Behind the Scenes at the One and Only Bryant Denny Stadium

It is the heart of our one and only Tuscaloosa, visible from almost everywhere in town and the center of sports and fun: The University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium ! Home of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, it turns into the ultimate hotspot in town during football season. It doesn’t stop there, as it is a special location year-round! We’re going to show you why and take you on the behind the scenes tour through Bryant-Denny Stadium!

First view of the field on our Bryant-Denny Stadium tour

First view of the field on our Bryant-Denny Stadium tour.

For somebody who has never been to the stadium, even standing in front of it is mind blowing: The walls rise so high, you can’t seem to wrap your mind around this massive building! It was named after UA’s former president George H. Denny and longtime coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Entering the stadium at the south end zone, the first stop of the tour is the Donor Hall of Recognition, which is located right above the entrance. Here you can see all the generous donors that supported the UA Athletics Department with donations of one million dollars or more on beautiful portraits! The Crimson Tide Foundation itself gives away $16 Million of athletics scholarships every year, supporting young people in sports like football, baseball, soccer, golf, tennis, rowing and much more!

Next, on the tour you walk around the field on an upper level, getting a first glimpse on the field and the breathtaking view of Tuscaloosa from above the treetops! While on the upper level, we learned some interesting facts such as Bryant-Denny-Stadium was opened in 1929 and meanwhile has a capacity of 101,821 seats – which makes it the 8th largest stadium in the world! Also, during a game day, the stadium puts out 10,000 gallons of fountain drinks and 18.000 bottles of water to go with the concessions, leading to a total of 1 ton of trash!

Interns Deven Wilson and Ella Waldrop in the press box

Interns Deven Wilson and Ella Waldrop in the press box.

Up next is the press-room: Here you can see the seats for the reporters behind a giant glass pane with a perfect view of the field and you even can take a seat on the commentator’s chairs! Located right next to it is the Presidential Box: An incredibly lavish lounge with seats for 200 of the UA president’s closest friends. On the other side of the ranks, you can see another row of windows that contains the 159 Sky Boxes: Private lounges with up to 75 seats that can be rented – for the trifle of a $500,000 donation to get your name on the ten years long waiting list! You better hurry up to make your reservation!

In the maze of the inside of the stadium, the tour shows you The Zone, located right above the north end zone with a view on the Walk of Champions. Members can access that beautiful hall during games and it can also be rented for events, even for wedding receptions! Say I do and Roll Tide!

Then the tour finally enters the holy halls: The Crimson Tide’s locker room!

Touching the nose of Bear Bryant for good luck!

Touching the nose of Bear Bryant for good luck!

Standing in the huge room with the noble wooden lockers and leather stools, you can literally feel the Tide’s spirit!

Lockers of the players set up before the game

Lockers of the players set up before the game

Doing it like the players, you have to rub the nose of the Paul Bryant plaque and hit “WIN” above the doors before leaving the locker room for good luck! Then your way leads through the famous tunnel straight onto the field! You feel so incredibly small standing at that gateway, even without a hundred thousand fans cheering for you! And have you ever realized how gigantic the field goal is? You sure will do when you stand right underneath it!

Standing under the goal post at the end of the team's tunnel!

Standing under the goal post at the end of the team’s tunnel!

Walking around the field, you can take pictures that are memories for eternity. Side fact: It takes 120 hours of work and 500 cans of dye to paint the lines and signs on the field! Right across the Crimson Tide’s tunnel and locker, you can enter the one of the most iconic locations in the stadium: The Fail Room – which is nothing else than the locker room for the visiting teams. You can’t miss the obvious differences to the Tide’s locker room. But still, Alabama has one of the nicer, almost luxurious visitor locker rooms with stools and white walls – compared to Iowa, who for example painted theirs bright pink because of scientific proof that staring at it induced bad headaches.

And with that fun fact, the amazing tour comes to its end and leaves you feeling like a champion! Roll Tide!

8 ways Alabama football home games will change for fans in 2023

Alabama football will look a little different this year, and not just because of who’s under center.

Crimson Tide fans attending home games in 2023 can expect a few changes inside Bryant-Denny Stadium including field upgrades and locker room tours, designed by UA to enhance the gameday experience. But some of the changes will cost you extra.

Their official website rolltide.com shared the changes via Twitter and other social media Monday afternoon. Read about all of the changes there , but we highlighted nine from their announcement we think you should know about.

Bryant-Denny Stadium field upgrade

The field at Bryant-Denny Stadium was completely reconstructed, UA says, adding a new subair system with natural grass and synthetic turf aprons. The system includes vacuum-assisted drainage and heated air capabilities in addition to various sensors that will measure things like moisture and temperature they say will help the stadium’s grounds crew manage the surface.

Locker room tours / Souvenir tickets

Fans can now purchase behind-the-scenes locker room tours on Fridays before home games for $25 per person. Alabama ticketing went fully paperless during COVID in 2020, and now UA says fans can buy a souvenir printed game ticket ($15 each). They say you can inquire about both via the Crimson Tide Access program.

Champions Lane

An extension of Crimson Tide Sports Marketing’s pregame entertainment, “Champions Lane” will be located to the northwest of Bryant-Denny Stadium on the lawn behind the Tuska statue and will include food trucks, a sound stage, lounge with casual seating, LED videoboards for fans to watch other college football games in action, Crimson Tide student-athlete autograph tent and more.

Concession upgrades

The site says five of Bryant-Denny’s highest-volume concession stands were converted to grab and go markets where fans can grab items and proceed to check out faster. Automated self-checkout kiosks will be available at several concession stands throughout the stadium, allowing fans the ability to choose the method they prefer. The site also says multiple beverage and popcorn vending options have also been added “for ease and quickness.”

Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne also tweeted in August he would soon share price reductions on concession food and drink soon, but these are not listed in this update.

Alabama Football Fans in the Stands: Ole Miss 2021

Shaker bins

Fans will find shaker bins throughout the concourses of Bryant-Denny Stadium, allowing them to pick up a complimentary shaker upon entry to use for the game and return on the way out.

Honorary captain autograph sessions

For home games, honorary captains will sign autographs at the Bryant Museum starting five hours before kickoff. They will then move to The Authentic (Alabama’s player-merchandise store), located at Gate 34 on the south end of Bryant-Denny, for another autograph session 3.5 hours prior to kickoff, which will last an hour.

Perimeter enhancements

UA says the stadium’s security perimeter will be used as “an opportunity to enhance communication” with pertinent information such as general wayfinding, guest service center hotline, prohibited items and more.

Recognition and Celebration Schedule

Along with having a sponsor for each home game (listed on rolltide.com ), each week will also include a recognition and celebration of Alabama athletes and others in 2023. The schedule is listed below.

Alabama Aims for Latest Upgrades, Including to Bryant-Denny Stadium, to be a Giant Step Forward

  • Author: Christopher Walsh

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — It pretty much goes without saying that among those involved in any way with the University of Alabama athletic program, from the fans to the administrators and the athletes, everyone will have a favorite new thing stemming from the numerous changes made since the last football game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

That was last November 23rd when Alabama celebrated Senior Day with a 66-3 victory over Western Carolina. Construction crews subsequently got to work shortly the final whistle, while other projects were already under way.

Consequently, Alabama hosting Texas A&M (2:30 p.m. CBS) will be a landmark occasion in addition to being the rescheduled home opener of the 2020 college football season. It'll signal the conclusion of all the projects that had already begun when collegiate sports were shut down in March due to health and safety concerns, and the completion of the first phase of the massive Crimson Standard initiative.

“I’m very pleased,” Director of Athletics Greg Byrne said. “It’s worked out well to have a couple of extra weeks, to put on the finishing touches.”

Fans will notice some of them at Bryant-Denny Stadium even before entering, as a tunnel was added to the end of the Walk of Champions. It leads into an upgraded home locker room.

“I like the locker room,” junior wide receiver Devonta Smith. “It’s really nice.”

Also on the exterior, a student plaza was added to the south side of the stadium, and is covered to help protect those coming and going from both the sun and rain. It’s almost directly opposite where the recruiting room was expanded and nearly doubled in size.

Inside, new club areas and the addition of premium seats and skyboxes led to the press box being moved to the east side of the stadium. Those changes also resulted in adding some more elevators plus a wider upper-level concourse on the west side.

More eye-opening to most fans are the larger video boards in the four corners of the stadium.

“There were areas that we needed to pay attention to,” Byrne said. “Just on the forefront our video boards were past their due date. They needed to be addressed, and I think they’ll be a great addition for all of our fans. We had opportunities to have improvements in some areas in the concession and restaurant areas, not the entire stadium, but parts of it. We’ve enhanced the experience of students to keep them engaged on game days. And it’s important that we continue to take steps and continue to evolve as our world evolves.

“There’s more that we want to do down the road, but this was a good first step for us.”

Meanwhile, the latest renovations to the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility were wrapped up over the summer, including a renovated and expanded football locker room, training room, equipment room and lobby.

Specifically, the locker room was enhanced to feature 135 larger and more private lockers. Each has all the bells and whistles one can imagine, including a personalized Zero Gravity chair, storage space with wireless charging for a tablet, phone and watch, and an elaborate drying system for everything from cleats to shoulder pads. The room even has an LED lighting system.

The equipment room features specialty storage compartments and new automated high-density storage systems that are nothing short of jaw-dropping. Think of the most elaborate folding compartment shelving cabinet you’ve ever seen and then multiply it by about a billion to handle everything from shoes and helmets to full pads.

The medical facilities and training room were overhauled as well.

“I really enjoy the training room,” junior wide receiver Jaylen Waddle said. “That’s where I spend a lot of my time when I am not on the field. I like the training room a lot.”

Last, but not least, there’s the new building addition. Two years after Alabama cut the ribbon on the new Athletics Dining Facility on the north side of the football complex, a state-of-the art Sports Science Center has been added to the southern side, attached to the strength and conditioning areas.

What Alabama aimed for was to improve anything and everything that impacts the training and health of its athletes. What it got was a facility unlike any other.

“From what we’ve done here at Mal Moore, with the improvements in our infrastructure for our student-athletes, both from a medical and just overall experience and first-class science center, it’s something that no one else in the country has,” Byrne said. “From our training room to our virtual-reality area, to our sleep chambers, to cryotherapy, and then also from a mental-health areas that we’ve devoted, the entire well-being of the student-athlete is at the forefront of what we’re doing here at the University of Alabama.”

Even though tweets and Zoom calls, prospects are taking note.

“They can see that there’s a commitment to the well-being of the student athlete,” said Byrne, “to allow them to develop themselves physically, emotionally, academically and not just athletically.”

As for what’s next, it’s hard to say.

The Crimson Standard was initially conceived as a 10-year vision to raise $600 million. In January, Alabama announced the capital initiative had already surpassed the halfway point in under two years.

“We’re continuing to raise money, but we’re also being very respectful of the realities that everyone’s facing.” Byrne said.

“We’ve been blown away by the generosity of our donors.”

Phase one covered other renovations, including at Rhoads Stadium, where the softball team was getting used to its latest upgrades before the 2020 season was suddenly suspended and cancelled in the spring.

The initial plans for phase two included overhauling Coleman Coliseum, with another round of Bryant-Denny Stadium upgrades to be at the core of phase three. Obviously, with there being so much uncertainly and turmoil in the world now is not the time to start those, but even with phase one things were continually tweaked and modified as they moved forward.

As such, the goals have remained the same: to ensure the longevity and long-term success of Alabama athletics.

If anything, everything that’s been completed is serving as a daily reminder that there’s still more on the way.

“I’d have to say my personal favorite so far is the sports science center,” Byrne said. “It’s something that all of our student-athletes will be able to use and it’s going to have a positive impact on their total development as a person.”
