Bleed From Within
Bleed from Within have been to hell and back in the last two years but these Glasgow bruisers are no strangers to enduring hardship. When a global pandemic threatened to shut down the release plans for the band’s fourth studio album, Fracture, the lads responded by collectively raising five middle fingers and pressing on, despite facing pressures to postpone. If venues were unable to open their doors, Bleed from Within would find a way of delivering the headbang to the front doors of their fans instead.
Viral Hysteria, a full-production live stream event to promote the release of Fracture, was the answer, allowing the band to connect with their fans while the industry was shut down. Now available as a live album, the self-produced Viral Hysteria is a testament to the DIY ethics of the band’s individual strengths. Visuals and production are handled by guitarist Craig Gowans alongside vocalist Scott Kennedy and bassist David Provan, with Provan meticulously hand drawing the band’s artwork, too. Drummer, Ali Richardson, heads up the band’s marketing and management, while guitarist Steven Jones doubles up as a recording engineer and social media manager. To this day, all of their tracks are still self-produced.
It’s no surprise that this unstoppable riff machine continues to crush forward at such a frantic pace – there is no putting the breaks on the heaviest band to ever emerge from Scotland. The band’s reputation as one of the most formidable forces in modern metal has earned them tour slots with Megadeth, Lamb Of God, Testament and Heaven Shall Burn, to name just a few. And with over 25 million streams for Fracture , the Glaswegian metalheads are only growing stronger and more popular with every new release.
Their latest single, I Am Damnation , is the band’s heaviest yet, the culmination of two years hard work that embodies their artistic might. ‘True spirit like this is hard to find’ , as Kennedy’s screams ring out in the verses. Armed with the learnings of evolving their sound over the last decade without ever losing sight of their DIY roots, this is Bleed from Within at their very best. With the backing of a new deal with Nuclear Blast Records and a new album on the way in 2022, there’s no denying the band’s inevitable next steps are world domination.

Bleed From Within: "The new wave of metal is already here"
From over £20,000 debt to almost accidentally glassing Dave Mustaine, Bleed From Within have had plenty of scrapes with oblivion and always come back stronger
Dial the clocks back to 2013, and it looked like Bleed From Within had the world at their feet. They had signed to Century Media and their third album, Uprising , was being met with acclaim. In a glowing 9/10 review, Hammer reviewer Nik Young described it as “vicious, driven, and irresistibly headbang-worthy.”
To top things off, they were on tour as the main support for Megadeth, where they hoped to learn some lessons from the thrash legends. Chief among them: don’t piss off a rock star’s bodyguard, particularly when they can bounce you off the walls like a ping-pong ball.
“Dave Mustaine requested we go to his dressing room…” BFW vocalist Scott Kennedy starts, a grin lighting his face up like the sun. “Ali [Richardson, drummer] burst in with a bottle of [caffeinated fortified wine] Buckfast and almost threw it in Mustaine’s face! Like, ‘’Ey lad, you ever tried this?’”
Ali sinks into his seat with the look of a man who has heard this story a million times and never gets any less embarrassed. Scott forges ahead undeterred, hooting with laughter as he recounts Dave Mustaine – the man who reportedly made Megadeth’s debut album on a diet of hamburgers and heroin – had to explain there wasn’t much he hadn’t tried.
“Aye,” Scott says, “But have ya tried this ?”
The story speaks volumes about the band’s enthusiasm and inexperience at the time. This was evident almost 18 months later, when a deal-gone-wrong plunged the band into over £20,000 worth of debt. For a bunch of 20-somethings whose finances were – at that point at least – predicated on them being able to drop tools and go on tour for weeks on end, it seemed like a death sentence. Luckily, the music saw them through.
“It was too much to just walk away from, especially given what we’d already achieved,” Ali says.

Bleed From Within started life in 2005 as a jam project while its members were still teenagers. Based out of a local community centre in Hamilton – a town 15 miles southeast of Glasgow – its members would cover bands such as Lamb Of God and Pantera.
“ Ashes Of The Wake was my holy grail,” Scott enthuses, while Ali professes that “the four-count at the start of Fucking Hostile was the moment I put the clarinet in the bin and picked up drumsticks.”
Over time, they began writing their own songs and bringing individual influences into the mix – a touch of Gothenburg here, shades of The Black Dahlia Murder there. They played anywhere that would host them, and when the local gigs dried up, they hit the road.
“We’d be thinking we’d fuckin’ made it because we were going out in a 15-seat minibus, gear all over the seats around where we’d sleep,” Ali says with a scoff. “You’d have eight cans before going onstage; if I could see some of that footage back, I’d be embarrassed beyond belief.”
Still, their efforts paid off, and in 2009 they released their debut record, Humanity . Aware that riches weren’t about to drop into their laps, the band held down part-time jobs at restaurants, bars and car washes to keep cash coming in. They soon realised that wasn’t going to work out, however.
“Every time we went on tour, we’d come back not knowing if we still had jobs,” Scott admits.
To remedy this, the members built careers outside Bleed From Within to ensure they had some level of financial stability – three members now own a company that specialises in motion graphics.
“The paths we’ve chosen are based on keeping the band going, essentially,” Ali explains. It wasn’t the rock’n’roll fantasy of sex, parties and swimming pools of Irn-Bru they might have hoped for, but it kept the dream alive. Now they just had to get past the next obstacle: gatekeepers.
In the early 2010s British metal scene, bands such as Bring Me The Horizon and Asking Alexandria were raked over the coals for everything from the way they dressed to the bands they toured with. Bleed From Within didn’t escape unscathed. Haters didn’t care that Bleed From Within were fusing turn-of-the-millennium Gothenburg with the neck-juddering groove of Pantera and Lamb Of God, or that their sound owed as much to classic thrash as it did to metalcore or deathcore.
What they cared about was that Scott ‘looked like Oli Sykes’ (he had a fringe), and that the band weren’t grizzled veterans of the metal scene (despite the fact they had been touring relentlessly for years by the time they started appearing on big bills). In their eyes – and to use their words – Bleed From Within were ‘a cookie-cutter shitty metal band for angsty teenage kids’.
“I’ve not bothered my arse with what people say about our band,” Ali says sagely, sounding like the Scottish Dalai Lama. “It was always our appearance that seemed to get judged above all else – especially because we were a group of small guys going out on these huge stages where you’d have folks like Dave Mustaine, Gene Hoglan or Chuck Billy. We’re wee guys compared to them!”
Forced to take a three-year break from touring while they resolved their myriad legal and financial issues, Bleed From Within re-emerged in 2018 as a band reborn. With both Era and its 2020 follow-up, Fracture , they reasserted their place alongside the likes of While She Sleeps and Architects as one of the hottest metal bands in the UK.
Appearances at Download Pilot and Bloodstock over summer 2021 saw them greeted as conquering heroes, crowds chanting their name and singing along. Then, as if to prove just how far they had come, those scenes repeated later in the year when Bleed From Within played some of their biggest shows to date, supporting Bullet For My Valentine in UK arenas before embarking on a sold-out headline tour in their own right.
“The crowd were singing so loud every single night, for every single song,” Scott says. “It left me speechless.”
“Each show seemed to be more wild than the last,” Ali adds excitedly. “Crowdsurfers, pits and sing-alongs the whole time. In Glasgow they had to stop counting the surfers after track three. The next few years are going to be fucking mental."
As if to illustrate that point, the band’s sixth album, Shrine , is their most ambitious to date. Lead single I Am Damnation set the stage in November by boasting some of the biggest riffs and hooks of the band’s career, but that’s just a small taste of what is to come.
The characteristic PMA that has powered the band through dark times thus far is still present and correct, but is joined by musings on the nature of mortality that naturally come with age. Levitate ’s soaring symphonies are at odds with its lyrical content concerning dementia, based on Scott’s experiences with his grandmother. Elsewhere, Killing Time was inspired by an incident where Ali attempted to resuscitate a heart attack victim, although sadly in vain.
“It really made me reflect on my mortality and what I do with the time I’ve got,” he admits.
And then there’s the music. With industrial beats, electronica and full symphonies courtesy of the Parallax Orchestra – who’ve worked with BMTH and Architects – Shrine could well be a modern British classic, up there with chart-raiding epics such as You Are We , Sempiternal , or For Those That Wish To Exist – a record that topped the UK charts in February 2021.
“Bands like Architects getting to No.1 in the charts is so exciting,” Scott enthuses.
“It’s exciting to have any guitar music in the charts, even if it’s not metal,” Ali adds. “Just look at Bring Me The Horizon – playing to thousands of people around the country and collaborating with Ed Sheeran. One of the biggest artists on the planet collaborating with a heavy band.”
Like the spider in Scottish folklore that wouldn’t give up its attempts to weave a web, inspiring Robert The Bruce to fight for – and ultimately win – Scottish independence, Bleed From Within have faced their setbacks and obstacles with a sense of perseverance and pragmatism. With Shrine on the horizon, at this point the sky’s the limit – but the band aren’t about to get ahead of themselves.
“The bad situations we’ve got in as a band have come from chasing a dream and not living for the reality,” Scott says soberly. That doesn’t mean they’ve lost their sense of ambition, though.
“When bands like Rammstein, Iron Maiden and Metallica are no more, we’ll see a real change. Bring Me The Horizon will be headlining festivals those bands would usually do and everybody else will jump up, too,” says Ali. “The naysayers are going to be fucking furious, but they have to deal with it. The new wave of metal is already in front of them. Get your head out of your arse!”

IN CONVERSATION: Craig ‘Goonzi’ Gowans of Bleed from Within
Welcome to In Conversation , a special interview column on the site where we sit down with artists and dive deep into everything music. This week, Max sat down with Goonzi of Bleed From Within to discuss touring Shrine , bagpipes and travelling worldwide.
Max: New album, around the corner and it’s the first on Nuclear Blast. How are you feeling about the launch?
Goonzi: Really excited at this point. It has crept up on us. Really happy with how the album turned out, and it’s exciting times for the band.
Max: Is it a different experience now, being able to go out and tour this?
Goonzi: It was weird for us releasing the album during lockdown, 2020. In a way it was also our best year as a band. We got a record deal, did the livestream, and Fracture was our most well-received and successful album yet. In a lot of ways, 2020 was a weird year for us. It has turned out quite nicely for this one, right before the summer festival run, which means we can play some of the new ones live. It’s going to be good being able to see the action and people’s faces right away, as it’s really hard to see how the album is going down when you can’t play shows and see people’s reactions. You’re relying on YouTube reaction videos I guess. That’s what we pretty much did during lockdown. It will be good to see how songs go down live as that’s a huge part of our writing process, seeing how songs go down live.
Powered by RedCircle
Max: It must be weird going to where you were pre-pandemic to post-pandemic, with all this new music tour and a bigger fanbase for Bleed From Within?
Goonzi: There’s been a lot more breathing room for people to get used to the songs on Fracture and become familiar with them. With Shrine it’s going to be new and it will be hard making setlists. The Shrine tour we’re doing in December in the EU was originally the Fracture tour. That will be weird, as we’ve had to rename it but we’ve had to rename it the Shrine tour. At Download Festival we have 25 minutes, which is five songs. That would be all the singles from the album, but we can’t play all singles and will have to play some old stuff.
Max: Would you say there’s a bigger melodic push or did it just happen over the two records?
Goonzi: It’s something we’ve been exploring on purpose. We try not to think too hard when we’re writing them and let outside influences come in too much. There was definitely an effort to step up the melody but the album is quite diverse. I think we make a conscious effort to make all our albums diverse and balance the heavy with the melodic and the groove. We try to make it more of an album listening experience than focusing on each single.
Max: Is it still Scott doing all the clean vocals?
Goonzi: It’s a mix between Scott and Steven . Steven does the completely clean stuff and we layer it up with Scott’s voice. Scott has been exploring the pitched scream vocals and the gearing towards the melodic side. Steven is the producer basically and vocal production is the strong point. His vocal production shines on this record with the layering. His and Scott’s voice is a wall of sound, he knows how to get that balance right.
Max: Do you think going full clean could happen in the future?
Goonzi: I don’t know, I think Scott would love that, as he always goes on how he doesn’t listen to metal and only listens to emo and all that. I think he would just love to do clean singing. The vocals have to match the riffs, and the riffs have to match the vocals. I’m not going to stop writing heavy riffs.
Max: You have a very distinct riff style, I love how that sounds. Was that a style that developed or time or a conscious effort?
Goonzi: It’s a sum of my influences from when I was younger and more modern stuff creeping which naturally comes out that way. Every guitar player is inspired by different group of guitarists and bands, which will directly affect the sound and the mix of influences that make it unique.
Max: What would you say those influences are?
Goonzi: The main core bands I go back to are the ones I begun listening to when I started playing guitar; Lamb of Gods , Pantera , Chaimaira . I think it’s called the new wave of American metal, bands like Killswitch and Shadows Fall . That was when I was growing up and got into metal, that style really effected me and still does. I go back and listen to those albums still.
Max: What sets Shrine apart from the rest of your discography?
Goonzi: The song-writing is naturally progressing the way it would. What sets its apart is that we got a few more people involved sonically. We have a string quartet and a guy called Simon Dobson , who did the recent Abbey Roads with Architects . The strings take it sonically to a different level. Then a guy called Jamie Finch who makes the senses and weird noises you hear throughout the album, he does all that. The combination of those two guys involved takes it sonically to the next level. We‘re thinking how to get them involved in the writing process.
Max: Do you think you would go further into a theatrical direction?
Goonzi: Possibly, I’m down for anything. We’re at the stage in our career where we can begin experimenting and doing weird shit, ’cause why not.
Max: What would you do if you were given free rein?
Goonzi: Bagpipes, I’m going to sneak a couple of bagpipes on there. If it can be done tastefully, I will try and sneak some bagpipes on there.
Max: You’ve got Download and your tour coming up, what are you most excited for in regards to the band?
Goonzi: Touring and making up for lost time. There’s a lot of places we’ve never played. There were a lot of shows in 2020 we never announced, and there were countries that all got called off. I want to explore and meet new fans and make new fans, then start writing the next one. It’s good to now, when you’re in a good place and in writing mode from the last album. Summer festival seasons is a good inspiration for me as you get to see a bunch of bands and how they do things and see the reactions for our new songs. I’m really excited for that.
Max: Getting ahead of the curve is always good, especially if you’re still in that writing mode.
Goonzi: You have to be in this day and age. People expect music a lot quicker than they used to. We used to take our time writing albums. I think we now have it down to a fine art and how to get on with it. We now know how each other work and the best way to go about writing.
Max: Is there anywhere specifically you didn’t get to go that you’re looking forward to visiting?
Goonzi: The US has always been something that’s on our radar and we’ve never been able to make it there. It feels like every other band in the world and we’ve never been so that would be a good one to tick off the list. I’d love to go back to Asia, do more of Asia. We only did Japan and China, so it would be good to explore more of Asia and Australia.
Max: How was the experience of playing in Asia?
Goonzi: Japan and China were very different tours. Japan was only four shows and we had days off and you got to sightsee and chill out with people. China was eight shows in nine days and they were all over the country; so it was up at 4am, go on a train for six hours, sleep for three hours and back up train for seven hours. It was just constant travel and we didn’t get to stop and enjoy, so it would be good to go back and get a bit of sightseeing in. We did get to go see the Great Wall of China and the panda sanctuary. We almost got no sleep so the whole trip for us is just a big blur. We can hardly even remember most of it just because we were so tired or asleep.
Max: Are there any bands you’re looking forward to seeing over the summer festival period?
Goonzi: The next festival we’re playing is Mystic Festival in Poland and the line-up on our stage is just ridiculous. It’s us, Malevolence , Mastodon and Opeth , which is just insane. So that whole day will be mental and I will pack up my guitar as quickly as I can so I can go watch other bands and hang out. We’re playing a festival in Sweden and Electric Callboy are headlining, that’s on our pre-show playlist. So our mission is to hangout out with them.
Max: Are you going to be touring a lot in the next year or so?
Goonzi: There’s nothing mega booked in, touring is still finding its feet a bit in Europe but the UK is pretty much back to normal. We did two UK tours at the end of last year, so we’re going to chill on the UK a bit and play some bigger venues when we’re back. Right now we’re going to focus on Europe as we last toured there in December of 2019.
Many thanks to Goonzi for sitting down for a chat with us, and you can pre-order Shrine here .

BLEED FROM WITHIN ‘SHRINE DELUXE EDITION’ Is Out Now
+ release lyric video for new single 'overthrone'.
13 November 2023 The Rockpit
Bleed From Within have had an extraordinary year. They’ve just stepped off of the Lamb Of God Headbangers Boat cruise, following on from a colossal summer run which took in both headline shows, performances with Heaven Shall Burn and festival appearances at the likes of Brutal Assault (Czech Republic), Summer Breeze (Germany) and Alcatraz (Belgium), finishing up with a 13-date tour supporting Trivium across the UK. This was all on top of a hugely successful debut American tour earlier this year with August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada.
To celebrate this exceptional year, Bleed From Within have released their Shrine Deluxe Edition today, alongside a new single titled ‘Overthrone’, which is accompanied by a lyric video.
Their stunning latest studio album Shrine was released in summer 2022, marking the band’s most groundbreaking work to-date and staking out Bleed From Within ‘s bold intent. The Scottish 5-piece claiming their position as the most exciting prospect in modern metal.
Steven Jones from the band stated, ”Upon releasing ‘Shrine’ in June 2022, it’s safe to say that none of us expected what the following months would bring. It’s been a hell of a year, with our most rigorous touring schedule yet putting us in places we’ve dreamed of since we started the band. This era of Bleed From Within is something we have worked so hard toward, and in this moment we are extremely grateful to all those who have made it possible. To all of our fans who fill the rooms and sing the words, to the team behind the scenes who keep the cogs moving on tour, in the studio and everywhere between, and to the creative minds that help us bring our music to life – thank you. 17 months since its original release, we are so proud to now present this limited and deluxe edition of ‘Shrine’, featuring all of the songs that were recorded during the sessions. Here’s to the months and years ahead.’’

Bleed From Within released their stunning studio album Shrine in June 2022. It was the most fiercely anticipated record of their career, and their most groundbreaking work to date.
Shrine was recorded at Real World Studios and at Bleed From Within’s HQ, UK. The record was self-produced. Mixing was handled by Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood and Sebastian Sendon, with engineering handled by Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood and Bleed From Within. The Shrine artwork was created by David Provan, with layout by Simon Atkinson.
Bleed From Within have been to hell and back, but they are no strangers to enduring hardship. When a global pandemic threatened to shut down their plans, the Glaswegians collectively raised five middle fingers and pressed on. It’s no surprise that this unstoppable riff machine continues to crush forward at such a frantic pace – there’s no putting the breaks on the heaviest band to ever emerge from Scotland.
The band’s reputation as one of the most formidable forces in modern metal has earned them tour slots with Megadeth, Lamb Of God, Testament and Heaven Shall Burn, to name just a few. 2021 saw them dominate the UK live scene; selling out their largest ever headline tour in November, capturing hearts on Bullet For My Valentine’s arena tour, slay a Lamb Of God livestream support slot, alongside (literally) blazing performances at Download Festival and Bloodstock Festival.
Shrine has taken the most graft to put together of any record in their catalogue, challenging their self-perception on both personal and technical levels – the culmination of two years hard work that embodies their artistic might. Armed with the learnings of evolving their sound over the last decade without ever losing sight of their DIY roots, this is Bleed From Within at their very best. There’s no denying the band’s inevitable next steps are world domination, with Shrine a turning point moment.
Bleed From Within are: Scott Kennedy – Vocals Craig Gowans – Guitar Steven Jones – Guitar David Provan – Bass Ali Richardson – Drums

Bleed From Within - New Video For "Killing Time" And Tour Dates
- Bleed From Within
Image: Bleed From Within - Official press photo
This Monday, Bleed From Within released an immense, energetic video for their track ' Killing Time ' from their latest album Shrine , which consists of some tour highlights from the last few months. 'Killing Time', incidentally, has become a setlist favourite during their recent performances.
Ali Richardson, the band's drummer, explains:
"As we approach the end of the 'Shrine' cycle, we've been looking back on the incredible experiences of the last few years. This song, personal yet universal, has emerged as a fan favourite. We are thrilled that 'Killing Time' now has a permanent place in our live set and is celebrated in this video. The video, filmed and edited by our friend and long-time collaborator Tom Armstrong, is a true celebration of our recent touring years."
