Farragut Forward: A Star Trek Fan Production
Welcome to the final frontier…
The prologue to Farragut Forward was released January 27, 2022! See it HERE !
In june 2021, kaotica studios announced a partnership with farragut films, one of the longest-running and most beloved star trek fan productions. .
The result of this collaboration is Farragut Forward: A Star Trek Fan Production, the continuation of Starship Farragut adventures, set in the “monster maroon” world of the 1980s Star Trek movie era.
Preproduction began in summer 2021 in accordance with the Fan Film Guidelines issued by CBS/Paramount. At this time, several key production decisions were made on the production’s tone and visual style, including the costumes, and an emphasis on filming practical ship models as an homage to the 1980s era of sci-fi filmmaking, and to the early days of Industrial Light and Magic (ILM).
Producer and Farragut Films founder John Broughton had this to say: Fans can expect a more ‘sophisticated’ version of Farragut… a darker, more serious side. After a recent camera/lighting test, Johnny said, “This isn’t your Daddy’s Farragut!” He’s right, and my expectation is that our fanbase will be highly impressed, wanting to see more with new fans following.
THE PROLOGUE
After pre-production concluded in the summer 2021, cameras rolled on the Farragut Forward prologue in October 2021. The single set was a very small room (roughly 10′ by 10′), which was packed full of lights, gear, smoke, and at some points more than 10 members of the cast and crew.
Filming was originally planned for two days, but thanks to the hard work of the cast and crew, production wrapped in a single 12-hour day, including a full tear-down and rebuild of the set midday.
The three-minute prologue was a lot of work crammed into a very tight production period. It took many of our actors several hours to get into their costumes, prosthetics, and makeup, so instead of coming back and doing it all over again on the second day of filming, everyone pushed to wrap the shoot in a single day. We even tore the set down at lunch and rebuilt it for the turnaround shots. It made for a very long day, in a very cramped set, but the results were well worth it.
– Director Johnny K.
With principal photography wrapped, editing began and a rough cut was shown in November 2021 with all cast and crew seeing it for the first time together as a group. Sound design and visual effects shots were added and finalized soon after, including the filming of the practical Bird-of-Prey ship model, built by actor and model-maker Michael Bednar.
The prologue sets up the story for the full Farragut Forward episode, currently in pre-production and to be filmed throughout 2022 and 2023, with an expected release in early 2024.
Farragut Forward marks the return of of several classic characters from the Farragut universe, including John Broughton as Carter and Michael Bednar as Tacket. William Jay, Dale Henry, and Matt Henry play Klingon officers.
The Farragut Forward prologue features the track “War Drums” by Rhythm Scott, as well as music by Austrian composer Martin Puehringer.

A Fan’s Guide to the Best Star Trek Fan Films
Posted in these interests:
Pop Culture
When it comes to Do-It-Yourself projects, the ultimate expression has to be fan films . The amount of work required to pull off a fan film, from the construction of sets and costumes, to the writing, to the lighting, the camerawork, the acting, the direction, the sound design, the scoring… it’s a fabulously massive undertaking that requires an insane range of skills to even comprehend, let alone pull off with flare.
Star Trek has long encouraged a range of intrepid explorers in the field, however. Fans from all backgrounds and walks of life have come together over the decades to share their love of the magic underlying this incredible setting, trying to share what they themselves love most about Roddenberry’s incredible vision for a socialist future where all people work for the betterment of society as a whole, and their own self-growth, rather than the accumulation of profit.
So, sit back and engage your senses as you travel through time and space on some kind of star “trek” in a bold exploration of the imagination and the power of art.
1 – Digital Ghost (2000)
Digital Ghost is a German-made Star Trek fan-film set within the Star Trek: Generations timeline. The story involves two Enterprise-E crewmembers who are sent on a mission to test Starfleet’s new fully-autonomous starship design, and who soon discover that all may not be as it seems.
There aren’t magnificent sets in this one, but the CGI is surprisingly good, especially when you remember that this was made back in 2000. But, what stands out for me most with this film, is how well-acted it is. The CGI makes it all come alive, and there are some very clever moments in there, but what makes it engaging to watch is the interactions between the two visiting crewmembers and the experimental ship’s computer.
2 – Star Trek: Of Gods and Men (2007-2008)
There can absolutely be no better example of an incredible Star Trek fan-film experience than one which uses actual members of the original series cast! . Walter Keong and Nichelle Nichols star in this superb 3-part drama (finally combined into one feature film), and directed by Tim Russ (Tuvok in Voyager ).
The story, the acting, the sets, and the CGI all positively glow in this one. The care, dedication, fun, and love of Star Trek is so plainly visible in every aspect of this film that it easily outshines most of the modern Trek material created by big studios.
3 – Star Trek: Axanar (2014)
Here we come to the biggest name on this list, because it was a landmark film in the evil of corporate Hollywood and the further eroding of artistic power in the world. Axanar was an incredible production, providing a powerhouse script, production value far beyond anything seen before, and a huge cast of veteran Star Trek actors (Richard Hatch, J. G. Hertzler, Kate Vernon, Gary Graham, Michael Hogan, and Tony Todd).
The film is a 22-minute documentary-style experience recounting the events of the Battle of Axanar, which was briefly mentioned in the original Star Trek series episode Whom Gods Destroy, and depicted in Axanar as a decisive military engagement between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire.
The incredible feature film that had been planned for release was killed by the subsequent CBS/Paramount lawsuit, but this gem remains behind.
The film was so good, so popular, and raised such a huge budget on Kickstarter, that CBS and Paramount sued its creators in an attempt to destroy fans’ ability to produce similar work ever again. Sadly, they succeeded.
The resultant lawsuit ended with CBS/Paramount drawing up a restrictive list of rules that all future fan films would need to follow: “be no more than 15 minutes long and have no stories longer than two installments (for a total of 30 minutes); play on YouTube without commercials; and all participants are required to be amateurs who have never worked on Star Trek or another licensee of CBS or Paramount Pictures.”
This effectively killed off all Star Trek fan projects, forcing other planned productions like Star Trek: Renegades to quite literally go renegade and remove all references to Star Trek from their production.
It’s a truly sad example of how dismally copyright laws function in the world today, offering little protection to real creators while allowing mega-corps to demand ever-greater control over all the artistic projects that make it into the public eye.
4 – Star Trek: Renegades (2015)
Something is folding time and space around entire planets, cutting them off from the galaxy. Admiral Pavel Checkov (played by Walter Koenig) enlists the aid of Section 31 chief Tuvok (played by Tim Russ) in an effort to enlist an extra-Starfleet operation to discover the cause, a crew of misfits, even criminals, who can do what Starfleet can not.
Directed by Tim Russ, this was intended as a pilot episode for a new Star Trek series. When the pilot was rejected, a series was planned, but was later scrapped due to the disastrous move by CBS/Paramount to restrict the creative ability of fan productions. Renegades would then go on to live as its own science fiction production, removing all references to Star Trek to escape studio censorship.
A Fan’s Guide to the Top Science Fiction TV Series From one fan to another: the best sci-fi shows of all time.
5 – Star Trek: Horizon (2016)
In a time prior to the United Federation of Planets, a young coalition of worlds led by Earth battle the Romulan Star Empire for their very survival.
This was another masterful little fan production, falling someplace between grand productions like Axanar and Of Gods and Men , and more amateur productions, and offering a first-class homage to the Star Trek universe.
While the planned sequel was annulled by CBS/Paramount due to their ridiculous feud with the Axanar production, we at least have the full feature film original to enjoy.
6 – Chance Encounter – A Star Trek Fan Film
A gentle and heart-warming science fiction love story, with all original characters, set within the Star Trek universe.
The Most Underrated Science Fiction Films of the 1970s 1970s scifi films included some of the greatest ever made, but also some unsung gems.
Quite possibly the sweetest little fan film in existence, the team behind this film would later go on to create The Holy Core, another Star Trek fan film that went even farther in the creation of something superb.
I absolutely love the writing of this one, as well as the acting. The special effects aren’t as sharp and polished as other productions, but I found that this doesn’t really matter much given how superb the rest of it is, and how much range of special effects through the many decades of Trek there is anyway!
I spent the entire film immersed, enjoying it as much as I’ve ever enjoyed another Star Trek experience, and I think you will as well.
7 – What We Left Behind (2019)
Ira Steven Behr announced a new Deep Space Nine project in 2017, eighteen years after the series finale, What You Leave Behind , aired. Bearing the same title, this would be an immersive documentary journey into the creation of, and life of, the last great Star Trek series to air on TV.
The documentary is wonderfully potent, drawing back the cats and crew for an in-depth and sometimes harrowing discussion of the show’s making, with stars Alexander Siddig, Avery Brooks, Colm Meaney, Michael Dorn, Nana Visitor, Rene Auberjonois, and Terry Farrell all appearing to speak about their experience making the show.
DS9 was really transformational, managing to bridge all that had come before, with a deeper level of internal exploration than had been seen in Star Trek. Of course, there were downsides as well.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is a premise completely ripped off of J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5 series, which he had pitched unsuccessfully to Paramount some time before DS9 was put into production. Everything from the premise, to even at least one character’s name, was pulled from B5 without even a hint of shame.
And yet, however terrible that sin is, the seed of Straczynski’s initial vision, and the hard work of the amazing cast and crew of DS9, ended up providing Star Trek with its own brilliant jewel, something that offered a new type of show that kicks harder than previous iterations while maintaining the optimism, pacing, and theatric reverence that all embodies true Trek .
8 – The Holy Core – A Star Trek Fan Production (2019)
A thoughtful and exciting adventure set in the TNG era of the “Star Trek” universe, featuring all original characters. The crew of a Federation starship assist the deeply religious Vitans to restore their polluted atmosphere after centuries of war. Events soon take an unexpected turn, however, and the crew must rely on their courage and principles to prevent disaster…
I love this one for the use of real sets, the style, the lighting… it’s a love-letter to everything great about TNG, and manages to be both exciting and reflective in its story and construction. Proof that, while Paramount/CBS gutted fans’ ability to create work of Axanar level production value, fans will continue to showcase their passion for the source material.
Seriously though, this production uses full sets , and in an age where fan productions frequently rely on less-expensive green screen replacements, the use of real physical sets shows. It makes The Holy Core something unique and very special.
9 – Interlude: A Star Trek Fan Production (Axanar Continuity)
While not officially endorsed by the Axanar team, this little film dives into some of the Axanar continuity and envisions a short scene from one of the crucial battles of that timeline, as the new Klingon D7 cruisers are fielded for the first time.
It has a high-production feeling to it, though perhaps not quite as immerse as the original Axanar was. Still, a work of art, soul, and beauty, and I’m honestly just so impressed with all the great work that went into making this.
10 – Doomsday: A Star Trek Fan Production (2022)
Tales from The Neutral Zone in association with Avalon Universe presents “DOOMSDAY,” the third Star Trek Fan Film from Neutral Zone Studios in Kingsland, GA Based on the original story by Norman Sprinrad, music by Sol Kaplan, and visual effects by Samuel Cockings, “DOOMSDAY” is an exciting Star Trek adventure!
This feels like TOS and is just frankly incredible, offering up a brief vision of the original series’ brilliance with modern styling.

A new fan film called Star Trek: First Frontier has debuted online
By chad porto | sep 13, 2020.
Watch it while you can, a new free Star Trek fan film has hit YouTube.
Star Trek: First Frontier is an entirely new, original, and self-funded fan film that takes place in the time of the original show . Set in the same time-frame, with sets and uniforms dedicated to that era of Star Trek. It was directed by Kenneth Smith, with the entire film being self-funded by the director. It was released on Star Trek Day 2020 to add to the festivities.
Despite its production budget being very high for a Star Trek fan-film, there are issues that the director himself admits to. He attempted to fix everything but funds became scarce after Covid-19 hit, and the subsequent quarantining caused a financial issue in fixing some of the minor issues with the audio. Smith promises that the issues will be fixed in a special edition.
According to the director, you can find some special easter eggs in the film that were plucked from various science fiction films, that really does add a nice loving touch to the film. Smith also points out that this film isn’t meant to establish canon in the Star Trek universe, merely add something new to it. Hee also says that they spent special attention on following the canon that was given to them and was made in good faith, and with adoration for the original source material. It Clearly shows.
Despite admitted issues with some visual and audio stuff, the film looks well done and worthy of befitting a Star Trek name to the property. Of course, fan -made stuff used to be very common but ever since ViacomCBS started All Access, they’ve cracked down harder on fan-made content than ever before.
The director is encouraging everyone to download the video from YouTube just in case.
"This is the story of the initial launching of the Starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701 under the command of Captain Robert April with his wife, Commander Sarah April, the ship’s first Chief Medical Officer. Five Star Trek Fan Films You Should Watch Right Now
Star Trek is one of the franchises that popularised fan fiction. When the adventures of Kirk, Spock, Bones and the rest of the Enterprise ended on television, their exploits were kept alive with books, comics and an animated series, before they returned in several feature films. Fans have also kept the series alive by writing their own adventures for the Enterprise crew, or acting them out with their friends. With the rise of the internet, fans have places to show their love for Trek online, as well as upload their own additions to the universe:
Prelude To Axanar
Axanar represents an important moment in Trek history, both in and out of the universe. As the title suggests, this was a taster for a film centred around the battle of Axanar, the Federation’s first battle with the Klingons. Shot as a fictional documentary, it was designed to show that great fan films didn’t need huge budgets, as well as act as a showcase for the film itself. However, Paramount and CBS, who own the copyright, got wind of the efforts and threatened to sue the team. It was eventually settled, after harsh guidelines and restrictions on fan productions were introduced, but meant that the project would now be released as two 15-minute parts, rather than a 90-minute feature.
Star Trek- Horizon
Set in the prequel era of Star Trek: Enterprise, this impressive fan film focuses on the Discovery and its mission to help a Romulan defector and keep an ancient doomsday weapon out of their hands. While not the most original premise, the draw here is that, for a fan project, it’s very impressive. The effects are good for its small budget, and various elements from Trek canon make it feel like part of the universe in a seamless way. A sequel was planned but was reworked into an original project after the fan fiction guidelines changed.
Star Trek Continues
As Kirk says in the iconic intro to the original series, the Enterprise is on a 5-year mission. Although changes to the airing of episodes meant that the dates didn’t always go in order, the series chronicles three of those years. Star Trek Continues shows some of the events of the final year, giving the series a proper conclusion. The look and feel of the original series is lovingly recreated, with sets built from the original blueprints and filmed in the same aspect ratio. It also features a stellar cast including Mythbusters Grant Imahara as Sulu, and the son of original Scotty, Chris Doohan playing the role of his father. Many Trek alumni cameo, such as Micheal Dorn and Jason Isaacs. It also features cameos from other sci-fi projects such as former Doctor Who Colin Baker and Battlestar Galactica ‘s Jaimie Bamber.
A Long Way From Home
The Covid-19 Pandemic disrupted everyone’s daily life, with many people unable to work or leave their houses. Film and TV projects were disrupted, with many films delayed and series shortened. This fan film was made during the 2020/2021 lockdowns in the UK. With only a few actors and locations, this fan film manages to stand alone, whilst also featuring nods and easter eggs to many other series, and films both official and fan-made.
Of Gods and Men
An unofficial 40th Anniversary celebration, this mini-series focuses on Uhura and Chekov (with the original actors reprising their roles) as they find themselves in an alternate timeline where Captain Kirk was never born, as an act of vengeance from one of his enemies. Despite not being officially endorsed by the rights holders, it did have lots of coverage on the official website. As well as several former cast members reprising their roles from various instalments of the franchise, it also credits creator Gene Roddenberry’s son as an executive producer.

Section 31: Release Date, Cast, Story & Everything We Know About Star Trek’s First Streaming Movie
Where you've seen star trek: starfleet academy's cast before, tawny newsome defends starfleet academy as “real star trek”, says new half-hour comedy is “my dream of dreams”.
- Star Trek on Paramount+'s Discovery and Lower Decks are both ending in 2024 with each show's season 5.
- Paramount+ is rethinking its Star Trek strategy, focusing on made-for-streaming movies and only two live-action series.
- The future still looks bright for Star Trek despite these changes, with new Star Trek theatrical movies in development.
Star Trek is still going strong, but the 58-year-old franchise's upcoming TV and movie slate will have fewer series and new theatrical and made-for-streaming movies. 2022 was a remarkable year that saw a new episode from 5 new Star Trek series streaming on Paramount+ nearly every Thursday of the year. 2023 saw the critically acclaimed ending of Star Trek: Picard, the lauded Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, and Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, perhaps the best run of the animated comedy yet.
Star Trek is in a transitional period in 2024. Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks end with their respective season 5s , while Star Trek: Prodigy moved to Netflix and delivered an acclaimed season 2. Reflecting industry-wide changes in streaming content as well as the sale of Paramount to Skydance, Paramount+ is rethinking its Star Trek strategy , starting with an expansion into made-for-streaming movies that are designed to feel like blockbuster events. Paramount Pictures' Star Trek movies are also showing signs of life, at last. While more change is imminent for the franchise, the future still looks bright for Star Trek .
Star Trek: Picard season 3's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy , seems halted as showrunner Terry Matalas has moved to Marvel Studios and 20th Century films.
Star Trek Is Spread Out Across 3 Streaming Services Now - Where To Watch
The Star Trek franchise is split across three different streaming services in 2024. Here's where to watch your favorite Star Trek movies and shows.
7 Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5
The final season premieres october 2024 on paramount+..
Star Trek: Lower Decks is the last Star Trek series on Paramount+'s 2024 schedule, and it's also delivering its fifth and final season. Mike McMahan's animated comedy was creatively firing full phaser banks in Lower Decks season 4, promoting the Lower Deckers of the USS Cerritos to junior grade Lieutenants, homaging Star Trek: Voyager' s "Tuvix," visiting Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's new Ferengi Grand Nagus, and tying Lt. Beckett Mariner's (Tawny Newsome) backstory to the animated show's namesake, the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Lower Decks". Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5's teaser trailer premiered at San Diego Comic-Con:
Unfortunately, Paramount+ has opted to end Star Trek: Lower Decks with season 5, which premieres October 24, 2024 . This comes as a huge disappointment, especially considering how relatively inexpensive Lower Decks is to produce compared to Paramount+'s live-action Star Trek series. While a fan campaign has begun to save Star Trek: Lower Deck s, and there is preliminary talk of finding the animated comedy a new steaming home, the best way to boost Star Trek: Lower Decks' profile is to stream the previous four seasons and season 5 when it premieres in great numbers.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 - Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know
Great news: Star Trek: Lower Decks is coming back for season 5. Bad news: It's the final season of Lower Decks on Paramount+.
6 Star Trek: Section 31
The first made-for-streaming paramount+ movie premieres in 2025.
Originally planned as an ongoing series, Star Trek: Section 31 is now the first Star Trek original movie for Paramount+ . Star Trek : Section 31 is said to delve into the origin and secrets of Starfleet's insidious black ops agency. Star Trek: Section 31 will star Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh reprising her anti-heroine Emperor Philippa Georgiou, the former ruler of the Mirror Universe. Georgiou's new adventure places her in Star Trek 's 24th-century "lost era" and surrounds the Emperor with an eclectic new cast. Star Trek: Section 31's teaser trailer premiered at San Diego Comic-Con:
Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere in 2025 on Paramount+. Section 31 is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi from a screenplay by Craig Sweeny, and, if it's successful, could spawn sequels and a new wave of made-for-streaming Star Trek movies. Also starring Sam Richardson, Kacey Rohl, Humberly Gonzalez, and Miku Martineau, Star Trek: Section 31 promises an action-packed and "messy" adventure that will see classic Star Trek aliens the Chameloids and Deltans return.
Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh headlines Star Trek: Section 31, and here's what we know about Paramount+'s first Star Trek streaming movie.
5 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
The next star trek series is set in the 32nd century.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the next Star Trek series on Paramount+, with production beginning in late 2024 for a targeted 2026 premiere. Created by Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, who serve as co-showrunners, Starfleet Academy introduces a new group of cadets learning under the series' star and Academy Chancellor, played by Oscar-winner Holly Hunter. Paul Giamatti has also signed on in a recurring role as Starfleet Academy's main villain. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy introduced its young cast at San Diego Comic-Con:
Starfleet Academy will film on the largest set ever built for Star Trek , and will return the school to its original Earth location of San Francisco after the Academy reopened in outer space in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Kurtzman has also hinted at Starfleet Academy 's young characters questioning the decisions and even fixing the mistakes of past Starfleet Officers. Star Trek: Lower Decks' Tawny Newsome is also part of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's writer's room.
Star Trek's next series, Starfleet Academy, counts Academy Award-caliber actors and a crew of new faces in its growing cast.
4 Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 & 4
Strange new worlds gets 2 more seasons.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 wrapped production in May 2024 with an expected 2025 premiere on Paramount+. While Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere will pick up and resolve the Gorn cliffhanger of Strange New Worlds season 2 finale , season 3's episodes will see the return of directors Chris Fisher, Valerie Weiss, Dan Liu, and Jonathan Frakes, who is directing a Hollywood noir episode. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered a 5-minute clip of a season 3 episode directed by Jordan Canning at San Diego Comic-Con:
Excitingly, Paramount+ gave Star Trek: Strange New Worlds an early season 4 renewal , which essentially makes the series the new flagship of Star Trek on Paramount+ now that Star Trek: Discovery is over. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 will begin filming in Spring 2025, and that batch of 10 episodes will let Strange New Worlds help commemorate Star Trek' s 60th anniversary in 2026.
3 Untitled Star Trek Live-Action Comedy
Tawny newsome and justin simien are creating a new star trek show.
Also announced at San Diego Comic-Con is Star Trek' s first live-action comedy series. Created by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien, their upcoming Star Trek show is a half-hour workplace comedy set on a pleasure planet somewhere in the galaxy. Newsome was inspired by her lifelong Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fandom, and standalone Star Trek episodes of the past. While little is known about the series, a live-action comedy is a bold frontier for Star Trek.
Tawny Newsome talks about her work as a writer on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and hints at her dream job, Star Trek's first live-action comedy.
2 Untitled Star Trek Origin Movie
Premiering in theaters in 2025.
Paramount Pictures officially announced an Untitled Star Trek Origin Movie for a targeted 2025 premiere in theaters. Directed by Toby Haynes, who directed Star Wars: Andor and the "USS Callister" episode of Black Mirror, the Star Trek Origin movie is written by Seth Grahame-Smith ( Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) . The Star Trek Origin Movie is produced by J.J. Abrams and is set "decades before" Abrams' Star Trek (2009) . When, exactly, in the Star Trek timeline the origin movie is set, and what characters or starship it will be about, is all under wraps, although the film is reportedly set mostly on Earth and will deal with the founding of the Federation.
1 Star Trek 4
The final chapter of chris pine's starship enterprise crew is in development..
Reportedly still in development is Star Trek 4 , the long-delayed fourth Star Trek movie produced by J.J. Abrams starring the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Star Trek 4 has a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey, attempting to craft an adventure worthy of bringing Pine's cast back to the big screen after numerous failed attempts. Star Trek' s cast are all willing to beam back aboard the Starship Enterprise for their "final chapter", but the long wait for Star Trek 4 - which now stands at 8 years and counting - continues.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Star trek: strange new worlds.
Nearly a decade after Star Trek Beyond was released in 2016, Star Trek 4 is seeing progress toward becoming a reality . Billed as the "final chapter" of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek , the fourth film about the USS Enterprise led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk has a new screenwriter in Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant) . No director for Star Trek 4 has been named, but fingers are crossed that the Starship Enterprise of the alternate Kelvin Timeline will finally make its big-screen return. Star Trek 4 possibly releasing in 2026 would be an ideal way to mark Star Trek 's 60th anniversary.
Watch The 'Captain Sulu' Star Trek Fan Film That Put George Takei In The Big Chair
At the beginning of Nicholas Meyer's "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," Captain Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) is in command of the USS Excelsior, a prototype spacecraft with a newfangled transwarp drive allowing it to travel faster than any ship yet built. The Excelsior was first glimpsed in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," and Sulu, still serving on board the USS Enterprise at the time, stared at new the ship in utter awe. He couldn't have guessed at that moment that he would one day be its captain.
Sulu's captaincy gave the character a satisfying arc. When audiences first saw him in the original "Star Trek," he was a helmsman bearing the rank of lieutenant. In "Star Trek VI," made 25 years later, he was finally in command. If one accepts expanded universe lore culled from ancillary books and the like, Sulu would eventually become an Admiral and Commander in Chief of the Starfleet Command. Sulu's arc inflamed a Trekkie's imagination, picturing a broad series of adventures for Captain Sulu that we simply never got to see. The closest we ever came was a trio of audio adventures produced in 1994 and 1995, each starring Takei.
After the release of "Star Trek VI" in 1991, Takei announced openly that he'd like to star in a Captain Sulu TV series set on board the USS Excelsior, an understandable desire. Sadly, Paramount didn't have any serious interest in a Sulu series, and nothing was ever put into production.
There was one "sort of" pilot episode for a Sulu series, however, which was released in 2007. The fourth episode of the high-end fan series "Star Trek: New Voyages" not only posited a possible future for Sulu, but secured the participation of George Takei, reprising his role.
Takei played Sulu again in Star Trek: New Voyages
When it comes to fan films, "New Voyages" is perhaps one of the best ever made. The series, created by James Cawley and Jack Marshall is not officially canonical, but it's fun to pretend. The productions were slick, and the budgets higher than most fan films, and "New Voyages" attracted multiple former "Star Trek" actors to appear in their various projects (there have been ten episodes to date). In addition to Takei, "New Voyages" boasted appearances from Walter Koenig, Grace Lee Whitney , and Denise Crosby.
Legally, the fan series was allowed to persist thanks to a special agreement from Paramount, who said that "New Voyages" could use licensed characters and imagery, provided they make no money from the endeavor. It is truly a labor of love.
The fourth episode of "New Voyages," "World Enough and Time," was co-written and directed by Marc Scott Zicree, who recently posted the hour-long adventure on his YouTube channel . In a brief introduction, Zicree said that he always considered "World Enough" to be an unofficial pilot — maybe more of a proof-of-concept — for a potential Captain Sulu TV series. Although it had been 16 years since "Star Trek VI," Takei was still game to play Captain Sulu, and clearly there were enough Trekkies who wanted to see him back in the role.
Whitney also appeared as Janice Rand, and Majel Barrett's voice was used for the Starfleet computers, just like on the original shows. The episode also featured the character of Demora Sulu, Hikaru's daughter, previously played by Jacqueline Kim in 1994's "Star Trek: Generations." In "New Voyages," she was played by Mimi Chong.
Here's what we have instead of a Captain Sulu show
The story of "World Enough and Time" is a time-travel plot that involved two versions of Sulu, and was original conceived by co-writer Michael Reaves as a possible story for the stalled 1970s TV series "Star Trek: Phase II" (which would eventually morph into "Star Trek: The Next Generation" ). "New Voyages," it should be noted, takes place shortly after the events of the original "Star Trek" series, and featured a new cast of actors playing the familiar Enterprise crew. In "World Enough and Time," the young Sulu was played by John Lim.
The plot: The Enterprise encounters a trio of Romulan warships that attack one of its shuttlecraft. When the Enterprise retaliates and destroys the Romulan ships, it accidentally opens up a rift in time, and the young Sulu is sucked through. Scotty (Jeffrey Quinn) is able to beam Sulu back on board in moments, but wasn't fast enough, and Sulu appears back on the ship 30 years older. What was only a few moments for the Enterprise was a partial lifetime for Sulu on a distant planet called Caliban. Indeed, Sulu even has a new daughter, Alana (Christina Moses), whom he fathered on Caliban. She, too, is beamed through the space hole.
The episode ends with Scotty learning how to restore the younger Sulu, but he would need the older Sulu's body to do it. The older Sulu understands what is required, and seemingly sacrifices the last 30 years of his memories in order to be made young again.
It was the sight of Sulu on the bridge of the Excelsior with Rand that Zicree liked, though. It wasn't so much a Sulu pilot as a tantalizing taste of what might have been. A Captain Sulu series? The network wasn't interested, but it would have been great. Unfortunately, "World Enough and Time" will have to do for now.

Tom Hanks Is A Big 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' Fan, And Patrick Stewart Has Made A Wild Claim About His Love For The Franchise
Posted: October 23, 2024 | Last updated: October 23, 2024
Celebrities: they're just like us. That's what we hear all the time, anyway – but it isn't until a celebrity like Patrick Stewart writes a book and outs actor Tom Hanks as a massive fan of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" that we fully recognize the depths of that reality. Yes, one of America's greatest actors is a fan of "TNG" and a pretty big one based on a wild claim made by Stewart. "Making It So: A Memoir" is making headlines for various reveals from the actor, and this latest is a doozy. When discussing famous fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Patrick Stewart name-checks Oscar-winner Tom Hanks, who apparently watches a lot of "TNG." So much so that he can do something pretty impressive.

Fabulously flawless and consistently entertaining, the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks sails off with fervor in a bittersweet send-off that no doubt puts the state of the Star Trek franchise in flux. After all, this inventive series was part of the initial Paramount+ overhaul of the beloved Star Trek IP, coming off the success of Star Trek: Discovery. That was back in 2020. Since then, all things Star Trek have captured our attention — from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Prodigy to Star Trek: Picard. As we wait (and wait) for the Michelle Yeoh-led film, Star Trek: Section 31, and hope for another Chris Pine-helmed Star Trek 4 film, there’s a big creative void to fill if the franchise wants to find newfound success.
In the meantime, fear not. You can’t ask for a better adventure in the final season of STLD, which gives the ragtag crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos one last swirl of misadventures. The comedy is intact, perhaps sharper than ever, and the missions themselves either wrap up storylines from favorite characters met on away missions or the great core cast themselves.
Star Trek Lower Decks
The animated (literally and figuratively) voice talents of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O'Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman are on the mark. And under the command of showrunner Mike McMahan, the characters and, in essence, the series, receive the best kind of send-off possible. It's never been this good .
Great Fun Ahead but It's Hard to Say Goodbye
Part of the charm of STLD is that it's always been a celebration of an underdog crew, but this season moves these characters ever closer to being promoted out of the lower decks and into dynamic new Starfleet roles. Again, bittersweet, because the fun has been in watching these quirky characters attempt to come into their own. Audiences could relate to them. It may be a stretch to say it, but out of most Star Trek crews, the crew of STLD always seemed to spark the most consistent delight.
Star Trek: Lower Decks: 10 Reasons Why It’s the Perfect Starting Point For New Fans
Want to venture into Star Trek? Here's why Lower Decks is the best place to start.
The events filling Season 5 are a mish-mash of everything Star Trek fans have come to love about the show and the franchise, overall. There’s great fun as we’re led through various escapades. There’s a mission about patching up “space potholes” causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant, and that's pure fun. There’s an encounter with another Cerritos crew, in fact, and watching that mayhem play out and how the two sets of characters interact with each other is episodic writing at its finest. One of the best things to experience this go around is how well(ish) the characters of Lt. Mariner (Newsome) and Lt. Boimler (Quaid) evolve. Or, rather, come into their own, realizing that, sure, they actually do have a place in Starfleet, despite their foibles.
Meanwhile, there’s a fine mix of depth, passion, and justice given to the travails of Lt. Tendi (Noël Wells) this season. Early on, we find her fulfilling a mission on Orion, satisfying her Mistress of the Winter Constellations role. Don’t fret. Tendi eventually returns to the Cerritos, and that’s great fun, too. But the character’s alliance to her own culture, and helping her own sister is nicely wrapped up this season. It’s but one of many creative nuances that showrunner Mike McMahan intentionally employs to give all these characters a fitting wave goodbye.
Klingons, Aliens, and Mishaps
There's some great fun with Klingons this season, and it immediately draws attention back to whether Paramount would ever launch a Klingon-centric series. Back when the final season of Star Trek: Picard was playing out, fans were excited about a potential series surrounding the character of Worf (Michael Dorn), one of the more beloved characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation . Stay tuned on that front. But here, watching Lt. Mariner and Lt. Boimler engage in a Klingon pain ritual is pure delight. There's also a running gag with Boimler this season, and it's best to leave that for the viewers' eyes to track. It's yet another inventive touch the showrunner employs.
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Best Episodes in the Series (So Far), Ranked
Star Trek: Lower Decks follows the USS Cerritos, looking at those junior members who work well below the famed bridge.
If you're wondering whether Boimler will ever get the recognition he's craved for so long, there's a perfect opportunity for Commander Ransom (O'Connell) to send some love his way. A kind of bro-cation, perhaps? Even that outing turns sour, but it gives these two great characters yet another opportunity to interact with each other in a standout episode that does justice to their contentious relationship. Look for a nice wrap up, too, in Mariner's story arc(s). To be sure, Mariner has always been one of the series' standout characters. She and Boimler immediately became fan favorites and there's nothing finer than witnessing how many times this series bleeps out Mariner's (in essence, Tawny Newsome's) expletives.
Overall, the series shows us how each of its Lower Decks characters have evolved over time. T'Lyn (Ruiz), our favorite Vulcan, for instance, has always adhered to reason, but this season, she's shown she can evolve, too. And we've never tired of the human touches tossed in with the characters of Spock and Data in previous Trek endeavors.
Lower Decks Rises to the Top in a Breakneck Final Season
Elsewhere, the slew of alien pop-ins and various strange new worlds to visit add for a compelling final ride. The crisp editing of the series stands out, too, and overall, these storylines seem even sharper than before. One of the best things about animation is the creative room the animators have to create fascinating "effects" in this medium. The thrills arrive at breakneck speed here at times — from attempting to outwit a formidable "foe" that continually shows up throughout the Trek canon to laser blasts that pack a punch, and something visually sumptuous like attempting to sail through asteroid fields. It's all great fun.
10 Animated Series to Watch If You Love Star Trek: Lower Decks
Here are ten series to watch if you love Star Trek: Lower Decks, especially while you wait for the new episodes of Season 4 each week.
And with each passing episode, we're reminded how devoted this series is, and has been, to the Star Trek universe. From the get-go, STLD has wowed audiences with its humor, depth, and high-stakes situations. We also had the pleasure of that cross-over episode with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .
That said, looked at holographically, absorbing its full scope, we realize that it was one of the few series that managed to always outdo itself. And in a rare feat, it sidestepped creative fatigue to birth a final season that is practically flawless, leaving fans wanting more. We hope to see more of Boimler and Mariner, and other characters. Will we? This is Star Trek. Anything is possible. For now, enjoy the final ride. It's the best one from this hilarious crew yet. Season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks streams on Paramount+ October 24.
