Covid Travel Restrictions Virgin Islands

Updated: May 31, 2022

As one of the few locations that have remained open to travelers during the pandemic, there are some things that you should know about visiting St Croix and the Covid travel restrictions to the Virgin Islands in 2021. So, we’ve put together (and continued to update) St Croix COVID-19 travel restrictions and travel tips.

The Mask Mandate in the USVI has been lifted as of March 14, 2022 . Masks are no longer required to be worn inside all commercial and government indoor spaces. At this time, masks continue to be required to be worn in schools, hospitals, healthcare facilities, ports of entry, and airports. We recommend you carry one with you just in case.

Covid Travel Restrictions Virgin Islands – DISCONTINUED!

The US Virgin Islands has transitioned to the “Open Doors” phase in responsed to COVID-19 and as of June 1, 2022 travelers arriving in the US Virgin Island from locations within the US no longer are required to provide a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccine. The USVI Travel Portal and QR code system will shut down as of June 1st!

‼️ Travel From A Foreign Country ‼️

Federal guidelines and restrictions continue to apply for all international travel, including travel from the British Virgin Islands. The Federal government continues to require travelers coming from a foreign country (regardless of whether you are a US citizen or permanent resident alien) to present a negative test result within 1 day of commencement of travel to the Territory. (This means travel from any country that is NOT  a US state, territory, or possession of the United States).

You do not need to be tested when you leave the US Virgin Islands and travel (back) to the mainland states. (The United States Virgin islands is NOT a foreign country.)

USVI SunScreen Law 🌞🏖️

Help us protect our fragile coral reef ecosystem. It’s the law. A void sunscreens that contain the “Toxic 3 Os” of oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene – they are prohibited in the United States Virgin Islands.   Learn more about Sunscreen and our Coral Reefs, as well as reef-safe sunscreen options. .

Even better news is that all businesses in the US Virgin Islands continue to be open. You’ll find St Croix restaurants and bars open – including some new ones! – with live entertainment. Be sure to follow our St Croix Calendar to see what’s happening on the island while you’re here. Reservations are always recommended though most are now running at 100% capacity. With many of the island’s restaurants open-air establishments – dining out isn’t a lot different these days.

No Mask, No Service . As of March 14, 2022 masks are no longer required to be worn inside all public indoor spaces including stores, restaurants, hotel lobbies, taxis, government office etc. At this time, masks continue to be required to be worn in schools, hospitals, healthcare facilities, ports of entry, and airports. One of the perks of the islands is, of course, that we have summer year-round, and outdoor activities abound. There are plenty of places and spaces for you to practice social distancing while enjoying your vacation. Vacation villas, like the collection at Vacation St Croix , are also a great way to enjoy your vacation while maintaining some distance from others. You have your own private pool and fully equipped house to relax and enjoy for the duration of your stay.

Want to know what’s happening while you will be here? Be sure to follow the St Croix Calendar for live music, events, and more.

And of course, there are plenty of tours and things to do on St Croix that are operating with plenty of open air. Ride horses on the beach with Cruzan Cowgirls or head out to Buck Island for a snorkeling trip with Caribbean Sea Adventures or one of the many other boats headed that way. If staying underwater is more your style – there’s plenty to see! Check out our favorite Scuba operators and they’ll get you out to the best spots.

St Croix COVID-19 Travel Tips

Bring a Mask. Although it is no longer required by the airlines, you may find places that you wish to wear it or local businesses that may require it based on positivity rates. It never hurts to have one on-hand just in case.

Sanitize Sanitize Sanitize! When I travel, I carry a baggy full of Clorox Wipes handy so that I can wipe down the armrests and tray table as soon as I sit down. I also use them to open bathroom doors in airports when I have layovers. And, of course, I use PLENTY of hand sanitizer throughout my trip.

Consider purchasing travel insurance. Check with your credit card, often they offer automatic travel insurance but you need to be aware of the restrictions. Otherwise, check out travel insurance to see what may be available in the case of a delay or cancellation due to illness or even weather. Most accommodations here in the islands will happily credit you for a stay at a later date if you need to cancel for reasons due to COVID-19. But, it’s always wise to ask about cancellation policies at the time you are booking your stay.

Ready to pack your bags? Check out our packing recommendations for your Caribbean vacation and be sure to learn about Reef Safe sunscreen before you hit the beach.

We can’t wait to welcome you back to St Croix and the US Virgin Islands. Just please be respectful while you are here and help to protect our community from the virus in the same way you would protect your family.

Do you need a COVID test when traveling by boat from Puerto Rico to the USVI?? Do you need to report your entry by boat to the USVI from Puerto Rico on CBP Roam website??

Every traveler by air or sea must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 5 days of arrival. For further details and information, please refer to the official information from the USVI Department of Tourism at https://usviupdate.com/ regarding Coast Guard or CBP information regarding vessels, you would need to check directly with them if it is not addressed on the DOT site to be sure.

Yes, travelers arriving by air *or* by sea are required to test prior to arrival. Please refer to https://www.usvitravelportal.com/ for all official travel restrictions.

I have received both shots of the Moderna vaccine. Do I still need a COVID-19 negative test to travel from New Mexico to St. Croix. If so, why ?

Yes. All traveler’s to the US Virgin Islands are required to upload test results prior to arrival regardless of vaccine status. If you are at least two weeks post your final dose, you can obtain a positive antibody test result. This is valid up to 4-months prior to arrival.

I am going to get the Antibody Test since it is good for 4 months and makes planning a trip much easier. How do I get the results to the USVI Travel Portal. Thanks

The link is in the article above. https://usvitravelportal.com

Is there a Jump-Up Block Party event planned for July 2021 (the quarterly event where the streets are closed down and live entertainment)? If so, do you have the date? Thanks.

Not at this time. As of now, public events are prohibited and the limit for private events is 100 guests per current Governor Bryan’s Executive Order related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Do you have to wear your mask outside in St. Croix? Or just inside? We want to go but my husband had bad asthma and has a hard time wearing it outside.

Hi Judy – Masks must be worn indoors at businesses and when entering restaurants. Outdoors in public spaces (and of course private) masks may be removed.

For those that have been vaccinated in the USVI the Polaris Key program seems to work great. It took about 10 days to complete the setup process but once done the it only took 20 minutes to get a “Green” approval response from the USVI travel portal. Worked very well and was easy.

Unfortunately, the Polariskey system seems to work great for some, but not at all for others. I’m fully vaccinated and have tried it 5 times in the past month to no avail.

Where is the green QR code obtained for entry into the St. Croix Covid testing portal? I have not found a testing site in my city that provides such a code or is even familiar with it.

The green QR code is provided by the USVI Travel portal after you upload your information and COVID test. The green QR code signifies that you have been approved to arrive in the US Virgin Islands. It is emailed to you after your submit your information.

A BETTER POINT OF VIEW

Point Udall is the easternmost point in the United States. It’s about a half-hour drive from Christiansted, but well worth the journey— once you arrive at the rocky bluff, you can wander up a paved road to the overlook for the best views on the island.

St. Croix’s culinary scene is as diverse as its landscape. Stop in at any small local eatery and you’ll find fresh seafood dishes, like Cruzan Style Gundy (balls of ground herring and spices), that nod to French, Thai and Dutch cuisine— with plenty of West Indian spice and favorites like conch fritters. You’ll also find boardwalk bars serving traditional American fare, like hamburgers with rum punch.

Getting to St. Croix

St. croix history and culture, best st. croix beaches, hikes, shops, restaurants, and more, best st. croix resorts.

Jenna Szerlag / Design Pics / Getty Images

At just 84 square miles, you'd think St. Croix would fly right under the radar. But in the U.S. Virgin Islands , those miles stack up to make it the largest island in the archipelago. And every square inch is brimming with something special for visitors. So, bookmark this page for your next trip to St. Croix to remember everything you should see, do, and explore on the island paradise.

St. Croix is relatively accessible to U.S.-based travelers. Several leading air carriers (American, JetBlue, Spirit, and Delta) operate nonstop flights from major gateways like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Perhaps most convenient for this set of travelers is the fact Americans do not need a passport to enter, as the island is an unincorporated U.S. territory.

However, Americans will notice one major difference upon landing: The local population drives on the left. But the transition is easy, thanks to "Keep Left" road signs and stickers prominently displayed in rental cars and road signs providing helpful reminders along the way.

These Over-the-top Honeymoons Are Adventures That You'll Never Forget

While on the island, visitors may catch a glimpse of several different flags swaying in the breeze, including the Dannebrog, the national flag of Denmark. This is a holdover from the island's colonial-era past, prior to the purchase by the U.S. and its transition of power in 1917.

The culture on the island is a deep combination of African, European, Caribbean, native Carib and Taino, and American heritages. It's a place where storytelling and music can be found on every corner and town square, and it's a good idea to stop, learn, and appreciate what makes this destination and its locals so special.

St. Croix appeals to a broad range of adventurous and culturally curious travelers. The island's twin towns, Christiansted in the east and Frederiksted in the west, offer a wealth of shopping, fine dining, art, and historical attractions.

Fort Frederik in Frederiksted is historically significant from an Afro-conscious perspective. It was here, in 1848, that the proclamation freeing all enslaved Africans throughout the Danish West Indies was made. A bust commemorating General Buddhoe , a formerly enslaved person who led the insurrection that proved pivotal in earning emancipation, sits just outside the fort's weathered red walls. Additional historical attractions in Frederiksted include the Estate Whim Great House and Museum (the only sugar plantation museum in the Virgin Islands) and the Lawaetz Museum.

Christiansted is also home to several centuries-old attractions. Fort Christiansvaern forms the centerpiece of the Christiansted National Historic Site , a collection of carefully restored Danish colonial structures dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Arguably, the bigger draws in Christiansted, however, are the shopping and dining venues. Here, exciting foodie adventures and one-of-a-kind buys await in cafes, restaurants, and boutiques housed in distinctive structures pulled right from the past.

Top restaurants in the neighborhood include Savant , Café Christine , Galangal , and Rum and Wine Bar Restaurant . Meanwhile, savvy shoppers keen on collecting unique mementos won't want to miss Sonya's , home of the original St. Croix hook bracelet. Crucian Gold and ib Designs are also big on producing fine, handmade jewelry born and bred on the island.

Away from the twin towns, St. Croix's beaches, hiking, championship golf courses, snorkeling, and scuba diving options fill days with thrills that keep travelers coming back for more.

For a stunning view, put in the work with a hike up Goat Hill , where you'll enjoy the full expanse of the island extending westward and the easternmost point of the U.S., Point Udall, to the east.

The Jack and Isaac Bay Preserve below Goat Hill allows travelers to combine hiking and beachcombing in one rewarding adventure. Low-impact trails lead to the remote, unspoiled beaches lined with sugar-white sand, lush trees, and blessedly nothing else.

Additional hiking trails are also available at Buck Island, a small, uninhabited island just off St. Croix's northeast shore. Buck Island and its surrounding reef and waters lie within the Buck Island Reef National Monument , a protected natural environment managed by the U.S. National Park Service. Hiking adventures here are a boon for bird-watchers or anyone seeking to commune with nature in peace and tranquility. An undersea snorkeling trail along the Buck Island Reef makes it easy for visitors to familiarize themselves with the coral and sea creatures that call these protected waters home.

Several tour operators offer half-and full-day excursions to Buck Island. Chief among them is Captain Carl of Buck Island Charters . The family-owned charter company provides a nonmotorized full-sail Buck Island experience aboard trimaran sailing vessels.

For scuba divers, nothing beats the fun at The Wall at Cane Bay . One of the world's renowned dive sites, The Wall drops to depths in excess of 13,000 feet. The deep waters here teem with out-of-this-world wildlife and coral formations.

The leading hotels and resorts in St. Croix are a bit different than those found on other Caribbean islands . In place of large, all-inclusive properties and familiar international brand names, St. Croix hotels are generally smaller and more intimate. Often, they echo the island's rich history. And many of the newest hotels are actually updated and reimagined versions of older, historic properties.

The Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort

The Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort truly has it all: a stunning 18-hole championship golf course, modern tennis facilities, a full-service spa, multiple dining options, three beaches, and an array of water sports equipment. The estate was originally founded in 1653, when the Knights of Malta controlled St. Croix. Historic remnants of the old plantation, like the sugar mill that sits astride the main entrance to the hotel lobby, remain on the grounds. The property was converted into a hotel in 1947, earning The Buccaneer the distinction of being the oldest family-owned and operated property in the Caribbean. "Book a room with an ocean-view balcony and take advantage of having three beaches on property, said T+L editorial director Nina Ruggiero after a 2018 stay. "Mermaid Beach is for activites — rent snorkels, paddle boards, and kayaks — or you can relax on the quieter Grotto and Whistle Beaches."

Company House Hotel

Nestled in the heart of downtown Christiansted, the historic Company House Hotel is a cozy and freshly remodeled oasis of refinement built on simplicity. A somewhat secret grotto pool and an elegant mahogany bar in the lobby serve as the two main gathering points. There's no restaurant, though this encourages guests to seek out the many fantastic restaurants that have recently elevated Christiansted into a culinary hot spot in the area.

The most stylish hotel to open in St. Croix in a generation, The Fred sits right on the waterfront of its namesake town, Frederiksted, on the west coast of the island. Formerly a private residence, the property's structure dates back to the 18th century. The swanky pool, elevated sundeck, party-sized Jacuzzi, half-moon bar, and boardwalk above the beach are all new additions to the building.

Feather Leaf Inn

What's old is new again (and much improved) at the Feather Leaf Inn . Formerly known as Estate Butler's Bay, the property is an 18th-century Danish sugar plantation. Rather than glorifying its dark, colonial past, Feather Leaf builds on its agrarian roots, emphasizing healthy, plant-based food and sustainable tourism. Much of the grounds are devoted to developing a seaside botanical forest filled with tropical fruits and herbs. As for the accommodations, nine guest rooms are spread among three separate buildings, and each is 100% solar-powered, distinctively styled, and features jaw-dropping sunset views over a calm, secluded bay.

Lady’s Itinerary for 5 Days in St Croix, USVI

Today I want to share my itinerary for 5 days in St Croix, USVI with you. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, it’s also the least visited. That means St Croix is a great place to soak up the sun on the Caribbean Sea away from the crowds that can fill neighboring St Thomas and St John. Full of beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and laid-back island atmosphere, St Croix is the perfect getaway. Let me show you why.

5 Days in St Croix

5 Days in St Croix

I’m spending 5 days in St Croix to get some much-needed sunshine and see what this part of the United States has to offer. I’m staying with locals who know the island well, and I can’t wait to experience some of the best things to do in St Croix with them.

Beach St Croix

St Croix Itinerary: Day 1

My flight arrives in the late afternoon, and we head to their house after I land. It’s near Christiansted, one of the main towns on the island.

It’s a great area to stay in St Croix , and as soon as I catch a glimpse of the views of the Caribbean Sea and lush hills from the terrace I know I’m going to have a good time here.

St Croix Sugar Mill

St Croix Itinerary: Day 2

The next morning our 5 days in St Croix continue with a trip to Christiansted.

Christiansted, St Croix

We start by shopping in town, picking up some clothes at Southern Saint and admiring the jewelry at ib designs. We can’t resist buying some hot sauce and guava jam at a shop selling local products, too.

St Croix Building

When lunchtime comes we make our way to a local restaurant in Christiansted that’s hiding in plain sight. We sit outside on the terrace and tuck into heaping plates of falafel with frozen guava pie for dessert.

St Croix Restaurant

After lunch we walk along the boardwalk and take in the beach bars and restaurants in Christiansted. At the end we come to the historic Fort Christiansvaern and a collection of bright yellow buildings redolent of St Croix’s Danish colonial past.

St Croix Fort

They’re not the only heritage buildings in town, either. We spot a number of churches and old government buildings interspersed among the colorful shopfronts around the town.

St Croix Waterfront

When we’re done shopping and sightseeing, our 5 days in St Croix continue with a trip to Point Udall for sunset. We park the car by the sundial monument and enjoy the views of Buck Island from the easternmost point in the United States.

St Croix Sunset

When night falls we drive over to Duggan’s Reef restaurant in Teague Bay. Its walls are lined with college pennants and it has a great casual atmosphere. Lobster is the specialty here, and we all enjoy heaping plates of it.

St Croix Itinerary: Day 3

The next morning our 5 days in St Croix continue with a trip to the beach. We head to The Buccaneer , a hotel near Christiansted with great beaches.

When we arrive, we settle into lounge chairs on the sand, sipping pina coladas and soaking up the island paradise for the day.

St Croix Beach

We have lunch at the beachfront restaurant, The Mermaid, where everything from crab cakes to conch fritters goes down a treat. The mahi with fried plantains is delicious, too.

St Croix Lunch

In the afternoon we play beach games and explore The Buccaneer’s other stretch of sand. Afterwards we walk up to the historic sugar mill by the lobby before heading back to the house to get ready for the evening’s activities.

St Croix Hotel

The first of them is a bioluminescent kayak tour in Salt River Bay. It’s a unique excursion that involves kayaking over to a bay full of microorganisms that glow in the dark.

Kayaking St Croix

Our see-through kayak allows us to view the neon green and sparkling white water as we paddle under the stars. We also get to see the point where Christopher Columbus landed on his second journey to the New World.

From Salt River Bay it’s a short drive to the stylish AMA at Cane Bay restaurant at The Waves at Cane Bay hotel .

We sit outside on a deck over the water and enjoy tuna tartare, mahi, and other dishes to the sound of crashing waves. It’s one of the best meals of the trip.

St Croix Itinerary: Day 4

The next morning our 5 days in St Croix continue with a drive to the Carambola Beach Resort . When we arrive, we head off on a hike through the trees above the sea.

St Croix View

We walk for an hour along the narrow Trumbull Trail, spotting hermit crabs and tiny lizards along the way. Eventually we emerge from the trees to find ourselves on the pebble beach at Annaly Bay. The tide pools here are ripe for swimming.

St Croix Tide Pool

We take a dip with the fish, then hike back to the Carambola Beach Resort . We pick up the car, driving into the lush interior of the island for lunch at the Mt. Pellier Domino Club near Frederiksted.

The burgers and local Mamma Wanna rum are classics, and the resident beer-drinking pigs are an unusual sight to see in the rainforest.

Restaurant in St Croix

From the Domino Club we drive back to Christiansted for drinks at the Breakers Roar Tiki Bar, a waterfront bar with cocktails that come in unique glasses with flames coming out the top.

Dark wood and lamps shaped like old diving helmets and puffer fish round out the tropical scene.

St Croix Tiki Bar Cocktail

It’s a short walk from the tiki bar to Savant, where we settle in for dinner in the enchanting garden. We order everything from shrimp and grits to grilled tuna, and it’s all delicious.

St Croix Itinerary: Day 5

The next morning our 5 days in St Croix culminate in a snorkeling trip to Buck Island. After a quick coffee at VI Coffee Roasters in the King Christian Hotel , we leave on a boat from the waterfront in Christiansted.

St Croix Boat

20 minutes later, we’re snorkeling on one of the world’s only underwater trails. It takes us around the Buck Island Reef, where we spot fish of all shapes and colors.

Buck Island

Afterwards the boat drops us off on Turtle Beach, a beautiful stretch of shoreline with pelicans diving in the turquoise water. There’s white sand and plenty of sunshine, and it’s a great place to end our trip.

When the boat gets back to Christiansted, we head to the house to get ready to fly home. It’s been a memorable trip to St Croix, and I feel lucky to have experienced it with locals.

This may be the least visited part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, but if word gets out about how amazing it is, everyone’s going to go. I recommend going before they do.

Thank you for sharing again. Lately, I have fallen in love with brightly colored yellow buildings. Why? I don’t know why.

That’s great!

You’re welcome! It’s an amazing place!

I have reviewed this several times and SAVED IT FOR SURE! To make we have it upon arrival. Thank you so much. This was very informative ♥️

You’re welcome! I’m so glad to hear that.

Rainbow Beach is located in Frederiksted and is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches on St. Croix. It’s the perfect spot to get some sunshine on your first day. You can bring your own or rent snorkel gear on the beach. There are also plenty of watersport options to choose from if you want a more exciting day on the beach.

At the end of the day, enjoy live music, sunset views, and a classic USVI rum runner at Rhythms at Rainbow Beach .

The US Virgin Islands are full of history to explore! After a day in the sun, it’s time to check out what Frederiksted has to offer!

Head to Fort Frederik, an 18th-century Danish fort located in Frederiksted Historic District. You can take a self-guided tour of Fort Frederik and see one of the many protected landmarks in St. Croix. The Fort Frederik Museum is also a great spot to visit while you learn about the history of St. Croix.

Just a short walk down the road, you’ll see Frederiksted Market Square . Wander around Frederiksted and enjoy the city area. This is where the action is! Market Square is home to restaurants, duty-free shopping, and sightseeing.

Before sunset, you can hit the Frederiksted Pier . This is a hidden gem for snorkeling and diving. You can fish off the pier, or just jump in the water to cool off! Most importantly, it faces the west, so you can watch the unobstructed view of the sunset over the horizon.

For the adventurous souls, this 5 miles hike can be a bit challenging, but one of the most popular things to do in St. Croix.

Annaly Bay Tide Pools are naturally formed pools found on St. Croix’s North Shore. You’ll want to head out early to avoid hiking home during peak sun times. Hike through the rain forest of St. Croix to the breathtaking views of the tide pools. It’ll be more than worth it!

Depending on the weather, the water can be rough and the terrain difficult to maneuver around, so be cautious during this trek. On a calm day, enjoy splashing around, swimming, or even do some snorkeling around the natural pools. Be sure to keep an eye out for turtles, stingrays, and other marine life!

You’ll begin and end this hike at the Carambola Beach Resort. This is a great spot to spend a night or two if you want to explore the North Shore a bit.

For day 4 of your St. Croix Itinerary, head to the East side of the island to Christiansted for downtown exploration. Christiansted is the busier and more lively town in St. Croix. You’ve enjoyed a few relaxing days exploring nature on the west side of the island. Now is the perfect time for some excitement!

Check into one of the many places to stay in Christiansted and hit the Christiansted Boardwalk and enjoy some waterfront restaurants and bars. In the morning, you can have coffee and brunch at Caroline’s Breakfast and enjoy lunch and dinner at 40 Eats and Drinks or Too Chez.

Don’t forget to do some shopping in downtown Christiansted and take advantage of the duty-free benefit in US Virgin Islands. US Citizens can take home $1600 worth of duty-free shopping every 30 days!

If you’re looking for more of the rich history of St. Croix, visit the oldest site in Christiansted and head to Fort Christiansvaern Historic Site , one of the best-preserved and largest colonial forts in the Caribbean.

Day 5 of your St. Croix Itinerary is sure to be a favorite! Buck Island National Reef Monuments is one of the most beautiful, lively, and colorful coral reefs in the Caribbean. Buck Island is a can’t-miss activity in anyone’s St. Croix itinerary, so be sure to plan your trip ahead of time.

The Buck Island National Reef is a protected monument located off the coast of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. The reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including sea turtles, coral, and tropical fish. You can even spot a few sharks circling around this reef!

travel to st croix 2022

You can only get to this island by boat, and there are many tours operating full and half-day excursions to this breathtaking piece of paradise. Visitors can snorkel or scuba dive to explore this famous reef. Buck Island National Reef is an extraordinary place to see the wonders of nature and experience the beauty of the underwater world.

When you get back from your excursion, stop by one of St. Croix’s many rum shacks for a refreshing drink before finding some classic Caribbean dining.

Make your way to the easternmost point of St. Croix…and the easternmost point of the US, Point Udall! Being the easternmost point, it’s also the first place in the US that sees the sunrise in the morning! Talk about a perfect way to start your day.

Point Udall serves as a monument that was built to celebrate the new millennia and marks the first spot of daylight in the US. As you can guess, not only are the views from the lookout point breathtaking, but you can also enjoy a scenic ride down when the sun is up.

travel to st croix 2022

From there, make your way to Isaacs Bay Beach for snorkeling and watersports. The trailhead to Isaac’s Beach begins near Point Udall and is only a short 20ish minute walk to get there. This beach will likely be quiet and calm and is the perfect place for snorkeling and swimming. It’s also great to cool off in the water after your short hike!

Although it’s always sad to end your vacation, especially a Caribbean one. For the last day of your St. Croix Itinerary, make the most of it by booking a later flight and spending one last day enjoying the Caribbean sands and waters in St. Croix.

A unique spot to hit in Christiansted is Protestant Cay (pronounced “key”). It’s a short ferry ride from the Christiansted Boardwalk and will take you to a private cay where you’ll find “Hotel on the Cay”.

Hotel on the Cay is one-of-a-kind, as it’s the only structure that lives on the cay. You can rent a room from Hotel on the Cay, or buy a day pass to enjoy the secluded, private-like island feel. There are watersports and rentals on the cay to enjoy a full day before your flight on this incredible beach.

travel to st croix 2022

Though I would suggest making the trip, if you want to stay on St. Croix for your last day, you can also try out Tamarind Reef Beach or Buccaneer Beach.

When you’re drained from your last day in the sun, depart to the St. Croix Airport afterward, feeling relaxed, refreshed, and sun-kissed! We hope you had an amazing trip and that you’ll come back to visit us soon!

St. Croix is known for having open space, beautiful beaches, and unlike some Caribbean islands, two downtown areas with lively restaurants, entertainment, and excitement. USVI is well known for its duty-free shopping for US citizens. It’s also the largest of the three US Virgin Island territories.

Most notably, Buck Island Reef National Monument is just a boat ride away from the Christiansted Pier. It’s one of the most popular spots in the Caribbean for snorkeling and home to Turtle Beach, one of the most beautiful white sand, clear water beaches in the world.

If you’re looking for an island that has it all, St. Croix is worth visiting .

How Many Days Do You Need in St. Croix?

While no vacation to St. Croix will ever be long enough, 7 days is actually the perfect amount of time to spend in St. Croix! If you want busier days and are able to pack everything in to one trip, you could see everything on the island in 4-5 days, but it definitely won’t be as relaxing!

If you need to prioritize, the most important things to do in St. Croix are Buck Island Reef National Monument, Annaly Tide Pools, and exploring Christiansted and Frederiksted.

Really in a rush and need to squeeze everything in a long weekend? Or, maybe you want to spend more time exploring the other US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas and St. John. Either way, here’s a quick St. Croix 3 Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive early and hike to Annaly Tide Pools. Drive over to Frederiksted to explore downtown, visit the National Park, spend the afternoon at Rainbow Beach, or visit the historic sites.

Day 2: Make your way to Christiansted and hop on a tour to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Spend the afternoon at Hotel on the Cay and grab dinner and drinks in downtown Christiansted.

Day 3: Wake up with the sunrise at Point Udall, go to Issacs’s Bay Beach for snorkeling and swimming, then hop around some of the beaches around Christiansted before heading to the airport!

December to April is the best and most popular time to go to St. Croix. This is also the heaviest tourist season. If you want to avoid hurricane season and crowds, try heading to St. Croix in November or April/May.

Hurricane season officially goes from June 1 to November 30 in US Virgin Islands. You can find great deals during this time, and still enjoy the island, but you might run into some afternoon showers.

As long as there’s not a hurricane, and don’t worry – the Caribbean always has their eye on hurricane watch – the weather in St. Croix is always warm and enjoyable.

Hopefully, this St. Croix Itinerary is everything you need and more to start planning your next Caribbean adventure. St. Croix is a beautiful island with so much to offer. Whether you’re planning a family trip, romantic getaway, or solo vacation, you can take advantage of this 7 day itinerary.

Caribbean Uncovered

Is St Croix Worth Visiting? (2024 Travel Guide)

Caribbean Uncovered Privacy Policy

Wondering, is St Croix Worth Visiting this year?

With all the promising destinations in the Caribbean, it can be hard to decide where to plan your next trip! If you want to know whether St. Croix, USVI, should be on your go-to list– you’ve come to the right place.

I absolutely love St. Croix, and so do the thousands of visitors who come to vacation here – many returning year after year!

Below, I’m going to show you why St. Croix is unquestionably worth visiting this year…and a few reasons why it may not be worth visiting for you. It’s up to you, after all!

Is St Croix Worth Visiting?

Yes! St. Croix is worth visiting . There’s something valuable for everyone on this island, which is the largest of the three main US Virgin Islands . Here are my top reasons to visit St. Croix!

Here are just a few of the top reasons St Croix is worth visiting.

You also have two other beautiful islands nearby. Wondering which is best for you?

9 Reasons You Should Visit St Croix This Year (and some travel tips for you!)

1. largest us virgin island.

Aerial view of lush green islands surrounded by deep blue sea, with white clouds dotting the sky above.

St. Croix is one of three main US Virgin Islands, and it is by far the largest territory in terms of size and population.

Although it is not as widely known as some of the other Caribbean islands, it has a lot to offer in terms of natural beauty, history, and culture.

The size is one of the main reasons to visit St. Croix. You get to experience its unique character and get away from the more crowded tourist areas, or hang around the exciting, lively areas if you choose.

2. St Croix offers Spectacular Beaches and Adventures

Waves crashing against a rugged limestone coastline under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds.

One of my favorite activities to do on St. Croix (especially on a hot day!) is to head out to the beach and take a soak in the refreshing water.

The beaches on St. Croix are far from average. Mesmerizing blue waters, powdery soft sands, and cool breezes await you at the shorelines of this fantastic island. Although there are many beautiful beaches, however, they are not all the same!

The best beaches on St. Croix each have unique qualities to offer .

Take Rainbow Beach in Frederiksted – it’s the perfect beach for a lively family day, with food, music, and sports right around the corner as you lounge and play.

On the other hand, Isaac’s Bay Beach is a secluded shore only accessible by hiking trail , a relaxing setting fit for couples or solo travelers .

Visit Buck Island offshore (my favorite place in St Croix) for one of the best Caribbean beaches for swimming, snorkeling, or simply taking in the amazing views and the warmth of the sun’s rays.

I’ve spent abundant time in Hawaii and the Caribbean , and still, nothing beats the beaches in St Croix, St Thomas , and St John . There are more than enough spots to explore, so go to as many as you like and find your favorite – we all have one!

3. Even Better Snorkeling Opportunities

A person sitting on the edge of a white sandy beach, looking out at calm turquoise waters, with snorkeling fins beside them.

The underwater life on St. Croix is in a class of its own. The island has undergone huge measures to preserve its coral reefs and marine wildlife . Buck Island Reef, right off shore, is even a protected national park .

The results are exceptional snorkeling sites that literally submerge you into another world – one alive with diverse and colorful corals, tropical fishes, octopus, squid, rays, starfish, turtles, and countless other majestic sea creatures!

The best snorkeling locations here have crystal clear waters and untouched land.

It goes without saying that St. Croix is a must-visit if you can’t get enough of ocean adventures. Avid snorkelers hop from one beach to the other and explore each shore for its hidden treasures.

For instance, you might dive “The Wall” at Cane Bay , venture to the underwater trail at Buck Island, discover the shipwrecks at Butler Bay, or snorkel alongside the Frederiksted pier – just to name a few!

For less experienced sea-lovers, there are plenty of shallow areas that are equally satisfying to snorkel in and spot a variety of exciting sea life.

4. Buck Island Reef National Monument

View of Buck Island in the distance from St Croix USVI

This little slice of paradise alone makes visiting St Croix worth your time. It also happens to be my favorite thing that I’ve ever done in the US Virgin Islands.

Buck Island Reef National Monument is located off the coast of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

The monument comprises two distinct areas – the coral reef itself and the surrounding waters of Turtle Bay (known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!).

The reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including turtles, fish, and coral. Snorkeling in this famous reef is the #1 thing to do in St Croix ! It beats out even the best snorkeling in St Thomas or St John .

Efforts are underway to protect and restore the reef, ensuring that it will remain a popular destination for generations to come. There’s even an overview look you can hike to for unique views atop this incredible island.

As I’ve mentioned above, this is my favorite activity in St Croix. I’ve not only done it once, but make a point to visit every time I go.

The only way to visit is by tour – I recommend Big Beard Adventure Tours , which I’ve been using since I was a child. They hold a special place in my heart when it comes to my St Croix memories!

Curiosity-inspiring landmarks sit at almost every turn on St. Croix, from the ruins of the sugar mills to the seven proudly waving flags that the island has been ruled under.

During my time on St. Croix, I’ve come to realize that there is a riveting story behind every event, custom, and monument, portraying a rich history that you can’t just find anywhere.

History enthusiasts will delight in visiting St Croix's towns which boast of unique colonial architecture - the remnants of the Danish influence on St. Croix.

Christiansted is well-known for being the early stomping grounds of the famous Alexander Hamilton , who spent his childhood years in the town.

The Salt River Bay is known as the location where Christopher C olumbus first arrived on the island in 1493. With a wealth of fascinating tidbits like these, exploring the engrossing past of St. Croix USVI is an attraction you can’t miss out on!

The island was originally inhabited by the Ciboney, Carib, and Arawak peoples. The first European settlers arrived in the 1600s, and the island changed hands several times between the French, Danish, and English before finally becoming part of the United States in 1917.

The history of St. Croix is fascinating. Today, St. Croix is a melting pot of cultures, and its residents are proud of their heritage.

View through a colorful, narrow alley with bright orange and pink walls leading to a weathered doorway

St. Croix is a melting pot of African, American, and European influence . Its culture is a huge part of the island's charm.

Picture it– Rhythmic music called quelbe accompanies dancers dressed in the colorful pattern madras as they perform quadrille, a traditional, British-inherited dance. Annual Carnival celebrations attract flocks of people who join joyful troupes of costumed participants.

Dancers on stilts dressed as “moko jumbies”, spirits fabled to protect the people from evil, tower over you at special events.

Cultural artisans create jewelry, woodwork, paintings, clothing, and a variety of other crafts that capture unique themes of the island . Culture is everywhere on St. Croix, so much that it effortlessly becomes a cherished part of you that stays long after you've left the island!

Elevated view of a coastal town with red-roofed buildings, lush trees, and multiple sailboats anchored in the clear blue sea.

My, only the scent of Crucian cuisine is enough to make your mouth water! Whether you're stopping at a roadside food truck (highly recommend), or dining at one of the many fanciful restaurants, prepare to be carried away by delicious, savory, meals.

The food on St. Croix is also a blend of different influences, however it is always rooted in the distinctive Caribbean flavor.

Tip: You'll love walking along the Christiansted Boardwalk and conveniently exploring St. Croix's cuisine right in this one strip. It is lined with bars and restaurants, a diverse array of selections from fresh seafood, to brick-oven pizza, to burgers and local dishes, all with a perfect view of the ocean!

Several local events are essential to experiencing the cuisine on St. Croix, including “Mango Melee”, “Taste of St. Croix”, and the Agricultural Fair.

If you happen to visit during one of the months when such an event is held, be sure to immerse yourself in the experience and support local vendors as they share a variety of incredibly satisfying dishes.

8. Unique Adventures

Dirt footpath through coastal grassland leading to a secluded beach with waves hitting the shore under a cloudy sky.

Last but certainly not least, St. Croix is an amazing destination due to the endless adventure! There's no shortage of activities that you can do here on any day, and once you get started, the fun never ends.

The island is home to bioluminescent bays , where kayak tours are held to experience floating atop water shimmering with glowing organisms.

If you prefer land adventure, try out hiking, horseback riding, ziplining, and ATVs ! For a mixture of land and sea, and one of the most unique activities to do on St. Croix, I suggest hiking the trail to the island’s hidden tide pools .

You don't have to look hard and you will easily find opportunities to scratch that itch for adventure and thrill on your trip to St. Croix!

9. St Croix is a US Territory

Yes! St Croix is a US territory . That means US citizens will not need a passport to enter or exit St Croix - or any of the US Virgin Islands .

This makes travel just a little simpler for you and your crew.

Is St Croix Safe 2024?

Is St. Croix safe in 2024? St Croix is a safe island, overall and is considered a safe and popular tourist destination for Americans. The majority of crime in St Croix will be petty theft, so it's best to take normal precautions:

✅ Lock your room doors ✅ Do not keep valuables in your car ✅ Stay together; do not venture alone at night ✅ Stay away from unfamiliar and unknown areas

Overall, the USVI is safe.

What is St Croix Known For?

St Croix is well-known for its history, culture, cuisine, and beaches! What more could you want in a town?

St. Croix is a beautiful island with a rich history and culture. The cuisine of St. Croix is diverse and flavorful, and the island's beaches are simply breathtaking. With that being said, St. Croix has something to offer everyone, and it is truly a paradise.

Visiting St Croix: Things to Know

St croix passport requirements.

US Citizens do not need a passport to visit St Croix! This makes it a convenient and easy destination.

You also don't need a passport to visit the other US Virgin Islands, so hop on a ferry or hopper plane and check out St Thomas and St John as well.

Christiansted and Frederiksted

Is St Croix Worth Visiting for Christiansted Harbor

There are two main cities in St Croix. Christiansted and Frederiksted are both popular destinations and hold many things to do, places to see, and places to stay in St Croix!

Christiansted is known as the more lively downtown area. It's filled with fine dining, excursions, bars, and shopping!

Frederiksted is smaller and quieter but filled with history, museums, and adventure.

US Virgin Islands Require Reef Safe Sunscreen

USVI Law requires you to use reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine wildlife and coral reefs around the islands! Protect the land and plan ahead. Pro tip: Pack your reef-safe sunscreen before, as it can be expensive on the island!

Avoid oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene.  Check verified sources like savethereef.org or the National Ocean Service before purchasing your sunscreen for any Caribbean islands.

A Few of Things to Do in St Croix

Here are some notable St Croix things to do:

✅ Excursion to Buck Island Reef National Monument

Voted a top-rated activity in St Croix, you can't forget to plan an excursion to Buck Island Reef National Monument.

There are tour companies that will take you out to snorkel around this famous reef, hike on the beach, or dive. You can go alone, but it will require an anchoring permit , so be sure to plan ahead.

I recommend Big Beard Adventure Tours , which I've been using since I was a child.

✅ Play All Day at Rainbow Beach

Rainbow Beach is located on the west end of St Croix and is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Snorkeling is awesome; you can choose so many water sports to stay busy all day.

Sea Sports St Croix offers a full-day package with unlimited use of kayaks, paddle boards, floats, and snorkel gear.

This area was once the center of the island's sugar industry, and today it is a popular tourist destination.

In addition, there are several museums and art galleries in the district, making it a great place to learn about the island's history and culture. Whether you're interested in architecture, history, or art, the Frederiksted Historic District is definitely worth a visit.

Where to Stay: St Croix Resorts

All Inclusive

St. Croix, one of the US Virgin Islands, may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of all-inclusive resorts.

In other words, you won't find St Croix all-inclusive resorts on this island like you do in the Bahamas and St Lucia .

While this may disappoint some travelers who prefer the convenience and predictability of all-inclusive accommodations, it actually offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and cuisine fully.

There are plenty of charming small hotels and bed and breakfasts that allow guests to experience the authentic St Croix lifestyle while enjoying breathtaking scenery and a more intimate atmosphere.

From exploring historic sites to indulging in savory local dishes, St. Croix offers an unforgettable vacation experience that cannot be found in a generic all-inclusive resort.

How to Get to St Croix

There are a few cities you can fly direct to Saint Croix from, like Charlotte and Miami. Most flights will take you to STX, St Thomas's airport. St Thomas is the main USVI and home to the capital, Charlotte Amalie.

When you arrive at St Thomas Airport you can take a hopper plane into St Croix.

St Croix Airport

The Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (HERA) is located towards the bottom middle of the island, about 7-9 miles from Frederiksted and Christiansted. You can pick up a rental car from the hotel, or easily grab a taxi from the airport to your hotel destination!

If you're able to fly direct from the US to HERA, St Croix is worth visiting simply for the ease of travel! Plus, not needing a passport makes it even quicker. Christiansted Harbor Seaplane Base is located right in downtown Christiansted, so it's a great option if you want to land and be as close as possible to your hotel if you plan to stay in Christiansted.

How to Get Around St Croix

It's easy to get around St Croix ; there are two main options to choose from, rental cars and taxis!

Rental Cars

Renting a car in St Croix is very affordable! You can find rental cars for $50-$100 per day, depending on the size of vehicle you're looking for. Car rentals are the most efficient way to get around St Croix and it's highly recommended that you do!

Don't forget they drive on the LEFT side of the road!!

There are many off-the-beaten-path beaches and adventures around St Croix. It's such a large island, you don't want to rely on taxis to get everywhere!

You also may have a hard time finding a taxi in those more secluded areas! Keep your freedom and enjoy convenience with your own rental car during your stay.

➡️ Book your rental car here through Expedia! PRO TIP: Small islands have fewer rental cars! Reserve your car ASAP!

Taxis are easy to catch throughout St Croix, particularly at hotels, popular beaches, and the two downtowns, Christiansted and Frederiksted.

Taxis in St Croix charge per person, so traveling with a group will be more costly! You can view the current taxi rates here.

The Best Things to Do in St. Croix

It’s one of the three isles that make up the u.s. virgin islands, and though st. croix is the largest—measuring 218 square kilometers (84 square miles)—it’s the least visited of the trio. perhaps that’s because much of the island has been set aside as parkland, which means fewer tourist hubs and more space dedicated to natural wonders, including pristine beaches and primo snorkeling and diving. but st. croix also boasts many excellent historical sites. at various times it was controlled by spain, britain, france, the netherlands and denmark; the latter’s influence is the most visible in the architecture of st. croix’s charming capital city of christiansted, on the northern coast. frederiksted, on the western point of the island, is a busy port surrounded by some significant colonial attractions, with a restored sugar estate and an 18th-century fort being among the most noteworthy. here you’ll also find a family-run rum distillery and many restaurants and shops..

Flights to St. Croix, VI (STX)

As you set foot on the island of St. Croix, you are struck by that unique sound. It's called Quelbe — the vocal and instrumental style of the Virgin Islands' folk music which traces its ancestry to Africa and Europe. It helps you start getting into the rhythm of St. Croix as you begin to let your hair down and relax.

As you drive around St. Croix, especially through Christiansted and Frederiksted, you will experience the narrow roads and closely spaced historic buildings showcasing historic Danish architecture. You can also visit one of the many Danish stone sugar mills that dot the island, or Whim Great House, a restored plantation. Due to her rich and varied history under the rule of no fewer than seven flags (including Dutch, English, French, Spanish, Knights of Malta, Danish and American), the true nature of St. Croix is one of quiet cultural and relaxed encounters.

As the largest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix offers endless opportunities for hiking, ecotourism and other natural pursuits. You can also choose from horseback riding, playing golf on one of the island's three scenic golf courses and scuba diving. St. Croix has great diversity of dives for all skill levels and is one of only a few places in the Caribbean where you can dive a reef, wreck, pier and a wall, in a single destination. Shopping is also a dream because you are allowed up to $1600 duty free shopping, the highest in the Caribbean.

BABY BAY BEACH

St thomas 2020, travel with mitsugirly, mitsugirlys cruise ( and land) adventures, st croix 2024 day 8, day 8: boat excursion, the most beautiful beach, snorkeling frenzy, and panic shopping kinda day., the hubby beat us up (not physically, but in time) and was sipping on coffee before 6:30am. we had a hard rain early this morning and i wondered what today would bring with the storm headed our way. would we even get to do our buck island tour i was already kicking myself for not booking earlier., the ocean looked a little stirred up today and waves were higher. this might end up being a bust..

travel to st croix 2022

But as of now...it was bright and sunny out.

travel to st croix 2022

Since our tour wasn't until 12:30pm today, with a meeting time of 12noon, we had plenty of morning time to hang out. I decided to start some laundry even though we still had several days before we left this beautiful island. I kept watch of the wind, tides, water and temps closely at this point with the storm headed our way. Would our tour get cancelled because of it?

travel to st croix 2022

I made egg salad sandwiches for breakfast. Ok, ok...I did change it up again this morning. Karl has never had one before. He thought we were strange. He refused to eat. "Mayonnaise mixed with smashed up eggs? On bread? That's just weird" he said. Um, Karl...have you never had deviled eggs for Thanksgiving before? He had not. This kid needs to live a little I tell ya! Ok, that's just more for me then. He decided to warm up his left over pizza...you know, the one he claimed he would be able to eat all of it in an entire setting? Eyes big. Stomach not.

I called big beards to make sure we were still on for today and we were. whew now i wasn't going to book for monday because that is when the cruise ships are in port normally. however, i was informed that since the tropical storm ernesto was headed our way, there would be no ships in port today and they would be doing their itinerary in reverse in hopes to miss the storm..

travel to st croix 2022

We packed up everything we needed for the day and headed out early. I wanted to go back to the store Karl had purchased his snorkel shirt at and get me one before our trip. It was a 30 minute drive to Christiansted from our place.

We arrived and parked at the historical parking lot again. hey, free is good right walking along the waterfront we would see multiple businesses already closed and boarding up their buildings..

travel to st croix 2022

Critters along the way over to Big Beards on the waterfront. Karl was amazed at the size of the Tarpon just hanging out.

travel to st croix 2022

We walked over to Big Beards and checked in with them. Yep, we were still on for today! You see I need multiple times of reassurance.

travel to st croix 2022

We still had some time of course so we went over to the store Karl had purchased his shirt at so that I could get one.

travel to st croix 2022

Then I hear "Hey can I wear your shirt? I forgot mine". Oh Karl...geesh. I suppose so since I have my other one on today.

Our excursion boat was off in the distance. it was different than the last time we were here. it was a sailboat last time and (if you remember that review) there were a bunch of girls on staff that would work really hard lifting the sails on it while the guys watched. this time, no sails. just all motor..

travel to st croix 2022

We waited on the dock in the shade. It was hot out...of course.

Here is where we are and where we are going:.

travel to st croix 2022

I decided I should probably use the restroom before getting on the boat and found that they shared the restroom with the restaurant next door. I also wanted to get some drinks to take with us. I had forgotten that Big Beards said you can bring your own drinks and snacks and they would provide the cooler to store things in. I got us all a drink but then they informed me that I needed to spend $10 to be able to use my credit card. Well then...I put everything back and headed out to see if anyone wanted anything else to bring that dollar amount up and by the time I returned, our boat was already here and ready for us to start loading. No worries, they said they would have drinks on the boat for us after snorkeling (water and punch and rum punch...even better).

travel to st croix 2022

We all piled onto the boat and the captain and crew started giving their speech.

travel to st croix 2022

He read us the rules: Don't try any TikTok challenges or act like you are jumping ship or falling off the boat. He told us a true story that some girls had done this and actually fell and the girls were fined $5000 for doing so.

"hold onto your hats because unless there's a head attached to it when going over board, we're not going back for it".

travel to st croix 2022

We had Mike as our Captain. Then there was Charlie, a girl, that was born in Wisconsin but raised here. She came around and talked to us for awhile. She was super nice. Then we had Simon on board with us as well to help.

travel to st croix 2022

After we got so far out, the captain announced that anyone who wanted to walk up on deck on the front of the boat could do so. But, you must hang on...it can get real bumpy up there.

travel to st croix 2022

Sakari immediately jumped up. Karl did not. He decided to stay put for the remainder of the ride.

travel to st croix 2022

Sakari always loves riding up front. It was definitely wavy and the boat was jumping waves and sometimes splashing really high up. We did not get wet though. The hubby was trying to get his hair wet. You know, that salt kissed wet look.

travel to st croix 2022

Some pics that Sakari took while up front:

travel to st croix 2022

Our first stop was going to be a Turtle Beach...the most beautiful beach in St Croix and the Caribbean they claimed. We would spend some time here "learning to snorkel" in the calm waters for awhile. Then after everyone was ready, we would head over to the National Snorkel Park for the real stuff.

Buck island turtle beach was in site now..

travel to st croix 2022

The boat stopped all of a sudden and everyone was looking around. There were dolphins! I completely missed it because it was on the opposite side of the boat and by the time I discovered what was going on, they were gone. Sakari said she didn't see them either and she was up front with a full view.

We have arrived.

travel to st croix 2022

The nice thing about this boat was it had steps on each side that you could just walk down and into the water. However, they can't pull right up to the beach so you would walk down the steps and drop into the water.

Turtle beach is absolutely gorgeous i'm not sure of its claim to fame of being the prettiest in the caribbean but it is beautiful..

travel to st croix 2022

We grabbed our snorkeling gear and off we went into the water to explore. I did notice there were a lot of barracuda 's in the area. Rather large ones actually.

travel to st croix 2022

Then there was this big fish I ran into while snorkeling. Scary!

travel to st croix 2022

There were plenty of fish to see in the area and lots of rocks. I liked snorkeling the area.

travel to st croix 2022

Then I started noticing blurry spots in the water. As my eyes focused, I noticed they were jellyfish. No worries, not the stinging kind but comb jellies . They are harmless but man there were A LOT! They were just everywhere. It was almost hard to get a clear picture of what I was trying to take a picture of because they were in the way. It's really hard to focus your camera on them because they are so clear. Here's an attempt of a close up one in my face.

travel to st croix 2022

Another swimming by in front of my camera (right above my name stamp). Of course Karl immediately freaked out but he wasn't close enough to shore to run out of the water. We assured him he was going to live. Sakari was fascinated by them and kept touching them. Ohhhh, they feel like jelly. Well, yep, they are "jelly" fish.

travel to st croix 2022

Some fish in the area: One eyed Butterfly fish, parrot fish, Juvenile French Angelfish, and a Mahogany Snapper .

travel to st croix 2022

A large black spotted Coney Grouper ...well actually there were 3 of them! (You'll see in my video)

More Comb Jellyfish but a little better picture:

travel to st croix 2022

Now this guy...he was HUGE! like I've never seen a Mutton Snapper this large before. We always see the small regular sized ones hanging out with the Grunts. But it was LARGE and there were several of them out in the deep water. He looks mean and mad. Just look at that face! (He's in the picture above too and look at the size of him compared to this large rock in the water)

travel to st croix 2022

They usually grow to around 20 inches with a maximum of 34.8 inches. They can weigh up to 15 pounds and live for around 40 years.

travel to st croix 2022

We went up and down the waters along the beach. It was a good time. On the way back we came across another Stingray .

travel to st croix 2022

The hubby and I decided to get out and walk to the end of the beach so that I could get more pictures of this beautiful area. The captain told us to make sure to stay within site so that we could see when it was time to leave. So we just walked to the curve as it went around the island.

travel to st croix 2022

The water was gorgeous. The beach was gorgeous. The sun was shining. Life is good.

travel to st croix 2022

We would see Ghost Crabs along the beach. They are super quick and really leery of people passing by. I waited for awhile for it to come back out to get a picture.

travel to st croix 2022

We walked past the boat and onto the other side of the beach. They had displays of conch shells up on the rocks by the trees. We were told no hiking because of the cactus and deadly trees in the area (manchineel trees ) . (Although I know there are tours that do hiking excursions here and we did see the entrance to the trail).

travel to st croix 2022

It was a little more rocky in the area by the beach too.

travel to st croix 2022

Some area's were not as bad.

travel to st croix 2022

The kids took off walking to explore.

travel to st croix 2022

When it was time to go, Captain Mike blew the conch horn for everyone to get back on board and we were heading to the snorkel trail.

They had a hose on the boat to rinse the salt water off with..

travel to st croix 2022

They passed out snorkel vest for everyone. I wish I would have gotten a picture of Karl's. It said "Married" on the front of it...which is funny because that is what the hubby's said last time we did this tour back in 2018. LOL Ours were plain and didn't say anything. The hubby was sad.

travel to st croix 2022

We were all on board and headed a short distance over to Buck Island Reef National Monument.

Like last time, sakari was complaining about having to wear a life vest. she likes to dive down and this prevents her from doing so. they told her it was the rules of the park and they could get fined if we didn't have them on. but, she was not required to inflate it if she didn't want to. karl trying to figure out how to put one on and where all the straps go...well that's an entirely different segment to this review i won't get into right now. 😉, captain mike told us how the kennedy's came to the island and loved this area so much that they declared this a national park., i n 1948, the government of the virgin islands established buck island and its surrounding reefs as a territorial park. in 1961, control of the island was transferred to the national park service, and later that year president john f. kennedy, in recognition of the need to preserve for scientific and educational interests “one of the finest marine gardens in the caribbean sea,” established buck island reef national monument by presidential proclamation (no. 3443). finally, on january 17, 2001, president william j. clinton expanded the monument’s size by 18,135 acres making it now 19,015 acres, that's a huge area captain mike said that buck island/turtle beach only takes up 1% of those 19,015 acres. can you imagine just how large this place is, we were told we were going out in two groups. we would head over to the trail with our group. we ended up in charlie's group. she held onto a rope with a life preserver on it. we were told the water is a bit choppy today and to be careful and aware of your surroundings because some of the coral is almost sticking out of the water..

travel to st croix 2022

There were a lot of Parrotfish and Barracuda 's in the area.

travel to st croix 2022

I remember when we were came here back in 2018 and I was so excited to come here for the reef. I had seen pictures online and it looked amazing. Then I remember feeling the disappointment once we came here because most of the coral was dead in the area. I kept thinking "Why do people say this is the best place to come and snorkel?" It looked like an ocean graveyard with all of the dead coral.

Well, i can tell you that not much has changed. there was still so much dead coral in the area and it still looked like a coral graveyard., within a decade of president kennedy establishing the area a protected marine park, it suffered several major coral disease outbreaks. they do not know the reason for the outbreaks. corals are just like humans. they can catch and spread diseases. this new disease, called white band disease, took over the reef and reduced the amount of living coral over 90%. since the early 1990's coral disease outbreaks have been more frequent and intense due to stress, which is caused by the warming temps of the water..

travel to st croix 2022

You can just see the devastation of the spread of this disease all around. They say it happened almost over night and it spread fast.

We had arrived to the "underwater trail". it is a shallow water lagoon that is protected by a barrier reef. it makes it the perfect place to snorkel because the waters are usually calm in this area. there are signs throughout the shallow water showing you which way to go and various names of coral and fish you will see., if you look closely, you will see that this area was filled with comb jellyfish as well. so many of them..

travel to st croix 2022

I captured a good picture of one here. Can you spot it?

travel to st croix 2022

Looking threw the water you could see them as well.

travel to st croix 2022

Once we made it to the beginning of the trail, Charlie instructed us where to go in. She told us to explore on our own as much as we'd like...then I believe she went back to the boat.

travel to st croix 2022

Now notice it says to only enter during gentle wave conditions...this was anything BUT gentle water conditions. It was so wavy that we were told not to lift our heads out of the water too often. You would definitely get smashed in the face by the waves and sometimes even taking on a gulp because it was so forceful.

travel to st croix 2022

As you move along the trail, it was like playing in an escape room and you had to search for the markers on the seafloor to know which way to go next. Every once in awhile you'd see a marker with an arrow and know to turn. Some were not so easy to find.

travel to st croix 2022

They would also have markers with names of fish on them. But, you wouldn't always see the fish hanging out in that area posing for you above the marker so those that do not know their fish like we do, would have no clue which fish it was referring to.

travel to st croix 2022

All of a sudden I noticed movement coming toward us...it was a very large school of blue surgeon fish. This was just like the last time we were here. There were quite a few of them circling the area. They are so amazing to see in groups like this. They must hang out in the area all the time.

travel to st croix 2022

We continued on in the trail of deadness (notice all the jellies in the second picture)

travel to st croix 2022

There was a few living coral here and there, but really not much to see.

travel to st croix 2022

We had come to the end of the trail. I did not see Sakari or Karl during this little adventure of getting bashed around by the waves, smashed in the face and it was similar to riding a rollercoaster as you bobbed up and down while you kicked full force to stay away from the coral and make your way around the trail. I was almost positive that Karl had turned back.

travel to st croix 2022

My camera was really struggling to take pictures because of all the jellyfish. Just look at this!!!

travel to st croix 2022

We decided to hang out around the outside of the grotto to explore a bit. I honestly thought there was probably more alive coral outside of it than inside.

travel to st croix 2022

Then along came Sakari and Karl. They had made it through the grotto. I have to say I was completely shocked. Karl was super proud of himself. I tried to tell him I thought he went back because of how rough the water was but he was gleaming with joy about doing it (although admits he was a little nervous at first).

I spotted a couple of scrawled filefish and followed them around for awhile..

travel to st croix 2022

These fish are very rarely seen probably because they have the ability to change colors to match their surroundings. On the sandy bottom, they can turn white to match the sand. When swimming in deeper blue area, they change to blue. They can change from yellow to brown.

More Scrawled Filefish over here too:

I feel lucky if I get to see one snorkeling or diving, but this time, to see this many...it was a treat!

However, this was not a treat...it was scary:.

And a little too close for my comfort.

Several parrot fish :.

Just a few more pictures before heading back to the boat. I think we've seen about all we are going to see and the water was just so rough and pushing us far away from the boat. Sakari and Karl had already given up and went back on board. I know my foot was hurting at this point and I wouldn't be able to kick this forcefully much longer. The hubby kept checking on me and asking if I was ok. I was ok, but about to give up.

On the swim back to the boat, there were Parrotfish everywhere.

travel to st croix 2022

We had made it back to the boat finally:

travel to st croix 2022

As others were getting back on and climbing the steps, I was busy watching the fish below, including another Spotted Trunkfish .

travel to st croix 2022

Here's a video of our day at Turtle Beach and Buck Island snorkel trail. I hope you enjoy it.

We were told in order to get up the stairs to the boat, you turn around and sit on the bottom step and ease yourself up to the next and go up backwards on your butt., we all washed the salt water off and they also had a leave in conditioner for your hair and not only did it smell fabulous but made our hair easy to comb, we were all safely back on the boat, yes even me without any mishaps, and the weather was changing rapidly. it was now very cloudy and the captain said that a storm was about to roll in..

travel to st croix 2022

The staff was preparing rum punch and when they were done, I walked over to get one. After I sat down, Charlie told me "You can't have that yet. We have to wait until we get out of the National Park". Well...then don't bring it out and put it in front of my face then. I mean what am I supposed to do now...as I'm holding my cup of rum punch. Is the National Park Rum Punch Patrol in the area? I mean I'm thirsty after all that snorkeling and gulping salt water....***turns head, acts guilty, looks to see if anyone is watching, takes big gulp, hides cup***

A lady comes in with her spouse and says "we seen the biggest shark out there". um...where the heck were you she pointed out a ways and said "it was twice as big as me and gray" the captain said it was probably a lemon shark if it was that big., as we started to pull out, captain mike told us we should all probably sit on the inside seats of the boat. a storm was about to be chasing us into port...as he pointed over toward the island and behind us., you could tell that it was really storming over that way. one minute you could see where our house was and the next you could not..

travel to st croix 2022

They started passing out the Rum Punch...finally. Karl could not wait. I think he had 3 of them, I had 6, hubby had 4 and Sakari had a virgin.

As we continued on, they would come around and pour more into our cups. i was real thirsty i tell ya. at one point, they poured some into sakari's cup and she blankly starred at me. i blankly starred back. she took a sip. she liked it. lol honestly, you could not really taste much rum in it. i mean i had 6 and wasn't even feeling it....other than feeling thirsty still. salt water really makes you thirsty. i was replenishing...don't judge..

travel to st croix 2022

Charlie came by at one point and pointed at Sakari and said "Is that alcohol?" Sakari gulped it down and said "no" and got up to get another. 😂

I headed off to the restroom and came back with a souvenir:.

travel to st croix 2022

Yea it was bleeding pretty badly. The family thought I was gonna bleed out from all the blood. I started moaning and pouting and holding my hand as if it was about to fall off. So much pain and agony. I was getting pampered by the family. They felt sorry for me..."Let me get you another drink!" Yea, that should help take the pain away. "Do you want anything else mom?" "Um, I think I need another drink."

Then after the bleeding stopped i showed them. they were like oh my gosh it's not that bad. (it really wasn't but i liked the pampering and attention i got from it). game over i guess. it was good while it lasted., off in the distance...more rain and it was looking bad. i was thinking the rest of the day was going to be a wash...literally..

travel to st croix 2022

The hubby headed down to the restroom and I yelled "Be careful! It bites!" His reaction....really Kim, really? Sigh...he just didn't believe me I guess. I showed him my now non-bleeding hand and reminded him of what door locks to restrooms can do to you.

Here's my video of our day at Buck Island. Enjoy!

Once we made it back to the dock, it was back to being sunny again and no rain. believe it or not, karl did not puke once on this trip. progress, we headed back down the waterfront. we stopped to see more tarpon and the sugar mill..

travel to st croix 2022

Then back across the historical grounds and to the car we went.

travel to st croix 2022

As we got ready to leave, I got this message on the dash:

travel to st croix 2022

It was the first time we had ever seen it. I PROMISE I was ok to drive. Those six drinks did not do anything to me. I'm as sober as they come. They were weak drinks. However, I guess the car was concerned. 😄

We were all hungry and i had read about a place that had awesome food. i looked at my mapsme and seen that it wasn't too far from christiansted and more toward the middle of the island heading toward frederiksted. we were going to see if we could locate le reine chicken shack..

travel to st croix 2022

When we found it, the place was popping. I guess it is a great spot all the locals go to. There's a bar on one side and the chicken place on the other but the restaurant area was all under a roof together. Most people were ordering take out.

travel to st croix 2022

The hubby and I ordered the 1/2 chicken plate that came with 2 Johnny Cakes and I ordered a side of Cole Slaw.

travel to st croix 2022

Karl got the baked Macaroni and cheese, and the 1/2 chicken plate with rice and beans...because the huge meal alone wasn't good enough for him.

Sakari always liked to try new things and she ordered the salmon balls, which she ended up not liking at all. i ate two of them, which was all i could handle of the fishy taste, and gave her part of my chicken instead..

travel to st croix 2022

The chicken was fabulous! But man was it a lot of food! The total price for everything was $71.22, which was a little more than I expected it to be because the sign on the wall said their 1/2 chicken plate was the special of the day for $10. Looking at my receipt, I don't even understand the pricing they came up with. Either way, the food was good and we walked out with our bellies full.

travel to st croix 2022

On our way back home we decided it would probably be a good idea to stop by the grocery store to get some things just in case this storm was a little worse than what they were predicting. When we got there, it was crowded. Everyone was walking out with carts full of water and supplies. I'm over here like "What the heck do I get?" ❓ I searched the isles trying to see what we could possibly need during a storm. I ended up with water, juice, lunch meat, bread, chips, and some bagels and cream cheese. Yea, you could tell I haven't been in a storm as bad as they were predicting I guess. ⛈️ We would also notice that the Red Cross team was already here and stocking up. Now I'm starting to worry! 😯

We arrived back home and it was still sunny out at this point..

travel to st croix 2022

I put our things away, showered and it was time to relax for the night. I believe everyone was in bed by around 7:30pm. You could tell all that kicking while snorkeling and fighting the waves today had worn us all out. 💤💤
