan or B.C.?’”

Riders executives, staff, and fans showed up and helped the Lions set up the event. It was such a hit that the CFL asked the Lions to host the event again this year. The Lions also collaborated with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on an event they called the “Gravy Bowl.”

“I asked Wade Miller, the president of the Bombers, to come and him and I carved and served turkey dinner to fans of both teams pre-game,” Vienneau said.

Chungh and his teammates appreciate the culture change in the organization and the new energy Doman has brought. They see the packed stands and growing Lions presence not just in Vancouver, but across British Columbia.

“[Doman] has definitely grabbed peoples’ attention around the league,” Chungh said. “I think he’s got a buzz around him that, ‘Hey, you come to B.C., we’ve got a good home crowd to play in front of, a beautiful stadium, and we’re really out in the community.’”

A year from today, the 2025 British & Irish Lions squad will be into their first full week of training in preparation for the tour to Australia .

Head coach Andy Farrell has the challenge of moulding the best players from England , Ireland , Scotland and Wales into a team capable of beating Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies in a three-Test series in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

That first get-together will miss players involved in the English Premiership and the United Rugby Championship (URC) finals on 14 June.

And the same goes for any Lions chosen from any French clubs still in with a shout of the Top 14 final on 28 June – they could include Farrell’s son Owen, who is playing for Racing 92 in Paris next season .

When the next Lions tour is, plus key dates and fixtures for Australia 2025

But the Lions’ overriding aim, of course, is to win the Test series, and they have until the date of the opening Test on 19 July to get the combinations right.

How might a Lions Test team look? And which factors will affect selection between now and next summer? With help from the Lions playing and coaching doyen Sir Ian McGeechan, here’s a run through some of the key issues – with a predicted XV below.

Is it Ireland all the way?

McGeechan has seen it all across seven Lions tours as a player, head coach and assistant coach, and he strikes a note of caution about Ireland, who have won the Six Nations for the past two years under Andy Farrell, while losing in a quarter-final of the World Cup to New Zealand in between.

“At the moment you have to start with Irish names, when you look at how well they are going,” McGeechan said in his chat with i , “although ultimately a Lions tour must reflect the previous 12 months.”

Right now, you could make a case for at least 11 starters with Andrew Porter, Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Furlong, Joe McCarthy, Tadhg Beirne and Caelan Doris in the forwards, and Jamison Gibson‑Park, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose, James Lowe and Hugo Keenan in the backs, with many a pundit tipping the ultra-consistent back-rower Doris as tour captain.

But opinion may change drastically if Irish standards should slip in the forthcoming summer series away to South Africa, and next season’s autumn series and Six Nations, plus the further adventures of Champions Cup runners-up Leinster and the other provincial sides.

Who knows, this time next year, we may have seen a resurgent England under Steve Borthwick, the further rise of Scotland, or a comeback to form by a youthful Wales.

Back three formation?

Straight away, the quintessential joy of the Lions is clear: to mix and match the stars of four teams, with Andy Farrell’s game plan laced through it.

The end of this Northampton Saints era shows the problems facing English rugby

The end of this Northampton Saints era shows the problems facing English rugby

On the wing, he is likely to value defensive solidity and proven finishing ability, which brings Scotland’s Duhan van der Merwe and England’s new prospect Immanuel Feyi-Waboso into the debate.

James Lowe has had a fine season for Ireland, improving his positioning play and kicking superbly. Scotland’s Darcy Graham and Ireland’s Mack Hansen are strong contenders who have had injuries, and could Louis Rees-Zammit be back in the mix after his dabbles with the NFL?

Tommy Freeman of England must have a good shout with his utility value. At full-back, McGeechan name-checks Keenan of Ireland plus Scotland’s Blair Kinghorn – “I really rate him” – and Freddie Steward and George Furbank from England.

Although Kinghorn, of course, plays for the newly-crowned Champions Cup winners Toulouse, so he may wind up joining the tour late.

Guiding light at fly-half?

Owen Farrell adopted a staunch cross-that-bridge-if-we-come-to-it approach when he was asked about the Lions a few weeks ago, but if the stars aligned for the 32-year-old, he could yet feature at No 10, with his father as his head coach for the first time.

How ‘brave’ Fin Smith edged ahead of Marcus in England’s battle for No 10

How 'brave' Fin Smith edged ahead of Marcus in England's battle for No 10

Fin Smith is one of England’s coming men , and the next 12 months will show us the scale of his potential while Wales, by contrast, need to find someone they can rely on.

Marcus Smith would need to solidify his England place to show he can do the same for the Lions. Has Ireland’s Jack Crowley done enough yet?

McGeechan is an unabashed fan of Finn Russell , and intriguingly he sees a close comparison between the 31-year-old Scot who plays his club rugby for Bath and the Welsh legend Barry John, a playing contemporary of McGeechan’s in the early 1970s.

“The choice of fly-half does shape games,” McGeechan says, “and if you have Finn Russell in your camp, you have someone who won’t be afraid of picking the moments to play.

“But Russell has also got a high percentage of kicking game, and Barry John was the same, all those years ago. Everybody said ‘oh, he’s just a runner, doing all this, that and the other’ – but he’s sat there with the highest percentage of kicks in a game.

“And Finn Russell, in many respects, is very similar. He puts teams in positions where they can do something, and if there isn’t anything on or it needs to be readjusted, it’s often the kicking game that takes the pressure off.

“I’ve been really impressed with Fin Smith. He must be close to being England’s number-one 10, going forward. Having George Ford to guide him this year was perfect for him.

“When you look at Smith’s game, he is physical, and Finn Russell’s physical as well – you have two 10s who are quite happy to mix it, if they get caught, and not pull away from the contact, while having that kicking game that takes pressures off, but also can put pressure back on opponents. That’s been underestimated and underrated in both of them.”

Mobility or bulk in the back five?

The Northampton Saints flyer with Bath heritage set to star for England

The Northampton Saints flyer with Bath heritage set to star for England

This looks likely to be a wonderful area of strength for the Lions – all the more so when you consider how Australia’s stock has fallen in the last few years, way below the prowess of their 1991 and 1999 World Cup-winning teams, or the ones who reached the final in 2003 and 2015.

The mind boggles as you could cheerfully send out a four-nation Lions back five of Maro Itoje, Tadhg Beirne, Jamie Ritchie, Jac Morgan and Ben Earl, to attack the currently woeful Wallabies.

And if that combination smacks of a lack of size, then whistle up one or more of Joe McCarthy, George Martin, Doris, Josh van der Flier and Courtney Lawes – the latter will have spent next season playing for Brive in the French second division, but McGeechan still fancies him as a possible Lions tour captain.

And then what about the English tackling machines Tom Curry and Sam Underhill, and could Ireland’s James Ryan rescale the heights of earlier in his career? The names on McGeechan’s lips currently are Beirne, McCarthy, Itoje, Martin, Earl and Lawes.

There is scope, too, in the next 12 months for strides forward to be made by any or all of Ollie Chessum, Dafydd Jenkins and Scott Cummings in the second row, and Tommy Reffell, Will Connors, Rory Darge, Andy Christie, Jack Dempsey and Chandler Cunningham‑South in the back row, among others.

Lions open home schedule with match against Stamps

2011 lions tour

CFL.ca Staff

VANCOUVER — The Calgary Stampeders and BC Lions meet in a rematch of last year’s Western Semi-Final on Saturday night at BC Place.

It was the Lions who escaped with a 41-30 win in that game but this time around it’s BC who’s looking up at Calgary early in the season.

The Stampeders held on for a 32-24 win over Hamilton in Week 1, while the Lions let a 20-6 second quarter lead slip away in Toronto.

Stamps quarterback Jake Maier is attempting to make it back-to-back strong performances after throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns against the Ticats.

To do it, he’ll have to evade an aggressive Lions front and talented secondary eager for a bounce back effort.

Linemen Joshua Archibald and Marcus Moore each have a sack on the season and are joined by Sione Teuhema and Pete Robertson in making Maier feel pressure in the pocket.

If the offensive line gives Maier time, he’ll be on the lookout for several receivers.

Clark Barnes , Reggie Begelton , Cam Echols and Marken Michel all provide options in the pass game. Barnes and Echols have already caught a Maier touchdown pass.

Garry Peters and Jordan Perryman flank the Lions secondary, while Emmanuel Rugamba had an impressive first game. The three need to find a way to limit the Stamps receivers and avoid big plays.

Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson was happy with the play of his receivers and expects more of the same against another talented secondary.

“It was a good start,” Dickenson told reporters . “We caught the ball well and knew what we were doing. It’s going to be build on it, build on it. One game is just one game. Build on it, get better and take your game to that next level.”

The duo of Dedrick Mills and B.J. Emmons are again responsible for the success of Calgary’s ground game after combining for 110 yards.

When the Lions get the ball in their hands, their focus will be on giving quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. time to make smart decisions. Adams Jr. threw for 363 yards despite being sacked six times in Week 1. If Jarell Broxton and Sukh Chungh can protect their quarterback, another big game could be in order.

When Adams Jr. is able to get the ball off, he’ll try to shy away from the direction of defensive back Demerio Houston. With plenty of familiarity from his time in Winnipeg, Houston has been a thorn in the side of the Lions for years.

Houston will be in tough with the playmaking ability of Alexander Hollins and Justin McInnis. The pair own a combined 193 yards and have proven to be hard to stop.

The play of their receivers is going to be important as Lions have once again stumbled in the run game, accumulating just 60 yards against the Argos. It’s an area of their offence that needs to pick up and take the onus off the arm of Adams Jr.

While getting acclimated with a new playbook can take time, running back William Stanback is tasked with finding his groove in his new surroundings sooner than later.

Linemen Mike Rose and James Vaughters , along with linebacker Micah Awe are the face of the Stamps defence. They’ll provide another test for the Lions offensive line that struggled in Week 1.

Lions head coach Rick Campbell isn’t discouraged by being 0-1 but understands the importance of fixing their mistakes.

“We have to stay away from negative plays, whether it’s turnovers or losing yards,” Campbell told reporters . “I like our team but we definitely have work to do. As a football team we have to take care of the football better.”

A win would not only move the Stamps to a 2-0 record, but would put early distance between themselves and their division rivals.

For a Lions team with high expectations, finding a way to be 1-1 after two games is an important step in the direction they hope to go.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET at BC Place. Fans in Canada can watch on TSN and RDS2. International fans can catch the game on CFL+ while U.S. audiences can watch on CBS Sports.

England expects as 40,000 Three Lions fans get party started ahead of Serbia Euros match

England fans gathered across Germany as manager Gareth Southgate’s team arrived in Gelsenkirchen, with UEFA giving Three Lions supporters 10,000 tickets for Sunday night's 8pm clash with Serbia

The party atmosphere was in full swing on Saturday night as thousands of excited Three Lions fans got ready to roar on their heroes.

They gathered across Germany as manager Gareth Southgate ’s team arrived in Gelsenkirchen. UEFA have given England supporters 10,000 tickets for Sunday night's 8pm clash with Serbia.

But police believe double that number will be in the Arena AufSchalke – with another 30,000 watching on big screens in the city. Most are staying in nearby cities, including Essen, Dortmund, Dusseldorf and Duisberg. In Essen on Saturday, Andy Preston, 54, son James, 25, and James’ pal Mark Harris, all engineers, were soaking up the atmosphere.

Andy, from Preston, Lancashire, said: “I’ve never been to see England in a tournament before. I’m really looking forward to the match. “It has been great so far. We watched the Germany and Scotland game in the fan zone and the German fans were great.”

James added: “The Germans could not believe we were supporting them over Scotland, so we had to explain the rivalry.” Mark, who lives in the northern German town of Bremen, said the locals were looking forward to the party atmosphere the England fans will bring.

“They joke about how drunk the English get and find it funny that the stadiums have had to sell low-alcohol beer for the Serbian game,” he said. Engineer Lee Hunt, 50, and his son Tom, 23, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, arrived in the city on Thursday and were proudly wearing their England shirts as they supped the local lager. Tom said: “I’ve seen these games on TV and I wanted to sample it for myself.” His dad added: “I really want to experience this.”

And he is backing captain Harry Kane to lift the trophy in Berlin on July 14. “I think we have as good as chance as anybody. We need not to sit back, we need to take the game to the opposition,” he said.

The father and son were chatting to taxi driver Peter Udall, 53, from Luton, Beds, who said: “It is not just about the football, it is about the experience. A lot of it is after Covid, I suppose. Life is short, go out and enjoy yourself.” He added: “In my eyes, it is a done deal – we are going to win it. This is the one.”

Julie Popple, 57, and her son Jack, 24, had flown in from their home in Zug, Switzerland. Excited Julie said: “We are here for the big game against Serbia and we are hoping for a big win.”

Son Jack lives with Serbian girlfriend Tatjana Stalovic, 23, and she is convinced her country will triumph. But he said: “It will be a tough game but I can’t see Serbia beating us.”

Kevin Coomer, 38, arrived from Bristol with his dad Gary, 69. The electric company boss admitted it was supposed to be a Father’s Day treat for his dad – but his old man had ended up paying. Kevin laughed: “I did buy him an England hat and a shirt.”

The dad and lad pair were with pals Matt Rolles, 54, and Alex Stell, 30. Matt, an insurance broker, said: “It is fabulous. There are a great group of fans here.”

History teacher Adam Nixon, 22, had flown to Amsterdam with a group of 10 ex-school pals from Fleetwood, Lancs, before catching a train to Essen. They all have tickets for tonight’s game. Adam said: “This is the best. I’m loving it and I’m loving life.”

Company director Jamie Holbook, 49, from Grimsby, North Lincolnshire, said: “I’ve got tickets for the first two games and can’t wait to see what this England team can do.

“I’m sure the atmosphere will build over the next few days and England have a great chance if players like Jude Bellingham are on form.” His pal David Blake, 57, a care manager, said: “Every England fan I’ve seen here is looking forward to the football and the beer. It’s going to be a great party.”

Leeds University fashion student Alexia Zamani, 22, of Oxford, said: “I’m really confident. I reckon it’s going to be 3-1 and Harry Kane will be on the score sheet. We have definitely got the players to win the whole thing.”

In Gelsenkirchen, Bournemouth fan Alan Marsh, 41, a scaffolder, and his son Tommy, 10, were with Arsenal fan Aaron Drayton, 39, a heating engineer, and his son Theo, eight. Alan said: “We drove over to Gelsenkirchen from Bournemouth. It took 11 hours but it was worth it.”

Aaron said: “We haven’t got tickets for the match but we wanted the boys to experience being in the fan zone. We are all really looking forward to it. Hopefully it will be a memory of a lifetime.” Captain Kane echoed their comments last night, telling reporters: “We are here to win it. There will be nothing better for us, and the nation, if we do that.

“In past tournaments we have done a lot of things well and we’ve made the country proud. I think we have earned the right to be classed as one of the favourites.”

Those without tickets are being advised to go to a fan zone at Trabrennbahn racecourse, where organisers have shipped in 80,000 litres of beer, 40,000 bottles of soft drinks, 7.5 tonnes of chips and 32,000 sausages. German police believe around 10,000 Serbs have tickets for the game, which is designated “high risk” because of the threat of violence from 500 Serbian yobs.

After playing Serbia, England go back to their base near Blankenhein before tackling Den-mark next Thursday in Frankfurt. Their final Group C game is against Slovenia, in Cologne on June 25.
