Q&A: Neal Schon On The ‘Freedom’ Of Journey, His Friendship With Carlos Santana And Much More

Journey will release Freedom , their first album in 11 years, this Friday (July 8). With the 11-year gap between records, the band's longest break between albums, and the presence of drummer/producer Narada Michael Walden, Freedom , according to guitarist Neal Schon, is a true representation of who Journey is in 2022.

Neal Schon on Journey’s New LP ‘Freedom,’ Ambitious 50th Anniversary Plans

It’s been 11 years since Journey released their last studio record, and for a while it was looking like they’d never get around to making one. “Nobody was really interested in making new music,” Journey founder and guitarist and Neal Schon tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from his California home. “It’s very difficult to get new material played and to get people familiar with it before you go out and play live. Everybody in the band was like, ‘I don’t want to do it.'”

Journey & Toto Totally Rock North Charleston On 'Freedom Tour'

Written by Jeff Walker. 24 April 2024 Posted in Arts & Culture

Iconic Bands Blow the Roof Off the Coliseum,  Journey Celebrating 50th Anniversary

Jeff Walker,  Entertainment Writer

aaaaaaaajourneytour1

A near sellout and overly appreciative crowd, comprised of mostly concert goers 55 and older, enjoyed a trip down memory lane as the two bands performed over three hours at the North Charleston Coliseum offering up 30 songs, with Journey afforded twice as many given the wealth of their music arsenal. Truth be told, while baby boomers were well represented Tuesday night, Generation X, Y, and Z were on hand because younger music fans appreciate great songs, and even greater musicians.

Toto with founding guitarist Steve Lukather and longtime lead vocalist Joe Williams in tow opened the show, taking diehard fans back to 1978 with 'Girl Goodbye' , a lesser known track from the band's self-title debut album. They quickly rebounded with a more familiar number, following with 'Hold the Line' which spent six weeks inside the Top 10 during the fall of '78. Lukather said that the rumors he was less enthused by '99' were unfounded. The soft rock number he sang lead on went to #26 in early 1980, and remains in the band's concert lineup.

'Dying On My Feet' off 2006's 'Falling In Between' was less recognizable, but led into their Adult Contemporary chart topping single 'I'll Be Over You' . The hit track off 1986's 'Fahrenheit' album was the first time Williams took the reins as lead singer.

aaaaaaaajourneytour5

Ironically the bands seventh album 'The Seventh One' (1988) allowed Toto to rock a little harder and showcase their musicianship on 'Home of the Brave' , setting the tone for three radio friendly numbers including one cover. To the delight of Beatles fans Toto did justice to 'With a Little Help From My Friends' albeit in Joe Cocker style, before closing their 55 minute set on their two biggest across the board hits.

1982 was a banner year for Toto. The release of the multi-platinum and three time Grammy Award winning album 'Toto IV' solidified the bands place in rock n' roll. With concert goers on their feet, swaying back and forth, Toto said goodbye with extended versions of 'Rosanna' and 'Africa' . The songs reached No#2 and No#1 respectively, and provided Toto with global acclaim.

With fans primed for an evening of soft rock, hard rock, and straight up pop ballads, Journey took the stage 20 minutes later. With founding guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player & rhythm guitarist Jonathan Cain (1980) still piloting the band's legacy, Journey continues to be one of the most durable bands to emerge during the heyday of arena rock, easily supplying classic rock with a host of non-stop hits.

Running full throttle through 21 songs, with over a dozen still played on radio formats worldwide on a daily basis, the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame band took concert goers on the musical 'journey' to yesteryear. 'Only the Young' which has its own inspirational history established the mood for Journey's two hour performance and reminded fans rock n' roll drinks from the fountain of youth.

Although never released as a single, 'Stone in Love' was the first album to feature Cain on keyboards. The track off 'Escape' (1982) has become a mainstay on rock radio formats as well as a fan favorite, and it undoubtedly showcases Arnel Pineda's vocals, ranging from tenor to high tenor. Using his voice to front Journey since 2008, Pineda has proven he can continue to raise the bar originally etched in stone by the legendary Steve Perry.

The band stayed with 'Escape' with veteran drummer Deen Castronovo taking the lead on 'Keep On Runnin' followed by the a track that blew the roof off the coliseum and got thousands of concert goers out of their seats. 'Don't Stop Believin' is arguably Journey's most successful song and has invaded pop culture time and time again. While many could suggest the sing-along number might be an encore song, with so many hits in their songbook, the massive up-tempo and melodic hit is welcome anytime during a Journey show.

A triple threat hit parade ensued with another three easily recognizable songs. 'Lights', 'Send Her My Love', and 'Who's Crying Now' kept fans on their feet with everyone in arena singing choruses in unison. Nearing the midway mark Cain and Castronovo shared vocals on 'Just the Same Way ' a rare track from 1979's 'Evolution' album. Perhaps more familiar to diehard Journey followers, the song allows for all the musical instruments to shine.

Celebrating their most recent album 'Freedom', released in 2022 and the title to their tour, the band proved they still can rock hard with 'Let It Rain'. They revisited 'Evolution' sending up a bluesy pop rock rendition of 'Lovin', Touchin' Squeezin'. Their first ever Top 40 hit electrified the crowd as 'Na na na na na na, Na na na na nas' reverberated throughout the North Charleston Coliseum.

Cain who's been in Journey for 44 years enjoyed a solo spotlight, delivering a five minute piano solo that was more a tribute to orchestral music. It was a nice lead in to 'Open Arms' and 'Faithfully' two of Journey's most played power ballads. Cain, a professed Christian said he wrote the latter while on a tour bus in 1981 as a salute to loved ones who remain behind, sending the evening's offering out to all those who serve in the military, which received thunderous applause.

Schon's eight minute jam led into the final stretch beginning with his segue way into a hardcore favorite. 'Wheel In the Sky' from 1977 helped put Journey on the map as the band transitioned from jazz fusion to a more edgier pop and hard rock style. The single off their fourth album 'Infinity' was the first to chart on Billboard's Top 100, reaching #57. The extended version allowed Pineda to circle the coliseum extending high fives and handshakes to adoring fans.

Although 'Wheel' didn't crack the coveted Top 40, the final three songs did allowing even casual Journey fans an opportunity to join the band on familiar choruses as the show was coming to a close. 'Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)' and 'Be Good to Yourself' both cracked the Top 10, with the closing number 'Any Way You Want It' (Top 30) confirming Journey are a progressive hard rock band that produce haunting melodies, that even casual fans can't erase from the memory banks.

Journey arose during the late 1970's as one of industry's most predominant arena/stadium rock bands, much to the credit of Neal Schon’s remarkable guitar and the soaring voice of Steve Perry, with Arnel Pineda worthy of carrying Perry's vocal baton. That lineage (past & present) along with the songwriting skills of Schon, Perry, and Cain have cemented the bands longevity for decades to come.

While a few veteran acts still thrive on pyrotechnics, lasers, fog machines, and other theatrics to provide additional entertainment, smarter bands with rich musical catalogs let the songs stand on their own. With three large screen surrounding the stage including one as a backdrop, both bands let visual imagery enhance their performances, which was exceptionally moving on 'Faithfully'.

The journey (pun intended) for Journey continues in 2024 as they continue an abbreviated tour with Toto before joining fellow rockers Def Leppard, Heart, Cheap Trick, and the Steve Miller Band on select dates in America and in Europe later this year. Without question, Journey rocks, so I recommend catching them anywhere near your hometown. Will Journey Make It Through Their 2024 Freedom Tour?

Will Journey Make It Through Their 2024 Freedom Tour?

As one of the all-time greatest bands, Journey’s 2024 Freedom Tour could be a swan song for the group.

A fight between original member Neal Schon and longtime collaborator Jonathan Cain threatens to upset their plans.

Today, we’re taking a deep dive into the fraught history of Journey to see if their tour can go off without a hitch.

Let’s start believin’!

The History of Journey

Formed in 1973 by former Santana guitarist Neal Schon, Ross Valory, Prairie Prince, and George Tickner, Journey’s legacy began over 50 years ago. Primarily an instrumental project, the group brought on Greg Rollie, another former Santana member, on keys and vocals.

Their early albums were jazz-rock fusion records that played to limited audiences. But in 1977, with the rise of acts like Boston and Foreigner, they saw the writing on the wall. They brought on a singer from San Francisco named Steve Perry. His soaring tenor brought them to the mainstream with their 1978 release, Infinity.

As Rollie saw his way out, several lineup changes brought Cain in on keys and vocals. A series of popular recordings followed with Evolution in 1979, Departure in 1980, and Escape in 1981. One of their most famous songs, Don’t Stop Believin’ , came from that album.

They toured stadiums around the globe for several years and even more records. Frontiers in 1983 and Raised on Radio in 1986 were successful by most measures.

A Rift Forms

But tensions grew within the band, and when Perry left in 1987, they went on hiatus. Schon and Cain formed a new group, Bad English, and Perry faded off into the sunset for a while.

In 1996, Journey reunited to release Trial by Fire and planned a massive tour. But Perry injured his hip hiking in Hawaii and asked them to postpone. Instead of waiting for him, the other members found a new singer and carried on unfaithfully.

Other singers played with them, including Steve Augeri and Jeff Scott Soto. Then, Schon announced a new singer in a story practically made for the Internet. Arnel Pineda, an unknown Filipino artist he discovered online, became the voice of Journey.

Deep Dive: Who Is Journey’s New Lead Singer?

By 2022, they’d released three albums with Pineda center stage and planned an epic performance lineup around the Freedom record.

In September of the following year, they announced their 2024 Freedom Tour. Spanning 30 cities across the United States, it promises to be everything fanatics expect. Celebrating their golden anniversary on the road seems like the perfect way to recognize the impact of their music.

However, a feud between Schon and Cain might derail the band on this journey.

A photo of the crowd at a rock concert, like you might see during Journey's tour.

What Happened With Steve Perry and Journey?

Perry and his bandmates worked hard to make Journey one of the most successful acts of the late 70s and 80s. But after singing for millions of fans, he decided to pursue a solo career. While he didn’t see the same fame as his former group, he kept at it.

In the mid-1990s, they decided to reunite and recorded Trial by Fire in anticipation of a tour. Perry’s injury put all of that in jeopardy.

Doctors suggested surgery as a quick fix, but he wanted to try alternative methods before going under the knife. According to Perry, they pressured him to make a fast decision he wasn’t prepared to make.

The band that fans knew and loved was gone. The group left Perry to recover from his hiking accident and charted a new course.

Don’t expect him to have a cameo on Journey’s latest tour. He’s adamant that he’s finished with them. In a Rolling Stone article, he says, “You can still love someone but not want to work with them.”

And that’s all he has to say on the matter.

About Journey’s Freedom Tour

Prog-rock fans can get their airbrushed vans out of storage and grow out their hair because Journey is back on the road. In some ways, they’ve never left, performing consistently for the last few decades. But their Freedom Tour 2024 celebrates 50 years of music, so it’s also a homecoming.

While the record came out in 2022, these concerts have something for all devotees. Journey’s Freedom Tour officially started in February of 2022, and they’ve been playing dates since.

The official 2024 version features Toto as a special guest. However, a long-running fight between Schon and Cain meant a few others were along for the ride. Off-duty police officers guarding their dressing rooms were an unexpected twist at the 2022 shows. We’ll have to wait and see if they appear on the next leg.

Who Is Singing for Journey on the Freedom Tour?

Arnel Pineda is the official lead singer of Journey, as he’s been since 2008. But former member Greg Rollie performed on a stop in Austin, Texas. Since he lives in the city, he dropped in for a five-song encore in February 2022.

Sitting behind his beloved Hammond organ, he crooned Just the Same Way , Of a Lifetime , Feeling That Way , Anytime , and Santana’s Black Magic Woman . Fans were ecstatic that there might be a more extended reunion, but that wasn’t the case. Two members of the band were opposed to him appearing at all.

Perry won’t be returning, that much is sure. Pineda also let his frustration be known. After nearly 15 years with the group, he’s annoyed that listeners still dream of yesteryear. “I’m with the band to sing the legacy…they can fire me anytime,” he says on Loudwire.

For now, at least, he’s still belting out the hits and taking his time in the spotlight one day at a time.

Why Are Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain Fighting?

During the run-up to the 2020 election, Schon and Cain had a public fight that still threatens to disrupt Journey’s tour. After stating in interviews that their music shouldn’t be political, Cain changed his tune. Playing Don’t Stop Believing at Trump rallies, he came out in strong support of the former president.

Schon was enraged. He called Cain a hypocrite and even published old interviews proving his point. All of the back and forth boiled over into courtrooms and dressing rooms.

It isn’t the first time the two have been at odds. Together, they drove out former members Ross Valory and Steve Smith in 2020. Then, they turned on each other.

Cain found Schon’s assistant snooping around his dressing room and hired off-duty cops to guard his belongings. That wasn’t a leap because Neal and his wife had already done the same.

The two leaked financial records and credit card statements and even briefly lost access to their corporate bank account. But they can still share the stage night after night, hopefully through the end of Freedom Tour 2024.

However, if you’re hoping to catch the band on stage, you might want to consider ticket insurance.

Journey’s Freedom Tour Could Go Either Way

This band’s music is the soundtrack of many smoky rooms around the world. Their current lead singer even got his start doing karaoke covers of the group in the Philippines. But Journey’s Freedom Tour 2024 might be at risk because of a fight between key members Schon and Cain.

As long as they can keep it together and stay out of politics, we hope they’ll be playing long into 2024. But it’s a good thing their schedule ends in April 2024. We’re not sure they’ll survive until November!

"I have stood on stage during some difficult situations": Journey's Jonathan Cain on band animosity, the long life of Don't Stop Believin', and why they don't play Germany

AOR giants Journey are currently on tour, and will bring the show to the UK for the first time in over a decade later this year

Journey onstage

Considered to be a true kingpin of 1970s American hard rock, Journey need no introduction. Don’t Stop Believin’ might be more than four decades old now, but the song has brought the San Franciscan band a whole new level of fame in recent times. Below, we catch up with Jonathan Cain, who co-wrote it with guitarist Neal Schon and former singer Steve Perry.

Journey are currently on tour in the US with Def Leppard , with an 11-date arena tour lined up for the UK and Ireland later in the year. Tickets for all shows are on sale now .

Alt

Official verification is still required, but Forbes magazine recently claimed that Don’t Stop Believin’ is the most popular song of all time, so congratulations for that.

There are many, many, many great songs in our time, and that distinction is such an honour. And of course being on the road, the accolade was also pretty timely for us.

Steve Perry, one of the song’s co-writers, said he was “emotionally stunned” by the news. He’s been out of Journey since 1998. Do you or the rest of the band have much contact with him these days?

Not really, though I know him vicariously through my son-in-law Trev Lukather [son of Toto guitarist Steve] who gives me up updates. Trev often says: “Someday I’ll get you together with Steve over a cup of coffee,” to which I reply: “Send him my love” [a reference to the song Send Her My Love from Journey’s 1983 album Frontiers ]. Steve has been active singing backgrounds on people’s records, and he was on Dolly Parton’s record [ Rockstar ]. It’s good to see that happening.

As part of the band’s ongoing fiftieth anniversary celebrations, Journey’s upcoming UK tour is their first visit here since 2013.

That’s a long time! It’s been too long. We were caught up touring here [in the US]. We would ask our management, and they’d tell us there has to be a demand. We know full well that places like Germany are not our market. Even when we go there, nobody comes. Our true fans are in the UK, and when we looked into things it was time to bring the lads back.

It’s difficult to believe that Arnel Pineda, Journey’s current vocalist, has been in the band since 2007.

After sixteen years Arnel is no longer the new guy. I call him The Crusher, because every time we throw him a challenge he crushes it. I still remember when we played with Def Leppard and it was the first time Joey [Elliott] had heard him. Joey looked at me, raised an eyebrow and said: “Woah, that kid can sing.” Steve Perry will always be recognised as the architect and the voice, but Arnel is the keeper of our legacy. We’re awfully proud of him.

Journey - Don't Stop Believin' (Live 1981: Escape Tour - 2022 HD Remaster) - YouTube

Many of Journey’s songs are very demanding to perform, and the burnout rate of the band’s past singers speaks for itself, and yet Arnel is still doing great.

We brought in a voice expert from LA to work with him. This guy brought in a kind of metal straw that allows the vocal cords to warm up without putting strain on them. I was sceptical, but this thing really works. It’s genius.

Special guests on the upcoming tour are the acclaimed Illinois power-pop quartet Cheap Trick, who celebrate their own fiftieth anniversary this year. How well do you know those guys?

I toured with them a lot in my band The Babys – Cheap Trick and The Babys was a hot ticket back then [at the end of the 70s]. It was always wall-to-wall young girls. John Waite [Babys frontman] was such a huge fan, he would always want to stay on at the venue and watch Cheap Trick. They made us realise we had to step up to the next level.

There has been some well-publicised animosity within Journey [in 2022 Neal Schon filed a Cease And Desist order against Cain, whose wife, the televangelist Paula White-Cain, is the former US president Donald Trump’s spiritual advisor, after the Journey man performed Don’t Stop Believin ’ at the White House]. How does that manifest itself while the group is on tour?

We take all of that down a notch for the sake of the band. The music is louder [than the negativity]. No matter who has said what, or anything that’s going on in the background, it’s all about bringing the best show that you can bring.

Do the protagonists have separate dressing rooms on tour these days?

[Side-stepping the question] It doesn’t mess with our chemistry. I have stood on stage during some difficult situations. But once you get up there and start playing those songs, all of us in the band are where we are supposed to be. It would be selfish [to let personal issues] affect the show. We owe our fans more than that. Our fans are everything.

How many songs from Journey’s current album Freedom will be on the set-list for this tour?

Right now we’re only playing one [ Let It Rain ], but we are working on a new, new song, and if we can get that up to speed we may be playing that one too. We’ll see.

When you say ‘new, new’ you mean completely unheard, and maybe something that could be on the next album?

Brand new, right out of the box. If it gets accepted then who knows… it might be a single.

Journey - Don't Stop Believin' (Live 2009) [Official Video] - YouTube

Can you share the title?

[Slightly warily] It’s called This Town . It’s about the fans. That fifty-year relationship we’ve had with them. We wrote it about their loyalty. The hook is: ‘ Tonight, it’s all about this town .’

Are you currently working on and stockpiling material for what would be a follow-up to Freedom ?

I don’t know yet. It’s so tough out there. We had hoped for better results with Freedom , even though it was cut-and-paste, a bit of an experiment during covid. The covid song I wrote with Neal, The Way We Used To Be , was tongue-in-cheek all the way, and we weren’t able to release it in time, so it didn’t get much love. I heard a lot of bad covid songs – I mean some really bad ones – so we needed to do something that was really slick. That’s when I had the idea of two lovers not being about to see one another.

What do you think of the special attention that Don’t Stop Believin’ receives, especially after its connection to a brand new audience after it appeared in the US TV series Glee , ahead of all the other songs in Journey’s catalogue?

I don’t think that’s strange. It’s always been a special song to me because it gives us all permission to dream. When I first joined the band, my message to them was that we needed to write a song that spoke to the fans. Don’t Stop Believin’ was a conscious attempt for Steve and I to bring them into our song. There’s a lot of smalltown girls and boys out there wanting to get on to the midnight train to anywhere. And you know that we broke all of the rules with that song?

In what way?

Well, the chorus only happens once, and it comes right at the end. And Neal solos even before Steve sings. And yet it became the most downloaded rock song of all time.

Who was the most surprising person to tell you that they dug Don’t Stop Believin'?

Bruce Springsteen. There was a charity gala, and Bruce, Elton Joh n and Lady Gaga sang it on stage somewhere. It’s out there on the net somewhere, you can check it out.

Kamala Harris used Beyoncé's 'Freedom' in 1st campaign ad. What does the song mean?

Kamala Harris' first 2024 presidential campaign video makes a statement, and uses a Beyoncé song to help.

The video features Beyoncé's 2016 song " Freedom " to reinforce Harris' stance and values as the de facto Democratic nominee leading up to the presidential election.

"In this election, we each face a question: What kind of country do we want to live in?" Harris says in the ad. "There are some people who think we should be a country of chaos, of fear, of hate. But us? We choose something different. We choose freedom."

"The freedom not just to get by, but to get ahead. The freedom to be safe from gun violence. The freedom to make decisions about your own body. We choose a future where no child lives in poverty, where we can all afford healthcare, where no one is above the law," she continues. "We believe in the promise of America and we're ready to fight for it because when we fight, we win."

On Instagram , Beyoncé's mother, Tina Knowles , shared a photo and endorsed Harris, who is currently serving as President Joe Biden's Vice President.

"New, Youthful, Sharp , , energy !!!!" she wrote. "You asked for it and our President Biden did what was best for the country ! Putting personal Ego , power and fame aside. That is the definition of a great leader, . Thank you, President Biden for your service and your leadership . Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s Go ❤️❤️❤️❤️ #kamala2024."

What is 'Freedom' by Beyoncé about?

The song, which features Kendrick Lamar, was originally on Beyoncé’s album “Lemonade," and has become a protest anthem since its release in 2016.

The lyrics are about freedom and liberation on both personal and societal scales.

"Freedom" could be read as someone seeking change in his or her life, which is in line with the broader arc of the album. "Lemonade" is often read as a journey through deception, infidelity, awakening and forgiveness in a romantic relationship.

Beyoncé sings, “Freedom! Freedom! I can’t move / Freedom, cut me loose! Yeah / Freedom! Freedom! Where are you? / ‘Cause I need freedom, too / I break chains all by myself / Won’t let my freedom rot in hell.”

In the outro, Beyoncé plays a recording of her husband Jay Z’s grandmother Hattie White talking about her hardships and how she overcame them.

“I had my ups and downs, but I always find the inner strength to pull myself up. I was served lemons, but I made lemonade,” she says in the recording.

The song's sentiment could just as easily be applied to American society at large.

Beyoncé has aligned "Freedom" with the civil rights movement and the history of slavery in the U.S., making it an inherently political tune.

The lyrics reference the 19th century spiritual “Wade in the Water” sung during the period of slavery.

Beyoncé sings, “I’ma wade, I’ma wave through the waters / Tell the tide, ‘Don’t move.’”

During a performance of “Freedom” at the 2016 BET Awards, Beyoncé introduced the song with a voice-over of Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech.

"Freedom" also seems to reference the Black Lives Matter movement when she sings, “I’ma riot, I’ma riot through your borders / Call me bulletproof.”

Beyonce paid tribute to the victims of police brutality with an a capella rendition of “Freedom” at a July 2016 concert in Glasgow, According to footage from concertgoers .

During a moment of silence, the “Formation” singer displayed a screen with the names of people who have been killed by police violence. After the moment was over, she performed “Freedom” to a cheering crowd.

Read the lyrics to 'Freedom'

Tryna rain, tryna rain on the thunder

Tell the storm I’m new

I’ma walk, I’ma march on the regular

Painting white flags blue

Lord, forgive me, I’ve been running

Running blind in truth

I’ma rain, I’ma rain on this bitter love

Tell the sweet I’m new

I’m telling these tears, “Go and fall away, fall away,” oh

May the last one burn into flames

Freedom! Freedom! I can’t move

Freedom, cut me loose! Yeah

Freedom! Freedom! Where are you?

‘Cause I need freedom, too!

I break chains all by myself

Won’t let my freedom rot in hell

Hey! I’ma keep running

‘Cause a winner don’t quit on themselves

I’ma wade, I’ma wave through the waters

Tell the tide, “Don’t move”

I’ma riot, I’ma riot through your borders

Call me bulletproof

Lord, forgive me, I’ve been runnin’

Runnin’ blind in truth

I’ma wade, I’ma wave through your shallow love

Tell the deep I’m new

Freedom, cut me loose!

Ten Hail Marys, I meditate for practice

Channel 9 news tell me I’m movin’ backwards

Eight blocks left, death is around the corner

Seven misleadin’ statements ‘bout my persona

Six headlights wavin’ in my direction (Come on)

Five-O askin’ me what’s in my possession

Yeah, I keep runnin’, jump in the aqueducts

Fire hydrants and hazardous

Smoke alarms on the back of us

But mama, don’t cry for me, ride for me

Try for me, live for me

Breathe for me, sing for me

Honestly guidin’ me

I could be more than I gotta be

Stole from me, lied to me, nation hypocrisy

Code on me, drive on me

Wicked, my spirit inspired me, like yeah

Open correctional gates in higher desert (Yeah)

Open our mind as we cast away oppression (Yeah)

Open the streets and watch our beliefs

And when they carve my name inside the concrete

I pray it forever reads

What you want from me?

Is it truth you seek? Oh, father, can you hear me?

Hear me out

Def Leppard, Journey and Steve Miller romp through five hours of rock sing-alongs

Portrait of Melissa Ruggieri

PHILADELPHIA – It’s tough to look at a triple threat lineup of Def Leppard , Journey and the Steve Miller Band and not wonder which rock bands will be filling 40,000-60,000-capacity stadiums in 15 years?

These stalwart behemoths of the ‘70s and ‘80s (and even the ‘60s in Miller’s case), as well as most of their peers such as Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney will be long retired, with no obvious heirs.

Actually, we can probably expect to see Mick Jagger and Keith Richards un-mothballing The Rolling Stones for one more run.

But concurrent with that sad reality of the future is the unfettered joy of the present with this plainly named Summer Stadium Tour.

The trifecta of hitmakers rolled into Citizens Bank Park July 23, the seventh date on a road trip that runs through early September , with a battery of smashes that inspired everyone from middle-aged concessions workers to teenagers clad in vintage rock T-shirts to shout and dance along.

The number of hits among this collective of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers is staggering, and for five brisk hours, fans were presented with thunderous, polished renditions of these well-worn nuggets as well as a few unexpected album cuts.

Here’s how the night unfolded.

Steve Miller Band thanks Eminem with ‘Abracadabra’

The dean of this triple-decker lineup welcomed fans streaming into the stadium with a friendly, “C’mon in!,” and those who arrived in time for his 6 p.m. set were quickly reminded of his extensive hits parade.

If you don’t think you know a Steve Miller song , you would be wrong. So ubiquitous was his blues-rooted rock in the mid-‘70s that it would be impossible not to be familiar with the guitar riff that opens “Rock’n Me,” the smirky slide guitar in “ The Joker ” or the elastic groove of “Swingtown.”

Miller, 80, and his four-piece band offered an invigorating 60 minutes of fingers dancing across the fretboard (“Fly Like an Eagle”), sizzling harmonica (“Living in the U.S.A.”) and funky hi-hat work and handclaps (“Take the Money and Run”).

Before playing the poppiest tune on his resume, 1982’s “ Abracadabra ,” Miller teased it by singing, “Guess who’s back, guess who’s back, guess who’s back?” – a nod to Eminem , who sampled the melody of the track for his recent hit, “ Houdini .”

Miller smiled as thanked to the rapper for using his song, which hit No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 and is now guaranteed to have a next-generation audience.

(Cheap Trick replaces the Steve Miller Band on a handful of tour dates.)

Journey’s Neal Schon is a bona fide guitar hero

By opening with the double punch of “Only the Young” and “Be Good to Yourself,” Journey kicked off their 90-minute set with the fervor usually reserved for closing songs.

But when your catalog is stuffed with soaring anthems, what’s the harm in dribbling out a couple of them early to rouse a crowd?

Singer Arnel Pineda , a member of the band for 16 years, owns his spotlight. He scampered down the three ramps jutting from the stage, ran laps while Journey co-founder/guitarist Neal Schon ripped out an extended solo after “Be Good to Yourself,” leaned into fans with his microphone and hopped into the crowd during “Wheel in the Sky.”

He’s a sparkplug who also happens to possess a colossal set of pipes to comfortably nail these classics originally delivered by the uniquely voiced Steve Perry.

The trio of video screens stationed across the stage afforded prime views of the band digging into their instruments. Drummer Deen Castronovo – who ably handled lead vocals on “Lights” – exhibited how the drum fills in “ Faithfully ” are as important as Jonathan Cain’s lovely piano and Schon’s guitar melody with his tasteful work behind the kit.

Cain, who alternated between guitar and piano/keyboards, also led the crowd in a swoon-a-thon of Journey’s biggest chart hit, 1982’s “ Open Arms ” and, later in the set, uncorked a whoosh of nostalgia with the spidery opening notes of “ Separate Ways .”

But it was impossible not to keep drifting back to Schon , one of the last great stand-in-front-of-the-mirror-air-guitar heroes who showcased his adroitness with unceasing energy. Whether it was the scalding boogie-rock of “Line of Fire,” a song from 1980’s “Departure” that the band has only played about 50 times since the ‘80s, or one of his two stirring solos, Schon captivated.

Closing out their performance with the synth-tastic “Separate Ways,” “ Any Way You Want It ” and yes, the ubiquitous “ Don’t Stop Believin’ ,” Journey proved the undiminished muscularity of these fist pumpers.

And if you’re not moved, even a little, by the sight and sound of nearly 40,000 people unified for four minutes while screaming along to “Don’t Stop …,” well, we’re very sorry about the ice in your veins.

Def Leppard romps through visual and sonic feast

In an interview with USA TODAY before the tour kickoff, guitarist Phil Collen said Def Leppard, always dutiful about stage presentation, had an invigorated production.

He did not lie.

Banks of lights were stacked behind the stage, a kaleidoscope of colors beamed from high above, the edges of the two video screens flanking the stage were continuously illuminated – all a vibrant swirl to complement the band’s supple rock.

In a combination of sequins, spandex, scarves and, in the case of the chest-baring Collen , pure sinew, Def Leppard romped through 90 minutes of timeless material speckled with a bit of current work.

The twin turbo guitar power of Collen and Vivian Campbell coupled with a cascade of harmonies led by bassist Rick Savage to launch “Rocket,” while singer Joe Elliott , silver mane blowing, strutted the stage while unwrapping “Foolin’.”

After sating fans with a trio of hits – “ Animal ,” “Love Bites,” and, with Campbell donning his sunglasses at night as he tossed out the opening riff, “Armageddon It”– Def Leppard dovetailed into “ Just Like ’73 ,” their new stomp-rocker that pays homage to idols such as Marc Bolan and David Bowie and sounds constructed for exactly this setting.

They zagged into “Comin’ Under Fire,” a track from 1983’s breakthrough “ Pyromania ” that they’re playing for the first time on this tour, as well as “Die Hard the Hunter,” another “Pyromania” album cut resurrected a couple of years ago.

Red lighting streaked the stage as Collen and Campbell crisscrossed each other in a gentlemanly guitar duel before the band ceded the spotlight to Elliott for an acoustic fan-fueled rendition of “Two Steps Behind.”

The other four members returned for more Def Leppard unplugged, leaning into “This Guitar,” a sweet song recorded with noted fan Alison Krauss for 2022’s “ Diamond Star Halos ” album. Elliott dedicated the track to British blues maestro John Mayall , who died July 22, and explained his importance to the puzzled audience.

“Without John Mayall there would be no Rolling Stones and without the Rolling Stones there would be no Def Leppard,” he said.

The band utilized the underappreciated instrumental guitar-gasm “Switch 625” to swing back into fist-pumping ecstasy with “Rock of Ages,” which paired with an awe-inspiring solo from the inimitable Rick Allen.

The closing selections of the sublime “ Hysteria ,” one of the band’s musical masterpieces, and the silly yet undeniably fun “ Pour Some Sugar on Me ” showcased the dichotomy of Def Leppard and their chameleonic songwriting.

Long live rock 'n' roll, indeed.

Taylor Swift's surprise songs from Night 2 of the Eras Tour in Hamburg, including two Red (Taylor's Version) vault tracks

T aylor Swift's Eras Tour continued its international journey on Wednesday night in Germany (afternoon in the United States) with the second of two shows in Hamburg. The now 14-time Grammy winner will be touring almost non-stop for the entire year, and at each show she adds two "surprise songs" to her 44-song, three hour plus set list.

For the second night in Hamburg, Swift continued the double mashups that she loves so much. On guitar, she played "The Last Great American Dynasty" from Folklore combined with "Run" from Red (Taylor's Version). On piano, Swift went with a mashup of "Nothing New" from Red (Taylor's Version) and "Dear Reader" from Midnights.

Next up, Swift heads to Munich for two shows starting Saturday, July 27.

Dave Bayley of Glass Animals reflects on struggles that came after "Heat Waves" success, creative journey for new album

By Anthony Mason , Analisa Novak

July 19, 2024 / 10:12 AM EDT / CBS News

Dave Bayley, lead singer of Glass Animals, recently walked down Beck Road in East London, a place filled with memories. It was there, during the peak of the pandemic, that Bayley filmed the music video for the band's hit song "Heat Waves."

Neighbors in lockdown participated by filming from their windows, helping to create a video that now boasts over 720 million views on YouTube and more than 3 billion streams on Spotify.

"It's a sweet little street," Bayley said.

The success of "Heat Waves" catapulted Glass Animals—Bayley, Joe Seaward, Edmund Irwin-Singer and Drew MacFarlane—into mainstream success.

"It was bonkers," said Bayley. "You're kind of clinging to the bottom of the rocket and it's taken you right up into space."

Fame brought awards, opportunities and a GRAMMY nomination, but Bayley said he struggled with success.

"I think I was trying to do so much that I stopped doing a lot of the things that grounded me," he said. "I had a big existential crisis."

Last year, Bayley secluded himself in a hilltop Airbnb in Los Angeles. He began to write extensively, letting inspiration take hold.

"I started kind of writing my way out of this hole," Bayley said.

He described it as "a vomit of information and words and melodies and chords."

From this, a new album about love and human connection emerged, set against a space theme. The new album, "I Love You So F***ing Much," is out now.

In his London studio, Bayley assembled a wall of synthesizers for the new record. He aimed to create a sound similar to a '70s space movie.

In a visit to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, Bayley's bandmates said there were some nerves about how to follow up the success of "Heat Waves."

But once Bayley showed the rest of the group his galactic songs, Seaward said that fear vanished.

"How do you follow something like that? But that question was completely out the window as soon as we started," said Seaward.

Glass Animals is set to embark on a massive 44-date world tour called Human Music Group Sensations Glass Animals: TOUR OF EARTH. Starting in August in the U.S., the tour will take the band across North America, Europe, the UK, and Australia. They will be headlining the biggest venues of their career, including iconic locations like Madison Square Garden in New York and The O2 in London.

Bayley said the new album is deeply personal, which is something he previously struggled to crack with a cosmic-themed album.

"Every time I tried to do a space album, it never felt human," Bayley said. "It felt cold."

On the new Glass Animals album, Bayley found a way to bring humanity, connection, love, and heartbreak into a intergalactic setting. Though he finally got his space-themed record, Bayley said the vulnerability of it, especially in the shadow of "Heat Waves," brings some anxiety.

"It's like, parts of it are quite scary to me," he said. "It's like walking out naked with all your secrets written on your body, on your skin."

The willingness to get personal paid off. Seaward said from the moment he heard the songs for the first time, he could see clearly what was in store for Glass Animals' next chapter.

"It's kind of like Christmas Eve when Dave comes in and plays us songs. It's this moment where you're like … the next two or three years of my life is sort of unfolding before my eyes," Seaward said. "Luckily, so far they've always been incredibly exciting. But you kind of get this feeling like, wow."

Harris walks out to Beyoncé’s 'Freedom' in her 1st appearance as a presidential candidate

Vice President Harris gets ready to speak to campaign staff at her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Del., on Monday. Harris won the crucial backing of Democratic heavyweight Nancy Pelosi to lead the party against former President Donald Trump in November after President Biden's stunning exit from the 2024 race. As the endorsements stacked up, the 59-year-old Harris made her first public appearance since Biden's announcement in a ceremony at the White House, where she warmly praised the outgoing president's "unmatched" achievements. Vice President Kamala Harris made a statement in song with her first official public appearance as a presidential candidate: On Monday, just one day after President Biden bowed out of the race and endorsed her, Harris’ entrance at her Delaware campaign headquarters was scored by “Freedom,” Beyoncé ’s 2016 anthem featuring Kendrick Lamar from the artist’s sixth studio album, Lemonade .

President Biden seemed to lose his train of thought and badly stumbled during a debate with former President Donald Trump on June 27, sparking cries to drop out of the race.

Biden drops out of 2024 reelection race, endorses Harris for nominee

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks at her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Del., on Monday.

Harris says, as a former prosecutor, 'I know Donald Trump's type'

According to source confirmation from CNN, as soon as Harris’ team reached out with the request to play the track on the campaign trail, Beyoncé’s representatives immediately approved the use of the Grammy-winning anthem, a record turnaround considering the superstar’s normally strict clearance policies.

“Freedom” marches under the banner of Black resilience and strength, playing on the history of civil rights activism in the United States with Bey singing, “I break chains all by myself / Won't let my freedom rot in hell / Hey! I'ma keep running cause a winner don't quit on themselves” to close out the guttural chorus. Beyoncé and Lamar, the featured guest on the track, famously delivered a rare and electrifying performance of the song at the 2016 BET Awards. As Harris, an avid Beyoncé fan, begins her campaigning sprint with just four months until Election Day, she tied the themes to the ethos of her political run: “In this election, we know we each face a question: What kind of country do we want to live in?” she said during the headquarters speech. “A country of freedom, compassion and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear and hate?”

Queen Bey and the VP have maintained a close relationship since Harris took public office. Harris was in attendance for Beyoncé’s record-breaking Renaissance World Tour in 2023, a night out worth over $1,500 per ticket that was later revealed to be a personal gift from Beyoncé herself. Knowles-Carter and her husband, Jay-Z , have been longtime supporters of figures on the Democratic ticket. In 2016, Bey performed at a rally for then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and in 2013 and 2009, she was called on by then-President Barack Obama to perform at his presidential inauguration and inauguration ball, respectively.

In its first few days, Harris’ presidential bid has been the topic of conversation across all corners of the internet, with Millennials and Gen Zers taking the opportunity to create fancams of the politician, using tracks by Beyoncé, Charli XCX and Taylor Swift as soundtracks. Over the weekend, Charli XCX posted “Kamala IS brat” to X; now, with Beyoncé’s added support, this could kick start a trend of popular musicians backing the Democratic candidate.
