Hiatus Kaiyote are a band hailing from Melbourne, Australia who formed in 2011. Since debuting, the band have released two singles along with an E.P, and have made a reputation for themselves as one of the most acclaimed neo-soul acts of today.

In an age where a lot of artists go to extreme, and some might say ill-advised, lengths to stay ahead of the curve and out of the crowd, Hiatus Kaiyote go further than most by describing their sound as “Multi-Dimensional, Polyrhythmic Gangster Sh*t”. It would take a very special band to live up to that, but fortunately, in the capable hands of lead singer and songwriter Nai Palm, Hiatus Kaiyote live up to that promise and more besides. She has been the driving force of the band since the very beginning, at first performing solo concerts before drafting in bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin and multi-instrumentalist Perrin Moss to form a proper band around her songs.

The year after they formed, the band self-released their debut album “Tawk Tomahawk”, an album that was so acclaimed that it netted them a deal with the Sony Masterworks imprint label Flying Buddha, who re-released the album in 2013. This re-released version of the album included a collaboration with A Tribe Called Quest legend Q-Tip, who's just one of the many musical icons who've given the band their seal of approval. Since then, the band have released another, similarly acclaimed studio album entitled “Choose Your Weapon”, and continued to be one of the most exciting and esoteric groups of their generation. For that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

You tell me Hiatus Kaiyote and I tell, you they are from the heavens themselves!

A band that specialises in Neo-Soul, a genre you rarely ever hear of, this may even be your first time coming across this genre, but I assure you if you put your faith in Hiatus Kaiyote, then you , my friend have nothing at all to fear!

Finding them by accident I will admit, as I am a fan of Q - Tip and a friend told of a collaboration he had done with an Australian band, I will admit that I was a bit confused due to the fact that I did not even realise there were many Australian artists out there and that Q - Tip would perform with a boyband.

I judged too soon because, they aren't even a boyband and the lead singer is extremely beautiful with a voice to match Nai Palm, yes it sounds like Napalm and with the fire they come with that name is completely allowed!

Just missing out on a Grammy, you can see that they are a very talented band and that is me speaking without bias, as a neutral source of information. Men lie, women lie, facts however speak for themselves and their talent is a testimony for their skill.

The band, when performing live are a rare breed of artists, taking the time to talk to the fan base and tell them little back stories relating to the creation of songs, or even just having a bit of banter, they work a crowd well with ease and finesse. When performing their song 'Nakamarra' the crowd really got into the performance and began cheering on the band after each small moment where lyrics were not present. The sound is very calming and so beautiful that you won't even know it's over until the instruments stop and you're left abandoned without the warmth of the bass and soulful singing.

I say, take a chance, you will not be disappointed.

from the moment Family member Remi stepped onto the stage to warm the crowd you could feel an air of excitement fill the room.

As the crowd got thicker up came the pace of Remi and really started to get the crowd together to loosen up before the highly anticipated Hiatus Kaiyote were to shower us with musical genius.

There's so many bands that have similar influences to this musically charismatic quadruple. But I've yet to discover a band that pull off such varying and distinct emotions throughout their catalogue of songs. From the smooth fluttering flow of mobius streak and nakamarra to the crunching grit that makes your head bang in swamp thing, all four of these artists are truly talented... an absolute inspiration for music.

I travelled to Manchester to see these guys as london was sold out . I can't recommend them more than travelling on a 5 hour coach to the other end of the country just tomwitness these guys work so magically together.... oh and Nai Palm.... If you don't fall

I love with her soft and sweet voice from the moment she's speaks just wait...wait till she sings

I don't need to write a long review.

If you've heard their records, that's what they sound like live. Plus unreleased stuff, jams and vamps on tunes, and more/different solos. Great vibes all around, awesome stage presence, they draw a really nice crowd. Was amazing seeing them live, the musicianship in this group is really phenomenal. All their music sounds good, but it FEELS great.

So that's what you get out of seeing them live: you FEEL it, not just hear it. I danced a lot, sang along, and had a great time. I recommend doing the same if you get the chance.

This was my second time seeing Hiatus Kaiyote live. The first time I went was one month ago and I walked away from it thinking it was the best concert experience of my life. After last night's concert, I can say I was wrong because last night's concert somehow managed to be even BETTER than the first concert. 12 hours later, I am still in a total daze and caught up in the pure beauty, energy, and extremely good vibes that filled the room. i LOVE LOVE LOVE this band! This concert was beyond epic...

Awesome band. Perfect for music junkies/jazz lab nerds. Despite the lead singer having the flu, she absolutely rocked the venue, and the crowd became so into it that the band became surprisingly impressed by our presence as we were impressed by their performance. The show was so good that they promised to come back to Chicago shortly. Super nice people too - spoke to them behind merch table and they were great! Very cool show.

Loved them - saw them in London at the O2 Kentish Town in April.

Mix of songs from the albums plus some new tracks had the whole arena buzzing & singing along. Everything from the playlist to the backing singers to the audience interaction was on point.

You know it's a good concert when you don't want to leave and want to start the night again.

It was just amazing! They are very profesiobal, all talented, and after all they are artists. I mean I felt incredible sensations during the show.

The public was warmed up, everybody was singing dancing and jumping...

Very good atmosphere.

I'll do it again if I can!

This group is really popular, but I don't get the hype. The groove switches up too frequently and the band has a lot going on at the same time. I didn't enjoy this concert but the audience seemed really into it so it must be a cult following sort of thing.

musiclover1221’s profile image

Simply put: They were absolutely incredible. Nai Palm has a magical presence on stage and her and the other band members were in this ridiculous groove-sync all night long. The crowd loved them and they loved us. A beautiful experience.

juliette-barasch’s profile image

I was a big wild child grooving deep...had a great time listening to the latest songs and some from the last album. The show was better than the album which is saying a lot since their rhythms are unusual. It was still funky...very.

How collaboration, curiosity and mortality shaped hiatus kaiyote's 'mood valiant'.

Nicholas Russell

Hiatus Kaiyote's new album, Mood Valiant , is out June 25.

In the last decade, Hiatus Kaiyote has been synonymous with a kind of understated cool that sometimes gets mistaken for pretentiousness. The band — made up of lead singer and guitarist Nai Palm, bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin and drummer Perrin Moss — is known for its intricate, genre-hopping style. Its propensity for trying on and melding different styles — R&B, hip-hop, funk, soul — has led to repeated misclassifications by music journalists and even casual fans as to the kind of music it makes. This had led to a typical back-and-forth in interviews with Kaiyote: "Are you a jazz/neo-funk/r&b group?" answered with a less concrete, but more honest: "Not any one of those things."

Still, some people seem most confident in classifying the group based on the enormously famous artists who have sampled it: Kendrick Lamar , Beyoncé , Drake , plus a past single with Q-Tip . This proximity to Black music, especially from a group of all-white Australians, tends to be treated as overdetermined novelty in the media, though Kaiyote is not the first, nor will it likely be the last, group of white musicians to make music clearly influenced by Black culture. It's more realistic, and less sensational, to realize that the band's commitment to a unique sound and genuine musical curiosity are what drive its members and draw new listeners, famous or not.

Australia's Hiatus Kaiyote Carves Out A Crazy Path

Music Interviews

Australia's hiatus kaiyote carves out a crazy path.

To Kaiyote, I put forth the optimistic thought that its excellent new record, Mood Valiant — its first in six years, out June 25 — is an undeniable showcase of the band's vast musical range and talent for arrangement. After the spareness of its debut, 2012's Tawk Tomahawk, and the chaotic alien wizardry of 2015's Choose Your Weapon comes the band's most cohesive album yet. Valiant represents a marriage of all the disparate sounds, whether electronic, acoustic, or found, that the band has always been using. Here, those Hiatus Kaiyote staples — intricate arrangements, flawless rhythmic feel, wondrous melodies, Palm's evocative lyrics — are all seamlessly interwoven and deepened.

Over Zoom, we talked about the band's path to Mood Valiant , including how Palm's experience with breast cancer informed her perspective on the record. "I'm super stoked that we have new music out," she says, "because I became obsessed with the concept that I was going to die before we finished it." We also talked about these misclassifications of the band's music — and its undeserved reputation as first-take musicians — and how the band's collaboration with Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai shaped Mood Valiant .

This interview has been edited for length and clarity .

Nicholas Russell: I want to talk about how you all play on this album. Much of it reminded me of Tawk Tomahawk, in terms of closeness and warmth. There are also moments on the record when Nai's vocals remind me of Erykah Badu — the vulnerability of the singing, but also how things are mic'ed. Was there specific equipment, or a specific style of playing, that you were excited to put on this record that you hadn't done before?

Paul Bender: On the other two records, there was definitely a big mix of things that were very live and then things were very produced in an electronic way. I think on this record, there's a bit more of a symbiosis between them.

Perrin Moss: For us, it was like: How do we leave more up to the imagination [so that] people go on their own journey when they're listening to the sonics and the lyrics? I feel like we got that on this record.

Nai Palm: That evolution happened because we took a year off and everyone made their own records. I did a solo record, [Perrin] made a record. So we had the time to go back to ourselves and find the things that we love. With the early records, it was just all of us chucking it all in the mix. Whereas that time off influenced how we perceive things and how we can put it together a bit more intricately and intentionally.

Simon, I'm curious about "Rose Water." I love the chords on that song. How did that come together?

Simon Mavin: I just had an idea of the opening riff, and then I brought it to the band and it just literally turned into a song in a session or two; it was really quick. For me, it's a classic way that Hiatus grabs ideas and runs with them in a really unique way; you can bring an idea in, and it will just come out in a way that you didn't perceive it to because everyone has got such a ridiculous view of music.

Bender: That tune, like a lot of Hiatus things, definitely started off as a more complicated idea, which eventually got shaved down to something quite concise and simple. I remember initially we were going to do quite a lot more complex numbers, rhythmic numbers, then we eventually settled into just being a pretty normal song but just which happens to be in 5/4.

Mavin: I like when things are in 5/4 or 7/4 or odd times, but if there's a pulse behind it and you don't realize that it's in that odd time and you can dance along to it. And people aren't like, "Oh my god, I can't figure out what's going on." They're just like, "Yay." But then the nerds are like, "Oh, this is cool."

There's this perception of you guys as being these technical masters, but often it seems to be said in a flippant way — as if you play to sound flashy. But – especially on this album – each song, even if it's built around improvisation or a moment of inspiration, feels so deliberately put together.

Palm: People are like, "Oh, yeah, you're a jam band." Are you f****** kidding me? Do you know how intricate and specific all these arrangements are? Everything is super intentional. Just because people don't understand the complexity of it, they're like, "Oh, it's messy. So it must be improvised." It takes away from our credit as arrangers and composers.

Moss: It's a language that we've been developing this whole time. Once we learn a section, you can learn it meticulously enough that you have the freedom within that song to play with it, and that could be taken as improv – and it is, in a sense. But you've learned this whole end of the song, and you just see them as different sentences, and you can elaborate on them as they come up. These days, for us to learn a song is much quicker than it used to be, because we've developed a language and we understand each other before we even finish playing the idea.

Mavin: Thinking back to the way that we put together tunes in the beginning, just think about how much time we spent on " Lace Skull " for instance --

Bender: I wanted to quit the band so many times.

Mavin: We'd do eight bars for two hours just to get the right fitting. And then we'd go "Cool, let's go to the next eight bars." And then we'd loop that for f****** ages until we felt good about it. We don't do that anymore.

How did you guys get Arthur Verocai to work with you?

Bender: Nai's persistence

Palm: In interviews, they always ask, "Who's your dream collab?" For us, our band is already a four-way collaboration. So for someone to come into the mix, you want them to be unique unto themselves and bring something that we couldn't create with the four of us.

And so, yeah, it was just like: "Oh my God, what if we got Arthur Verocai to do strings?" Then I just harassed our manager. It all came together really quickly. Arthur was like, "Yeah, I'm down to do an arrangement. Is the band going to come to Rio for the studio?" And we were like, "Oh my God, that'll never happen." Then we said, "F*** it. Let's pull together a super janky South American tour to at least pay for our flights, because we want to be there." Arthur ended up doing a string arrangement for "Stone or Lavender" after we came home as well.

It seems poetic that you guys worked with Arthur. There was a real moment where it seemed like he was going to be lost to obscurity.

Bender: It was interesting talking to him about it in the studio. He said he never really wanted to be in front of the music. He wanted to be behind the music. He didn't really have that deep desire to be the famous singer, famous front man kind of thing. He just was like, "I want to arrange the music. I want to make things that are beautiful."

It seems to me like there's still joy in the music you make and in the process of making it – as opposed to bands that have more friction and turmoil. Nai, do you feel that's true, even if you're handling heavier stuff lyrically? Is the band still a source of joy?

Palm: It saved my life. It's my purpose. Especially dealing with all the breast cancer mortality s***, it makes you really evaluate what you want from your life. It really could have just been like, "Well, being in a band is hard. I'm going to go and start a lavender farm and just chill and look after myself." But it's always been really clear to me, even more so after this record, that my happy place is collaborating in a studio with these little nerds. And that's all I want to do. It's basically like time travel and you're cheating death in a way, because it lives as long as people interact with it. And that gives me comfort; that's to have real purpose.

Render later said t he arrest stemmed from a misunderstanding with a security guard and that he expected to be exonerated.

OK Go is a rock band originally from Chicago. The band is composed of Damian Kulash, Tim Nordwind, Dan Konopka, and Andy Ross. In 2007, the band's video for "Here It Goes Again," which featured the band dancing on treadmills, won a Grammy Award for Best Music Video.

What other bands are in the 80/35 lineup for 2024?

Other artists like Hiatus Kaiyote, Dreamer Isioma, Bully, SUSTO, Foxy Shazam, Winona Fighter and Durry will perform throughout the weekend.

An exact schedule isn't available yet. Organizers expect to add additional acts in the weeks ahead.

Live music will run continuously during the two-day festival on multiple stages, according to a news release. There will be one main stage in the paid area. Additional areas will offer free music and entertainment throughout Water Works Park.

Organizers said in a news release that this event is open to anyone and free to the public.

What's new at 80/35 this year?

The event will move this year to Water Works Park , across Fleur Drive from Gray's Lake Park in Des Moines, after 14 years in the downtown Western Gateway Park.

From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. What is the difference between these 2 Moscow metro tours on the same tour group page? One is less expensive than the other but both have positive reviews.

We would like to go on this tour but could not decide which one to book. Thank you.

I see the only difference - one mentioned Spanish-speaking guide, the other not-presumably English...
