.38 Special is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida first formed in 1974 by a pair of childhood friends.

Neighborhood friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant decided to form a band in 1974 and called it .38 Special, and were joined by Jack Grondin, Steve Brookins, Jeff Carlisi and Ken Lyons. They released their first, self-titled, album in 1977 followed a year later by “Special Delivery,” both of which had a strong southern rock influence. For their third album, they shifted to a more general arena rock sound, which helped them achieve success with the albums that followed.

Alongside a sound shift, there was also a lineup change with Ken Lyons no longer a member, and the addition of Larry Junstrom, Carol Bristow, and Dale Krantz. Their first series of successful singles came in 1981 with the release of “Hold On Loosely” followed by “Caught Up In You” in 1982 and “If I’d Been The One” in 1983; all of which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Album Rock Track Chart. Their album “Rock & Roll Strategy,” which was released in 1988 contained the successful single “Second Chance.” The single reached No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts, as did the single that followed, “The Sound Of Your Voice.” Throughout the years there were many lineup changes, with Don Barnes being the most constant member, and as of 2014 the lineup consists of Don Barnes, Danny Chauncey, Bobby Capps, Gary Moffatt and Barry Dunaway.

.38 Special have been around since ’74 but these guys play with more energy than your typical group of 20 somethings.

One of the most popular American rock groups from their time, nobody should have any question whether this is a group worth seeing. Some people might worry whether they can deliver the same show they did back in the 70’s, but I assure you this group’s performance does not disappoint. If anything, they almost seem more alive than ever because it is rare to see a group of their age play with such energy. When older icons like .38 Special are still playing live shows for thousands, you know it is because they love playing and the audience equally loves listening.

.38 Special have played alongside groups like Grand Funk Railroad and Lynyrd Skynyrd for years, and it is no surprise they have a similar sound and same lively show. One of the founding members, Donnie Van Zant, is a brother of Ronnie Van Zant, founder and former head singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as Johnny Van Zant, who is now the head singer for the same group. Southern classic rock is simply in their blood.

.38 Special are more than happy to play their old hits, including Hold on Loosely and Rockin’ Into the Night, but they also broadened their horizons and showed appreciation for all classic rock, covering bands like ZZ Top and Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was great to see one band’s take on their peer’s tunes. All in all, the quality of music was very high, complimented well by the quality of energy and enthusiasm coming from the band and audience. Whether you’re a younger person or an old fan from the 70’s, this show has a lot to offer.

You have to give credit to a group who can form over forty years ago and still make music and tour together. Florida rock band .38 Special originally got together in 1974 and was founded by long term friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant. Only Don remains with the band yet apart from that, the lineup has remained pretty consistent.

This means they have a fantastic connection with both each other and the fans as they will have played venues and cities numerous times and their devoted fans are likely to have come out to see them over and over. Impressively the southern rock outfit have been recording throughout their lengthy career as opposed to resting on the laurels of their early popularity. The set is a good mixture of tracks old and new and the energy levels are ridiculously high considering most of the musicians onstage are now in their 60s. Totally fuelled by the audiences enthusiasm, they say heartfelt farewells before ending on a stomping rendition of 'Caught Up in You' from back in 1982.

38 Special put on a great show! Don Barnes voice has held up very well. New band is faithful to the music and reproduce the sound well. Did a fantastic cover of Feeling Stronger Every Day! They ALSO played my all time favorite 38 Special song, Chain Lightning, which rocked the house. I knew going in I would like the show, but I came out thinking it was in my top 10 all time concerts. They were on my bucket list and well worth the wait. Definitely a must see if you get a chance!

38 Special rocks! They opened for Kansas so did an abbreviated show, but played songs nonstop to get every minute of music in for the crowd going crazy for each song.

Will be looking for their next show nearby. Definitely worth seeing!!

Incredible and sound just as good as in the 70s and 80s. The only down side if they didn't play as many hits as I would have liked since they opened for another band. We could have listened to 38 special all night!

Could have played a little longer and performed an encore or two. The guys still have what it takes to put on a good performance.

Great show. Band still sounds awesome. Didn't realize how many hits they've written over the years.Great venue but was a bit loud. Went out of there with my ears ringing. Would love to see them again sometime.

It was AWESOME! We introduced a new fan to the show and she was blown away. The music sounded just like the cd. They played all their hits intermingled with a few other artists songs. In short we had a blast.

.38 Special, was incredible. They used what time they had wisely, not much talk just really good music. The band was tight and the vocals were spot on. I hope to see them again in the not so distant future.

First time to see the band after all these years. Loved the show and the sound was excellent. Won't be as long to see them again just hope they make another visit to TO! Great loved it also!

After more than four decades together, 38 SPECIAL continues to bring a signature blast of Southern Rock to over 100 cities a year. And at each and every show, thousands of audience members are amazed by the explosive power of the band's performance. Their many Gold and Platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse. With sales in excess of 20 million, most associate the band with their arena-rock pop smashes, “Hold On Loosely,” “Rockin’ Into the Night,” “Caught Up in You,” “Fantasy Girl,” “If I’d Been the One,” “Back Where You Belong,” “Chain Lightnin’,” “Second Chance,” and more – Timeless hits that remain a staple at radio, immediately recognizable from the first opening chord, and paving the way to their present-day touring regimen. Guitarist/vocalist DON BARNES says it's all about maintaining that intensity in their live shows. “We never wanted to be one of those bands that had maybe gotten a little soft or complacent over the years. We're a team, and it's always been kind of an unspoken rule that we don’t slack up, we stack up. We go out there every night to win.” Since 1976, the band has released more than 15 albums. And from the start, they’ve toured relentlessly, bringing their signature brand of ‘muscle and melody’ to fans worldwide. It is that steely determination that lives on in the hearts of these ‘ Wild-Eyed Southern Boys.' For  38 Special,  being   onstage is a celebration of camaraderie and brotherhood, a precision unit bringing the dedication and honesty to a long history of classic songs, as well as surprisingly fresh new material. The current lineup includes Guitarist/vocalist  DON BARNES,  keyboardist/vocalist  BOBBY CAPPS , drummer  GARY MOFFATT , bassist  BARRY DUNAWAY  and guitarist  JERRY RIGGS . Barnes adds, "This music keeps our wheels on the road. We're a band that's tried to stay honest with what has driven us over the years. We started out with nothing but bold determination to make our own history and to endure. Looking back now, it has been our greatest pride to have persevered and attained that level of success and longevity. For us, it's the ultimate validation.” “The magic's still there,” adds Barnes. "It's an emotional high for us to keep 'bringing it' after all these years. When those lights go down and we all walk up those steps to the stage and hear that crowd roar, it’s a real rush to the head. Barry Dunaway

Barry is previously best known for his work with Swedish heavy-metal guitar virtuoso, Yngwie Malmsteen . In the late 1980’s & ‘90’s, Barry performed on nine of Malmsteen’s albums—two of which have gold status in Japan, “Facing the Animal” and “ Alchemy ”.

Also to his credit, Barry has four world tours with Malmsteen. Other notable bands include Riggs, Whiteface, Joe Lynn Turner, Saraya, The Pat Travers Band and Survivor. Barry has also been a prominent member of Voices of Classic Rock/Rock & Pop Masters which was a collaboration of many rock legends such as Ronnie Hammond-(Atlanta Rhythm Section); John Cafferty-(Beaver Brown Band); Bill Champlin-(Chicago); Steve Augeri (Journey); Mike Reno - (Loverboy); Glen Hughes-(Deep Purple); Alex Ligertwood-(Santana) and many others.

Along the way, through his friendship with many amazing artists, Barry has also been a proud member of the American Airlines All-Star Band which benefits Susan B. Koman for the Cure and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. While not on tour, Barry is producing several projects in his home studio in St. Augustine,FL. Jerry Riggs

Jerry has been an old friend of the band for many years and comes with an impressive pedigree as a titan in the southern rock field, a virtuoso guitarist and vocalist with a long history as a recording artist and bandleader in his own right. Jerry was signed by Irving Azoff in 1981 to contribute songs and sequential music for the platinum-selling soundtrack album from the movie “Heavy Metal.” 

This led to additional work contributing songs for the Warner Brothers movie, “ Nightshift .”

As lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for his band RIGGS, Jerry secured a record deal with Warner Brothers Records in 1982 and released his eponymous album, following it up with a year touring throughout the U.S. as special guest on the Rush “Moving Pictures ” tour. 

In 1983, Jerry was invited to join up with the Pat Travers Band and toured worldwide with him for 10 years from 1983-1993.

Jerry has shared the stage with many icons of rock over the years and played with over 100 different recording artists, many who were Grammy winners.

He was profiled in Vintage Guitar Magazine in 2016 as a legendary artist maintaining his passion and fiery style. He has already made an intense impact on the band and can bring the heat to what is shaping up to be a group of legendary players.

About 38 Special

The .38 S&W Special , also commonly known as .38 Special , .38 Spl , .38 Spc , (pronounced "thirty-eight special"), or 9x29mmR is a rimmed, centerfire cartridge designed by Smith & Wesson. It is most commonly used in revolvers, although some semi-automatic pistols and carbines also use this round. The .38 Special was the standard service cartridge for the vast majority of United States police departments from the 1920s to the 1990s, and was also a common sidearm cartridge used by military personnel in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. In other parts of the world, it is known by its metric designation of 9×29.5mmR or 9.1×29mmR .

Known for its accuracy and manageable recoil, the .38 Special remains one of the most popular revolver cartridges in the world more than a century after its introduction. It is used for target shooting, formal target competition, personal defense, and for hunting small game.
