Brian Volk-Weiss is one of the most impassioned and knowledgeable Star Trek fans. That's why it was no surprise when Paramount announced that they had teamed with Volk-Weiss's crew at The Nacelle Company to create a new line of Star Trek action figures , details of which are about to be revealed at New York Comic Con. The two things that Icons Unearthed producer Volk-Weiss knows better than anything (and anyone) are toys and Star Trek .
In an interview with CBR, Volk-Weiss explained why landing the license for Star Trek action figures was so important to him. He teased some tantalizing details about what fans can expect from this latest run of figures -- and what sets it apart from the ones other companies have made in the past. Most importantly, he spoke about his different approach to the toy business, and the steps Nacelle is taking to ensure that Star Trek fans will be satisfied with these new additions to their collection.
CBR: You're well-known for your Trek expertise; one of your biggest projects was the Star Trek docuseries The Center Seat . What does it mean to you personally that Nacelle is now in the action figure business with Paramount?
Brian Volk-Weiss: I don't know if this will ever feel real. It feels like an out of body experience. I feel like six, eight months from now, when I see them in stores, it's almost like I won't even understand I had anything to do with it... It just absolutely doesn't make any any sense. When you make toys, for lack of a better expression. It's a very intimate process. You're zooming in on patches on a shoulder. You're looking at printouts of shoes and eye color and the way shoulders attach to an arm, and I've done that now for three years. To be doing that [for] characters that affected the entire course of how my life has unfolded, it feels like an out of body experience.
Nacelle has previously worked on other action figure lines like Robo Force , Biker Mice From Mars and The Expanse . What actually goes into securing these licenses, especially for a brand as big as Star Trek ?
Robo Force TV Series in the Works From The Toys That Made Us Creator
Nacelle Company Founder and CEO Brian Volk-Weiss announces Robo Force, a six-episode animated series based on the toy line of the same name.
Our head of consumer products knew a guy who worked at Paramount. He emailed them and said hey, I just want to let you know the owner of the company is a big Trekkie. It is it worth our time making a proposal? And [the person] said yes, it's absolutely worth your time... We didn't have the proposal physically made, but we had the proposal. And what that means is I had been trying. I'm friends with people who own toy companies. So the thing that I pitched Paramount, I had pitched Super7. I had pitched NECA. I had pitched Jazwares. I can't tell you the character -- because we actually made them -- but I basically said, How come nobody's made Character X? When we had our Zoom [meeting] with Paramount Global, it was literally all the characters that I want on my shelf, and I don't understand why they're not there. That's what the pitch was. It was two meetings; there was one Zoom and [one] in Vegas... and then two weeks later, we got the email saying we got it. I have that email framed on my wall now. There are two Next Generation episodes that are widely considered to be the best . One is "The Inner Light" and one is "Yesterday's Enterprise." "Inner Light" is, to put it mildly, a Picard episode. And there have been endless, endless versions of the Picard from "Inner Light." Playmates made a Tasha Yar "Yesterday's Enterprise" figure [but] they just took the regular Tasha Yar and put her in different packaging. So I would argue no character has ever been made from "Yesterday's Enterprise," and it's literally tied for first place with "Inner Light." And that was basically my pitch.
Which raises the point of how many great Star Trek characters there are who could conceivably deserve new action figures. How do you decide which ones to include in the Nacelle Star Trek lineup?
There's two rules. Rule #1: It either has to be a character that has never been made before, or if it's been made before, that wardrobe or that costume has never been made before. Rule #2: Every wave, there can only be one figure from one thing. So we're only doing one thing from The Original Series. We're only doing one thing from Star Trek III . We're only doing one thing from Star Trek VI. We're technically doing two things from Next Generation, but they're from two different episodes. You might say well, isn't that splitting hairs? I would argue it's not. Because these episodes are so important to Star Trek canon, I would argue they are from two different things.
Other companies have done Star Trek action figures before, most notably Playmates. How would you describe Nacelle's approach to the project as being different or similar to what fans have already seen?
Lower Decks' Easter Egg Highlights a Terrible Star Trek Toy
The infamous Spock helmet makes a return in the latest episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks. But the real Easter egg is where it appears.
I consider the '90s Playmates line the definitive Star Trek toy line -- and it would have gone on probably another five years or more, had they not screwed it up. Their business model was brilliant. Every wave, you had some Captain Kirks, you had some Picards, you had some Janeways, but then you got salamander Tom Paris -- whatever weird stuff. Trekkies are completists, so everybody was trying to buy every week. Then after 10 years of everything going great, they put out this limited edition 1701 Picard and they only made 1,701 of them. That meant that unless you're part of that group, you now complete your Playmates line. That's what ended it. So what I would say is, other than that, we're going to do what Playmates did -- but in a bigger, more modern scale. We are green-lighting figures based on that character's position within the Star Trek canon. We are not green-lighting figures based on an Excel spreadsheet that says you'll sell this many Kirks, this many Picards -- we're not doing that. I can tell you right now, in Wave One, there is a character that 1000s of people are going to comment on Instagram: "Why did you make her instead of blank?" I can't say who she is, but it's a small role; I think she's on camera for maybe four minutes, but there was historical significance to her character in Star Trek , and that's why we did it. It's okay to make a lot of money on a Kirk, it's okay to make a lot of money on a Spock, but it's also okay to just do shit for yourself and for the fans, and because I am a fan, it's one and the same. So the character I'm talking about, I know she's not going to sell that well. If we were only making one figure and we just made her, it'd be the stupidest thing in the history of the toy [business]. As part of a wave that is hopefully one wave of, if we're lucky, dozens of waves, It will resonate -- because the context of her character with everything else, it says to the fans, wow, this guy is not just looking at spreadsheets. He's putting his money where his passion is. We're in the process of expanding the the size of Wave One, and that's because I read thousands of comments, and one of the comments that we heard the most was, oh, MacFarlane only made two, or Super7 only did one or two waves. We want to come out on day one and show the community we're here for the long haul. Please support us when we're at our most vulnerable, which is before Wave One, and then we will hopefully get to everybody you want... That's the help we need. Positive noise out there as long and as often as possible.

NYCC: New Line Of Action Figures From Nacelle To Feature Tuvix And More Deep Cut Star Trek Characters
| October 19, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 10 comments so far
More merchandise news has emerged from New York Comic Con, this time from the Nacelle Company who have a brand new license to make Star Trek action figures. We got our first look at the first wave of what they have in store and instead of going with the usual crop of Kirk, Picard, and the like, they are diving deeper into the lore to bring some memorable characters to life, in plastic.
Nacelle’s first Star Trek figures
The Nacelle Company is best known for their nerdy docuseries including The Toys That Made Us and The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek . They also produce the Gates McFadden InvestiGates podcast. Now they are combining their love for toys and Star Trek with a new line of action figures. Their license spans the nearly 60 years of the franchise, but they are set to focus on characters never before available as action figures. This includes Tuvix from Star Trek: Voyager , which was revealed to be the fifth figure for the upcoming line at New York Comic Con today. The character Tuvix appeared in just one episode, but that single appearance still has Star Trek fans (and stars) debating the morality of “Tuvix.”
Preview of Nacelle Tuvix figure
The Nacelle’s figures are 1/12 scale (about 6 to 7 inches) and “highly articulated,” similar to Hasbro’s Star Wars Black series . They are being designed to be affordable, with hopes to be available for under $30 each. The first wave will be available for pre-sale in the first quarter of 2025, with hopes the first figures will arrive mid-year.
At a New York Comic Con panel on Saturday, Nacelles showed off their plans for the first wave, which includes eight figures:
- Captain Jellico from Star Trek: The Next Generation “Chain of Command”
- Peter Preston from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
- Valkris from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
- Captain Garrett from Star Trek: The Next Generation “Yesterday’s Enterprise”
- Tuvix from Star Trek: Voyager “Tuvix”
- Mirror Archer from Star Trek: Enterprise “In A Mirror, Darkly”
- Weyoun from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
- Captain Sulu from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
They also have preview images from some of the first wave:
According to Nacelle’s Brian Volk-Weiss, the company is is already planning additional waves and also looking to fans, soliciting ideas on which characters they would like to see in future waves to complete their collections.
More to come from NYCC 2024
TrekMovie is at New York Comic Con and there is more to come. The big event is later Saturday with the Star Trek Universe panel focusing on Lower Decks and the Section 31 streaming movie. Look for our coverage of that plus any big announcements and we also will be doing interviews with members of the panel. So keep an eye on the site and our social media for all the big news.

I want to EMH Mk-2
Now I can have a Mirror Archer of my very own, just like Boimler!
Just like that, Tuvix is born!
Must buy Jellico
Mirror Archer please
Yeah, I’ll be picking up that Captain Sulu. Curious to see what other cool deep dives they have planned.
Weyoun?!? ☝️ YES, please!!!!!!
(But… which number is he? 😉)
That’s exactly what I said! I was like, “take my money I must have a Weyoun!”
Not bad. Too bad they couldn’t get Hasbro, but this is ok. I am hoping for a Worf from Picard Season 3 figure.
that is an INSANE wave one!
clearly they are aiming at folk who already have been collecting for a number of years (and lines)…and I have to say I don’t blame them…
Playmates v2 was dead out of the gate…it was much appreciated the figures were in the same scale as Playmates vI with more articulation but the public did not buy in…
Classic Trek era fans are, let’s face it, dwindling in number…doing Kirk, Spock, or even Picard and Data again would seem to be the safe bets but how many modern audiences are really getting into the 50+ year property with that era and not the more modern shows from the past 5-odd years?
Said modern era is not an option with Nacelle’s contract according to the panel (which begs the question who does have the rights to do Discovery, SNW, Prodigy & Lower Decks?) so if you’re forced to appeal to the older fanbase, why not go for broke with characters who have never seen plastic before?
I do see potential reuse of the Jellico body as any number of characters, and possibly the same for Sulu (maybe even Preston and Garrett with some retooling), so that might save them some money, but a bunch seem to be one-off types with almost no possibility for reuse…
it will be interesting to see the reaction at retail for sure…

The articulation on these new Playmates Star Trek figures is amazing. I bought 3 of these, one for me to keep unopened, one to open and one for my nephew. So happy Playmates made these but also very disappointed that the canceled the figure line, especially without them releasing the promised Rok-Tahk and Holigram Janeway.
