  • Pack a medical kit with painkillers, antibiotics, cough lozenges, Antiseptic cream, Iodine, tube-squeeze cream and medicines for cold and fever. Carry your routine medicines, as you might find only limited and general medicine at such remote locations.
  • Carry dark chocolates, dry fruits, Glucose (Glucon D), toffees. They will provide your instant energy during the trekking and during long jams.
  • It can rain anytime here, so it is mandatory to carry an umbrella and raincoat along with your rain shoes.
  • To protect yourself from the cold winds here, carry a windcheater, woolen socks, monkey caps and a muffler. These will enable you to withstand the chill that comes with wind on the upper Himalayan region.
  • When asking for directions, speak to shopkeepers, not pedestrians. Check with at least two persons or more.
  • Do not take pictures if cameras are not allowed in any particular area. Do not play with the sentiments of any particular religion.
  • At least a month before the Yatra, it is advisable to start preparatory exercises for the trip 4 months in advance.
  • Though self-managed tours happen to be economical, it is advisable for your Chardham yatra to go for a guided tour arranged by an expert local travel agent.
  • Carry extra batteries and films for your camera, as electricity is not regular in such remote places.
  • Avoid traveling in the rainy season as there are a lot of landslides during that time.
  • Book your trip well  in advance if you are travelling close to the temple opening dates, there is a heavy rush of pilgrims.
  • Alcohol or non-vegetarian food is not permitted during Char Dham Yatra Tour.

If self-driving in Uttarakhand during Chardham

  • Always keep your vehicle on left side of the Road.
  • Use Horn at curves on hills, never overtake the overtaking vehicle.
  • One should not drive more than 8 hours a day in hilly region.
  • Avoid driving after sunset, as it is not allowed in hilly area of Uttarakhand.
  • Use shoes instead of slippers while driving.
  • Check your Brakes and Hand Brakes before starting journey.
  • Check the Headlights, Break light and Parking lights of your vehicle.
  • Always give way to uphill vehicles.
  • Keep your vehicle's valid documents with you to avoid inconvenience.
  • Before journey, make sure that fuel tank of your vehicle is full; in case of landslides you might have to take alternate long routes.
  • Ensure to refuel, where ever easily you get chance, during season there might be long queues in Petrol Pumps at main stations.
  • Carry first aid box with you.
  • Do not drink and drive.
  • In case of traffic jam, park your vehicle at the end of the queue. If you initiate a parallel queue, the traffic from other side might force you to drive in reverse gear, till you reach again at end of the original queue. And you may find it very difficult to drive long in reverse gear on a hilly road.

Kedarnath from Haridwar: travel tips & accommodation

Discover the divine journey to Kedarnath from Haridwar where the sacred Kedarnath temple stands as a testament to Lord Shiva’s presence. This quick guide offers essential information on how to reach this revered pilgrimage site in Uttarakhand and where to find a comfortable stay along the way.

Haridwar to Kedarnath Distance:

The road distance from Kedarnath to Haridwar is approximately 252 km, taking around 7 hours and 19 minutes to cover. Alternatively, the aerial distance is about 123 km.

The journey begins from Haridwar, which is well-connected to other major North Indian cities like Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rishikesh. You can travel by road, train, or even by air, reaching Dehradun before continuing to Kedarnath.

Kedarnath trek:.

One popular route from Dehradun involves stops at Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Sonprayag, and finally, Gaurikund . From Gaurikund, a trek of around 16 km leads to the Kedarnath temple. Another option is through Rishikesh, where buses and private vehicles are more accessible. T he trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 16 km and can be undertaken by foot, horse, or palanquin.

Kedarnath by Helicopter:

For a unique experience, consider taking a helicopter from places like Dehradun, Guptkashi, Sirsi, or Phata to reach Kedarnath. While this option is more expensive, it offers breathtaking aerial views of the landscape.

Useful Tips:

  • Avoid taking a pony ride from Sonprayag; start from Gaurikund instead.
  • If allergic to horses or mules, consider a helicopter ride.
  • Start your journey early to ensure a timely temple visit.
  • Carry a jacket and raincoat due to unpredictable weather.

A Helicopter Journey:

Embarking on a helicopter journey to Kedarnath is an enchanting and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Various locations across Uttarakhand, such as Dehradun, Guptkashi, Sirsi, and Phata, offer helicopter services to Kedarnath. While the cost, typically around 7000-8000 INR, may not be negligible, the breathtaking aerial views make it truly exhilarating.

Reaching gaurikund:.

The motorbike road terminates at Gaurikund, marking the gateway to your spiritual journey. From here, your options are to traverse on foot or opt for the convenience of palanquins or horses. The trail leading to Kedarnath is a winding, steep, and roughly 13-kilometer path is challenging even the most determined pilgrims.

However, if climbing proves difficult, you can avail yourself of horses, dandies, or ponies, although pricing tends to vary. Booking these options can be done through the government website.

An Alternative Route Kedarnath from Haridwar:

For those starting from Rishikesh, a popular 227-kilometer route is frequently taken. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun serves as the entry point. A short 30-50-minute journey transports you to Rishikesh, from where you can catch a taxi or bus to reach Joshimath.

GMVN Facility and Booking Challenges:

A chance to stay at the GMVN facility located near the temple is a fortunate opportunity. However, securing a booking can be a challenge, as it tends to be fully booked due to its popularity.

Traveler’s insights and precautions:.

  • Pony Ride Pointers: Avoid opting for a pony ride from Sonprayag, as it adds unnecessary hours to your travel time. It’s advisable to travel further to Gaurikund for a more efficient choice.
  • Allergies and Helicopter Solution: If you have allergies to horses or mules, the helicopter becomes a favorable option to avoid potential discomfort.
  • Early Start and Timing: Commence your journey from Gaurikund at the earliest feasible time to ensure reaching the temple by afternoon, allowing for a descent before sunset. A late start might lead to inconvenience, particularly when trying to reach Sonprayag from Gaurikund, as transport modes become congested.
  • Weather Preparedness: Be equipped with a jacket and raincoat, as the unpredictable weather in the region can transition from rain to sun to hailstorm in a short span.

Accommodation Options:

While accommodations within Kedarnath itself are limited, nearby towns like Guptakashi, Gaurikund, Sitapur, Rampur, and Ukimath provide a range of lodging choices. During the Char Dham Yatra season, temporary camps open, providing overnight shelter for pilgrims before they resume their ascent.

The government has taken measures to expand these camps, accommodating up to 4000 pilgrims. For a scenic stay, picturesque spots along the banks of the River Mandakini or in Guptakashi offer budget-friendly hotels, ideal for one-night stops before your onward journey.

Embark on this spiritual journey to Kedarnath from Haridwar, experiencing both the adventure and serenity that this sacred destination offers. Plan your route wisely, choose your mode of transport from Haridwar to Kedarnath, and find a comfortable place to rest, all while basking in the divine aura of Lord Shiva’s abode.

Char Dham Package Itinerary

This 3 day Kedarnath tour package will offer road tour to Guptkashi from Haridwar and Kedarnath Darshan along with deluxe accommodations during the tour.

Day 01 Haridwar to Guptkashi (220kms/8-9hr)

Morning after breakfast, drive to Guptkashi via Rudraprayag & Devprayag . Enroute you can see the beautiful river Mandakini at Tilwara. The Mandakini river comes from Kedarnath, drive alongside the river to reach Guptakashi, visit Ardh Narishwar Temple in Guptakashi. Check into the hotel arrival in Guptakashi. Overnight stay at Guptakashi.

Guptakashi:- The name Gupt Kashi means “Hidden Benares. Mythology describes how when the Pandava brothers were searching for a glimpse of Shiva, Shivji first concealed himself at Guptkashi, but later fled from them further up the valley to Kedarnath, where the Pandavas finally got their wish fulfilled. There are more tangible connections as well-the Kedarnath pandas (priests) live in Guptkashi during the winter months, and after the Kedarnath temple closes for the winter, the image of Kedarnath passes through Gupt Kashi on its way to Ukhimath (across the valley), where it stays for the winter.

Guptkashi Weather – pleasant in summer, the temperature ranges from 25-30 degree Celsius. Cold in winters.

Day 02 Guptkashi to Kedarnath to Guptkashi (30kms by road & 19kms Trek one way)

Morning after breakfast drive to Gaurikund, start your trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath (by Pony / Doli / Helicopter at your own cost). Visit Kedarnath Temple . After temple Darshan trek down to Gaurikund. Later, drive to Guptkashi. Overnight stay at Guptakashi.

Treking Route: If you are going by trek for Kedarnath then our car will drop you at Sonprayag. You have to hire a local jeep for Gaurikund then your trek will start for Kedarnath Ji 14 km one way.  Same as when you return.

Kedarnath: The Kedarnath shrine, one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Kedarnath range. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva. According to legend, the Pandavas after having won over the Kaurava in the Kurukshetra war felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places and are worshipped there as his manifestations. The arms appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at Madhmaheshwar, and his locks (hair) with the head at Kalpeshwar. Kedarnath and the four above-mentioned shrines are treated as Panch Kedar.

Kedarnath Weather – Due to its high altitude the weather in Kedarnath remains cold for the most part of the year. Summer here is cool and pleasant while winter is severe. During the summer season the temperature varies around 20°Celsius. Light woolen wear is recommended. The Winter season in Kedarnath is severe with the mercury falling to as low as 0°Celsius. During this time the place experiences snowfall as well. Due to the extreme climatic conditions, this time is usually avoided by tourists.

Day 03 Guptkashi to Haridwar (165kms/5-6hr)

Morning after breakfast, drive for Haridwar via Rishikesh. Rishikesh ‘place of sages’ is a celebrated spiritual town on the bank of Ganga and is surrounded by the Shivalik range of the Himalayas on three sides. It is said that when Raibhya Rishi did hard penances, God appeared by the name of ” Hrishikesh ” and this area hence firth came to be known as Rishikesh. Later visit Rishikesh Temples & Sight Seeing – Laxman Jhulla, Ram Jhulla. Drop at Haridwar. Tour concludes.

History of Shri Kedarnath Temple

Many tales and stories that are related to the Garhwal region, Lord Shiva and Panch Kedar add up to the history of Kedarnath Temple. The history of Kedarnath Temple dates back to the 8th century as it is believed that a great saint and philosopher Adi Shankaracharya made a whole record of this place. The great Guru is believed to have built this temple yet many renovations and constructions have been done later due to several natural disasters and calamities. When Adi Shankaracharya was travelling from Kerala to Kedarnath, he found many temples, pilgrimage points, and mathematical answers and popularised the Hindu religion by organising the Chota Char Dham Yatra in Devbhoomi, Uttarakhand. Also, according to Hindu mythology, it is thought that the Pandavas of the legendary story Mahabharata built it when they were travelling towards heaven to repent for their sins. Lord Shiva was not happy and refused to meet them, though the Pandavas followed him to the Himalayas where he took refuge in the form of a bull. This made the Pandavas build a temple at the site where they mediated and prayed for attaining their salvation.

Religious Significance of Shri Kedarnath Dham Yatra

A huge religious significance is related to Kedarnath Dham Yatra as it is a major site for Hindu pilgrimage. According to stories and legends, the Panch Kedar temples were built by the Pandavas during their way to attain salvation and mediated day and night to please Lord Shiva, Kedarnath is one of the Panch Kedars. Kedarnath Mandir is located in the Garhwal Himalayas and because of its huge spiritual significance, it is visited by lakhs of devotees every year. Another legendary tale that is related to the temple is that Guru Adi Shankaracharya built this temple during the 8th century and spread the sense of Hinduism across the nation. Kedarnath Temple of Uttarakhand is also considered one of the famous 12 Jyotirlingas, as people believe that by visiting all the Shiva Temples spread throughout the country will help people wash away their sins, achieve positivity and will help them attain Moksha. The yatra of Kedarnath Dham is considered one of the most difficult journeys yet visited by lakhs of people every year, especially in the months from April to early November.

Architecture Design of Kedarnath Temple

The architectural design of Kedarnath Temple represents the North Indian style of architecture. The temple structure is made from grey stones and slabs which are connected to one another by iron clamps and mortar (mixture of lime and cement). The idol of Kedarnath is irregular in shape and is placed on a pedestal of 3.6 metres in height and circumference. One can see the mesmerising view of the Kedarnath Peak and other magnificent peaks behind the Kedarnath Dome. One of Kedarnath’s most notable features is the triangle stone lingam which looks like a finely carved head of a man. The most interesting part here is that the same head-like structure is found in a nearby temple where Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva got married.

Visitors can also observe a tiny pillared hall in front of the temple. The hall is covered with images of Pancha Pandavas and Goddess Parvati. As one enters the temple, the first is covered with statues of Lord Krishna, Nandi (bull vahana of Shiva), five Pandava princes and Virabhadra (Shiva’s loyal guards). As one keeps exploring the other sections of the temple and moving forward towards the main hall, they can get to see a beautiful collection of other statues, including Draupadi and several other deities. Lakhs of visitors visit this temple to take blessings. For both visitors and spiritual seekers, Kedarnath is an incredibly unique and breathtaking location because of the combination of these magnificent elements.
