Hiatus Kaiyote are a band hailing from Melbourne, Australia who formed in 2011. Since debuting, the band have released two singles along with an E.P, and have made a reputation for themselves as one of the most acclaimed neo-soul acts of today.

In an age where a lot of artists go to extreme, and some might say ill-advised, lengths to stay ahead of the curve and out of the crowd, Hiatus Kaiyote go further than most by describing their sound as “Multi-Dimensional, Polyrhythmic Gangster Sh*t”. It would take a very special band to live up to that, but fortunately, in the capable hands of lead singer and songwriter Nai Palm, Hiatus Kaiyote live up to that promise and more besides. She has been the driving force of the band since the very beginning, at first performing solo concerts before drafting in bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin and multi-instrumentalist Perrin Moss to form a proper band around her songs.

The year after they formed, the band self-released their debut album “Tawk Tomahawk”, an album that was so acclaimed that it netted them a deal with the Sony Masterworks imprint label Flying Buddha, who re-released the album in 2013. This re-released version of the album included a collaboration with A Tribe Called Quest legend Q-Tip, who's just one of the many musical icons who've given the band their seal of approval. Since then, the band have released another, similarly acclaimed studio album entitled “Choose Your Weapon”, and continued to be one of the most exciting and esoteric groups of their generation. For that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

You tell me Hiatus Kaiyote and I tell, you they are from the heavens themselves!

A band that specialises in Neo-Soul, a genre you rarely ever hear of, this may even be your first time coming across this genre, but I assure you if you put your faith in Hiatus Kaiyote, then you , my friend have nothing at all to fear!

Finding them by accident I will admit, as I am a fan of Q - Tip and a friend told of a collaboration he had done with an Australian band, I will admit that I was a bit confused due to the fact that I did not even realise there were many Australian artists out there and that Q - Tip would perform with a boyband.

I judged too soon because, they aren't even a boyband and the lead singer is extremely beautiful with a voice to match Nai Palm, yes it sounds like Napalm and with the fire they come with that name is completely allowed!

Just missing out on a Grammy, you can see that they are a very talented band and that is me speaking without bias, as a neutral source of information. Men lie, women lie, facts however speak for themselves and their talent is a testimony for their skill.

The band, when performing live are a rare breed of artists, taking the time to talk to the fan base and tell them little back stories relating to the creation of songs, or even just having a bit of banter, they work a crowd well with ease and finesse. When performing their song 'Nakamarra' the crowd really got into the performance and began cheering on the band after each small moment where lyrics were not present. The sound is very calming and so beautiful that you won't even know it's over until the instruments stop and you're left abandoned without the warmth of the bass and soulful singing.

I say, take a chance, you will not be disappointed.

Phenomenal,

from the moment Family member Remi stepped onto the stage to warm the crowd you could feel an air of excitement fill the room.

As the crowd got thicker up came the pace of Remi and really started to get the crowd together to loosen up before the highly anticipated Hiatus Kaiyote were to shower us with musical genius.

There's so many bands that have similar influences to this musically charismatic quadruple. But I've yet to discover a band that pull off such varying and distinct emotions throughout their catalogue of songs. From the smooth fluttering flow of mobius streak and nakamarra to the crunching grit that makes your head bang in swamp thing, all four of these artists are truly talented... an absolute inspiration for music.

I travelled to Manchester to see these guys as london was sold out . I can't recommend them more than travelling on a 5 hour coach to the other end of the country just tomwitness these guys work so magically together.... oh and Nai Palm.... If you don't fall

I love with her soft and sweet voice from the moment she's speaks just wait...wait till she sings

I don't need to write a long review.

If you've heard their records, that's what they sound like live. Plus unreleased stuff, jams and vamps on tunes, and more/different solos. Great vibes all around, awesome stage presence, they draw a really nice crowd. Was amazing seeing them live, the musicianship in this group is really phenomenal. All their music sounds good, but it FEELS great.

So that's what you get out of seeing them live: you FEEL it, not just hear it. I danced a lot, sang along, and had a great time. I recommend doing the same if you get the chance.

This was my second time seeing Hiatus Kaiyote live. The first time I went was one month ago and I walked away from it thinking it was the best concert experience of my life. After last night's concert, I can say I was wrong because last night's concert somehow managed to be even BETTER than the first concert. 12 hours later, I am still in a total daze and caught up in the pure beauty, energy, and extremely good vibes that filled the room. i LOVE LOVE LOVE this band! This concert was beyond epic...

Awesome band. Perfect for music junkies/jazz lab nerds. Despite the lead singer having the flu, she absolutely rocked the venue, and the crowd became so into it that the band became surprisingly impressed by our presence as we were impressed by their performance. The show was so good that they promised to come back to Chicago shortly. Super nice people too - spoke to them behind merch table and they were great! Very cool show.

jake-padorr’s profile image

Loved them - saw them in London at the O2 Kentish Town in April.

Mix of songs from the albums plus some new tracks had the whole arena buzzing & singing along. Everything from the playlist to the backing singers to the audience interaction was on point.

You know it's a good concert when you don't want to leave and want to start the night again.

Karen1000’s profile image

It was just amazing! They are very profesiobal, all talented, and after all they are artists. I mean I felt incredible sensations during the show.

The public was warmed up, everybody was singing dancing and jumping...

Very good atmosphere.

I'll do it again if I can!

Niccoloco’s profile image

This group is really popular, but I don't get the hype. The groove switches up too frequently and the band has a lot going on at the same time. I didn't enjoy this concert but the audience seemed really into it so it must be a cult following sort of thing.

musiclover1221’s profile image

Simply put: They were absolutely incredible. Nai Palm has a magical presence on stage and her and the other band members were in this ridiculous groove-sync all night long. The crowd loved them and they loved us. A beautiful experience.

juliette-barasch’s profile image

I was a big wild child grooving deep...had a great time listening to the latest songs and some from the last album. The show was better than the album which is saying a lot since their rhythms are unusual. It was still funky...very.

Stranger Suggests: Hiatus Kaiyote and Digable Planets, Capitol Hill Block Party, Longlegs in 35mm, ML Buch, and as Much Soft Serve as You Can Eat

One really great thing to do every day of the week.

hiatus kaiyote tour poster

WEDNESDAY 7/17

Hiatus Kaiyote and Digable Planets

(MUSIC) Aussie jazz-funk ensemble Hiatus Kaiyote will take to Remlinger Farms in support of their fourth album, Love Heart Cheat Code , which embraces spontaneity with improvised tracks like "Sparkle Tape Break Up" and "And We Go Gentle." However, the show’s real draw is that Digable Planets, the greatest hip-hop group of all time (in my opinion) is opening. The trio of rappers, who have adopted the insect alter-egos Butterfly, Ladybug Mecca, and Doodlebug, will perform classic tracks from their influential jazz-rap albums Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) and Blowout Comb . If you're not familiar with the group, I suggest listening to their 1993 track " La Femme Fetal ," which tackles the persistent issues of abortion rights and fascism. ( Remlinger Farms , 32610 NE 32nd St, Carnation, 5:30 pm, $54.50, all ages ) AUDREY VANN

THURSDAY 7/18

Longlegs in 35mm

(FILM) I haven't been this excited about a horror film in a while, and the fervor over Longlegs is due in no small part to the headlines it's inspiring: "Nicolas Cage manages to top his twisted legacy," says Dateline ; "Oz Perkins' latest gets under your skin and festers like a putrid nightmare," says Bloody Disgusting ; "New horror movie dubbed ‘the best serial killer film in recent memory,’" says The Independent . None of this really surprises me because the marketing team for Longlegs has been laying it on thick for months. They set up a freaky-ass phone number that I called earlier this year, only to be so creeped out later that I wondered if I'd inadvertently cursed myself. The film's trailers are also beautifully weird and rife with symbolism. Even Letterboxd users have given Longlegs a 3.8 rating, which is pretty respectable for a modern horror film. My advice? Go into this one knowing as little as possible. ( Grand Illusion , multiple showtimes through July 25, $9–$12 ) LINDSAY COSTELLO

FRIDAY 7/19

Capitol Hill Block Party

(MUSIC) This year, CHBP offers a treasure trove of Gen-Z favorites. Droves of festival-goers will crowd the streets of Capitol Hill to see lineup highlights like pop music's reigning camp queen Chappell Roan, electronic hip-hop heavy Kaytranada, and indie pop trio Cannons. This isn’t your typical lounge-in-the-grass-type music festival, but a bustling party that involves nine stages—both indoors and outdoors. Unfortunately, "slut pop" star Kim Petras had to pull out of her headlining spot , but fear not! Alt-pop sensation Remi Wolf will take her place. ( Capitol Hill , E Pine St between Broadway and 12th Ave, July 19–21, $115–$395, all ages ) AUDREY VANN

SATURDAY 7/20

Lucy Kim: Mutant Optics

hiatus kaiyote tour poster

(VISUAL ART) Seoul-born interdisciplinary artist Lucy Kim has learned to "embrace distortion" in her hybrid works. While collaborating with scientists at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Kim helped design a fascinating new printing process that uses "genetically modified bacteria cells that produce melanin directly on paper." Okay, I'm hooked already. The process reveals how melanin can form images, and in Mutant Optics, visitors can view examples made from vanilla plants, which are historically connected to colonization and global economics. If you're intrigued by the intersections of bioengineering, perception, and "social and cultural constructions of race," this show is a sure thing. ( Henry Art Gallery , 15th Ave NE and NE 41st St, Thurs–Sun through Feb 1, 2025, free–$20, all ages ) LINDSAY COSTELLO

SUNDAY 7/21

(MUSIC) Seattle rarely plays host to Danish musicians, especially of the high calibre of ML Buch. The Copenhagen-based guitarist/vocalist/composer (full name: Mary Louise Buch) has been releasing fascinating, tech-savvy twists on singer/songwriterisms since 2017. Early in her career, Buch realized that, sure, beautiful, wistful melodies sung with understated gravitas are great, but songs really take off when they're disrupted with mysterious distortions. It's the baffling intrusions of synthesized vocal utterances and use of open tunings on a seven-string Stratocaster (among other axes) that distinguish this sonic adventurer from the world's middling traditionalists. On albums such as 2020's Skinned and 2023's succès d'estime Suntub , Buch finds the golden mean between the organic and the artificial, between accessibility and experimentation. Now, fusions of minimalist art pop and electronica clog streaming services, but Buch's hit with more subtlety and inventiveness than most. Ultimately, Buch's is popular music—or it will be—once the human race evolves a bit more. ( Madame Lou's , 2505 First Ave, 8:30 pm, $23, 21+ ) DAVE SEGAL

MONDAY 7/22

Hanako O'Leary: Kamon

hiatus kaiyote tour poster

(VISUAL ART) Weaving together Shinto mythology and contemporary feminist ideologies, local artist Hanako O’Leary’s origami works in Kamon create a unique visual vocabulary embedded with stories from her recent travels to Japan’s Setonaikai Islands and her childhood summers by the Seto Inland Sea. If you saw Izanami, O'Leary's first solo museum presentation at the Frye earlier this year, Kamon is an essential follow-up. O'Leary will lead an artist talk and origami workshop "intended for those who identify as women or daughters" on July 27. ( Gallery 4Culture , 101 Prefontaine Pl S, Mon-Fri 9 am–5 pm, through Aug 1, free, all ages ) LINDSAY COSTELLO

TUESDAY 7/23

Eat Soft Serve 🍦

hiatus kaiyote tour poster

(FOOD) According to a heat stress-induced Google search on a recent 87-degree day, there are more than 25 places to get good soft serve in Seattle. Making decisions even more difficult, many shops are doing their damnedest to put their distinctive, ahem, twist on the treat. Now, we could go from shop to shop, tasting, testing, and comparing notes to find which soft serve is the best soft serve, but… why? Life doesn’t have to be about finding the best. Like so many of the world’s greatest foods, what’s “best” is in the tastebuds of the beholder and can easily shift depending on moods, weather, and cravings. With that in mind, some of The Stranger ’s hungriest food experts sampled eight soft-serve spots across town to help you find your favorite for the summer—or just today. Read all about 'em in our new summer issue—on stands now!—and then go get yourself one of summer's best snacks! MEGAN SELING

Grammy-nominated Australian jazz-funk outfit Hiatus Kaiyote tour their fourth album, Love Heart Cheat Code, the group’s first full-length release since 2021’s Mood Valiant.

Hiatus Kaiyote’s fourth album, Love Heart Cheat Code is a snapshot of four musicians dancing together on the edge, 11 playful, exuberant tracks that feel light and shine light —from the opening flourish of ‘Dreamboat’ to the closing chants of their interpretation of ‘White Rabbit.’

As fans might expect, Love Heart Cheat Code is filled with any number of incredible performances: Bender’s bass chords on ‘Dimitri,’ Perrin’s polyrhythmic crescendo on ‘Make Friends,’ Simon’s galloping piano on ‘How to Meet Yourself,’ and Nai’s guitar and vocal virtuosity throughout ‘Everything’s Beautiful.’

HIATUS KAIYOTE SHARE NEW SINGLE ‘TELESCOPE’

Post Image

NEW ALBUM LOVE HEART CHEAT CODE DUE JUNE 28TH VIA BRAINFEEDER RECORDS / NINJA TUNE

‘expansive and psychedelic’ – Pitchfork

‘Apacious and ebullient…. Another giant leap for Hiatus Kaiyote.’ – The Guardian

‘An undeniable showcase of the band’s vast musical range and talent for arrangement.’ – NPR

‘Through bright textures and sunlit Brazilian rhythms, it scores a trek from darkness to light’ – The New York Times

‘An intoxicating confidence.’ – The Observer

[Thursday 2, May, 2024] Following the announcement of their forthcoming album, Hiatus Kaiyote return to share a new single ‘Telescope’ . The third track from Love Heart Cheat Code due Friday 28th June via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune , ‘Telescope’ is a reflection of the collective’s personal as well as otherworldly inspirations.

On ‘Telescope’, the band transports listeners to an intimate crux in the universe to find solace in their shared musicality. Speaking on the track’s significance Bender (bass) shares, ‘NASA has a website where you can type in your birthday and then it will tell you the most interesting thing that the Hubble telescope took a picture of on your birthday. And so each of the four verses is based on our four birthdays.’ Bender’s heavenly object was Abell (2744); Simon’s the Einstein Ring; Nai’s the ‘Red Pearl on the face on Jupiter,’ and Pez’s a nameless star that exploded with a light many times brighter than our sun. Musically, the song was triggered by Simon’s play with a patch from a 1980s-era synthesiser, Sequential Circuits’ Prophet 600.

Love Heart Cheat Code is a snapshot of four musicians dancing together on the edge, 11 playful, exuberant tracks that shine light. Yet, for a band that made a name for itself with its complexity and received critical praise and multiple Grammy nominations for their embrace of maximalism, one of the most striking things about Love Heart Cheat Code is its simplicity. ‘I’m a maximalist. I complicate fucking everything,’ Nai laughs. ‘But the more you go through things in life, you become more relaxed and uninhibited. Sometimes you can still have depth and reach people and really stop dancing around the fact: What do you want to communicate to people? And I feel like this album is a result of that clarity for us. We didn’t need to spell out complexity if the song didn’t call for it.’

On the forthcoming album, the band’s direction is not always attained directly; less deliberate, and more via deliberation and drift: in jam sessions that last late into the night and early mornings; in meals shared; in messing around with equipment and with each other. The album also features other Melbourne-based musicians like Taylor “Chip” Crawford, who played an instrument of his own invention called the frello; guitarist Tom Martin; and flautist Nikodimos; and the unprecedented addition of a very important creative force: Mario Caldato, whose work with the Beastie Boys and Seu Jorge is the stuff of legends.

Hiatus Kaiyote have always spoken about their albums as microcosms, a complete ecosystem. On Love Heart Cheat Code the band envisioned a strong visual world to coincide with the music and they worked with Sri Lanken-born, Toronto-based multimedia artist Rajni Perera using one of her paintings as the artwork for the album. Illustrator Chloe Biocca and Grey Ghost then collaborated with the band to create visual symbols and associated artifacts for each of the tracks on the project that pair alongside Rajni’s painting. The artifacts morphed into real products, custom jewellery, edible goods, ranging from the inspired to the haunted and utterly random. Eventually this led the band to conceive of an entirely imagined place, a Love Heart Cheat Code supermarket. The band; its employees who create these products, market them, stack the shelves, clean the aisles. In the banality of creating art into ”‘product” for the modern world, the band find solace in each item and song as they are packed with transcendent and resplendent musical magic.

Throughout the album, Hiatus Kaiyote emphasises sensing rather than knowing, a type of trust that can only be brought through creative harmony and hours of studio sessions. The result is a wide-eyed, cohesive, yet relaxed body of work that reflects a deeper understanding of themselves and the music they wish to share with the world around them.

Closure In Moscow to release new studio album “Soft Hell” on June 11th 2023

Closure In Moscow Soft Hell cover

“This is the first song that our producer Andrei serendipitously hear the demo of in a livestream, leading to a meet up and kicking off the entire production process, so it feels completely fitting to have it be the first taste people get of the album”, explains singer Christopher de Cinque . “It’s also the song that feels most like a return to the songwriting sensibilities of our early work, while still reflecting how the band has evolved”.

The track and video arrive as the band also reveals information about “Soft Hell”, which was produced by Andrei Eremin (Hiatus Kaiyote, Chet Faker): “It’s finally here for you to pre-order, the last 9 years distilled down to 50 minutes. We’ve put blood, sweat and years into this, and fully believe when you hear these tracks, the wait will have been worth it. We know you have to take our word on that for the time being, but the wait is almost over.

Getting comfortable with chronic discomfort caused by the choices that fears and trauma lead you to make. This is life in a soft hell. There are enough distractions to stave off facing up to it, you can keep yourself in denial to avoid it, and things can just keep ticking along. Life becomes a fever dream of creature comforts and time killers, floating further into a lake of fire. People come along to pull you out, but they too get burned when you feel too stuck to climb with them.

Thank you to everyone that had been patiently waiting for new music. Everyone involved with working on this went so above and beyond because they believed in it, and we hope you hear what they heard too”.

Pre-order “Soft Hell” here .

Tracklist: 1. Jaeger Bomb 2. Primal Sinister 3. Absolute Terror Field 4. Better Way 5. Holy Rush 6. Keeper of the Lake 7. Lock & key 8. Don Juan Triumphant 9. Soft Hell 10. Fine 11. Lovelash 12. My Dearest Kate

Closure in Moscow formed in 2006 and soon attracted attention for their dynamic, catchy and energetic take on post-hardcore with their debut EP, “The Penance and the Patience”. They quickly signed to Equal Vision Records and relocated to the USA, recording their full-length debut “First Temple” with producer Kris Crummett and touring extensively with acts including Coheed and Cambria, Emery and Dance Gavin Dance. They returned to Australia for the Homebake Festival in 2009, completed a gruelling trek on the 2010 Warped Tour and all the while First Temple quickly earned a dedicated following for fans of their blistering musicianship, impossibly catchy melodies and formidable grooves. Pink Lemonade followed in 2014, with the band continuing to tour extensively, both pre and post-release. Alternative Press said Pink Lemonade “is anything but simple” and Heavy Blog Is Heavy noted “… psychedelic and theatrical… this isn’t your dad’s Closure in Moscow record”.
