Sunny Day Real Estate Announce Diary Anniversary Tour

Sunny Day Real Estate

Sunny Day Real Estate have announced a tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of 1994’s Diary . The band will start with three shows in March before picking things back up in May. The last stretch of the tour takes place between August and October. See Sunny Day Real Estate’s tour dates below.

Along with the tour news, Sunny Day Real Estate have announced that they’ll release their first new song since 2014’s “ Lipton Witch .” The new track, “Novum Vetus,” is out Friday, January 26. According to a press release, the idea behind the song dates back to the late 1990s. Singer Jeremy Enigk, guitarist, Dan Hoerner, and drummer William Goldsmith made “Novum Vetus” with guitarist Greg Suran and bassist Chris Jordan at Seattle’s London Bridge Studio.

While recording “Novum Vetus,” Sunny Day Real Estate made some more new music: an updated version of Diary that comes out May 3. They worked on Diary at London Bridge Studio over a span of six days, according to the press release.

Sunny Day Real Estate reunited back in 2022 for their first shows since 2010. The band played more concerts in 2023.

Despite the fact that they never did meet with huge commercial success, Sunny Day Real Estate can at least claim to be titans of their own genre; before the term emo was hijacked by the media in the mid-noughties and completely arbitrarily applied to the likes of My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy, it referred to a nineties scene in the U.S. that saw the likes of The Promise Ring, American Football and Texas Is the Reason making incendiary guitar music - think indie rock, but heavier, and with an unyielding emotional edge. In 2009, eight years on from their initial dissolution, the stars finally aligned in a manner that allowed a Sunny Day reunion; one of the many factors keeping them from touring throughout the noughties was bassist Nate Mendel’s obligations with his other band, Foo Fighters. They toured the world extensively to rave reviews, playing sets that spanned their career and tearing through the classics with an energy that, if anything, was even more visceral than it had been first time around. They intended to record a new album once they got off the road, but the sessions ended in failure, with just one new song, ‘Lipton Witch’, emerging; officially speaking, the band are now dissolved again, but don’t be surprised to see them play further live dates in the future.

Sunny Day Real Estate Plot First Tour in 12 Years

By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Emo favorites Sunny Day Real Estate will embark on their first tour in 12 years. The reunited band —  vocalist/guitarist Jeremy Enigk, guitarist Dan Hoerner and drummer William Goldsmith — will tour with unnamed musicians in lieu of original bassist Nate Mendel, the Foo Fighters member who is not slated to join the reunion. Tickets go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

The 25-date trek kicks off in Lawrence, Kansas on Sept. 13 at Liberty Hall and runs through December, with dates in major cities through the Midwest, East Coast and southern states before it concludes on the West Coast in their hometown of Seattle at the Moore Theatre on Dec.18. The run includes previously announced appearances at Riot Fest in Chicago on Sept. 17 and Furnace Fest in Birmingham, Alabama on Sept. 24.

The influential band released its debut album Diary in 1994 and disbanded before its 1995 follow-up known as The Pink Album LP hit shelves. Since then, various members have reunited in different iterations. Mendel and Goldsmith joined Foo Fighters (where Mendel remains, while Goldsmith left in 1997). Enigk released his debut solo album Return of the Frog Queen in 1996. Enigk, Mendel and Goldsmith reunited to form the Fire Theft and dropped a self-titled album in 2003.

Sunny Day Real Estate reformed without Mendel and released How It Feels to Be Something On in 1998 and The Rising Tide dropped in 2000. The full original band with Mendel last assembled for tour dates in 2009-2010. Last year, Goldsmith released “ Supervised Suffering ” from new band Assertion’s debut LP, Intermission , which was his first musical outing in a decade.

“This year is the 30th anniversary of our first record, Diary! We wanted to do something special to celebrate these songs that have brought us so much over the years,” shared Sunny Day Real Estate in an Instagram post . “Not only are we excited to announce a US tour of the record in its entirety, we thought it would be fun to re-record the full album live in-studio as a better representation of how we play the songs now as we’ve evolved as musicians. Recorded at London Bridge Studio in Seattle. We couldn’t be happier with the result of how it turned out. Nothing can touch the specialness of our original recording, but this recording in so many ways has its own power and magic that we hope you will enjoy. And for an added bonus we recorded a new song ‘Novum Vetus. An idea originally conceived around 1998 for ‘How it Feels To Be Something On, but completed and restructured for this new recording. This Friday the 26th, you can buy tickets for the tour, hear/download the song on all DSPs and pre-order the album from our site. Thank you for listening all of these years!”

Fans who don’t want to wait for the cattle call of the general on sale can get quick access to the best tickets via the Sunny Day Real Estate presale.

An artist presale will begin Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 10am local time. Select your tour date and use the following presale code to access your tickets: DIARY2024.

A promoter presale will follow on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 10am local time. Pick a tour date near you and use the presale code SPOTLIGHT to get your tickets.

What To Do If Tickets Are Sold Out?

If tickets sell out, your other option is to buy them via online resellers like VividSeats or StubHub. When all else fails, we prefer these resell options because both offer a 100% Guarantee. You can also purchase resell tickets through Ticketmaster’s resell program. Just search for the concert or event you want to attend , and see if they have any resell tickets available. We recommend you compare the three options and find out which works best for you.

Alternatively, you can hit it old school style and show up at the concert when the box office opens and wish upon a star that they release more tickets, or hopefully, another concert-goer has an extra ticket to sell at face-value or even giveaway for free. Trust, this happens more often than not! We’ve given away many tickets to sold-out shows simply because our +1 couldn’t make it.

Also, more standard tickets are often released via Ticketmaster 1-3 days leading up to the show date. We’ve seen it with Beyonce , Taylor Swift , Arctic Monkeys and many more! It’s a secret gatekeeped by many, but if you’re reading this, now you know! So be sure to set your calendar notifications!

Sunny Day Real Estate returns to Seattle on a reunion tour

The influential emo band Sunny Day Real Estate returns to Seattle Oct. 16 for a stop on its reunion tour.

Share story

Emerging from Seattle’s heady, aggressive grunge scene in the early 1990s, Sunny Day Real Estate did the unthinkable. It made punk pretty.

It didn’t hurt that singer Jeremy Enigk looked like an angel, with wide, innocent eyes and a wounded stare. His voice — high, lilting and perfectly pitched — was unexpectedly powerful, and his lyrics were dusted with a deep and pervasive sorrow. So was the rest of the music, with its churning, melodic guitars and heavy, pointed rhythm section.

But the magic didn’t last long. Internal tensions and Enigk’s desire to pursue a solo career split up the band after just a few years and two full-length albums, 1994’s “Diary” and its follow-up, “LP2.” Still, the group managed to amass a sizable cult following as progenitors of the emo sound.

They were a keen influence on many of today’s chart-topping acts, including Fall Out Boy and Paramore; in fact, “Diary” has gone on to sell more than 230,000 copies, making it among the top 10 most successful releases in Sub Pop Records’ history.

Now, the original Sunny Day Real Estate lineup (Enigk, guitarist Dan Hoerner, bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith) is completing a 21-city tour that kicked off last month. It returns to Seattle today to play a show at the Paramount.

“When Nate called me, I had to sit down — I was gonna pass out,” Hoerner said of the day in February that Mendel, who is also the bassist for the Grammy Award-winning rock act Foo Fighters, contacted him with the idea of a reunion tour. “I was blown away, floored and very excited.”

In the intervening years, Mendel, of course, had remained busy with the Foo Fighters (Goldsmith also played with that band but later left); Enigk released a prog-tinged solo album called “Return of the Frog Queen” in 1996 and another solo effort, “World Waits,” more recently; Hoerner moved to a farm in Washington state and helped write tracks for Dashboard Confessional.

The musicians did reunite periodically: first, as Sunny Day Real Estate, in 1997, although not with Mendel; then in 2001, Mendel, but not Hoerner, joined Goldsmith and Enigk to release an album under the name Fire Theft.

Hoerner said it was only now that the prospect of a full-blown Sunny Day Real Estate reunion seemed natural.

“It just sort of fell in place exactly as you hoped it would,” he said.

The reunion does seem well timed — a majority of tour dates sold out, demonstrating not only the devotion of Sunny Day Real Estate’s original fans but also the continued appeal of a band whose sound has proved to be remarkably enduring.

Still, notoriously publicity-shy Enigk wrote in an e-mail that he’s fundamentally uncomfortable with being seen as influencing today’s crop of pop-punk acts.

“It seems arrogant to me to assume that any band’s sound stemmed from what we created,” Enigk wrote.

“Every single person is influenced by other people,” Hoerner added. “If I was able to play the Edge’s guitar lines the way the Edge can play them, then I would be in a U2 cover band and I would die happy.”

The set list for the tour will be taken exclusively from “Diary” and “LP2,” which Sub Pop has remastered and reissued with bonus tracks and new liner notes.

Although the group admits no intention of using this as an opportunity to make new Sunny Day Real Estate music, neither Hoerner nor Enigk would rule out that possibility.

“We don’t have any plans to write more material,” Hoerner said. “But every time we get together in the room, we start jamming and writing new songs.”

Added Enigk: “During rehearsal we dabbled in a few new ideas for the fun of it, and it was as blissful — if not more than — it ever was. At this point, a new album would be very welcome, but we are taking it one step at a time and focusing on the reunion tours.”

Rock star buys Michigan vineyard and winery

BERRIEN COUNTY, MI -- After performing a concert in Grand Rapids, OneRepublic guitarist Zach Filkins took a drive to visit some nearby wineries.

He ended up buying one of them.

Filkins and his wife, Lindsay, recently bought Karma Vista winery at 6991 Ryno Road in Coloma, renaming it Filkins Vineyards.

“Southwest Michigan inspired us,” Filkins wrote on Instagram while announcing the new business venture, which opened in May.

The couple remembers visiting Karma Vista in 2019 after a OneRepublic concert in Grand Rapids, where they tasted a variety of “wonderful” wines that stuck with them. They both worked in restaurants for years and hosted wine pairing dinner parties with friends, they wrote on the newly established winery’s website . They’ve dreamed of owning a winery since discovering the winery scene on their California honeymoon.

The opportunity presented itself and they took it, buying the business from owners Joe and Sue Herman.

“We are incredibly grateful and humbled by the opportunity to take the torch from the Hermans and are honored to own and operate the very first winery that attracted us to Southwest Michigan wine country,” they said while announcing the new vineyard.

“Connection with one another is such a big part of who we are as humans, so to be able to provide a location for couples, families and friends to come and connect brings us a lot of joy. We hope you stop by!”

Grammy-nominated OneRepublic is known for hits including “Counting Stars,” “Too Late,” “All the Right Moves” and more. The band formed in Colorado Springs in 2002. Filkins is the lead guitarist and a founding member.

The vineyard and winery, with sweeping views of a grapevine-lined rolling countryside, serves guests on site and allows them to relax in casual country setting only about 45 minutes from Kalamazoo.

Lindsay Filkins’ sister, Melissa Feris, was hired as general manager. Jason Johnson, a winemaker with decades of experience in California’s Napa Valley, was hired to lead the company’s wine production.

Filkins Vineyards has hosted live music outdoors and other events at times this summer. No word on whether Filkins will serenade any lucky guests, himself.

Same song, with a twist

Karma Vista Vineyards was established in 2002. The owners announced the sale in March on Facebook.

“After 22 years of amazing wine, customers, friendships and of course Karma, Sue and I are slipping out quietly through the vineyard and into retirement,” the owner posted.

“To everything there is a season, and it is time for us to pass on this good vibration to a new generation. Zach, Lindsay and family are the perfect people to continue the discovery of all that this truly gifted site has to offer the wine world. Like us, they share a passion and eagerness to change the world one vintage at a time.

The new owners commended Joe and Sue Herman for how they communicated while pouring glasses of wine produced on the land.

“I recall Suzie sharing her favorite wines with a big smile on her face as she cleaned the tasting glasses and her love for the tasting room was evident by the meticulous condition of the property,” the Filkins’ wrote on the vineyard website.

Hundreds of people liked and commented on the former owners’ Facebook post announcing the sale.

“The song remains the same, but maybe with a new twist,” the company said to its fans in March.

The former owners are off enjoying the good life, in retirement. They thanked their staff and customers for the years of memories at the vineyard. They joked they were giving an Irish goodbye, leaving it on a final note:

“Hopefully we will meet again. Look for us on the other side of the counter this time,” the former owner said. “May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind always be at your back. ... And may your glass never be empty!”

OneRepublic, on the other hand, is still hard at work. Their world tour continues this month with three nights in Japan, before moving on to locations all over the globe through November.

Demidov city estate Gorokhovskiy per., 4

Under Peter I, the Demidov dynasty became one of the richest in Russia: they founded several mining and weapons plants in the Urals and in Tula. At the end of the XVIII century Ivan Demidov built in the Basmanny quarter of Moscow city estate in the style of classicism.

The author of the project was the architect Matvey Kazakov. On the site of one-storey chambers, he built a monumental three-storey building with a solemn colonnade: Corinthian portico decorated with sculptural decoration. The interiors of the house looked impressive - especially the "Golden rooms" (Zolotye komnaty). In the main halls wooden carving of furniture, cornices were covered with gold-on the architect's drawings.

Subsequently, the estate has repeatedly changed its owners and rebuilt. In Soviet times it housed the Institute of geodesy, aerial photography and cartography engineers. Since 1993, the estate is the State University of geodesy and cartography.

In Moscow, commissioned by Vtorov architects Vladimir Adamovich and Vladimir Mayat built a large mansion in the neoclassical style. They designed a symmetrical building with a half-tone supporting the balcony. The interior of the house was designed by the artist Ignatius Nivinsky. After the revolution, the mansion was nationalized — it began to accommodate apartments and offices. One of the most famous mansions of the capital is the house of Zinaida Morozova, wife of Savva Morozov.

The estate was completed in 1898, the project was led by architect Fyodor Shekhtel. He built the estate in the neo-Gothic style with a tower with massive Windows. Facades he decorated quite succinctly-the main detail was a number of arched Windows. For interior decoration Shekhtel invited young Mikhail Vrubel. The artist painted three panels for the living room, created the stained glass window " Knight " and the sculpture"Robert and the nuns". With the advent of Soviet power in the mansion housed the food Committee, an orphanage. Today it is the home of receptions of the Ministry of foreign Affairs.

A. Smirnov in Moscow." When Emperor Alexander III tried Smirnov's products, he made it the only supplier of the court Of his Imperial Majesty.

His son and heir Peter Smirnov in 1900 acquired the estate on Tverskoy Boulevard. He commissioned the architect Fyodor Shekhtel to reconstruct the house. Externally, the architect gave the estate a chic modern style-designed glazed Bay Windows, added a balcony, changed the shape of the Windows. Inside, he created a Suite of rooms, designed in a variety of styles: classicism, Rococo, Egyptian, Greek and others. In the estate had electricity, ventilation and steam heating. In Soviet times, the mansion was the Revolutionary Tribunal, the people's court and the Prosecutor's office, today there is a Banquet hall.

City estate of Andrei Knop Kolpachny lane, 5

One of the richest people in Russia in the XIX century was Johann Ludwig Knop — entrepreneur, cotton merchant. He helped to open textile factories throughout the country: more than 200 enterprises were built under the direction of Knop. After the death of the businessman, his two sons inherited not only factories, but also the city estate. They shared it with each other. In one of the areas in 1900 by the architect Karl Treiman built for Andrew Knop town house in the Gothic revival style. Similar to the English castle, the building was decorated with a toothed turret, plucked endings and sculptural Baron's coats of arms of the Knop family. Inside the estate was also decorated in the style of English Gothic-the walls were decorated with collectible guns and tapestries.

After the revolution, the estate was nationalized, at different times there was a representative of the Ukrainian SSR, the reception of the Chairman of the State Commission for electrification of Russia Gleb Krzhizhanovsky and the Moscow Committee of the Komsomol organization. Today, the building houses commercial offices.

Kozma Soldatenkov's Estate Myasnitskaya street, 37

Kozma Soldatenkov went down in history as the owner of his own art gallery, bookseller and one of the largest benefactors: he donated more than 5 million rubles (for comparison — 50 rubles at the time you could buy a cow or a horse). Income brought him to a textile factory, inherited from his father.

In the 1850s, he acquired the estate built by Osip Bove and Afanasiy Grigoriev. Its reconstruction he commissioned the architect Alexander Rezanov. He expanded the wings and built the front lobby. The architect designed the interiors in different styles-Byzantine, Pompeian, Renaissance. In addition, the estate was arranged old believer chapel. There was also a picturesque collection and a library. When Soldatenkov mansion was one of the centers of cultural life in Moscow — it was visited by Vasily Klyuchevsky, Anton Chekhov, Sergei Solovyov and others. After the revolution, the estate housed a sanatorium, a kindergarten; during the war-the Headquarters of the Supreme command and the state defense Committee. Today, in one of the wings of the estate has a restaurant.

It was he who built the apartment house on Myasnitskaya street-today in this building there is a bookstore "Biblio-Globus". Stakheev himself lived in a neo-Greek estate on Novaya Basmannaya street. The manor house for the merchant was built in 1899 by architect Mikhail Bugrovsky. In front of the monumental asymmetrical building was a garden and a fountain "Goddess of the night" (it works today). The interiors combined different styles: there were rooms in the Baroque, Rococo, Gothic, etc. After the revolution, the mansion housed a division of the Commissariat of Railways, and then the Central house of railway children.

Mansion Of Stepan Ryabushinsky 6 Malaya Nikitskaya street

In the middle of the XIX century the old believers of Kaluga founded a small textile factory. Over time, the number of factories increased, and Ryabushinskys were among the richest people in Russia. One of the most famous Moscow addresses of this name is the mansion of Stepan Ryabushinsky on Malaya Nikitskaya street, which became one of the main monuments of modernism in Moscow.

The mansion was built in 1903 by architect Fyodor Shekhtel. He designed a three-storey house. However, due to the Windows of different sizes, located on different levels, it looked on the one hand as a two — storey, and on the other-as a multi-storey. The facade of the building is decorated with a mosaic of irises. The interior of the house is designed in a marine style-the first floor is a wave-like staircase: its prototype was the staircase in the house of French actress Ivette Gilber.

In the hall hangs a chandelier in the form of jellyfish, and the door handles are cast in the form of seahorses. The main secret of the building was a secret old believers ' chapel, located in the attic. After the revolution, the mansion was nationalized. In Soviet times it belonged to the people's Commissariat of foreign Affairs, Psychoanalytic Institute and even kindergarten. Now the building is a Museum-apartment of Maxim Gorky: the writer lived here in 1931-1936.

Manor Prokhorov-Khludovs Podsosensky lane, 30

The Prokhorov family owned the oldest textile enterprise in Moscow — the trekhgornaya manufactory. It made them a huge profit. In 1860 Konstantin Prokhorov wife Praskovia Lugovoi (the heir of a merchant dynasty of Hladovych) moved to the house on Vorontsovo field. The building was built in the late XVIII century, and then restored after a fire in 1812. Externally solved in the classical style, inside it was decorated more diverse — in Moorish, Greek, and other styles. In 1997, the building was completely renovated, today it houses the offices of ROSENERGOBANK. Once a month in the mansion conducted tours.

Manor Krasilshchikov Mokhovaya street, 6

For 100 years the Krasilshchikov family has made its way from serfs to one of the richest Industrialists in Russia. They earned their capital in the textile industry. In 1906, Nikolai Krasilshchikov bought a large house on Mokhovaya street, which at different times was owned by princes Nikita Zotov, Fyodor Golitsyn and Peter Shakhovskaya.

The last reconstruction of the house was made in 1868 by the architect Alexander Kaminsky: he combined the main building with side wings and built a classic ionic portico. After the revolution Krasilschikov emigrated to France. The house housed a hostel, and later-the Institute of library science. Today the center of Oriental literature of the Russian state library is located in the estate.

‘It’s fans first at the end of the day:’ Savannah Bananas hit Cleveland with their brand of baseball

savannah bananas show in cleveland

  • Kaylee Remington, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Banana Ball jolted Progressive Field on Saturday night.

With the Cleveland Guardians playing the Twins in Minnesota, the Savannah Bananas – the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball – took over the intersection of Carnegie and Ontario. For one night, a packed ballpark became a place where laughs and smiles, not runs and a win, mattered most.

The Bananas stopped in Cleveland as part of the team’s 2024 Banana Ball World Tour. They played against the Party Animals, a team that travels with the Bananas and competes against them. The teams showcased why Banana Ball is the fastest, most entertaining form of baseball, a game where if you looked away, you missed something.

The evening began with the Very Important Bananas meet-and-greet with players from the two teams on the field. Kids dressed as bananas. Superfans wore jerseys that were divided with the logos of the Bananas and the Party Animals.

Outside Progressive Field, the players revved up the crowd, which went bananas. They marched in the plaza between the stadium and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. They also broke out into their signature “Hey Baby” dance and joined a countdown to the gates opening.

That was just the appetizer.

The team introduced the Dad Bod Cheerleading Squad, the Man Nana’s, as well as Princess Potassium. The Banana Nanas, the 65-and-older dance team, also performed. And two fans played Banana in the Pants, where they caught tossed bananas in their pants.

The team, as it does at the beginning of every game, found one of the youngest fans in the crowd and hoisted the child in the air in a banana suit. Another young fan, alongside the team’s owner Jesse Cole, led the fan warm up, and the crowd mimicked her moves.

In the middle and end of each inning, the team hosted entertainment, such as the infamous World’s Slowest Race, where toddlers attempted to scoot along the first-base line. Slow, but adorable as expected.

Some of the surprises of the night included appearances from a pair of former Indians: second baseman Jason Kipnis, who went up to bat, and Cy Young winner Corey Kluber, who pitched to a batter.

The games are an upbeat experience, and fans are in the mix, whether singing, dancing or taking part in the entertainment between innings.

Andy Archer, 26, of Peachtree Corners, Georgia, is in his first year as a pitcher for the team. Archer said he enjoys putting a fun and positive twist on a game that everyone grew up playing and loving.

“It’s about making it more fun for the fans,” he said while signing autographs. “Just changing the rules like two-hour time limit, and if the fan catches the ball, it’s an out. It feels like they’re a part of the game. It’s fans first at the end of the day. Everything we do has that fans-first mentality.”

Archer calls the games unbelievable, fun and explosive.

Based on the crowd, it was all those things. Players did back flips, caught fly balls with ease and danced. They blended high-level baseball skills with the flair for entertainment.

Missy Bipperman, 39, of Wooster went to her first game Saturday. She and her family were the recognized Bananas Foster family in the middle of the fourth inning.

The Bananas Foster is a nonprofit that celebrates the foster care community and encourages others to get involved. Bipperman works with Stark County and has been fostering for eight years.

She and her family were embraces by both the Savannah Bananas and Party Animals teams on the field.

“Hopefully this inspires some other families to become foster parents,” she said before the game. “I’m just hoping to inspire other people that maybe have it in their heart to foster to decide to take the jump and get involved and get certified.

Cole, the team’s owner, invented “Banana Ball” in 2018, and the first official game was played on June 26, 2020, at the team’s home turf, Grayson Stadium in Georgia.

Derek Wendt, 47, of North Olmsted said he had a great time during the Bananas game he went to last year in Akron. Though it was pouring rain, that didn’t stop him and his family from singing, dancing and interacting with the team. They had so much fun, they went to see the team Saturday night in Cleveland.

“It’s just a different style of baseball with the trick plays, the fans catching a ball and it’s an out,” he said.

Dan Oberst, 27, of Tampa, is a six-year member of the Bananas. He plays first and serves as a designated hitter.

Oberst played baseball at the University of West Georgia and in the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer baseball league.

He said he was lucky to join the Bananas. His goal is to put on the best show they can for the fans.

Banana Ball is here to stay, he said, and it’s impacting people positively. He calls it “two hours of joy.”

“People are traveling from all over country to come see us, and for a lot of them, it’s their first time seeing us because of the demand for tickets,” Oberst said.

“So, we spend a lot of time making sure the entertainment and the interactions we have with people are different and it’s something for them to remember. Everyone’s smiling, happy. It’s just like kind of contagious magic.”

Ukraine Launches Rare Cross-Border Ground Assault Into Russia

Troops and armored fighting vehicles crossed into Russia’s western Kursk region on Tuesday, according to Moscow and independent analysts. Ukrainian officials have not commented.

Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine

Ukraine has launched a surprise ground assault into Russia with troops and armored vehicles, Russian officials and independent military analysts said on Wednesday, in what could be one of the largest Ukrainian incursions onto Russian soil in more than two years of war.

The assault, which began on Tuesday in the Kursk region of western Russia, has resulted in heavy fighting, according to images from the battlefield verified by independent military analysts and Russian statements.

Videos verified by The New York Times showed armored vehicles being struck several miles inside Russia , and Moscow said it had rushed troops and fighter jets to respond. Gen. Valery V. Gerasimov, the commander of Russian forces fighting in Ukraine, said the advance of Ukrainian troops had been halted on Wednesday evening, while pro-Kremlin military bloggers said Ukrainian forces had captured several settlements near the border.

“Alarming news is coming from the Kursk region for the second day,” Igor Artamonov, the governor of the Russian region of Lipetsk, which borders the Kursk region, said on Wednesday. “The Kyiv regime is attacking our borders.”

By Wednesday evening, Ukrainian troops appeared to have advanced several miles into Russian territory, one analyst said, and Russian officials said the fighting was continuing.

The various reports could not be independently verified, and the Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the assault. Two spokesmen for the Ukrainian Army did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This is not the first time that Ukraine has staged ground attacks across the border into Russia. But while previous assaults were carried out by armed groups of Russian exiles backed by Kyiv’s army, the attack on Tuesday appeared to have directly involved Ukrainian troops, according to Pasi Paroinen of the Black Bird Group , which analyzes footage from the battlefield.

Mr. Paroinen said that a few hundred Ukrainian troops, supported by armored vehicles, had most likely crossed the border on the first day of the attack, and that more soldiers had arrived on the second day. General Gerasimov said that up to 1,000 Ukrainian troops took part in the cross-border attack, a figure that could not be confirmed.

Military analysts said the attack could be an attempt to divert Russian units from the front lines, thus relieving the pressure on Ukrainian troops struggling to contain Russian advances . But they added that the Russian Army had ample reserves of troops to commit to the fight and that the attack risked further stretching Ukraine’s already outnumbered forces.

“Operationally and strategically, this attack makes absolutely zero sense,” Mr. Paroinen said. “This seems like a gross waste of men and resources badly needed elsewhere.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the attack started around 8 a.m. on Tuesday with Ukraine’s 22nd Mechanized Brigade attacking border units in the Kursk region, backed by some 30 tanks and armored fighting vehicles. Mr. Paroinen reported “multiple sightings” of Stryker armored fighting vehicles, which the United States sent to Ukraine last year .

Rybar, a prominent Russian military blogger, said on Wednesday that Ukrainian troops had crossed the border at different points, along at least two lines of attack. He said Ukraine had captured three settlements on the first line, which runs north from the Russian village of Nikolayevo-Darino. On the second line of attack, toward the town of Sudzha, Russian troops were “almost completely surrounded” in the village of Oleshnya, Rybar said.

Mr. Paroinen said that Ukrainian troops appeared to have advanced up to five miles north of Nikolayevo-Darino and that they were pushing toward Sudzha.

Ukrainian shelling in the area of the assault killed five civilians and wounded 24 others , according to the Russian state news agency TASS. Alexei Smirnov , the acting governor of the Kursk region, said thousands of residents had evacuated the area of the fighting, most of them by their own means.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said on Wednesday that he would meet with his country’s security services to coordinate a military response to the attacks and that instructions had been given to assist residents of the Kursk region.

Although Ukrainian officials have not officially commented on the attack, Andriy Kovalenko, a senior official focused on Russian disinformation operations, appeared to acknowledge it, writing on Telegram : “Russian soldiers are lying about the controllability of the situation in the Kursk region. Russia does not control the border.”

On Wednesday, Volodymyr Artyukh , the Ukrainian governor of the Sumy region, which sits across from Russia’s Kursk region, ordered the evacuation of some 6,000 residents amid the fighting.

Ukrainian shelling and bombings have in the past targeted Russia’s border regions of Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk, but cross-border attacks have been rare. The first such attacks reported took place in May of last year , carried out by anti-Kremlin Russian fighters aligned with Ukraine. A similar ground attack took place this March .

On both occasions, the attacks were seen as an attempt to unnerve the Russian public and undermine Mr. Putin’s efforts to insulate them from the war.

But Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, wrote on social media that those attacks “had little effect on the fighting” in Ukraine and “did not have serious domestic political ramifications for Putin.”

He and other military experts said that if the aim of this week’s attack was to draw Russian troops away from other parts of the front, it had little chance of succeeding.

“Russia already has greater forces/conventional capabilities in the area, better command and control, and it has conscript units that can be deployed, which are not used in Ukraine,” Mr. Lee said. “It is unlikely this operation will force Russia to pull significant forces from Ukraine.”

Sanjana Varghese contributed reporting from London, and Ivan Nechepurenko from Tbilisi, Georgia.
