Ariana Grande Announces Fresh Slate of Winter U.S. Sweetener Tour Dates

After Grande wraps the European leg of Sweetener in mid-October she's taking a few weeks off before closing out the year with more U.S. dates.

Ariana Grande is offically booked for the whole year. In the midst of a North American leg of her Sweetener Tour, the singer announced a fresh slate of U.S. dates on Thursday morning (June 20) that will keep her on the road through the holidays. The 19-date run is slated to kick off Nov. 9 with a show at the Nassau Memorial Coliseum in Nassau, N.Y., and run through a Dec. 21 gig at The Forum in Los Angeles.

Grande, who revealed to fans on Wednesday (June 19) that she has been battling through a bout of bronichitis during this week’s four-show run in New York, will wrap her North American run on Aug. 4 by headlining Lollapalooza in Chicago before hopping to London for a three-show run at the O2 arena (Aug. 17, 19, 20), crisscrossing Europe and winding up where she began with two more shows at the O2 on Oct. 15 and 16.

At press time, no opening acts have been announced for the November and December U.S. dates, which include shows in Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas and San Francisco. Tickets for the shows will go on sale June 26.

I'm so into the idea of seeing Ariana Grande perform on an ' Eternal Sunshine ' tour, I can barely breathe...but is it happening?

Last time Ariana Grande released an album, it was the pandemic and she told Zach Sang that she had no interest in touring ' Positions ' until it was safe to do so. She said that she didn't want to put her fans in any danger. Ariana also said that she liked touring ' Sweetener ' and ' Thank U, Next ' together and wouldn't do another tour until she had another album out.

Fast forward to 2024 and the Eternal Sunshine era is officially in full swing. Is Ariana Grande going on tour this year though? If she is, what are the tour dates, locations, ticket prices and presale codes? Here's what Ariana has said about it so far.

When is Ariana Grande going on tour?

Will there be an Eternal Sunshine Tour?

Talking to Zach Sang about a potential Eternal Sunshine Tour in February 2024, Ariana said: "I would love to do shows. I love being on stage. I miss being on stage. I miss my fans so much. That's the honest to god truth."

However, Ariana then admitted that she struggled with touring in 2019. She said: "I had a really hard time emotionally on my last tour but I think that's because of where I was at. Just like with music, I'm really excited to redefine my relationship to shows when I'm ready and to see what that looks like."

Ariana has since told Evan Ross Katz on the Shut Up Evan podcast that she intends to do a mini tour in between the two Wicked films. She said: "I think it would be a really lovely idea to be able to trickle in some shows in between the two Wicked films."

As opposed to a full out world tour in arenas, she added: "It would be a mini little sampling of shows. And it's something that my team and I are working on coming up with options for."

With this in mind, it appears that no tour is currently set in stone. However, Ariana may still do a small run of shows so bookmark this page for updates.

Ariana Grande tour presale codes: How to find a presale code for your country

As it stands, Ariana has said nothing official about a tour so far. A couple of fan tweets have gone viral suggesting that there is a tour presale access code in her website coding but these all appear to be fake with fans simply using it as a way to encourage people to buy Ariana's album. Nevertheless, if a tour happens, there will likely be a presale.

If Ariana follows in the footsteps of artists like Beyoncé , Taylor Swift and Harry Styles , she will probably have a Citi Verified Fan Presale in the US and an O2 Priority Presale in the UK. There may also be separate Live Nation and fan presales.

If Ariana does announce a tour, it would be wise to sign up to her mailing list to get any presale information as soon as it becomes available.

Ariana Grande tour ticket prices: How much will the tickets be?

Prices for an Ariana Grande Eternal Sunshine tour will likely depend on what kind of venues she performs in. Tickets for her last arena tour cost between $35 and $225. Based on her saying she'd like to do something smaller, there's a chance that venues will be smaller and tickets will be more expensive.

Eternal Sunshine Tour dates: When is Ariana Grande going on tour in 2024?

Again, there's no news yet on whether Ariana is touring so no dates are currently available but based on her comments it seems likely that it will be in 2025 if it happens. If she does tour in any capacity it will have to take place after official promotion for Wicked Part 1 starts. Wicked comes out in cinemas worldwide on 22nd November.

Taking this into consideration, any tour would likely start in the new year.

Ariana Grande tour locations: What cities will Ariana Grande play in?

While I think we would all like an Eternal Sunshine world tour, Ariana's comments suggest that whatever she does for Eternal Sunshine will be on a much smaller scale than Sweetener.

With this in mind, it's unlikely that there will be shows outside of the US and UK but she could have a livestream or filmed show planned.

Ariana Grande Eternal Sunshine tour setlist: What songs will she play?

Without any tour announcements, there's no knowing what songs Ariana Grande would perform on an Eternal Sunshine tour at the moment. Nevertheless, Ariana tends to heavily feature her recent projects in live shows, so expect lots of songs from Eternal Sunshine and Positions to feature alongside her biggest hits.

If Ariana does one-off Eternal Sunshine shows, it's also possible that she will opt to perform the album in full instead of a more traditional setlist.

Ariana Grande Announces 'Sweetener' Tour Dates Following Pete Davidson Split

Ariana Grande is hitting the road!

Just weeks after her split from fiance Pete Davidson , the 25-year-old "God Is a Woman" singer has announced her upcoming Sweetener World Tour . The tour is in support of her album, Sweetener , which debuted in August.

The just-announced first leg of the tour will kick off in Albany, New York, on March 18 and conclude at Madison Square Garden in New York City, three months later on June 18. Hitting more than 40 cities in the United States and Canada, the North American dates will be followed by a yet-to-be-released international leg.

Tickets will go on pre-sale for American Express Card Members on Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. and continue through Nov. 3 at 10 p.m. General sale has yet to be announced.

Grande shared the news on Twitter, with the tour's poster and a video featuring all the cities where she'll stop.

The exciting announcement follows a hard few weeks for the singer, who split from Davidson , 24, just over a month after her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller , died of an apparent overdose . Miller and Grande split earlier this year and the "No Tears Left to Cry" singer quickly began her whirlwind romance with Davidson.

Grande got engaged to the Saturday Night Live star in June, before the pair called it quits in October . Since the breakup, Grande has canceled appearances and taken to social media with a post in honor of Miller and another about getting "rid of toxicity."

Earlier this week, Grande told fans in a since-deleted tweet that she was "ready" to go on tour. 

"I'm ready. My heart needs it," she wrote in response to a fan. "Actually finalizing a few more things but I'm tryna get em dates to u asap."

A day later, she expanded on that, writing that music "fixes everythin[g]."

On Wednesday and Thursday, she teased fans that the announcement was imminent in a series of tweets.

Rider Demands: What singers ask for on tour

From the bizarre (bendy straws, a wig room and a square melon) to the sweet (compulsory charity donations and postcards for their kids), we look at what the stars request to help them deal with the stresses of being on the road.

Sam Smith may be a humble guy, but even the most down to their celebs have a few pre-show demand. "I don't ask for puppies in my dressing room," he told the BBC. "But sometimes - and I'm really embarrassed about this - when they're doing my make-up before I go onstage, people do up my laces for me." He also admitted that after hanging out with the likes of Beyonce and Taylor Swift, and jetting off to world premieres of Bond flick, Spectre (for which he wrote the Oscar-winning theme), the Brit star did get a bit sucked into the A-list lifestyle. "I did get a bit… I wouldn't say big-headed, but I was living in that scene way too much, and I needed to be brought back down to earth," he said. ""There was one time when I wore a new pair of pants every day and threw all the old ones away. I got obsessed with wearing different pants every night."

Lucky for some, aye!

Britney Spears

Ms Spears ’ requests have altered over time. She used to ask for comfort food like fried chicken, Cheetos and Red Bull for when she came off stage. Now that’s all changed and junk food is banned from her dressing room; however, she does still ask for a framed photo of Princess Diana.

Of course Kanye West isn’t going to ask for your average fare. The singer likes backstage to be decorated all in white and has some special requests for when his daughter North West joins him. She needs an $8K bed, a TV preloaded with her favourite shows and a personal chef in case she wants a gourmet snack while Daddy’s off performing.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is known to like everything to be just so: her requirements include kittens, no harsh lighting and Cristal, things we totally get. But there are a few slightly stranger demands: she asks for bendy straws, two air purifiers, an assistant whose sole job is to get rid of her gum and another to help her on the staircases (well, she does wear some epic heels!)

David Hasselhoff

We’re not sure why David Hasselhoff requires a life-sized cut-out of himself in his dressing room but apparently he does.

We think Lady Gaga might be having a bit of a joke here: her rider demands include a mannequin with puffy pink pubic hair, posters of Queen and peanut butter with flax seed that has no more than 4 grams of sugar. She also very sensibly likes her and her dancers to stay hydrated and asks that the green room to be stocked with 28 water bottles at room temperature and 28 chilled.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez must really like white because she asks for roses, furniture and candles all to be this colour. The requirement doesn’t stop there: her food needs to be white too. She’ll be having lots of white fish then.

Christina Aguilera

It’s not easy being a judge on The Voice so Christina Aguilera asks for a masseur to be on call to rub her feet (again, the heels!). She also likes to have soy cheese, an organic food spread without plastic or Styrofoam and water but "NOT Evian". But it’s not all good, healthy stuff: she also likes Nesquik on set. Like us, there’s nothing Christina hates more than sitting in a traffic jam but, unlike us, she can actually avoid it. The singer asks for a police escort because "under no circumstances are the vehicles allowed to encounter any delays due to traffic".

Not all rider demands are ridiculous. As if we could love Adele any more, apparently she requires anyone receiving a free ticket to her show to donate a minimum of $20 to Sands, the UK stillbirth and neo-natal death charity. And that is compulsory.

Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters win the prize for funniest demand. The ask that their tour rider include only vegetable soups, “because meaty soups make the roadies fart.”

P Diddy must be very clean by the time he goes on stage because his rider demand is modest: 20 bars of soap.

Ariana Grande asks that any photographs be taken on her left side only.

We don’t know what LL Cool J gets up to in his dressing room but he requires two long-stem roses and a bottle of baby oil to do it.

Coldplay has the most heartfelt demand: postcards to send home to their kids from each city that they tour in.

Cher is known for her penchant for wigs so we weren’t really surprised to hear that she requests a “wig room” backstage. Considering all the wigs that the singer wears, our hearts go out to the venues’ security staff, especially as they have been briefed: "Cher and her managers are not accustomed to wearing their passes once they have arrived backstage. Please be aware of this and brief security as to their identity."

Just be glad that you’re not working for Slash. On his last tour, the Guns ‘n’ Rose star asked for a square melon (does such a thing even exist?), seven different types of cheese and two pots of honey but they had to be in the shape of a bear.

Justin Bieber

The Biebs has quite an eclectic array of demands when he’s touring, including herbal teas for his pipes, peanut butter and cheese Ritz Bits and Swedish fish. Of course an assortment of his trademark white T-shirts is also on the list, as well as the instruction that no one talk to him directly which seems a little harsh.

Eminem ’s requests are relatively simple. Not. He requested a full pond of koi fish while on tour in Ireland recently.

John Mayer is apparently very concerned about dental hygiene. The singer asks that there are four soft-headed toothbrushes, a bottle of Listerine, two small tubes of mint-flavoured toothpaste and two packs of Altoids mints backstage. Or maybe it’s just because he also requests the sugary kids’ cereals Count Chocula and Cap’n Crunch.

Iggy Pop’s tour demands stretch to 18 pages and include that his backstage quarters should be made to "look less like a typical rock & roll dressing room". Most shocking though is the request for a pack of cards. Sounds innocent enough until you read this: "For me... in case one of the band's girlfriends fancies a quick game of strip poker while the band are on stage.” Seriously, this has to be a joke.

Ariana Grande Hopes to Squeeze in 'Mini' Tour Between Her Wicked Films: A 'Sampling of Shows'

Ariana Grande knows fans are clamoring to hear Eternal Sunshine live, and fret not, she’s working on a plan to make that happen.

The pop star, 31, discussed her vision for touring the new album — which dropped on March 8 — during the July 9 episode of the Shut Up Evan podcast. According to her, nothing has been set in stone just yet, but in an ideal world, she hopes to hold concerts for the LP in between the release of her upcoming Wicked movies .

“I still want it, too,” Grande told host Evan Ross Katz of kicking off a new tour. “I think it would be a really lovely idea to be able to trickle in some shows in between the two Wicked films. I think there’s a version of that that exists.”

The singer also shared a disclaimer that her yet-to-be-confirmed tour will not follow her traditional route “for a multitude of reasons,” noting that it’ll likely be a “mini sampling of shows” instead.

“I do think it’d be really nice to do that,” she added, “and it’s something my team and I are working on coming up with options for.”

No dates have been set for Grande’s tour yet, but fans do have something else to look forward to: another Eternal Sunshine deluxe album. Although the Grammy winner told Ross Katz that the updated LP won’t be a “super deluxe,” it’ll “definitely” feature brand new tracks she’s written recently.

“I’m really just tempted to put a creative button on this storytelling and I have a lot of ideas,” she explained of the forthcoming project. “And when I have a lot of ideas, I just have to follow them.”

Don’t expect the deluxe album to arrive “any time super soon,” though. According to Grande, she still wants Eternal Sunshine to “live in this current state a little while longer” while she works to make its follow-up “as special as it can be.”

“I have specific ideas, and I’m going to take my time to make them beautiful and perfect and then we’ll see,” she added. “I’ll let it be a surprise!"

On Sunday, July 7, the “Bye” singer celebrated the four-month anniversary of her seventh studio album — her first full-length release in nearly four years — with an Instagram reel of her album highlights, plus some never-before-seen studio footage.

“Wanted to share a few more of my favorite eternal sunshine studio memories. these make me so happy,” Grande wrote in a caption. “i cannot believe how much has happened already or that it has already been (and only been) four months. so grateful for all of the beautiful eternal sunshine memories so far and for all that is to come! love you all so.”

Since releasing her album, the Positions artist has treated fans to remixes of her hit songs, including “ yes, and? ” featuring Mariah Carey and a spin on “The Boy Is Mine” with Brandy and Monica , which arrived on June 21. Next, she stars alongside Cynthia Erivo in part one of Wicked , which hits theaters on Nov. 22. Part one is set to debut on Nov. 26, 2025.

The Capital FM radio host has claimed the pop megastar always requests a personal lavatory seat on her rider.

Speaking about the bizarre things artists request on their tour riders at Capital's Summertime Ball with Barclaycard at Wembley Stadium on Saturday (13.06.22), Roman spilled: "I heard Ariana Grande brings her own toilet seat with her [on tour] and ArrDee wanted only the pink starbursts from the bag in a bowl."

On her last tour, the 'God is a Woman' hitmaker was sick with bronchitis for four months.

Ariana embarked on the 'Sweetener World Tour' in 2019, and later revealed she was suffering from a nasty bout of the condition - which can cause a persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, a low fever, and chest tightness - for almost half of the 10-month run.

She said last October: “I was sick for four out of 10 months on the ‘Sweetener’ tour, thankfully I only had to cancel one show or two…”

The 28-year-old singer played to over 1.3 million people across 97 concerts and had cameras follow her backstage as well as capture the performances of her biggest hits, such as '7 Rings', 'Side to Side' and 'No Tears Left to Cry'.

In December 2020, the pop megastar released the tour film, 'excuse me, i love you', as a "love letter" to her fans.

With a runtime of 1 hour 37 minutes, the Netflix flick captures some of the highlights of the tour.

Announcing the film on Instagram at the time, Ariana wrote: "dec 21st, a year after closing, the sweetener world tour is coming home to u @netflix @netflixfilm releasing this as a love letter to u all, in celebration of all that we’ve shared over the past few years. i know this project only captures some of one tour (out of all the other hundreds of shows and moments we have shared over the past six or seven years… jesus lol) but i just wanted to thank u all for showing me more in this lifetime already than i ever dreamed of. making music and doing all of this has been all i’ve known or fully given myself to consistently for a very long time now. although my heart is looking forward to a change of pace, i wanted to express again just how eternally thankful i am.

An artist rider is part of the performance contract put together and signed by a performance artist and the event promoter. During the booking process, the promoter will receive complete rider with all requirements (such as security, meals, parking, broadcast rights, interviews, meets and greets). Sometimes you can find leaked artists riders but they are usually not displayed in public. I believe Ariana has a long list of demands in her rider such as – photographers can shoot only from the left side of her face and not to use natural light or journalists can’t ask her about certain topics from her private life (about ex-boyfriends, family, etc). Since Ariana Grande 's debut in 2013, she has embarked on four concert tours (three of them worldwide), and TV and award shows performances. She promoted her debut album Yours Truly in 2013 and 2014, through performances at several award ceremonies and television shows, including the Wango Tango , the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and Grammy Awards . Grande has served as an opening act for Justin Bieber on selected dates of his Believe Tour in 2013.

In 2013, she embarked on her debut concert tour, The Listening Sessions , which only visited North America and grossed over $679,360. She embarked on her first world tour and second in general The Honeymoon Tour in 2015 to promote her second studio album My Everything . The tour visited North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. At the end of 2015, the tour placed at number 40 on Pollstar's "2015 Year-End Top 100 Worldwide Tours" list, grossing $41.8 million from 88 shows with a total attendance of 808,667. [1]

Grande's next tour was named the Dangerous Woman Tour , which began in February 2017 and ended in September 2017 visiting North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Oceania. In December 2017, it was reported that the tour had grossed over $71 million. [2] On May 22, 2017, after Grande's concert at Manchester Arena, a suicide bomber killed 22 concert-attenders . In response to the terrorist attack, Grande and her team organized a benefit concert named One Love Manchester . The concert was retransmitted in different TV channels such as BBC. The concert averaged 10.9 million viewers on BBC One, peaking at 14.5 million viewers. On August 8, 2018, Grande announced The Sweetener Sessions , her first promotional tour in support of her fourth studio album, Sweetener . In September, due to the death of her former boyfriend and rapper Mac Miller and other "emotional problems", the tour got postponed, and almost scrapped. [9] Later that month, Grande tweeted about her fourth concert tour saying: "like maybe i’ll do a mini one. i cant do what i did last time right now". [10] Due to emotional issues, the singer took a break from the public eye, cancelling some performances and public appearances to "spend some time with herself". [11] [12]

In October 2018, Grande announced her fourth concert tour, the Sweetener World Tour , in support of both her fourth studio album, Sweetener , and her fifth studio album, Thank U, Next . It began in March 2019 in North America, with dates also being announced in Europe. ARIANA Grande has revealed she's planning to hit the stage again and go on tour.

The pop singer announced she's preparing for a "mini tour," but many fans weren't pleased with the news.

Ariana , 31, teased her tour during an appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast , where she discussed her latest album, Eternal Sunshine.

She hinted to listeners that the tour would happen soon, but it will be different from the performances she usually delivers.

"I think it would be a really lovely idea to trickle in some shows in between the two Wicked films," the Thank You, Next singer shared, mentioning her starring role in the highly-anticipated Wicked movies, the first debuting in November 2024.

"I think there's a version of that that exists definitely for a multitude of reasons. [It's] not gonna be a tour in the way that I used to tour. It would be a mini, little sampling of shows, I think," Ariana added.

After the episode aired, fans expressed their frustrations that Ariana's return to the stage wouldn't be the extensive world tour they hoped for.

"I'm in such a bad mood. Ariana Grande you ruined my day," one fan wrote on X .

"Take note that 'mini tour' means one tour in 2025 and one in 2026, less dates per year, in numbers of shows not in 'performance level' u know what i mean," said another.

"Literally just woke up and I’m already crying over this mini tour," admitted a third.

Ariana hasn't been on tour since her Sweetener World Tour wrapped in December 2019.

Instead, she's been focusing on her Wicked debut and other projects close to home.

Last month, the pop star addressed chatter that her voice sounds different than it did in the early days of her career.

Fans particularly noticed the change during a sit-down with Penn Badgley on his podcast Podcrushed .

Ariana responded to social media comments about the apparent voice switch on the episode, saying it was caused by "habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health. i intentionally change my voice placement (high / low) often depending on how much singing i'm doing."

"I‘ve always done this BYE," the God Is A Woman singer added in a comment on a TikTok.

Ariana broke out in the showbiz industry when she was 14 years old, starring on the Nickelodeon show Victorious.

She released her first single, Put Your Hearts Up, in December 2011 and catapulted to massive fame.

Could there be an ‘Eternal Sunshine’ tour in the future? Ariana teased a ‘mini sampling of shows’ during a new interview.

Ariana Grande hasn’t been on tour since 2019 when she embarked on her Sweetener World Tour,  but that might change. Even though the pop star has been booked and busy ahead of the premiere of Wicked and after releasing her latest album, Eternal Sunshine , she teased the possibility of a “mini” tour. So, when could her string of concerts happen?

Hollywood Life has rounded up everything that Ariana said about a possible Eternal Sunshine tour.

Will There Be an ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Tour?

During a July 2024 appearance on the “Shut Up Evan” podcast, Ariana said she wants to embark on a “mini” tour after part 1 of Wicked hits theaters in November.

“I still want it, too,” she said. Adding that it would “be really nice to do that,” Ariana noted that this is “something my team and I are working on coming up with options for.” Nevertheless, a tour has not been confirmed yet.

When Would the ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Tour Happen?

Ariana Grande Auditioned Five Times for WICKED Movie

Grande plays the character of Glinda in the film.

In a new interview with the Associated Press , director Jon M. Chu shared some new insights into the casting process of the highly anticipated film adaptation of Wicked.

“Ari, she came in five times for us," he said of Ariana Grande 's audition for the movie. "Every time, she was the most interesting person in the room. I resisted. I was like, ‘There’s no way Ariana Grande , the person we think of, can handle this, carrying a movie, her first movie.’" Despite his initial reservations, Grande was offered the role of Glinda the Good Witch. "Wait until you see her in this," Chu added. "She will blow your mind and break your hearts.”

Similarly, he discussed Cynthia Erivo , who he says impressed him with a performance of The Wizard and I: "What I didn’t know was how vulnerable she could be." Erivo plays Elphaba in the film.

Producer Marc Platt was also interviewed for the piece, shedding a bit more light on the decision to split the movie into two parts, with the first film focusing on Elphaba (Act 1 of the show) and Part Two centering more on Glinda.

“That structure and those journeys made it that much easier to see, oh, there’s two different stories,” Platt said. Part One of the film will be released on November 22, 2024, with the second part hitting theaters on November 26, 2025. Read more at Associated Press .

The Wicked film adaptation stars  Cynthia Erivo  as Elphaba and  Ariana Grande  as Glinda. Joining them is  Jonathan Bailey  as Fiyero,  Ethan Slater  as Boq,  Michelle Yeoh  as Madame Morrible, and  Jeff Goldblum  as the Wizard. 

Marissa Bode will portray Nessarose, Elphaba's younger sister. The cast of characters also includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).  Aaron Teoh  joins as Avaric with Michael Carmichael as Nikidik. Emmy-Winner Peter Dinklage is set to play Dr. Dillamond in the film.

The pop megastar has teamed up with the world-devouring videogame to craft a unique experience that puts her at the heart of its colourful universe

If you’ve ever wanted to see Ariana Grande ride a unicorn while listening to ‘R.E.M.’, you’re in luck. With Grande appearing on Rift Tour – a musical journey where the pop megastar and cult favourite online survival game Fortnite merge – that’s just one of the many magical situations Grande (and you) get to enjoy.

And at Fortnite ’s Rift Tour event on Thursday at the Skylight Modern event space in New York City, video game aficionados are able to get a first look. While stationed at one of many socially distanced desks, we can use controllers to become Grande (should we choose that particular “skin”, an in-game costume) or sit back and watch on a big screen as the multiplayer game is projected, automatically pivoting users throughout the game’s carefully crafted world.

The Rift Tour is a significant outing for Grande, who collaborated visually on the project and leant her songs (but doesn’t actually perform live). It’s been nearly two years since she’s hit the stage. Since then, she’s released an album she has yet to tour – 2020’s ‘Positions ’, a sultry pandemic record where the pop singer stayed in her R&B comfort zone. But Grande’s collaboration with Fortnite gives fans a taste her in uncharted territory – and even her signature ponytail is along for the ride.

Fortnite first began embarking on the virtual concert experience in 2019 with electronic artist and producer Marshmello . While beginning as a more straightforward (though simulated) concert setup – a stage, a crowd, strobe lights – it’s since evolved into a dreamworld.

With The Rift Tour, developer Epic Games opted to forego a more traditional in-game concert setting – like Travis Scott ’s Astronomical event – in favour of an interactive, world-hopping adventure full of pastels, celestial lighting and rainbows. While the ‘concert’ itself is only around 10 minutes long, a medley of Grande’s hits – including 2013’s ‘Yours Truly’, 2016’s ‘ Dangerous Woman’ and 2019’s ‘Thank U, Next,’ as well as ‘Positions’ – soundtrack the majestic realities seamlessly. Cued by the singer’s crystalline vocals on ‘Sweetener’ intro ‘raindrops (an angel cried)’, NME is transported through the Fortnite galaxy to a lush field of pink Petals with dancers swaying on bubbles. Quickly, though, we find ourselves swept away by the pulsating synths of Grande’s self-soothing club-ready anthem ‘Be Alright’ while venturing through the area surrounding a magical castle.

Perhaps the most enjoyable moment of all comes when the aforementioned unicorn appears and, as we travel on a rainbow-coloured road atop the heavenly creature, Grande’s breathless vocals on ‘R.E.M.’ – a song about the state between dreams and reality – fittingly soundtracks our ride. It isn’t long before we step into a simulated world where an enlarged version of the singer becomes a judge flexing her gavel outside of a courthouse while , ‘The Way’, her lovesick hip-hop collaboration with the late rapper Mac Miller , plays in the background.

The real showpiece of the event, however, comes when the pop star emerges from an actual planet, an angelic Grande bursting from the cracked surface, the woozy, sex-positive single ‘Positions’ echoing around her. Even in the gaming world, Grande knows how to make an entrance.

The megastar’s Rift Tour comes at a perfect time, as live music has yet to fully come back. While concerts are gradually returning, the uncertainty of COVID remains. Seeing Grande appear in Fortnite – in a custom landscape with her flourishes in its world-building moments – is an appealing alternative to livestream sets. Grande’s Rift Tour might be much shorter than a normal concert, but feels like a trip to a candyland that’s worth every second. And its interactive element makes it almost as fun as – and more futuristic than – any IRL gig.
