When I say that this was the best concert I've ever been to, I mean this is literally the BEST concert I've ever been to and I've seen quite a few different singers.

Conrad has this stage presence that allows him to show how grateful he actually is to you for coming to his shows and he is just an amazing singer and performer. He knows how to engage his audience and how to interact me them. He has the ability to make you feel welcome and special, as he speaks to his audience like he is just one of our friends. The show I attended in Melbourne at the Forum was so amazing and I would recommend seeing him 100%. I definitely won't hesitate to buy tickets when he tours again, he's fantastic live with an awesome voice!

Guest Playlist: The songs that inspired Conrad Sewell’s second record PRECIOUS

Conrad Sewell

ARIA Award-winning, multi-platinum-selling singer-songwriter  Conrad   Sewell   recently announced that his second album, PRECIOUS will be released on the 3rd March, 2023.

It’s one to look forward to, from an artist who has garnered over one billion streams for hits such as “Healing Hands”, “Remind Me”, “Hold Me Up” and his ARIA-winning single “Start Again”. Since he broke through domestically, Conrad has been busy on the international stage touring with the likes of Ed Sheeran , Maroon 5 , and Kygo .

His new material is beautifully crafted. We’ve had three tasters so far. With the soul rock “God Save The Queen”, the anthemic “Make Me A Believe” and his most recent release, the tender ode to first love, “Caroline”, PRECIOUS is shaping up as an album laced with emotional touchstones, as well as upbeat rock and roll.

Conrad worked with some incredible musicians on the album. Amongst those was   Zane Carney (John Mayer’s guitarist), Adam MacDougall (The Black Crowes’ keyboardist), Victor Indrizzo (Alanis Morissette’s drummer), Aiden Moore (Justin Timberlake’s bassist) & Regiment Horns (Justin Timberlake’s horn section). It’s an insanely talented group of musicians.

Conrad has compiled for the AU a playlist of tracks that have inspired PRECIOUS. Crank up the volume, press <Play> and read on. There are some classic tunes here!

“You Can’t Hurry Love” – Phil Collins

This song has a great rhythm. Originally done by The Supremes but covered brilliantly by Phil Collins! I’ve always wanted to write a song like this that had a simple Motown groove. To me, this is such a happy song that makes you want to get up and dance.

“Fire and Rain” – James Taylor

This is one of my all-time favourite songs. The emotion in James Taylor’s voice and the storytelling has always been a big inspiration for me. Songs you’ll hear on my new record PRECIOUS , such as “Tell Mum I Love Her” and “Caroline” drew a lot of inspiration from this song.

“Open Arms” – Journey

To me, Steve Perry’s vocal on this song is exceptional. There are a few moments on my new record where I really tried to push my range and it was inspired by the early Journey records.

“Make Me A Believer” is one of them – I pushed my range into a key that I’ve never sung in before (High E in the key of C).

There’s a real intimacy in “Blood Sugar” that was heavily inspired by Steve Perry.

“Maneater” – Hall and Oates

I’m very inspired by Hall and Oates in general. I really love their classic pop songwriting and they are so musically intelligent at the same time. One of the songs on PRECIOUS was written with Rob Thomas, and we really drew from the iconic beat of “Maneater”.

“Stars” – Simply Red

Simply Red was my Mothers favourite singer when I was a kid and I would sing a lot of Simply Red songs when I was growing up. This one in particular is one of my favourites of all time. I am constantly trying to write a chorus like this, that instantly lifts you up and takes you to a new place.

“Mandolin Rain”  –  Bruce Hornsby and The Range

Bruce Hornsby is one of the greatest piano players ever, I often start most of my songs on piano and am constantly trying to write riffs that are instantly iconic. Adam MacDougall who played all the keys on my was constantly being told to steal much as possible from Bruce Hornsby lol

“Feelin’ Alright” – Joe Cocker

My fav song on the new record is the title track Precious and this was heavily inspired by Joe Cocker. It may be hard to hear at first, but Precious was originally a ballad and after being pushed by my producer to up the tempo of the song, it took on a funky, soulful, Joe Cocker-esque life of it’s own. It felt like Joe Cocker entered my body and took over my vocals for 6 mins. You’ll have to wit for the album to come next year to hear it!

“Jack & Diane” – John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp is a timeless songwriter. There’s this really wholesome, middle America approach to his songwriting and I feel that in some of my own music. Songs like Ferris Wheel and Caroline have similar narratives to those iconic songs from the 90s.

Because I grew up listening to these songs, I really feel like the music I write is inspired by those similar stories that everyone can relate to, whether that be your high school sweetheart or growing up in a small town.

I’m never afraid of letting the truth get in the way of a good story.

“Start Me Up” – The Rolling Stones

As I recorded the album predominately live, TRS were always our North on the compass as to what to do – whether that was arrangements or how the boys in the band were playing.

There’s something so incredible how TRS play and make it seem so effortless but at the same time, there’s so much swag. We pulled a lot of inspiration for the new album from the gear that we used, to the different sounds that we pulled from arguably the greatest band there ever was.

“For Once In My Life” – Stevie Wonder

Stevie is one of my biggest influences of all time. Vocally and musically he’s touched me more than any other artist. All the horns you’ll hear on the new record were heavily inspired by early Motown; the funky basslines, rhythms and textures of Stevie’s music is something we tried to incorporate as much as possible while recording.

Interview with Conrad Sewell

Post Image

Conrad Sewell may have the down-to-earth candor of a pub singer, but his voice belongs in stadiums. “I still get butterflies just before going on,” Sewell says with a glint in his eye, his golden hair peeking under a wide-brimmed black hat. “It’s like jumping out of a plane. I love it.”

The acclaimed Brisbane-born singer and songwriter, 34, has been singing professionally since age 12, long enough to appreciate the effect his voice has on people. Case in point, 2015’s “Start Again,” a spare piano ballad showcasing Sewell’s powerhouse range, went to Number One in Australia from his debut studio album, LIFE.

So when it came to recording his long-awaited follow-up, PRECIOUS (out March 3 via Sony Music Entertainment Australia) Sewell was adamant: it needed to sound raw. “I’ve never sounded as good on a record as I do in person,” he says. “There’s just a power there that doesn’t come across any other way.”

Sewell started with a personal playlist of 60s, 70s and 80s soul pop and rock greats—Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, George Michael, and more—as his musical north star. Then he spent six weeks in Jackson Browne’s Santa Monica studio, where he wrote, produced, and cut all of the new material the old-fashioned way: in-person and with a cadre of like-minded soul addicts, including John Mayer guitarist Zane Carney and Black Crowes’ keyboardist Adam MacDougall.

“There were definitely those moments where we’re thinking, ‘Are people going to get it? Are these slick enough for radio?’” Sewell says. “But then we were like, you know what, we need to make this the album we’ve been dreaming of. There’s a lot of heart in this music, and it’s important for the world to hear some stuff like that now.”

The stripped down approach with PRECIOUS represented personal unburdening for Sewell—of all the expectations he never felt he was meeting in the music industry. Sewell signed his first major label deal at age 17. Sewell had the whole package: boy-band good looks, endless charisma, and a pliable soprano that conveyed the emotional depth of someone twice his age.

He spent years touring the world and finetuning his sound, first in the pop band The Frets, then the rock band Sons of Midnight. Sewell rebranded as a solo act after his song with the Norwegian DJ/producer Kygo, “Firestone,” ignited the charts across Europe. Before long, Sewell was opening arenas for superstars like Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, and Jess Glynne.

But in retrospect, Sewell questioned whether he was artistically ready to walk through the doors that kept opening for him. “I was like a puppet,” Sewell says. “I loved to write, so when someone would tell me to write an album like Calvin Harris, or Sam Smith, or whatever, I did it. But when it didn’t connect, I questioned everything. Is it me? Am I not good enough? What am I missing?”

After a long period of disillusionment, Sewell made it to the other side. PRECIOUS tells that intensely personal story, scars and all, from a sweeping array of musical vantage points: there are orchestral swells, Houses of the Holy guitar solos, Daptone-style blues, and even bagpipes.

“Ego,” Sewell says, is the song that encapsulates the album. The bluesy track begins with hushed brass and syncopation that slaps you across the face. Sewell enters the confessional and holds nothing back. “I’m the ultimate people pleaser,” Sewell says, “And this song is really about me getting over those tendencies, letting go of my ego, and having an honest look at myself.”

PRECIOUS kicks off with the vibrant punch of “God Save The Queen,” a Stones-y party jam about shaking off the invisible chains holding you down. “Ferris Wheel” is Sewell’s ode to big, harmonica-blessed heartland rock. It’s hard not to think of John Mellencamp or Bruce Springsteen as Sewell sings of flashbacks and fairgrounds over a sun-dappled southern guitar. Similarly, “Believer” thrums the electric intensity of chasing an unrequited love. “Said you would leave me for dead, but I woke up in your bed,” Sewell purrs.

Many of the songs find Sewell channeling his pain into the desire for romantic redemption that may never come, as on the spectral power ballad “Rolling Thunder. “Just know that we’re broken/ So many words left unspoken,” he sings.

“Caroline” offers the colder side of “Ferris Wheel.” It’s a gorgeous string and acoustic-guitar ode to the long drives and glistening night skies of young love. “Slipping Away” follows that nostalgic thread (“If I could hold you again, I would/ Gotta lay down my pride”) but with a sensual, ‘70s flair. Here, Sewell’s falsetto reaches Bee Gee altitudes, as he basks in the glow of a ripping saxophone.

On “Blood Sugar” Sewell wields his heart like a ten-pound hammer. “Losing you was not my plan,” he sings. “It’s safe to say/ It comes in waves.”

All of this emotionality builds to “Precious,” the album’s undeniable tour de force. The song was originally a ballad until Adam suggested doing a take that was faster, rougher around the edges. “I swear to God, it was like Joe Cocker came into the room and took over my body for six minutes,” Sewell says, still incredulous. “I started singing in this different voice, freestyling all the verses and everything that came out of my mouth just made perfect sense.”

Just as Sewell said when he set out to make this record, the final version is nearly identical to that raw cut. And with all due respect to the ghost of Joe Cocker, Sewell wasn’t possessed in that take. He was experiencing, maybe for the first time, what it is to be truly free.

“My gut’s always right but I never trusted it,” Sewell says in his gentle, self-deprecating way. “It took hitting fucking rock bottom for me to realize my music depends on me believing in myself.”

Fresh on the heels of breaking chart records, Taylor Swift has announced a new tour with several stops in California after the release of her tenth original studio album "Midnights."

The US leg of "The Eras Tour" kicks off in the spring with stops in the Bay Area and Los Angeles.

"I'm enchanted to announce my next tour: Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour, a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!)," Swift wrote on social media with the announcement. "The first leg of the tour will be in stadiums across the US, with international dates to be announced as soon as we can!"

She also wrote that she was "Feeling like the luckiest person alive because I get to take these brilliant artists out on tour with me," as she announced that fellow artists Paramore, Beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, Girl in Red, Muna, Haim, Gayle, Gracie Abrams and Owenn would be joining her.

An unknown amount of registrants will receive a code on Monday, Nov. 14 that will have exclusive access to purchase tickets on Tuesday, Nov. 15, starting at 10 a.m. local venue time.

Swift's "Midnights" breaks records

Thanks to her new album "Midnights," Swift became the first artist to simultaneously claim all top ten spots on the Billboard Hot 100 list .

Swift is the first artist to ever accomplish the feat in Billboard's 64-year history.

She beat Drake, who in September 2021 claimed nine of the Hot 100's top 10 spots for a week. According to Billboard, the Hot 100 list "blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data."

She also became Spotify's most-streamed artist over a 24-hour period upon the release of the record.
