group bus trips to new york city

You’re planning a trip to New York City…the Big Apple. There’s something for everyone there—unbelievable restaurants, many of the world’s top museums and galleries, some of the country’s most famous historical sites, Broadway…it’s almost impossible not to have a good time. But this is New York, baby…you don’t want to bring a group here on your own, unless you want to spend all your time battling traffic, checking your GPS or looking at the clock. Let the professionals do it for you. With a charter bus from US Coachways , you can take in all NYC has to offer while we handle all the details.

Everything You Need to Know about Charter Bus Rentals

You’re new to charter bus travel. Here’s what you need to know:

Who is US Coachways?

US Coachways has been the standard bearer in the charter bus industry for over 30 years, working with groups, group leaders and businesses nationwide to provide safe, flexible and cost-effective ground transportation solutions for all types of events.

How do I set up a US Coachways charter bus trip to New York City?

We’ve streamlined the process to make it hassle-free. You can start at our user-friendly online cost calculator , where you can get a free estimate, or you can call 1-855-287-2427 to work directly with one of our experienced travel consultants.

How early do I need to arrange a US Coachways charter bus rental to New York City?

As with most things, the sooner you start, the more flexibility and options you’ll have. At US Coachways, though, because of our extensive connections with vendors nationwide and our decades of experience in the business, we can usually book an entire trip with little advance notice.

How much will it cost to rent a charter bus to New York City?

There are many factors that go into the calculation of the total cost of any charter bus, including the time of year and day of the week you’ll be traveling, how long you’ll be gone, the type of coach you rent, and whether you need any special amenities. You can look at your options and get a free estimate on our online cost calculator .

Do you offer different types of buses?

Yes. We believe that correctly matching you with the right bus is an essential part of a great trip. For small-to-midsized groups, we recommend the minibus, with plenty of storage space and seating for 24 to 35 passengers. For bigger groups, the full-sized charter bus is optimal, accommodating up to 57 people. Visit our fleet page to learn all your options.

What options do we have when choosing the type of charter bus?

Because we know the importance the right bus can have on the overall success of your outing, we’ll work hard to make certain you have choices. For small-to-medium-sized groups, we typically recommend the minibus, with options that seat anywhere from 24 to 35 and sufficient space for your personal items. If you’re traveling with a larger group, you’ll want a full-sized charter bus, with accommodations for up to 57 people. See our fleet page to learn more.

What features can we expect on the charter bus?

All of our charter bus rentals (other than some school bus rentals) come with high-back bucket seats, climate control, a great sound system and plenty of room for personal items. Other popular amenities, such as Wifi, DVD players and monitors, charging ports for your devices, P.A. systems, hardwood floors and leather seats, may also be available at an additional charge. We can also find ADA-compliant buses for your group.

Are we permitted to bring and consume alcoholic beverages on the charter bus?

Yes, provided you obtain approval from US Coachways before your trip begins. Your driver will always have the right to terminate or suspend alcohol consumption, and you must comply with all local laws where your bus travels.

How old do I have to be to rent a charter bus from US Coachways?

You must be at least 21 years of age to sign a charter bus rental contract. We arrange trips for high school or college group, but ask that the rental agreement be signed by a legal adult.

Meet your Guide and Begin your New York City Bus Tour

Our half-day New York City bus tour departs daily at 9 AM and 10 AM on 7th Ave between 50th & 51st Streets (in the middle of the block) and ends at 3 PM and 4 PM at the same location. Please note that ending times might be later than listed due to NYC traffic conditions. Meet your driver and guide, and take a seat aboard your comfortable bus to begin.

After a drive through the Times Square area, our first stop is at Central Park West and 72nd Street, at the Dakota Building (former home of John Lennon). The stop includes a short, guided walk into Central Park to visit the Strawberry Fields. Here, discover the Imagine mosaic dedicated to John Lennon and admire fine views over the celebrity-owned condominiums. We’ll also drive by Central Park Zoo, the famous Plaza Hotel, and Carnegie Hall.

Rockefeller Center

The second stop on our tour is Rockefeller Center, where beautiful views over St. Patrick’s Cathedral await. We’ll also see the location of the winter ice-skating rink and Christmas Tree, and NBC’s Today Show set.

5th Avenue and Empire State Building Views

Our third stop is on Fifth Avenue, where we pause to admire the iconic Empire State Building. This area also provides spectacular views of dramatic architecture featured in numerous books and films, including the Flatiron Building (Godzilla, Spider-Man), the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower (The Runaway Skyscraper, Futurama), and of course the Empire State Building (King Kong, Independence Day).

We drive by Madison Square Park – the original location of Madison Square Garden Arena, and our tour continues with a drive through iconic NYC neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village, Soho, Chinatown, and the Financial District. En route to the fourth stop, we drive by Wall Street for views of the New York Stock Exchange, Federal Hall (the location of the first Capitol Building of the United States), Trinity Church, and the famous Charging Bull sculpture on Broadway.

World Trade Center and 9/11 Memorial

Our fourth stop is the World Trade Center, where we visit the 9/11 Memorial. The tour does not include entry into the 9/11 Museum, but visitors can walk the grounds of the Memorial, visit the waterfalls of “Reflecting Absence,” (the footprints of where the original twin towers stood), and see the Survivor Tree that withstood the destruction of 9/11.

Gansevoort Liberty Market Lunch Stop

Around 1 pm, we’ll stop for a quick lunch break at Gansevoort Liberty Market. Lunch is not included on your tour, but this is a great place to stop and pick up something tasty.

The Staten Island Ferry Ride

Our fifth stop is the Whitehall Terminal in downtown Manhattan, for a boat ride on the Staten Island ferry. During your relaxing cruise, soak up magnificent views over the Statue of Liberty to the Manhattan and Brooklyn skyline beyond. The boat docks back at the Whitehall Terminal, where we board our bus to head back to our original departure point on 7th Avenue in the Times Square area. Our tour concludes at 3 PM and 4 PM, back where it began.

This tour was a fantastic way to see many sights at one time! Of course the sights were great to see but what was even better was the history, stories and information that Rachel provided throughout the tour. I’m so glad that Rachel was our guide. Not only did we see a lot, we learned a lot! - Melita D.

This is the second time we’ve taken this tour of New York City. We loved it the first time and were fortunate enough to have Rachel as our guide for the second time. The sights are fantastic, but Rachel MAKES the tour with her personal anecdotes. She kept everyone comfortable while keeping things moving so we could fit it all in. Thanks Rachel and USA Guided Tours!! - Kim R.

We have been to NY many times and decided to take a guided bus tour this time. It was a very informative and enjoyable experience. Our tour guide, Tyler, was exceptional. She had an outstanding personality, very knowledgeable about NY, kept everybody engaged and her delivery was top notch. We had several stops and she got off the bus and guided us on each one, answering all questions. There was just enough time to take in the site, but didn’t feel rushed. It was one of the best tours we have ever taken. - Jay E.

Google Reviews

The tour was on a small open-air bus and it was a small group of 13 people. The tour included a combination of walking (very short distances) and sightseeing on the bus for 6 hours. Our tour guide Steve was outstanding!! He was full of information and anecdotal stories that really brought the history and culture of New York alive. the tour also included a trip on the Staten Island Ferry which provided great views of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan. Although this tour is a bit expensive, it's worth it for a more personal tour with a native New Yorker like Steve. - Chip

My mom and I took this tour and I recommend that if you are looking to see the sights in NYC, you do the same!! We were guided by Tyler who was incredibly sweet and knew EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING and driven by Jose who somehow navigated the city without aggressively using the breaks or honking. The harbor tour at the end took us for about an hour and we go really close to the Statue of Liberty! This was the best and so happy I did it. - Kelly McCarthy

All I can say is Kudos to Betty for being an amazing driver through the city! She kept everyone safe through the smallest areas of the roads, Excellent driver! Jim was spectacular hosting us through the city.. from joking to detailed info of the city he kept everyone entertained. This was my first time doing a tour in a city before as well as a first time visit to NYC and I couldn't of had a better time anywhere else. It was a fantastic experience. Thank you guys for showing my wife and I such a pleasant experience. - Brandt Page

Why type of buses does USA Guided Tours use?

Our luxury tour buses provide a comfortable and climate-controlled environment for an enjoyable touring experience, while also offering protection from the elements. We cater to various group sizes with a diverse fleet of vehicles, from SUVs to premium motor-coaches, ensuring that our private tours can be customized for couples or large groups alike. To maintain a more intimate atmosphere on our public tours, we intentionally limit the capacity of our tour buses to keep the average group size small. We do our best to keep large, same-party groups together on the same bus, but please remember that the seating is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Once you claim your seats – they’re reserved only for you for the duration of the tour.

Are we allowed to bring luggage on the tour?

Unfortunately, our shuttles are not wheelchair accessible, nor is there storage for baby strollers. If you have a wheelchair, please call us to make special vehicle arrangements for your tour. Some of our tours involve longer walks so if you like, you may stay on board the shuttle, near the landmark, without exiting the shuttle bus every time.

The Big Apple is an exciting destination for friends, families, school groups, church members and business teams. The city boasts many famous landmarks, attractions, viewpoints and an intriguing mix of neighborhoods. While it’s impossible to explore all of them in a day — or a week — with proper planning, you can enjoy some of the most prominent attractions around the city during a one-day visit.

Before chartering a reliable ride that prioritizes your safety and comfort, create an itinerary of all the NYC places you’d like to see. With limited time on your hands, you’ve got to go in with a plan. Here are some must-see sites in New York to get the inspiration flowing.

Manhattan skyline

1. Times Square

If you want to experience New York in its full glory, you must take a walk in Times Square . The tourist hot spot gives you a feel of the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps. It’s among the world’s busiest pedestrian streets, lined with gigantic digital billboards, talented street performers, live music shows and a whole range of businesses.

If you walk through Times Square or people-watch from one of the many restaurants in the morning, keep an eye out for shows like Good Morning America and the Today Show. And don’t miss a chance to experience the historic Hard Rock Cafe New York , the Paramount Building and the M&M store . There’s also no better place to buy your New York City souvenirs than one of the many gift and specialty shops in Times Square. There’s the Disney Store, Yankees Clubhouse and countless other shops where you can pick up an “I Love NYC” T-shirt.

2. Central Park

Central Park is among the oldest and most-visited urban public parks in the United States. The park covers about 843 acres , or 1.3 square miles, of Manhattan and was established over 150 years ago to facilitate the recreational needs of the fast-growing city. Central Park provides New Yorkers and visitors a place to escape the busy and stressful city life.

The serene park is covered with green lawns, Instagrammable trees, broad lakes, winding streams, rolling slopes and stunning valleys. It’s also home to several animal species, including chipmunks, geese, ducks, squirrels and bunnies. When you only have a few hours to explore Central Park , take your pick of attractions like the Conservatory Water, the Alice in Wonderland sculpture, the Central Park Zoo and the Belvedere Castle.

3. Rockefeller Center

An iconic symbol of midtown Manhattan, the Rockefeller Center is a complex of buildings and plazas that house television studios, theatres, corporate headquarters, shops and restaurants. Some of the most iconic attractions you can see include the 70-story skyscraper that houses NBC studios, hundreds of historic art pieces and the Associated Press Building.

You can catch 360-degree views of the city from the Top of the Rock observation decks , explore and relax at the Channel Garden, and shop at the NBC store. Around the holidays, you can skate at The Rink at Rockefeller Center and check out the legendary Christmas tree. Another major attraction worth experiencing is the modern-style gardens on the seventh floor of Rockefeller Center. Looking to enjoy an elaborate dinner in New York? Make a reservation at the Rainbow Room for an unforgettable experience that includes fine dining, excellent skyline views and pleasant service.

4. 9/11 Memorial & Museum

Spend part of your day in New York exploring the 9/11 Memorial & Museum to better understand the events that led up to the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001. The memorial is free and open to the public every day of the week, but you pay for admission to the museum.

The museum blends architecture, archaeology and history to tell the story of the attacks. You can explore artifacts, imagery and rotating displays that pay tribute to the people who were affected. The museum also hosts events and programs online and offline to deepen your understanding of the attack’s continued impact on the United States and the world. You can support the museum by purchasing books, keepsakes and apparel at the Museum store.

5. Broadway Shows

Your day trip to New York isn’t complete without catching a live Broadway show . New York’s Theatre District is home to over 40 theatres, each with a minimum capacity of 500 seats. Bus trips to Broadway are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will bring you closer to your travel buddies in more ways than you can imagine.

Live Broadway shows are exhilarating because you get to indulge in the work of top-tier actors, orchestras and designers. You can enjoy elaborate performances in Broadway staples like “Wicked” or “Chicago,” catch a revival of a classic musical like “Sweeney Todd,” check out a newer option like “The Notebook” or “MJ” or opt for more family-friendly shows like “The Lion King.” It’s best to buy your tickets a few weeks, or even months, in advance. You can also often enjoy discounted rates for groups of more than 10 people.

6. Empire State Building

End your day trip by visiting the Empire State Building. Take in all of New York’s breathtaking beauty from one of the enclosed observatory decks, either 86 floors (1,050 feet) or 102 floors (1,250 feet) above Manhattan streets. On bright days, you can catch clear and stunning views of up to six states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. In the evening, you can enjoy panoramic views of the neon-lit New York skyline.

While the Empire State Building has spacious and fully air-conditioned waiting areas, you should book your tickets in advance to avoid long queues and waiting times. You’ll also appreciate the opportunity to take and post photos from the world’s most photographed building.

The Sopranos Filming Locations Bus Tour

First thing’s first: yes, we know that The Sopranos largely takes place in New Jersey. But just like Jersey residents proudly tout “NJ/NYC” in their Instagram bios, we’re going to lovingly co-opt the crime drama as our own. Starting in midtown Manhattan and crossing over into the Garden State, this Jersey-set tour will feature key locations from the Mafia-inspired HBO series, including the diner where Chris was shot, the spot where Big Pussy spoke with the FBI and the booth in Tony’s restaurant where the final episode was filmed.

Don't miss: You’ll also catch a glimpse of Satin Dolls (the Bada Bing bar).

Statue of Liberty Wit Ferry Ride

The Statue of Liberty was a joint effort between France and the United States, intended to commemorate the lasting friendship between the peoples of the two nations. The French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi created the statue itself out of sheets of hammered copper, while Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, the man behind the famed Eiffel Tower, designed the statue’s steel framework. The Statue of Liberty was then given to the United States and erected atop an American-designed pedestal on a small island in Upper New York Bay, now known as Liberty Island, and dedicated by President Grover Cleveland in 1886. Over the years, the statue stood tall as millions of immigrants arrived in America via nearby Ellis Island; in 1986, it underwent an extensive renovation in honor of the centennial of its dedication. Today, the Statue of Liberty remains an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, as well as one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks.

The Ultimate New York City Packing List

Here’s what to pack for a trip to New York City for every season.

group bus trips to new york city

Tips for What to Pack for New York City

Frequently asked questions.

  • Why Trust Travel + Leisure

Travel + Leisure / Marcus Millán

Top-notch restaurants, world-class entertainment, and historic landmarks galore: find all this and more in New York City. A trip to the Big Apple truly does offer something special for everyone, making it well worth a spot on any traveler’s must-visit list. With so much to see and do here, visitors should expect to spend the majority of their trip out and about exploring — and on their feet — which means it’s key to pack accordingly.

That said, whether it’s your first or your 20th time visiting the city, you’ll want to keep reading. As a lifelong New Yorker, I’ve rounded up the top things to pack for a trip here, conveniently broken down by season. I also added some insider style and packing tips to use while visiting the city.

If you’re planning on visiting New York City in the fall, be prepared to bring clothing that can be easily layered since the weather can vary dramatically depending on the time of day. For example, mornings and evenings are usually chillier compared to afternoons. A pair of trendy wide-leg jeans, such as the Paige Leenah jeans , can easily take you from day to night. The jeans get bonus points for the ultra-soft construction and slightly cropped silhouette, which pairs well with a pair of booties , such as these from Bos. & Co. The boots also feature a plush faux shearling lining for extra warmth.

A timeless crewneck, such as the Garnet Hill Pima Cotton Easy Sweater Tee , is another autumn staple. The lightweight sweater stands out for its supersoft cotton construction, slightly cropped silhouette, and relaxed fit sans being baggy. Layer it under a lightweight trench coat, like this water-repellent one from Mango that offers a flowy silhouette and a storm flap panel to prevent rain from seeping through to keep you dry and comfortable.

Keep the rest of the fall ‘fit simple with a Yankees baseball cap — oh so appropriate for a trip to the Big Apple — and a functional, albeit fashionable shoulder bag such as this MZ Wallace one made with ultradurable nylon.

Winters in New York City are snowy and cold, which is why it’s important to pack warm clothing. You can’t go wrong with a pair of black pants like the Spanx Smooth Flare Pants . The flared silhouette adds an extra-fashionable touch, and the pants look good with boots or sneakers. Style the pants with a cozy sweater like this cotton-blend pullover from & Other Stories.

In terms of outerwear, opt for a packable jacket like the Halfdays Nellie Packable Puffer Jacket , which will keep you warm without taking up precious suitcase space. While the jacket is incredibly lightweight, it offers excellent insulation. For an extra layer of warmth, wrap yourself in Aritzia’s Wilfred Diamond Mosaic Blanket Scarf — a unique piece featuring a reversible design, original jacquard artwork, hand-finished fringed edits, and a supersoft merino wool construction. Similarly, it’s worth packing a pair of gloves or mittens — I especially love these ones from Hillhouse Home to keep my hands warm and toasty in the freezing (or below-freezing) temperatures.

Lastly, functional footwear is another must since the snow, rain, and sleet can cause slippery sidewalks. Enter Sorel’s Explorer Chelsea Boots , offering a waterproof construction and durable rubber outsole for optimal tread. Complete your look with a compact purse like Cuyana’s Easy Phone Tote . Constructed with supple Italian pebbled leather, this tiny but mighty bag is incredibly versatile since it can be worn in multiple different ways. The zippered compartment ensures your belongings are safely stowed away, so you need not worry about pickpockets.

Between the blooming flora and fauna, (and the emerging pleasant temperatures) springtime in NYC is nothing short of spectacular. That said, rain should be expected, which is why you’ll want to come prepared by packing a rain jacket. The FP Movement Singin' In The Rain Packable Jacket is a favorite for its wind-resistant and waterproof properties, and it’s great for travel since it packs into itself for easy carrying.

Instead of a basic tee, tank, or bulky sweater, opt for a long-sleeve bodysuit , like this versatile pick from Abercrombie & Fitch. Depending on the occasion, it can be dressed up or down with accessories like a chunky necklace and oversized earrings or an edgy leather blazer . Style it with a pair of on-trend barrel pants, such as the Everlane Way-high Curve Jeans , that combine comfort and style.

In terms of shoes, you can’t go wrong with a pair of platform sneakers like these ones from Dr. Scholl’s that boasts a water-resistant finish for an extra layer of protection against rain. Speaking of the rain, stay shielded with the help of this ultra-compact Davek Mini Umbrella that clocks in at just 8 ounces and measures less than 7 inches when closed. Due to its small size, it easily fits inside any purse, including Rebecca Minkoff’s Convertible Mini Julian Backpack . This convertible pack can be worn as a backpack, crossbody bag, and shoulder bag, making it a prime pick for travel.

New York City comes alive in the summer months when the warm weather draws out locals and travelers alike in search of fun in the sun in the form of outdoor events, festivals, and programming throughout the five boroughs . That said, it’s important to dress accordingly since the weather can get especially hot and humid. Whether you’re grabbing brunch or trekking across town, you can’t go wrong with a short-sleeve dress such as the oh-so-versatile Muscle Tee Midi Dress from Everlane, which features a lightweight cotton construction, an oversized fit for extra breathing room, and side slits for a cooling touch. Should the weather get a bit breezy, accessorize with the weightless Gaspard Cardigan from Sézane, which is just as buttery-soft as it is breathable.

Functional and supportive footwear, such as the Kizik Prague Slip-on Shoes , is also a must. These innovative sneakers are designed to be truly hands-free (read: no need to bend down to tie your laces or spend way too long wiggling your foot into the shoe) thanks to the brand’s Flex Arc technology, which pops the heel back into place once you slip into them and hugs your foot.

Complete the look with a fashion-forward bag to keep your belongings safely stowed away. The Quince Convertible Crescent Shoulder Bag stands out for its on-trend.

Bring clothes that can be work from day to night

The Big Apple is known as “the city that never sleeps,” which means visitors will likely be out of your hotel room for most of the day. As such, you should be prepared to go from daytime activities like strolling through Central Park or perusing the city’s many museums and going straight into evening activities like dinner or a Broadway show . With this in mind, it’s key to pack versatile clothes that can easily and effortlessly take you from day to night, plus or minus a few accessories to elevate your look.

Comfortable shoes are a non-negotiable

It’s no secret that New York is among the country’s most walkable cities , and it’s arguably best explored on foot. Be sure to pack comfortable footwear to prevent achy, sore feet after racking up several — if not tens of — thousands of steps each day of your trip. Supportive sneakers and comfortable flats are all great options; however, you may opt to leave the heels at home unless you need them for a specific event like, say, a business trip or a wedding.

Put simply, there is no “bad” time to visit New York City . What’s more, the best time to visit the city ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. For example, the winter months of January to March coincide with the destination’s low season due to the cold, snowy weather; however, it also offers fewer crowds coupled with affordable lodging and airfare. If it’s warm, sunny weather you’re after, consider a summer sojourn here. Otherwise, take advantage of shoulder season offerings — and postcard-worthy scenery — by visiting the spring when the trees and flowers begin to bloom, and fall when the colorful foliage is on full display.

While this ultimately depends on the weather, comfortable shoes are a must-have all year since you’ll be walking so much. Additionally, ditch a bulky backpack in favor of a lightweight purse, such as a crossbody or belt bag , which offers hassle- and hands-free storage of your most important essentials such as a cell phone, keys, and wallet.

As previously mentioned, heels should be left at home unless you have a specific event you need them for. Supportive shoes are the name of the game for New York City. Instead of bringing full-sized toiletries, makeup, and skincare products — which can easily weigh down your suitcase and take up precious packing space — opt to bring travel-sized toiletries to save packing and small hotel counter space.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this story, travel, fashion, and commerce writer — and lifelong New Yorker — Lauren Dana Ellman relied on her own personal recommendations and expertise to narrow down the best things to pack for a trip to NYC. She also made sure to include picks that combined comfort, style, and versatility no matter the reason or season for visiting the Big Apple.
