The 2024 BMW X2 is a vehicle with an interesting mission; it wants to blend coupe styling with SUV practicality and act as an entryway into the world of BMW M - but it also isn't allowed to step on the toes of its larger siblings higher up in the lineup. Why upgrade to an X4 if the cheaper and only slightly smaller X2 has many similar features - and actually has more cargo space?

BMW introduced the X2 back in 2017 as a more stylish variant of its entry-level X1, similar to what the X4 is to the X3 and the X6 is to the X5. This second-generation model seeks to pick up where the last one left off, improving on customer demands for sharper styling and more interior space.

The result is a larger X2, both outside and in, meaning the gap in practicality between it and the X1 has shrunk. Power comes from a turbocharged four-cylinder producing 241 horsepower in xDrive28i guise or 312 hp in the M35i variant. CarBuzz had a chance to sample the latter M Performance model on rainy Portuguese roads, where we learned that the new X2 solves many problems from the old model while creating others.

Exterior: Honey, I Shrunk The XM

BMW needed a styling win after controversies with the 7 Series and XM , and we think they got it right here. Not everyone will dig the X2's coupe-like rear end, but the boxy lines and sharp edges create what we'd call an attractive little crossover. The kidney grille isn't overly massive and it looks even cooler with the optional illumination. Overall, we think the X2 looks like a baby XM that's more palatable for a mainstream audience.

Of course, that restraint goes out the window when the X2 is finished in BMW Individual Frozen Tampa Bay Metallic paint, a new matte green that looks absolutely wild in person. If you don't want to pony up for this custom paint, the X2 offers some other interesting hues such as Portimao Blue Metallic, Cape York Green Metallic, Utah Orange Metallic, Vegas Red Metallic, and plenty of muted options like Alpine White and Jet Black.

Wheel sizes range from 19 inches up to 21 inches, and as you'll see later, we highly recommend getting the smallest ones. Our tester wore unique 20-inch M V-spoke wheels that looked great, but had a negative impact on ride quality.

Interior: More Premium, Fewer Buttons

Hop out of a previous-generation X2 into the new car, and it becomes clear that BMW's interior design language has changed dramatically in the past two years. Bye-bye physical buttons and knobs, hello touch controls! Even the famous iDrive rotating controller is nowhere to be found. BMW says its latest iDrive 9 infotainment offers a QuickSelect interface that helps drivers quickly find what they need on the touchscreen.

In our experience, simple tasks like adjusting the fan speed or changing a drive mode requires too much driver attention - which is worrying when you are driving on wet roads in an unfamiliar country. BMW also says it expects customers to talk to the system by saying "Hey, BMW." The controls work well, but it's a bit awkward to cut your passenger off mid-sentence or interrupt your music to speak to your car just to get things done.

Though some buyers will miss the buttons, others will enjoy what is a more open-feeling and spacious cabin. The center console has a lot more space, including a wireless charger with a lap bar to hold your phone in place. The few remaining buttons live on a central armrest, putting them within reach and the rest of the cabin is packed with features .

BMW wrapped the seats in its new Veganza imitation leather, which feels like the real stuff and comes in colors like Black, Mocha, Red/Black, Atlas Grey/Smoke White, and Oyster. There is also an Alcantara option with blue stitching that looks sporty. Our tester came with the optional M Sport seats for $750, which aren't available on the base model (although more basic sport seats are, for $400). The M Sport items look cooler than the regular seats, but weren't very comfortable after a few hours of driving. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are optional for just $550, but ventilated seats require moving up the BMW model ladder.

Practicality: A Better SUV

While the previous X2 was smaller and less practical than the X1 on which it was based, this second generation grows in significant ways. For starters, it's more than seven inches longer than the outgoing generation a wheelbase that has grown by almost an inch.

In fact, the X2 is now almost two and a half inches longer overall than the X1. Without having the exact measurements, rear seat leg and headroom is improved over the old model, and we didn't bang our heads getting into the back seat as we did in the previous model.

It's a similar story in the trunk, where we do have the official figures. There's 25.3 cubic feet behind the second row, which is a healthy increase from 21.6 cubes in the old X2. With the seats folded, the new X2 holds 51.7 cubic feet, up from 50.1 in the previous generation. For comparison, the X1 holds 25.7 and 46.9 cubic feet, so the X2 is closer than before in terms of storage space with the seats up, and a better deal when you fold those down.

Performance: A Lot With A Little

As before, the X2 comes powered by a single 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine available in two states of tune. Europe also gets an electric iX2 , but it will not be sold stateside. The entry-level xDrive28i model sends 241 hp and 295 lb-ft out to all four wheels, a healthy increase over the outgoing model's 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to a quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, even the slowest X2 hits 60 mph in a scant 6.2 seconds.

The M35i xDrive dials things up several notches with 312 hp and 295 lb-ft, reducing the 0-60 time down to 5.2 seconds. This trim also adds an "M-specific exhaust" and adaptive M suspension. We put the M-specific exhaust in quotations marks because although the M35i has a throatier sound with pops and crackles, those noises actually come from the speakers, not the exhaust. Fake exhaust amplification through the speakers is nothing new, but there was something disconcerting about hearing the cracks and pops being simulated.

Driving Impressions: More Hot Hatchy

When BMW first began building front-wheel-drive platform vehicles like the X1, X2, and 2 Series Gran Coupe , traditional enthusiasts lost their minds about the brand diluting itself. We had a more positive outlook on the situation, hoping BMW might build cars that feel like a more luxurious Volkswagen Golf GTI or R. Sadly, the previous X2 wasn't that; it rode firmly, but the steering felt dead. Sure, the X2 was relatively quick in a straight line, but it wasn't anything close to an M car.

This new X2 fixes a lot of what we disliked from the last one. The steering is far more precise without getting much heavier, meaning it now feels more like a hot hatchback than ever before. Fake noise aside, the M35i powertrain is punchy unless you happen to catch it in a high cruising gear. Pulling the left paddle shifter activates a boost mode that triggers the lowest available gear and unleashes max power for a few seconds - a useful feature for urgent passing situations. Though the DCT rips off shifts quickly, there seems to be a delay between pulling the paddle and the gear change. We prefer leaving the transmission in automatic mode where it could manage itself with more grace.

In moving closer to a hot hatch formula, BMW stiffened the ride to the point where it's uncomfortable. We drove it over some Portuguese streets with rougher surfaces, and the M adaptive suspension bounced us all over the place. If you live somewhere with smooth roads, it should be ok, but the X2 is not a soft vehicle.

Pricing & Verdict: Downmarket Luxury

Pricing for the 2024 X2 xDrive28i starts at $42,000 (excluding $995 for destination). That's a substantial increase over the 2023 base model's $36,600 MSRP, but keep in mind that wasn't for AWD and xDrive now comes standard, so the price difference is smaller than it appears on paper. Stepping up to the M35i brings the price to $51,400, which is more than we'd want to spend for an 'entry-level' BMW. The performance is there, but we believe the xDrive28i will be plenty for most drivers. Unlike the X4 or the X6, the X2 only commands a small premium over the X1. It only costs $1,500 more than a comparable X1, which is a price premium that can be justified for the unique styling and practicality advantages.

In the US market, the only direct competition to the BMW X2 is the Mercedes-Benz GLA and its AMG GLA 35 counterpart. The Mercedes is slightly cheaper, but it's also smaller and the interior feels less premium than the BMW. If you desire a combination of coupe-like styling but still need a spacious SUV, the X2 seems like a better option than the GLA. But if you want to save some money and still get a BMW-built crossover that's fun to drive, the Mini Countryman should be on your radar.

BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer review

BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer

  • Good to drive
  • Spacious cabin
  • Dull styling
  • M Sport rides firmly

The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is a bigger, more practical version of the 2 Series Active Tourer MPV , adding an extra row of seats to what was already a very handy family car. The seven-seater benefits from a strong line-up of petrol and diesel engines that offer good levels of fuel efficiency and performance, while the badge on the front adds the kind of desirability rivals like the Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer and Renault Grand Scenic struggle to match. This comes at a price though, as these alternatives are much cheaper and represent better value for money.

If you don’t want to give up on the idea of having a car that’s fun to drive, but you need something that’s big enough to fill the needs of a growing family, then the 2 Series Gran Tourer fits the bill perfectly.

About the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer

Since the introduction of the 2 Series Gran Tourer, BMW really can claim to offer a car for every occasion. Not happy with the five-seat Active Tourer , BMW introduced the seven-seat Gran Tourer at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, with sales starting just a few months later.

Aimed at people who think a Renault Grand Scenic , Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer or even a Volkswagen Touran is too mainstream, the 2 GT promises to be a car they not only need but one they actively desire.

Best seven-seater cars - header image

However, in order to make a seven-seater compact, you first need a front-wheel-drive platform – and only relatively recently has BMW been brave enough to break with its rear-drive traditions. By using the MINI hatchback’s architecture, BMW is able to introduce a new range of compact cars giving it access to previously untapped segments. Four trims – SE, Sport, Luxury and M Sport – make up the range.

bmw x2 gran tour

Engines range from the basic three-cylinder 216d diesel to the range-topping 220d with four-wheel drive. In between the two you’ll find a 218i and 220i petrol, as well as a 218d diesel.

The two more powerful diesels make up the bulk of sales, though it’s the lesser 216d that boast the most impressive fuel economy and emissions. Six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearboxes are on offer across the range. While there’s a plug-in hybrid version of the 2 Series Active Tourer, there’s no such option on the seven-seat Gran Tourer.

BMW X2 review

BMW X2 front

Pleasing interior, connectivity, technology

Looks ugly, ho-hum driving experience, doesn’t feel as high quality as you’d expect

What is it?

Some numbers to begin with: 2023 was BMW’s most successful year ever, with 2.25m cars sold globally. This is surely due in part to its sprawling line-up, whose tendrils now spread in every direction (though sadly not into supercar territory).

Still, what it lacks at the oxygen-thin end of the market it gains in the more accessible sphere. Witness the rise of the 2 Series , and the crossover X2 in particular. Since its arrival a few years ago more than 390,000 have been sold, and the new one aims to double down on that success.

Four models will be available in the UK, two combustion, two fully electric. The entry-level model is the X2 sDrive20i M Sport, which costs £40,515, while the more powerful, 296bhp M35i is £49,340. The US and other selected markets get 314bhp for some reason.

As ever, the electric models carry a premium. The iX2 xDrive30 starts at £51,615, the iX2 xDrive30 M Sport costing £57,445. Other European markets have a diesel option that the UK is denied. Rivals include the Audi Q3 Sportback , Mercedes GLA , Range Rover Evoque , and the excellent Cupra Formentor .

It’s not a looker, is it?

The new X2 and iX2 will be made side-by-side in BMW’s factory in Regensburg, a state-of-the-art, sustainable facility that uses AI-enabled robots.

We wonder if AI was involved in the new X2’s creative execution, while BMW’s design A-list were focused on the upcoming Neue Klasse cars. They promise to be crisp, cohesive and modern looking cars, but X2 and iX2 are sadly ill-proportioned and over-bodied, even on 21in alloys.

BMW says the upright grille and flowing coupe roofline are signatures of its sport activity cars, but the net result looks a bit off from pretty much every angle. The front and rear wheelarches are flared, and there’s an indent beneath the rear window to create a bit of extra heft and shoulder muscle. There’s a clear visual throughline to the X4 and X6 , which is fine until you remember that neither are canonical BMWs.

Perhaps the concept of a four-door quasi-off road coupe crossover is simply too spurious to work, though the Cupra Formentor shows that it can be done. Clearly cars like the X2 are popular. But there’s something dishonest about the format. It’s marketing-led, basically.

Hmm, you really don’t like it, do you? Are there any redeeming features?

Graphic elements include the ‘double icon’ head- and tail-lights, with LEDs as standard. The double kidney grille is unmissable, especially if you plump for the illuminated Iconic Glow version.

It’s slippery though, touting a drag coefficient of 0.27 (an impressive 0.25 for the iX2). Combustion X2s have an active air flap in the kidney grille and a lower intake with air curtains on either side, while the exterior mirrors and flush-fitting door handles all promote aero efficiency. The iX2’s kidney grille is closed off. The M35i is the only model with visible exhaust tail-pipes; four of ‘em.

READ MORE Behold the new, embiggened BMW X2 and all-electric iX2

Note also that the X2 can be had in a selection of lysergic colour schemes. Our M35i was in a violent shade of green. Rebellious, yes, but also horrible. Inevitably, it’s also bigger. Well, no car company ever crows about making a car smaller, does it?

The new X2 is 4,554mm long, 194mm more than the outgoing car, and also taller and wider. BMW claims greater efficiency in its construction and manufacture, though. Hot-stamped steels and aluminium are used in the safety cell.

Our choice from the range

BMW X2 review

What's the verdict?

The new X2 is an odd one. Everything’s there on paper but the M35i we drove stubbornly failed to excite us. We could live with the questionable looks if the dynamics were fully up to scratch, but honestly it feels like a car BMW didn’t expend a huge amount of time or love on. It seems impossible to believe that a company with its track record could fumble the ball, but nobody’s perfect. The iX2 is better and benefits from BMW’s rapidly growing, ever-evolving electric ecosystem. But it’s not massively exciting either. A rare mis-step, all in all.

The 2024 X2 is a practical family SUV with a smart interior and tidy handling

Introduction, what car says....

Whether it’s for the Brit Awards or the Oscars, picking out a bold costume is a great way to get yourself noticed – and that seems to be the approach taken by the new BMW X2 .

With its chunky SUV body mixed with a sleek coupé-like roof and large front grille, the X2 refuses to be lost in the sea of family SUVs. True, it doesn’t have the curious silhouette of Sam Smith’s inflatable latex suit, but it’s certainly striking enough to have people doing a double take.

BMW’s first-generation X2 ended up looking more like a jacked-up hatchback and struggled to make a memorable impression. It was also shorter than the BMW X1 so practicality took a small hit.

This time round, the second-generation X2 mimics the shape of the bigger BMW X4 and BMW X6  while growing in size (it’s 54mm longer than the X1) so the rest of the family can fit in without resenting the buyer’s purchase decision.

Read on to find out whether the latest BMW X2 is good enough to beat other sleek-styled SUVs, such as the  Audi Q3 Sportback , Cupra Formentor and Range Rover Evoque ...

"The X2 has decent interior and boot space for an SUV of its size and shape. The engines are punchy, too. Ride comfort would benefit from softer, more compliant suspension, though." –  Steve Huntingford, Editor

Performance & drive

What it’s like to drive, and how quiet it is.

The BMW X2 offers a choice of two petrol engines, both of which come with a seven-speed automatic gearbox .

The entry-level sDrive20i produces 168bhp from its 1.5-litre engine and officially takes 8.3 seconds to get from 0-62mph. Power is sent via the front wheels and you get mild-hybrid assistance to help bolster performance and fuel economy.

If you fancy more punch and four-wheel drive, there's the 296bhp M35i, with an official 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds. The power delivery is smooth and the automatic gearbox changes gears in a slick manner, but it doesn’t feel as quick as the performance figures suggest. The engine doesn’t rev particularly quickly, giving the sensation it’s having to haul a heavier car.

Note that the second-generation X2 is not available as a plug-in hybrid ( PHEV ).

Adaptive suspension is standard on all X2s, but you can’t adjust the softness of it. The M35i we’ve tested so far (with 20in wheels) is so firm that it struggles to settle down at low speeds, even on roads that appear to be relatively smooth. Meanwhile, going over speed bumps will see occupants thrown upwards in their seats.

BMW X2 image

We’ll reserve judgement on the sDrive20i’s ride comfort until we’ve tried it.

The M35i is better on a twisty country road. The well-weighted steering allows you to accurately place the X2 on the road, and its quick responses make threading the car through corners effortless. With high grip levels and minimal body lean, the driver quickly builds up their confidence.

We’d stop short of calling it fun to drive, though. The M35i struggles to contain vertical body movement over undulating roads. A Mini Countryman John Cooper Works (which uses the same engine and basic underpinnings as the M35i) trades some firmness for a bit less body control, and the Cupra Formentor has a better balance of comfort and grip, although its steering feels less direct than the X2’s.

The X2 has a Sport driving mode, which pipes an augmented engine note through the speakers. It sounds rather unconvincing and is loud enough to mask any sound that may be heard from the quad exhausts. At least you have the option of turning off the sounds when you or your passengers are not in the mood.

The thump from the tyres is something you can’t avoid though, along with a moderate level of road noise at motorway speeds – although out test car’s acoustic side windows reduced wind noise to a minimum. (They're available as part of the optional Technology Pack).

To read about the fully electric version of the X2, see our BMW iX2 review.

"The X2 is sharp to drive by class standards, but the X2, even the M35i version, fails to entertain at a level the best sports SUVs achieve." –  Neil Winn, Deputy Reviews Editor

Weaknesses Stiff ride on M35i; some road noise

The interior layout, fit and finish

You don’t get a truly commanding view of the road in the BMW X2, but the driving position is fundamentally sound.

The steering wheel has lots of adjustment for both reach and rake, and you can move the seat in several planes. Electric adjustment (including for the lumbar support) is an option on all trim levels.

Sports front seats standard on all versions provide plenty of side support and come with grippy suede-like material to hold you in place when cornering.

You don’t have as clear a view over the dashboard and bonnet in the X2 as in the Mini Countryman but forward visibility is still pretty good, helped by relatively thin windscreen pillars.

However, with small side windows, a narrow rear windscreen and chunky rear pillars, the view over your shoulder and out the rear is compromised. Thankfully, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera are standard on all models, while a 360-degree camera is available as an option.

The X2 shares the same dashboard as the BMW X1 and it’s slightly frustrating that there are no physical buttons to operate the climate control system, as there are in the Audi Q3 . Fortunately, you can adjust the stereo volume and select your drive modes with physical controls on the lower centre console, beside the gear selector.

The driver gets a 10.3in digital instrument panel with a range of layout options, and there's a 10.7in infotainment touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard.

The infotainment operating system is packed full of features, including sat-nav , Android Auto and Apple CarPlay , and apps that allow you to stream video or play arcade games with your phone as a controller.

It responds quickly to inputs and a row of touch-sensitive shortcut keys running down the side of the screen takes you directly to the most important functions. Unlike earlier versions of the BMW software, the main app screen is now organised into categories, so it’s a little easier to find what you are looking for.

A 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is standard on the M35i and optional with M Sport trim on the sDrive20i.

The M35i comes with an added slice of suede-like material on the dashboard ahead of the front passenger, but the X2 otherwise offers the same level of build quality and material plushness as the BMW X1 .

That puts it up there with the better efforts in the family SUV class, and while there are plenty of plastics, they at least feel high quality and it feels more upmarket than the Audi Q3’s. Even so, a Range Rover Evoque feels more luxurious inside.

"It’s a shame the X2 doesn’t offer the instinctive-to-use rotary infotainment controller you’ll find in pricier BMWs." –  Will Nightingale, Reviews Editor

Strengths  M35i’s supportive front seats; infotainment system is quick to respond and packed with features

Weaknesses Rear visibility could be better

BMW X2 M35i boot open

Passenger & boot space

How it copes with people and clutter.

Although the X2 has a lower roof than the BMW X1  there’s still enough head room for 6ft adults. There’s plenty of leg and elbow room too, so it doesn’t feel confined.

There’s a pair of cupholders up front that are deep enough to hold a 500ml bottle each, while the wireless charging tray for a phone (when fitted) has a spring-loaded clip to hold it in place. The lidded centre armrest is quite shallow (and hinged to only open up for easy access to the driver), but there is a larger storage tray beneath it on a lower tier.

Rear-seat passengers will most appreciate the larger dimensions over the previous-generation X2. True, the amount of head room available isn’t as generous as in an X1 or Mini Countryman  but a 6ft occupant will have just enough clearance for their head – which is better than having it buried into the roof lining as you would in an Audi Q3 Sportback .

There’s plenty of leg room and space for feet under the front seats to stretch out, making it slightly more accommodating than the electric version – the BMW iX2 – with its raised floor (to accommodate the battery).

You can recline the backrest to boost comfort, although a middle occupant won’t want to spend too much time back here, due to a big hump in the floor robbing them of foot space. The  Cupra Formentor has a better balance of head and leg room overall, but there’s more rear leg room in the X2 than there is in a Range Rover Evoque .

With boot space increasing by 90 litres over its predecessor (with the rear seats up) the X2 has a 560-litre capacity. It should have little trouble swallowing a large buggy or enough luggage for a weekend away.

On paper, that’s a little more than what you get in an Audi Q3 Sportback and the BMW X1, and far more than is offered in the Cupra Formentor.

The boot's load area is a usefully square shape and has a couple of small storage areas on the side. There’s a small load lip to lift items over and while the height of the boot floor is fixed, there is at least a huge storage area underneath that’s almost the same length and width.

All X2s have a powered tailgate that makes life that bit easier. The optional Technology Pack adds a sensor below the bumper so you can open and close the boot by sweeping your foot.

Like the Audi Q3 Sportback, the X2 comes with a 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench as standard, which makes it easier to carry long loads and still fit four people more comfortably than a 60/40 format. You can’t fold the rear backrest from inside the boot, though – the release catches are mounted on the seats.

"Being able to recline the rear seatbacks is always a plus in this kind of vehicle, especially when you're off on the family holiday and have a long journey ahead," –   Claire Evans, Consumer Editor

Weaknesses Rivals still offer more rear head room

Buying & owning

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is.

On a model-for-model basis, the X2 costs a little more than an equivalent BMW X1 . The price difference is slightly greater when you compare an entry-level sDrive20 M Sport with a similarly powerful Audi Q3 Sportback S line 1.5 TFSI, but you are paying for a bit more performance, space and a slightly fresher interior in the X2.

With an official figure of 48.7mpg, the X2 sDrive20 is also slightly more economical on fuel and its CO2 output of 131g/km is lower than the Q3 1.5 TFSI, helping to reduce running costs and BIK tax  for company car users.

If you’re thinking of buying one outright, it’s worth noting that the X2 loses value more quickly than other premium rivals, including the Audi Q3 Sportback and closely-related Mini Countryman . You can check the latest prices by searching our new BMW deals pages .

Choosing a trim level couldn’t be easier, with just the entry-level M Sport and the high performance M35i model available.

Entry-level M Sport trim is well equipped, with 19in alloy wheels, two- zone climate control, cruise control, automatic windscreen wipers, ambient lighting and heated front seats with part-leather upholstery.

Individual options include a panoramic sunroof and a heated steering wheel, while the Technology Package brings adaptive LED headlights, keyless entry, wireless phone-charging and auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

The M35i adds larger 20in alloy wheels, a light surround for the front grille, black exterior highlights, a slightly larger boot spoiler and blue brake calipers.

The X2 is too new to feature in the 2023  What Car? Reliability Survey  but BMW finished 12th out of 32 manufacturers in the league table. That was above Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes, but a fair way below Lexus (which came top) and Mini, in third place.

BMW’s three-year/unlimited-mileage warranty also edges ahead of the three-year/60,000-mile warranties offered by some rivals, including Audi and Volvo.

The X2 is yet to be tested by safety experts Euro NCAP , although all versions come with automatic emergency braking ( AEB ) and a tyre-pressure monitoring system. The optional Driving Assistant pack adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control and traffic-sign recognition is part of the pricier Driving Assistant Plus pack.

"While having just the two trim levels means you're unlikely to be overwhelmed by choice, a trim that has a greater focus on comfort rather than sportiness would add another dimension to the X2." –  Dan Jones, Reviewer
