The tour announcement comes hand in hand with news of their first new album in eight years,  Ask That God , slated for release on July 26 through Capitol Records.

This marks a significant return for Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, who have been the creative forces behind Empire of the Sun since their debut album,  Walking On A Dream , in 2008.

Their previous albums,  Ice On The Dune  (2013) and  Two Vines  (2016), have helped cement their reputation as pioneers in the electro-pop genre.

The forthcoming album  Ask That God  is now available for pre-order and promises to be a sonic journey with tracks like Cherry Blossom , which reflects on the beauty and wonder around us, “Music On The Radio,” and “Changes.”

Critics are already buzzing about the new music, with Consequence of Sound calling “Music On The Radio” a “bass-heavy psychedelic jam,” and Popdust praising it as “light, catchy, and refreshing.”

Billboard noted “Changes” for its classic Empire of the Sun feel, featuring a danceable beat and joyful synths.

Due out July 26 (via EMI Australia), Ask That God is led by the first singles “ Changes ” and “Music On The Radio;” both are accompanied with sparkling, Michael Maxxis-helmed music videos that capture Steele and Littlemore in all their astral-wizardry.

Ask That God is the follow-up to 2016’s Two Vines , which logged at week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums and featured contributions from Fleetwood Mac’s  Lindsey Buckingham , Wendy Melvoin from Prince’s Revolution band and two members of David Bowie’s  Blackstar  band, pianist Henry Hey and bassist Tim Lefebvre.

To build the buzz, Empire of the Sun today shared behind the scenes footage from the “Changes” music video.

“ Ask That God is an album we searched for and were thankfully blessed with. We are nothing more than conduits, gathering experience and finding what is meant for the Empire to find,” explains Steele.

Since their breakthrough debut album from 2008, Walking On A Dream, which housed the title track and “We Are The People,” Empire of the Sun has collected eight ARIA Awards (including four at the 2009 ceremony), two APRA Music Awards, an APRA Billions Award , and collected 7.6 billion streams, according to EMI.

Littlemore hinted at some hidden gems in an interview with Billboard   in 2021 . “There’s a lot of great music in the bag. I’m hoping that will see the light of day,” Littlemore told this reporter. “I have great faith. I don’t feel we have exhausted that well by any stretch. The name still has a lot of goodwill. I really hope we can come together and finish it.”

Empire of the Sun (formed in 2007) is an Australian electronic music duo, comprised of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore from Sydney, Australia.

The dynamic duo of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore met in the year 2000 having both been signed to EMI and being introduced by A&R representative Simon Moor. The pair collaborated on their solo projects with Littlemore providing songwriting assistance on Steele’s band The Sleepy Jackson’s debut album, and Steele assisted on Littlemore’s art-rock project Teenager.

Littlemore is also of the electronic dance outfit Pnau alongside guitarist and producer Peter Mayes. Pnau’s self-titled album reunited Steele and Littlemore and the three crafted a luscious vocal-centred album, which led to the creation of Empire of the Sun.

The band’s name which has long been attributed to the J.G. Ballard novel “Empire of the Sun” or the Spielberg film of the same name, actually refers to empires of civilisations where the sun is the theme of worship, that the band feels connected to.

Despite living in different parts of Australia the two entered the recording studio with Peter Mayes and produced their debut album “Walking on a Dream” in October 2008. The album debuted at No. 8 and peaked at No. 6 on the ARIA Albums Chart, led by the singles “Walking on a Dream” and “We Are the People”. Empire of the Sun earned mainly positive reviews for the album, drawing comparisons with MGMT.

The band’s follow-up, 2013’s “Ice on the Dune” was led by the single “Alive”, which featured a music video produced by Kelvin Optical, Inc., of Bad Robot. The album received slightly poorer reviews than its predecessor however along with the release the band announced they would be scoring the soundtrack for the Jim Carey sequel “Dumb and Dumber To”.

Live reviews

I've seen Empire of the Sun twice now, once at Virgin Mobile Freefest 2011 in MD and once at EDC Chicago 2013. During my first encounter, I was just waiting for them to finish their performance so the artist that I really wanted to see could come on stage. Long story short, I fell in love with these artists, and it was my fate to be at that stage early so I could be moved by such beautiful music. These artists are definitely unique, with beautiful costumes and sets that made me wish I discovered Empire of the Sun much sooner. My second encounter was much more magical, because I actually knew who these people were, yet I was still swept off my feet by a most enchanting spectacle. It's hard to describe what it means when something is magical, but all I can say is that these performances are so worth any sacrifices one might have to endure. What I enjoyed most about the show was when the lead singer, Luke Steele, jumped off stage and stood over the railing that held back the crowd. Hearing his voice so close would be enough to drive even the shiest person wild, in a good way! I still remember his metallic silver costume, and I will never forget how amazing the show was. I won't be any more specific for fear of spoiling the show for true fans who have yet to watch Empire of the Sun perform. I will just give one more insider, and it is that Empire of the Sun shows these days are PACKED. So one might not have as much room to dance as he or she hoped. My advice is to arrive early if you want to be close to the stage, otherwise be ready to watch them from far away.

Seeing Luke Steele of Empire of the Sun at Marymoor Park was the second time I got to see the group. The first time I saw EofS at the Paramount in Seattle last year, Nick Littlemore did not show up. I don't know why the other band member doesn't show up for live shows. I guess it doesn't matter since Luke Steele has more than enough great stage presence. He came down into the crowd during "Celebrate", where I luckily got to see into the microphone!!! Mr. Steele had a special "Surround Sound in Seattle" guitar to smash on the stage after Walking on a Dream. The dancers at one point at t-shirts cannons, I was not lucky enough to catch one since I was at the front.

The background visuals are A-1. Not boring and not the just the music video playing. One of the visuals was a tunnel which Steele was pretending to run down. :P Another visual was a digital overlord Steele would back-talk to.

I must say the costume designer is top notch! I love the back-up dancers costumes. I think there were about 6 different changes.

I did have one problem with the Marymoor experience which was the vocals were too soft. I had to scream during lulls "TURN UP THE VOCALS! I WANT TO HEAR YOUR BEAUTIFUL VOICE!" :( At a couple of points during the show he was singing with two microphones at the same time.

10/10 would see again.

The Australian duo Empire of the Sun, consisting of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore are as known as well for their music as their bizarre outfit choices and boisterous live show. Performing shimmering indie pop in equally shimmering costumes, you cannot help yourself getting involved in the boys' flamboyant world.

As Luke emerges from underneath the stage in his huge head piece and glittered face decorations the audience erupt in cheers and nearly drown out the opening bars of 'Old Flavours'. Although the performers are flamboyant, they are well tuned musicians and their tight backing band bring these synth-heavy pop gems to life brilliantly.

They run through material from both albums at a rapid pace keeping the audience engaged with trippy visuals and extended instrumentals throughout the show. Big cheers for 'We Are The People' cause the band to thrash out the single even harder. The hedonistic party that is 'Walking on a Dream' receives rapturous applause for the eccentric pair. An extended version of 'Tiger By My Side' leaves the audience impressed and more importantly realising that Empire of the Sun are a band of integrity as opposed to a duo covered in glitter.

Empire of the Sun, formed by Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, is one of my favourite bands of all time, and seeing them perform live was an incredible experience. The band is undeniably wacky, famed for their eccentric style, and they did not disappoint on stage. The sun god attire with the crazy spiked crown and the jutting shoulder pads were all in place. The duo brought an insane amount of energy on to stage, and were absolute geniuses on the electric guitars. The backing musicians and the flashing neon lights that lit up the entire concert hall in various shades of blue and green were spectacular, and really added to the show. However, Steele and Littlemore retained the crowd’s attention the whole time, as the foremen of the show. At one point Steele even jumped off the stage to be nearer the audience and the crowd went wild. Empire of the Sun’s biggest hits, including ‘Walking on a Dream’, ‘Alive’ and ‘We Are the People’ were, of course, performed and garnered the biggest crowd reactions of the night.

The Empire of the Sun concert was certainly an experience. If you haven't seen seem live, I highly recommend it! The whole show was a grand performance. I think what made it really good for me was their back up dancers. There were four women all the same height dressed in these really elaborate costumes and they danced all night long. It made me want to be one of them, it looked like so much fun! It almost felt like a mix of electronic music and cirque du soleil, just no acrobatics. I really enjoyed the two openers too, Holy Ghost! and St. Lucia. I have seen Holy Ghost! before a few years ago when they opened for Chromeo. I really like their music. St. Lucia's music is equally as good. It makes you feel like you've been transported back to the 80s. It was spectacular!

AWESOME! I can't express it more! Awe inspiring! I don't want to spoil it for the other Empirians. But one thing that had me almost on the floor laughing soooo hard... Luke is whaling on his Fender guitar, all of a sudden I see this Gold Guitar fly like in slow motion from his hands sailing in the air up and all the way to the other side of the stage! Awesome! Simply Awesome!

The Dancers, their outfits, the backdrop graphics, the show itself... Luke!!! It was just AWESOME!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS! EMPIRE OF THE SUN IS A BAND NOT TO MISS!!!!

Oh my gosh, if you want a performance, a CONCERT - this is it. Just about my favorite concert ever, and I don't say that easily: I have been to a lot of concerts I've loved! Empire of the Sun is beautiful, and ridiculous, and absurd, and theatrical, and energetic. The whole show feels RIGHT. Highly recommend. I judge how good a concert is by how much I miss it when it's over, and this concert, I'm nostalgic for even though it was just last night.

My amazing boyfriend gave me the most terrifically, magnificent birthday gift ever, in which case was the empire of the sun concert! This was my dream concert and I can't begin to say enough wonderfully good things about this concert. I recommend anyone and every one to go see them in concert. Very high energy and the costumes were amazing. Empire of the sun aimed to please and 100% delivered!!!! p.s. they kick ass live!!

It was my first time watching their live performance. I must say that the band overcome my expectations regarding the presentation quality and pace.

We had a lot of fun singing and dancing those amazing songs together. The use of BG visuals does help to create the environment.

Indeed, it was of one the best concerts we experienced this year!

I never more will lose their presentations here.

Regency was a cool setting for a more intimate show. Dancers, lighting, sound was all awesome.

I thought they could've played more of their upbeat songs, got a bit draggy in the middle. I bought this ticket because of their performance I saw at OSL two years ago. Was hoping for more of their bangers and more use of his cool hat :)

Spiderbait’s Kram Says A ‘Comedy Of Errors’ Led To Their Defining Hit

Empire Of The Sun: 'This Is The Perfect Time To Come Back'

"I had so many calls, emails, messages and requests from people yearning for the songs and the music. This is the new era of Empire Of The Sun."

empire of the sun band tour

It’s been 23 years since singer and multi-instrumentalist, Luke Steele , and musician and record producer, Nick Littlemore , first met at an A&R meeting.

Both artists were already signed to EMI, albeit as part of separate projects before the two would collaborate on The Sleepy Jackson’s debut album, Lovers , released in 2003 – Steele’s alternative rock band, and in 2006 with Littlemore’s art-punk band, Teenager. A year later, the two worked together again on the self-titled Pnau record, the third album by Littlemore, Peter Mayes and Nick’s little brother, Sam.

In August 2008, Nick Littlemore and Luke Steele united as Empire Of The Sun and released Walking On A Dream , the lead single from the album of the same name. The song – which is now iconic in Australia – peaked at #10 on the ARIA Singles Chart, reached #4 on the 2008 triple j Hottest 100, and is certified double platinum. In 2009, Walking On A Dream won that year’s ARIA award for Single Of The Year and the APRA for Dance Work Of The Year in 2010.

Funnily enough, in 2016, almost eight years after its original release, the song was featured in a Honda Civic commercial in the US, leading to Empire Of The Sun experiencing their first Alternative Songs hit and eventually topping Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart.

In 2013, Empire Of The Sun released their second album, Ice On The Dune . “Self-assurance and conviction guided the knife when the duo were removing the fat from Ice On The Dune . As a result, the album continues to throb forwards and holds a consistency cover-to-cover that – for all the acclaim and sales – their debut somewhat lacked,” The Music writer Benny Doyle wrote in an interview with Nick Littlemore.

Late 2016 saw the release of Two Vines , Empire Of The Sun’s most recent album which featured the hit, High And Low . The single also featured on the EA Sports game, FIFA 17 . The band struggled to write music during 2020 and 2021, not getting much out of Zoom collaborations.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

Last year, Luke Steele released his debut solo album, Listen To The Water , and this weekend, Empire Of The Sun will headline Now & Again festival in Werribee, Victoria, before playing a handful of shows in Sydney and Brisbane . It’s their first show in Victoria in almost a decade.

“I think there’s always been tremendous love for this band,” Steele continues, recalling the moments during lockdowns, “I had so many calls, emails, messages and requests from people yearning for the songs and the music. There were a lot of testimonies about what they’d been through, you know, from people getting over cancer to getting married to giving them hope during moments of deep depression. It became quite evident that we had become conduits or ambassadors and we have to honour that. This is the new era of Empire Of The Sun.”

Steele doesn’t seem at all nervous about headlining Now & Again festival alongside Gang Of Youths, and featuring Michael Bibi, Tones And I, Crooked Colours, German DJ Sven Väth, Peach PRC, Becca Hatch, and more excellent acts. “It’s gonna be so great. Festivals are one of the greatest experiences of music,” he proclaims. Performing at Werribee Racecourse, or “Being in a field or a dock or wherever with this huge amount of people all there for the same reason, the pulse and energy is undeniable.

“Everyone in the world of music felt that pull and those emotions in the two years when it was all taken away from us.” Empire Of The Sun couldn’t take the stage, and they struggled to write music while apart. Life really did shut down for Steele. “We work extremely well in the same room on a really fast, stream-of-consciousness kind of way of writing.

“It's quite strange how we write. I remember working with Lindsey Buckingham in Henson Studios in Hollywood, and we were writing and he was jamming along and he's just sort of stopped and said, God, this is so enjoyable,” he says with a bit of shock in his voice. “We’re like painters, throwing down 300 different melodies and lyrics. I love how Empire songs are formed because they become unique ways of talking about big issues, like hope and love and freedom and imagination.”

Those issues do indeed soundtrack Empire Of The Sun’s music. Visuals are also essential for the group and have always been intertwined with the music itself. “A lot of people take in art with their eyes, you know?” Steele asks – “It’s so, so important to make your videos and other art look beautiful. We’ve been given these precious eyes to see the magical things in this world. We want to make use of every sense a person has.”

“We caught up last summer in LA – I really love the relationship,” he says. “Nick says, ‘How's your wife?’ I say, ‘Good, how's your wife?’ He goes, ‘Good. All right, should we get into it?’ It’s hilarious like that. We know the job at hand and we know what's at stake here and what our position is, so we work pretty hard and we work so well together.” There’s no small talk for Empire Of The Sun, Steele confirms, “Our small talk is literally four words: ‘Studio? Yes. Sounds good.’” It might sound weird, but it’s perfect for one of Australia’s most loved bands.

While Steele has collaborated with Littlemore, members of his musical family, and other artists, he went about his solo album, Listen To The Water , as a self-proclaimed Lone Ranger. “I mixed it myself and produced it all myself,” he shares. “When you're so entrenched in that path, you only really have yourself to blame or answer to when things go wrong.”

Steele admits that it wasn’t easy making the album, “I went through a couple of deep depressions,” he states, recalling the points when he’d listen to the mixes 600 times at different sound frequencies. He laughs at his inner perfectionist, “I had some real Brian Wilson moments.

“It was quite incredible, the way the songs were delivered to me. I would have a melody for a song, put down a guitar pattern, write the lyric, and cut the vocal immediately. And I'd finish the song the next day. So, every song was two days each, which was quite a beautiful process as I was laying these breadcrumbs along the path. I just had to keep journeying down that path to get to the next song.”

Steele is lucky because songwriting doesn’t always work like that. “Songwriters will tell you that,” he continues, even if you’re with the best songwriters or in the most beautiful place in the world. “Even then, your spirit might not be moving. You just have to be ready, and it just happened to be the perfect time.”

Perfect timing and overall, good for Steele as an artist. “[Making the album] did something for my soul. I proved that I was capable of writing, recording, mixing and producing a record.” Which will hopefully come in handy for the new era of Empire Of The Sun Steele has talked about.

“At the point of writing that record, I was at the crossroads,” Steele begins. He wasn’t sure if continuing in music could be a possibility. “I think I had like, $35 to my name. I was living in a caravan in front of my parents’ house. I borrowed money from a lot of people [to make music]. It was at that point where maybe I would have had to get a real job.

“It's funny talking to my parents now, and my father-in-law and stuff, they all said the same thing,” he explains. “They were ready to have that talk and go, ‘You can't be serious about pursuing this music thing much longer.’ That song was a real blessing from God; the record came out the week my daughter was born.

“So we had this child, and then, literally a week after it came out, it had tremendous influence around the world and started moving at this rapid pace and the rest is history. It was an amazing blessing, but then for it to have been such an influential part of people's lives, that's the mission, for your songs to have an influence and to inspire people.”

Empire of the Sun, the visionary Australian electronic duo comprising Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, have been making waves across the world with phenomenal live shows and anthemic smash hits for the last decade as one of Australia’s most successful musical exports.

With Steele's background in The Sleepy Jackson and Littlemore's founding role in PNAU, the duo embarked on a sonic odyssey that has captivated audiences worldwide. Since their emergence, Empire of the Sun has transcended boundaries, blending alternative electronica with mesmerizing visuals to create an immersive musical experience unlike any other.

Their seminal debut album, Walking On A Dream, which the musicians described as "a spiritual road movie" spawned iconic singles “Walking On A Dream” and “We Are The People”. The critically acclaimed second LP, disco-pop Ice On The Dune featured “Alive” and “DNA” and saw the band tour the world. Third LP "Two Vines," saw the band welcoming guests like Lindsey Buckingham, members of David Bowie's band from the Blackstar sessions, and Wendy Melvoin from Prince & the Revolution and featured singles “High And Low” and“Way To Go”.

Their chart success extends far beyond their native Australia, with their albums achieving multi-platinum certifications across the globe. 8 years since their last LP, 2024 sees the dawn of a new era.

Empire Of The Sun Are Touring Aus Next Month For The Biggest Fitzroy Garage Sesh Of Them All

Empire of the sun has announced its 2023 tour dates

Sweeney Preston

The duo comprised of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore  will be busting out its unique brand of live performance in Brisbane, Sydney and as part of the Now And Again Festival in Melbourne in 2023.

Empire be hitting the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on Feb 22, Brisbane’s The Fortitude Music Hall Brisbane on Feb 25 and Werribee Racecourse for the Melbourne slot.

It honestly feels like an eternity since Empire of the Sun crushers graced our local stages and turns out it most definitely has.

Empire of the Sun Tour Dates

The last time the musos performed in their homeland was 2017 and since then, they’ve been lucky enough to smash out killer gigs at Coachella and Ultra Festival in Korea.

Before the duo went globetrotting, its debut album Walking On A Dream picked up eight ARIA Awards (including Best Album, Best Single and Best Group), two APRA Awards, surpassed double platinum ARIA sales and produced multiple successful singles. Not bad. Not bad at all.

We’d also be remiss not to acknowledge that this tour announcement aligns almost perfectly with the viral AF Fitzroy Garage Party TikTok saga .

For those who need a reminder, Empire of the Sun’s banger “We Are The People” became the soundtrack for many of the parodies (and of course, the original vid).

The viral phenomenon caused everyone to remember that the track was undoubtedly what a Triple J presenter might refer to as an absolute “tuna sandwich”.

Perhaps the entire garage sesh was just a guerrilla marketing campaign for Empire’s return?

If this is the case, mad respect. If not, ’tis the happiest of accidents.

Tickets for Brisbane and Sydney 2023 tour dates will be available to book via the band’s website .

Frontier pre-sale begins Jan 9 at midday local time. General tickies will be available the following day on Jan 10 at 1pm local time.

Critics' picks: The 11 best things to do and see in the Twin Cities this week

C onsidering that the band's Oscar-winning frontman Jared Leto climbed the Empire State Building to help hype their first tour in six years, many folks may want to come out just to gawk at the eccentric actor-turned-singer. That's worked out well in the past for the arty glam-rock band the actor and his drummer/brother Shannon Leto formed in 1998, which has since developed a strong, cultish following akin to U.K. rockers Muse. They're four months into an ambitious global tour for their pandemic-inspired album, "It's the End of the World But It's a Beautiful Day," and they picked a suitably dramatic place to play. (7:30 p.m. Sun., the Ledge Amphitheater, 1700 Parkway Drive, Waite Park, Minn., $46-$99, ticketmaster.com )

CHRIS RIEMENSCHNEIDER

It might be yacht rock weekend in the Twin Cities but Lovett prefers to be on a boat, with a pony and his Large Band. The veteran Texas troubadour brings his wide-ranging musicality, Large Band virtuosity, compelling songs about pants and penguins, and, of course, his dry wit. The Grammy winner's performances are filled with emotion, depth, humor and outstanding genre-defying music. Always highly recommended. (7:30 p.m. Fri., State Theatre, 805 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls., $60-$95, ticketmaster.com )

After opening recent arena shows for Luke Combs and Tyler Childers and making a splash at Bonnaroo, this rocking country band from Virginia's Southern Appalachia is teetering on the kind of blue-collar Nashville-outsider success that Childers, Zach Bryan and Turnpike Troubadours have enjoyed of late. Singer/guitarist Isaac Gibson could pass for Chris Stapleton's kid brother. He and his well-greased band of real yahoos blend in authentic gospel and mountain-music influences into a budding discography that sees next month's release of their fourth album, "Leavin' This Holler." (8:30 p.m. Thu., First Avenue, 701 1st Av. N., Mpls., $25-$30, axs.com ; also 7 p.m. Mon., Earth Rider Brewery, 1617 N. 3rd St., Superior, Wis., $25, etix.com )

Outstanding cellists and students who are serious about pursuing that as a career converge upon Northfield each summer for the International Cello Institute. Once a week, some of its esteemed faculty come north for Wednesday night recitals in Minneapolis, starting with England's Hannah Roberts, principal cellist with the Manchester Camerata and soloist with some of Europe's top orchestras. Pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion joins her for sonatas by Samuel Barber, Beethoven and Frank Bridge, and some Simon Parkin. Ensuing Wednesdays feature recitals by Joseph Johnson and Eunghee Cho. (7:30 p.m. Wed., Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, 511 Groveland Av., Mpls., $15-$40, internationalcelloinstitute.com )

ROB HUBBARD

"Summer at Orchestra Hall" starts with the kind of program the hall would host at last century's Vienna-themed Sommerfests. Bulgaria's Delyana Lazarova will conduct Mozart's Overture to his opera "Don Giovanni," and Beethoven's Fourth Symphony. And violinist Natsuki Kumagai will step forth from the orchestra's string section to solo on a Joseph Bologne violin concerto. After two nights in town, the program will close Winona's Minnesota Beethoven Festival on Sunday. (8 p.m. Fri., 7 p.m. Sat., Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, Mpls., 4 p.m. Sun., Winona Middle School Auditorium, 1570 Homer Road, Winona, $20-$75, 612-371-5656, minnesotaorchestra.org or mnbeethovenfestival.org )

In three concerts on the same day, Crooners will showcase the next generation of Minnesota musicians with some help from experienced pros in the fields of jazz, classical and musical theater. Vocalist Anna Hashizume will lead aspiring classical singers including Lillian Baker, Ron Romero and Leah Odegaard-Dunning (4 p.m.). Veteran singer Jennifer Grimm will guide jazz musicians under the age of 25, including trumpeter Ella Grace, saxophonist Luca Cavalletti and vocalist Amy Snell (5 p.m.). Theater stalwart Max Wojtanowicz will work with striving thespians Mabel Weismann, Livv Rankin and Max Ashford, among others (6 p.m.). Each performance requires a separate ticket. (Sun. Crooners, 6161 Hwy. 65, Fridley, $22-$32, croonersmn.eventbrite.com )

The movie "Newsies" bombed when it was released in 1992, but it slowly built enough of a cult audience to justify a Broadway adaptation that picked up eight Tony nominations. It has since become a staple in regional theaters, thanks to a family-friendly tone and timeless theme of the little guy (newsboys in 1899) going up against authority (Joseph Pulitzer). Artistry's artistic director Ben Bakken is staging the latest local production. Renee Guittar, one of the Twin Cities' most impressive choreographers, is also on board. (Thu.-Aug. 11. Thu.-Sat. 7:30 p.m., July 29, Aug. 7; 2 p.m. Sun.; July 27, Aug. 3 &10; 1 p.m. Aug. 8. Artistry, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington, $33.50-$51.50, artistrymn.org )

NEAL JUSTIN

The annual Dances at the Lake festival heads to the Rose Garden for two evenings of ballet, contemporary dance, tap, Japanese and traditional Arab dance forms and bharatanatyam. Organized by Ray Terrill Dance Group, the festival includes dances by the collaborative duo Alys Ayumi Ogura and Anna Andaházy Salazar; a piece by KASM Collective honoring the late Michele Rusinko, an associate professor at Gustavus Adolphus College who died in January; and performances by Kinetic Evolutions. With a mix of professional artists and students, the open-air event hosts performances in the idyllic floral setting. (7 p.m. Fri. & Sat., Lyndale Park Rose Garden, 4124 Roseway Road, Mpls. Free. dancesatthelakefestival.com )

SHEILA REGAN

In the world of Syed Hosain's paintings, fabricated and real narratives weave through the past and present, creating curious histories and re-examining colonialism and Middle Eastern geographies. Sometimes abstract and on canvas, other times working with found surfaces like old encyclopedias and history books, Hosain's work continues to reinvent itself. His solo show "Dust in the Sky" includes selected works from the course of his career. Ends Aug. 3 (Noon-5 p.m. Thu.-Sat. or by appt., Northeast Sculpture Gallery Factory, 1720 NE. Madison St. #14, Mpls., free, 612-743-6664 or ne-sculpture.org )

ALICIA ELER

Artists, activists and community organizers in the Twin Cities highlight what disability justice means today through various works of art. With a vision for making this place more equitable for those with disabilities, the show also focuses on artists of marginalized backgrounds, including disabled people who identify as people of color, queer, trans and immigrants. The opening night celebration features performances by local artists Said Shaiye, Molly Joyce, Alison Bergblom Johnson and Houa Moua. Opening night Friday at 5:30 p.m. Virtual streaming available. Ends Nov. 3. (10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thu. & Fri., 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat. & Sun, Mill City Museum, Commons Area, 704 S. 2nd St., Mpls., free, 612-341-7555 or mnhs.org/millcity )

The Stillwater community festival that pays homage to the logging industry in the historic city celebrates its 90th year. Leaning into the theme, there's a lumberjack camp, Paul Bunyan makes daily appearances and skilled professionals saw through logs in a lumberjack show. Creative home carpenters will navigate homemade vehicles during the Down Hill Derby. There's also live music on a floating barge, a parade, a medallion hunt and BMX stunt show. (5 p.m. Thu., 2 p.m. Fri., 7:30 a.m. Sat., 11 a.m. Sun, lumberjackdays.com )

Music + concerts, music + concerts | caroline jones talks motherhood, new record and joining zac brown band, caroline jones, member of the zac brown band, will take the stage at sofi stadium on saturday, july 20..

empire of the sun band tour

“It means a lot to me now that I have a baby, to stand up on stage and for my son to see that,” Jones shares over a recent phone call. “The gift of music and the community of music is something he’ll grow up around on this tour.”

Since taking on her new role as a mother, life for Jones has “done a complete 360, in the best way.” She’s now able to live the best of both worlds: nurturing her family while embracing the rockstar life. Although her touring roster is extensive—having performed with legends like Jimmy Buffett, The Eagles, One Republic, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Vince Gill, Kip Moore, Lee Brice, Sara Evans, and her dear friend Kenny Chesney —there’s something uniquely different, a rush of pure adrenaline she’s never quite experienced before, as she hits the road once more as part of Chesney’s Sun Goes Down tour, but this time with Zac Brown Band, stopping at SoFi Stadium on Saturday, July 20.

Country singer-songwriter Caroline Jones will take the stage at SoFi...

This moment in time also feels like a full-circle experience for Jones, who opened for Chesney’s Songs for the Saints tour across North America in 2019. Prior to that, she had toured extensively as a supporting act for both Brown and her mentor, Jimmy Buffett, which paved the way for her opening slot with Chesney. It’s an equally surreal experience for Jones, who has been a Chesney fan since her teenage years when she was just starting to dive into the waters of country music. Now, being able to share the stage with him every night is “a pinch-me moment.”

The country songstress joined Zac Brown Band in 2022, but her journey with them started years earlier. As their opening act, she had shared stages with the band on and off, weaving her melodies into their outings.

After the world began to recover from the pandemic’s quiet, Brown reached out to Jones with a proposition: Would she like to play with the band a few times here and there? Those few gigs turned into a permanent spot in the band, marking a significant milestone as she became the first female addition to the Zac Brown Band.

“I was so excited and so honored to take advantage of the opportunity,” Jones shares. “As a musician, to be on stage with the quality of musicianship, it was a surreal opportunity to learn from them, and to this day, I still feel that way; I’m still learning so much. I have so much to learn from every single one of them. They all have way more stage and life experience than I do, and soaking that up is key for me.”

Learning has been at the heart of her latest record, too. Last October marked the release of Jones’s third studio album, “Homesite,” a project that dives deep into themes of grit, resilience, and the journey of becoming a new parent. Featuring collaborations with familiar friends like Zac Brown Band and Vince Gill, among others, the 11-track album is a testament to her growth both as an artist and as a mother. Co-produced and written by Jones herself, “Homesite” weaves together stories of personal triumph and the evolution of her musical journey.

As Jones worked toward creating “Homesite,” she did so with a clear vision. Long before she began the physical journey of pregnancy, she was already writing songs about starting a family. For Jones, writing the album before becoming pregnant was a deliberate choice—encapsulating a chapter of life and ensuring it stood as a timeless ode. Tracks like “Homesite” and “Talking To Milo” capture Jones’s emotional grappling with the decisions that defined that pivotal period in her life.

“The themes that immediately come to mind for this record are grit and resilience, which are qualities you find through motherhood,” Jones said. “As you mature in this career and in life, you become accountable for your own choices and decisions. Some things go your way, and some don’t. But there’s a humility that comes with that, and a strength. It’s something that can only come with time and experience, especially in this industry, where there are so many highs and lows. It can be easy to second-guess yourself, especially with the influence of social media. We all feel those pressures. It’s about figuring out who you are and doubling down on that, and these are the big themes I wanted to carry within the record.”

SEE ALSO:  Jason Isbell says Hollywood Bowl show will be good. See, he’s learned how to sing.

Now, Jones feels more comfortable in her cowgirl boots than ever, with a renewed conviction to tour, play, and create for the world. Joining the Zac Brown Band has been an unreal experience, as she would put it, especially playing at large arenas like SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

Jones hopes to inspire others to believe that even the tiniest dreams can manifest into something real. With every note she sings and every stage she steps onto, she aims to give voice to those dreams, proving that perseverance and passion can break barriers and create lasting legacies.

“First and foremost, I hope to be an example for other women, not just through my words, but through my actions and who I am.  And if I can accomplish that, then I’m doing fine. It means the world to me.”
