Go Behind the Scenes of ‘The Hunger Games’
The road to Panem starts in North Carolina, where the first movie based on the bestselling book trilogy was filmed.
Ready to experience The Hunger Games ? You’ve come to the right place. The road to Panem starts in North Carolina, where the first movie based on the bestselling book trilogy was filmed. And with the release of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – Suzanne Collins’ prequel surrounding Coriolanus Snow’s rise from young man of means to cold-blooded tyrant – in 2020, there’s no better time to revisit the sites that stood in for District 12, the Capitol and the Arena.
This four-day itinerary, which loops from Charlotte to Asheville and back, leads to film locations, choice star hangouts and sites that connect to elements of the novel. It also notes training options to learn skills a Tribute could use.
Day 1: Charlotte, Hildebran & Asheville
Head out of Charlotte and drive an hour northwest to Hildebran, where the Henry River Manufacturing Co. once turned out fine-combed cotton yarns. At the abandoned Henry River Mill Village , filmmakers found a ready-made set for the Mellark family bakery and the Everdeens’ shanty. You can satisfy your curiosity about the place with a tour or visiting for a special event – or live like Katniss and stay overnight in one of the (lovingly restored) cabins.
If you're only stopping at Henry River Mill Village briefly, then continue on I-40 to Asheville , where the cast and crew were based during much of the summer shoot. This Appalachian city does right by everyone from the rich and famous to bohemians, outdoorsmen and dreamers – little wonder it suited the Hunger Games cast. Enjoy lunch at Laughing Seed Café , a vegetarian restaurant where the actors dined, and contemplate the choices for an active afternoon – or stay another day and you can do it all.
Craggy Pinnacle Hike
The North Fork Reservoir, where the Cornucopia scenes were filmed, is off limits to the public, but you can see the lake from the Craggy Pinnacle Trail, accessed at the Craggy Gardens visitors center on the Blue Ridge Parkway northeast of Asheville. Follow the law and stick to the established trail to minimize damage to the environment.
Lower Douglas Falls Hike
Filmmakers went to Pisgah National Forest’s Coleman Boundary area (aka Big Ivy) to shoot pre-Games scenes of Gale and Katniss. No guarantee this is the exact spot, but it’s a good place to channel the characters’ connection to the teeming wilderness. Please exercise caution and obey all rules and warnings posted at mountains, waterfalls, forests and parks.
Navitat Canopy Tour
Think of Rue soaring through the treetops as you attach the zip line harness for a three-hour eco-adventure at Pisgah’s edge. Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) made the trip three times (once at night and once with then-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens), and six other Tribute players soared here too.
Return to Asheville, check into your hotel (the lead trio stayed at Hotel Indigo , others at the DoubleTree by Hilton Biltmore ) and set out for Wasabi , a favorite Tribute restaurant.
Note: Katniss spent years learning the skills that helped her survive. Begin your own training with wilderness survival courses and workshops at Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City (a little more than an hour west of Asheville).
Day 2: DuPont State Recreational Forest
Order breakfast from Early Girl Eatery , where Entertainment Weekly interviewed Hutcherson for its “Men of The Hunger Games ” spread (your server might know how he likes his eggs). Stop by Malaprop's Bookstore/Café , a quintessential indie bookshop that championed The Hunger Games trilogy well before the cast came by.
Drive to DuPont State Recreational Forest , a magnet for mountain bikers, hikers and nature lovers. In the dramatic landscapes of waterfalls, hideaway lakes and fishing streams, try to spot both Katniss’ pond and the place where Peeta camouflaged himself. Triple Falls , Bridal Veil Falls and the covered bridge at High Falls are among the visual highlights, and sharp eyes might spot black bear, deer or wild turkey. Sightings of tracker jackers and mutant wolves are unconfirmed.
An uncommonly cool mountain town waits at the end of the trek. Brevard features a compact downtown with irresistible shopping ( O.P. Taylor's , Theophilus , DD Bullwinkel's ), galleries ( Number 7 Arts ), culinary treats ( The Square Root , Bracken Mountain Bakery ) and Brevard Brewing (plus three more breweries within 4 miles). Brevard might be off the Panem radar, but you can bet Rue would be drawn to the music that rings out almost every night.
Day 3: Shelby & Charlotte
About 80 miles east of Brevard, the unassuming town of Shelby might boast the world’s highest concentration of Hunger Games readers. The Reaping and Hob scenes were filmed in private warehouse space near the heart of town, which inspired the local library to use the book for its community reading program in 2012. If you have trouble picking out the buildings used in the film, or if you want to know where the paparazzi perched, ask somebody on Lafayette Street as you shop for Hob-worthy items – just as the crew did. For lunch, try Pleasant City Wood Fired Grill , which scored with the cast.
Allow 50 minutes for the drive to Charlotte , plus time to check in at your lodging (several of the stars stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte , crew members at the Dunhill Hotel ). If you’re anything like the actors, you’ll be drawn to the lively NoDa – as in North Davidson Street – neighborhood. Follow their example with dinner at Cabo Fish Taco or Boudreaux’s Louisiana Kitchen , and top off the night at Amélie's French Bakery , where Woody Harrelson joined regulars for a round of chess and whose delicacies even made an appearance in the train sequence.
Day 4: Charlotte
Caesar Flickerman would thrill to Uptown Charlotte’s modern architecture and urban sheen. Yet even in the shadow of corporate towers and art-filled plazas, the Capitol’s flamboyant fashionistas drew gapes as costumed extras entered Knight Theater for filming. The theater, Charlotte Convention Center and other venues might not be routinely accessed, but depending on events, you might get inside. Visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame , where it will dawn on you that hovercrafts have the same kind of seats as racecars.
The featured attraction on today’s itinerary is the U.S. National Whitewater Center . Imagine the Gamemakers creating the world’s largest recirculating whitewater river, a canyon to cross and a 46-foot rock to climb. Tributes could actually train here – the center offers extensive skills and survival classes. On a visit to ascend the wall, Woody Harrelson offered a glimpse of Haymitch’s capabilities in the Arena. Refresh and re-nourish at the River’s Edge Bar & Grill .

Great news! A ghost town near Asheville is coming back to life. The Henry River mill village has been abandoned since the 1970s. It came back to life briefly for the filming of the blockbuster movie The Hunger Games in 2011, serving as Katniss' home of District 12. Located about an hour east of Asheville along I-40 (near Morganton ), the village is open for guided tours, special events, and in 2021 you can now stay in the fully restored house #12! (See below) Future plans include a restaurant, museum, and more restored homes as vacation rentals.
The village Company Store (pic above) served as Mellark's Bakery in The Hunger Games. The movie, which stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, and Woody Harrelson, filmed nine days in Henry River. One of the mill houses was sacrificed during an explosion for the movie. While you can see parts of the village from the main road, come for a closer look during special events below.
The Henry River Preservation Fund non-profit group is holding events and giving tours to raise money to preserve the village. The store (pic above) and a house or two will be open for a peek inside. There are plans to transform the store into a restaurant that will feature recipes from the village!

Calvin Reyes and his family purchased the 72-acre village in fall 2017. They plan to continue converting the homes into vacation rentals and will open a restaurant in the former store. He loves to share the history of the village with visitors. We are lucky that he is saving not only the buildings but also the stories of residents that lived and worked there. Items found in the homes are being collected for the on-site museum in house 16, the home of heroine Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games.
Directions: Henry River is about 75 miles east of Asheville. Take I-40 East to Exit 119. Turn right and head south about a half-mile. GPS Address: 4255 Henry River Road, Hickory. Near the town of Valdese .
Henry River History
The Henry River Mill Village (or "District 12") was built as a planned community with its own textile mill, dam, water and fire-protection systems, and company store. Today most of the village's original buildings remain sited along a small gorge of the Henry River. The abandoned homes are dangerous inside due to collapsing floors. Stay on the main road since the area is closed to visitors except for events and Saturday visits.
In 1904 Michael Erastus Rudisill laid out the mill and village on a 1500-acre tract, chosen for its hydropower potential. The mill was incorporated as the Henry River Manufacturing Company and manufactured fine cotton yarns. In 1905, a 30-ft. reinforced concrete dam was constructed with a three-story brick mill building. The residential area of the village consisted of approximately 35 small worker's cottages. Twenty are standing today. The workers lived in boarding houses or workers' cottages built by the company, which were leased at nominal fees.
Since the loss of the main mill building, the centerpiece of the village today is the two-story brick company store building. This building served as a mill office with the upper floor used as a school room and for church services from 1907-1917. The Henry River Mill originally ran on water power. In 1914, a steam plant was installed and then in 1926, the mill was converted to electric power. In its early years, the mill operated 4,000 yarn-making spindles. By the time it shut down in the late 1960s, the mill had 12,000 spindles and produced fine combed yarn for lace. The mill was closed for several years and was purchased in 1976. Equipment and materials were stored in the mill building when it burned in 1977. Since then, the abandoned town has been slowly deteriorating. Fortunately, the new owners have great vision and plan to preserve as much of the village as possible.
The Hunger Games Film Locations
The Hunger Games takes place in an unidentified future time period after the destruction of North America, in a nation known as Panem. Panem consists of a wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts. District 12, where the book begins, is located in the coal-rich region that was formerly Appalachia.

The Hunger Games Locations in Atlanta, Georgia
The swan house at the atlanta history center.
Set in the Buckhead neighborhood, the 1928 mansion is Atlanta ‘s most famous, owned by the Inman family. The “Swan House,” as it is commonly known, was designed by architect Philip Trammell Shutze, who also designed nearby landmarks like The Temple and Henry W. Grady High School.
The home was used for exterior and interior shots as President Snow’s home, including the banquet scene in Catching Fire. The Swan House is open to tours as a part of the campus of the Atlanta History Center , which offers Hunger Games-specific tours that showcase Snow’s office and its remaining props.
The Goat Farm
Located in a complex of 19th-century industrial warehouses, the Goat Farm Arts Center is home to hundreds of artist studios. The buildings host film screenings, dance performances, and other events, but have also been used as the backdrop for countless film and television shows.
In The Hunger Games , this area was where the Justice building was set up, as well as The Hob where Katniss and Gale kiss. The arts center is open to the public, especially the in-house coffee shop.
Pratt-Pullman Yard
The Pratt Pullman Yard has ties to Atlanta ‘s industrial history, built in 1904 as a sugar and fertilizer processing plant. In 1926, the Pullman company bought the buildings to restore their iconic sleeper train cars. It was abandoned in the 1970s, briefly being used in the 90s before falling into disrepair and being covered in graffiti.
But it’s this look that made it perfect to be used as The Hob in The Hunger Games, along with scenes in Divergent and Baby Driver . The site was purchased in 2017 by a film producer and has started to host events like art exhibits and food trucks.
Atlanta Motor Speedway
Located south of Atlanta in Hampton , the Atlanta Motor Speedway is a 1.5-mile track that opened in 1960. It hosts a number of Nascar races every year but has also been used in films like Smokey and the Bandit and Logan Lucky .
In The Hunger Games , Katniss and Peeta make their entry into the Quarter Quell on this track. Visitors can check out the track during a race, during one of the many events like festivals and Christmas lights, or on a track tour .
Marriott Marquis Hotel Atlanta
One of the best places to stay in Atlanta , the Marriott Marquis Atlanta is an iconic building designed by John Portman. Built in 1985, it was once the largest atrium in the world, with a unique wave pattern. Located near Peachtree Center and countless attractions, the hotel has a spa, fitness center, and cocktail lounge.
In Mockingjay, the hotel’s futuristic interior served as the tribute quarters where Johanna Mason famously stripped down in the elevators. If you’re a guest of the hotel, you can see it up close, but the public can also admire the interior by grabbing a drink at the bar or attending DragonCon , one of the event’s host hotels.
Other Hunger Games Georgia Locations
Sweetwater creek state park, lithia springs.
Set in Douglas County only 15 miles from downtown, this state park has over 2,500 acres of hiking trails. The remains of the New Manchester Textile Mill, which was burned by Union troops, is a must-see. The park was used as a backdrop in Mockingjay, where Katniss and Gale sit by the river.
The park is open to day-trippers and overnight guests, where you can stay in one of the yurts. Don’t miss the LEED-certified visitor’s center, which has information about other film projects that used the park.
Chestatee Wildlife Preserve and Zoo, Dahlonega
The North Georgia zoo and wildlife preserve has over 100 species of rescued animals that call it home, including alligators, chimpanzees, and lions on 30 acres.
Volunteers educate visitors about animals. In Mockingjay, Katniss and Gale hunt elk in District 13, which was filmed in Chestatee. They’re open daily for animal encounters. It’s also near many of Georgia’s wineries .
Clayton County International Park, Jonesboro
This public park has a beach that was the site of the 1996 Olympics volleyball games as well as a lake, children’s water park, walking trails, and tennis courts.
In Catching Fire, the Quarter Quell was filmed on the beach, where the cornucopia was set up. The beach and the rest of the park are set to reopen after restoration in 2019.
Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake, Augusta
The dam on the Georgia-South Carolina state line overlooks a 71,000-acre lake, which is a part of Elijah Clark State Park. Built in 1946, the lake near Augusta is popular with fishermen and boaters, with rental cottages and campgrounds nearby.
The dam was used in a digitized version to show the train rides from the districts to the capital. The visitor’s center has information and programming.
The Hunger Games Locations in North Carolina
Dupont state forest, cedar mountain.
Full of stunning waterfalls and trails, Dupont State Forest near Brevard is just one of many natural settings in the North Carolina mountains that is worth a visit. The 7,600-acre forest was designated in 1996, purchased from the Dupont Corporation.
This park was used in the first Hunger Games film for a number of scenes, including when Peeta was in hiding after camouflaging himself. Dupont is open to visitors daily.
Henry River Mill Village, Hildebran
This now-abandoned factory town near Shelby was originally built to produce cotton yarns but fell into disrepair when the industry was no longer needed.
Left behind are simple wooden houses where workers and their families lived. The style was ideal for the sets of the Mellark bakery and the Everdeen home. Visitors can explore the village only by guided tour .
Charlotte Convention Centre and Knight Theatre, Charlotte
In the Queen City , the 550,000 square foot Charlotte Convention Center hosts countless conferences, trade shows, and events, but it was also used as the site of the Tributes’ chariot entrance in the Hunger Games films.
Nearby, the Knight Theater is a performing arts venue that is the permanent home of the Charlotte Symphony and the North Carolina Dance Theatre. Here, the tributes were interviewed by the outrageous Caesar Flickerman. The theatre is best seen while attending a performance.
