Every outdoorsperson knows the benefits of a good water shoe. They make traipsing through backcountry creeks or quick jaunts to the beach easy, providing traction and comfort while also being simple to clean and pack.

Combinding the look of their most iconic sillouette with the functionality of a certain chunky foam clog named for a reptile, the all-new Vans Trek is a modern, beach-ready slip-on of the likes Spicoli would still most certainly approve.

Developed with the aid of the brand's impressive surf team to inform on functionality and style, the result is a rinseable, go-anywhere adventure shoe that functions well and looks good doing it.

Made from lightweight, single-piece injected thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) plastic, the Trek is highly flexible, so it’ll bend for any kind of outdoor adventure or can be easily packed and stored while on the way to adventure. But it’s also exceptionally durable and solid, capable of withstanding all kinds of bending and flexing.

But now for the style. Virtually everything that makes Vans Vans is recreated here, from the iconic silhouette to the easy slip-on, slip-off style. The classic checkerboard style is reproduced on the top and sides of the shoes with punched-out square holes, which also allow for breathability and water drainage. After a long day in the water or scrambling through mud, all you have to do is rinse these bad boys off and you’re good to go.

And the style extends to the sole as well, with the broad base and reverse waffle design enabling increased grip and traction on slippery surfaces or while scrambling around on rocks.

Available in four colorway options—grape leaf green, navy, black, or limited-edition blue-specked purply-Swirl created in partnership with artist Chris Johanson—you can grab your own stylish pair for $65.

I bought Vans' version of Crocs—and they're weirdly awesome

What is the Vans Trek Slip-On?

The new Trek Slip-On is a useful water sandal for surfers.

What I love about the Vans Trek Slip-Ons

The Vans Trek Slip-On shoe is beach-ready attire.

For starters, the Vans Trek Slip-On is sturdy yet flexible. The plastic that Vans used to craft these shoes is rubber-like and pliable. No matter how much you bend or twist them, they don't lose their shape and just pop back into place. So far, I haven't noticed any signs they will crack or crease—which is a common complaint among Crocs customers—and they're easily compressible for travel.

The TPU plastic is waterproof, so any dirt caught inside the shoe washes right off with a quick rinse. This makes them a great candidate for wearing to the beach, or on muddy hikes by the creek or river. The TPU also makes the shoe as lightweight as a sandal or flip-flop.

The clever design choice of replacing the canvas checkerboard pattern with ventilated holes makes the shoes breathable and keeps my feet cool instead of hot and sweaty. You can also literally walk through water (whether it be the ocean or a puddle), and the squares allow the shoes to drain quickly.

What I don’t love about the Vans Trek Slip-Ons

Made of a flexible plastic, the Trek Slip-Ons are strong and bendable.

Out of the box, my Trek Slip-Ons fit tight. I’m usually an 11.5 in men’s sizes but these shoes aren't available in half sizes. I took Vans’ advice and ordered down from my normal size. As someone with wide feet, the size 11 fit snug in areas of the foot I wish were a tad looser. The upper of the shoe squeezed the top of my foot, and my pinky toes scraped the edges of the toe box. The upper loosened up after a short break-in period, but my pinky toes still suffer.

Are Vans Trek Slip-Ons worth it?
