Day 2: Bar Harbor, ME

Nestled on the east side of Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor has enchanted visitors throughout history with its incredible natural beauty as well as its vibrant downtown village. Its majestic mountains and stunning seascapes have long inspired artists and writers and beckoned many others who come for reflection, relaxation, or outdoor exploration. In the early 20th century, wealthy visionaries donated the area now known as Acadia National Park, recognized for its breathtaking vistas and abundant wildlife.

Day 3: Lunenburg, NS

Lunenburg was the first British Colonial settlement in Nova Scotia and remains one of its most historic and charming villages. Many of the downtown buildings possess a distinctive style with ornamental brackets and towers which complement their brightly painted designs. A growing number of art galleries and crafts shops also make for a rewarding browsing experience. The picturesque Lunenburg waterfront is the home of the world-class Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, with aquarium exhibits and a replica of Bluenose, Canada’s most- recognized and most-storied ship.

Day 4: Halifax, NS

Nova Scotia’s capital is a historic community that still shows a striking resemblance to the Halifax of the 1800s when it was a key naval station in the British Empire. The Halifax Citadel, a military bastion that has been standing for over 250 years, was restored and is still active. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on the waterfront celebrates the colorful history of Samuel Cunard, a Nova Scotia native who became a Canadian shipping magnate and founded a successful steamship company. A highlight of the city is Spring Garden Road, a lively neighborhood with intriguing boutiques in a subtly Bohemian setting.

Day 5: Pictou, NS

Day 6: Charlottetown, PEI

Explore Green Gables, an old farmhouse immortalized in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s cherished 1908 novel, Anne of Green Gables, high among the list of favorite places to visit. Day 9: Baie-Comeau, QC

"We had a fabulous time full of adventures, dog sledding was my absolute favourite activity, it was so amazing and the snowmobiling was super fun, no surprises that it was Hayden’s (my eldest) favourite activity getting to drive his own snowmobile! Unfortunately the flight didn’t go to plan, Ewan was so scared and literally begged to turn around and go back a few minutes into the flight, I must admit it was quite nerve racking being in that tiny plane! Me and the kids were a bit freaked out so I had no problem aborting, my husband was loving it sat up front so it was a shame for him. Also unfortunate that we didn’t get to see the aurora because it was unseasonably warm and the skies were cloudy but the viewing facility was great and the birthday cake was yummy! The staff on all the trips were fabulous. Only negative feedback (and this is purely for your information and in no way a complaint) Earls - did not put any candles in Ewans birthday cake, I know you had specifically asked them to do that. At the aurora viewing they bought age 16 candles for Ewan, not age 12, the guy was really sorry, he said that was the age he was told by the office. Gold Rush Inn - super miserable and rude waitress serving breakfast! We had a great time, thank you so much for going out of your way to make it special. I will absolutely go and leave a review."

• There are many outdoor water activities. Being on the north Atlantic ocean, the water is cold year round. Consider traveling in the late summer once the Ocean has the ability to warm up a bit.
• While the summer offers awesome water based activities, the winter equally is a great time to visit. If you can handle the cold, (temperatures in peak winter are often below freezing), there is skiing, ice skating, and sleigh rides through snowy Nova Scotia.

Where is Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia is a province in eastern  Canada on the Atlantic Ocean. The province is east of the state of Maine, Southwest of New Brunswick, South of Prince Edward Island , and Southwest of Newfoundland.

Weather in Nova Scotia

The weather in Nova Scotia depends on the season, with warm summers and winter often dropping below freezing. The middle of winter often has temperatures between 0-32 degrees Fahrenheit. Locals know to expect snow for most of the winter, so they make the most of the chilly weather.

If colder weather and winter activities are your thing, this is a great time to visit. There are festivals, snowshoeing, ice skating and sleigh rides, making this a real life winter wonderland.

Summer brings warm weather, and a whole new experience to Nova Scotia. Temperatures range from 70-80 degrees, making it ideal weather to get outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of the province. Spend the day relaxing at the beach, hike through the Cape Breton Highlands, or hang out at one of the many street festivals.

If you’re hoping for a balance between the two, consider visiting during the spring or fall. The earlier part of spring (mid-March to late April) is still a bit chilly with daily averages of 32-50 degrees fahrenheit. Later in the season is when the warm weather starts to kick in, with temperatures rising to 50-70 degrees.

You can expect the reverse for the fall, with warmer temperatures early in the season, cooling down as the fall season goes on.

Best time to visit Nova Scotia

The best time to visit depends on what activities and experiences you want to get out of your trip. There really is no “bad time” to visit Nova Scotia, and all seasons are worthy of a visit. There is plenty of activity year-round.

Summer is a popular season, because of the warm weather and the high amount of outdoor activities. For anyone hoping to spend a lot of time on the water (kayaking, swimming), it’s better to go during summer. Most  whale watching tours in Nova Scotia  don’t start until June, so if this is high on your list, consider holding off until summer.

If you’re hoping to experience the warm weather without the crowds of summer, try going in should season, when the crowds have thinned out. Late April-early May is a great time for this, before school is let out for the summer, or in late September-Early October when school has started again.

Even in the warmer months, it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket or another layer, especially if you’re near the water, as it can get a bit chilly. A notable reason for fall being a popular time to visit is the changing of the leaves. The autumn colors are pretty are pretty impressive, and is worth considering a fall visit.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is a great destination for various visitors. The most common types of visitor for the region is one who likes to be outdoors. As said above, there is plenty of outdoor activities, from hiking , to cycling , to spending time on the water.

Many people head to Cape Breton Highlands to get kick their active drive into gear. There are beaches and paths to explore the great outdoors. Follow the cabot trail through the winding roads to the top of the cliffs for jaw-dropping views. This track is especially popular for motorcyclists. When the winter season hits, hiking trails turn into great snowshoeing opportunities. Hit the slopes for skiing or sledding.

Those who like to explore shops, museums, and spend time indoors are also in for a treat. The best place to visit for this type of travel is to Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia.

The city is filled with museums, galleries, and historic sites. Learn about immigration at the Canadian Museum of Immigration, or spend some time at the new Discovery Centre off the Halifax waterfront. Pop through the various distilleries and breweries around the city.

Common Nova Scotia Tour Routes

Common tour routes include a visit to the three Canadian Maritimes provinces , New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island (PEI) and Nova Scotia. Options include driving through the provinces, or sometimes, taking a cruise through the maritimes.

Road trips usually stop in major cities such as Saint John, NB; Charlottetown, PEI; over to Nova Scotia towards Halifax. If you’re taking a cruise, the ports are a bit different, starting in Halifax, over towards Charlottetown, and sailing around New Brunswick through the Gulf of St. Lawrence towards Quebec.

Road trip routes through Nova Scotia alone are also a great way to see the region. A common route starts in Halifax, spending some time exploring the capital. The road trip heads west, stopping at Peggy’s cove and Lunenburg. Keep heading west towards Yarmouth, and explore the southwestern shores of the province, before heading north.

Make a stop in Digby, home to the famous digby scallops you can hand pick, before heading towards the coastal town of Annapolis Royal. Continue driving east towards Cape Breton Island to explore one of the most picturesque places in Canada ! After a stop on the island, many visitors make their way back towards Halifax. If you’re short on time (less than a week), it’s better to break up this trip.

Either head west from Halifax and tackle Peggy’s cove, Yarmouth, and Digby, or break up the time between Halifax and Cape Breton Island. While the drive is beautiful, there is a fair amount of driving, and the whole trip shouldn’t be spent in the car driving between places!

I love the Pacific Northwest and its wildlife and rugged beauty. Service at all levels was first rate. The naturalists are knowledgeable and passionate about their areas of study, including photography, underwater photography, geology, animal behavior, conservation, and indigenous peoples.

This was a very informative and educational expedition, which we have come to expect from the NatGeo expeditions. The naturalists, marine biologists and botanists were exceptionally qualified, friendly and patient in responding to the passengers' questions. Witnessing Humpback whales repeatedly bubble net feeding and watching other whales including, killer whales.

Most enjoyed Glacier Bay National Park with gorgeous mountain views, lots of wildlife, and glaciers. Liked the variety of activities available from strenuous hikes for the super fit to easy ambles for the less ambitious.

The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides.

5th trip to Alaska but with the addition 1st nation of Haida Gwaii in Canada made it extra special. Lots of Humpback Wales bubble feeding, breaching and bears in Inian inlet. Lindblad passengers are generally very experienced travelers and roll with the changes in plans.

Sea Bird is an old ship but being small there is a great intimacy between naturalist and passengers while viewing wildlife.

I love the Pacific Northwest and its wildlife and rugged beauty...Service at all levels was first rate. The naturalists are knowledgeable and passionate about their areas of study, including photography, underwater photography, geology, animal behavior, conservation, and indigenous peoples.

The Venture is comfortable and well-maintained...There were only 28 passengers on the 100 passenger ship. With very few exceptions, we shared common interest in the activities and formed supportive relationships with each other.

The meals were creative with multiple options for different tastes or requirements. Special needs were graciously accommodated.

The entire leadership and guide staff was professional and so passionate about their work. Eric Guth and Alex Rubenstein were generous with their knowledge of photography and encouraging of our progress. Luke Manson and Patrick Webster enthusiastically shared videos of their underwater wildlife discoveries. Sharon Grainger’s and Ashli Akins’ love for the indigenous people groups was obvious.

Itinerary Review

Although I knew the itinerary going in, I would have preferred more time on and around the water, rather than in towns...I loved experiencing the area by kayak, as it was independent, peaceful, and up close. Hikes were divided into casual, moderate, and a new option for photo hikes, where guides shared their knowledge of lighting, composition and camera controls.

Transportation Review

Some of the cruise line’s pre-trip info was incorrect. They said there was no laundry service on the trip, but there was. They asked everyone to arrive at the hospitality suite by 2 for a city bus tour before the cruise. There was no tour so we didn’t need to be there until 3:30. John Delaney, Lindblad’s new Sr VP of Global Sales, joined the cruise in Victoria and was made aware of the miscommunication.

Andrew was always helpful in answering my questions.

Exceeded expectations. Expedition lead, Rab, led a great team. All were knowledgeable and great teachers. Plus all were accessible throughout the trip. Betty Lou and Linda were particularly outstanding but all were great. James added his diving and photography expertise as did Drew and Brian. Eryn was an outstanding naturalist and patient teacher. Captain and crew were friendly and helpful. Fabulous in all regards. Rab really set the tone and having the experience of Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn, and the others enhanced the experience. The handling of bear confrontation on shore showed exceptional knowledge, training and leadership. Very impressive.

The Sea Bird is old and cabins are what they are, but still really good.  Get fitted sheets. Easier on stewards and passengers. But vessel was great. We knew what to expect so no surprises. The common areas were more than adequate for the expedition.

Amazing work given the limitations of the galley. Breakfast and lunch were perfect to fuel us up and keep us energized. Appetizers were a highlight. I very much liked the portion size at dinner. Soup needs work. Too much of same dark base. Think miso or chowder, but minor. Great baked goods.  Service was A+++ from Val on down.

No one better than Rab, Betty Lou and Linda. Gold standard. Rab shared personal experiences and emotions and displayed encyclopedic knowledge of every subject. Clone him. Betty Lou's talk on her career was fabulous. The whole team was knowledgeable, personable, helpful, available, great in crisis and enthusiastic. How can one be with Rab and not get excited about the events or with Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn and not learn? 

Photography staff was first rate. Brian and Drew knew everything and explained it clearly. Divers, Jim and Lynn, added a whole different dimension to our experience. Local guides were essential to understanding Haida and Kwakwaka wakaw cultures. And the Watchmen gave such authenticity to our experience. Loved Ranger Molly. Wow!!!! No weak individual on this team.

Haida Gwaii, Gwai Hannas, Old Massett, and Alert Bay were strong cultural experiences which made the whole trip worthwhile. The nature walks were well chosen and instructive. Sometimes after dinner talks were repetitious, but small issue.

Zodiak tours were uniformly outstanding and exciting. The excursion into the sea near the Hobbit Hole was a memory for all time as was Rabs talk about Vitas Bering and George Stellars. Whew, all good!!! Glacier visits were well done, awesome, and sobering to see the impacts of climate change. Potlach dances were highlight also as was the ability to meet Jim Hart and Christian White. Legendary and inspiring. Gwaii Hannas was magical.

Andrew was, as always, excellent. Made our trip prep easy. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

Embrace the experience. Pack lighter/take less. Read some history like Muir's Travels in Alaska, history of decimation of tribes by European exposure and books on Northwest art.

• A Remarkable Journey to Alaska, British Columbia & Haida Gwaii

This was a very informative and educational expedition, which we have come to expect from the NatGeo expeditions. The naturalists, marine biologists and botanists were exceptionally qualified, friendly and patient in responding to the passengers' questions....[We most enjoyed] witnessing Humpback whales repeatedly bubble net feeding and watching other whales including, killer whales.

We were aware Sea Bird was very small, and therefore its cabins would be correspondingly small. The beds were too narrow to be comfortable and secured, especially on the days driving through rough water in the open ocean.  Ordinarily, this would not be a much problem because we spend most of the day in larger public rooms (i.e., lounge, library or gym).  Due to Covid we voluntarily wore masks at all time from the start of the expedition and stayed away from other passengers. Also, because it was Alaska, it was too cold to sit and spend any amount of time on the sun deck. So we spent a majority of time in our cabin, except for occasional spotting of whales and other wildlife or meals in the dining room. We realized we prefer bigger, newer ships with larger rooms and beds.

Steaks and beef dishes were excellent and much better than the other main courses, which was unexpected. Being on an “Alaska” cruise and we were looking forward to more seafood, especially fresh fish mains and King Crabs. Therefore, we were generally disappointed. Meals need to be improved like those on other Lindblad cruises.

Steve (expedition leader) and Linda (botanist) were both knowledgeable and friendly.  Michelle Leon (doctor on board) was very considerate, kind and friendly. We felt safe and confident with her and will go other expeditions anywhere with her.

The itineraries could have been enriched and improved by more Zodiac rides, hiking activities and kayak paddling chances since there were a plenty of opportunities and down time. By surveying the ship we quickly realized the cruise was geared toward older and less active passengers. We too are seniors, but much more active, very curious and interested in discovering the new...[We least enjoyed] the Petersburg town center visit - most of the stores and museums were closed because it was Sunday. This visit could have been planned/scheduled better to arrive on weekdays or Saturday.

COVID Logistics

Since it was the first trip after 3 years of the Covid outbreak, we considered it to be a good "practice run" before we will start really traveling like we used to prior to Covid.

We can always rely on Andrew Browning. He is always very responsive, informative and very friendly. He carefully and timely informed us about the updates on Covid protocol, etc.

Alaska is a great destination and one should visit at least once in his/her lifetime.

Had the best humpback whale watching of my three trips to SE Alaska. Liked the variety of activities available from strenuous hikes for the super fit to easy ambles for the less ambitious. Lots of kayaking too. 

Most enjoyed Glacier Bay National Park with gorgeous mountain views, lots of wildlife, and glaciers. The weather was great as a bonus. Enjoyed the river trip at Haines with the chance to see lots of bald eagles. Olympic National Park was another highlight, just wish the weather had been better when we went to Hurricane Ridge where we really couldn't see any distance. Least enjoyed the stop in Ketchikan, maybe because I've been there twice before and it always rains hard, not just the misty rain which is to be expected in Alaska and adds an appropriate atmosphere.

I had sailed on Wilderness Discoverer before, so it was like coming home again.

The breakfast bacon on UnCruise ships is the best in the world, and I always eat more on my trips than I do all year at home. A big plate of perfectly ripe fruit available at the pre-breakfast made it easier to resist the two baked offerings that were there too. The variety and imaginative combinations of ingredients--who knew you could do so much with kale! Impressive how the single gluten intolerant guest had her requirements met at every meal.

Kelly was enthusiastic beyond words, and very knowledgeable. Our guide at Glacier Bay National Park who spent two days with us was a pleasure to have along, and I think she enjoyed us as much as we did her (sorry don't have her name) because we were a very receptive audience for all the information she had to share.

Adventure Specialist Andrew has arranged all my trips over the years, and he is as good as it gets. He even advised on which side of the ship was a better choice of cabin on this trip, and he was spot on.

We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides. Wonderful group to travel with, made some good friends. We wanted to see Alaska’s coast, would hate to travel by large ship. The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. Ketchikan...after peace and solitude, was too congested.

Given tight quarters well done. Slow shower drain, leaving toilet area wet, not my favorite.

Variety, flavors, presentation wonderful.

The enthusiasm and knowledge of all guides added greatly to the trip.

Baggage and transfer handled smoothly. Over emphasis on the boots. Needed once and ankle high was plenty.

Sailing Under the Radar, Pt. 3: Small Ships to New England and Canada's Atlantic Provinces

A chill in the air, a color besides green on the trees, squirrels frantically storing up nuts -- it's fall, folks, and fall means foliage, and foliage is practically synonymous with New England and its neighbors to the north, the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick .

While most of the big cruise lines sail fall foliage cruises from one or another of the East Coast hubs ( New York , Boston , Montréal , and Qúebec ), seeing the colors from a few miles offshore isn't exactly ideal. So, what's true of Southeast Alaska, British Columbia, the Sea of Cortez, and several other particularly scenic cruise destinations is true here as well: All in all, it's a region best visited by small ships, which can hug the craggy coast and explore the small bays and inland waterways up close and personal.

Following up on my recent articles on small-ship options in Alaska and sailing-ship options in the Caribbean, here's a rundown of the small-ship options available in New England/Canada, this fall and beyond. A number of them sail regionally through October, but some have already packed up and headed south toward their winter cruising grounds. Where that's the case, consider this a preview for summer and fall 2010, when all of these lines offer full seasons of fantastic regional cruising, foliage or no foliage.

American Canadian Caribbean Line ( http://accl-smallships.com ): A family-owned New England line, ACCL operates three tiny, nearly identical, no-frills ships that carry between 84 and 100 extremely casual, down-to-earth, and almost uniformly older passengers (the average age is around 72). It's a "what you see is what you get" experience, with spartan staterooms, just two public rooms (a lounge and dining room), and a money-saving on-board BYOB policy -- passengers can bring aboard what they like and keep it in the bar area, labeled with their cabin number. The line was started in 1966 by the late Rhode Island shipbuilder Luther Blount, who saw a demand for small-ship sailing on the rivers, canals, and coast of New England and Canada. Today, that's still the line's bread-and-butter region, with cruises focused on exploring small, historically rich ports and natural areas. Innovative features built into the line's ships help them go where few others can: a shallow draft and retractable wheelhouse let them sail through shallow canals and under low bridges, bow ramps let them pull right up to pristine dockless beaches, and a platform in the stern allows swimming and is a launch pad for the ships' glass-bottom boats. This month (and then again next fall), ACCL is offering several 12-night Northeastern Fall Foliage cruises sailing between its Warren, Rhode Island home base and Qúebec City, and visiting sites such as the Statue of Liberty and West Point, a number of small New York river towns, and Montréal. Rates start around $3,185. In summer and fall the line offers cruises on the Maine Coast, New England coastal islands, the Great Lakes, and Canada's Atlantic Provinces.

American Cruise Lines ( www.americancruiselines.com ): Take some great East Coast destinations, throw in some very comfortable small ships, add a few enrichment lectures and complimentary cocktails and a boatload of uniformly older passengers, and you end up with American Cruise Lines. Operating exclusively along the Eastern seaboard, the company's four 49- to 100-passenger ships are designed to poke into the smallest and most scenic ports, docking at sailboat marinas or within a few blocks of museums, shops, and historic districts. Itineraries are port intensive, with the ships underway for only a few hours in the morning or afternoon, usually putting in to the evening's port before dinnertime and spending the night at dock. Neither a luxury cruise nor an adventure cruise, the company offers ships are far younger and roomier than the competition's, boasting some of the largest cabins in the small-ship market, many of them with balconies. Guest lecturers provide some enrichment, helping passengers learn about their destination, and chefs from the Culinary Institute of America prepare good regional selections. This month, the 49-passenger American Glory and 100-passenger American Star are sailing 7-night Hudson River fall foliage cruises, with rates starting from $3,295 per person, double occupancy. Those vessels' sister ships, American Eagle and American Star, are currently offering 7-night cruises a little farther south, in Chesapeake Bay. In summer, the line concentrates on New England islands and Maine coastal cruises.

Canadian Sailing Expeditions ( www.canadiansailingexpeditions.com ): Founded in 2000, Canadian Sailing Expeditions operates the 245-foot, 77-passenger square-rigged barkentine Caledonia. Built in 1949 as a commercial fishing boat, the ship was rebuilt for passenger service in 2002, a process that added cabins, masts, and sails (the ship had previously sailed under diesel power alone) and brought everything into compliance with international safety-at-sea regulations. Interiors are more utilitarian than stylish, but cabins are relatively roomy as sailing ships go. The ship has already completed its Northeastern season, in which it sailed eight 4- to 14-day cruises in Newfoundland and Labrador, but keep them in mind for next year since this is one of the rare ships that cruises these rough, beautiful areas. They also offer river cruises round-trip from Qúebec in September. Prices start at a little over $2,000 per person (double occupancy) for 7-night cruises.

Classic Cruises of Newport ( www.cruisearabella.com ): Newly launched in 2001, the three-masted staysail schooner Arabella is a sleekly modern tall ship that carries 40 passengers in yachtlike comfort, with a hot tub on deck, kayaks and snorkel gear for off-vessel fun, and cozy cabins with portholes. Arabella has already moved south to Chesapeake Bay for fall (before heading to the Caribbean in December), but for 2010 you can book her for New England cruises from June through September, with rates starting from $1,095 for 5-night cruises.

Hapag-Lloyd ( www.hl-cruises.com ): This one's a bit of a ringer for all you expedition-cruise junkies -- not a fall foliage cruise at all but rather a grand tour of Canada's Atlantic Provinces. Setting sail round-trip from Halifax on May 29, 2010, this 15-night cruise visits Prince Edward Island, Qúebec City, St. Pierre, and Louisbourg (Nova Scotia), then spends six days sailing around Newfoundland. The ship is the 184-passenger Hanseatic, an expedition vessel launched in 1991 for Hanseatic Tours and sailing since 1997 for Hapag-Lloyd, a German line with roots that go back to the old Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Aktien-Gesellschaft line (created in 1847) and North German Lloyd (formed in 1856). Per-person prices start from around $7,700, cruise only. This and a number of other Hapag-Lloyd cruises are designated bilingual, with all onboard announcements and other business conducted in both English and German.

Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships ( www.libertyfleet.com ): Founded in 1995, this clumsily named line has since offered day sailings and multi-day cruises in Boston, the New England coast, Chesapeake Bay, and the Bahamas. The line's two-masted, 28-passenger schooner Liberty Clipper was launched in 1983 as a replica of a 19th-century Baltimore clipper. Though her hull is steel, she carries her old-fashioned air well, with a beautiful wooden deck and woody, period interiors. Cabins are small and offer bunk beds and a private marine-head style toilet/shower combos. For off-vessel fun, the ship carries snorkeling equipment, small sailboats and rowboats, and inflatable sea kayaks. Like Classic Cruises' Arabella, Liberty Clipper had already left New England at this writing, but she's still got several 3- to 5-day Chesapeake Bay cruises to go before that season ends in early November. Three-day cruises are priced at $550, 4-day at $700, and 5-day at $975. The ship's summer 2010 schedule hasn't yet been posted, but expect trips from Boston Harbor north toward the Maine coast and south to Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket.

The Maine Windjammers: The Maine Windjammers aren't a cruise line at all; rather, they're a collection of owner-operated vessels -- mostly schooners, some classic (going back as far as 1871) and others more modern re-creations -- that sail the Maine coast between May and mid-October. Those that haven't folded their sails for the season will be doing to in the next few days, so consider this a preview of what you can book next year. The experience is one of my favorites: 2 to 6 nights, departing from Rockport, Rockland, or Camden, Maine, and spending the majority of days just sailing, following the winds where they take you. By day, passengers are free to help with the sailing or just laze around. In early evening, they make anchor in any of a large number of quiet, protected harbors; prepare dinner on a wood stove in the galley; then serve it on deck as the sun starts dipping toward night. After that, it's conversation or music (if the crew or passengers have brought instruments), plus a drink or two if you've BYOB, then early-to-bed in the tiny, rustic cabins, which are only large enough for bunk beds and a sink, with small electric lights for reading. In the evenings or mornings, ships will usually run a small boat to shore and let passengers explore nearby fishing towns and uninhabited islands. Though the schooners are all private operations, you can get information on most of them through the marketing groups Maine Windjammer Association ( www.sailmainecoast.com ) and Maine Adventure Sails ( www.maineadventuresails.com ). Other schooners, such as the Mary Day ( www.schoonermaryday.com ), fend for themselves, without any organized marketing presence. Three- to 6-night cruises cost from about $400 to $1,100.

St. Lawrence Cruise Lines ( www.stlawrencecruiselines.com ): Sailing Canada's St. Lawrence River, 1,000 Islands region, and Ottawa River since 1981, the 66-passenger Canadian Empress was designed after turn-of-the-century river vessels, her decor pegged to what you would have seen around 1908, and her shallow draught allowing her to maneuver in close to shore. For the remainder of this month, the ship will be sailing 3-night cruises round-trip from Kingston, Ontario, and 6-night one-way cruises between Kingston and Qúebec City. Prices for 3-nighters start from $1,096 per person. Prices for 6-nighters start from $2,154. The ship concentrates on the same routes for its 2010 season, which runs from May through October.

Travel Dynamics

Vermont Discovery Cruises ( www.vermontdiscoverycruises.com ): Vermont Discovery is the first overnight cruise service to operate on Vermont's Lake Champlain since 1932. Launched in 2002, the 16-passenger Moonlight Lady was brought to the Champlain region in summer 2008, where she began offering 1- to 6-night cruises on the lake, the St. Lawrence River, and the Chambly Canal, May to mid-October. The experience emulates lake cruises of the early 20th century, concentrating on pure relaxation: taking in the lake views, hiking, bike-riding, visiting small lakeside towns (and, in some cases, major cities like Montréal and Qúebec), wildlife-watching, etc., with shore excursions offering access to regional theaters, museums, gardens, festivals, and villages. Moonlight Lady is cute as a bug, with her spiffy blue-and-white paint job, cozy cabins (each with a tiny bathroom), open kitchen and pilot house, and both open and enclosed viewing areas. Overnight cruises cost $299 per person, 2-nighters $599, 3-nighters $899, and the 6-night "Discover Montréal" cruises cost $1,799 per person.

Travel Documents

Prince Edward Island & Nova Scotia begins and ends in Halifax, Canada.

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Canada. Click here for more information on the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Patrol website.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not require a visa for the short duration of this tour. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation. If you are a frequent traveler to Canada from the U.S., you may benefit from the NEXUS program which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at the airport, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a consulate or embassy of Canada to determine what travel documentation is required.

Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact a Canadian embassy or consulate well in advance of any planned travel to ensure proper travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Deposit & Final Payment

The deposit and the fees for the optional Protection Plan or Cancel Fee Waiver [CFW] coverage are due at time of booking.

The deposit amount is $350 per person

Final Payment:

Final Payment is due to Tauck 90 days before departure for lands trips, and 120 days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Failure to make payment will be a considered a cancellation by the guest and all applicable cancellation fees will apply.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

• Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
• Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement for up to $5,000 to catch up to your tour or return home.
• Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
• Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip. 
• Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.

Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $349  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

90 days or more before departure = $350 per person

89-8 days before departure = $600 per person

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control,  Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Fee Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

Luggage Handling and Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety & Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. Digby Pines is a non-smoking resort. Local legislation in Canada varies greatly with respect to smoking. Generally, all the provinces visited – Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island – ban smoking in public places. Hotel guest rooms are generally exempt from these regulations.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

The Prince Edward Island & Nova Scotia journey is moderately-paced for the enjoyment of all guests. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

The weather in Nova Scotia is tempered by the ocean and in Prince Edward Island by the warm waters of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Summers tend to be warm, with very low humidity. From June through early September, average high temperatures range from 65 to 75˚F (18 to 24˚C); average low temperatures range from 45 to 55˚F (7 to 13˚C). Rainfall is spread evenly throughout the year at a moderate 4 in (102 mm) per month.

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

Most of our hotels offer valet laundry service for a fee. Please inquire at time of booking.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription (or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you), a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Eastern Canada:

• Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
• An optional jacket and tie for men
• Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
• Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
• A light sweater, jacket or windbreaker for higher elevations or a breezy night
• Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
• Insect repellent
• Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
• Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
• Travel alarm clock/ cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
• Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
• Daypack for camera equipment
• Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
• Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling
