Tom Cruise performs 'epic stunt' at Olympics closing ceremony

The Olympics closing ceremonies have always served as a nice sendoff for one of the world's biggest sporting events. However, this year's formalities had something extra special on display as well: Tom Cruise.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the legendary actor and stuntman would be performing an "epic stunt" as part of the closing ceremonies.

According to reports , Cruise would rappel into Paris' Stade de France , during the closing ceremonies. That would be followed by a pre-recorded video of Cruise skydiving onto the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles. That report is accurate now in hindsight.

Cruise, 62, is known for taking stunts to the next level, and given that Los Angeles will be hosting the 2028 Olympics , it was assumed that someone representing the city would be in attendance to take the Olympic flag, as is tradition. Here's how the stunt went down live.

Cruise's stunt

The 62-year-old rappelled down from the top of the Stade de France, greeting Olympians after landing safely.

We then witnessed a surprise appearance from Simone Biles at the closing ceremony, playing a part in the passing of the Olympic flag from Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

The two gave the Olympic flag to Cruise who rode a motorcycle in a pre-filmed sequence that ended with the actor soaring above Los Angeles in a skydiving stunt.

Cruise 's sequences of increasing danger would make most people's hearts drop, but it's just another day on the job for the veteran. Like a true daredevil, he seems to revel in the face of peril, all with a pearly-white smile on his face. So how does he do it? It comes with a lot of time, preparation, and maybe an inherited gene that prevents you from feeling fear. Cruise's storied history of audacious stunt work proves it.

Cruise took a little break from filming the latest entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise to deliver a PSA about, what else, the importance of seeing movies in the cinema. In the footage taken for CinemaCon, the actor casually sits on the body of a bi-plane flying over the canyons of South Africa. By the end of the clip, he stands up before the plane dives away, tilting a whole 90 degrees with Cruise still strapped in. Is he okay? Did he just bend the laws of physics? Maybe after you’ve gripped onto the outside of a cargo jet (more on that below), a stunt like this is relatively easy. In any case, his insurance must be wild.

Okay, so Cruise nor the entire cast of rookie pilots actually flew the planes we see in the legacy sequel, but they experienced the next best thing in the passenger seat. During the first Top Gun movie, he threw up in his oxygen mask the first time he experienced the brutal forces of extreme flight. Nevertheless, he persisted. According to the movie’s aerial stunt coordinator Kevin LaRosa II, the cast went through a three-month boot camp to mitigate the effects of air sickness, building up from smaller planes to F-18s. Like Maverick himself, Cruise took the driver’s seat behind the scenes, as the training process was “built in and heavily driven” by him.

Sensing a theme here? Cruise loves to take flight in and out of the passenger seat, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the infamous plane stunt, in which Ethan Hunt hangs on for dear life to the side of Airbus 400 as it takes off. Cruise endured speeds of over a hundred knots and 1,000 feet in height for real — visual effects were only used to scrub out the wires keeping him in place.

Cruise’s antics stunned not only audiences but the flabbergasted crew. “When he wants to do something, he’ll figure out a way to do it,” director of photography Robert Elswit told The Hollywood Reporter . “He’s the most obsessive artist. … If it couldn’t actually be Tom on the plane, I think he wouldn’t want the sequence in the movie. What inside of him makes it possible for anybody to do that kind of shit — and not be scared shitless? He loves it.”

Zero gravity flight in The Mummy

Our dearly departed Dark Universe never got off the ground thanks to this reviled flop — but what it did give us was Cruise and his co-star Annabelle Wallis getting tossed around like ragdolls in a nosediving plane. Cruise wouldn’t accept a green screen moment if he was strapped to a chair and forced into it like he’s in A Clockwork Orange , so he opted instead to shoot 64 takes of the plane crash sequence in zero gravity. Filmed over the course of four flights in two days, the poor crew were upchucking their lunches constantly while Cruise held down the fort.

To his credit, this one actually looks kind of fun — and it’s accessible enough if you have, ahem… £6,000 laying around. Adventurous mortals like us can experience five minutes of weightlessness thanks to zero-G flight operators .

Who can forget when Tom Cruise made everyone question whether he was of sound mind when he climbed the tallest building in the world? Ethan Hunt took the long way to acquire some nuclear codes by scaling 130 floors of Dubai's Burj Khalifa. It was all made possible with a harness so tight it cut off his circulation and a training simulation that even matched the temperature of the building's glass. For a skyscraper so high it can rise above the clouds, Cruise did his best Spider-Man impersonation and made it look easy.

Tom Cruise has been around the Hollywood block. But there was one thing that the Mummy star had never seen before: a series of viral memes of the action hero clinging to a things. During a video interview for BBC Radio 1 , Cruise and reporter Ali Plumb reflected on some of his most iconic film moments, before jumping into the important stuff: his viral fame.

“Are you aware of the #TomCruiseClinging off things meme?” Plumb asked. When Cruise admitted he was not, the reporter busted out some of his favorite shots on his phone. There was Tom Cruise clinging to Free Willy in midair; there were a number of Tom Cruises arranged artfully around the fluffy face of a cat; there was Tom Cruise hanging on to the edge of an elevator shaft while Darth Maul plummets to his doom; there was a tiny Tom Cruise chilling off the side of Nicolas Cage ‘s larger-than-life face. During this display of Photoshopped meme images, Cruise simply could not contain himself.

“That’s fantastic,” he exclaimed. “Oh my god, why didn’t anyone show me that before? That is hilarious!” In fact, Cruise ended up in such knee-slapping hysterics that he had to ask for a glass of water to regain his composure.

The #TomCruiseClinging meme has actually been around since 2015, according to Know Your Meme , when Photoshop wizards began working their magic on a still of Cruise hanging in midair from the trailer of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation . In the stunt — which Cruise performed himself, with no green screen — he is clinging to a jet as it takes off, making it one of the most dangerous things he’s ever done, by his own admission.

Luckily, his willingness to push his own limits has resulted in internet infamy. Thanks, memes, for keeping a legendary scene alive — and thanks for giving Tom Cruise a good laugh.

No, it wasn’t a scene from “Mission: Impossible.” Tom Cruise, one of Hollywood’s most well-known movie stars, rappelled down into the Stade de France as H.E.R. played guitar, and the crowd of Olympians went wild as Paris handed over to the next Summer Games, in Los Angeles. He accepted the Olympic flag, shook a lot of hands, jumped on a motorcycle, and drove right out of the stadium and into prerecorded footage.

It’s hard to imagine a more apt melding of the Olympics’ awe-inducing athleticism and Hollywood’s showy sensibility than Cruise, who, at 62, still famously loves to perform as many of his own “Mission: Impossible” stunts as feasible in the film series. At the 2022 Cannes Film Festival , ahead of the release of “Top Gun: Maverick,” he was asked about his penchant for death-defying feats, which he might reasonably be expected to delegate to a stunt person. “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance?’” he quipped.

Cruise’s carefully choreographed acrobatics (and selfies with athletes) were fit for this closing ceremony’s vibes — especially the showmanship behind them. The details of what exactly was going to happen had been kept quiet, although People reported that back in March he had filmed the segment in which he sky-dives to the iconic Hollywood sign. Nobody quite knew until now what he’d do on live television in Paris. But it’s Tom Cruise: He lives, and occasionally defies death, to give us a good time.

Tom Cruise, Billie Eilish lead star-studded handoff at Closing Ceremonies

Cruise dropped into the Stade de France, before Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg performed in L.A.

Star power took over the 2024 Olympic Closing Ceremonies on Sunday evening, which featured Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg performing from Los Angeles, the band Phoenix rocking the Stade de France, and Tom Cruise rappelling down from the top of the 80,000-seat stadium and riding a motorcycle through Paris to close out the Games.

The celebration set the stage for what’s to come for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Cruise embodied the action heroes he plays on screen with the eye-catching stunt. After he landed on the stadium floor, he was swarmed by athletes. He was then handed the Olympic flag by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who was joined by Simone Biles. Cruise then hopped on a motorcycle and appeared to zoom out of the arena.

The television broadcast then cut to a previously recorded video of Cruise heading through the streets of Paris to an airplane, where he brought the flag from France to the United States. Then, Cruise sky-dived to the Hollywood sign which had a new look — the Olympic rings were overlaid. Once he landed, Cruise handed the flag to other Olympians as they ran through the city to Venice Beach. America, everybody!

Once at the beach, the prerecorded concert started off with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with Anthony Kiedis in a mesh shirt which he lifted over his head as the band performed their 2002 hit, “Can’t Stop.” Eilish performed a more recent hit, “Birds of a Feather,” from a nearby lifeguard stand, before Snoop Dogg, who dominated this Olympics, was joined by Dr. Dre.

The closing ceremonies kicked off on Sunday afternoon from the Stade de France. French singer Zaho de Sagazan opened the closing ceremonies with a rendition of Édith Piaf’s “Sous le ciel de Paris.”

The ceremony — which took place on an abstract stage shaped like the world map, but was reminiscent of the Aggro Crag from the ’90s Nickelodeon show “Guts” — featured plenty of electronic music, including songs by the French house band Justice and “Midnight City” by M83. Athletes and attendees sang along as Queen’s “We are the Champions” played in the booming stadium.

The bulk of the presentation displayed French artistry, music and choreography, including a segment where acrobatic gray figures helped raise the five Olympic rings to the stadium ceiling. French President Emmanuel Macron watched on as commentators marveled at the “unreal” spectacle. “God, the French are cool,” said one NBC commentator.

Phoenix kicked off their set from France with “Lisztomania” surrounded by hundreds of athletes who had rushed the stage. Announcers in the stadium kindly asked the athletes to leave the stage — repeatedly. The band was later joined at by Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend. The early aughts nostalgia continued throughout the program, as Kavinsky, who performed the song “Nightcall” (the track was featured prominently in “Drive,” starring Ryan Gosling).

Though many, presumably exhausted, Olympic athletes sat as the Closing Ceremonies wore on throughout the three-hour-program, they appeared to go off without much of a hitch. Wrapping up the ceremonies was the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, who put it plainly: “And that’s it!”
