There is absolutely no doubt South Africa is blessed with spectacular natural beauty, a fantastic climate and diversely interesting regions with diverse cultures. To say that South Africa is a virtual paradise is a true statement. The country geographically consists of an unspoiled coastline stretching for 2800 kilometres/1740 miles, dramatic mountains and escarpments, extensive bushveld, subtropical forest and outstanding wetlands. Although a comparatively large country, South Africa is easy to get around due to its excellent air and rail services.

Pat 1 review a week ago NEW I recently traveled to Ireland with my sister on a Thompson organized trip. Thankfully, we took out the suggested trip insurance because on day 1, a medical emergency required us to remain in town while the tour continued on. Eileen's attention to detail was so helpful and definitely eased our minds. She rebooked hotels, arranged local transportation, rebooked our flights and ensured we received the necessary airport assistance in Ireland and in the US. No hesitation to recommend Eileen and Thompson for your travel needs . *****
Lisa 5 reviews·10 photos 8 months ago We just returned from California to see Penn State play and win in the Rose Bowl! Eileen and her staff were top-notch! Enjoyed the most beautiful stay, and our transport was via luxury buses! Don’t hesitate to book with her-you won’t be disappointed! *****
Angela 1 review 9 months agoJust got back from a fabulous trip in NYC! Eileen from Thompson Travel did a fantastic job putting it all together for us. The hotel she chose was beautiful, well appointed, and located right in the middle of everything! We felt comfortable and safe! Eileen took great care to take care of us going way above and beyond the norm! Our flights were perfect with no airport drama that is so common these days! Highly recommend Thompson Travel! *****
Jack 2 reviews a year ago Recently returned from a trip to England, Scotland, and Wales with Thompson Tours....our second trip to Europe with Eileen. My wife and I had a great time. The accommodations were First Class...just beautiful. The included meals were great. Eileen selected restaurants where we could experience local delicacies...including haggis. Also had alot of fun visiting several pubs...got to drink a few pints with the townspeople who were welcoming and friendly to American visitors. The tours that Eileen arranged were well planned and extremely interesting...my favorite being the visit to Winston Churchill's War Rooms. Several of the tours included local guides who were very knowledgeable and showed us things we never would have been able to find on our own. One of the guides taught us how to use the London train system...perfect for free time and independent exploration. Eileen was actually with us on the trip. I got to witness and appreciate just how hard she works to make sure everything goes smoothly, and everyone has a great time. Will be booking many more adventures with Thompson Tours in the future. *****
Barbara 1 review a year agoJust returned from the National Parks tour out west. We saw a lot of sights which was exactly what we wanted. There were only 25 people on the full size bus which was great for spreading out. Would have helped if maybe there were videos about the sights to make the ride more enjoyable. The only accommodation I had trouble with was the ski resort. Seemed like it was way out of the way and not the best place for “senior citizens “. A couple of restaurants were questionable for a choice of dinner. Had better leftovers at home. I would travel with Thompson again mostly for Ellen Toole. She was a hoot and kept us informed and entertained. ****
Just returned from Thompson's tour of Iceland. Everything on the tour went smoothly because of Ellen's checking on the hotel and meal arrangements, etc. Thank you to George too with lifting suitcases and helping with the details and for his reassurance that all was going well. I also appreciated that this was a small group of very nice, helpful people. Thanks especially for help at the waterfalls and the glacier! Iceland is a beautiful country and we experienced many waterfalls, glacier hiking (!), and other geological wonders unique to Iceland.(ie hot springs). Thanks to the planning for the trip by Thompson tours, we stayed in very nice Icelandic hotels, had opportunities to get to know each other and learn much more about Iceland. Kudos to Dylan our guide for all of the interesting facts and stories about the Icelandic culture, history and geology. I would highly recommend this tour. - definitely a bargain!! *****

- In summer, Europe’s b eaches are packed with people who flock here from around the world to enjoy the atmosphere, from basking in the sun on the chic French Riviera to island hopping in Greece .

Whether you visit for a handful of days or spend a few glorious weeks soaking up the sun or exploring, holidays in Europe are as laidback or exciting as you wish them to be. Take a look at our available packages and let's start planning!
Know before you go...
What must i pack.
- The weather in Europe can be extremely varied according to the season you’re travelling and the country you’re visiting, so always check the weather forecast.
- Your summer packing list should include lightweight clothing with items that can be layered, beachwear (if you're heading to the coast), a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes.
- Winter in Europe is a cold (often snowy) affair, and you will need to pack the appropriate weatherproof items.
- Be sure to pack comfortable clothing for the times you will spend in transit, whether you are travelling by plane or by coach.
- For flights and public transport, be sure to have hand sanitiser handy. Don't forget a mini first aid kit and your regular prescription medication.
- Camera (or just use your phone) and charger. Some noise-cancelling earphones will come in handy too
- Bring along a European travel adaptor.
Getting there & getting around
- There are frequent flights from South Africa to all major European destination s.
- You can travel between European countries by plane, train or hiring a car .
- As a whole, the public transport in most European cities is excellent and typically includes taxis, the underground, buses, trains and where relevant, ferries .
- Smaller towns and villages in outlying areas throughout the continent may have less sophisticated transport infrastructure – it depends where you are going.
Language & phrases
- There are 24 official languages in Europe.
- English is the most commonly spoken language, followed by French, German and Spanish.
- Learning a few phrases in the language of the country you're visiting will be warmly received by locals.
What can I do to be a responsible traveller?
- Water is scarce throughout some parts of Europe, most notably on the islands. Be mindful of your water usage – keep your showers short and re-use the towels in your hotel room.
- Wherever possible, promote community-based tourism by buying local food and souvenirs and supporting local artisans .
- Be mindful of your waste, especially on the islands. Waste disposal is a costly affair for local businesses, so be sure to support their efforts by not bringing with you items that are heavily packaged or single-use plastic. Instead, take fabric shopping bags with you and use refillable water bottles (when local drinking water is available).
- Respect each other's cultures and customs and avoid imposing your beliefs.
Safety tips
- Always have a map (or app) on hand, especially when travelling at night.
- Be safety conscious: don’t display cash or valuables. Leave jewellery and expensive watches at home.
- Keep your belongings safe – use the hotel safe for passports and valuables and watch out for pickpockets and bag snatchers when out and about.
What do I do in an emergency?
- If passports or valuables are stolen, report the theft to the hotel/police immediately.
- Contact the Thompsons Holidays 24-hour care line to assist.

Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour
We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.
Superior Service
Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...
More focus on you
With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.
We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.
Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.
Speedier Check-Ins
Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.
More Relaxed Pace
Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.
