Latest live A1 traffic news

A1 and a1(m) traffic news and real time updates; get the latest info on a1 traffic delays, roadworks, accidents and snow.

A1 (M) motorway

Even though the A1 is just an A road, it is still one of the most important, most busy routes in the UK. At 410 miles in length it certainly has the scale of a motorway, linking together two capitals in the form of London and Edinburgh, as well as many other towns and cities besides.

Inevitably, the A1’s length makes delays almost inevitable, and these are only made worse by the fact that the A1 consists of just two lanes. So if you’re travelling along some (or heaven forbid, all) of it, you could save yourself a lot of time by staying up to date with the latest traffic news and accident updates available on this page.

• What is a smart motorway?

With roadworks seemingly a permanent fixture on the A1, and with the usual mix of incidents and traffic jams to contend with, it’s far from likely that you’ll complete your journey without any delays. And your odds get even worse when the weather intervenes, especially when it snows. But by using the following information, you should be able to improve your odds…

Below you can find all the latest A1 and A1(M) traffic information via our specially built Twitter feed, which draws real-time alerts from the Highways Agency, official police accounts and other traffic news feeds. We’ve also got a live traffic map so you can pick out incidents as they happen, and there’s a list of important intersections as well...

A1 and A1M live traffic map

The A1 passes through North London and over the M25, then keeps heading North past Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Letchworth, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark, Doncaster, Leeds, Harrogate, York, Ripon, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, Alnwick and Berwick.

•  M25 traffic news

The map below shows live updates on the current problem areas of the A1 and A1M for roadworks, accidents or general congestion causing delays on the road...

A1 and A1(M) History

Dick Turpin and his ilk were the cause of many early hold-ups on the A1 back in the days of stagecoach travel (when it was known as the Great North Road), but you’ll be extremely unlucky to be accosted by a highwayman today. There are plenty of reports of theft of goods and fuel from parked up lorries in certain sections of the A1, but the average motorist can generally expect safe passage.

•  M6 traffic news

However there are still plenty of (often closed) coaching inns along the route that have links to the early days of turnpike travel – including some famous ones like the Ram Jam Inn between Stamford and Grantham.

The A1 was first named as such in 1921 by the Ministry of Transport, but it basically follows a North-South route that has been documented since Roman times.

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the A1M

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the A1M (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the A1M will be reinstated shortly.

If the images are not updating, please check back later.

Enter a custom name for this camera if required, then click the route you wish to save it to.

Are you sure you wish to remove this camera from ALL routes? If you only wish to remove this camera from a specific route please Cancel, go to the Route in question and remove it from there.

After decades of promises that have not resulted in concrete action, the future of the project is once again uncertain, with the new Labour Government yet to commit to plans to create a dual carriageway between Morpeth and Ellingham.

The previous Conservative Government did give the green light to the proposals earlier this year, but this only came after five delays and after the Tories had called the General Election and with the party languishing behind in the polls.

Speaking at Tuesday's meeting of Northumberland County Council's cabinet, Conservative leaders spoke of the need to dual the A1 and receive commitments from Government on other key infrastructure projects for the county. These included the Blyth Relief Road and plans to improve key roundabouts amid increasing traffic caused by new developments.

Council leader Glen Sanderson said: "There is a huge desire to get on with dualling the A1. I think it is fair to say that local people have been greatly disappointed with the lack of clear ambition by this Government to dual the A1 and dual it quickly.

"We also have the Blyth Relief Road. It is incredibly important that we get on and deliver this.

"We are working as if we are going to get the Government support for this really important project and we will continue to be committed to it. We need to make sure that the crucial funding for our infrastructure is there.

"We are meeting the new MPs shortly and we will be working together with them for the residents of Northumberland .

"It is essential we write to the Secretary of State about funding for roads, including the bigger, more strategic and important sites and keep pressure on Government to get National Highways to push those forward as a key and urgent scheme."

Deputy leader Coun Richard Wearmouth said improvements to roundabouts would be needed if the county was to meet its new housing targets. The Government has proposed increasing the county's housing target by 222% in a bid to end the country's housing crisis.

Coun Wearmouth added: "We will be making the case for dualling the A1 as well as improvements to the Seaton Burn and Moor Farm roundabouts, which will be crucial to delivering the housing. Without that, we will not be able to accommodate the housing."

The North East Combined Authority is also committed to the A1 project. Papers for the CA's cabinet on Tuesday stated an ambitious target of dualling the route between Morpeth and Ellingham by 2030 and all the way to Scotland by 2040. However, both projects require external Government funding, which is yet to be confirmed.

Responding to the comments made by the Conservatives, Northumberland Labour leader Coun Scott Dickinson said: "It's the pot calling the kettle black. The Conservatives promised the A1 would be dualled for more than 10 years.

"It took 14 years and they delivered nothing. We had Prime Ministers and Chancellors come at the last three elections and say they would dual the A1.

"People aren't fools, and neither are we. We need to be realistic about the current position and make the case again.

"The public finances are in such a state that we don't know what will be committed to delivering. I do hold hope, because growth is a key objective and the A1 is a key growth project.

"I along with the North East mayor (Kim McGuinness) have said we will lobby for the investment in infrastructure that we need."

Commuters face more travel misery as further rain and flooding has blocked railway lines and a major motorway.

Meanwhile, the A421 in Bedfordshire is closed for the fifth day due to the flash flooding on Sunday night. Several other roads surrounding Bedford have also closed.

A group of 35 campers were evacuated in Northamptonshire after a caravan park in Yarwell flooded.

Fast-flowing water on the road in Birmingham trapped a BMW driver yesterday, while some roads in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, are also waterlogged.

Train delays after tree falls on railway

Flooding is not the only woe on the railways today – a tree blocked the railway in Suffolk, causing disruption to Greater Anglia passengers.

It has since been removed and the lines have reopened between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, but the coast is not clear until service recovers back to normal.

And that might not be until 4pm.

The blockade means trains are queueing, so cancellations, delays of up to 20 minutes or revisions are still possible.

Greater Anglia tickets can be used on selected alternative trains.

The London Underground Northern line is suspended between Finchley Central and High Barnet due to a faulty train.

This is causing severe delays between Finchley Central and Camden Town.

The rest of the line has minor delays, the latest TfL travel status update shows.

Motorists warned not to drive through floodwater

The rear boot of a submerged car is seen on the A421 dual carriageway road after it was flooded following heavy rain in Bedfordshire.

Kate Marks, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, said: ‘Environment Agency teams continue to be out on the ground, supporting local authorities in responding to surface water flooding.

‘We urge people to plan their journeys carefully, follow the advice of local emergency services on the roads and not to drive through flood water – it is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car.

‘People should check their flood risk, sign up for free flood warnings and keep up to date with the latest situation as well as following @EnvAgency on X for the latest flood updates.’

Some trains out of King’s Cross still delayed after heavy flooding

Trains between Peterborough in the east Midlands and London King’s Cross are still delayed because of flooding.

Elsewhere, the Marston Vale line in Bedfordshire, which operates services between Bedford and Bletchley, is suspended until Monday because of standing water on the track.

All lines were blocked between Bicester North and Banbury in Oxfordshire, with disruption expected until 3pm.

Delays on M25 after crash in Surrey

Traffic has stopped on the M25 in Surrey after a smash at junction J10.

The crash happened on the clockwise carriageway at Wisley Interchange at about 1pm.

Traffic appears held in both directions on approach to the interchange as well as on the A3 due to an unrelated exit ramp closure after flooding.

M25 exit ramp closes after flooding

Heavy rain and flooding closed the exit ramp on the M25 in Surrey.

However, the road remains open as usual and traffic appears largely unaffected.

It comes after the Met Office issued a weather warning for heavy rain in England, which as submerged roads, railways and even a football stadium .

National Highways tells curious people to stay away from A421

Tankers removing water at the A421 in Bedfordshire where the road has been closed for fifth day after flooding.

The highways authority hit out at nosey people after the A421 flooding and closure for a fifth day has dominated headlines.

It asked members of the public to stay away from the area so that work can continue to reopen the carriageway.

We are working around the clock to tackle the significant rainfall on the A421. We understand people are curious but request that members of the public continue to support us by staying away from the area so our work to resolve the issue can continue to progress at pace. — National Highways (@NationalHways) September 27, 2024

No reopening date has been confirmed, but it is set to remain shut at least today.

What roads look like in Hitchin after flooding

One of the areas where some roads have been flooded is Hitchin in Hertfordshire.

Around 20 residents were evacuated after homes were flooded on Green Lane, the fire service said.

It comes after the Met Office issued weather warnings as further heavy rain is set to soak roads and railways and bring possible flash floods.

Southern passengers in Surrey have been warned of disruption after flooding blocked the railway between Caterham and Purley.

All lines are blocked after heavy flooding on the railway at Whyteleafe.

National Rail said disruption is expected until midday.

What is happening on the M5?

Trapped drivers on the M5 after flooding.

In case you missed it, part of the M5 near Bristol turned into a mini river after the downpours caused flash flooding in the early hours of the morning.

Three drivers were rescued from stranded vehicles, the fire service said.

The motorway was closed both ways, wreaking havoc on the rush hour commute.

Now the carriageway has reopened southbound between J14 Falfield and J15 to the M4.

But it’s not all clear yet for those heading north as that direction remains shut between J16 Almondsbury and J14 so that trapped cars and debris can be recovered and cleared.

Footage shows several vehicles trapped in the floodwater.

Flooding hits Chiltern Railway trains at Banbury

The railway line used by Chiltern Railway trains has been blocked again after heavy rain and further flooding between Banbury and Bicester North .

Trains could be cancelled, delayed by up to half an hour or the schedule revised, with disruption expected to last at least until 3pm today.

It comes after railways on the Chiltern Mail Line in the area were submerged in floodwater on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, buses replace Chiltern Railway trains between London Marylebone and Aylesbury until 3.35pm today due to emergency cable repairs.

Delays on Thameslink trains through London St Pancras

The railway line has reopened after a passenger was taken ill on a train at Farringdon.

However, Thameslink trains between London St Pancras International and Blackfriars could still run 10 minutes behind schedule.

Trains are moving again, but disruption could last until 10am as service recovers fully, National Rail said.

Driving in wet weather and on flooded roads

Environment Agency flood warnings in England on Friday.

There is never a good time for flooding. It can be particularly dangerous on roads and motorways and hit suddenly after heavy rain.

Flooding is expected in 66 areas across England, while flooding is possible in further 120 locations. The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for rain .

If caught in downpours, drivers should slow down and leave more space between vehicles .

What to do if the road is flooded?

  • Driving through it can be very dangerous and damaging, so if in doubt, do not enter it
  • If you decide to go through it, drive slowly and be mindful of aquaplaning if the steering feels light
  • Don’t stop in the floodwater because this could be more damaging and leave you stranded
  • If you suffer a breakdown after wet conditions, don’t open the bonnet of the car while waiting for help to avoid getting the electrical system wet
  • Use dipped headlights if visibility is severely reduced

List of flooded roads in Bedfordshire where A421 remains closed

A421 flooded in Marston moretaine, Bedfordshire, after heavy rain and flooding as the road remains closed for fifth day.

Yet another Met Office weather warning brings more flooding misery in Bedfordshire, where several roads surrounding Bedford are waterlogged.

  • A6 – It is partially blocked due to flooding on the A6 The Great Ouse Way southbound from Mill Road to A600 Clapham Road
  • A6 Paula Radcliffe Way – Further flooding on Paula Radcliffe Way northbound from A600 Clapham Road to the Oakley Turn Off
